Im excited that it will support widgets.

Sounds cool, we jus gotta wait like 10 years for it to be released

REPOST> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503739

cant waittt im excited ive been waiting 4 this update

Can't wait for all the awesome widgets that will come from this. That was one of the main areas lacking in the builds so far.

How long have we been waiting for this update? Since January 15th?
I guess Google is going to keep teasing us with rumored release dates, release details and screenshots until we wake up one morning to see our phones with an update available. So many noobs will be in a hurry to install it and come crying "I lost my root!"
I see only problems ahead with this. Still... I've bene playing with Haykuro's builds and thus far... I like it. But I don't think that I'll use it until Google releases the official version. But who knows... Haykuro (a 17 year old kid) is starting to make Google look bad.
I say we all thank him by donating his way to MIT!

What update... im already Up to Date... lmao ... check the sig

Haykuro's ROMs are pretty freakin stable. I updated yesterday to 5.0.1G and can honestly say my phone is faster and more stable than it ever has before(even when it had the stock ROM). The only thing I've found that doesn't work is the IM app but then it has the gchat app separate(which does work) and you can always dl Hi AIM, Hi MSN, etc for the others.

I think Google had to release that, after all, there is a 17 year old high school student who made two versions run on the G1, and also customized them by adding a few things from other versions, as well as apps to SD!
I really can't believe that it's a coincidence that they released the beta a day after Haykuro got the most stable versions working!
I expect it will be coming as an official update very soon, or Google is going to look very bad!
Unless I have a huge problem, I'm sticking with Haykuro!

Well now that its official i can say what I've wanted to say for weeks, why on earth are there so many people getting all excited about Haykuro's build? Seems like a total waste of time and space to me now that the real thing is coming and will actually work without flaws. I will wait for JF version. Copy and paste will be sweet!!!

Haykuro's build(at least the 5.0.1G with apps to sd) works beautifully... The only thing I've found that doesn't work better than my phone has ever worked before is the IM app. But that's useless for me since the Gtalk app does work(again, beautifully) and I use Hi AIM and Hi MSN for those services. I have found no flaws that are any more significant than I've had in the JF versions and everything works MUCH better.

Haykuro's builds are indeed awesome and extremely impressive but they're not without their key flaws. A lot of my favourite apps don't function properly or work at all on these builds and the autorotate was so slow I had to turn it off. I still think I'd prefer to stick with 5.0G for now than to switch back to JF 1.42.
I definitely recommend 5.0G for someone looking for the best cupcake experience with root - I definitely wouldn't hold my breath for the OTA release + modded rom with root, it could be awhile and Haykuro's builds are stable enough now (and getting more stable every few days with frequent updates).

You DO realize that the apps that don't work is because they were designed for 1.1 and not 1.5 right? It is no fault of Haykuro's ROMS as they wouldn't work on Google's release either. It's up to the Devs to make them compatible and with the new SDK they can!
Copy and Paste works great in Haykuro's builds: Menu > More > Select Text.

I don't think Google were rushed into anything. The simple fact of the matter is that they are not ready to release yet. I'm running Haykuro's 5.0.1G and I think it works really well, and is pretty much close to production quality, but the point is it isn't yet. Bear in mind it based off of Google and HTCs own builds for the Magic, which it still yet to be released. I'm sure the Magic hardware has been locked down for some months now, so it is the software stack they are waiting on.
The fact that Haykuro has got it out and working for the G1 is a tremendous testament to his skills, and to those who've given him assistance, but it is still based on an unfinished product. At some point, there will be a code freeze and the Magic will be released, and I'd expect to see the official Cupcake build shortly after then. Of course, by the time T-Mobile gets it's hands on to it, they'll probably nerf it into uselessness anyway, so there will still be a need for the Haykuro's/JFs of the community!

Dave

Actually, this does make me rather angry. When the G1 was released with p*ss poor Bluetooth support, one of the reasons they gave is that they they had it all working, but they weren't happy with the API and didn't want to "lock it down" as they would have to support this going forward so as not to break any applications developed for the released version of Android in any future revisions.
Now we are seeing new Android versions, and apps are breaking on these versions. I can only assume this is mostly down to changes in the Android APIs.

Dave

com'on man have some patience, or update your phone with haykuro's builds. Look at the fact that what Android 1.5 has it took 2 years for apple to put in iPhone and android 1,5 will be there before iPhone OS 3.0. Palm is still working on stuff we already have.
Android 1 to 1.5 is the fastest development lifecycle we've ever seen. We knew about 1.5( a.k.a cupcake ) because of the fact that Android is opensource and all the world knows whats going on. its not a closed door development scenario like every other major mobile OS.
Just rejoice these facts and feel happy that you have an android phone.

Well, im really glad to finally hear something from google about the Cupcake update. Im currently using the JF 1.42 MOD and its really cool very stable and no issues, and I wouldnt move to the official Cupcake until JF releases his update bcoz I dont want to loose Multi-Touch
Not that its very useful.......but its a nice show off , and gives iphone owners no edge or any other cool features over my lovely G1 ))

Meet the Developer - Ep 1 : Jörg Michel - Part 1
We had to chance to chat with Jörg Michel the developer of apps like G-Alarm, G-Profile, G-Invaders and more. Jörg has created some great apps with beautiful UI that is finger friendly too. You can find all his apps at his website http://ageye.de. I want to thank you for taking the time to chat with us here at 1800PocketPC.com. Well lets get in to it…
Tell us a bit about yourself
First of all: Hello to everyone who takes the time to read about my thoughts… It may not be worth it so please don’t blame me

