Orange mobile windows phone - General Topics

I need some advice regarding an upgrade on my orange account. I have just hade a HTC touch 3G after being pleased with my last phone HTC elf. I have sent the phone back today because orange do not let you access the internet throught wifi on this phone. I am not sure what to go for and would be greatfull for any suggestions.

wifi is limited range your phone company would never know or be able to stop
you from using wifi to access the internet
best thing they can do is if you get it from them put a rom
on it where wifi was removed
in which case you putting another rom on it would reenable wifi
so if orange block wifi in that phone they are likely to do the same
on any phone you get from then which also have wifi
normaly wifi works even if one don't have a sim in the phone

I have been told by HTC that wifi has been removed from the rom. Orange are suggesting the Blackberry Curve 8900 what do you think of this phone?

ive never used blabberry so ill not bash them but i recomend the touch hd

only seen a blackberry once shortly
but they got more of a rep of being email
devices then general pda's with games
and piles of 3ed party apps
when wifi is removed from a rom one can just
flash it with a custom rom and it's right back
of cause that could make orage void the warrenty
which is why I never buy my phones with contracts

As a Blackberry Admin i can confirm that they are almost second to none as far as email goes but for device tweaking stay with WM.

Thanks for all your advice. i have put a complaint in to orange as I feel they have miss sold the HTC 3G because it says on their website and on the phone box that they send that it has WIFI. I am going to try the blackberry.

another one bites the dust

He'll be back, the BB is good at what it does until you want to tweak it then you're stuffed.
Personally i am a BB Admin with a WM device of my own, give me WM any day.

ATT Fuze ROM Questions

All,
I currently have an unbranded/unlocked HTC Tilt that I imported from the UK when they first came out about a year ago, well before ATT started selling their version of the Tilt. Mine has the front camera, etc.
As I understand it, ATT must have made some sort of deal with HTC on the Raphael (Fuze) because the Touch Pro I bought (and have since returned) would not support all of the 3G bands here in the states. I could only get EDGE.
I really want to get the new Fuze, but I am concerned about the limitations ATT is going to introduce on the ROM of this device, and I wouldn't buy the ATT version if there was another way to get the device with the appropriate US 3G band support.
So, my questions are:
1. Proxy Server settings: Is this available on the Fuze ROM? The Tilt I have now allows me to uncheck the "use proxy server" on my MediaNet connection profile. This is an important setting for me to have, as without it I can't get my Slingbox client and Newsbreak to work properly if it is enabled or not available to disable.
2. Internet sharing: Are the rumors of this being removed true? I hear that they pulled it. ATT is starting to look like Verizon with their ROM limitations. If they did pull the internet sharing app, can you copy it from another device or will applications like PDANet or WMWiFiRouter work in it's absence?
I think that is all I need to know for now. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

why dont you just flash a new rom to it?
internet sharing is there you just have to open from file explorer
and the NA touch pro will be available after the fuze with 3G
I thought about that...
Ok, I had considered that, but if I do flash a ROM, which one?
If I flash it, will it have the appropriate application/registry entries to support the bands for proper 3G operation here in the States?
GRRRRR.... why do they pull this crap? Apparently it is too much to ask to get a true "world" phone with all the bands in hardware and software!

well i work for at&t and i was given the fuze as a demo device about a month ago and have since decided to keep it (kind of a nice thing). you can do what i just did to mine. I flashed it with HTC firmware, then flashed the at&t radio's onto it. I was also given a link to a cab file that switches the keyboard to the at&t layout (my only gripe change).
The onlything i see intresting is the Fuze's we got in last week, when i booted one up and played with it for a customer, i noticed they have a 1.95 SPL they are shipping with. wonder if that will effect flashing to the unsigned spl. And i will say, They didnt trim much out from original software, however they gave it the good ole' at&t bloatware.

your store got multiple fuzes in??
and heres a question about bloatware on the fuze
with my 8525 whenever i hard reset i let it do the first customization to set the device up but i soft reset when it begins the 2nd since that is when att crap is loaded. does the fuze have a similar setup? or all at once

All the configuration is done during one customization screen. A soft reset to kill the bloat must be done before you see the "3...2...1..." countdown.

Rob-
I bought my Fuze off eBay so I can't swear that it is the same version as what will ship but I'm pretty sure that it is.
On mine, you can check or uncheck "use proxy server" in the Media Net settings just like on your Tilt. Also, mine DOES include the Internet Sharing. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but since it's there I'm guessing it works.
Internet Sharing is in the official AT&T ROM. As a matter of fact, when you connect the USB cable, you get 2 choices: Activesync or Internet Sharing. No Wireless Modem crap on the Fuze.

