GPS when phone turned off ? - General Topics

Hi all,
I've posted this in the Iolite/Cruise 09 section as well. I'm posting here so there's a better chance of answering my question.
I just got my Cruise 09 delivered last week, it replaced an Eten M600 which finally died a month ago !!
I'm really happy so far, it could do with one or two more hardware buttons , but it's not really a problem.
I've been trying out TomTom , and bought the Europe maps, it works perfectly so far.
I have a question I hope someone can answer for me - Is it possible to turn off the phone and still use the GPS ? When I turn the phone off and try to use TomTom, I have a message on screen "All connections are disabled (Flight mode) "
Is there a way around this ?
I will be driving abroad soon and don't want to leave my phone on all of the time.
Thanks

you can turn it off but you can prob toggle the screen so you save a bit of power
that way
thing is when suspented the phones disable the sd interface to save power
and thats where most people keep their maps

It's a design flaw of TomTom. Other GPS apps work in flight mode though. You can turn the phone off but leave the wifi and/or bluetooth on. Driving with the phone off seems like an unnecessary/bad idea. Any good reason for it?

Hi ,
Thanks for the replies.

The reason I wanted to operate Tomtom without the phone turned on is because when I go away on holidays I usually turn my phone off. After all , the whole idea is to get away from it all and try to relax, not be answering the phone all the time.
I'm planning on driving around Scotland, and will be using the GPS on my new Cruise.
I've just been experimenting with my phone. If I have wifi enabled and the gsm off, Tomtom says flight mode enabled.
If I have Bluetooth enabled but wifi and gsm off , Tomtom works !
I also just got an email response from HTC, as follows --

Dear valued HTC customer,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
You recently wrote us about an issue that you have encountered with your HTC Cruise 2
To clarify your issue, you stated that: Hard reset operation
There must be a bug into the software, if the flight mode is visible into the system this can be just a software problem, if the flight mode is inside the tomtom software this can be the distribution of tomtom , please try the hard reset.
HARD RESET OPERATION.
1.Start
2.Settings
3.System
4.Clear Storage (before performing please make sure that you run a backup using active sync)

It appears they think I should do a hard reset.
Would this not just reinstall tomtom with the same bug ?

Is this problem my firmware?

Hi,
I have a problem with my Qtek S110. I just cannot get it to use Bluetooth whilst the radio is off. Whenever I try to activate bluetooth whilst in flight mode it tells me to turn off flight mode first.
I can find no way of turning the radio off other than switching to flight mode.
When I hold the power button down the screen backlight turns off but the radio remains on - totally different to what my Qtek manual states.
My goal is to have Bluetooth working with my GPS receiver but have the radio turned off.
I've emailed Qtek and a rather terse reply states that my phone is not working properly and to return it to the supplier. I don't trust that information and if I did return it I'm just as likely to get a phone which does exactly the same thing.
So, my question is, could someone please tell me if it is definately my firmware that causes this problem? (please see my current firmware in my sig)
Thank you.
BT switches OFF in flight mode no matter what firmware you use! It's designed like that.

Ah, I realise both BT and the phone should turn off in flight mode but what I am trying to do is to just turn the Bluetooth on by itself. I can't find out how to do it and the manual gives me no clues.
Could you please tell me if it is possible to have the phone off but bluetooth on (obvioulsy with the device on and not off)? If so, how do I do that.
If not, Qtek already told me that it should be possible to have bluetooth on when the phone part is off.
Thanks
A software called phone alarm allows you to do that. Make sure you install the latest version. You will be able to switch off the radio and leave the BT on.
Qtek support are wrong. Using the default apps you cannot switch off Radio unless you put it in flight mode.

Hi,
I have just installed v1.27 of Phone Alarm again in the hope that I missed something the first time I tried it.
Do you have phone alarm software installed? Could you please tell me how I turn off the phone part because I can't figure out how and I just read the instructions. If you do could you please try to it and tell me what you did - would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Actually,
I seem to have just managed to do it.
Not quite sure exactly what I've done as it was initially still telling me that I needed to turn flight mode off.
But, I am now seeing a nice blue led with no green led and a cross through the GSM indicator!!!
Thanks for all the info kta!! This is very much appreciated as I can now keep my phone which I like alot and buy that GPS receiver!
Thanks again!
I was just about to answer you. You beat me to it

Can't turn on the bluetooth

hello,
unfortunately i cannot turn on the bluetooth from comm manager, it turns on and after 1 second is off again.
any solution for this problem?
thanks.
I have had this problem before and unfortunately am having it again. Only solution I have ever found for this is a hard reset and then reinstalling all your apps. If you try to restore from a backup from Sprite Backup, for instance, the problem remains. This would lead me to believe that it's a setting or a registry issue somewhere but I haven't been able to locate exactly what would be causing it and don't know enough about programming in WM to write something to figure it out.
Not a great answer but there it is.

