rooting without data plan - G1 Android Development

hi, this is my first post on xda-developer and i need some help
my g1 currently does not have a data plan (i use wifi) and running RC 33.
since rooting requires the phone to be downgraded into stock RC 29 this require activation g1 again and i cant do that since i dont have a data plan.
is there a way i can still root without reactivating my phone (i dont care about a wipe just i cant activate it again)
thanks

any of the builds based off the ADP release should let you skip registration... a feature of the ADP from the start
Also use the info here (STICKY AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.....) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316 for when you first flash to rc29

so what builds are based off the adp relase sorry im not very good with these kinds of things and i have a t-mobile g1 would an adp build work for mine too?
and dont i need root first to get these builds?
thanks

all of the current cupcake mods are built off ADP... it says so in their title..... try at least looking before asking.....
yes once it is rooted your phone will take ADP firmware or any version of RC firmware...

Doesn't skipping registration make the phone unstable?
Can we use the link you posted for ADP 1.5 registration?

Getting confused, I have RC30 (Rooted), Going to update

Hey all, Ill only ask this once, (Since after this time, Ill know for future updates and be on the right path =) )since this G1 is so new dev wise, its getting confusing when im studying everything all at once and only updated rooted once to the custom RC30. I saw the newer update is RC33, now when I apply that, is it required EACH TIME to wipe the device? Im asking cause it would be a pain to reinstall each app I had installed there to begin with. I know I wiped the 1st time I rooted and updated. So just wanted to check.
Also whats the new additions in these updates? Any good changelogs out there? I kinda like keeping the Tmobile US stuff on mine, but root access is awesome. =)
Thanks for any update tips out there atm.
Edit, My G1 is still on Firmware 1.1 is that a seperate update or how is everyone updating that with the custom stuff? Thanks. (And do I need that FW update before going RC33?)
Nope, you won't lose anything when you upgrade the firmware normally. Going from JF RC30 to JF RC33 should be fine
Check the stickied topic on the top of the forum to find out more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
The changelog is somewhere in there.
Thank you. =) I didnt read that one since it was talking about for UK users. Heh. Least it explained things a lil more. =DDD
What about the firmware? Seems Ill have to do the new radio too, but wondering.. is that radio one for US too or only uk? Since its in a UK thread. =/
Nah, it's not a UK topic. He just modifies the title when he adds something new. The radio should be for the US version. Just download the radio and JF RC33 and throw them on your microSD (one at a time obviously, named update.zip).
Firmware 1.1 is just like the base firmware number, you can ignore that. Firmware 1.5 (I think) is cupcake, so you get the idea.
Ok so the firmware is nothing major atm to update or would you still upset it? I havent looked into cupcake yet.
No, completely ignore the firmware number, the only numbers you want to look at are RC30, 33, etc...
Ok this is odd. I updated fine to RC33, however when I try to get back in recovery mode to apply the radio rom, it wont go into the recovery mode. It just keeps rebooting to the G1 screen when im holding the home button. Anyone seen that before or how to get back into the recovery mode?
Anyone have any ideas?

Help needed with adp

Hi,
I recently purchased a dev phone and it came with adp 1.0. I had a few questions I was hoping someone could clear for me.
1. There is an adp 1.1 official release that I can upgrade to, what is the equivalent version of the jf series? (1.43?)
2. If I wanted to update my phone (adp 1.0) to the latest in the jf series, would I have to update to adp 1.1 and then update to the jf series? Or is there a way I can do it directly?
3. What are the radio updates and do I have to install them to upgrade to adp 1.1/jf v1.42/v1.43?
4. Any links that could point me in the right direction to upgrading from adp 1.0?
Sorry if these questions have been repeated, am new to this and looking for a little direction.
Thanks in advance, any help will be greatly appreciated
All your questions are answered in the initial post here.
Hi uberingram,
Thanks, I did read through that, however was still not very clear on a few things. If you could just correct me in case I'm wrong. This is my understanding from that post.
My understanding
1. JFv1.43 Holiday is what I should be installing since it is based on ADP 1.1h and is the latest in the series
3. Since I am currently on ADP1.0, if I want to jump to JFV1.43 Holiday directly I will have to perform a wipe (since I am not going to install JFv1.31 and then upgrade)
4. To install it, I need to follow the general sequence of saving the zip file to sdcard named update.zip, boot into recovery mode, and press alt+s. Then I need to do a wipe (alt+w)
Please correct me if any of my above steps are wrong (just want to make sure before I go through with any of this).
My only question now is, should I apply the radio update (http://jf.odiness.com/RC33/RC33radio_update_testkeys.zip), and if so, is there a particular sequence in which to install it? As in radio first and then JFv1.43 or JFv1.43 first and then radio?
Thanks

I would. A lot of us that ran JF1.43ADPh used the RC33 radio.

Technically it doesn't matter but I always did it as the last step once I knew that the new build stuck and was working properly.
Edited for proper grammar.
Thanks a lot uberingram. This really helped me out. Am going to try this out now.
On an unrelated note, what I've understood is that SPL's, Radio Updates and builds are all independent of each other and can be installed in any combinations?

