New application: Layar - General Topics

This sounds fun; http://layar.eu/
Right now only available on Google phones.

Yes, interestig program! read it in the newspaper yesterday, however It will probably never work for us, since our x1 hasn't got a compass.:-(

Wouldn't that be possible thru GPS?

GPS can "fake" a compass by comparing the relative position of two data points -- if you move five feet to the east, the GPS can assume you're facing east.
But that won't be enough for an app like this, since a GPS cannot work as a compass accurately if you're standing still and rotating. It would only work if you're willing to walk around in a ~10' circle to change the direction. Probably not an easy sell.

GPS recommendations for walking?

Does anyone here have a pref for any GPS software that is good for walking, mainly for the UK. My car thing works but I have to walk about when I am in Central London because of parking charges.
Anything would be good.

Hi,
Yes Tom Tom is pretty good. Used it alot in Rome on foot last year and never got lost.

Have a look at A to Z or even Memory Map, both of which can be found on this page http://www.a-zmaps.co.uk/?nid=83 (scroll down to the links), dig around on the site to find the free demo downloads to try it out before committing to a purchase, no guidance, but a searchable database of streets and present position shown on the map - Mike
I use googlemaps
needs a 3g connection but works perfect. It was guiding me to headshops in Leeds I never knew existed
anyone have any comments on country recreational walks? UK
I use MemoryMap and Google maps (over gprs it's fine). The maps on MemoryMap (which are expensive) show all public footpaths.... and pubs

Anyone use ALK CoPilot Live 8 on their Topaz?

I'm looking at getting ALK CoPilot Live 8 for my Diamond 2, and wondered if anybody has any information or guidance regarding it. At £25.99 for UK only, £52 for full Europe, it' an absolute bargain...
http://www.trustedreviews.com/car-tech/review/2009/08/17/ALK-CoPilot-Live-8-for-Windows-Mobile/p1
works well
been using it since it was released works really well but has been not update like other OS's and still not traffic
Also been using it since it was released. Works great and can recommend it And at £25.99, it really is a steal.
I got the UK only version.
Good for its price.
A few niggles:
when seaching for a postcode in my local area it displays the wrong town name but on checking the map it has pinpointed it correctly.
When putting in my own postcode (I live in a tiny village - only 1 road) it points me to the centre of the village, not to my house.
The map is very small and also not as clear as the TomTom map display.
The good points:
No lag
No need to do any tweeks

compass needed - richessegps maybe?

Hi guys! Has anyone got a compass to work on the TG01 yet? I've tried for about an hour or more to get richessegps to work but nothing, even with the aid of Franson Gate.
Basically i'm trying to find something that has the Azimuth feature on it. Thinking it could be of use for my dodgy sky dish of all things! LOL
Any assistance, ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Impossible to have a compass application because there is no hardware compass in the Tg01.
What you can do is use the GPS to act as a kind of compass. Check out this
hmmm. So once more as i originally thought... the TG isn't all it was cracked up to be after all then
Cheers for the reply fella. Think the simplest way is to go buy a proper meter for my dish and do the job right

Its a great device for the money if you got it pay as you go in the sale... but it does lack a few things the htc hd2 has, one of them being the hardware compass

Yeah, pitty it doesn't prepare my coffee too. Come on...
The compass feature was introduced just recently in wm phones, i think only hd2 and omnia2 have one. TG01 was out 1 year ago, when only iphone had one, correct me if i'm wrong. Useless in my opinion...