Hi, I have a Uk version of the touch cruise and I have the same problem. I just did a hard reset but the problem remains. Turning bluetooth on is impossible. It just try's to turn it on and shuts it off immediately.
Maybe it has something to do with GPRS? I am always connected to the internet. I tried to disconnect but then bluetooth still doesn't work. Can anyone help? Thnx!
No one has a clue?
I had this prob with bluetooth and wifi following the use of wmwifirouter- after hard reset and no wmwifi all goes well...
On a French SFR rom
any other idea?
Same problem... beginning to wish I'd gone all Apple and bought an iPhone. Anyway.... To trun it on, I had to go to Comm Manager>Settings>Bluetooth>Mode>Turn on Bluetooth. That worked despite the Comm Manager still showing Bluetooth as "off".
It only connects 1/2 the time to my headset or handsfree in the car
Otherwise, the phone crashes only once a day! Great! Thanks!
ok, great to see more people having the same problem but i hope that someone has a sollution...
When I try to turn bluetooth on in the communications settings i get a message saying there is a hardware error! :S
Ohw btw, I'm not using any router programs or other and my WIFI works fine.
has anybody of you having this problem tried to change to another rom?
if yes? did this worked?
any news on this?
No news, I don't want to try for a different rom because i don't think it will change anything. It just seems like its a faulty device which is a real shame. I've already contacted the place where i bought it and see if i can get a new one.
I also have problems with my microphone during calls, photo camera does often not work and the touchpad reacts very slowly to my touches. Very annoying!!!!
Yup, am returning mine to HTC aswell. Not even sure I want it back. WiFi stopped working too, and then it stopped receiving text messages, and everyone said they couldn't hear me when I called them. Great
Some of you guys got a bad device, there are thousands out there working properly.
If some of you guys flashed a newer Radio, the one form the test-ROM, then this is your problem.
And some of you guys have a quite gay branded ROM (slow responsiveness of touchpad). The original HTC ROM on the FTP and even more so a cooked ROM would solve alot of your problems. But be aware, flashing without having a backup ready is going to void your warranty if you want to exchange it having a custom/non-original ROM on the device.
What's up Schaggo
I am experiencing the same problem these gentlemen are mentioning and my ROM is not gay or lesbian. It is the original one.
TC is my 7th HTC device and I can see the quality of the ROMs decreasing a lot on every new device. I feel like HTC needs a real competitor to move up its arse quicker.
All I can say is that it really annoys me to hard reset this [email protected] everytime I "accidentally" use a native feature called Flight Mode. By bluetooth seems to fly away and never get back.
Lots of time the GPRS settings have to be reconfigured too. Some people I know have problems with GMail IMAP4 accounts when sending messages after some time. I never had this problem on my Kaiser neither on my Niki.
The lack of a video driver really is an egg on our faces, because I can't believe my ole Qtek 9100 responds quicker than these "all the bells and whistles" Qualcomm 7200 super-duper geared up devices.
So, if you feel like not contributing, please do not mess around.
Your signature tells me you are a wise man, but your comments show me otherway.

