June 19, 2009 - Phoenix III: Improving Upon The Best-- SCREENS UP - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Phoenix III
"Improving upon the best."
Introduction:
Phoenix has a long-standing reputation of being one of the finest Business-Class ROMs for the HTC Kaiser, while never lacking features for those who need a bit of entertainment. It's been a while since the release of Phoenix II, but we promised you that the wait would be worth it. After months of planning and building a ROM based on user contributions and desires mentioned over at the state-of-the-art Phoenix Development Center, we are proud to present Phoenix III.
Built upon Windows Mobile 6.5, Phoenix III is the fastest Phoenix ROM ever and argubly the most stable. Phoenix is designed by business users, but not just for business users. You will find that, as with every Phoenix version, that we have released a product that can be used on a daily basis very comfortably, and we promise that you'll never want to re-flash again (except to new versions) and if you don't agree, tell us on PDC and we'll make it right to the best of our abilties.
Conditions:
Phoenix III has been an experiment in collaboration, so far to some pretty good results. If you download Phoenix III, we want you to contribute at the Phoenix Development Center. We will not force you to register to download the ROM itself, but any and all bugfix patches will be released ONLY at PDC.
Please, once you register, contribute, by telling us what you would like to see in future versions.

Hi,
I am uploading 3.1...It has the NeoS2007_Driver_Pack_Beta_1 openvg drivers built in. It does NOT have opera since opera is only working right now if installed by a cab file which you can find on pdc.

Congrats
congrats for ANOTHER wonderful rom brothers, im downloading the new release now you guys are great.
heres a theme

Just a suggestion but how about a link over on the PHX 2 thread to help get people here?? Just so they don't have to search through all the other threads in the KRD forum.

Any Screen shots?
Congratulations with the development of Phoenix III. Will you be adding any screen shots of this great ROM soon?
Thanks for all your hard work Dev team.

I just had to log on and say that my first impression of this rom is just amazing. I loved the P II rom but it was sluggish and ran choppy for me. This rom is awesome. Thank you for all of your hard work. I will buy you coffee/beer when I can.

sorry if this is a dumb question but whats stock first?
just a follow up: ive been flashing for about a year and had no idea about doing this.

It's actually an old Hermes trick and actually doesn't really apply to the Kaiser in theory. But we've found that for some odd reason, if you flash the stock ROM first, it seems to help prevent a bad flash with some of these high up build numbers. It could be a placebo effect though.
It worked on the hermes because Hermes was formatted differently.

Means to flash the "stock att/htc" ROM first (it's on the same post on PDC). This ensures that EVERYTHING is cleaned out from other cooked ROMs and provides an stable/consistent based to install the new ROM over. While it's not completely necessary every time we are asking everyone to do it this time that way we can be sure that any bugs are legit and not leftovers from some other ROM (and yes, we've already seen this from people that have NOT flashed the stock...).
So please EVERYONE take the whole 3 min it takes and flash the stock ROM first. Thank You.

Downloading. I hope to see the OpenGL driver with this extension to smooth out the graphics. I cant remember the name off hand but it does amazing thing. Its found in Mbarvians 3.1 Solace ROM.

There's some kind of OpenGL thingymabob that KZI posted at PDC in the addons section for use with the latest opera, grab that, if that's not what you're referring to.

Use OpenVG its an extension for OpenGL. If you use that I will never flash again!

New version of Op sounds pretty sweet too, try it out.

After flashing this last night I've had my File system go bad twice. I thought it had done in my sd card, but upon reflash sd was fine. I don't really know what to make of that, but when i try to lauch programs it will often say somthing about certificates. It won't sync and when i did get to look at the file tree it was all messed up. When i reflashed my sd card was fine, but icontacts refused to see anything.
I did not flash stock, but i never do and i've flashed most of the roms josh has made.
Cabs: openVG addon for opera, opera 9.7 (hells yes), tilt keyboard fix, google maps, and keyboard speed increase.
Any ideas? I loved the rom, but it's crapped out on me twice in a day...

do a stock flash, then a re-d/l and reflash, let it customize, and hard-reset. then tell us if you still have issues.

Like your ROM, but recently I could not open your homepage recently, also could not download your ROM by 4share and media link. I am in China, is there any problem?

Awesome!!
One issue-
I listen to streaming radio all day- Via this link- (saved in my "notes")
http://clearchannel.kicks-ass.org/cc.php?name=WTAM&url=www.wtam.com
It opens Opera, which triggers windows media- and always played all day without a problem on other roms. Not sure if it's this version of Opera, but now, it connects for about 10 seconds, then Opera pops back up & it stops.
Any ideas? Thanks-

Do NOT add the keyboard speed increase or google maps. Both are already built into the rom. Google maps is the most current version already.

This is not helpful. If you want to post a bug, give us details. What keyboard, soft or hardware? What device, tilt or Kasier?
Come on people--what can I fix if you just say it doesn't work correctly. I am betting you have a tilt and didn't install the tilt keyboard fix so your function keys aren't mapped correctly.....

Im excited that it will support widgets.
Sounds cool, we jus gotta wait like 10 years for it to be released
REPOST> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503739
cant waittt im excited ive been waiting 4 this update
Can't wait for all the awesome widgets that will come from this. That was one of the main areas lacking in the builds so far.
How long have we been waiting for this update? Since January 15th?
I guess Google is going to keep teasing us with rumored release dates, release details and screenshots until we wake up one morning to see our phones with an update available. So many noobs will be in a hurry to install it and come crying "I lost my root!"
I see only problems ahead with this. Still... I've bene playing with Haykuro's builds and thus far... I like it. But I don't think that I'll use it until Google releases the official version. But who knows... Haykuro (a 17 year old kid) is starting to make Google look bad.
I say we all thank him by donating his way to MIT!
What update... im already Up to Date... lmao ... check the sig

Haykuro's ROMs are pretty freakin stable. I updated yesterday to 5.0.1G and can honestly say my phone is faster and more stable than it ever has before(even when it had the stock ROM). The only thing I've found that doesn't work is the IM app but then it has the gchat app separate(which does work) and you can always dl Hi AIM, Hi MSN, etc for the others.
I think Google had to release that, after all, there is a 17 year old high school student who made two versions run on the G1, and also customized them by adding a few things from other versions, as well as apps to SD!
I really can't believe that it's a coincidence that they released the beta a day after Haykuro got the most stable versions working!
I expect it will be coming as an official update very soon, or Google is going to look very bad!
Unless I have a huge problem, I'm sticking with Haykuro!
Well now that its official i can say what I've wanted to say for weeks, why on earth are there so many people getting all excited about Haykuro's build? Seems like a total waste of time and space to me now that the real thing is coming and will actually work without flaws. I will wait for JF version. Copy and paste will be sweet!!!

