App to compinsate for GPS pos err (20-30m) - Captivate General

My GPS is finally working consistently with Serendipity. What I am looking for is an app that would compensate for the 20 to 30 meters south that my gps is off so that it will stop redirecting me. Is there anything like that. I know its a bandaid but better a bandaid than nothing? I can't find anything and I guess I am hoping one of your programming super genius' around here will take up the task. Just a thought on what could possiblely make this GPS better (plumbob and all the other fixes are not working for me)

best bet to get accurate GPS all the time is get yourself a bluetooth GPS receiver. just bought one for $30 off amazon and accurate down to 5ft. with tracking on the spot.

I'm lucky enough to have one but I was just hoping that someone out there might think it super easy to code something like that and see the benefit for himself as well as the rest of us cappy users and undertake the project for ****s and giggles. I know it's wishful thinking but what the hay, had to give it a shot.
Freaking Samsung....maybe its time for the atrix...hell I better check into that one to as companies don't seem to giva fffff about customers anymore, it probably has issues to.
Thanks for listening
Jerry

I know where you are coming from man. I used to have a Nexus One and it has an awesome GPS, locked instantly (under 10 seconds from cold boot) and accurate to 1 metre (3.28 ft).

File complaints against Samsung about GPS

It's time we band together to file some neccessary complaints against Samsung until they either:
1. Give us a full refund so we can buy an out-of-contract smart phone through our provider.
2. Provide us with the same phone or a software update IMMEDIATELY that makes GPS work
There are no other options. What Samsung is doing is fraudulent and illegal. You cannot advertise a product with a feature it does not have. We were lied to and charged for a device under false pretenses. It's completely illegal and there should be some sort of restitution. It's not like we're asking for something it didn't have or we're asking for better performance...we're simply asking for a major major feature that is on most/all high-end phones and, more importantly, a feature it's advertised to have...
So we ALL need to take 15 - 20 minutes out of day to file complaints until someone takes notice.
1. The Better Business Bureau - http://www.bbb.org/us/ Go through the process, choose the HQ in Texas with the COMPLAINT in the title.
2. Samsung directly - This seems to fall on deaf ears but I think if a few hundred or a thousand people keep complaining...someone will notice a pattern.
3. The FTC - https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
4. The Attorney General of Texas (HQ for Samsung) - https://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/complain.shtml
5. AT&T or your provider - File on site and over the phone
6. Submit it to CNN - http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form11b.html and any other news site that will listen.
I'm not trying to be some complaining jerk but it's been months since this issue has been known about and we still have no fix. I am pissed because I use GPS all the time and I now have to carry a 2nd device...my 2-year old G1 or a dedicated device. LUDICROUS.
There is strength in numbers so please file some complaints...we paid for these phones and we deserve a fully functional device.

You might be ok getting ripped off. I'm not. And if you are ok with it, I've got a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell you. You can buy my Audi A8, it doesn't have an engine but I still want full asking price as if it had an engine. I've got a rolex I'll sell ya for $5k, except it's a fake and it doesn't keep the correct time...but I still want the price as if it worked.
I'm not ok with getting lied to, indirectly, or buying a broken product. It's not like it's $10 shirt I can return because it's missing a button (although, if you couldn't return a new shirt because it was damaged...I bet you'd be upset about that, no?)...it's a $400++ phone that does not work.
What functions would you be ok with not working? What if the wifi didn't work? Then complain? No?
It's a broken product, bottom line.
Did you do your research about the phone before you bought it? Did you not read that there were GPS issues? Did you buy it anyway?
Yes, you did buy it, and probaby didn't do the research. A company's worst nightmare is an educated consumer. Someone that they can't rip off. You fell into Samsungs trap and now you feel unhappy and lied to. When I got this phone I knew the GPS didn't work. I did my research. But it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I have GPS built in to my car, and I have a few other Garmin Nuvi's laying around the house.
Don't complain about the phone, just sell it, try and get some of your money back, and buy something that works for you. There are plenty of options out there. Just don't come in the forums and try to bash a phone that many of us love.
I just sent Samsung an e-mail through their web form. Jerks.

lol. So wait, you paid full price for a phone with a "feature" that you knew didn't work? And that makes you educated? Wat.
I have NO CLUE why you're OK with a company advertising a feature that does not exist...yet you still bought it. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SGH-I897ZKAATT-features Check the list...GPS...does it have GPS? No.
I did research on it, but, like everyone else, figured it would be fixed quickly with a software fix since I couldn't fathom a company as large as Samsung advertising something that blatantly didn't work.
Bottom line is the phone is great but it does NOT HAVE GPS...like it's advertised to have. Therefore, I cannot use MyTracks, GPS, Google Maps, Waze or any other feature that requires GPS. Therefore, I should get a refund for a full new phone out of contract.
I still can't believe you're OK with buying a separate device for something your phone is supposed to have...lol...yea corporate America...we're so insecure that we don't mind getting ripped off anymore.
USA! USA! USA! lulz.

