I wanna front camera! - Touch Pro, Fuze General

From what I understand - the socket to hold the front camera is indeed on our beloved HTC Fuze units.
My question is this:
1. Can we order the part from HTC?
2. It looks like it would be easy enough to install (just cut a hole where it should be) - but what about device drivers and such?
I see that there IS indeed someone out here that has a unit with a front camera - perpahs we can get the drivers off his unit or extract them from a ROM that uses this?
Thoughts....suggestions...???
Thanks!

Not worth it if you ask me..... finding the part is going to be a btch....
better off simply buying an unlocked Touch Pro and enjoying a nicer keyboard layout while you're at it

hmmm...well interesting thoughts. My only issue with that is a) I'm on ATT so a touch pro isn't going to help me out and b) I thought the sprint version of this unit didn't have the front camera either???
I haven't had the guts to actually take my fuze apart yet - I wonder if that camera is acutally there and just simply covered up by the case. My guess is that it's not so they could save the 20 cents on the part..haha.
Tell ya what though - I'm getting sick and tired of these USA carriers ripping us off. The sprint one doesnt have the FM radio - none appear to have the front camera - the verizon didn't have the gps until recently...like WTF they keep selling us these bull**** crippled devices for? Blow 100's of bucks on these units and then the damn carrier turns off or removes all the cool stuff in em? geeeze! Its enough for me to sit down and write a letter to my senator and complain about these unfair practices....
Edit: Ok I just sent an email to HTC asking for the part number and if they would sell me the part - so we'll see.
Also - can anyone clear this up - which versions of the phone actually DO have the front camera? I've seen some websites that compare specs but they seem inaccurate as the website also said the sprint one had an FM radio ability and the fuze did not....

no american phone will have a front camera. they restrict whatever they can to save money. most notably the amount of stuff on the iphone limited to wifi only because att says so. att does do video share but since it takes it from the wrong camera, they hope people will buy the service and never use it. if they put on a front facing camera people would be doing anything they could to use it for free on their network. they would have to pay extra for the bandwidth used by their customers and get nothing back. that doesnt sound very american. the unlocked touch pro doesnt work on american gsm 3g so it would be useless to try to do video with it. and cutting apart your fuze will probably do alot of damage to your touch screen. you will break it, dont try.

"... that doesnt sound very american...."
No it does not. But guess what! I'm willing to trash 3 or 4 units to get it to work..and belive me I will. I have the part # now and have 6 front cameras on the way. ($56US) and they will be here next wednesday.

lol I must say that this man is a true american ... I in no way condone what you are doing though.

actually i am surprised they dont have mini usb camera's that we can just plug in to the phone yet. That should be cheaper and less work

Explain me please....
Can anybody explain which are the models that allows video calls. I leave in Argentina, bought my touch Pro in Paraguay and as long as I can see this one does have the front camera. When I try ta make a video call a Warning say to me:
"The 3G network is not available. Do you want to make a voice call instead."
A this time I have a beautiful "G" icon showing at the top off the screen and the Wap conexion icon also Showing the "G" letter and full five bars strong signal meter. Thank you.

It may have been an idea to also purchase a new TOUCH pro flex cable for the screen aswell?
I haven't personally opened a TP up but my understanding is the front camera fits onto the same mebrane which connects to the front speaker/light sensor and the screen and as such, it is likely the Fuze may not have the socket soldered on for the camera?
good luck!

not to sound rude, but the ones that allow video calls witht he front camera are the ones that has the front camera. Just take a look at the actual product, if there is indeed a camera on the top right of the screen (where the ATT logo would've been), then you should be able to do video calls (again, considering that the network you're in has the capabilities.) Good luck

if you get it in, good for you. i wonder how much support there will be though. if the device hasnt removed the ability to use that from a bios-ish point. but if you get it in and it doesnt work, you can pretend you have a non american touch pro by looks alone.
i wonder how much a mirror costs...

Over 9000! pennies.....