My name is Jörg Michel, I’m currently living in Ulm/Germany but have grown up in the near of Oettingen/Bavaria where the good beer comes from (I really like it). I’m 24 years old and I’m currently studying medicine in my 10th of 12 terms.
Tell us a bit about your apps ?
My first apps were the games Caver and G-Invaders… Nothing much to say about them. These are very basic and poorly designed games with an online high score feature which is probably the best of it
G-Alarm is an alarm clock which has probably more features than any other alarm tool and is also one of the most reliable clocks. It still has some problems on old devices which quickly run out of memory but I’m currently developing a new graphic engine which hopefully improves the memory usage.
G-Watch should combine three different aims: a stopwatch, a countdown timer and a GPS tracking function. Of course you don’t need a GPS device or have to use the stopwatch if you just want to have a countdown timer in the kitchen.
G-Light can help you to decrease battery consumption by dimming the backlight according to the ambient light. Of course you need a supported device which owns a light sensor (HTC Diamond, Touch Pro, etc.)
G-Profile is my newest tool which can manage your device (e.g. set the volume and ring tones, turn on/off phone radio, wifi, or bluetooth, and so on) according to your needs. It can activate the profiles by time, when an appointment occurs, when you connect something to your device (e.g. headset, ac power), when your phone is in a specified cell and so on…
How did everything start?
Well, everything started by getting my new HTC Diamond some months ago (I think it was June 2008) and looking for some tweaks and new software for it on xda-developers.com because I was disappointed by the performance and look&feel of the ROM (1.34?). I stumbled upon the sensor API of Koushik Dutta who is by the way one of the most important guys for Windows Mobile programming - he brought the access to the sensors which opened the doors for so many tools.
I remembered playing the game “Cave Run” lots of years ago on my Palm and I thought about extending the great accelerometer example of Koush to a “Cave Run” clone without even knowing how to program in C# or .NET Compact Framework…
As you may know I succeeded and Caver got soon playable. Afterwards I had lots of ideas for new games and G-Invaders was born.
After some weeks I thought of doing some serious stuff and started to develop G-Alarm because I was so disappointed by the Windows alarm clock and also a heavy sleeper…
It started really bad, lots of bugs (I just think of the severe bug where G-Alarm didn’t stop at the time change because of daylight saving) but it soon grew and now I’m pretty proud of it .
Whats WM device do you own and use?
I own an old HTC Prophet which I don’t use anymore and my HTC Diamond.
What sites do you usually hangout on?
My first site for PocketPC related topics was xda-dev and I still think it is a very good source for every owner of a PocketPC. But I really like other sites as PPC-Geeks as well and also write on the German forum www.handy-faq.de. And of course there is 1800PocketPC.com
How can we contact you ? ( twitter, facebook, etc )
I don’t twitter, facebook, myspace or whatever. I still don’t think that everything which is in the internet and gets widely used is a good invention - but that’s my own opinion…
You can contact me on my page (www.ageye.de), my forum or blog.
Are you going to list your apps on the WM MarketPlace ?
To be honest, I haven’t heard much about the new WM MarketPlace yet… Is it already available? If so, where can I access it?
If the conditions are good I will list my apps on it - for free, of course…
What are your thoughts on WM MarketPlace ?
As I said, I’m not an expert for MarketPlace related things but I’m not sure what to think about it, yet…
First of all: I don’t like Apple and its products. I think they have a bigger monopoly in many sections than Microsoft ever had but will never get accused. I think it is a cheek to sell music player at a really high charge without shipping the software or even an AC adapter. If Microsoft would only allow to play .wma files on Windows they would have to pay - Apple may force you without consequences to not use .wma files on their iPods…
As you can see I’m not a big fan of Apple, but the iPhone has brought some good and fresh ideas to the mobile world and I also like the idea to access the latest software on a marketplace.
I’m just curious if some big Windows Mobile software development companies can buy better search positions when you try to find e.g. an alarm clock. Microsoft would be stupid to list e.g. G-Alarm on the first place which is free when it could earn a commission for helping to sell commercial software.
So I’m looking forward on how it’s going to work. Hopefully my tools have a chance…
Any plans to expand to other platform like Android , iPhone ?
As you can read and see in my blog I’m currently working on a graphical interface which is completely independent of Windows Mobile’s controls and I have it nearly finished.
I don’t know how the mobile world will look like in a few years but I’m prepared to port my software to other platforms.
Meet the Developer - Ep 1 : Jörg Michel - Part 2
We know this is an ongoing project but how long did it take from the drawing board to your initial release of G-alarm ? What was your motivation to develop it ?
The main benefit for me (which may be a curse for the users) is the fact that I share my new tools and features immediately with the users. Of course there have occurred a lots of bugs but because of the great community helping me to find them and proposing new ideas especially G-Alarm could grow like hell.
So it takes only a few days from the idea to the first public release.
My motivation:
1. The built-in alarm clock didn’t satisfy me
2. I had a lot of time
3. I got really angry when trying to find a good alarm clock. There are so many software companies which just publish crap for a lots of dollars. There are only a few which create high quality, good looking and finger friendly tools (the number increases, thanks to the competitors). Besides the fact that I needed the help of the community, teasing other commercial software developers was a big argument for me to keep the software free
What are the future plan for your apps ?
I’ll release G-Watch 0.6 in the next few days which already uses my new graphical “engine”. Afterward I’ll create a new tool called G-Center (I’m not really happy with the name) which covers all installed ageye-tools (incl. export/import settings function) and maybe also be a customizable start center other apps as well.
After that I’ll probably come back to G-Profile or to G-Alarm. G-Profile definitely needs some new options (the so called “advanced profiles”) and G-Alarm needs the new engine…
What are some of your favorite apps ?
I’m using S2U2 and HomeScreen++ which also demonstrate that freeware may be better than any commercial tool. The Opera browser receives my biggest respect. It brought a quantum jump to Windows Mobile.
New WM devices have some amazing hardware like accelerometer which you have used very well in G-Alarm, its said Touch Pro 2 has a proximity sensor are you cooking up some ideas to exploit these ?
I think it’s a very good idea to have a proximity sensor. HTC’s approach with the light sensor to recognize when you have your phone put at your ear to turn off the backlight is somehow ridiculous…
I don’t have any ideas yet what to do with the proximity sensor - first of all I would need such a phone and users with ideas
When you consider the number of lines of code, which of your app is rated the highest and which one is the lowest?
Of course, I’m proud of G-Alarm. My download counter reached 450.000 downloads within about 6 months which is soooo awesome (of course you have to substract partial downloads, etc.).
The development of G-Alarm has driven me crazy a lot of times - Windows Mobile is such a ungrateful operating system (thanks to all the different vendors with their different opinions on how to customize Windows Mobile).
But now I’ll hope that especially G-Watch and G-Profile catch up… G-Light is somehow my stepchild. The idea has a great potential but I somehow lost the interest in it…
Did you create all the graphics yourself or did someone help you with the look-and-feel of your application?
I’m a poor designer… a very poor designer… Daniel Bergmann (aka expo7) does all the graphics for me! He is a really great designer who creates so professional graphics that I could take a bow in front of him every single day…
