Help needed with adp - G1 Android Development

Hi,
I recently purchased a dev phone and it came with adp 1.0. I had a few questions I was hoping someone could clear for me.
1. There is an adp 1.1 official release that I can upgrade to, what is the equivalent version of the jf series? (1.43?)
2. If I wanted to update my phone (adp 1.0) to the latest in the jf series, would I have to update to adp 1.1 and then update to the jf series? Or is there a way I can do it directly?
3. What are the radio updates and do I have to install them to upgrade to adp 1.1/jf v1.42/v1.43?
4. Any links that could point me in the right direction to upgrading from adp 1.0?
Sorry if these questions have been repeated, am new to this and looking for a little direction.
Thanks in advance, any help will be greatly appreciated

All your questions are answered in the initial post here.

Hi uberingram,
Thanks, I did read through that, however was still not very clear on a few things. If you could just correct me in case I'm wrong. This is my understanding from that post.
My understanding
1. JFv1.43 Holiday is what I should be installing since it is based on ADP 1.1h and is the latest in the series
3. Since I am currently on ADP1.0, if I want to jump to JFV1.43 Holiday directly I will have to perform a wipe (since I am not going to install JFv1.31 and then upgrade)
4. To install it, I need to follow the general sequence of saving the zip file to sdcard named update.zip, boot into recovery mode, and press alt+s. Then I need to do a wipe (alt+w)
Please correct me if any of my above steps are wrong (just want to make sure before I go through with any of this).
My only question now is, should I apply the radio update (http://jf.odiness.com/RC33/RC33radio_update_testkeys.zip), and if so, is there a particular sequence in which to install it? As in radio first and then JFv1.43 or JFv1.43 first and then radio?
Thanks

I would. A lot of us that ran JF1.43ADPh used the RC33 radio.

Technically it doesn't matter but I always did it as the last step once I knew that the new build stuck and was working properly.
Edited for proper grammar.

Thanks a lot uberingram. This really helped me out. Am going to try this out now.
On an unrelated note, what I've understood is that SPL's, Radio Updates and builds are all independent of each other and can be installed in any combinations?

Yes but there are a few exceptions to that statement.
- it's advised for non rooted phones (OEM RC builds) to downgrade to RC29, install the test keys (not necessary for you) and do the SPL first.
- Some dev's here who build ROM's package radio updates with their updates. JF was nice enough to separate the radio from his builds so if you're a big ROM switcher you're not constantly flashing the radio.
But for the most part, yes, they are independent of each other.

Thanks a lot uberingram. You've helped me clarify a lot of my doubts

Getting confused, I have RC30 (Rooted), Going to update

Hey all, Ill only ask this once, (Since after this time, Ill know for future updates and be on the right path =) )since this G1 is so new dev wise, its getting confusing when im studying everything all at once and only updated rooted once to the custom RC30. I saw the newer update is RC33, now when I apply that, is it required EACH TIME to wipe the device? Im asking cause it would be a pain to reinstall each app I had installed there to begin with. I know I wiped the 1st time I rooted and updated. So just wanted to check.
Also whats the new additions in these updates? Any good changelogs out there? I kinda like keeping the Tmobile US stuff on mine, but root access is awesome. =)
Thanks for any update tips out there atm.
Edit, My G1 is still on Firmware 1.1 is that a seperate update or how is everyone updating that with the custom stuff? Thanks. (And do I need that FW update before going RC33?)
Nope, you won't lose anything when you upgrade the firmware normally. Going from JF RC30 to JF RC33 should be fine
Check the stickied topic on the top of the forum to find out more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
The changelog is somewhere in there.
Thank you. =) I didnt read that one since it was talking about for UK users. Heh. Least it explained things a lil more. =DDD
What about the firmware? Seems Ill have to do the new radio too, but wondering.. is that radio one for US too or only uk? Since its in a UK thread. =/
Nah, it's not a UK topic. He just modifies the title when he adds something new. The radio should be for the US version. Just download the radio and JF RC33 and throw them on your microSD (one at a time obviously, named update.zip).
Firmware 1.1 is just like the base firmware number, you can ignore that. Firmware 1.5 (I think) is cupcake, so you get the idea.
Ok so the firmware is nothing major atm to update or would you still upset it? I havent looked into cupcake yet.
No, completely ignore the firmware number, the only numbers you want to look at are RC30, 33, etc...
Ok this is odd. I updated fine to RC33, however when I try to get back in recovery mode to apply the radio rom, it wont go into the recovery mode. It just keeps rebooting to the G1 screen when im holding the home button. Anyone seen that before or how to get back into the recovery mode?
Anyone have any ideas?

JF1.41 to JF1.42

I'm a total noob! so don't flame me!
I just rooted my phone the other night, following the gizmodo site instructions carefully to obtain root and the multi touch function (had no sweats and no troubles! ).
The version was JF1.41, my question is that if i update to JF1.42 will i still have the features that JF1.41 offer? and i just downloaded the JF updater from the market and wondering if anyone can tell me if that ish is legit or do i have to update it to JF1.42 manually?
THANKS GUYS!! Any help would be greatly appreciated
as long as you don't wipe when you apply the upgrade then you should keep everything. I'm not sure what differences there are between 1.41 and 1.42 though, there's probably a thread stickyied at the top detailing them
Is it JF 1.41 without RC33? In that case, you would be getting new features in JF1.42.