I still prefer my 8125. Removing the audio jack seems kind of stupid. Adding the wheel is kinda nice. Doesn't look any smaller or sleeker to me. How much more than the 8125 do you guys think they are going to charge for this?
if this thing is faster not clocked than the 8125 i already bought it.
Interesting.. Looks like it's going to support Cingular's Push To Talk..
when is it coming??
i'd definately buy this HTC HERMES!!!!
U know it's not only
"Audio jack eliminated and replaced by mini USB
No front camera
leftside wheel"
It's 3G! 2mpix! 400mhz!!
Is this real? The "PTT" button looks poorly photoshopped...
Yes PTT is real and it works. Not as fast as Nextel
eeter, thank you for keeping us up-to-date. The new device looks very nice.
actually, the initial ptt connection takes 7 seconds. Once the channel is open, the latency is much less than nextel. PTT calls can then be converted to a dynamic call, etc. And you can see who's available, before getting the notorious *dong* "user unavailable"
i'm looking forward to this device for sure.
I'm amazed that Cingular would want to take this phone to market without video calling. It would seem to me that it would be the next big thing for selling more services...
Very glad I pulled the trigger and bought a TyTN!!!!
video calling requires perfect UMTS/HS continuous coverage. Networks are relying on GSM to fill UMTS voice holes but they cannot Handover to EDGE for video calling. Hopefully in the future. It will cost xxx billions to get UMTS and HS everywhere. Do not forget the T1/E1's backhaul
ummmm
You all should know that this photo is shopped up... look where the camera should be (right hand side right above the screen)... you can see where someone tried to use the "clone" function in photoshop to cover it up.. also.. the PTT button where the "voice memo/voice dial" button is might be photoshopped as well.. had me fooled! but i'm still hopefull!!!
You might be right. HTC provided these pict to Cingular before the PDA production maybe. The actual phone is with no camera (hermes100) and the PTT button doesnot have the word PTT on it
Missing Camera?
Well despite the photoshop work over the missing camera. 3g has yet to roll out i have heard "Hopefully in the next month" her in the st. louis region. The video conference relies only on the utms/hsdpa data channel. So I may purchase it anyways...Like my SX66 it came without a camera and now it has one. These phones do come apart, they do use the same mainboards, so later on one could purchase a dead unit froma repair shop online or surplus inventory, and scalp the camera from a hermes200. Its not difficult.
then i'll mail you mine so you can mod it as well (with a modest Labor fee of ... say $25 plus parts? *wide grin*)
I gotta call bull ****....
That pic is totaly photoshopped. The part with the keyboard showing doesnt even have the screen in landscape mode, let alone the front cam being
"cloned" out like an earlier post said.
Why wouldnt C just leave it be and disable the cam with the firmware, and update it when the network can handle it.
I for one, am pissed about this, and will probably buy a TyTN now because of it, but I will wait till the official launch before deciding...
there is no frontside camera in the 8525. it is not bs. ptt won't be available on the unit until early '07 via rom flash....the button however will be ready for it.
mid month, mid month.
the pic may be a bad photoshop job... however that is the expected 8525.. no front cam, etc.. im not sure about the missing audio jack though
Any further news on a release date? I've heard Monday or Tuesday this week is a possibility and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks in advance...
pushed slightly because a last minute bug and a new ROM release (1.31)

cameraless Version

does anyone know if there is / will be a cameraless version of the Touch Pro? Or any of the newer phones that is... Treo Pro, Omnia, Diamond, etc... I'm still stuck at Hermes level by Cingular. Does AT&T still make versions without cameras?
Why do you want a camera less version? Why not just get the normal one and not use the camera?
Because he works in a place (or goes to a school) where camera's are prohibited, due to there being sensitive documents (or children) about.
Maybe it helps, when you put a piece of sticky tape on the camera chip under the cover disable camera icon in album, turn off touchflo and delete camera shortcut from programs,so all access to camera app will be disabled. If someone will ask,if you are able to take pictures with it,just give him for a test to take the picture. Or make a small triangle from black plastics and stick it on the alluminium one. Yes,but what with the 3G camera?
Thats correct. A place where cars are around that noone has seen yet. A camera would cost me my job, not even a cameraphone with deactivated camera is allowed. So the AT&T (or until now Cingular) phones where great, because I could show them, they are *manufactured* without camera (though I know the modul is just pulled inside and a black cover where the lens was). Of course it's a real pita to find those on ebay, and from someone that ships to germany too
Mercedes, BMW or Audi I wonder
@TomasNM: in case they ask, I have to prove that the phone was manufactured without camera, i.e. you can order or buy it somewhere. Of course I can fake the camera be gone, but when I have a HTC something for example, I need to be able to show that there is one without camera (like nokia E51 for example).
@NLS: Audi.
there's quite a demand for phones without camera, but it's more or less ignored by companys. Only one so far besides Nokia I know is Cingular, and that was only because they couldn't get their video network to work
Yes,I was in april at BMW in Germany for a bussinesstrip. Everywhere is taking photos strictly disallowed, but I needed some to take(of ours machine for documentation),so I just did it with Olympus camera, not only with HTC Hurricane(my bussiness phone). Everybody thought,I am crazy, but I didn't care. Hahaha. Sorry La....ut. Anyway, our machines are for the welding of already-known parts of BMWs and my pictures was without those parts,so no secret things goes out(if someone wants to ask).
BMW is quite easy on cameras, and in Audi manufacturing part noone cares also (everyone I know that works there has a cameraphone). Though I work in the technical development area, and it's quite different there... There are several cases of termination of work contract...
Considering how difficult it is to get a phone now that doesnt have a camera. Cant you just explain the situation with your boss?