A tip for everyone who is interested in programming for Windows Mobile:
I develop my tools with C# using .NET Compact Framework and some native C++ - I haven’t bought a book to learn it. All you need is an idea for a project, a good sample on how your desired language works (for me it was the sensor API of Koush) and time to try a lot of code until it works as it should. It is really easy! If you have an idea, try it!
It was great chatting with you Jörg, good luck with your studies and the WM development. Looking fwd for the new G-Watch and G-Center. May be some of our readers can suggest an alternate name for G-Center.. G-Pack ???? G-Alarm is definitely one of the best WM software out there and I am sure I am not the only one who thinks so.
blocked for future use
nice website!
Meet the Developer - Ep 2 : Alfonso Presa - Part 1
Today we chat to Alfonso Presa who has given us some great apps like ThrottleLauncher, ThrottleLock, etc. People who are in to customizing the look and feel of Windows Mobile would have definitely come across ThrottleLauncher. You can find all his apps on his website : throttlelauncher.com. Thanks for chatting with us mate.
Tell us a bit about yourself ?
I’m Alfonso Presa (aka. APBilbo) from Madrid, Spain. I’m 27 years old and I work on IT. Currently I’m on a project in a multinational bank working on web development over Fatwire.
Tell us a bit about Throttle Apps?
To be honest I never intended to start a “big” project like ThrottleApps… It most of happened on the run . It all started one day when I was trying to customize my Herald (around December 2007)… I was searching for the perfect freeware UI and I realized that there where lot’s of great apps out there but none of them was complete. rltoday was customizable but very hardly and themes where fixed to the point that you have to change the files to suit it to your needs, MortButtons was a perfect launcher but it was fixed to some buttons in a grid layout, the cube was very cool but very limited in space (only 9 contacts, only 9 apps, etc), HTC Home was good but functionality was fixed. I thought, hey I just want a simple kinetic scrolling row of icons… what a good chance to learn C#! Then I released a proof of concept app on XDA and people started asking for clocks, registry info, etc… An that’s how ThrottleLauncher was born .
About ThrottleLock, I seen someone’s post at XDA asking if it was possible to make something like the Android lock for Windows Mobile… I though… “Hey! that can be funny!!”… and there it is!
What mobile devices do you own and use?
All ThrottleApps where developed for my “little” Herald but I got an Omnia i900 recently. I always test my apps on both of them.
How can we contact you ? ( twitter, facebook, etc )
I’m not a fan of IM applications or social networks… I prefer forums and email
(I feel I’m starting to get old… I’m sticked in the old technology). I’ve a facebook account though , but I just check it from time to time. You can always find me at my web’s forum…
Are you going to list your Apps on the WM MarketPlace ?
I will have to see which conditions does Microsoft offer in order to get your app listed. I don’t like how microsoft handle homebrew developments… if you want your software to be distributed without the user to get a warning about unknown software provided you have to send your app and pass through “Microsoft’s controls”… If that’s a precondition to get my apps published there I will definitely not do it…
What are your thoughts on WM MarketPlace ?
From the user’s point of view I think it’s a great idea to have a software catalog where you can access and download with just one click (just like linux systems has the apt catalog). Though I think this can kill the new developers creativity and will give Microsoft the complete control over WM software… If they don’t like it or if it’s against their policy they can remove it and no one will ever known of it’s existence… May be I’m a little bit paranoid here :-D.
Any plans to expand to other platform like Android , iPhone ?
Some time ago I started porting ThrottleLauncher to Android platform but I didn’t have too much time for it and that project is currently abandoned… Any way I like developing mobile apps and I don’t discard developing for those platforms someday if ever I get a device to test on . May be when 1.0 arrives… who knows .
How many hrs a week do you spend on WM development ?
Depends on the week… but it may be arround 20/30 hours… I also have to provide support and documentation for the apps ;-).
How many hours have you put into ThrottleLauncher ?
Many many more than my girlfriend would have liked . It has been about a year and a half of work so I guess it may be arround 1200 hours.
Meet the Developer - Ep 2 : Alfonso Presa - Part 2
You have made customization and skinning of your apps a high priority, how has the user response been ?
To be honest I expected more interest on my app from theme designers as ThrottleLauncher currently is capable of almost anything… though the lack of themes may also be my fault as there’s not too much documentation for ThrottleLauncher’s theme development. I’m working hard this days to write some tutorials that are available from my web. My target is to make ThrottleLauncher the first choice for theme designers when they have an idea… Then users will hopefully understand how powerfull ThrottleLauncher is ;-). At this point I have to say that there are many great designers (like Rumball, Paul de Groot, Zoltair Wright, m.schmidler, blazingwolf and much more) that have helped me to turn ThrottleLauncher in what it is and are working to make it the best UI ever .
ThrottleStorage is a unique application , how was the user response to that ?
I think ThrottleStorage is a great tool that provides a functionality that Windows Mobile definitely lacks, specially with the small internal memory that devices currently have. As an app it’s not so appealing as ThrottleLauncher or ThrottleLock and users will use it when they need it. I think it’s a great tool for ROM cookers to include on their ROM’s.
What are some of your favorite apps ?
If I’ve to choose one, it will be TaskMgr without any doubt. None of my apps would have been possible without this little handy tool. Definitely a must have for every developer. Other apps I really like are MostScripts, S2U2 (but I use ThrottleLock… sorry a_C
), S2P and TouchCal.
What are your favorite development tools and Language?
For WM I use C# and C++ over VS2005 and I really like how flexible and simple things can become by using that app and that languages, though…. I think the most powerful and flexible language is Java (I use to develop using Eclipse platform). Also CVS/SVN is a must have in order to develop applications.
New WM devices come with better hardware like accelerometer , proximity sensor, etc are you cooking up some ideas to exploit these ?
ThrottleLauncher currently has support for accelerometer . I plan to release some updates of the themes that will allow users to choose this as an option so they can scroll rows just by changing the orientation of their devices. Note that this support is still experimental…
Have you worked on any commercial apps ?
No I’ve not .
The new version of ThrottleLauncher has a skin to mimic the iPhone, Android, Palm Pre and WM7 did you develop these yourself ?
I’m not a good designer so most of the graphics used on the themes are provided by other people. WM7 theme was almost 100% developed by Paul de Groot and I only made some tweaks over it. For the Palm Pre I’ve only made the layout as the icons where provided by Cpeacha. Android was enterily designed by me… but it doesn’t have too much built in graphics . iPhone icons where taken for several places arround XDA, the base of that theme was initially dones by Gullum and continued by Blazingwolf.
Throttle Launcher has grown to a fantastic UI for Windows Mobile users and is close to version 1.0 , what can we expect in the future?
I’m starting to work on a PC .NET application that will allow users to visually create themes for ThrottleLauncher. This way designers will find a lot more easy to implement their creation in ThrottleLauncher. Also I have to make some experiments on 3d effects by using the gsensor. Probably ThrottleLock will be the first to use this feature.
Fantastic, the PC application is sure to be a hit and with the documentation on skinning on the way I am sure more people will be creating new and exciting skins for your apps. ThrottleLauncher has definitely come a long way from when it was first released, congrats on that and good luck with the apps in the future. Once again thanks for chatting to us @ 1800PocketPC.com

