I think I lost my Fuze, should I get another one from ATT insurance... - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi, wondering if anybody can help me out with ATT policy. I was visiting my grandparents in Toronto when I lost my phone the day before I had to fly home to Los Angeles. Unfortunately I did not have time to look for it since I was busy packing for the trip home. Anyways when I got back I called ATT to tell them my phone was lost and they said they will sendme another phone when I pay my deductable.
Anyways I have two questions
1. Would it be possible to wait until the Touch Pro 2 comes out next month and ask for that as a replacement + cash if needed?
2. What happens if my family manages to find it and mail it back to me? Will ATT know that I found it and force me to return the replacement? Would they even care after i pay the deductable?

they'll probably just send you a refurb fuze and likely refuse the upgrade, especially when the fortress is a new release. i can't see them upgrading you even with cash.
att won't know you found your phone. i had lost a phone and reported it and found it 1 month later and went on to use it fine.

You guyz are lucky, wonder if these giant beast are so nice. :O

Seriously? Do you even know what you're talking about? :| If you report a phone stolen and find it and use it, it's no big deal UNLESS you get a new one via insurance. Then it's called fraud. You have to pay the deductible for your phone if you want it via insurance and they'll send a brand new in box one to you. No, you cannot wait till the TP2 comes out and exchange it for that. That will only happen if you've warranty exchange your fuze a lot and you complain to AT&T a lot. Quite a few people have done this. If you really didn't know, AT&T can track you via IMEI. They know which account is linked to which IMEI. They will know when you're using a blacklisted phone or when suddenly a "stolen" phone is being used on the same sim card. Don't take that risk

1) TP2 isn't comming to AT&T anytime soon, and they will never give you a better phone plus cash
2) I believe they put a status code of a bad or lost ESN id on the databases, so the phone can't be used again on the AT&T network. It may even come up as a stolen status.
That won't stop you from being able to use the phone as a PDA

#2 is not true, but #1 probably is.

I believe Cassetti is right about #2 When you call it stolen, they block the esn id so the thief can't use your phone.

the fact is : its not true. Proven fact.

thx for the info guys, i called up att and told them what happened, paid the deductable and picked up a new fuze. I ask them what happened if i manage to find it and they said most likely they will let me keep it as a back up but i would need to call them to reactivate it or something like that.
guess i;ll just skip the touch pro 2 and wait for a WM7 device or that rumored microsoft "pink" zune phone lol...

It is not blacklisted. If you find it you can use it or sell it. You don't have to "reactivate" or anything, just put a SIM card in and off you go.

Buying a Used Fuze, Have a Question

Hey guys, I'm new here and I had a couple of questions before I bought a used Fuze. Right now I have verizon and I am switching over to att because my contract is over.
1. I am scared to buy a used fuze because if I buy a used one from someone and it is stolen can it still be activated?
I know that if I buy a verizon phone that is stolen then it can't be activated.
not sure how you handle it in usa but in europe I never had to activate any phone
just pop in the sim and type in the sim code
heard about the aktivating in usa in relation to iphones
The thing is that I'm gonna sign a 2 year contract with att, I just wanted to know if I buy a used phone and it is stolen will I still be able to use it.
I am not going to take a chance on buying a stolen phone if I can't use it.
Get a phone you know for sure isn't stolen, make sure it comes with all the accessories and box and then you can feel safe.
Do not buy a phone if you know it is stolen, that is both illegal and wrong.
if you buy a stolen phone which have been reported stolen the police give
the IMEI number hardcoded in the phone to the operators to be added to their
block of service list in the country
and other countries the operators have a working relationship with
Ya ok, then the best thing to do is buy a new phone.
I was saying that if I buy a used phone and it is stolen then I wouldn't be able to activate it.
I didn't mean to say I WAS gonna buy a stolen phone, no no.
Thanks guys. Goin to get it in an hour!
if you're signing a 2 yr contract anyways, why not get a subsidized phone straight from ATT. up until a few days ago, wireless att com website had the refurbished Fuze for FREE w/ 2yr contract. just checked website now and it is out of stock. they go in-out of stock so call in and ask.