Haykuro's build(at least the 5.0.1G with apps to sd) works beautifully... The only thing I've found that doesn't work better than my phone has ever worked before is the IM app. But that's useless for me since the Gtalk app does work(again, beautifully) and I use Hi AIM and Hi MSN for those services. I have found no flaws that are any more significant than I've had in the JF versions and everything works MUCH better.
Haykuro's builds are indeed awesome and extremely impressive but they're not without their key flaws. A lot of my favourite apps don't function properly or work at all on these builds and the autorotate was so slow I had to turn it off. I still think I'd prefer to stick with 5.0G for now than to switch back to JF 1.42.
I definitely recommend 5.0G for someone looking for the best cupcake experience with root - I definitely wouldn't hold my breath for the OTA release + modded rom with root, it could be awhile and Haykuro's builds are stable enough now (and getting more stable every few days with frequent updates).
You DO realize that the apps that don't work is because they were designed for 1.1 and not 1.5 right? It is no fault of Haykuro's ROMS as they wouldn't work on Google's release either. It's up to the Devs to make them compatible and with the new SDK they can!
Copy and Paste works great in Haykuro's builds: Menu > More > Select Text.

I think Google had to release that, after all, there is a 17 year old high school student who made two versions run on the G1, and also customized them by adding a few things from other versions, as well as apps to SD!

I don't think Google were rushed into anything. The simple fact of the matter is that they are not ready to release yet. I'm running Haykuro's 5.0.1G and I think it works really well, and is pretty much close to production quality, but the point is it isn't yet. Bear in mind it based off of Google and HTCs own builds for the Magic, which it still yet to be released. I'm sure the Magic hardware has been locked down for some months now, so it is the software stack they are waiting on.
The fact that Haykuro has got it out and working for the G1 is a tremendous testament to his skills, and to those who've given him assistance, but it is still based on an unfinished product. At some point, there will be a code freeze and the Magic will be released, and I'd expect to see the official Cupcake build shortly after then. Of course, by the time T-Mobile gets it's hands on to it, they'll probably nerf it into uselessness anyway, so there will still be a need for the Haykuro's/JFs of the community!

Dave

Actually, this does make me rather angry. When the G1 was released with p*ss poor Bluetooth support, one of the reasons they gave is that they they had it all working, but they weren't happy with the API and didn't want to "lock it down" as they would have to support this going forward so as not to break any applications developed for the released version of Android in any future revisions.
Now we are seeing new Android versions, and apps are breaking on these versions. I can only assume this is mostly down to changes in the Android APIs.

Dave

com'on man have some patience, or update your phone with haykuro's builds. Look at the fact that what Android 1.5 has it took 2 years for apple to put in iPhone and android 1,5 will be there before iPhone OS 3.0. Palm is still working on stuff we already have.
Android 1 to 1.5 is the fastest development lifecycle we've ever seen. We knew about 1.5( a.k.a cupcake ) because of the fact that Android is opensource and all the world knows whats going on. its not a closed door development scenario like every other major mobile OS.
Just rejoice these facts and feel happy that you have an android phone.
Well, im really glad to finally hear something from google about the Cupcake update. Im currently using the JF 1.42 MOD and its really cool very stable and no issues, and I wouldnt move to the official Cupcake until JF releases his update bcoz I dont want to loose Multi-Touch
Not that its very useful.......but its a nice show off , and gives iphone owners no edge or any other cool features over my lovely G1 ))

