New Upcoming i-Mate Phone has 2GB Nand RAM - General Topics

http://www.imate.com/810-F/
It's the worlds first water proof Windows Mobile Business phone.
Click on i-Mate's website's Facts and Figures and it says 2GB NAND RAM / 128 MB RAM / 256 MB ROM
It's also got an armored shell: it can withstand being run over by vehicles.
Temperature endurance: blazing hot / freezing cold
Pressure proof: will not implode/explode due to atmospheric pressure
I think this is the phone that super man has been looking for!
Other specs can be found at phonearena and gsmarena.
There is absolutely no connections or holes. It seems like you have to charge it on a cradle (somewhat similar to Palm pre, but it is necessary I think)
The phone has a 624 MHz processor, and I am not sure if you can expand the storage memory.
What do you guys think? What do you guys know? Why in the world does it have 2GB NAND Ram anyway?

Please, can someone explain to me the purpose of a 2GB RAM?

It's a business only phone... why the heck 2 GB RAM for windows mobile anyway?

RAM can't be NAND. i-mate must be referring to onboard flash (like in HTC Diamond or iPhone).

But it says RAM?

NAND RAM is used for storage, and is cheaper than conventional ram.

This is how good their marketing team is This is clearly a typo/mistake.
Check out https://www.imate.com/support/Specs/SpecSheet_810-F.pdf.
It still says NAND RAM, which is BS, but it's called internal storage there.

How come my transformer onlyy show less than 400m memory available in the task killer?. I removed all the Widgets and haven't install any extra apps besides angry bird games. The available memory still showing less than 500M. Hows your transformer available memory show?
With 512 MB RAM you get 100-250 MB of free RAM, so >400MB is more than enough for everything !

It is.. but the graphics and the OS take up a chunk of it don't forget.
I've seen this question pop up on ever forum for every 1GB device I've looked at so far. There's 1GB of RAM minus what the GPU uses minus what the OS uses. Should be an automatic sticky.

[Q] Possible to unlock the extra 3Gb of storage RAM?

The EVO 3D is basically the same phone as the Sensation with the addition of 3 extra Gb of RAM. The spec sheet for the Sensation on HTCs site lists 4Gb of RAM with a note that only 1Gb is user accessible.

I remember when T-Mobile's version of the HD2 came out and it had 768 Mb of RAM vs the 512 in the European HD2s and there was a way to unlock the remainder of the RAM with a hack for the Euro models.
I'm sure given HTCs track record that they've used the same hardware (makes sense) to cut down on costs so it's just a matter of a hack from the community to unlock the remaining 3Gb of RAM.
What say ye?

I guess you mean ROM and not RAM...and I've read that it is not possible...
Sure just buy a couple of DDR3 sticks and jam 'em in the microSD slot.

No, said RAM, meant RAM....
You can do the research, I was going by memory but it actually had 1Gb of RAM vs the 448 in standard HD2s. The Euro HD2s had an unlock that at least gave them 576 Mb, I'm guessing the same will be true here.

As you said in your first post, the Sensation is listed with 768 MB RAM, 4 GB Internal Storage (1 GB user addressable). Some of the 768 is then used for Android and Sense, with the remainder being open to run other applications. The 4 GB with 1 GB user addressable is NOT RAM. RAM is volatile (non-permanent) memory that is VERY fast and used to store the data for a currently running process. The user addressable space is non-volatile and is used for permanent storage of applications, contacts, photos, etc. It is not possible to use this as RAM as it is flash memory instead of using capacitors like the RAM found in cell phones (which provides the speed needed).
Some of the remaining 3 GB might be open in the future after the bootloader is unlocked and custom ROMs are flashed as they would be less memory intrusive than Sense. This might also free up some extra RAM from system use, but there is no possible way to increase it beyond 768 - whatever vanilla android requires to run.

May the sensation have 1Gb "hidden" of ram?

Ok first of all, i'm OK with the 764MB of ram, actually.
But it's good to know if there is any posibility, of having a 1GB of ram, because there is a lot of phones, with a hiden ram.
Xperia X10 is suposed to have 256, but really have 320, HTC HD2 442mb, 512 real, and other phones with "hidden ram" so, maybe our sensations have 1GB but it's hidden, or unabled!!!
What do you think? there is any way to know that?
thanks
Yes it is possible, like with rom, officialy it is 1GB, but it is 4GB ! 3GB is hidden for system, updates, etc. With s-off and root we could change this. Also in case of ram: 768 is not popular, ram chips are 0,25, 0,5; 1, 2 usual, I dont understand why htc rask manager shows 556 MB (100-180 free), but android running apps shows different number (280-300 MB free)... someone would need to disassemble sensation and look on chips numeration....