+ Relaxed POP3 parser rules so it works with non-compliant email servers.
+ Password quoting bugs in IMAP. Makes it work for users with funny chars in their password (e.g. spaces).
+ Various sources of errors in auto & manual account setup.
+ Improvements on how we report various connection errors. Makes it much easier for user to diagnose failed account setups.
+ New-mail notifications for POP3 accounts.
+ Properly recover from POP3 connection failures, so that the next connection has a chance of working properly.
+ Remove automatic accounts setup entries that were broken or not testable. Minor fixes to a few of the remaining entries. Improvements to warning dialogs used for a few special cases.
+ New accounts are now set to check every 15 minutes (instead of defaulting to "never").
+ Fixed a bug causing approximately 1 in 25 outbound messages to freeze up the IMAP connection (to a Gmail based server) when transferred to the Sent folder. This broke the entire connection so new messages could not be downloaded either.
+ Unit test framework so Email can be extended & tested more reliably.
+ Fix IMAP manually-created accounts so message delete works properly.
* Alarm Clock
o Significant bug fixes
+ Alert now plays audio/vibe directly, rather than through AlarmManager. AlarmClock alert starts playing audio/vibe in its IntentReceiver, rather than on activity start. These changes should prevent alarms from being blocked by modal dialogs.
* Package Installer
o Significant bug fixes
+ Bugs related to replacing existing applications.
* Settings
o New features
+ New menu option to list running processes in Settings->ManageApplications.
* Music
o New features
+ Music playback fades in after suspending for phone call.
+ New media search intent allows for 3rd party apps to launch or respond to media searches based on artist, album, or title.
Affects: Music Player, YouTube, Browser applications.
* Browser
o New features
+ Updated WebKit browser core, synced with Nov 2008 WebKit version.
+ Support for new, optimized JavaScript engine (SquirrelFish).
+ Copy / paste is enabled in the browser. To copy with touch, press and hold the shift key and select the text. Releasing the shift key or ending the touch drag copies the text. To copy with the trackball, press and hold the shift key, move the cursor to the selection start, click the trackball, and move the trackball to the extend the selection. Releasing the shift key, or clicking the trackball a second time, copies the text.
+ Find is enabled in the browser. To find text, choose it from the menu and type the text to find.
+ Drawing has been sped up substantially by supporting partial content invalidates and partial screen invalidates. Pages with animations are 5x faster.
* VoiceDialer
o New features
+ VoiceDialer supports 'open app' command
* Camera/Gallery
o New features
+ Video recorder mode
+ Share intent for videos
+ Video thumbnails
+ Local file playback
Download manager
* New features
o Support for HTTP codes 301, 302, 303 and 307 (redirects).
o HTTP code 503 is now handled, with support for retry-after in delay-seconds.
o Downloads that were cleanly interrupted are now resumed instead of failing.
o Applications can now pause their downloads.
o Retry delays are now randomized.
o Connectivity is now checked on all interfaces.
o Downloads with invalid characters in file name can now be saved.
Framework
* New features
o Support of touch events in WebView.
o New JavaScript engine (SquirrelFish) in WebView.
o Input method framework, for soft keyboards and other on-screen input methods. Includes new APIs for applications to interact with input methods, and the ability for third party developers to write their own input methods.
o Access to the raw audio data for playback and recording from application code.
o New PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT option.
o Support for top-level boolean resources.
o Tactile feedback to the LockPatternView. Tactile feedback can be enabled/disabled by going to Settings > Security & location and then checking/unchecking "Use tactile feedback". Note that this can be used independently of the visual feedback of the lines ("Use visible pattern"). Thus it gives users a middle ground between showing the lines on the screen and having no feedback at all.
o PackageManager changes to support un-installation of partially installed applications. Added new flag PackageManager.GET_UNINSTALLED_PACKAGES to include partially installed apps in all relevant PackageManager api's. ManageApplications screen now lists such partially installed apps and the user can uninstall these applications completely.
o Support third party updates of system applications. New menu options in Settings->ManageApplications to list updated system applications.
o Framework support to list current running processes. New API in ActivityManager.
o Framework feature to declare required configurations by applications. New manifest attribute uses-configuration in android manifest.
o Hardware accelerated video encode (video recorder) in opencore.
o Simplified SREC speech recognition API available.
o Streaming audio I/O for applications.
* Significant bug fixes
o Fixed issues with saving state in the view hierarchy, so that you can properly subclass from something like TextView and create your own state that inherits from that provided by TextView.
o TextView now implements onKeyMultiple(), so that flinging the trackball will result in accelerated scrolling. This required some changes to movement methods, and included some improvements to the acceleration computed when flinging.
o Framework bug fixes in PackageManager to share/un-share permissions for applications with shared uid's.
o Significant rework of Settings->ManageApplications Performance and UI enhancements.
o A number of settings in android.provider.Settings.System were moved to android.provider.Settings.Secure. Only system software can modify these settings. Additionally, a new permission, WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS, is required to access these settings. The old constants in Settings.System have been deprecated. It is possible to read settings values via Settings.System using the deprecated constants. However, attempts to modify these settings via Settings.System will result in a log message and the setting value will be left unchanged.
o Many bug fixes in the media framework
Bluetooth
* New features
o Support for A2DP & AVRCP profiles.
* Significant bug fixes
o First connection after pairing always fails on many carkits.
o Mini Cooper and some late model BMW cars fail to use Bluetooth or take 2 minutes for Phone Book transfer.
System software
* New features
o New kernel based on Linux 2.6.27.
o Improvements to the wakelock API.
o Work to transition to the USB Gadget Framework underway.
o Basic x86 support.
Radio & Telephony
* New features
o SIM Application Toolkit 1.0.
o Green CALL button is no longer a shortcut for "add a new call". This has been a rarely used feature and confusing if triggered accidentally.
o Longer in-call screen timeout when using the speakerphone.
o "Show dialpad" / "Hide dialpad" item added to the in-call menu, to make it easier to discover the DTMF dialpad.
* Significant bug fixes
o An obscure case where the Phone UI could cause the device to not go to sleep on its own. This would happen if user bails out of the in-call screen by hitting HOME, followed by the call disconnecting remotely.
o Don't allow a single tap to open the in-call dialpad. It is now required to touch and drag it. This makes it much harder to accidentally open the dialpad by touching the screen with your face.
Build System
* New features
o The functions in build/envsetup.sh should be much more useful
wait, this sounds great? but what are the implications really?
i know one of the big worries I had regarding this was support for previous applications, etc. It sounds like by the comments at the beginning about preserving all previous commits, full backwards compatibility won't be an issue.
Sounds good. Just push it to my G1!!!!
Bluetooth
* New features
o Support for A2DP & AVRCP profiles
like this feature can bluetooth with a2dp
you know that merged it a few months back right?
i was about to say, what kind of deja voo is going on here.
"Work to transition to the USB Gadget Framework underway"
means there is possibility of android having support for usb peripherals. that would be amazing..
Yeah, but apparently Google has transformed into just a couple of people.