Bare WM 6.5 23009 Cooked ROM with unnecessary items removed ~ Witschey

Bare WM 6.5 23009 Cooked ROM with unnecessary items removed.
UPDATED on Sept. 4, 6:20 pm US Central Time
Starting with with September 10, 2009 I have decided to consolidate Bare WM 6.5 builds into only one (1) thread. I suggest you subscribe to the following thread to be kept abreast of future updates:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4469872&postcount=1
The cooked ROM and files that I am sharing here are based on the osKitchen (by OndraSter) which can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540704
The objective of this ROM is was to get rid of as much unnecessary items in the Windows Mobile 6.5 source files in order to make as much RAM available on my Kaiser as possible after the installation of WM 6.5. However I didn't want to 'cripple' features that I needed/wanted to have installed.
The result is a very stable WM 6.5 ROM that uses about 33 MB of RAM while the Kaiser is idle (and before you install your own applications). That means that you will have close to 70MB of free RAM with this cooked ROM. The size of the cooked ROM flash image (the NBH file) is: 54.2 MB
What I may consider 'unnecessary files' may not be considered the same by others. Therefore I am listing the WM 6.5 items that I removed so that you can determine if this cooked ROM fits your needs. I am also enclosing a folder titled "Files removed from sources.rar" which will show you EXACTLY what was removed. If you miss one of the removed items, simply move it back (to the same directory) and cook a ROM.
** General overview of what was removed:
- All of the non-essential OEM and EXT applications which normally ship with "Os Kitchen". I left only the OEM and EXT items which I found to be necessary for the normal operation of the ROM on the Kaiser. If through your own testing you find that one or more are unnecessary please let me know (as I would want to get rid of it as well!)
- Ringtones and other sound files which are not necessary for the normal operation of the ROM (if you miss one or more of those files you can easily put them in an SD card and access them from there)
- All files (CPR, Images, etc.) that relate to a resolution that is not supported by the Kaiser.
- The 'Calculator' application because there is plenty of great calculators for WM PPC out there, and I don't like to have software duplication.
- All "Windows Live" related stuff, because I don't use it.
- All 'games' that come with WM 6.5 because I don't use them, and there is much better games in the marketplace.
- IPSEC related files because I don't use that type of 'virtual tunnel'.
- IRDA because the Kaiser doesn't have infrared functions.
- LiveSearch because I prefer Google.
- .Net 2.0 framework, because I install another version that contains 2.0 & 3.5
- Unnecessary Mobile Office templates
- Remote Desktop (because I don't use that software. I prefer RDM+, which I install separately...not in the ROM)
- TaskManager (because I prefer to install Advanced Task Manager...separately, not in the ROM)
- Skybox (because I don't need to have a software store on my Kaiser)
- All Themes except for 'Classic Blue' (because I prefer to install my own themes...separately, not in the ROM)
- VOIP (because no application comes with WM 6.5 for VOIP, and therefore the files just wastes space)
- Welcome Center (Because I am experienced enough with WM 6.5 that I don't need somebody to guide me)
- All Windows Mobile Widgets (because I prefer to install my own ....separately not in the ROM).
*****
In addition to the file removals that I describe above, I made a few changes.
The following changes apply to BOTH "Vanilla" and "Chocolate" flavors of the cooked ROM:
- I changed the boot screen back to the original HTC screen that says "smart mobility"
- I changed the animation screen back to the original HTC screen that has an animated HTC logo
- I changed the boot up sound to one that uses aprox 100K
- I changed the Windows Startup screen to that of Windows Mobile 7
- I added software to fix the animation startup sound (which didn't work in the original build)
- I added software to fix the animation boot up screen (which was mixed with some other stuff that I removed)
- I added a registry entry that changes the default skin on Windows Media Player to Diamond Portrait.
- I added code to install 'Random Access' in the Contacts Screen. (allows quick access to people by clicking letter on the right margin)
- I added code to re-install the Hexagon background in the start menu, which recent version of WM 6.5 have removed.
- I added a registry entry to remove the 'tap time' that is required when selecting items in WM 6.5 folders.
Screen shots of the "Vanilla" Flavor are here:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The following changes apply ONLY to the "Chocolate" flavor of the ROM:
- I added an application called 'Ariel Battery' which starts up automatically upon bootup and sits on top of the Start button showing battery in graphical and percentage mode)
- I added Advanced Task Manager
- I added a 6 item Comm Manager to replace the 3 item one that comes standard with WM 6.5
Screen shots of the "Chocolate" flavor are here:
NOTE: For those who do not like the Chocolate or Vanilla flavors, I am making available the source files so that you can make any necessary changes to suit your taste. All my changes are in the EXT folder and are clearly labeled with "-PW" after the folder name. So you can choose to keep them or remove them based on your personal needs.
And here is an Spb Benchmark test on a fresh copy of this ROM. I don't know if this type of tests are trustworthy, and I have no benchmark to compare it with. All I can say is that the OS feels very fast and responsive. Don't base yourself on the benchmark. Try it and see if it works for you. It does for me.
Here are the files:
a)You can download the "Vanilla" flavored cooked ROM (which is ready to be flashed directly on your device) from here:

c) You can download the OEM, SYS and EXT folders (which have been purged of unnecessary items), and replace the respective folders that are in the "sources" directory of osKitchen from here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/125334762/20ced38f/Sources.html
d) You can download the "Vanilla Flavour" osKitchen configuration file (which you MUST use in combination with the OEM, SYS, EXT folders shown in item "c" to cook your ROM in osKitchen) here:

f) You can download the 'removed' OEM, SYS, and EXT folders (which you can use to verify what I removed....or to move back something that I removed but that you want) here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/125338650/aef934ef/Files_removed_from_sources.html
g) "List Start Menu" is a great replacement for the 'Honey Comb" start menu which is included with these ROMs. I made adjustments to the application, and I am using it personally EVERY day. I am never going back to the 'Honey Comb' start menu. To see if it fits your needs, see screen shots and download the installation cab go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4351597&postcount=47
KNOWN ISSUES:
1) Missing Notes application prevents note taking during phone conversation. This issue was reported in post #2 - SOLVED
2) The "Wireless LAN" menu choice (available when selecting "settings" inside of Comm Manager) doesn't work. This issue was reported in post #26 - SOLVED
3) Missing MMS Options. Standard Builds of WM 6.5 DO NOT come with MMS. To get MMS read other threads such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500869. This issue was reported in post #41 & 47 - SOLVED
4) Can't change the sound made when opening / closing keyboard. Look for SlidingSound.exe in the Windows directory. I will incorporate a shortcut to this application in a future release. - PENDING
TIPS:
- After the ROM loads, go to phone settings (Start-Settings-Personal-Phone) and in the "Phone" tab select the Ring Type that you want to use. You can put Ringtones in any folder of your Kaiser and they will appear in the "Ring Type" pull down menu. I put them on external storage (SD Card) under a directory called "My Ringtones". This issue was reported in post #33 - SOLVED
Enjoy!
IMPORTANT: The only thing that I ask in return for my contribution is that if you find more space savings you share them with me. I left several items in the OEM and EXT folders because I know for a fact that some of those items ARE needed for the correct functioning of critical features such as movie file playback. However some of those items may not be necessary. If you find out that they are not necessary, or you find other files in the SYS folder that could be removed without affecting performance, please let me know by posting a message on this thread.
Welcome here bro.
How is it when you removed Notes and you click while incall on Notes? Because in default it opens Notes with some predefined layout and caller name.
any screens?

yeah just started recently using it, was thinking of flashing a super light rom to see if there is a noticeable speed increase in android, the hero android rom i pretty buggy still but is coming along nicely, graphically it looks really good, android with wifi is excellent, bt and camera doesn't work on either tho
This could be interesting. I too hate all the extra stuff in the phone that I never use. I'm going to try it. My biggest complaint about WM is the threaded SMS -- it seems over time it takes longer and longer to load messages. I think im going to try your rom.