Here in the USA we don't have the IMEI blocking service, even if the phone was stolen you can still use it. When my Blackberry was stolen I called AT&T to report it and all they could do was block my PIN from the device and not the device itself. It's not like Verizon or in any other country.

verizon uses CDMA... if (for whatever reason) you need to change phones, you have to go through Verizon to activate the ESN(cdma version of IMEI) on the phone to tie to your Verizon account
for GSM, as long as the phone is unlocked, just slip the SIM card into in and the phone should work
one reason why i like GSM better: you don't have to do much to get a replacement phone

Need your input! And help

So to make the story short. I got the Captivate back in July at release.. and have been disappointed with the lack of support and updates. My wife who had an old Iphone 3g,(which has become horribly laggy due to having to be updated to the 4.0 crapware), loved my Captivate.
So I told her when the Inspire comes out, I will use her eligible upgrade and get that phone. Once I get the phone, I will trade her phones. Which we did.
Does AT&T disapprove of this? We are on the SAME family plans, have been from years with AT&T. Since AT&T uses sim cards it makes it really easy to do this. Do they consider this a breach of contract? The reason why I ask is when I was on the phone with the Service Rep they made a comment that my lines phone number shows the Captivate not the Inspire. And they wanted what was called the IPC number on the phone. Its my phone, I bought it. But with my wifes upgrade. They said They could just change the IPC numbers on my line and her line to show this but.. I dont want them to get the number then come back and say. That I did something wrong and try to make me pay from something.
What do you guys think? And have anyone you experienced this problem?
They don't care as long as you sign a new 2yr. My store does this about 5 times a day. Just make sure that the proper data plans are on each phone, especially the hspa+ data plan for the Inspire.
Enjoy your new phone.
My experience is that they don't care. They just want the right phone listed for each line. once you buy it, they don't care if you use it for another line on a family plan.
Yup, I've done this more than once... did it today, even. My son gets my hand me down phones, so I upgrade once a year. If he wants the latest phone, he can go get his own contract.
Did that today as well. They don't care. Just pay the bill.
Thanks guys, so I can go into the store and have them change the phone to mine, and have them put the new sim card in it, so hopefully it gives me the 4g.
By the way what is the number they are talking about? She told me to dial something think #66#1.. I cant remember but it will show the phones number. Anyone know how to do it?

[Q] HTC Arrive on Verizon?

Ok - I tried Sprint, and the coverage is just too bad for me to tolerate... But I really want the Arrive. I do not want a phone without a keyboard, so the Trophy won't do it for me.
I'm going to end up going back to Verizon, but I want to know if I buy an Arrive without a plan, can it be made to work with Verizon, and what consequences there would be? Someone suggested on another thread that if I wanted to get my hands dirty, I could change the ESN. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, but I need someone to show me what I need to do. Also, as far as consequences, would an Arrive on Verizon get updates? If no, would I be able to get updates from someone on here doing something similar?
Thanks for any suggestions.

AFAIK, changing the ESN is the only problem. I think you gotta have someone at Sprint/Verizon do it for you though. So hopefully that person owes you a favor
I also need to know if this would prevent me from unlocking the phone using the official dev channels. Thanks.