They are the only ones bringing us cupcake right now.

That isn't cupcake. It is a closed source side branch from HTC.
And last I checked the merge wasn't 100% complete. Yes the started the merge and the major part is finished but small portions still need to be merged for bug fixes.
I know you guys think its old news, but i just did a repo sync and its grabbing a HUGE amount of updates/merges (i had updated yesterday so this is def new stuff). Be interesting to see if its buildable and the differences can be see.

BTW anyone seen this http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html
There was a recent merge but I think your changelog lists the old changes, not the new ones. FYI using master is probably not a good idea -- if you want to put stuff on devices, you should stick to cupcake, not master.
See: http://groups.google.com/group/android-platform/msg/0eeae1b3113b8f43
I can't wait till these updates are rolled to us consumers.
this is not pointed at the OP, but more the Android, Goog & the T-Mob Powers that be.

Its about time this was to be added in RC33, this is required by some EURO carriers, from what Ive read.

THANK GOD, everybody who calls me will thank you...
Id also like to see 1 click of the red button "while in-call" would put the screen to sleep and a "double tap" hangs up.
I can't count how many times I tried to get around the face problem by turning the screen off while "in CALL" by pushing the red button and hanging up on my caller, my suggestion is just one of many that could fix the problem.
the updates should come out faster rather than waiting on these mega jumps in the codebase, why not update less stuff more frequently, put out whats ready when 3 or 10 fixes and/or added features are ready to go, not wait months to get a huge laundry list.
I also hope the hard work from here, is getting into the RCs and credited, xda has done more for my G1 at this point than "the trifecta" aka ANDROGooGMobile, I say send tmobile and their toys, home, they are messing up the whole party...
just a rant, sorry if I offended anybody,

June 19, 2009 - Phoenix III: Improving Upon The Best-- SCREENS UP

Phoenix III
"Improving upon the best."
Introduction:
Phoenix has a long-standing reputation of being one of the finest Business-Class ROMs for the HTC Kaiser, while never lacking features for those who need a bit of entertainment. It's been a while since the release of Phoenix II, but we promised you that the wait would be worth it. After months of planning and building a ROM based on user contributions and desires mentioned over at the state-of-the-art Phoenix Development Center, we are proud to present Phoenix III.
Built upon Windows Mobile 6.5, Phoenix III is the fastest Phoenix ROM ever and argubly the most stable. Phoenix is designed by business users, but not just for business users. You will find that, as with every Phoenix version, that we have released a product that can be used on a daily basis very comfortably, and we promise that you'll never want to re-flash again (except to new versions) and if you don't agree, tell us on PDC and we'll make it right to the best of our abilties.
Conditions:
Phoenix III has been an experiment in collaboration, so far to some pretty good results. If you download Phoenix III, we want you to contribute at the Phoenix Development Center. We will not force you to register to download the ROM itself, but any and all bugfix patches will be released ONLY at PDC.
Please, once you register, contribute, by telling us what you would like to see in future versions.