Fuze & TomTom 6

Looing round here, it looks like I may be up a creek... Can't get GPS lock to save my life... Sound about right?
Been known to happen...
If you're running stock ROM better ditch it. Da_G ported over newer GPS drivers that lots of Chefs cooked into their ROMs, there are also poll interval reghacks and disabling logfiles and all sorts of voodoo to try and get Raphael's GPS working nicely.
Disable aGPS for sure, and try GPSTest to keep the port open and try to hold your lock.
Wow that sucks...
I was hoping to get away with not flashing the ROM. My little brother is going to rip me cause his ***** ass iPhone "doesnt need hacking"...
Wow this sucks...
me as a previous iphone user, yes it does and i wish i had knew all this before i got the phone i would of actually gotten the iphone 3g, to make matters worse the iphone dev team is releasing they latest iphone unlocking tool on news yr that will unlock all iphone, including the 3g. but here we sit, stuck with a fuze that has unrelible gps and locked to a carrier. only thing i wish the iphone had was HSDPA like the fuze and i would so hop on a iphone in a millisec
You disable aGPS? Start > Settings > System: aGPS
Install two programs, QuickGPS and GPSTest. Run them in that order.
See what your stock ROM does from there. PS there are GPS threads all over the place with different methods to try.
Iphone has no hardware QWERTY, right off the bat it doesn't even make my list.
I agree with that...
Trying GPS Tool (Found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393645) and going outside seemed to finally grab a signal... I then booted TomTom 6 and used NEMA instead of bluetooth, and setting it to 4800 baud and Com4 worked...
I'm going to uninstall the AT&T telenav crap and soft reboot to see if it still works...
I'd really flash a cooked ROM if I were you, it's not just new GPS drivers... its like a whole new phone, performance-wise. If I was still running the stock ATT ROM I would not be very pleased with the Fuze.
So far I hosnestly haven't had 'perfomance' problems... Yeah I had to go remove crap just like a freaking new cheap laptop, but it runs MUCH faster than my Tilt ever did...
And wow... Not sure what did it, but that GPS Tool app is the only thing I haven't done, and now it's working. Signal in the house sucks, but by the window works in under 60 seconds... fantastic!
I was having GPS issues with my Fuze. I couldn't get a quick and reliable fix couldn't find any tips or tricks to help it all. I ended up exchanging the phone a i was within my 30 days and the new one seems to be working normally. I get satellite fixes every time and don't lose them. I still think it takes a bit to long to get a fix but thats probably just the phone.
If you can getting a replacement may be what you need.
I just received a TP and as many others, the GPS didnt work right away.
I used GPSTest and it found satellites instantly, with that open, TomTom picked up a signal instantly as well.
I compared the Touch PRO's GPS graph with that of a Diamond with aGPS enabled. The Diamond picked up 8 satellites whereas the TP only picked up 4.
Im going to activate this unit in a few minutes and enable aGPS with my Carrier's settings and see if that gets me locked to more birds.
Also to note, after I ran GPSTest the first time I didnt need it open for TomTom to work after that.
Using a CDMA TP /w Telus
The only thing I am unsure of right now is what most of you are referring to as "lag" in regards to the GPS. Do you mean it is just taking longer than usual to acquire a lock, or even with a lock, the GPS functions slowly?

Wow, your post has so much misinformation. First, the gps on the iphone is crap. Who cases if you have gps when you dont have turn by turn directions? Second, the iphone does have HSDPA. Third, the fuze is not locked to any carrier, call at&t and you'll have an unlock code in minutes. Fourth, the iphone 3g can already be unlocked. The fuze's gps is fine once you disable agps. Thats definatly not acceptable, and will hopefully be fixed soon. Have i corrected all your inaccuracies?
I just want to add my 2 cents here - on topic. I've had my Fuze since November 10. Installed GPS Test (used to that from my Moto Q), disabled aGPS, installed TT6 and it worked like a charm.
Now, off topic, as for the iPhone. My wife and son have each have one -- because they wanted a toy to surf the web and play games, and not a business ready tool. I've been using PDAs since the original PalmPilot, and "smartphones" since the original Qualcom Palm phone. The Fuze/TP is, in my opinion, the best business oriented device of its type that I have ever had or seen.
one other thing guys; why are you guys still using tomtom6? tomtom7 has been out for a while, and it supports vga screens, so it looks nice
TT6 or TT7 not that much difference, select colors some nice settings but both work well on the Fuze (at least mine).