Just what i was looking for a 6.5 Bare bones rom running android hero sense ui as well
This is exactly what I want!! I was going to try to develop a very similar ROM but you've done all the work for me! I have so much junk on my phone that I don't use, so this will be perfect. I'll flash it tomorrow, then load of spb mobile shell, pocketplay, iGO, a few others and I should have a nice clean setup for once!
btw, great post. easy to understand and all the files are very helpful.
Awesome...
just Awesome.. thank you very much

I used Spb Mobile Shell 3.01 when I was using WM 6.1, but after switching to WM 6.5 I realized that if I put a little bit of work on the WM 6.5 Today Screen (Titanium) I could completely get rid of spb Shell, saving some RAM in the process and some confusion as well.
I encourage you to give the new Today screen a shot. I use the following plugins on my WM 6.5 today screen:
Clauncher - You can get 3 Launchers (for up to 9 applications) from the first post, and an additional 3 Launchers (which I created) on post 163 (page 17)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=514490
Comm Manager
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513747
Titanium Notifications - The original one had some bugs. I fixed it. Get it from post #146.

Your question is not easy to answer because it depends on how you use your device. The battery will drain quickly if:
- You keep the light on all the time.
- You are constantly connected to MS Exchange.
- You do a lot of web browser use or play a lot of music/video files.
- You keep the 3G connection on all the time (I switch to GSM/EDGE most of the time and only use 3G when I really need it)
- You keep both GSM/EDGE or 3G on while also having WiFi on.
So I am afraid I can't answer your question. For me battery life is not an issue as I put the phone in the charger every time I don't use it. I even have a charger in the car for while I am traveling.

Bare WM 6.5 23028 Cooked ROM with unnecessary items removed.

Starting with with September 10, 2009 I have decided to consolidate Bare WM 6.5 builds into only one (1) thread. I suggest you subscribe to the following thread to be kept abreast of future updates:

This ROM was cooked with the osKitchen (by OndraSter) which can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540704
The ROM follows the principle of getting rid of unnecessary items in the Windows Mobile 6.5 source files in order to make as much RAM available on my Kaiser as possible after the installation of WM 6.5. However I didn't want to 'cripple' features that I needed/wanted to have installed.
The result is a vROM that uses about 32 MB of RAM while the Kaiser is idle (and before you install your own applications). That means that you will have close to 70MB of free RAM with this cooked ROM. The size of the cooked ROM flash image (the NBH file) is: 51 MB, leaving 154 MB of storage space available on the Kaiser.
What I may consider 'unnecessary files' may not be considered the same by others. Therefore I am listing the WM 6.5 items that I removed so that you can determine if this cooked ROM fits your needs. I am also enclosing a folder titled "XXXX- Kitchen Removed Sources.zip" which will show you EXACTLY what was removed.

- LiveSearch because I prefer Google.
- Unnecessary Mobile Office templates
- Remote Desktop (because I don't use that software. I prefer RDM+, which I install separately...not in the ROM)
- Task Manager (because I prefer to install Advanced Task Manager...separately, not in the ROM)
- Skybox (because I don't use Microsoft 'My Phone' and related services.)
- Skymarket (because I don't need a software store on my phone)
- All Themes except for 'Classic Blue' (because I prefer to install my own themes...separately, not in the ROM)
- VOIP (because no VOIP application comes with WM 6.5, and VOIP applications like Skype work without these files. So they seem to be a waste of space. If anybody disagrees and can explain the purpose of those files please let me know.)
- Welcome Center (Because I am experienced enough with WM 6.5 that I don't need somebody to guide me)
- All Windows Mobile Widgets (because I prefer to install my own ....separately not in the ROM).
*****
In addition to the file removals that I describe above, I made a few changes which apply to BOTH Chocolate and Vanilla Flavors of the ROM.
- I changed the boot screen back to the original HTC screen that says "smart mobility"
- I changed the animation screen back to the original HTC screen that has an animated HTC logo

- I added code to change the Start menu to a single column vertical list. I consider that MUCH more useful than the hexagon grid.
- I added a registry entry to remove the 'tap time' that is required when selecting items in WM 6.5 folders.
- I added a registry entry to allow two way phone conversations to be recorded with any 3rd party software.
- I added a registry entry to display 'Recording' in the phone menu (shows up in the menu only during a call)
- In addition the "Chocolate" flavor has these changes:
- Replaced the battery indicator for one that shows the percentage remaining (in increments of 10%), and changes color (White/Orange/Red) depending on the amount of battery remaining.
- Added Advanced Task Manager
- Replaced regular Comm Manager with a 6 item Comm Manager to replace the 3 item one that comes standard with WM 6.5

You can put Ringtones in any folder of your Kaiser and they will appear in the "Ring Type" pull down menu. I put them on external storage (SD Card) under a directory called "My Ringtones".
- Missing MMS Options. Standard Builds of WM 6.5 DO NOT come with MMS. To get MMS read other threads such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500869.
- HTC Task Manager missing. The source files do not have the HTC task manager and I don't like it anyway; so I am keeping that away on purpose. If you want the HTC task manager please install it on your own, or cook your own version of my ROM.
- OEM/EXT folders - If you cook your own ROM using my files, you will be able to identify what OEM/EXT packages were added by me, because I follow each package with "-PW". Packages that do not have "-PW" came with the osKitchen, and they appear to be necessary for the proper functioning of the ROM, but I am unable to provide an explanation since I didn't put them together. Contact OndraSter (the maker of osKitchen) in case you have a question about an OEM/EXT package that do not have "-PW" after it.
- Aligning Screen - After you install the new ROM, remember to align the screen. You can do that here: Start - Settings - System - Screen and align your screen from there.
- Move your Kaiser configuration from an old ROM to a new one - Unfortunately the upgrade ROM feature of spb Backup doesn't seem to work properly for this new build of WM 6.5; I successfully upgraded from WM 6.5 build 23009 to 23028 using spb Backup's upgrade ROM feature, but when I tried to upgrade from 23028 to 23034 I got many errors.
- SIM Manager - Left out on purpose. Read solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4372512&postcount=79
Known Issues:
Small Fonts get blurry on Titanium / Today Screen, and sometimes images on Today Screen plug-ins (such as Artesea Twmr 6.5r) get distorted. - This issue has been confirmed by other people cooking WM 6.5 23028 regardless of the cook or kitchen used. It seems to be an issue related to the Microsoft code, and I am unable to fix it.

