Tmobile 1.5 OTA TBD... - G1 Android Development

Even though most of us already have some version of cupcake whether it be JF, Haykuro, Dudes, or some other means I thought some of you may be interested to know that Tmobile plans on releasing the official 1.5 OTA starting towards the end of the May 11th week.
So we should all start receiving the OTA sometime thereafter that date.
Supposedly it will not of course be rolled out to those of us already using a version of the ADP 1.5.
If this is already posted I do apologize but I have searched and no word.

Cupcake on T-Mobile G1

I've just received a new T-Mobile G1 and I am pretty desperate to update to a cupcake build. There's loads of guide here that will walk me through it no problem, but there are some things they don't explain fully (or at least, I can't find them).
Will I lose all my contacts and messages when I update? Will I lose all my T-Mobile data (like message settings, 3G settings etc.?). Will Market and everything else still work? What will stop functioning correctly when I do upgrade, specifically for T-Mobile in the UK?
Thanks a lot!

You will lose messages, you will not lose any T-Mobile data, you will not lose any contacts. I suggest you check out Haykuro's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=498026
You will need root. And I suggest you go with haykuro's 4.5 build. I won't go in to any more detail, just do some research in haykuro's thread and others on how to get root, etc. Good luck.
Wel.. Where can i start? The cupcake your possibly reading about isnt fully working on G1 Yet..
I recomend you try one of the magic roms ported to G1, Preferbly 5.0H
Root is easy to achieve, Just read around.. Plenty ahve asked how to do this before, so please dont make new threads, Just read please
If you are referring to the ''Cupcake'' that T-Mobile is releasing this Easter then all these guys are wrong. If you do update to HTC Sapphire it will void your warranty and there's a small(Or large if you don't follow directions) that you could brick your brand new G1. The ''Cupcake'' that T-Mobile will release or at least hoping it will, will be coming in the next days. This update is 100% safe and will not do anything harmful to your g1. It wont even delete anything.

And as I've said in other threads re: Cupcake, I say we wait for JF to do his thing with it.

That's exactly what I'm planning to do. I was hard set against root when I first got my g1, but I have seen the light and enjoyed my rooted g1. Thank goodness for the jfupdater app

Huh? That has nothing to do with my post other. My post was answering his question about ''CupCake'' from T-Mobile and not some other Rooted Cupcake. I understand that there are other cupcakes but the best will be T-Mobile for the time being.
I think I said CupCake enough times

Actually, he asked about *a* Cupcake build - he made no mention of an official build, therefore it is reasonable to presume that he is referring to *one that is available* and not *one that isn't*.

Really? For the time being, there is no T-Mobile Cupcake build so how it can it be best? Granted, if and when it comes out, it may well be superior, but that is by no means certain since Haykuros builds are getting better all the time.
If the OP is waiting on an official T-Mobile Cupcake update, I suggest there is no point asking around here since if he leaves his phone with a vanilla build, he'll get the update soon enough, if and when it is released.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys. I'm not waiting on the t-mobile build as I have little faith in them releasing it any time soon. I'll ask my question in a different way; what's the best build to put on my UK t-mobile G1? With regards to battery life and features? Thanks
I suggest you read the threads about rooting your G1. The first thing you have to do is downgrade to RC7, and get root. Then, don't accept any OTA (from T-Mobile) upgrades if you should get a notice.
After downgrading and getting root, read up on some of the different builds. You can go to JF's RC9, which is a modded version of the official UK one with root. I would really advise you to do this first, so you will know how to flash your roms, and how to flash the radio.
It will give you a stable version which won't accept OTA updates so you don't have to worry about losing root. (Plug your phone into a power source, or at the very least, be sure your battery has a full charge while flashing, and don't ever turn your phone off while it is flashing.)
After that, read threads like the one comparing the two Magic versions. 5.xG is the google version, and 5.xH is the HTC version.
Once you have gotten root and gone to RC9, you will be able to do something called a Nandroid backup of your phone. You will then be able to try both versions of magic, and also to restore your phone to RC9 if they don't work out for you without losing anything. (Another reason to try a more official mod before trying the Magic ones).
edit: I just found this on the Magic wiki page. It looks helpful: http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/wiki/PageName
Have fun with it!