I understand that we should all educate ourselves before buying a product. I bought my captivate on launch day and had done as much research until then about the phone, mostly because I had been long debating getting a N1. However, seeing as I did buy my phone on launch day I had no idea the GPS didnt work. Frustrating yes, dealbreaker no. Guess Ive learned not to buy first run products.

Yeah, I've never been one to buy something on launch day (aside from maybe an video game). iPhone4 users learned that the hard way. Educating yourself as much as you can before you buy something is the best thing you can do for yourself. It's not like you'd go out and buy a Ford Pinto these days without researching it first. Everyone knows they were crappy cars.

My GPS has worked perfectly from day one. I bought my captivate on launch day and have nothing to complain about. Sorry to hear you have had issues with your device. Perhaps you should try to trade it in under your retailers return policy? Just a suggestion.

No offense Shovelhead, but the GPS functionality for many of us is extremely spotty. Even after several returns. Usually the AT&T folks tried to discourage me by saying it is just a software problem that will soon be fixed. Experience has shown me that a working GPS is a rare beast (at least one that works after a few days/weeks of use).
I have had 3 phones with GPS, one Samsung Blackjack and two BB. All have performed admirably with quick (less than 10-20 s) locks and excellent accuracy as seen on Google Maps and GARMIN Windows mapping products. I KNOW that phones are very capable of decent GPS performance. So far this is a gaping hole in my Captivate experience.
My speculation is that this is a combination software/HW problem. I am guessing that there may have been a batch of sub par GPS chips as well as poor driver interaction with the OS.

I thought my GPS was working fine as well. Until I tried My Tracks in the market. It's clearly wrong. It's got your general location, but on the highway, it's saying I cross over east/west bound highways. And veers me off the road.

I feel your pain but when your GPS locks what is the accuracy? Best mine gets is about 15m. That could easily put you on either side of the road.

Now I do have a working GPS on my phone since I upgraded to the leaked Froyo. But it is not by any means dead-on accurate. Now of course the day I tested it, it was sitting in my cup holder with a straight view of the sky via my sun roof, but it was also cloudy and rainy. For the most part, it followed me exactly, but there were some spots where it did go off. When I use it now I put it on my dashboard and it works better.
Now in my belief, a device like a phone which does multiple functions, does none of them well because you have to have some kind of compromise internally either with hardware, software, or coding. I would never use my phone as a GPS when I'm in dire need to go somewhere, for instance if I need to find my way to the nearest hospital ASAP. I'd use a real GPS like a Garmin or TomTom because that's what they are dedicated to doing. Now I realize that now they add other features to GPS devices like bluetooth and music players and whatever, but those are added after the GPS has been written, tested, guaranteed to work as advertised.

I believe mine is similar. If i'm walking, or just using GPS for the fun of it (not driving) it's got me. But when I'm moving, it's not the best. I still think it is a software problems, but meh... I really don't know.
I haven't tried tweaking with any settings though.
I agree totally and will be filing complaints, we should have a sticky how to jump throught all the paper work.

Also, I've got a buddy in europe with the i9000. He said the 2.2 update fixed the GPS. But, cog2.2/COE beta 4 "fixed" it as well. It just didn't give you the most accurate fix. It's 10-20meters in variance.
When I had my 3gs, I could turn on maps, and watch the little blue dot follow me whereever I went. I got rid of my first captivate bacause of the GPS and I got my second cause I love the phone...and 2.2 was leaked...lol
Anyway, I agree with the OP about Samsung being douches about GPS. It sucks. I've had 3 other Samsung phones and all worked without a hitch. I get this one, and GPS tells me to kiss its ass. My GPS hasent made a lock in 2 days. I don't want to take it back cause I really do love the phone, and I can live without GPS, but Samsung did advertise GPS and its not there. Wether we did research or not about the phone, it still doesn't change the fact that Samsung sold, and is still selling, a phone not as advertised and that is wrong.
What really makes people mad is that Samsung hasent addressed it yet. I think there hoping we forget about it.

People we all know about the fixes and so called tweaks to date. No bueno.