Wrong dude.
Nokia used to have some earliler models with compass in it, (magnetic sensors on side of the phones).
Useless?!?
I think that judging is litle bit tighted.
Why??
Compass installed in phone could be used in various ways. One of those is any kind of outdoors activity, (no need to port specialised and so sofisticated piece of "silva" hardware), but definetly not to be relied on, (even though I'm kind of tech freak, I ratherly use good old proven one fashioned gauge instrumet without batteries when it comes to keep my "b.tt" safe and in track), as any batteries powered instrument could deny cooperation in critical moment.
cheers

Useless? How many times have you launched your navigator app being stopped and the screen show your position facing the wrong side? (or the image rotates as fool...) Because only with an electronic compass included on your device this annoying behaviour can be avoided.
And only with a compass +GPS works the "augmented reality" programs, when you can frame with your camera a real object (a house, a castle, a monument...) and you can see related information on screen merged with the image...
I've googled looking for an blue tooth electronic compass to connect to our device but it seems that this doesn't exist yet.....if anyone know if this exist (or want to be the first in develop it ) please inform!
Regarding Azimuth, richessegps works ok on my TG01 (with Franson GPSGate of course):

App to compinsate for GPS pos err (20-30m)

My GPS is finally working consistently with Serendipity. What I am looking for is an app that would compensate for the 20 to 30 meters south that my gps is off so that it will stop redirecting me. Is there anything like that. I know its a bandaid but better a bandaid than nothing? I can't find anything and I guess I am hoping one of your programming super genius' around here will take up the task. Just a thought on what could possiblely make this GPS better (plumbob and all the other fixes are not working for me)
best bet to get accurate GPS all the time is get yourself a bluetooth GPS receiver. just bought one for $30 off amazon and accurate down to 5ft. with tracking on the spot.
I'm lucky enough to have one but I was just hoping that someone out there might think it super easy to code something like that and see the benefit for himself as well as the rest of us cappy users and undertake the project for ****s and giggles. I know it's wishful thinking but what the hay, had to give it a shot.
Freaking Samsung....maybe its time for the atrix...hell I better check into that one to as companies don't seem to giva fffff about customers anymore, it probably has issues to.
Thanks for listening
Jerry
I know where you are coming from man. I used to have a Nexus One and it has an awesome GPS, locked instantly (under 10 seconds from cold boot) and accurate to 1 metre (3.28 ft).

[Q] [QUESTION] GPS tracker with app development

So hello! Let me first introduce myself.. I'm Haris a.k.a. Bosnyan and I just started with a study called IBMS (International Business and Manegement Studies for the curious ones) and have this project in my first year called Young Entrepreneurship, where I have to start a company with a group of other students and at the end of the year this should be a running company with a profit (hopefully.) So we were brainstorming about what could be a useful product, that hasen't been on the market yet and then I came with the idea of producing a GPS tracker which allows you to track down your bike/scooter, since there are A LOT of them here in the Netherlands. There are obviously challenges that lie with the product, one which is of course the software aspect.
So my questions are:
- Is it possible to find a gps tracker/tag with your smartphone with the proper software/app?
- Is this possible just based on software or is an external reciever nesessary for example?
- How accurate will it be?
- Can you do it and if so, are you interested to do it for me (with a cash reward of course) in the near future around beginning 2014?
Thanks a lot in advance! :good:
Product idea:
A GPS tag for your bike/scooter
It’s easy to see that the people of the Netherlands largely rely on the bike and/or scooter as their means of traveling. With so many bikes, especially in Amsterdam people losing their bikes is a daily occurrence. Either by getting their bike stolen or simply not being able to find it. The same goes for scooters. Although you’re not likely to lose your scooter by not being able to find it, there is a reasonable possibility for it to get stolen. That’s where such a GPS comes in handy, because you will be able to track down your bike or scooter you lost. You will be able to track down your bike or scooter with an app you download on your Android or iOS device. First you get a map perspective which shows where you are and your bike or scooter is. As you get closer to your vehicle the map zooms in further and further until you’re close enough for a radar map to pop up for you to find your vehicle as accurate as possible
Ultra GPS Logger - the Ultimate GPS-Loggar.
♦Ultra·GPS-Logger ♦ is the best GPS-Tracker i know so far.
It's also got a high accuracy and many good features!
Have a nice day.♥