your absolutely right about the iphone 3g not being unlockable at the moment, my mistake, but whats the point? if i wanted an iphone, and was on tmobile, why not save a few hundred dollars and get the 2G model? the only real difference is the gps; which is great and all, but again, until you have turn by turn directions its more of a gimmick. the only time i use my fuze gps is for tomtom for directions. you can definately try unlocking your phone, tell them your going overseas or something. good luck

well one the iphone 1st gen is not being made anymore and two the gps is not the only difference cuz the iphone 3g is also 3g hence the name 3g, brighter screen, and gps included, louder speakers and there is also the 16GB ver, not trying to make this a iphone vs fuze situation but you can also download voice guided gps software off the iphone app store and also other gps related software such as near by stores/places/taxis/ there is also a software to give u what speed ur traveling at using the gps, alert u of Police traps when ur doing long trips, and much more so the iphone is not only limited to the google map there is other GPS software that have turn by turn voice guided software

Olinex Hard-spl : the good, the bad...

First off, this is a complaint post. I truley grateful for you cooks, and programmers at this site. The following is just my observations (for better and for worse) on how this hard-spl affected me. The rhodium is my fourth smartphone that ive owned and unlocked from this site, so i slightly experineced with the unlock proccess (the mda, g1, and the kaiser). Although with this device, however the results of this hspl crack is most intriguing.
Lets start with..
The Good - For the most part its free. This means the gift of being able to try out other peoples roms is something anyone can enjoy. This is what xda is all about, or atleast this is what we cherish the most.
The Bad - Right after I installed oplix hspl and flashed my new rom, the camera doesnt want to load. It either the "data frame" message or the "driver" error. I trying everything except "relock" the hspl (flashed stock rom, stock radio, hard resets, that mitty wipe, camera cabs, registry edits,) . Im no expert, but some thing tells me its that Olinix. Does anybody know if this could be one of those "know issues" that sometimes happen with the verizon version?
The Ugly? -
Well, uglys not really the best word... atleast not yet. You see I realized just today, every since I sim-unlocked my phone (although not CID unlock) I discovered the most suprising thing, Free Data access! And no im not refering to Opera mini, im talkin about pocket twitter, facebook, youtube (low quality only), opera mobile, PIE, htc weather, the whole enchilada.
Now for all you people thinking this sounds too good to be true, well your right. There is one major flaw with the data stream, which i will get to later. First let me describe my exact circumstance to achive this oddity.
My rhodium is verizon. Its sim unlocked (but not security unlocked!), and im using a Tmobile prepaid sim with the sidekick plan. There is a balance of 0$ on my account, and it hasnt been active for a couple months. I have oplix hspl and a Mighty Rom installed. I deleted the verizon apn from connection settings and made a new one with the T-mobile apn, but i still named it Verizon anyways cuz im weird like that... After experimentation, i found out that it only works with the radio in Global mode. Good thing with a US sim inserted, the phone always defaults to GSM mode anyways... or atleast it does for me Under these conditions, I still get data access despite the fact that the sidekick plan doesnt include data access, and also the fact that THERES NO MONEY in my prepaid account.
Ok now to the ugly: The Catch. As i said before there is a catch to the "free data". That is its nowhere near 3g speeds, even for tmobile standards. Its like 8mbs/hr download speeds (using IE, not Opera mini). I know that seems horrid but theres a lot of things on you phone that requires a data plan (if no wifi available) thats very low bandwitdh. That social app updates, email sync, weather update, casual browsing, low quality youtube stream if desperate enough. Lets face it, we cant be surrounded by wifi all the time; so even getting dail-up_ish data access for free could be use be nice.
Just for the heck of it, heres my theroy why the bandwitdh is so slow. It seems to me that its due to constant interruption. For expamle when i go to google from IE, the web page seems to load a bit then stop 1/3 of the way. This Tmobiles server restricting access, and usually the browser would just quit after a couple of seconds. But for some reason it looks like the phones radio "reboots" just before the browser would normally time-out, and therefore able to "steal" another 1/3 of web page from the apn again and again. This play between APN and radio isnt too obvious and some may just pass it off as just a really low bandwitdh service.
This is very freaky behavior. Ever since Tmobile "secured" their sidekick prepaid data access to only sidekicks, i have not been able (with the exception of opera mini) access data from tmobiles hiptop APN. I wonder what make this device so special? Is because its a world phone? or are the newer radio patches able to reconnect faster? Well anyways am i the only one who noticed this, or am I losing it?
you're blaming the wrong people, t-mobile and at&t run on different gsm bands here in the states. you'll get 3g speeds in any country but not north america.
Not a single one of your complaints has anything to do with the Hard SPL. The camera access is determined by the software drivers in the ROM. Ask about it in the thread of whatever ROM you are using.
The 3G access for T-Mobile(1700/2100) is on a completely different frequency than your Verizon(800/1900) device. This is defined by the hardware, not the software. There is no "radio patch" to allow such a thing. You will never get more than EDGE speeds on the Verizon TP2 on T-Mobile's network. Just enjoy your free data access.