Grrr... I don't know anyone at either place. Any way around that? I was hoping it would be as simple as unlock it, find the ESN, and change the ESN to match that of my Verizon Touch Pro 2. Not so simple?
While I can't help with the Sprint/Verizon transfer stuff, I can tell you that, no matter who your provider is, you will always be able to officially dev-unlock your phone. Also, you will get WP7 updates, but they will likely appear only when Sprint authorizes them even if you're on Verizon.
Thanks... Since I don't have a lot of money rolling around, I really can't afford to have a phone sitting here that I can't talk on, so I'm really interested in whether I'll be able to get both talk and data working on Verizon with the phone. Someone from Microsoft on the Windows Phone team suggested buying a phone from Zones, the official site for planless WP7 phones, saying that the people at Zones are pretty good about getting the unlock codes for the phones. Would this make a difference in getting it onto Verizon, or am I likely to still have a problem getting my phone onto their network?
I've done this before and in 2008 it was much easier than it was now (posting how to get the tp from sprint on vzw at ppcgeeks)
that said, its not as easy for a variety of reasons. Personally I haven't tried to hit up pst to see if it even works
Verizon did block the hole that was previously used in 2009, so the only way to do it is through esn hacking. And on many places, that can't be discussed.
With windows phone 7 I am unsure if the process is still the same or if sprint still used msl to lock pst on their windows phone devices. Personally I would sell the arrive, wait a few weeks, and then go to the htc mozart on vzw's network. I know it's just me, but I haven't really begun to look at a cdma htc arrive to see if an esn change/hack is even possible on this platform.
I know vzw's stance on adding esn - they won't do it no matter who you are. You can try to send the device to them, but that has a very low rate of acceptance. The vzw handset alliance is a joke imho, which leaves users frustrated and with very little options.
Fooling around with the htc arrive I have to say its quite different but not a bad different. It's a shame you may have to sell it because of verizon being verizon
I know some of the regional carriers will flash/alter the ESN for you, but Verizon is pretty staunchly against it. Good luck getting it to work.

Flashing HTC Arrive
This is what i did to flash HTC Arrive using another CDMA operator (in this case, Smart Telecom Indonesia):
1. get the MSL/SPC of the phone. you can ask Sprint, or buy it from an unlock service provider (i bought it from nick flash cricket dot net)
2. put the phone in diag mode, using ##MFG#. i use winXP 32bit, and use this driver "HTC BMP USB Driver.zip"
3. connect to QPST. you can change the MSL, network code, IMSI, MDN, PRL, and auth HDR setting (evdo parameters)
4. connect to CDMA workshop to enter the AKEY
5. reboot.
now, my HTC arrive is with Smart Telecom. but alas, i can not unlock it to sideload apps

You know how rumors, Windows Phone 7 and Verizon are..... a bunch of bull****... I'll believe it when I see an offical press statement. That phone is just another one of the "Arrive" phones that passed FCC, no other info, it could be going to all the small CDMA carriers for all we know.
To the OP, you said you can't afford to have a phone sitting around and not working. How do you feel about spending $500-600 on a phone off contract ? That would be about what they would want for one.
I'd be interested in getting this working and trash the ESN on my TP2 (with a cracked display) if this was possable (and getting everything working, internet, SMS, etc with no issues) but, I'm not willing to dump $500+ on a phone that I might have problems getting working...If I could get it for $150-200, I'd be all over it though..
Edit: Checked on ebay...brand new, no contract, there is a buyit now for $360, so cheaper than I thought
Latest word on VZW is May 5th...(Next Thursday), I'd wait for that point before even attempting this.

Yeah, I saw the rumor of 7 Pro coming to Verizon (posted a link to it on another thread yesterday), and I have just about as much faith as you do. I'm unemployed, so no, I really don't want to spend $500 on a phone, but if I had to, I could, but only if it is going to actually work. And yes, I've already been looking on ebay. For the moment, I'm waiting on my refund from Sprint for the two Arrives that my wife and I had, and then I'll decide if I'm going to try it, or if it looks like VZW might actually DO something.
I'm growing more disgruntled with Verizon with every passing day, but unfortunately, they may as well be considered a monopoly where I live. I switched to Sprint for the Arrive, but had to switch back. I can look out my window, across the parking lot, and often see my pastor standing outside the church so he can talk on his ATT phone, and I'm just not willing to do that. So I guess I'm stuck with waiting until VZW gets over its grudge against MS for the Kin debacle. It's just ridiculous.

Can you, as in physically? Yes. Will they add the ESN for you? No. I read about the process and it has to be done by some really high-up tech guys. They'd lose their job doing it.

i don't know about verizon's policy. if they won't put a non verizon esn in their system, then HTC arrive on Verizon will never gonna happen, unless you can change the esn (i heard it's illegal in there).
AFAIK, in Indonesia, cdma operators will be happy to insert as many as possible other operator devices, to increase their ARPU. Competition is very tight in here, so flexibility and new technology adoption are very important. We are expecting evdo rev. B available to public in June

Yep and with the Microsoft eployee poster, it's been coming from mid Jan...We are talking almost 5 months of waiting for a phone to be released. You can show me 10,000 pictures of some phone that could of been photoshopped with a VZW logo (I do think its real tho) but, till we have a press release, it does not matter.
Verizon could wait till June 30th (as some have claimed) are you willing to wait that long ??? I know I'm not.