Downloading Vanilla
Thanks for providing this. This is exactly what I've been looking for. The base OS so I can install just the apps I want loaded and not have all the stuff I don't care about but have no way to remove.
One thing that would be nice to leave in would be the align screen process that starts up after loading the new ROM. I understand that if you're making your own ROM you can enter the alignment points into the build but when providing it for others it's kind of pain to try and get into the alignment setting when your screen isn't aligned in the first place. It's a minor thing process to go through after loading and you only have to do it once so leaving it in wouldn't be that big of a deal.
wau the available free storage is so massive compare to other 6.5 rom
i will try it over the weekend , install with m2d which is my prefer interface

I purposely didn't include the screen align screen at the start and I don't plan to do it in the future either. But that doesn't mean that you align your to fit your screen. After you load the ROM go to Start - Settings - System - Screen and align your screen from there.

Good to see somebody from KL in here! I have very good memories of the time I have spent in KL. I was there about 2 years ago leading a project at the Petronas Towers. Really like your country.

I understand you left it out on purpose and I understand how to fix it. I'm just pointing out that the settings only work for yor device and it's a pain to get to get to without having your screen aligned. Since everyone that downloads this ROM will have to run it why not have run automatically the first time it boots up?
Just a suggestion to make it a bit friendlier. It's your ROM so it's up to uou.
Thanks again for providing it.

A pain to navigate a few menus in order to align screen? I think that's a gross exaggeration. This version of WM 6.5 is finger friendly so you can navigate menus without super precision. So even if the settings are off a bit relative to your device, they will be close enough that you can navigate fairly easily.
I won't incorporate the welcome menu because they use up space and only work ONCE (during installation); so I think that between 'avoiding the pain of navigating a few menus) and having something stuck in memory that only gets used once, I favor the later.
I understand your point, but I will politely disagree.
I just want to say great Roms. I found your 23009 build a couple of days ago and thought it was great..it's just what I've been looking for! Today I upgraded to the 23028 build.
Theres 1 issue that I'm noticing in the 23028 build that I'm not sure is something with your ROM or with the build of WinMo OS itself. The issue is that I cannot setup a sync with Google to have my contacts and calendar synced to my phone. This worked fine on the 23009 build just fine. I have double and triple checked my settings with no luck. It tries to sync..but nothing is actually imported.
Just wanted to give you the heads up!
Keep up the great work!

I am afraid that I don't sync with Google. I use Microsoft Exchange and it works perfectly. What do you use to sync with Google. A third party application or an application that is built into my ROM? If it's a third party application you need to report the bug there. Otherwise perhaps somebody else reading this forum uses Google Sync and can help you.

I set a ring tone by placing it on my SD card, tap and hold the file and it will ask if you want to set it as the ringtone. once you do this you will be able to use the "auto set" time.
Thanks for helping!

Would this be something I should get if I wanted a bare bones ROM and wanted Manilla 2D? Is that even possible or do Today screens like cHome, M2D, Moto, etc. have to be cooked in to the ROMS? If its possible, will a simple CAB do the trick to install M2D?
Thanks! Much appreciated.

I have no idea. I have never used Manilla as I don't see the need for it.

Descriptions:
1. This is a "little clean" ROM for HTC Universal.
2. Free RAM is about 24MB with PIMs loaded (25-26MB without PIMs loaded), amount of free RAM will varry depends on how much PIMs (contacts, messages, softwares, etc.).
3. Free main storage is about 35MB.
4. ROM contains only standard packages from microsoft and some additional tool/software, so I think screenshot is not necessary.
If you need additional applications, please install it by your self.
5. This ROM is XPR compressed & I applied a file system filter taken from Raphael into this ROM (the function is similar to harddrive write cache on your windows PC), which has advantages & disadvantages (considering that it was intended for Raphael).
This only affect main storage. So if suddenly the device stops responding (hang up), the data that will remain is only the data saved after device entering the last suspend mode.
This means the new data will be written after the device entering suspend mode.
If you want to manual softreset your device, make sure to enter suspend mode for about 15sec & turn it on again before you do a softreset.
6. This ROM has been tested for about two weeks on a 64MB G3 & G4 device.
ADDED:
- Office 2010 with OneNote => Only on Release_v2 ROM..
- Macromedia Flash Player 4 plugin
- .NETCF 3.5
- TwCen font
- Some ringtone from Tomal's kitchen
- Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3
- Arcsoft MMS 5.0.27.63R1
- Battery percentage
- BT BPP 1.6.8.0
- BT FTP 1.2.33281.91
- BT SAP 3.1.0.0R2
- hc4_inbox
- HomeScreen++ (without clock)
- Added some DLL package from Diamond, Elfin, Mega, & Raphael
- SD Settings
- Performance applet
- PPC PIM Backup
- Oxios Hibernate
- PocketRAR
- RegEdit
- SmileySMS
- SRSWOW HD
REMOVED:
- Autoupdate
- Catalog
- Entertainment
- FirmWare Update (replaced with a dummy)
- RemoteDesktopMobile
- SampleMusic
- Software Quality Metrics (replaced with a dummy)
- Transcriber
- VoIP
- WelcomeCenter
- WindowsLive
- WindowsLive IM
*Known problems/limitations:
- Power point & Share point isn't work..
- The Auto kill process feature on HTC Task Manager default threshold is set to 9MB, could be annoying for some people.. To disable or re-adjusting threshold, open the Advanced Config utility then enter the desired threshold (or disabled it) under HTC Task Manager menu.
- If you experience problems with this new build eg. GSM stop responding (it's not totally hang up, but something like no signal, or you have a good signal reception but you can't make a call/sms neither connect to inet) please do some experiment on changing your radio ROM until you find the version that can work flawlessly with this OS build. Because both of my device has a problem of this, one of it can only work with 1.09 radio and the other one can only work with 1.17 radio.
*Additional info:
- If you aren't use the kitchen and you wanna change the PP, simply convert the "NK.NBF" file into "NK.NB" file via 'HTC64', then use 'PPCH' to program the desired PP, then convert it back to "NK.NBF" file via 'HTC64'.
- If you are using the kitchen, simply change the value of "PP" into your desired size.
- When building ROM using this kitchen, don't forget to check "Real WM6.5 AKU" option, & change "IMGSTART" value from '0' to '350000' under "OTHER" tab..!
- Just ignore whatever error messages that 'HTC64' gave you...
- WPA encryption is now supported.. See post #46 for details...
Instruction for flashing:
1. Make sure that your device is CID unlocked.
2. Fully charge your device by using AC adaptor.
3. Run "ROMUpgradeUt.exe"
4. DO NOT do a hardreset after flashing.
5. DO NOT do anything with your device while it's booting until you see Welcome screen (in fact, don't touch your device at all).
6. After calibrating the screen, now you can do anything.