Hi
I've tried many custom rom and the PB continue. "PB with the hardware oh BT".
Hard reset doent change anything.
my initial rom (SFR France) was working
custom rom (blackwidow + Bepe 058) are buging...
nedd some help !
Thanks alot for that input feaps. I guess I have to clarify a little bit.
My answer was supposed to be pointing in different directions. The first and general information I tried to contribute was, that it is not a common Polaris problem to have a broken Bluetooth unit. Which doesn't help at all to ppl affected, but it should tell them, that they probably got a bad device and should exchange it first before blameing htc in general and shouting for an iPhone.
It only was partially directed at specific persons. At madinga for example: did you try hardresetting your device? It could be a corruption in your system which causes all those problems. I doubt it though, if you suffer the loss of so many functions at the same time I suspect the mainboard to be broken. But nonetheless, hardreset it, see if its working, BEFORE you put your backup back on the device again since that could restore the corruption. If it doesnt work, exchange your unit, I hope you'll get a working one back.
My second line was directed at all people which have overwritten their original Radio with the 1.58.25.14 originating from the HTC Test ROM which can be found on the ftp server. The Bluetooth part of that Radio is flawed and leads to the problems described in this thread. I quite nicely pointed that out and told people where to have a look before shouting around. I do know that because I tried it myself and couldnt get my Bluetooth devices working. Once I flashed the original Radio back, my BT problems were gone.
And my third line - in which I may chose the wrong words, 'gay' for example - holds information targeted at people with for example the branded french SFR ROM or the original HTC french ROM. The SFR ROM is just horribly branded and if you go through the threads here you'll find people complaining about problems which then turn out to be related to the ROM. The french HTC ROM is flawed as well, it has severe problems with the volume control. I don't exactly remember what it was, but it's a flawed ROM, thats for sure. The German o2 ROM isnt flawless either, I know that because I originally had that ROM. Once I flashed my orbit 2 with the original HTC WWE ROM, I found it to be working alot better and smoother than with the o2 ROM originally provided. And this is where my last line comes into play: if you suffer problems related to your currently flashed ROM, they could be diminished by flashing an alternative ROM. But if your device is broken, and I personally and strongly believe that everybody fooling around in this forum should be intelligent enough and able to determine the sense of my words, eg. if he/she suffers a ROM problem or if the device just simply is dead and take appropriate actions.
And now to your contribution feaps. I feel personally attacked by your words. Thats why I defended my words in all the paragraphs above. Trust me, I've had enough mobile devices of all sorts to know what it means to get a not working once. Its frustrating and makes you want to throw it out of the window. And being able to see the quality decrease over time is just another drop on a hot stone. I agree. But be honest, if your BT unit works and stopps working once you engage a software based function, the problem is software related, dont you think? As for the GPRS settings, I cant tell. Since I use a free ROM which has the wizard built in (o2 removed it from their ROM) I didnt switch my SIM and the configuration worked, automatically and every single time. And I do use IMAP as well on my personal E-Mail account. Until now I didnt run across any problems, so I cant give you any feedback on that either.
So rethink again if I mess around or not or if I actually try to contribute and help the freshmen, coming into this forum and flashing whatever they find and breaking their devices. And recommending to flash the original HTC ROM, which should be/is the base for everything floating around, breaking your devices, is a serious input to everybody.
Edit: I forgot to add, pointed at nooms, there are cooked ROMs out there which stupidly have the new, flawed Radio baked in. Which Radio are you on? Try Start > Settings > Tab System > Device Information > Tab Version. Are you inadvertedly still on Radio 1.58.25.14 or back to (original) 1.58.21.23?
Hi everyone,
I agree with Schaggo completely. Most of the time problems have something to do with the software on the device. But I a not a tweaker like most of you guys, i've just bought my first (and hopefully not last) HTC phone. If i have problems of some kind, all i can do is reset the thing. A hard reset if necessary. I've done that many times. I can't change the software that comes standard and i don't think i should be the one who has to do that. Shouldnt HTC be doing that??
Anyway, Bluetooth keeps saying it has an hardware error. My radio version is a standard 1.58.21.23 but isnt finding any radiostations here in holland. Is it also broken? (sorry, i know, its a bit off topic)
You're right

Well put. Sorry for being rude, but I keep seeing people offending others day after day in this forum that used to be high level; but that doesn't mean I should act the same way.
I totally misread you and please accept my apologies.
My ROM is: 1.25.405.1 WWE
ROM Date: 12/11/07
Radio Version: 1.58.21.23
Protocol Version: 25.65.30.04H
One thing I could notice is that HTC has a flaw in the Flush HKCU to Permanent Memory While Shutting Down. Some keys are not written.
One example is the MagiCall (an app I use) registration key. The software maker had to write a flush app for doing that. Another example is the Start>Settings>System>Error reporting. No matter what you chose, after a power cycle or a soft reset, it always go back to "Disable...".
I have, also, already tested the device after the hard reset with no extra apps on it. Same lame behavior on BT...
So, SW QA levels are really dropping fast on new HTC models. That is pretty bad.
But anyway, I have an open case with HTC and if I find something contributive I will toch base with this thread.
Once again, sorry for being rude.
Best,
-Feaps

Then I guess you most probably got a bad unit. I guess the only solution at this time is an exchange.
The Radio-Firmware doesnt control the FM Radio btw The Radio-Firmware controls connections to the providers network, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth. But the FM Radio seems to be really bad in the Polaris, a lot of ppl I know complain about it.