Flashing the Radio for Noobs

I keep seeing on this and other forums that noobs are unsure about how to flash radio versions. They also don't know about the double reboot, and think they bricked their phone when it loads the radio. I am posting this thread to answer those questions, hoping that it will stop a lot of the same question over and over again in the other threads.
1. To flash your radio, rename the file to update.zip, or just update if your computer doesn't show file extensions.
2. Put the file onto the root of your SD card. (If you have a different update.zip on there, you will have to remove or overwrite the old update.zip).
3. Boot into recovery and hit alt S
4. Reboot your phone. It will reboot twice. The first time, you will see the recovery page for a split second, then you will see a strange screen. The screen will stay on for a minute or two while it writes the radio image, so don't freak out, then your phone will reboot normally.
5. You can upgrade the radio either after, or before you flash the firmware, it doesn't matter which you do first.
6. Yes, if you are going to a completely new firmware version, for example, 1.0 - 1.1 - 1.5, you will have to change your radio to the compatible version, or you will have problems. The same is true for downgrading. You will probably have to downgrade your radio if going back to an older version of firmware.
7. No, you don't have to change radio versions if staying on the same version, example RC33 1.1 to ADP 1.1, or 1.5 H to 1.5 G.
Those are the only questions I can think of at the moment. If i screwed something up, or forgot to add something, let me know!
Looks like this is good info (Was unsure myself, so this helps), not sure why no one else would say thanks.
Thanks .
Thanks for leting me know it helped! It quickly disappeared into the depths of unanswered threads, so I figured nobody would ever see it.
thanks
This helped me also, thanks for breaking it down so well.
is there a definitive list of radio versions for which country etc? also dl links would be handy

Since you will only be flashing the radio when you flash the rom, you should use the radio specified on the page where you got your rom.
Since there are so many versions of Android out now, and they only work correctly with the radio which was built for that version, I didn't want to post links and have people downloading the wrong version, then wondering why they have so many problems.
do i hear music with his radio update?

Rephrase that...?
No, no music. The radio update has something to do with connecting to a signal. (I'm not really up on all of this technology, so I can't give you a more detailed explanation). I do know that many times, if you have the wrong radio version, you won't be able to stay connected though.

rooting without data plan

hi, this is my first post on xda-developer and i need some help
my g1 currently does not have a data plan (i use wifi) and running RC 33.
since rooting requires the phone to be downgraded into stock RC 29 this require activation g1 again and i cant do that since i dont have a data plan.
is there a way i can still root without reactivating my phone (i dont care about a wipe just i cant activate it again)
thanks
any of the builds based off the ADP release should let you skip registration... a feature of the ADP from the start
Also use the info here (STICKY AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.....) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316 for when you first flash to rc29
so what builds are based off the adp relase sorry im not very good with these kinds of things and i have a t-mobile g1 would an adp build work for mine too?
and dont i need root first to get these builds?
thanks
all of the current cupcake mods are built off ADP... it says so in their title..... try at least looking before asking.....
yes once it is rooted your phone will take ADP firmware or any version of RC firmware...

Doesn't skipping registration make the phone unstable?
Can we use the link you posted for ADP 1.5 registration?

Restore magic to Out of box condition

Hope someone can help with a few things
i have a UK Magic on vodafone, updated to crb43
Then I wanted to try the google ion rom (not haykuro, the image released elsewhere) as it was faster and had voide dialing
I used the new-recovery to install it, booting it from fastboot rather than flashing it. I made a nandroid backup first.
Anyways, I wanted to go back to default rom and OTA updates, so thought i'd restore my backup.
\
I've done this, but had to flash the new haykuro spl...
My question is will i get OTA updates with this SPL?
I cant find the stock spl anywhere for download, whats the hard spl - does it exist for the magic or just the dream???
Basically i just want the simplicity i started with not bothered with root.
really? no one knows?

Hi dazcox5181,
The answer is a few posts below yours.
I haven't tried myself as I'm very happy with my rooted Magic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3857151&postcount=10
Thanks, I thought that might have something to do with it.
Now back to Voda system, data and recovery with the spl linked above. Should that now get me back to being tied to vodafones OTA updates?
I'm new to Android, so I'm not sure how much of a restriction / or not this is? Are OTA updates common/regular/likely to add anything worthwhile (well, I guess cupcake was...but you probably all had that anyway)
Thanks, with a bit more research I finally stumbled on the solution.
Had to restore to crb17 from the link on the thread above, and then flash the original recovery in fastboot, then the OTA update to crb43 worked perfectly!
Phew!
I'll probably re-root sooner or later, can't help but play around on this device :0 so much more to play with than my iPhone he he
Apologies if this thread annoys anyone who says I should have searched better to start with, I did, and read many threads but theres a lot to take in!
Anyways, maybe someone else has same problem and this might have helped
and to make it easier for future searchers could you compile a detailed list of step-by-step instructions for doing this? Could be handy for a wiki somewhere
OK, will add details later, but briefly
To restore to factory:
1) Download and follow instructions to flash the crios spl (one with older version reported)
2) Download and follow included instructions to flash the SFR CRB17 image using included recovery.img (boot dont flash it)
3) Download and flash original recovery image (again from crios) can be found at thread linked earlier in this one.
Reboot, and go through usual setup etc OTA update will be on its way
Be sure to remove any update.zip from your SD before attempting ther OTA update, ie before first boot if possible
It's actually really easy now I know how, and took about 20min in total (probably less)
Where do you get the SFR CRB17?