Tutorial on using Ervius Visual Kitchen with HTC Universal...
Tutorial how to use the kitchen
Using this kitchen is quite easy (although may be a little bit confusing at first try).
OK, don't have time to talk nonsense. Here we go....
Start the kitchen by double klicking the exe file.
Next you have to do is activating all options in the drop down box:
1. DEVICE
2. LANGUAGE
3. EXT Build
4. SYS Build
5. XIP Build
6. ROM Res
7. ROM DPI
8. Real WM6.5 AKU
9. Other
After clicking on "OTHER" button, change the "IMGSTART" value from '0' to '350000'.
Then if you wish, you can change Pagepool size by changing value on "PP" (default is 6MB).
Next, click "CLOSE" to go back to main screen.
If you wanna enable/disable package included from building process, simply double click on package that you wish to include/exclude from ROM..
Click "CREATE" button.
Wait,,wait,,& wait... Just be patience OK!
When the kitchen is finished creating "OS-New.NB" file, the HTC64 window will popup.
Click "ENCODE" button.
Select project file (nk.prj) to open. => It's located under "%path%\EVK_182\TOOLS" folder.
Next, a warning message window will popup.
Just IGNORE that warning message by clicking on the "OK" button..!
Don't worry, it wouldn't harm your device (if you have the right ingredient on XIP part.. Otherwise, you guess it..)..
Next, click "Encode".
If there're no somethings wrong, a message window saying "Encode Successful" will popup.
Click "OK", then click "EXIT" button.
Well done, you've just created your own custom ROM..
Next, close the kitchen and start flashing your device...
OK, time to sleep now.... Good night..

Always nice to have another ROM to test
------------------------------
@ phezthie
Let us know more about this ROM!
Cool!!!
test on g3, thanks!
its definitely working with G3. fast n stable too wit spb ms. one problem encountered thou, wifi asking for predetermined number of key and cant connect with pre-configured wireless router...
Ya you're right, & thank you very much. But unfortunately I don't have enough spare time to find solution for that. I don't even have time for continuing make EVK to work with universal. Too much office work lately, & less sleep time too.
Perhaps I'll upload the kitchen (based on Luca's kitchen), so everybody can build his own style ROM, & hopefully will find solution for that. How about that?
Sounds good, please let us know any advance on your work
I regret there is not flash disk
OK,,kitchen attached...
Check out 1st post for download link, and 2nd post for tutorial using this kitchen...
@teddybear3k: Yes,,there is NO flashdisk. Because I don't like it..
Great!!! Thanks!!!!
I'm trying to cook a 23518 build and i've a question...
you say that 6.5 nk is in the kitchen... can i select modules instead of files selecting SYS packages to the compilation?
3 days test, feedback
with kitchen uploaded (wit big thnks to Shadow of course) i think more chefs will be forthcoming making this feedback moot nonetheless, for those who want to know, here it goes....
overall performance, commendable.... no freeze/hang experienced. fast and stable though a bit lesser ram (11-7Mb) compared to other light/vanilla roms available.
tested with add'l apps installed:
spb ms 3.5
ezmoney
fingerkeyboard2 (w/o arrows)
pbar
PIM's status:
581 contacts; 2397 appointments; 189 call logs & 2698 messages (i keep it available for ready reference )
on the otherhand, some minor glitch observed...:
wifi key as earlier reported - solution? i reconfigured my router
battery status (both on pbar indicator and system setting) indicates low but changes after a second or 2..
wit smiley sms enabled, it will cause not to open other messages..
cheers..

Yes, the batt status takes about 2sec for refresh after it's suspended state.
And can you explain further about can't open other messages while smileysms is enabled?
And thank you very much for your report & feedback..

sms threaded mode wit smiley enabled
you can view the messages on top of the list but most often you will not be able to open other messages anymore. the application seems to be not responding after opening the most recent sms.
nevertheless, sms works perfectly after i disabled the smiley...

Can`t download it.
Ok... here's my report.
I'm using T-Mobile MDA PRO.
1. Boot up are fast.
2. Running apps. are fast too (big 'page pool' ?)
3. Never happen to hang up.
4. Error when try to manually change the Band from GSM to WCDMA, I have to use apps . call 'BandSwitch' to force it so it can switch the Network Band from GSM to WCDMA or opposite.
5. The Sim Tool Kit Service are work too (first I thought it can't, but then when I change the SIM Card, it works, and then I realize that my main card are not supporting this Operator Service ).
6. I never try WiFi, so I can't tell anything about it.
7. I like the Home Screen ++ (more like 'Battery Status' ?), but why do you remove the Clock?
So far this is the best ROM I ever used, think I'll keep using it.
So, keep up the good work, Juragan !
Ok, that's all..