While chip is definitely 4gb, it has been formatted to reduce capacity but increase speed. No, you will not get 4gb out of it no matter what you do, once it's formatted that way - there's no way back. There are no "hidden" partitions, nothing is reserved for future updates or any other BS like that.
Ram memory is definitely 768MB. While it's not the most popular size, it has been used before (MyTouch 4G, Incredible S, Desire HD to name few). You will not see all of it in any task manager because 100+ MB is reserved for stuff below OS level (radio, gpu, etc) which is absolutely ridiculous but that's the way HTC does things.
If anyone is wondering, Android's running apps is most likely showing the correct number of free memory.

Opinions On 1gb Ram Performance in Android?

So how yall liking 1gb of ram on your android devices? I wanna hear some opinions from you guys plus this is an interesting topic lol. I own an Acer Iconia A100. It has 1gb of Ram but 512mb is what's recognized in the OS. I personally think 1gb is fine for a tablet but I would love more lol as sometimes my background tasks get killed for no reason. And btw 512mb of ram is just horrible on android (I own a galaxy s n man ram is such a down side on that phone). So tell me ur opinions
P.S this thread is intended for people who have devices with 1gb ram. But your more than welcomed to post opinions if your device has less or more ram
Love it. Not really to much more to say.
Device - Razr.
On phones it's more than enough but tablets should have 2gb.

I own an Iconia A100 and it does in fact have 1GB of RAM, 512MB of it is used for the tegra graphics. My Nexus S has 512MB of RAM and it runs I've Cream Sandwich perfectly.
More RAM is always nice but thanks to Android being based on the great Linux, RAM goes further than you'd think.

Well as long as your processor is fast enough.
I think the trick is to make a lighter and less demanding OS and not to play catch up with the ram and CPU speeds. Eventually a phone will be 10core, 10 gig ram etc lol I definitely don't think that is the way to go
Agreed, its comparable to the O.S. and what is running. You could have 2 gigs but have a hog of an O.S. and it will seem sluggish.

True lol but the real problem here is that the ram is shared all the time which means you have less accesable ram. For example my tablet has 1gb of ram but only 512mb is recognized cuz the rest is reserved for the gpu.

Why does it say I only have 1794 mb of RaM?

When I go to Antutu or Ram Booster they say I only have 1794 mb of ram what happen to the other 250 mb?

It is like that for absolutely everything. PCs/Notebooks, Tablets, Phones, etc. It's normal.
Just remember one thing that with a build.prop edit (by adding a line) you can fake the available RAM in Settings/About phone (like you can show some CPU info), but I don't know if some apps detect it (I think but... not sure ).
Maybe something like "ro.product.************" .
Maybe a Google search will give you the trick, just a cosmetic thing since the real available RAM is "hardcoded"

Yes, but those are dedicated "add-on" cards and are generally limited to PCs and gaming notebooks. The OS would still be using the main system memory. If you had 16GB RAM, the OS and any other processes would be using it regardless. You would never have 16GB available to you. Also, even if you had dedicated memory on the graphics card some of it will also be used regardless without your knowledge.
Any SoC uses the systems main memory.
If you want the full 2GB available to you, have fun never turning on your phone. If you want 2GB only for you, then the system has nothing to run on.
Memory is there to be used. Having a separate section for the OS and 2GB only for your choosing is pointless and inefficient.

I don't have a problem (well I do but not as much) with the OS and GPU use the 2GB of ram I have available but it should be something like like 300mb out of 2048mb (300/2048) of available ram not just cut my 2Gb of ram to 1794. What if the OS only needs 200 I still would not have 1894mb my max available ram is always 1794.

its not out of 2048MB for one
its 2GiB, not 2GB
from wikipedia
Although most manufacturers of hard disk drives and flash-memory disk devicesdefine 1 gigabyte as 1000000000bytes, software like Microsoft Windows reports size in gigabytes by dividing the total capacity in bytes by 1073741824 (230 = 1 gibibyte), while still reporting the result with the symbol "GB". This practice causes confusion, as a hard disk with an advertised capacity of, for example, "400 GB" (meaning 400000000000bytes) might be reported by the operating system as only "372 GB" (meaning 372 GiB). Other software, like Mac OS X 10.6[5] and some components of the Linux kernel[6] measure using the decimal units. The JEDEC memory standards uses the IEEE 100 nomenclatures which defines a gigabyte as 1073741824bytes (or 230 bytes).

2 GiB is 1024x1024x1024. HDD / MMC / SSD use GB (1000x1000x1000) not GiB, however this is for storage. RAM is usually binary 1024... so it most likely is out of 2048.

I will just try to ignore this and I will be happier I guess, my cpu-z still says 1794MB total ram.
The device has 2GB of RAM but you the "BIOS" or whatever controller is in there allocates some for itself and the hardware in the phone (mainly GPU) and the rest is left to the OS.
Sharing RAM is good in general but many systems require X amount of RAM whether it's actively being used or not as it's designed to be able to use it. if it were to call on that memory address and it's full the system would crash (or a STOP error).
So instead of sharing it and allocating it as needed, it's locked off totally from the OS in the event it's ever needed by the hardware.