GoodBye cRaptivate

I got sick of this phone. Even though the hardware is not quite what I had in my cRaptivate, I am far happier with my used Nexus One. I sold the stinking pile of fecal matter for $280 to someone and bought the Nexus One on the same day for $325. I didn't even care to hold out for someone was willing to pay more. I just wanted the thing out of my life.
After trying gpsfix #27Br2, with the whiz-bang tweaks and uber-optimized control-plane supl standalone/ms-based cold/hot start lbstestmode bla bla bla, and seeing that it once again made little to no difference in my gps performance I finally gave up on this phone.
It is my opinion that everyone that claims that their gps works fine doesn't really use it. They run google maps once after tweaking whatever setting or flashing whatever fix or rom that claims to have found the magic sweet spot, they get a lock (or even see a wireless network triangulated "lock") and then exclaim that their gps now works "better than ever" ... they never attempt to actually see how it tracks. They WANT their gps to work really well, so they pray to the magic placebo gods who convince them that things are really okay.0
So the nexus one has limited app space and a slightly slower cpu/gpu combo. Big deal. I can install apps to an ext partition on my sdcard with minimal space/performance hit, and I have yet to come accross any 3d stuff that did not at least seem to work at anything less than a butter-smooth framerate. I am sure the captivate jumps all over my phone with benchmark scores, but in the end, that means little to nothing.
Samsung (and the major carriers) should never have let this turd out the door with such a glaring, obvious flaw. This phone sucks donkey balls. They could at least release the source code for their drivers or whatever so the open source community can take a stab at it... More than likely it is some crappy hardware flaw that some exec decided to push through production because the bottom-line was all that really mattered. Anyway, I am done here.
good day sir!
Should of tried a different Captivate.
Don't let the door hit ya.
Rough to see ya go Thanks for not sticking around to post more useless garbage.
People who expect a phone to be a (reliable) GPS always makes me scratch my head. IT'S A FREAKING PHONE!
The grass is always greener on the other side. Good luck.

Just go...quietly. With only 38 posts since 2006 I'm guessing you got more than you gave in here.
^ ive done 400+miles on 2.1. works like a charm if you know what you are doing and you have a clear sky, which really means dont listen to anyone else, and if all you have is trial and error, dont use the settings that give bad results. oh and if you have trouble with google nav, download something else!
lbs test settings often have to match jupiter.xml and gps.conf. poking around in there can give bad results.
but yes the gps thing is blown out of proportion. many phones can nav fine but many can not. my friends have blackberries of various models and almost never get a lock. my friend has an lg something or other with android and it never locks inside a car, my iphone 3g couldnt lock inside a car. tom tom went as far as making a iphone specific dock with it's own gps chip because at the time the iphone only supported bluetooth audio and couldnt be linked to one of those bluetooth gps units.
the captivate actually has a pretty good ability to get a signal even if the positioning can be eratic under certain situations. but it's not the best for sure.
well if the op is happy with his nexus then good for him, it's a pretty cool device, but android devices seem to be moving in the way of powerful graphics chips and we'll see how long the snapdragons can keep up. with all this hardware coming out i wonder what will make its way into the app market in 2011.

TF201 GPS Dongle on TF700

I sold my Prime and I just recieved the GPS Dongle for the Prime. Looks like they spent time on making it. Looks good. Would it work on the Infinity and if it does would it make it any stronger or does it just kinda cancel out the internal and just use the dongle. Just curious to see if the zeroing in is any better. Maybe by feet instead of meters. Kinda cool to pull out a hi-power gps tablet in the pack when your on the trails. You can scan the area with google satelite maps at base camp.
Just sent it to the bayer of your prime... he/she needs it more than you...
Its was a seller on Ebay who I'm pretty sure new about the weak wifi and Gps since I specifically asked if they were weak before I bought it. I really don't want anything to do with them. No sympathy for then since they didn't want to refund my money. I had to have Ebay settle it and give me my money back for a defective and not as described item. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Not sure you will need it. If you search on YouTube for Infinity GPS videos, you will see that the GPS is very good on the Inifnity. Asus was not going to make that mistake twice!
Keep it, you never know when you might need it. Or, sell it on eBay for $1 to a Prime owner and have them just pay for shipping. Kinda pay it forward and get the good karma.
I just remembered I know someone with a prime. I'm gonna see if he wants it. Good Karma is a good thing.

Hey guys!