Not the Auto switching, coz I prefer to do it manually (which is to set my Network Band to WCDMA always, WCDMA is most faster in download rate than GSM - apalagi gw pake Matrix yg cepek/month pelan banget dahhh... ).
And I try it manually in the Phone Setting menu, then it says 'Unable to switch...' so I decide to using 'BandSwitch' apps.

Added the new build of WM6.1 (build 21057)..
Overall,,fells better than the 21056 build..
Tested for about two weeks on two G4 device only,,because I don't have any G3 device..
*change log from my old ROM (21056):
- PP changed to 6MB
- Small adjustment on XIP part to get it work with this new build
- Something I can't remember (I love to forgot something)
*Known problems/limitations:

The Ainol Novo 8 is a great little tablet but has been hampered by some early quality issues and about 4 or 5 firmware revisions that have all been good at something but not everything.
Recently a 2.3.4 beta Rom appeared on the Chinese speaking boards and was a major improvement over the 2.2 releases however as always they were in Chinese as a first language and contained stuff that was no use to us English speaking types. So I decided it was time to apply a bit of magic and make my own Rom. Links at the bottom of the post. This is a direct result of my playing about with the beta firmware then bringing it all together.

About This Firmware:
--------------------
After much frustration having to de-Chinese every firmware for this amazing little tablet I set about making an English one to save time and to learn a bit more about Android, while doing so I also added in the main Google apps that everyone wants but always has trouble getting to behave. Using the current 2.3.4 beta as a base I removed, replaced and added various things to give us a decent firmware that will make you proud to show off your tablet with the unfortunate brand name. (Hands up all those who have had a schoolboy snicker when telling someone who makes it)
While I take credit for the putting everything together in one easy to use package the real credit should goto all those people I sourced the component parts from. Enjoy the firmware
Changelog:
----------
8/11/2011:
Tidied and formatted readme.txt.
6/11/2011:
Minor update to correct bug in build.prop preventing Chianfire and Tegra games from working.
5/11/2011:
1st Release.
Sources:

http://tinyurl.com/64xhw3y I used the Browser and Google Music from this one. (Translated)

http://tinyurl.com/6y57c4s The tweaks used for the Market.
Other various sources for stuff about some of the other little tweaks.
Installation:
-------------
Flashing this is a breeze, simply copy the contents of the zip to your SD Card, insert into your Novo 8 and boot into Recovery with Power & Vol+.
Once booted perform the 3 wipes and then install the update and reboot. That's it, no need to install the AC3/DTS license or add Google apps.
If you spot the error about the factory_*blahblahblah*.aml file missing when booting into recovery mode just ignore it. I dumped the automated stuff as it bricked my unit the first time round when flashing the stock beta and I had to do a recovery with the original firmware release. All the automated bit really does is perform the 3 wipes and perform the install so why risk it when it takes only a few seconds to do.
When first booting the homescreen will go black/blank for about a minute. Don't panic this is quite normal it's just everything unpacking and setting up. Set up your wifi, add your Google account and off you go.
Features:
---------
- AC3/DTS Hardware Decoder works.
- Fast and Smooth 160dpi rom with build.prop tweaks to improve battery life and speed things up.
- 3G Modem support is present and has been confirmed working with these dongles . . .
Huawei E160 3G USB Dongle (ompudsman @ MP4Nations)
Huawei E1750 3G USB Dongle with Virgin UK sim. (GFZ @ XDA)
- Full English Rom set to UK region, no hidden Chinese menus to pop out at you. All Chinese only apps removed or replaced with english versions.
- Latest Market 3.3.11 with heavily modified build.prop to show as many apps as possible. This does actually show and install a far wider range of apps than before.
- Uses the free version of LauncherPro because it does seem the best for this Tablet, the Chinese firmwares seemed to have hard coded Chinese in the LauncherProPlus.apk The market will allow you to purchase the Plus Unlocker if you want those features.
- Preloaded with Google Browser, Gmail, Maps, Streetview, YouTube, Google Music, Latitude, Google Search, Calendar and Car Home.
- Google accounts will sync Contacts, Mail and Calendars correctly.
- YouTube plays HQ videos just fine without stutter or lag. (Assuming you have a good wifi signal)
- The stock video player plays most MPG, MP4, MKV files with AAC, MP3, AC3 audio. Plays 1080p quite happily as well if the storage device can keep up.
If you need wider format support but still with hardware decoding where possible get MX Video Player and the ARMv7 Codecs from the market.
- Most of the Games and Apps I have tried while testing work fine. Get Chainfire3D and buy the Pro key to enjoy some of the nice Tegra Games. Check my blog for compatibility of Tegra games.
- Wifi seems better under the new firmware.
Bugs: (Most of these have been documented as an issue with the base firmware)
-----
- Tablet likes to wake itself up now and then for no real reason. (Possible data connections causing it to wake)
- Sometimes the Power button does not work so you can't turn off the screen or power off. Install Quick Reboot off the market or hit the reset button.
- If the Screen is off and the Power button is not behaving another key will turn it on.
- Sometimes the Power Off dialog appears for no reason. Oddly not when in full screen games so far as I've noticed.
- Your Novo may disappear off the Market site for a while or completely. Mine went and then came back about a day later,
this is down to the modified build.prop. You can still download apps directly through the Market app on the Novo regardless.
- Some of the best apps are still not available in the market, Dolphin Browser HD, Facebook and Friendcaster to name a few. This is down to Google Market and not much seems to beat this last hurdle.
- Possible others (Let me know by posting on my blog or threads)
Disclaimer:
-----------
As with any custom firmware there is a risk of things going wrong so if it bricks your unit try a recovery image from Ainol and start again, if you are of a nervous disposition or the type of person who sues for a hobby please do not attempt to install this. The rom works fine on my unit and others have tried without issue, however mileage does seem to vary with this tablet.