Yes but there are a few exceptions to that statement.
- it's advised for non rooted phones (OEM RC builds) to downgrade to RC29, install the test keys (not necessary for you) and do the SPL first.
- Some dev's here who build ROM's package radio updates with their updates. JF was nice enough to separate the radio from his builds so if you're a big ROM switcher you're not constantly flashing the radio.
But for the most part, yes, they are independent of each other.
Thanks a lot uberingram. You've helped me clarify a lot of my doubts

Haykuro nandroid backup?

Hey i tried out the Haykuro 5.0.1Gr3 and its ok the market kinda breaks it for me. but thats not what im asking about what i would like to know is these following things:
1. If i install just the Haykuro 5.0.1Gr3 , setup my programs and settings, can i make a nandroid backup of that and flash it later?
2. If there is an update i.e 5.0.2 will a wipe be needed?
3. His builds are ports from the magic to the dream. Does this matter or its kinda like same phone just added a little more and tweaked it?
4. What will be the differences from Haykuro G/H and t-mboile/adp1 Cupcake update?( that will come who knows when)
Yes i searched but didnt find these answers.
not to be rude, but all of the answers to your questions are in the forum.
no your not rude at all sometimes people just need another set of eyes if anyone can point me to the right post for my question that would make me glad

im too lazy to point u to where the answers are (trust me there out there) so ill just answer them to my best ability
1 yes u can do a nandroid back up, the nandroidbackup tool is built in to the recovery so all you have to do is back up and restore,
2 seeing as tho 5.02 is already out i do no think it required a wipe, but if ur going from a different build ie G to H or jf33 to 5.02 then i am lmost positive u need to wipe
- you can always check if the update.zip automatically wipes, just look in the update-script and look for a line (usually near the end that says: format:data if u delete this line it will not auto wipe but ur phone might hang and u will need to pull the battery and do a wipe.
3 Dont really understand this question, does what matter? does it matter that it is a build from a different phone, No, it doesn't he cooked it so that it works with the dream
4 as of now adp1 and tmobile g1 are on firmware number 1.1 magic build and cupcake builds are build 1.5 the official update will probably have more fixes because it is being updated all the time but its likely that it wont have root access like previous firmware updates
Thanx for the answers.

Cupcake Question

Now I want to put the official cupcake update on my phone, Now I dont care about my apps and settings since I can always re do them, But how could I have cupcake on my phone.. WITH it rooted and most importantly still be able to put my apps on my sd card?
I see here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462512
So by this I can root it and add the cupcake update, now when i did the apps on sd update, I used the guide that has the update.zip, so im guessing if I do the instructions above ill be able to wipe out my phone, re root it, and update it with cupcake, then all i need is to find a way to add apps on sd card, my question to u is, is there a easier way to do it like in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480582
or do I have to follow one of those really hard guides like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504235
So to clarify, i want rooted phone, cupcake and apps on sd, if someone could point me in the right way/guide to do it id be really happy
ps im not a dev so I can only follow what a guide says
no, no and no. rooted phones **CANNOT** install the official OTA updates. you will get notified but it will fail. if you want official, downgrade to rc29 using the nbh (link in my wiki) and wait for OTA updates. if you want JF update, give it more time.

SO theres no way to have root apps on sd with cupcake until JF makes his own or someone else? or is there a way to have root and sd on apps just need to find a way to have cupcake download into it?
right now all my phone is running off JF rc33 build and JF radio update and lucus apps on sd guide
As Darkrift stated ....
If you can't wait for one of the dev's here to release their custom version of the offical firmware, downgrade to RC29 and wait for the OTA update.
Now there is no telling how long it'll be before you get this update.
If you want apps 2 sd you can wait on the custom release from one of the devs here once they release the firmware you can install it and start using your apps on your sdcard.
I'm betting the dev's here will have the modded version of the firmware out before the majority of us have the OTA update pushed to us. That is what happened last time.
I'm not the most knowledgeable person here, but you simply cannot have A2SD on an official ROM from TMo, they have never supported it, and most likely won't in the future. So the only way is to get A2SD is to get one of the modded ROMs from here... none of them are OFFICIAL, but JF's release is nearly identical (even better) and has root... I see no reason to have the official ROM
Alright thanks guys, I guess Ill wait

Running Old Firmware - Need major help

Hey whatup guys.
Okay - so I got the G from my brother who had it rooted.
Here's what I know:
- JF v. 1.42
- RC 33
- Fade to blue custom theme
Now, my question is (I know it's probably been asked before, but I just can't seem to find the right topic) what would I have to do to upgrade from jf1.42 to the latest CupCake build, whether that be the "rooted" version or the "dev" version (if that makes any sense). Preferibly, the one that is soon to be OTA - as I was reading that the SDK's are released for Developers.
I'm kinda n00bish at this, so I'm not really sure of the differences between JF and ADP, so please bear with me.
Again, I want to try out the cupcake build, (I think 1.5?) but not sure how to go about doing that with my current settings.
Also, I've been reading and speculating about a few different things. Could someone explain these to me?
- Haykuro's version?
- ADP vs JF
- "Dude" or something
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
ADP is basically the dev version of the OS, doesnt include IM and all that...
JF has a modded version of the official adp1.5 same with haykuro and dude.
to upgrade to whichever build just download their buildand rename it to update.zip and blah blah blah, youll probably have to o a wipe though.

Keatonreckard,
Thanks for the response.
I think I understand it now, bu just wish to confirm:
Downloading and flashing to the new JF Version would allow me to "get" Cupcake?
Any benefits of using something else, like Haykuro or dude?