Pictures, or it didn't happen!
LOL, J/K
What about physically removing the camera and making a little cover to cover the hole. Ive heard of people doing that. Ive also heard there are companies that will do it for you if you don't have the skills. When I worked at 3M it was worse,we simply were not allowed to have phones of any kind in the plant at all. At our plant,we had could have them in the offices,up front but not in the actual manufacturing facility.
If I did that with say,my mogul,I think I would get one of the 3rd party extended batteries with the cover that doesnt have the markings that indicate there is a camera. That way,I would have a phone, with no camera, and a little plastic or rubber plug over a hole, where there is no camera. (rubber plug might be better, that way if someone really thought there was a camera, you could pull out the plug and show them, nothing there. )
There will be a cameraless version, why is everyone douvting it? The 8125, 8525, and Tilt all have had cameraless counterparts.
I'm not doubting, I have asked the bad thing about it, is you have to wait ~2 generations of phones until they pop up on ebay....
(and explaining such a situation to the boss of 30.000 ppl that you maybe saw once on TV is a bit difficult)

There are some Qteks around, with pushmail and everything, but only for upper management. They just have a sticker on the camera, but they are registered with numbers. Also there's a department that has camera phones in an isolated area, those are the ppl that work on bluetooth in the car etc., but again everything registered. Since I'm external, i.e. working for a company that works for that company, there's no way to get in a situation to be *allowed* to have a secured camera phone.
I the case of the Touch Pro there are 2 cameras that need to be removed / disabled, making it even more difficult to do oneself to the satisfaction required.
Ill send you my Nokia 2110.... and in return I get a pic of the RS8?

I held the Fuze today!!!! share your Fuze story

so today was a good day. for one i was blessed to wake up this morning and to top it of i held a ATT FUZE in my hand. it was the best 10 plus minutes in my life while i was wearing clothes lol. yes people i was at the store today in Milford, CT. the sales associate there had a test model. and i must say it is everything you would have guessed it would be. first off both the stores i went to in the Milford, CT area said the phone will be available the first week in november. so the oct. 23 date is a farse. the guy at the store named weel call "joe the plumber" (cause he is so famous these days) said he had his training on this past tuesday. and most likely the phone will be in his words. "the same price as the tilt when it came out or price competativaly with the iphone. with the rebate if u get the data upgrade." im probally not going to say any thing about the phone you dont know but it reafems the fact that it is real and is as good as advertized. and in the Milford store i was told i was the only person to ask about the phone so i should be the only one with it for a while. im the 1st person in the list for the saleperson. i cant wait for that call in november.
the phone= it self has the diamond back like the unlocked version. i dont know i asked why cause sprints diamond has a soft touch back and he said "the test group didnt like that feture." but i said if ur typing on the table the phone will wiggle cause of the uneven back. i think att was lazy and told htc to change the keyboard and ship the phone out. lol. and the phone is so light. the tilt is a brick compared to this phone. i currently hava lg cu500 and it is bout .25" taller and not much thicker. and that is good cause you get a ful keybaord.
the keyboard= lost the upper top row of just numbers. but it has a lot of quick bottons for text and internet and such. also has a phone style number pad on the keyboard. the keys felt nice and the sliding was smooth. and the screen responded nice. though the accelerometer was not as resposive as he iphone when you moved the phone when viewing webpages. but the zoom was sick.
the camera= i didnt really take pics but the pics he toke and had on the phone was clear. he also showed me the card reader program. with this program you take a pic of a bussines card and it scans the info and make a new ocntact on your phone. it toke like 15 sec for it to scan i thought it froze but it was understandable and still amazinfg when all the info was pust in the correct name, address, etc. sections on the screen. the touch flo with pics are amazing and the screen is so nice. the phone had a led flash if i remember correct. i was so distracted by the pretty screen and touch flo i didnt take time to look much at the buttons and such on the phnone. but i temember a white/yellow thing below the camera lense.
what the phone comes with. the phone i looked at was a test phone so jow said all he got in his black unmarked box was cd, phone, usb, and charger. i know when i went to the sprint store in Hamden, CT where i live and looked at the diamond it came with that and a holtster, air buds, screen protector. i hope att add these things cause for the price i kinda expect it, and htc makes them for the unlocked phone so it should happen.
touch flo was sick. it works as adverticed. they obviously added a att store tab. the pics scrooled nice, and the music player was cool. the contact was scroolable too. i mean everything that you already know is there.
so in closing. the 1st week in november is the date to look for. not this oct 23 but im ok with being proved wrong lol. please excuse and grammer errors. the price should be $300- $400 with the rebate. its not the iphone so they are not going to make there money of volume. and if i remember correct it is a dark red color. i hope this was helpfull to someone cause i was excited when i saw it. though i played it cool. lol Thanks