G1 and mytouch 3g users get android 2.5 update in january

http://droidheaven.com/2009/12/12/g1-and-mytouch-3g-to-get-2-5-update-in-january/
We get the Android 2.5 update in January!!!!! When Cyanogen/Dwang put this into their rom, everything is going to be EPIC
is there any actual proof for this?
if you look at the comments below the article droidheaven even said to go and ask t-mobile. i'm going to do that and hope.
UPDATE: I just talked to a T-Mobile Rep and he said he never heard of a 2.5 update coming in January. He checked and there is no documents. But there is hope. He also told me that there is an update and he won't be surprised if it was 2.5. One more thing. He said it is coming quickly.
LETS KEEP OUR FINGERS CROSSED!!!!

boys this is HTC we are talkin about, if ur device is older than 6 or 7months old you get no support whatsoever i was shocked to hear the hero was getting 2.1 so il be amazed if the G1 gets 2.5 i hope u do tho
HTC already gave up on the Dream, however, Android Alliance will never give up on its devices, while T-Mo has to support it at least until it actually has a single device with a different CPU
if only the mytouch gets the 2.5 update can the g1 get it too? i don't mean like OTA update but cyanogen/dwang/someone turns 2.5 into a ROM?
they should really make devices that can go up at least one in updates (like from 1.x to 2.x or somewhere along that line)
AWSOME
This means I loose hope for good touchscreen with Keyboard from Tmobile
YES APPS are back in bussniess
T-mobile G1-Black
All roms from time to time
RA Recovery
coming but not soon iPhone apps on g1 installer.

Samsung Finally Announces Froyo Upgrades for Galaxy S

Saw this on Engaget today Samsung has finally announced the official Froyo rollout.
It will start in the UK in early Nov and all carriers updated by the end of Nov was the official press release from Sammy.
Cross your fingers..... Maybe the release of the code will speed up some Captivate dev.
We can only hope
September, then October, now November...Let me guess...December is next?
Looking back over it, the press release reads like it's only going to cover the UK. WTF?
It also says that their pulling the rollouts they did in the Nordic countries because things were jacked up. Curious. Samsung sucks.

Because it is only a press release from Samsung UK division. They can't speak for other regions.
Samsung US said nothing and that probably means Nov. 2012 for us.
Beat me to the punch. You can read more here on Endgadget.
And the You Mobile Link as to why it was pulled in Scandanavian land too.
Pretty much I'm ok with a later November release if Samsung actually fixes the lag/bugs reported in that article.

If you read the article a little more closely - Endgadget states that it will roll in the beginning of November for the UK - then start rolling out at the end of November to the rest of the world (a.k.a. us).
So - my assumption was correct we should see it around Christmas!
Lol I might as well load a custom rom now or wait til someone creates a custom rom based off 2.2 for the I9000. that might take awhile for the epic though, probably quicker than a official ota release from samsung.
Going on 2months with my epic now, wishing HTC or Moto would have given me a sprint andriod device with a keyboard. Typing this would have been annoying without one.

my guess would be last week in December. Merry Christmas to all
Cognition ftw.
Don't know if i'll get another samsung phone when my contract is up.

If you read the official press release, there is no mention of anything outside of UK. As usual, Engadget injected its own opinion based on mis-reading of the press release.
The press release only mentioned all carriers, inside UK, will get the release by the end of Nov.

Yes it will. But it doesn't mean we will see it here in US by the end of Nov. 2010.
Regarding Froyo on US carriers: Samsung USA is saying:
@SamsungMobileUS Re: Froyo release in November statement came from SamsungUK. Froyo for US SGS will be avail this year http://ow.ly/2Xce8
So if it's not November, that only leaves December...
As it stands my personal opinion is that US carriers would start rolling it out at the beginning of the new year.

That's how I feel. I had an iphone for 2.5 years and absolutely loved it. It worked flawlessly. I had it jailbroken so I could customize the crap out of it with winterboard and run all the unapproved apps in cydia. But, me being me, I was a little bored and just wanted something differentso I sprang for a Captivate. Its a decent enough phone, but I'll never get another samjunk phone again, they are just crap with software updates. I'm not even sure I'll ever get another android phone. It's not nearly as open as everyone wants to believe. Here it's been several months and there's no custom roms out for it yet. I wouldnt especially call cognition too custom, its a stock samsung rom that's had some tweaks done to it. I'm stuck with this phone for 21 more months until my contract is up, I hate to have to spend $500-600 for another phone off contract. I'm really hoping samsung gets their act together because 21 months is a long ways to go. And it appears that handset makers are doing their best to really lock the phones down. The motos now have e-fuse, the new G2 is even worse. You can only temporarily root it, when you reboot it, it loads the OS back from a hidden partition so its like it was new. The only truly open phone is the N1.
I probably am in the minority here..but oh well..won't be the first time.
I would rather have something work than not. Since my Captivate works great..I can patiently wait till FroYo is released here especially if they are going to make sure it is done right this time. December isn't that far off,and I am sure it will be December possibly January before it is rolled out in the US for the Captivate..
I think many need to chill out and take the wait & see attitude. Let the other carriers get it first, that way most of the bugs will be worked out or at least known so we can see what is already wrong if anything before we install it.
Hell..the trend is never going to change for the manufactures to defeat what the developers cook up.If they can lock the phones down and force us to all have Iphones..then that is what they are going to do. I blame Steve Jobs at Apple for this and his strangle hold on AT&T..and I honestly think it is going to get worse...So..I see the other US carriers getting it before AT&T and releasing it.
I've learned from the school of Hard Knocks never to rush out and get the latest & greatest new thing anymore when it first hits the shelves..since almost every manufacturer is using it's customer based as BETA testers..
I know with every release elsewhere..it just gives the developers time and more code to use to build really good stable roms..not just patches and have them work greater than they already do.The Cappy has only been out for 3-4 months..give them all time..to get it right..

