JF1.41 to JF1.42 - G1 Android Development

I'm a total noob! so don't flame me!
I just rooted my phone the other night, following the gizmodo site instructions carefully to obtain root and the multi touch function (had no sweats and no troubles! ).
The version was JF1.41, my question is that if i update to JF1.42 will i still have the features that JF1.41 offer? and i just downloaded the JF updater from the market and wondering if anyone can tell me if that ish is legit or do i have to update it to JF1.42 manually?
THANKS GUYS!! Any help would be greatly appreciated

as long as you don't wipe when you apply the upgrade then you should keep everything. I'm not sure what differences there are between 1.41 and 1.42 though, there's probably a thread stickyied at the top detailing them

Is it JF 1.41 without RC33? In that case, you would be getting new features in JF1.42.

Clarification

Alright I just want to make sure I did this right:
I followed the step-by-step to rc 30 with root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443797
It was written for JFv1.3, but its now JFv1.41
So I never installed JFv1.3, I just went straight to JFv1.41
Is there any problem with this? do I need to do a "wipe" or am I fine?
The second quesiton:
what is adp 1.0 and adp 1.1? Do I need to install that ALONG side jFv1.41 or does it overwrite jfv1.41?
Thanks for helping the new guy
Try it without wiping and it doesn't start then wipe it. No big deal. The adp is the dev phone build of android. It's missing things like AIM and MSN in the IM client but it is running a new version of android. RC30 is the T-mobile version
I went from the stock RC30 to Rc29, then to ADP1.1 without going to 1.31. I did need to do a wipe, but everything went perfectly, and my "new" phone is wonderful! I'm glad I did ADP1.1, because it allows you to bypass that annoying register thing when you first turn on the phone.
can you do adp with a normal g1 phone?
and when I went from 30 to 29 it wiped my phone, but when I went to modded 30 and to JFv1.41 there was no wipe... is that supposed to be right?

Yes. it can
Now the big question,
ADP 1.1
OR
JFv1.41
What are the benefits of each... I know its a braod question, so dont be afraid to keep it brief as an answer.
Thanks
If you use one of JF's images they will all be JFv1.41. the real question is RC30 or ADP1.1 or RC8.

Root User on RC33 Firmware1.1

I have by my G1 in Austria at T-Mobile. I´m not shure about RC33 but i have Firmware1.1 BuildNumber123099 and KernelVersion2.6.15-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #6!
Now i need help for going Root User. I did all things with Terminal Emulator and Telnet.apk I Have install the Android SDK with emulator and adb. and this all for only one - being a root user on my G1 and nothing runs!!!! I have allso a HTC Kaiser and i flash him with soooo much roms without problems and with big help from xda-developers!
Now i know only here i can find a help for my problem!
Sorry for my english but i am from austria and writing in english is very hard for my!!!
I Think im not the first or the last one with this problem! And all who by the G1 at 2009 have these Firmware. So we have to find a way!!!!! PLEASE.
THX for searching

I come also from Austria/Carinthia and I ordered my G1 these days. I also hope that we will one day be able to root our German G1 with Firmware 1.1. But the only thing we can do is wait and offer our help to people, who know more of the matter. So lets drink tea and wait.
By the way, where from Austria do you come???
I´m from Salzburgand i dont know "Carinthia" The Problem with the new G1 is that T-Mobile will close the backdoor with the root user and so she installed this new Firmware. I´m so angry because i like the RC30 on my G1 also for wlanrouter on my G1. So i hope we find anyone who can help us!

I'm not sure if the instructions found at the link below, work for downgrading from RC33
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
They worked for downgrading from RC8 / RC30 to get RC29 and root access.
Out of interest if you use those instructions with RC33 please post your results so others know if it is possible.

I don't get it.. 'root' was patched out RC-30 (ie telnet hack fixed), so why is RC33 different ? I doubt they fixed the bootloader.

I assume the bootloader for RC33 is untouched hence the root exploit via downgrading should work and dirtyjunkie will get the root access he/she requires.

Carinthia is Englisch for Kärnten. I think everyone knows Kärnten, because of our Landeshauptmann Jörg Haider, who died in a car accident.