Got my hands on a verizon 32 gig blue SGSIII. Just got it activated, had to have one shipped in since it wasn't in stock.
Goodness, it's light. I've already forgotten it was in my hands a few times.
I do miss my physical keyboard - a lot. I won't ever get over this, but in the short time I've had it that's all I don't like...and knew that going in.
It'll take me a while to get situated and oriented, and a few days to clear out my 64 sdcard for it.
Can't wait to get to a hotel tomorrow so I can get some power for my laptop and back the device up and start exploring it.
Tempting as it is to install apps (can't wait to re-play my games on this lovely and large display) I can wait until I can pull the device structure onto my computer.
Just wanted to give a shout out and say hi, looking forward to fun stuff with you all in the future!

"dealbreaker"? Gosh.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Alert_System#What_the_national_level_EAS_would_not_do
In a The New York Times article (correction printed January 3, 2002)[1] "No president has ever used the current [EAS] system or its technical predecessors in the last 50 years, despite the Soviet missile crisis, a presidential assassination, the Oklahoma City bombing, major earthquakes and three recent high-alert terrorist warnings... Michael K. Powell, the then chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, which oversees the Emergency Alert System, pointed to 'the ubiquitous media environment,' arguing that the system was, in effect, scooped by CNN, MSNBC, Fox News Channel and other channels... [FEMA] activates the alert system nationally at the behest of the White House on 34 50,000-watt stations that reach 98 percent of Americans... Beyond that, the current EAS signal is an audio message only—which pre-empts all programming—so that viewers who were watching color images of the trade center on Sept. 11 would have been able to see only a screen with a generic text message along with a presidential voice-over, if an emergency message had been activated."[1]

There has only been a test in 2011 of the system, with mixed results. The likelihood of such a notification in the future is incredibly low, but it's only for major emergencies of national implication.
Still, if you really, really need to uncheck that box . . .

Appreciate if you'd take your hate and assumptions elsewhere, it is counter to the culture of XDA.
My issue is I hit a box I can't uncheck, an option that isn't optional. What it is, is irrelevant to the fact that it's something I couldn't change.
The dealbreaker reference is towards keeping the device unrooted stock.

So, rather then litter the forums with duplicate threads or encouraging duplicates, i'll just toss random questions and happenings in this one regarding my experiences with the device.
At least until i've had time to go through this sub-forum for the device more.
Feel free to answer any questions or not seen here, or comment on anything in this thread.
I just got home and my otterbox defender was here. Never had an otterbox before, so - wow.
Insane level of protection. Before it was so light and fragile feeling. Now, I like it so much better. A little bit of weight, a little bit of bulk, in just the right amount.
I feel like this device was made with the intention of sticking it in this case.
...And putting it in the holster, makes like the completion of armor for the device, what with the hard plastic shell shielding the screen from harm.
Seriously thinking about cutting the belt clip off and just leaving the smooth armor shell piece to pop on and slide the device into my pocket with. Seems like the perfect tweak to make it just right.
I feel likw even after only having it for a few hours that my future devices will take into account whether or not I can get one of these for it.
Okay - the drawback to having a screen big enough to actually use a soft keyboard on is the denial of one handed use.
No matter how I hold it, I just can't manage the device with one hand.
Now that I have the otterbox on it, i've been willing to try shifting my grip one handed during use, but really doesn't help much.
My other device is much smaller and I can use the whole screen comfortably with one thumb.
This one, not so much. If I have to reach across the screen, my palm will hit something before my thumb can get there.
I do think the benefits of the larger screen on my eyes and the actual enjoyment of the device far outweighs this inconvenience - but it does bug me.

You know, I had seen that before but it wasn't something I could really use with my other devices.
I may have to give it another look, given that this SGSIII is about what that thing was designed for.
Thanks for reminding me of something I had written off long ago.

That is actually pretty damn cool.I just wonder if it would annoy me for my phone to not sit flat on its back.
Edit: Oh wow. $30 for a little piece of plastic. Eek. I don't think i could live with myself if I spent that much on this.
I wonder how much that flygrip thing hinders getting it in/out of a pocket??
When you do get around to trying ROMs let me suggest the Synergy ROM. It is actively developed, offers all the good of Samsung's skin along with most of the great tweaks that make rooting so worth while. Moving from the DX to this phone has been great largely in part to this ROM.