I keep going both ways on this. Yes Engadget read more into it. The press release is vague though:
The Android 2.2 software is being fully tested with UK operators and the upgrade will be available in the UK from early November. We expect all operator versions of the software to be fully tested and downloadable by the end of November.

The way i read it is, that it is being tested in the UK Now, and will be available early November - all UK operators should be done by the end of November. It seems very UK centric.
I think we need to wait for separate carrier announcements in the US - the phones are different enough that each carrier will have their own schedule.
EDIT Samsung Twitter site confirmed this statement is UK only. They reference July quote that all US Samsung Galaxy S phones will get Froyo "This year".

So your choices are go back to iPhone, spend the dough for an AT&T N1, or keep your Samsung and ***** for another 21 mos.?
Who knows though? Maybe Samsung will release the 2.2 OTA and get it right?
Whether they release the upgrade in a month, two months, or three months - in the big scheme of things what's the difference? We've lived our lives for this long without Froyo, so big deal if it's delayed beyond whatever expectations have been created.
Furthermore, people who believe that Froyo will be bug-free and will be a remedy for all ills afflicting the Captivate are kidding themselves. Perfection (or even that which is close to perfection) is ever-elusive.
I don't know what people ***** so bad about this. There is a leaked froyo rom, PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE. Also why do you want them to rush some buggy crap? Let them do there thing. You have a Froyo rom, so just wait till they iron out all the kinks and let them give us a solid Froyo rom.

[Q] Just got Shield (32GB), It has 4.4.2, says OTA "1.21" available...

Hi folks,
My Shield 32 GB just arrived and is charged up. I've signed on with a google account and done nothing else.
I will eventually root it but want to put it through its paces for a month or so first.
It arrived with KK 4.4.2 (wow! so old!) on it. It offers an OTA update from October 2014. Says it is OTA 1.21. I've seen LOTS of other OTA numbers much later around these forums. Do I have to take the 1.21 OTA before I can get to the more recent ones?
And, by taking the OTA, am I doing anything irreversible that I probably shouldn't do, since I'm eventually a rooting and maybe ROMing kind of guy?
Thanks. I've read up and it looks like I probably want to go all the way to the 5.1 release, once they sort out the speaker-killing bug. But for the moment I'd like to make sure I'm not missing anything before taking the OTA.
Thanks!
Marc
I decided to download the update after I successfully activated the device on AT&T's cellular network.
That was a bit of a hassle... couldn't do it from the device (the ATT app said something about incompatibility with the SIM card), the PC online web registration wouldn't accept it because NVidia Shield wasn't listed in the device types, and it took the efforts of 3 ATT folks to get me activated. First one passed me to the second one when he found out it was a device not purchased from ATT (but... dude... here's the SIM and IMEI number that's all you need...), the second one set me up and told me to call another number to accept terms and conditions. Did that, still no joy, found the default APN isn't set up right. Fixed that, still no joy, eventually talked to person 3 that found out they didn't attach a data plan to the device when they set it up... as part of my family shared data account. Duh.
Anyway, I applied the 1.21 and then it prompted me to download the 2.1 update to Android 5.01. It has downloaded. I think I want to copy it over to my PC before I let it apply.
Marc
Hmmm. Poked around and found the 1.21 update but not the 2.1 full LTE OTA. Perhaps I'd need root to get at the files. Oh well. I can always download it if I need it. Applying the 2.1 update now.
And I've made it all the way to the 2.2.1 hotfix. Seems stable enough for the moment.
I understand OTA 3.0 got pulled; so I guess I'll be staying on Lollipop 5.01 until they release the fix.
It's a bit surprising that I had to do all the updates sequentially and that there wasn't any direct-to-the-latest. But it didn't take long. I wonder if all these OTAs are clogging up my memory somewhere?
OK, on to exploration!
Marc
the update got pulled indeed, caused all kind of problems, including blown speakers
nvidia employee told us on nvidia forum they would release a new OTA 3.1, targeted end of june
lastest news: it's now targeted end of july....

Marshmallow when

So when do u guys think we will get marshmallow sense it looks like its out for the 815 I think
So do u guys think us att uses that got stuck on PR firmware will get update
It will come when it comes. Probably December or early next year. It won't be when ATT get its update. I could see it coming before as a test ground in PR. However, we would need the kdz. Also someone likely would have to make a rooted image if possible. So your looking at a while. Don't quote me, but maybe February.