Hi,
I am uploading 3.1...It has the NeoS2007_Driver_Pack_Beta_1 openvg drivers built in. It does NOT have opera since opera is only working right now if installed by a cab file which you can find on pdc.

Congrats
congrats for ANOTHER wonderful rom brothers, im downloading the new release now you guys are great.
heres a theme
Just a suggestion but how about a link over on the PHX 2 thread to help get people here?? Just so they don't have to search through all the other threads in the KRD forum.
Any Screen shots?
Congratulations with the development of Phoenix III. Will you be adding any screen shots of this great ROM soon?
Thanks for all your hard work Dev team.
I just had to log on and say that my first impression of this rom is just amazing. I loved the P II rom but it was sluggish and ran choppy for me. This rom is awesome. Thank you for all of your hard work. I will buy you coffee/beer when I can.
sorry if this is a dumb question but whats stock first?
just a follow up: ive been flashing for about a year and had no idea about doing this.
It's actually an old Hermes trick and actually doesn't really apply to the Kaiser in theory. But we've found that for some odd reason, if you flash the stock ROM first, it seems to help prevent a bad flash with some of these high up build numbers. It could be a placebo effect though.
It worked on the hermes because Hermes was formatted differently.

Means to flash the "stock att/htc" ROM first (it's on the same post on PDC). This ensures that EVERYTHING is cleaned out from other cooked ROMs and provides an stable/consistent based to install the new ROM over. While it's not completely necessary every time we are asking everyone to do it this time that way we can be sure that any bugs are legit and not leftovers from some other ROM (and yes, we've already seen this from people that have NOT flashed the stock...).
So please EVERYONE take the whole 3 min it takes and flash the stock ROM first. Thank You.
Downloading. I hope to see the OpenGL driver with this extension to smooth out the graphics. I cant remember the name off hand but it does amazing thing. Its found in Mbarvians 3.1 Solace ROM.
There's some kind of OpenGL thingymabob that KZI posted at PDC in the addons section for use with the latest opera, grab that, if that's not what you're referring to.

New version of Op sounds pretty sweet too, try it out.
After flashing this last night I've had my File system go bad twice. I thought it had done in my sd card, but upon reflash sd was fine. I don't really know what to make of that, but when i try to lauch programs it will often say somthing about certificates. It won't sync and when i did get to look at the file tree it was all messed up. When i reflashed my sd card was fine, but icontacts refused to see anything.
I did not flash stock, but i never do and i've flashed most of the roms josh has made.
Cabs: openVG addon for opera, opera 9.7 (hells yes), tilt keyboard fix, google maps, and keyboard speed increase.
Any ideas? I loved the rom, but it's crapped out on me twice in a day...
do a stock flash, then a re-d/l and reflash, let it customize, and hard-reset. then tell us if you still have issues.
Like your ROM, but recently I could not open your homepage recently, also could not download your ROM by 4share and media link. I am in China, is there any problem?
Awesome!!
One issue-
I listen to streaming radio all day- Via this link- (saved in my "notes")
http://clearchannel.kicks-ass.org/cc.php?name=WTAM&url=www.wtam.com
It opens Opera, which triggers windows media- and always played all day without a problem on other roms. Not sure if it's this version of Opera, but now, it connects for about 10 seconds, then Opera pops back up & it stops.
Any ideas? Thanks-

Do NOT add the keyboard speed increase or google maps. Both are already built into the rom. Google maps is the most current version already.

This is not helpful. If you want to post a bug, give us details. What keyboard, soft or hardware? What device, tilt or Kasier?
Come on people--what can I fix if you just say it doesn't work correctly. I am betting you have a tilt and didn't install the tilt keyboard fix so your function keys aren't mapped correctly.....

The Ainol Novo 8 is a great little tablet but has been hampered by some early quality issues and about 4 or 5 firmware revisions that have all been good at something but not everything.
Recently a 2.3.4 beta Rom appeared on the Chinese speaking boards and was a major improvement over the 2.2 releases however as always they were in Chinese as a first language and contained stuff that was no use to us English speaking types. So I decided it was time to apply a bit of magic and make my own Rom. Links at the bottom of the post. This is a direct result of my playing about with the beta firmware then bringing it all together.

About This Firmware:
--------------------
After much frustration having to de-Chinese every firmware for this amazing little tablet I set about making an English one to save time and to learn a bit more about Android, while doing so I also added in the main Google apps that everyone wants but always has trouble getting to behave. Using the current 2.3.4 beta as a base I removed, replaced and added various things to give us a decent firmware that will make you proud to show off your tablet with the unfortunate brand name. (Hands up all those who have had a schoolboy snicker when telling someone who makes it)
While I take credit for the putting everything together in one easy to use package the real credit should goto all those people I sourced the component parts from. Enjoy the firmware
Changelog:
----------

Tidied and formatted readme.txt.
6/11/2011:
Minor update to correct bug in build.prop preventing Chianfire and Tegra games from working.
5/11/2011:
1st Release.
Sources:

http://tinyurl.com/64xhw3y I used the Browser and Google Music from this one. (Translated)
http://tinyurl.com/29c6jlx The rom I currently use on my HD2 which I lifted most of the Google stuff from.