I don't know if he was trying to be pejorative with his reply, but I enjoyed your long post and its little details.
I'm a bit disappointed with the ATT version of this phone from all accounts. There are really two big things for me. First, the top row of keys would be far more useful had it been left alone as numbers in my opinion. I'm sure I'll get used to it if I end up buying the Fuze, but it's still a disappointment.
The second issue is really just an annoyance, which may end up being completely null in the end. It's the Diamond back, and how prone to wobbling it seems it will be. However, without a tilting screen it is unlikely I would ever really be typing on it while on flat surface anyway (in fact, I normally pick up my Tilt to type even with the tilting screen). And ever since discovering Pocket Controller Pro I'm even less likely to even touch my phone while it's on my desk. So maybe the positives of the aesthetic Diamond back actually outweigh the probably minor negatives of its functionality.

It's odd, my Fuze actually sat on a table and stayed in one position, didn't lean either way, just sat there with the way the back was. I had no problems with it. Also, I'm surprised to see you didn't like the symbols on top, most people I've spoken with (myself included) like the functionality of the symbols. Oh well, to each their own.
Which store in Milford? I used to live there but i'm in college in NYC now. At the Post mall or next to the Starbucks and stuff?
yes the one in the mall. the one by starbuks had a guy that was going for the training but as far as i know there was no test phone at that store. which is weird cause that is the bigger store.
and also i did test typing with the diamond back and it in fact did wobble when typing on a flat surface. though ur right u probably would just hold it rather than type on a flat surface.

Even if it does, you can remove it.
With 3rd party software or with a feature that is built-in?
There are countries passing out laws that a camera on a phone must make that noise so people in the area know a photo is being taken. I was just wondering if AT&T Fuze was on that list.

if the phone is on silent it wont or im sure you can do a tweak or registry change anyway
all right, thanks!
A friend of mine got the nokia n82 with a 5 MP camera. The problem that he finds with it is that the camera makes that noise through the speaker when he takes a picture with it. Even when his phone is on silent or when his headphones are plugged in. I don't think he's found a tweak for it yet.
I was just wondering if it was the same with the Fuze. If anyone who has it can confirm it, it will be greatly appreciated.
when "Joe" toke the picture for the business card it did make a flash sound. though i dont know if the feature can be turned off. but like posted before im sure someone here will be able to fix that no prob.
and on a side note has anyone got any new on the android OS working on the fuze.

Damn, just googled Milford, CT, and it would be an hours drive... Guess I'll have to wait until release to play with the Fuze
P.S. To the guy with the camera questions, every HTC phone that I know of has had the option to turn off the camera sound...

That's the same question I was about to ask. When you say dark red, do you mean as in the Blackjack II?
yes i do mean a dark red like the black jack II. it was ruby, dark burgundy color. i maybe mistaken cause i was blinded by the sole fact that i has the phone in my hand. lol

Well there are two reasons I would prefer the numbers. First of all, it's more like an actual computer keyboard. That would make it more comfortable and normal feeling - at least in theory. Second - and more importantly - I type numbers more often than I type symbols. Having the convenience of not needing to press the function key would be very nice.
I suppose it could go either way though. I'm definitely going to try out the keyboard before I buy, and I'll likely try out the Sprint version (or unlocked HTC version, if I can get my hands on one for a few minutes without purchasing it) also just to make sure. With a fifth row, I'm sure it's an improvement over the four rows on my Tilt no matter which configuration though, so it's not even close to a deal breaker. Just a little disappointment.
Out of curiosity, why would you prefer symbols? I really can't think of a reason why they would be better than numbers, so I'm wanting to know from someone who has that opinion.

i think most people don't mind the number PAD because you can press Fn twice to do a number lock. And since the numbers are grouped together, theoretically it's easier to type series of numbers...ie. phone number
i didn't like the fact that 5th row # was removed (they added that 5th row for THAT REASON!), but then I can see other people's point as well...oh well, i've come to accept that fact, as long as Fuze doesn't make us wait any longer