Im not too sure about that because I havent been able to get the camera working with ANY rom - and i tried a dozen already, even stock. I guess the only way for me to rule out my theroy, would be to take out hspl and reload official rom and radio. Im a little hesitant about that since you only get one free unlock from olinex, so im on the fence still.

Well, the icon at top is "E" symbol which i assume is for edge, because while commuting it would change to the "G" which i presume is a step below edge. Is this just a glitch in the WM OS?

If it isn't working on the stock ROM, then you've very likely got a defective device. Hard SPL has nothing to do with the camera. Set it back to stock everything and do a warranty exchange/repair if you still have time. Check with HTC to see when it will expire if it hasn't already. You normally get 15 months from HTC on a brand new device.

Why would that be a glitch? The service is determined by whatever the tower has. If the tower you're connected to has EDGE service, it will say EDGE. If it has only GPRS, then it will say GPRS. You will never be able to 3G from T-Mobile on the Verizon model. The hardware does not have the capability.

[Q] Android or HTC Wifi Issue

Hi all,
I have searched the threads as best I can so I post this...apologies for the legnth...
It is assumed that the wifi adapter in the Sensation will connect to the strongest signal to give us all the best connection experience possible, however with the proliferation of open wifi signals now on offer in the UK (Openzone and BTFON etc) it is now causing havoc when I don't have BT as an ISP.
The problem:
Currently the priority of the Sensation's wifi radio software seems to be connecting to an open signal first. The strongest is second.
Unlike an alternative Apple product, I haven't found any settings to set a preference for remembered wireless networks and to only apply the other default rules AFTER those preferences.
The Apple product also never connects to a network without the okay from the user. The HTC/Android software connects irrespective. Finally the "forget network" option doesn't work either, as it rescans, picks it up again straight away and because it's "open" connects again.
This always happens in my home as the BTFON signal from next door's BT router is actually stronger at the front of my house that my own router signal from the back. Before anyone says "get another router or position it somewhere else", I can't without spending at least £60+ for a SKY ANYTIME+ wireless receiver (which I refuse to do).
Is there another hidden option for "stock" phones? or perhaps there is a ROM?
What I want it to do is:
1) control which discovered networks I allow my phone to connect to automatically.
2) set a flag to ignore other found wifi networks, regardless of signal strength.
I know these fly in the face of the original idea of the Sensation and HTC, which was to produce a phone that connects to any network as silently and quickly as possible. HTC's "Watch" app and service launched specifically with the Sensation wouldn't have been so great without it.
Has anyone else spotted this with BTFON signals out there or fixed it?
EtA
(Vodafone stock Sensation on 2.3.4)
I've got a stock O2 (2.3.3) Sensation and the Forget Network works with BT Openzone, which is good as I've never been able to get past the "enter your phone number" registration page with BT Openzone. Mine also doesn't automatically try to connect to open networks.
If BT wasn't such a scummy internet provider they wouldn't have their home broadband routers broadcasting as BT Openzone providers.
On stock as well and yes the phone automatically detects the network again after "forgetting" it, but does not auto connect unless I go and tell it to connect again. Not to sure why you're auto connecting after forgetting the network...
You know, this sounds like FUD to me. One post and a non-existent problem no one ever reported.
Forget network works just fine. The phone wont' connect to an open network at random.
If this is real it's got to be be user error.
More than likely just another PEBKAC error...

I'm laughing my socks off at your attempts to belittle me and my issue.
So you both think you are experts do you? How?..based on the number of posts or thanks you have received?
One post of a problem no one has heard of before is how a forum starts off.
Trying to be "clever" with acronyms is childish.
I have posted my issue to HTC and rec'd a sensible response. It is now being looked into.
But then you don't care because its just operator error.
I suppose you never knew that you couldn't input British postal codes into the 'people' app until the bug was spotted. I wonder you raised that first to HtC and then it got fixed...That's right...not you guys either. Too busy belittling members.