Other various sources for stuff about some of the other little tweaks.
Installation:
-------------
Flashing this is a breeze, simply copy the contents of the zip to your SD Card, insert into your Novo 8 and boot into Recovery with Power & Vol+.
Once booted perform the 3 wipes and then install the update and reboot. That's it, no need to install the AC3/DTS license or add Google apps.
If you spot the error about the factory_*blahblahblah*.aml file missing when booting into recovery mode just ignore it. I dumped the automated stuff as it bricked my unit the first time round when flashing the stock beta and I had to do a recovery with the original firmware release. All the automated bit really does is perform the 3 wipes and perform the install so why risk it when it takes only a few seconds to do.
When first booting the homescreen will go black/blank for about a minute. Don't panic this is quite normal it's just everything unpacking and setting up. Set up your wifi, add your Google account and off you go.
Features:
---------
- AC3/DTS Hardware Decoder works.
- Fast and Smooth 160dpi rom with build.prop tweaks to improve battery life and speed things up.
- 3G Modem support is present and has been confirmed working with these dongles . . .
Huawei E160 3G USB Dongle (ompudsman @ MP4Nations)
Huawei E1750 3G USB Dongle with Virgin UK sim. (GFZ @ XDA)
- Full English Rom set to UK region, no hidden Chinese menus to pop out at you. All Chinese only apps removed or replaced with english versions.
- Latest Market 3.3.11 with heavily modified build.prop to show as many apps as possible. This does actually show and install a far wider range of apps than before.
- Uses the free version of LauncherPro because it does seem the best for this Tablet, the Chinese firmwares seemed to have hard coded Chinese in the LauncherProPlus.apk The market will allow you to purchase the Plus Unlocker if you want those features.
- Preloaded with Google Browser, Gmail, Maps, Streetview, YouTube, Google Music, Latitude, Google Search, Calendar and Car Home.
- Google accounts will sync Contacts, Mail and Calendars correctly.
- YouTube plays HQ videos just fine without stutter or lag. (Assuming you have a good wifi signal)
- The stock video player plays most MPG, MP4, MKV files with AAC, MP3, AC3 audio. Plays 1080p quite happily as well if the storage device can keep up.
If you need wider format support but still with hardware decoding where possible get MX Video Player and the ARMv7 Codecs from the market.
- Most of the Games and Apps I have tried while testing work fine. Get Chainfire3D and buy the Pro key to enjoy some of the nice Tegra Games. Check my blog for compatibility of Tegra games.
- Wifi seems better under the new firmware.
Bugs: (Most of these have been documented as an issue with the base firmware)
-----
- Tablet likes to wake itself up now and then for no real reason. (Possible data connections causing it to wake)
- Sometimes the Power button does not work so you can't turn off the screen or power off. Install Quick Reboot off the market or hit the reset button.
- If the Screen is off and the Power button is not behaving another key will turn it on.
- Sometimes the Power Off dialog appears for no reason. Oddly not when in full screen games so far as I've noticed.
- Your Novo may disappear off the Market site for a while or completely. Mine went and then came back about a day later,
this is down to the modified build.prop. You can still download apps directly through the Market app on the Novo regardless.
- Some of the best apps are still not available in the market, Dolphin Browser HD, Facebook and Friendcaster to name a few. This is down to Google Market and not much seems to beat this last hurdle.
- Possible others (Let me know by posting on my blog or threads)
Disclaimer:
-----------
As with any custom firmware there is a risk of things going wrong so if it bricks your unit try a recovery image from Ainol and start again, if you are of a nervous disposition or the type of person who sues for a hobby please do not attempt to install this. The rom works fine on my unit and others have tried without issue, however mileage does seem to vary with this tablet.

Thank you!
Hi Oberth,
Thank you so very much for the hard work and effort to put something together for this fantastic tablet! We have been hoping to see some english rom's being put together for some time but the fact that this is Android 2.3.4 with all the tweaks and best bits of previous rom's is excellent!!
Will be flashing your rom shortly and report back...
update: flashed and so far so good!
- Huawei E1750 3G dongle tested with Virgin UK Sim and all working.
Also will be uploading you rom to our website which may be found in the download section of the Ainol Novo 8 webpage.
(unable to post a link yet as need more posts)
Kind Regards

Thanks for the feedback
I actually bought my tablet from you guys through your ebay shop under the user id thedaybeforetomorrow was most pleased by the service.
Thanks for the offer to mirror and I hope the rom performs as it should, as not everyone can/will download from rapidshare I would like to add the links for your Novo 8 page to my first post here, my mp4nation thread and my blog.
Over at MP4 I have had some feedback regarding the market, while fully functional some have complained of the speed (mainly to do with the markets new design rather than tablet performance) so I am considering for the next release maybe offering both the older 2.xx style market and new 3.x market as separate firmware downloads so people can choose. Both the latest version I have used and the older one seem to see the same amount of apps visible so it's mainly a personal preference.
Just seen your test with the 3G Dongle, going to update here there and everywhere

wow, small world!
thank you for your custom and delighted to hear you are pleased with the service
will be testing further over the next few days, for some reason we did notice that the initial firmware form Ainol played 1080p files flawlessly then slowly playback became worse over following updates although other features/fixes had been implemented.
all mentioned above seem to be as you stated regarding the initial power up and blank screen. can't say we experienced the power button problem yet, works as it should.
the new market is indeed sluggish as with other tablets, a quick search for skype didn't show the main application as most likely with some others that you have mentioned. apart from the sluggish launch, the new market design is not so bad, personally prefer it now being used to it.
Ainol did advise an official firmware was due soon, maybe a mix of that and the firmware's you have worked with will give us an even greater improvement.
loving the honeycomb boot animation!
keep up the great work, will have the firmware link etc added shortly.
The playback issues in the later firmwares linked to the AC3/DTS license not being installed or disabled entirely so playback did get worse.
Can I ask you to re-download the firmware in the first post. I tidied up the readme.txt for readability. nothing else is changed.

sure no problem at all, we have uploaded the firmware to our novo 8 pages download section and provided link to the firmware and to this page at xda.
will download new file and replace the one we have on our server.
thanks again
Thanks for that I have added your page to the links section where ever this is posted and edited my blog to mention where I bought it from.
Can I ask if you could change the name from Oberth to Nebular Nerd on your page, just matches up with the blog then. My user name from here was from years back and I wish you could change it. Part of why I edited the readme was to aka the names

Man, this is great!
Thank´s a lot!
Now I´m happy with my tablet.
Hello from Spain
First of all, congratulations on your work with the tablet Ainola.
I wanted to ask if you know when it will be available in Spanish.
Thanks for everything.