Novo 8 2.3.4a Firmware UK Edition (nebularnerd.co.uk, fixed March 2021)
Thank you!
Hi Oberth,
Thank you so very much for the hard work and effort to put something together for this fantastic tablet! We have been hoping to see some english rom's being put together for some time but the fact that this is Android 2.3.4 with all the tweaks and best bits of previous rom's is excellent!!
Will be flashing your rom shortly and report back...
update: flashed and so far so good!
- Huawei E1750 3G dongle tested with Virgin UK Sim and all working.
Also will be uploading you rom to our website which may be found in the download section of the Ainol Novo 8 webpage.
(unable to post a link yet as need more posts)
Kind Regards
gadgetfreakz.co.uk
Thanks for the feedback
I actually bought my tablet from you guys through your ebay shop under the user id thedaybeforetomorrow was most pleased by the service.
Thanks for the offer to mirror and I hope the rom performs as it should, as not everyone can/will download from rapidshare I would like to add the links for your Novo 8 page to my first post here, my mp4nation thread and my blog.
Over at MP4 I have had some feedback regarding the market, while fully functional some have complained of the speed (mainly to do with the markets new design rather than tablet performance) so I am considering for the next release maybe offering both the older 2.xx style market and new 3.x market as separate firmware downloads so people can choose. Both the latest version I have used and the older one seem to see the same amount of apps visible so it's mainly a personal preference.
Just seen your test with the 3G Dongle, going to update here there and everywhere

wow, small world!
thank you for your custom and delighted to hear you are pleased with the service
will be testing further over the next few days, for some reason we did notice that the initial firmware form Ainol played 1080p files flawlessly then slowly playback became worse over following updates although other features/fixes had been implemented.
all mentioned above seem to be as you stated regarding the initial power up and blank screen. can't say we experienced the power button problem yet, works as it should.
the new market is indeed sluggish as with other tablets, a quick search for skype didn't show the main application as most likely with some others that you have mentioned. apart from the sluggish launch, the new market design is not so bad, personally prefer it now being used to it.
Ainol did advise an official firmware was due soon, maybe a mix of that and the firmware's you have worked with will give us an even greater improvement.
loving the honeycomb boot animation!
keep up the great work, will have the firmware link etc added shortly.
The playback issues in the later firmwares linked to the AC3/DTS license not being installed or disabled entirely so playback did get worse.
Can I ask you to re-download the firmware in the first post. I tidied up the readme.txt for readability. nothing else is changed.

sure no problem at all, we have uploaded the firmware to our novo 8 pages download section and provided link to the firmware and to this page at xda.
will download new file and replace the one we have on our server.
thanks again
Thanks for that I have added your page to the links section where ever this is posted and edited my blog to mention where I bought it from.
Can I ask if you could change the name from Oberth to Nebular Nerd on your page, just matches up with the blog then. My user name from here was from years back and I wish you could change it. Part of why I edited the readme was to aka the names

Now I´m happy with my tablet.
Hello from Spain
First of all, congratulations on your work with the tablet Ainola.
I wanted to ask if you know when it will be available in Spanish.
Thanks for everything.

I just checked and Spanish language is not included, maybe something for the next release
Languages included are: English (Australia / Canada / New Zealand / Singapore / UK / United States) & Chinese.
Thanks, I'll try to see how it goes anyway.
But if you can include it in the next version, would be welcome here in Spain.

That would be down to Oberth aka Nebula Nerd but don't believe it would be that hard to do, i'm sure he will let us know
Additional Languages
Hi kinterinho,
I shall have a look into adding additional languages into the firmware and see what that requires. This beta was released with only Chinese and English language files built in but I may be able to borrow some from another rom.
The only thing that might present a problem is if LauncherPro refuses to change all it's options to Spanish in the same way the default Chinese one would not become fully English when you changed the language. I shall have to experiment and see
Cheers for the update, having a few issues.
Iplayer app now apears to suck goats since using this ??
any ideas ?

Hi, I think you will find the BBC iPlayer app has always had issues.
Playback should be fine via the browser, this firmware plays iPlayer via stock browser although previous firmware required dolphin browser hd.

I appreciate you try it. In Spain would do well to include also the Spanish language.
I read on the post to see if there are any changes.
iPlayer is indeed pretty poor.
Yep confirming GFZ's post, it will play with the stock browser set to mobile but quality is pretty poor. I remember it running better on one the original stock roms. It could be one of a few things.
- Bug in the firmware with flash, although Youtube works through the various browsers ok. You can't use the Youtube app for comparison as it's not flash driven.
- Could be a VM Heap issue with it taking up to much space (need to play with that and see)
- Could be the higher dpi on top of the higher res causing the poorly coded app lots of effort in the upscale, dropping to the original 192dpi might cure it at the expense of fuzzy text and icons, again I need to test, not sure if dpi switchers play nice with this rom so you could at least hop between them for different tasks.
- I might try embedding it in the rom as well, The Youtube app hated being added to the tablet post flashing and performance was poor but ran just fine after being flashed in.
The problem with iPlayer for Android was that it was released only after a lot of complaints from the community at large about them only supporting the iThings. BBC were not really wanting to make it but cobbled something together just to shut people up.
Quick edit: Hit the settings button and drop the quality to low in iPlayer seems to play the same as in Browser. Not ideal I know, looking at it more closely it seems to be a buffering issue as you get a few smooth seconds and then it all grinds to a halt.
Multilanguage support
Hi kinterinho
I have been looking into and reading up on how Android handles multiple languages and it looks like it not something easy to do as it's not a case of adding files but adding stuff into the files and given the differences between roms especially 2.2 and 2.3 ones I imagine a cut'n'paste job wont do it.
However I have the beginnings of an idea, it needs some work combined with a recent opportunity that has come my way so I can't promise anything but watch this space.
Thanks you!