I agree 100%..
I'll tell you what, If we don't have at least a press statement by May 15th, I'll work with you to figure this one out. I'll call and pester tech support to get someone who will activate one (and share it with ya, if possble).
If that won't work, I'll figure out the...ugh...ESN cloning thing and use it from my TP2. I'm serious, you can PM me here or on PPCgeeks under the same user name.
I want this quest to end, if this is what I have to do, I am willing to do it... I'm tired of waiting for VZW to get off their ass and get us paying customers what we want.
I'm so pissed about it, I am seriously looking into going to AT&T and they are ok in my area but, not great. I can always go back within 15 days if I had to

Yeah... We know that at least the poster is official, so the Trophy WILL come to VZW. The question is how long they're going to jerk their paying customers around before it does.
As far as getting an Arrive to work on VZW, it would be so much easier if the new 7 Pro rumor is true AND happens sometime before Jesus comes back. But if you get an Arrive working on VZW, I will definitely be with you. I'm unemployed, so I can't afford to buy a phone if it's going to end up bricked because I did something wrong, and as far as programming, I'm just your basic .NET/SQL programmer without much experience, because at the manufacturing plant I worked at, I was the only IT guy, so I had to do it all, therefore didn't have time to specialize in anything (which is why I'm having so much trouble finding a job). And as far as whether it's legal or not to clone an ESN? Frankly, I don't care. It'd be my phone, so I really don't care what they say I can and cannot do with it.
I really want a phone, though, because I'm planning for this to make me some money, selling in marketplace. I've already paid for my developer account, and had my Sprint phone unlocked the official way, but had to send it back, since I went back to VZW. But that means my dev account is sitting there not making me any money, while the expiration date creeps closer. Also, I signed up for the MS App Garage event in Atlanta next month, so it would be great to have a phone by then. Hopefully we'll know something OFFICIAL soon. I'm so ticked at VZW.....

probably using cdma workshop yes
but again highly illegal considering vzw won't add ESNs of any kind. Heck even if you say that you got your device from HTC themselves, the ESN won't be added

Premium handset protection... Lost phone?

what does Tmobile do with the lost phone in question? do they disable it ? I'm wondering how they prevent people from selling their phones and getting a replacement under warranty for a profit..?
Not sure but they know. Put your sim in another phone, call them, they will be able to tell you exactly what phone you have.

Let's say my friend, Swim, has a Tmobile phone that he has insured through their PHP plan. He knows that if it were stolen or he lost it, it would cost him $130 to replace. He also knows that he could easily get $250-350 if he decided to sell his phone. So he is thinking about selling his phone and then just telling Tmobile that he lost it, so that he not only gets a newish replacement phone (possibly even an upgrade), but also pockets over 120 bones. Question is, does Tmobile deactivate his first phone somehow, so that whoever bought his original phone is essentially screwed?

I have 2 things to say, and they're contradictory.
1. Official T-Mobile PHP Handset Protection FAQ (http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1722) : Says phone will be disabled. Specifically:
All lost or stolen devices will be blocked from access to the T-Mobile network. Devices claimed as lost and stolen will no longer function on the T-Mobile network.

2. I used to be a tier 2 T-Mobile PDA Tech Support rep. I never once had a customer's phone not work due to being stolen/blacklisted. Not once. It was not in any of our troubleshooting steps to check such a thing either. As far as I was aware, there was NO WAY to block a stolen phone on T-Mobile and that's what we told customers.
Things might have changed - it's been about 18 months since the location I worked at was completely laid off and shut down. A lot can happen in that time.
Now.... do you want to take the chance? Go for it. But don't say you weren't warned.
So, let me get this right. You are asking in a public forum about committing insurance fraud and the forum has recorded your IP address also. Insurance fraud is a felony in most States. Makes perfect sense to discuss it here. If anyone on the forums assists you in any way then you have both committed conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. Conspiracy in and of itself is a crime even if you never go ahead and commit the crime. Smart.