Thanks for the info andonnguyen, this is good news as it looks as if google/tmobile are not actively trying to prevent people getting root using the downgrade method.
Has any german/austrian user tested the downgrade from RC33 to RC29? It would be great to hear if it worked.
Do I have to wipe it after that?
Can't test it yet, because I have an android dev phone
From what i heard there should be a way to downgrade form this Build (is this Build the same as RC33?) and maybe JF already guided some guy through the entire process... at least i think i heard so
i'd also be happy to try this, but i could not find a Tutorial or anything else yet... I'm also an Austrian User with FW 1.1 and really d'like to get root access

here is a tutorial for downgrading:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Root_For_RC30
Right, but this tutorial is for downgrading the rc30 and not this "special" european build 123099
European G1 has build 123099, RC33 is 126986.
ok, didn't know that... thanx!

If you mean, if you have the oi language in german or english afterwards: of course it's english after downgrading and aupgrading. You put on english firmware with that method.
If you mean, if the downgrade works with your german build, then try it an tell us. I don'T think, anything severe could happen either it works or it doesn't.

How to go from RC33 from RC29 manually without root?

How to downgrade from Rc33
Ok...I updated to RC33. Didn't know before I updated that I wouldn't be able to go from RC33 to root. So now I need to downgrade.
Can anyone help me downgrade from RC33 to RC29? Or maybe even RC33 to RC30? I searched and couldn't find anything on this but did see someone post that JF walked someone thru it recently....how ever I can not find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I been in that thread....it's instructions to downgrade from RC30....not RC33.
And I have been going backwards in that thread from the latest posts for about 10 pages now and see nothing about downgrading from RC33.
Doesn't matter what rom you have installed as of now.
You need to follow the instructions and then pick which rom betters you.
Or even try going straight to 30 by renaming it, update, and install it in recovery mode.
Ok....I missed one small word....RC30 and above...
Thanks...in the process of trying to gain root now...
To make it clear for me, is the old downgrading process with a new german RC33 G1 still possible or will it fail because of an new SPL?

Think he means he upgraded to OTA RC33. Anyway like the previous posters have already indicated, the NBH file downgrades OTA RC33 as well.
ah i see, my mistake.
Hey guys I have two quick questions:
1. I have an OTA rc33 (stock) update on my phone I just received today, in order to root my g1, I will need to downgrade to the stock rc29. It's imposible just to get my phone rooted straight from rc33?
2. If the first question is true. After I downgrade and rooted the rc29, can I just download the latest jfv1.41 rc33 (developer version) ? Or I would need to update the rooted rc30 first in order to get the jfv1.41 rc33.
Your kindly help and suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Correct you need to downgrade to RC29 first for root.

For RC29 you can install JF's Modded version of RC33

Just One Question:
Is it still possible to downgrade with an GERMAN G1 with the original Bootloader installed on it, or is the security hole fixed which allows downgrading with the nbh File. Please do someone answer me that question please
I tried root but had problems went back to RC29 stock but now I would like to go to RC33. What do I need to do to manually update?
Viper
Links to manually update are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479571
i manually installed rc33 ota update and so i decided root my g1 then i get stuck on the colorful boot screen.
as the instructions on downgrading from rc30 i suspect it would be the same on a g1 with rc33.
im not sure if the formatting was done correct but i did the following:
on my eee linux netbook i typed
umnount /dev/sdd1
mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdd1
the zip file contained a file named "DREAIMG.nbh" the instructions quoted the file name as "DREAMIMG.nbh" so i tried it with both names and i get the same thing.