Wish more Vodafone users had posted their experience, as I mentioned my O2 2.3.3 only auto connects to known networks and once connected to openzone I can't get past the page asking for my phone number
As an O2 customer don't you have free Cloud membership?
I used to with my iPhone...Go to McD's and whilst sitting inside connect...I'm sure it's still foc after popping in your phone number.
I thought I could use BTOpenzone as it is offered with Vodafone, but I have to pay seperately otherwise I can't get past the screen you mention either.
I do remember though that even with Cloud coverage my phone would at least download email. It was only browsing that would require passwords etc. Not sure wy this happened really though...seemed to be offering a cherry to tempt buying the cake I suppose.
BTW ...HTC have responded again saying that they are aware there are issues with Wi-Fi connectivity, specifically with baseband (radio) 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M and software 1.45.161.1
They say they will issue "stability" fixes in the next release to vodafoneUK customers (and others UK carriers I presume) in the coming months...

We get The Cloud (which works perfectly) and BT Openzone (which has never worked for me).
This thread seems to shed some light on the issue

Thanks for this.
Trouble is, that I don't have this application on my phone, although I confess I did at one time but that was two restores ago although it could I suppose have residual data on the SD card. I will check.
I have had a call from HTC Customer Support today as I gave my call experience a bad customer feedback score.
The issue will now be raised further for investigation the developers and they are going to inform me as to when the next update will come out...or at least that is what the guy said...I run a Helpdesk myself at work, so I realise the situation...but we'll see.
HTC have been honest and fair to me in the past so I have good expectations.
I'll report back...
BT Openzone issue
Had this problem myself. If you are on Vodafone then go to the "My Vodafone App", Click the WiFi Finder tab, press the menu key (next to the home button) and click settings. Untick "Enable BT Openzone" and your Sensation will properly "forget" BT Openzones.
Let me know if this helps.
@jengla Thank you very much! This worked perfectly. Been driving me crazy for months

[Q] No Signal. Limited Service. --- HTC Sensation

Hello people! I am a newbie on Android, so don't expect me to know deep stuff about Android.
So, I've been using HTC Sensation for about a month now. I've been using it without problem, but suddenly on one night, hard rain strike Bangkok. Suddenly, my phone goes no signal and limited service. I thought it was some some problem, so I wait for a while in order to get the signal back. About 20 mins later, my signal bar is back, but still no Mobile Connection icon (e.g. H or 3G). The worse thing is even though my signal bar is back, I still can't make/receive any calls or sms to/from anyone. I thought it might be some problems with the towers, however, when I switch my SIM to my mom's iPhone, the signal appear to work and the connection worked without problem.
That's when I thought its the problem with the phone. But... when I went out of my area (house), signal appear to work with 3G and I can perfectly make calls or texts without problem. When I got home, No Signal once again. So now I don't really know if its the problem with the network or the phone...
This really annoys me as heck. If someone can give me advices, I will be much appreciate. Thank you very much
My phone goes from having full bars on 4g to nothing randomly me having to pop out the battery to get service again.
Tired of the same

i decided to make the jump and my issues went away, i would have preferred to remain stock however i don't like to be branded, stuck with bloatware etc..
thank you and all of you reply this thread. I am very new to Android, so I'm not really sure about 'rooting'. So Lostcat, you have this issue? and your issue went away after you've rooted your phone? Also, if I am going to root my phone, will all my data, contact, apps, and setting gone? If yes, anyway to do easy back up?
Thanks
I was having similar issues so I sent mine off for repair (through carphone - they say they send htc phones off to the manufacturer but considering its only been a week and they have reapired it i doubt that it has been sent off) still im sort of glad it didn't go off http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2011/10/htc_phones.html - im going to get it this afternoon. will report back with findings

You have answered your question yourself here.
It's clearly a problem with your local cell since that night with the hard rain, since when you go to a different area your phone works fine. Contact your network and report theres a problem with your local cell.
cheers
Are you sure? Why does he have a signal in his mum's iCrap?

Yeah, at first I thought its the signal problem too. But when I switched SIM and put it in my mom's iPhone, it work. And I use her SIM on my phone, and it worked too! Pretty confusing eh?
Alright.... I've decided to give my phone to the HTC support to fix it after I've asked a lot of people and they said its the antennas problem. Anyway, since I phone is rooted, in order to give to support, I need to unroot it.
I know people posted a lot of steps on unrooting HTC Sensation, but I want ONE SPECIFIC SAFE and SURE steps for unrooting... Thank you