No problem dude! There is no need for such an excessive appology. We are in a Forum and people have different oppinions and I think its totally acceptable to shout at each other. I just wanted to express that I'm not in accord regarding your judgement of my post. But thanks a lot, I seriously really appreciate it!
Yes, your device seems pretty standard to me and the scenario you described logically made me think of a software error. But this seems very unlikely now. I'm out of ideas for the moment then, I guess you have to return or exchange it too.
You are perfectly right about the dropping SW QA though. You can notice the registry glitch in other areas as well: backlight timer always reset to 30 sec, and there are more settings all over the place which don't get saved properly.
Again, no problem, everybody lets be cool
Bluetooth doesn't turn on
I have the same problem. Did anyone find a solution?
Also camera fails to initialize, touch pad is sometimes very slow for initial reaction. I have NO added programs beyond manafacturer originals and have tried a number of hard resets. Doesn't help.

Problems with TomTom Navigator 6 on Polaris

I have had several problems with TomTom Navigator 6 (installed from HTC Touch Cruise CD). Using USA/Canada complete map purchased from TomTom.
History
1. The "Turn on sound" setting in Change Preferences does not stay set to on. Every time I start TomTom, the sound is turned off.
2. After a destination has been selected, the voice directions are incomplete. TomTom will say "After 100 yards..." rather than "After 100 yards, turn right". TomTom NEVER indicates what direction to turn in advance of the turn. It will tell you which direction to turn when you are at the point of turning, but never in advance.
3. I have a problem when selecting a contact as the destination. Click "Navigate to..." then "Contact", then scroll through my contacts and make a selection. In the vast majority of cases, Navigate to returns the address with the street number AFTER the street name rather than before it.
Thus TomTom returns:
Main Steet 134, Bryn Mawr
The address given for this contact can't be understood. Would you like to enter the address yourself?
All of my contacts are synced from Outlook/Exchange and are all set up correctly. This bug renders the Navigate to Contact fetaure useless.
First follow-Up
I finally got around to call TomTom regarding these problems and I am not happy with their response!
According to TomTom, the HTC Touch Cruise is not on their supported list. That's correct folks, not supported. Doesn't matter that it comes packaged with the TC, it's not supported. Blame HTC (they say) for including the license with an unsupported device.
The technician suggested that I downgrade to Navigator 6 V6.030 which supposedly addresses my issues. I did the downgrade and determined that:
1. The sound setting still is not maintained. In fact, it now required that I press Turn on Sound twice for this feature to work.
2. I am still not getting the complete voice response, only "After 1/8 mile..." No turn left or turn right. TomTom said I should reformat my memory card and reinstall app and maps and that MIGHT help. Well, I'm, not going to go through all of that unless I know it will work, too many other things on the memory card to deal with.
3. Navigate to.. Contacts now actually seems to work! But the ironic thing is that TomTom told me that the Navigate to... Contacts feature is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED even though it is in their software! They claim it was never completed and therefore not supported.
This is absurd. The hardware is not supported by the software that it was bundled with, and the software itself has features that are not even supported by the developer.
Second follow-Up
I uninstalled and reinstalled TomTom 6.032 from the CD. Also uninstalled and reinstalled the maps.
1. Default sound setting seems to have been fixed.
2. Still have the problem with incomplete audio directions ("In 1/8 mile...)
3. Navigate to Contacts also seems to be working though not tested extensively.
Am I the only user with this TomTom oddity? Why on earth will it not state the entire direction? TomTom has been no help, anyone here have any ideas?
I cannot say this for the US/Canada maps but for the Benelux/Western Europe maps, the directions are OK and I don't encounter your problem.
I'm using the default Dutch voice in version 6.032.
Try a hard reset and install tomtom again on the clean rom, see what happens with that.
German maps work fine, too. I'm using Lisa (as a speaker , who is more or less Tom Tom default I believe.
Sound settings are kept correctly.
Version 6.032
I don't have any problems with TomTom either.
IF you want to try some other voices, you could drop me a PM and we'll "arrange" so you can get them from me (got a package of many different voices)

I was preparing to hard reset my TC (last resort) when I figured that there was nothing to lose by changing the voice. I did, and it worked! Never would occur to me that the voice selection would have any impact on this problem.
But, unfortunately, the problem with keeoing the default sound setting has returned. Each time I start TomTom, the sound is off. ARGH!
Anyway, thank you for steering me in the right direction. Hopefully this one issue is now put to bed.
Nice to be able to help
maybe you could be so kind reading my thread and answer it? (since it seems i'm the only one in this forum that actually owns a TC *cough cough*)