Getting confused, I have RC30 (Rooted), Going to update

Hey all, Ill only ask this once, (Since after this time, Ill know for future updates and be on the right path =) )since this G1 is so new dev wise, its getting confusing when im studying everything all at once and only updated rooted once to the custom RC30. I saw the newer update is RC33, now when I apply that, is it required EACH TIME to wipe the device? Im asking cause it would be a pain to reinstall each app I had installed there to begin with. I know I wiped the 1st time I rooted and updated. So just wanted to check.
Also whats the new additions in these updates? Any good changelogs out there? I kinda like keeping the Tmobile US stuff on mine, but root access is awesome. =)
Thanks for any update tips out there atm.
Edit, My G1 is still on Firmware 1.1 is that a seperate update or how is everyone updating that with the custom stuff? Thanks. (And do I need that FW update before going RC33?)
Nope, you won't lose anything when you upgrade the firmware normally. Going from JF RC30 to JF RC33 should be fine
Check the stickied topic on the top of the forum to find out more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
The changelog is somewhere in there.
Thank you. =) I didnt read that one since it was talking about for UK users. Heh. Least it explained things a lil more. =DDD
What about the firmware? Seems Ill have to do the new radio too, but wondering.. is that radio one for US too or only uk? Since its in a UK thread. =/
Nah, it's not a UK topic. He just modifies the title when he adds something new. The radio should be for the US version. Just download the radio and JF RC33 and throw them on your microSD (one at a time obviously, named update.zip).
Firmware 1.1 is just like the base firmware number, you can ignore that. Firmware 1.5 (I think) is cupcake, so you get the idea.
Ok so the firmware is nothing major atm to update or would you still upset it? I havent looked into cupcake yet.
No, completely ignore the firmware number, the only numbers you want to look at are RC30, 33, etc...
Ok this is odd. I updated fine to RC33, however when I try to get back in recovery mode to apply the radio rom, it wont go into the recovery mode. It just keeps rebooting to the G1 screen when im holding the home button. Anyone seen that before or how to get back into the recovery mode?
Anyone have any ideas?

Help needed with adp

Hi,
I recently purchased a dev phone and it came with adp 1.0. I had a few questions I was hoping someone could clear for me.
1. There is an adp 1.1 official release that I can upgrade to, what is the equivalent version of the jf series? (1.43?)
2. If I wanted to update my phone (adp 1.0) to the latest in the jf series, would I have to update to adp 1.1 and then update to the jf series? Or is there a way I can do it directly?
3. What are the radio updates and do I have to install them to upgrade to adp 1.1/jf v1.42/v1.43?
4. Any links that could point me in the right direction to upgrading from adp 1.0?
Sorry if these questions have been repeated, am new to this and looking for a little direction.
Thanks in advance, any help will be greatly appreciated
All your questions are answered in the initial post here.
Hi uberingram,
Thanks, I did read through that, however was still not very clear on a few things. If you could just correct me in case I'm wrong. This is my understanding from that post.
My understanding
1. JFv1.43 Holiday is what I should be installing since it is based on ADP 1.1h and is the latest in the series
3. Since I am currently on ADP1.0, if I want to jump to JFV1.43 Holiday directly I will have to perform a wipe (since I am not going to install JFv1.31 and then upgrade)
4. To install it, I need to follow the general sequence of saving the zip file to sdcard named update.zip, boot into recovery mode, and press alt+s. Then I need to do a wipe (alt+w)
Please correct me if any of my above steps are wrong (just want to make sure before I go through with any of this).
My only question now is, should I apply the radio update (http://jf.odiness.com/RC33/RC33radio_update_testkeys.zip), and if so, is there a particular sequence in which to install it? As in radio first and then JFv1.43 or JFv1.43 first and then radio?
Thanks

Technically it doesn't matter but I always did it as the last step once I knew that the new build stuck and was working properly.
Edited for proper grammar.
Thanks a lot uberingram. This really helped me out. Am going to try this out now.
On an unrelated note, what I've understood is that SPL's, Radio Updates and builds are all independent of each other and can be installed in any combinations?

Yes but there are a few exceptions to that statement.
- it's advised for non rooted phones (OEM RC builds) to downgrade to RC29, install the test keys (not necessary for you) and do the SPL first.
- Some dev's here who build ROM's package radio updates with their updates. JF was nice enough to separate the radio from his builds so if you're a big ROM switcher you're not constantly flashing the radio.
But for the most part, yes, they are independent of each other.
Thanks a lot uberingram. You've helped me clarify a lot of my doubts