Appreciate the heads up. Today is the last day of return without penalty, think i'm gonna keep it.
Right now It's just rooted, awesome quick guide here somewhere and I was able to bang it out in a few minutes while I was packing my truck to hit the road again for work.
When I get the chance, i'll pop a custom recovery in to block ota's - but right now exploring touchwiz and deciding what I do and don't like.
One thing bugging me is the device never seeming to be able to resume playing music after a call without having to mess with it... no matter what player I use.
No slight against the devs who put so much of themselves into the great works they've made for this device, but most likely I won't sample the roms available and just craft my own. I'll never get what I want unless I build it myself.
Thinking this time i'll just build from source instead of hacking apart a manufacturers version of Android.
Most likely i'll wait until i've got what I want or very near to before playing with other devs works. In large part to keep myself from being influenced by the directions they've taken.
I still haven't recovered all the files I hosted before goo went down, so getting all my works back up and available from my other device is taking up the time I can allocate to dev at the moment.
My laptop is on it's last legs, so until I can replace it ( not long now! ) can't get any real dev done anyway. Just small stuff. Can't keep it cool enough to compile a kernel even sitting on a hotel A/C vent to make it through the whole compile process of a gingerbread kernel without overheating and crashing...ICS is beyond the capabilities of my available hardware at the moment unfortunately.
Work is keeping me mad busy travelling the country ( USA) but i'm starting to have little bits of free time here and there around the constant exhaustion.
Pretty soon I should not only have the physical ability to stay awake long enough to learn something, but also the necessary hardware to do the learning on.
Meantime, it's ten or fifteen minutes of research here and there trying to familiarize myself with the device and the ICS source on my laptop for as long as I can keep it from overheating and shutting off.
It's okay, though, there's a lot to catch up on without needing to dive in and do for me at this point anyway, so the lack of acceptable hardware is more of an annoyance then a hindrance.
I figure i'll just keep adding random notes and observations to this thread to look back on later.
Comments, criticisms and suggestions most welcome from all of you out there!

I have no clue, it's showing I thanked both mine and yours, but I hadn't even seen yours yet and it already showed thanks for it?
Okay - palm swipe for screenshot is virtually impossible with the raised edges of the otterbox defender around the screen.
Might also be my not having cut out the otterbox screen protector yet, so has two on it and touches suck sometimes.
Well, just threw cwm on it, to block the ota.
...and found picture in picture video vieqing - so cool. I'm watching a movie right now while typing his on he S3. That's foward pogress and leveraging multi-tasking capabilities.

Android device for a light switch? Future SmartHomes?

MOD Edit: Please do not post links for fundraisers as they are against xda rules.
Found this yesterday and thought I'd share...
Supposedly its an android based lightswitch wifi enabled and programable (with smartphone). What do you think? Maybe some cool things could be done with IFTTT (if this then that) website. I was thinking a link to alert you via lights when security alarm is triggered...or even emails or anything really. I like the idea but not sure how practical it actually is. Anyways just thought someone smart could do some amazing things withit... and it could mean a smart home possibly.
Interesting
It seems like a very interesting thing...
This could be very handy for large houses I guess...

I hope that even if this one doesn't reach its goal that someone will come out with something else more apt to make the smart home a possibility. The dream home of mine would have something similar to this in every room. I could just talk to it and it would pull up a holographic image for me. Like future web surfing. Ahh but that is neither here nor there. At least with this campaign if the budget is not met I get my 75 dollars back with how they set it up. That is a plus. It is the first time that I have ever contributed to one of this things and I like to be the person who gets things first so if it does or doesnt work I will be okay.
As far as large houses I think that you may be closing off the posibility of something else. The video shows that you can link switchs so I could turn on the light in my hallway and bathroom at the same time... or whatever combination I so chose/preferred. Also with the way the base thing is setup it makes future addons so much easier... although I hope it is not something that is so easilly removable that a child could do it. I would love to be able to just pull out my existing switch/outlet without having to turn off the power and just plug in a newly designed whatever may come next product. That much seems to be a little undersold if you ask me.

I can picture what you say, about the holographic stuff, but i guess there's a long way (or maybe not so long) to go.
Yeah, the features they say are amazing, and that about the upgrading would be very neat.
Sorry if my answers seem vague, but i'm really tired and I have a lot of work to do...

Its all good. Get your work done and get some rest. I am starting to shutdown for the night my self.
I was really hoping that people would see this as something. Maybe its just me, but I see some great potential for future innovations from this starting point. I guess there is a lot of other things going on right now that maybe attention is focused on instead though so I get it.
Does anyone else use IFTTT? I saw a xda video on Youtube where a man teaches how to use it with a belkin wifi plug in. For nearly this same thing I am talking about, but without an android device.
Here it is

The potential for wireless devices is greatness. We should be looking forward to many many more of these I hope.