I get exactly the same problem with the sound. I have an XDA Orbit II, sound in TomTom always off, have to keep changing it, removed it, I use Co-Pilot and Navigon now, both are great.
RE: Sound problem
I have the same problem with the sound and it was bugging the hell out of me too. Speaking to a friend of mine who has the same problem, apparently it is due to a known bug in the current TomTom release: If you have a data connection open when you start TomTom, it thinks you are in the middle of a voice call and mutes the sound. My friend also informed me that there should be a new release from TomTom soon that addresses the issue. I don't have any links but there may well be another thread somewhere on this forum about it if you search.
The sound on my TomTom will occassionally turns itself off and requires it to be turned on TWICE to work again. I think its a known bug. The problem used to be worse on my P3600/Trinity.
Update- from the kaiser forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330235
It's a bug, you have to switch off the data connection before starting TomTom.
SIMPLE FIX: Roll the volume wheel and sound turns on.

Sure? Rumour has it on GPS-specific forums that TomTom are not actively working on updating Nav6 (for PDAs) because its too much like hard work; much more revenue in (simpiler) dedicated units which are more stable

Interesting. Prior to launching TomTom, I used Comm Manager to turn off the data connection. When TT launched, sound is indeed on! When sound is off as a result of an active data connection), using the volume slider on the TC does not turn the sound on. Seems like the only way it to go to settings and select Sound On twice.
Hopefully TomTom will correct this bug. May also try downgrading to 6.030 to see if that works but I don't know what features I'd be losing (if any).

Skype Kills Hardware Keyboard

This happens always when I initiate a chat in skype... The keyboard just wont respond until reboot. Anyone knows the issue?
Are you connected over wifi? I have issue if my wifi power mode is set to best performance/least battery. For some reason it locks up my hardware keyboard.
... This seems to be the worst kind of issue because its kind of untraceable. Mostly it appears but sometimes doesn't. It can also happen after fresh reboot... it happens on wifi or data... it is occasional but mostly it is there. I'm desperate... one of the main reasons to buy a WM device was to stay mobile online in msn & skype
im facing same issues, with Wifi enabled.
Keyboard becomes totally unusable/unresponsive, have tried everything found in these forums with no luck. adjusting power/performance/best battery don't solve the issue for me.
this is taking me at the point to sell my Fuze that i was so happy with until this problems.
DP: anyway selling it with these issue would be consider as a hustling, so i can't iven sell it.
Lets keep this thread active
Well lets make some noise here... there must be a clever member/moderator who has a clue about this issue.
Anyone....
I've also expereicenced this with active wifi

hard to explain issue with my touch pro

i am having battery drain issues on my sprint touch pro. i believe it stems from the phone waking itself up when it goes into roam mode. i live in a rural area of west TN so as you can imagine this happens quite a bit. i have been through many, many threads on here via the search function and so far haven't found anything that can help me.
i thought maybe the s2u2 program would be the answer, but after reading a bit, it seems like maybe i will have the same issue.
i've also looked into every menu i can find (on the advanced config program even) and so far nothing has worked. i've had the phone since january now and i really like it, but this involuntary waking/battery thing is really killing me.
anyone on here know a fix for this other than disabling roaming? i do like to make and/or receive calls ocassionally.

Turn off 3 G or HSPDA and see if that helps.
i dont know how turning off 3g works with sprint (Cdma) but i could recommend using some sort of auto locking program (start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547367). that way it would keep your phone locked and not completely active when it "wakes up". another option would be to use a program that shuts off your screen when it's in your pocket (http://www.fuzemobility.com/phone-upside-down-backlight-off/). other than that, i dont have much for you.
does anyone know of any reg keys to change that will disable the auto-wake on teh roaming?
I had this - but it didn't seem to be related to roaming.
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504016
I'm now on my third Touch Pro.
The first had the above problem which o2 (UK) repair denied was a problem.
The second didn't have the above problem, but did have a faulty speaker.
I'm now two weeks into my third Touch Pro whch so far does not have this problem.
I hard reset and reinstalled software one app at a time and concluded it wasn't a software issue.
After swapping handset's and not seeing the issue, despite having the same software and ROM loaded (stock o2, but the latest handset is a later stock ROM) I've conclude it definitely was a hardware issue.
Can you get a replacement under your warranty?