Earlier today (4/4/16) i was confronted by my dad about not picking up my phone so i checked noticed 1 missed call and a txt message. time went by i decided to call a family member and the call would not connect, tried customer service (metropcs) from the phone again phone call would not connect. so i decided to call metropcs to see if m account was in good standing or if they were having some service failures in my part of town. It comes down to checking the device i picked it up rapidly and heard a rattle from the rear of the phone so i removed my sd card and sim and shook it again and heard that same rattle. That is when i decided i would record ths rattle and post it to see if anyone knows why this is happening ( i cannot open the phone because i just received the phone from amazon less then 2 weeks ago. i still have warranty)
should i be concerned my replacement phone will do the same ?????
id imagine you guys would not troll the phone number i have in the video. that is because it is my work number.

That is when i decided i would record ths rattle and post it to see if anyone knows why this is happening ( i cannot open the phone because i just received the phone from amazon less then 2 weeks ago. i still have warranty)
should i be concerned my replacement phone will do the same ?????
id imagine you guys would not troll the phone number i have in the video. that is because it is my work number.
thanks in advance

Mine does the same thing something rattles around inside around the camera/ SIM/ fingerprint scanner area. It's done it since I got it first I thought it was a button, then I thought maybe it was the spring mechanism inside SIM slot 2 so I put a dead SIM card in that I had laying around but it still does it even with that in. I aIso have a microSD card installed so it's not that either.

Na it's still under the manufacturers 1 year warranty or else I would. Plus I'm pretty sure I'm going to be selling it soon. Sadly I love the phone, best phone I ever had but it's been out 6 months now and doesn't have any attention from developers. I need ROMs ,kernels and mods to flash. That's why I buy Android phones. I bought this one thinking with the price and this thing having the hardware specs it does that developers would be flocking to this phone. So it looks like I'm going to be heading to Nexus land because one thing I learned from this phone is that I can't own a phone without a fingerprint scanner again lol I love that thing.
My assumption is that the rattling is from the camera sensor being shaken around. The Pure XL (and its many other named "variants") have OIS capabilities for the camera, where the image sensor can move/tilt a tiny bit to compensate for small movements when taking a picture/video, which will not result in a blurry product.
I'm not sure if it is supported in other camera apps, but it's automatic in the stock camera app when you focus on something when taking a picture, but for video you have to turn it on in the settings (Gear>Anti-shaking).
If you turn the phone over so that the rear camera faces towards you, focus the rear camera on your face with the dedicated shutter button, and move the phone around slightly, you can see the sensor tilting to track your face.
On a side note, not sure if you guys have this problem, but when I don't use my Pure XL's camera for a bit of time (and don't have the stock camera app in my recent apps), it takes a really long time for it to automatically focus when I open the app, but if I shake it around, it will start focusing right away.

That's funny I just literally found out it was the camera eye or whatever you call it under the lense I was just messing around with the camera and saw it move.

Plz advice on phone to use as IPCameras.

Hello,
I have a small project I was thinking of doing : I have a synology server and I would like to hook to it an IP camera using an old phone.
The trick is, I am not a phone expert, that's why I am here
The idea would be to put the phone in a flower pot and take the camera module from it and make a hole in the flower pot for the camera. And only the camera. I will wire the camera to the phone...
The phone will need a good camera, even in low light considering it will mostly record inside the house.
The phone should have the hability to be rooted.
The phone should be super cheap, otherwise there is no point, right :silly: So I am thinking of second hand phone less than 20 Euros.
Thanks for your help.
There are a lot of decent apps that let you use a phone as an IP security/monitoring camera.
The most common app is IP Webcam https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pas.webcam&hl=en
Any decent phone will do a good job. But you won't be able to "remove" the camera module from the phone. It's all integrated. you'll have to use the whole phone as one piece.
You MIGHT find you can remove the camera module on a few phones, and extend it with wiring. But I doubt it will retain the same video quality if the wiring is even slightly long.
I would check eBay or Swappa for a cheap used phone.

Thanks for your advice on the software. I will try it on my actual phone...
However, have you got any recommendation on second hand phones? I have an i9000 but I think the video quality is not good enought. You can find it for 5 dollars on ebay... but still I need a better camera quality. Advice? (I will dig on old reviews on my side)
It seems that the i9100 would do the job.... but I am still looking at the best for low light
Yea, it has a 720p camera. I wouldn't go any lower than that. You'd have to go digging through some reviews, or do some detailed Googling to find which older phones have a camera that's good in low light.