No Sim Card Inserted

Just bought a Samsung Infuse on Craigslist and everything appeared to work fine, but it gives the error "no sim card inserted". I have tried multiple sim cards, but the results are the same. I also tried a factory reset. I have attempted to have it replaced by att and they confirmed its still under warranty, but because my sim card has never registered in the phone they are giving me hassle over it.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to fix this issue? The phone looks so new its hard to believe it has such a bad issue. The only similar story I could find was trouble with new sim cards.
Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks.

Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know if this is helpful or not but that happened to me one time. I was in an area with no service at all. How is your typical signal?
I normally get a very strong 3g signal here, so I don't think thats it. Good idea tho
Eh it was worth a shot. Tell AT&T that you broke your SIM card during the insertion process?
Same thing happened to me. Got it off craigslist.
Brought it to AT&T warranty store and after jumping through millions of flaming hoops, the guy finally told me the phone's IMEI was "locked" to a certain number or plan or something for 6 months after the date of purchase; may 15th. He said the phone will on it's own be usable November 15th or 16th, ergo today or tomorrow; and if not to bring it in for a swap.
Good luck!
Oh man that sucks. Would totally make sense tho. Thanks for the info, I wonder if I could possibly unlock it or do anything to free it from that lock.

I tried unlocking with little success. My best guess for you is to contact AT&T service and ask when/where the phone was purchased, the guy was able to tell me it was from a best buy on may 15th with nothing but the IMEI number; that should give you an indication of when you could use yours. Of course there's also the chance there's just hardware damage, but the phone is under a 1 year warranty if it was new so you should be fine with that, continue to jump through ATT's hoops and you'll come out the other end some day

It's a better idea to use Samsung's warranty, because as long as it's under the one year warranty, Samsung will fix/replace it.
I checked it at the samsung website and confirmed its still under warranty. That will probably have to be the route i take. I am making a final attempt to get ATT to swap it tho cause they will send the replacement out rather than waiting for me to send this one in. Lets hope :/
Look for an AT&T warranty and repair center in your area, they can replace it in person on the spot.
I dont think i live near any unfortunately. I call att and the customer service reps really seem to understand the issue, but they have to transfer me to warranty to finish the process and everything goes to hell. They barely speak english and dont listen at all! So frustrating
If you do go to an ATT store and say hey, I want a new SIM card tthey will do it. I have had it done before. Just be nice, pick the guy that looks nerdy and doesn't like guidelines and shoot. I one had a guy who said that he would help me get unlimited data even a year and a half after they stopped it. They have good people there. Find them and ask them for a new one!

How can you use the warranty of you weren't the original buyer? I also bought mine off of craigslist but i thought you needed proof of payment to get any kind of warranty replacement...

I got to work and tried a 3 year old sim card since I saw a post that someones infuse only worked with old sims, but had no luck with that. I also went to ATT on lunch and they were pretty much useless. I made a final call to ATT warranty, and while he put me on hold for another 20 minutes, i took a hard look at my sim card holder and noticed the contacts looked a little odd.
I am assuming when the original owner yanked his out it pulled the contacts and mangled them a bit. I was able to bend them up with my fingernail and then jam my sim into the slot forcing the contacts back into place. Powered it on and it freaking worked! I'm thinking as long as i never remove my sim it should be fine. I'm sure its got a hell of a good connection on the sim now lol. Thanks for all the ideas and info guys. I gotta say the ATT warranty department is absolute garbage customer service too. Just wow.

So far I have been able to swap out an Atrix, and a Captivate that were still under warranty. As long as you have used the phone with your sim card on that number they wont even question you. My trouble with the warranty this time was partly because I was never able to register on their network with my sim, and partly because as it turns out the phone isnt even 30 days since originally purchased, so every call ended with them telling me to return it to radio shack.