I just checked and Spanish language is not included, maybe something for the next release
Languages included are: English (Australia / Canada / New Zealand / Singapore / UK / United States) & Chinese.
Thanks, I'll try to see how it goes anyway.
But if you can include it in the next version, would be welcome here in Spain.

That would be down to Oberth aka Nebula Nerd but don't believe it would be that hard to do, i'm sure he will let us know
Additional Languages
Hi kinterinho,
I shall have a look into adding additional languages into the firmware and see what that requires. This beta was released with only Chinese and English language files built in but I may be able to borrow some from another rom.
The only thing that might present a problem is if LauncherPro refuses to change all it's options to Spanish in the same way the default Chinese one would not become fully English when you changed the language. I shall have to experiment and see
Cheers for the update, having a few issues.
Iplayer app now apears to suck goats since using this ??
any ideas ?

Hi, I think you will find the BBC iPlayer app has always had issues.
Playback should be fine via the browser, this firmware plays iPlayer via stock browser although previous firmware required dolphin browser hd.

I appreciate you try it. In Spain would do well to include also the Spanish language.
I read on the post to see if there are any changes.
iPlayer is indeed pretty poor.
Yep confirming GFZ's post, it will play with the stock browser set to mobile but quality is pretty poor. I remember it running better on one the original stock roms. It could be one of a few things.
- Bug in the firmware with flash, although Youtube works through the various browsers ok. You can't use the Youtube app for comparison as it's not flash driven.
- Could be a VM Heap issue with it taking up to much space (need to play with that and see)
- Could be the higher dpi on top of the higher res causing the poorly coded app lots of effort in the upscale, dropping to the original 192dpi might cure it at the expense of fuzzy text and icons, again I need to test, not sure if dpi switchers play nice with this rom so you could at least hop between them for different tasks.
- I might try embedding it in the rom as well, The Youtube app hated being added to the tablet post flashing and performance was poor but ran just fine after being flashed in.
The problem with iPlayer for Android was that it was released only after a lot of complaints from the community at large about them only supporting the iThings. BBC were not really wanting to make it but cobbled something together just to shut people up.
Quick edit: Hit the settings button and drop the quality to low in iPlayer seems to play the same as in Browser. Not ideal I know, looking at it more closely it seems to be a buffering issue as you get a few smooth seconds and then it all grinds to a halt.
Multilanguage support
Hi kinterinho
I have been looking into and reading up on how Android handles multiple languages and it looks like it not something easy to do as it's not a case of adding files but adding stuff into the files and given the differences between roms especially 2.2 and 2.3 ones I imagine a cut'n'paste job wont do it.
However I have the beginnings of an idea, it needs some work combined with a recent opportunity that has come my way so I can't promise anything but watch this space.
Thanks you!

Operation "Tuna Balls" (UNOFFICIAL CyanogenMod 9 from source)

Hello,
I have released a very ugly, hacked up dump of my work from July when I attempted to port CyanogenMod 9 to the Nexus Q. It is incomplete, but compiles still, and functional. Developers might find this of use.
There was a large amount of interest in this work when I released a video of 'proof of concept' that went viral in July, before the consumer launch. This work was all created before Google pulled the launch (July), and many weeks before AOSP or OMAP repos had the source for device/vendor.
I call it "Tuna balls" due to the fact it's a raw rip off of the Tuna/Maguro base from CM9, dated July 2012, when I forked and modified it.
The codenames of the branches may be wrong. A lot of the 'bugs' may be easy to fix. Unfortunately, I never came back to this project after July.
As someone who strives for complete, QA process builds, I kept this private for months. I know it's not complete, please understand things don't work flawlessly. No audio (possibly hard to fix) and crashing System UI (probably easy to fix) can ruin your experience, but this can be hacked into shape
* GIT SOURCE *
https://github.com/kornyone/android_device_google_steelhead
https://github.com/kornyone/android_device_tuna_balls
https://github.com/kornyone/vendor_google_steelhead
https://github.com/kornyone/google-kernel-steelhead
Here are my notes/bug list from Github:
"Operation Tuna Balls"
This is a partially complete attempt at porting CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4.0.4) to the Nexus Q.
At the time of original creation (July), there was no other source available. As such, I used the Tuna/Maguro bases to port to the Steelhead, as there were so many common pieces.
This combination worked well for the majority of things. Known bugs never resolved since this project was orphaned in July include:
* No working audio. Mixers fail to load with tuna audio_hw.c. The OMAP "Steelhead" and AOSP "Phantasm" repositiories online have a -very- hacked up version of this file, but intended for Jellybean (as of writing). Also, OMAP has the audio listed as a known issue in their source releases.
* No working NFC. This could be easy to solve, I did not spend much time on it.
* System UI crashes. This should be a simple matter of finding this conflicting Tablet/Phone System UI layouts being requested (should be an overlay setting, likely).
Most everything else works. This includes:
* Bluetooth pair all the things, no hacks needed.
* Wifi works.
* XHDPI resolution works (when System UI doesn't crash).
* HW Acceleration in games work.
* Google Play Market is open for use.
--------------
While I am a maintainer for CyanogenMod, this work is not official in any way. It is incomplete, and I am more or less abandoning it at this point due to a broken Nexus Q and lack of free time. Please hit me up on Freenode (kornyone) for questions, ##nexusq is still open.
Thanks!
Proof of concept (so people don't have to dig this stuff up):

kornyone. I was wondering where you put this. Thanks for the source release, it will come in use. I have a big move coming up but plan to pick up where you left off and maybe get some other devs in on this. Again, thanks for the xmas present!
how hard would this be to run cm 10 on it?
kornyone,
I was able to build and install your cm9!
Of course I have the same issues as you (systemui crashes, no sound) but hey it's something!
Thanks for everything and I hope there is still some progession on this!
