Clarification - G1 Android Development

Alright I just want to make sure I did this right:
I followed the step-by-step to rc 30 with root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443797
It was written for JFv1.3, but its now JFv1.41
So I never installed JFv1.3, I just went straight to JFv1.41
Is there any problem with this? do I need to do a "wipe" or am I fine?
The second quesiton:
what is adp 1.0 and adp 1.1? Do I need to install that ALONG side jFv1.41 or does it overwrite jfv1.41?
Thanks for helping the new guy

Try it without wiping and it doesn't start then wipe it. No big deal. The adp is the dev phone build of android. It's missing things like AIM and MSN in the IM client but it is running a new version of android. RC30 is the T-mobile version

I went from the stock RC30 to Rc29, then to ADP1.1 without going to 1.31. I did need to do a wipe, but everything went perfectly, and my "new" phone is wonderful! I'm glad I did ADP1.1, because it allows you to bypass that annoying register thing when you first turn on the phone.

can you do adp with a normal g1 phone?
and when I went from 30 to 29 it wiped my phone, but when I went to modded 30 and to JFv1.41 there was no wipe... is that supposed to be right?

i haven't wiped the phone since i gained root with RC29

Good to know! Seems like im inthe same place, the guide says your phone gets wiped twice but mine only did once.
Now only need to know if ADP can be installed on a normal g1 I am assuming no

Yes. it can

Now the big question,
ADP 1.1
OR
JFv1.41
What are the benefits of each... I know its a braod question, so dont be afraid to keep it brief as an answer.
Thanks

If you use one of JF's images they will all be JFv1.41. the real question is RC30 or ADP1.1 or RC8.

total n00b question

i had a G1 that i had rooted and installed a ton of apps to the sd card. im taking it back in favor of an ADP.. if i flash my nandroid backup from the G1 to the ADP am i being stupid? is there anyway to restore the state my G1 was in to the ADP without losing the purpose of the ADP ?
As I understand it, although I'm also a n00b so correct me if I'm wrong:
The only difference between the ADP phone and the stock G1 is that it is set up to allow any firmware to run on the phone, instead of just firmware signed with the t-mobile cryptographic key. I mean, functional difference, obviously the ADP back panel has a design on it and whatnot.
So you would be able to restore from the nandroid backup to your ADP phone.
However, if you've rooted your G1 and swapped out the bootloader, you could just install the engineering bootloader and the ADP firmware, and then your G1 would become an ADP, so why spend the money?
You might want to wait for confirmation from someone more knowledgeable before you act on this info
i had already paid the 399 for the g1 anyway, my current contract was still in effect until sep 2010 i believe.. and the discount only got it at 349. so i figured if i spent the other $50 its my phone outright and they could unlock it, but they still gave me **** about it (ive been with tmobile since 2000, and from what i hear you only need to be with them 3 months to get an unlock code). so being a developer 1/2 way through my first android app, i decided to get the adp and return the g1 so i get the more unique phone anyway .
btw. after rooting and applying the updates the g1 is still simlocked to tmobile
Y not keep both?
ADP for testing and G1 for all day use?
Thats what i would do.
To your question, i do not hink you can transfer an image from a G1 to an ADP.
Might be luck too pull it off from G1 to a G1 or ADP to a ADP.

yep, you can just reflash the ADP firmware.
there is no difference what-so-ever, hardware wise, between the G1 and the ADP version except the funky backplate.

i'm almost 100% positive you can, as the phones are identical in terms of hardware.

i flashed the G1 to the ADP to get my apps off, and run a backup from "mybackup" reflashed my ADP firmware back on and restored the backup from the mybackup app and its like it was my old phone. a few apps dont work because of google blocking apps on unlocked phones, but other than that its good.

Getting confused, I have RC30 (Rooted), Going to update

Hey all, Ill only ask this once, (Since after this time, Ill know for future updates and be on the right path =) )since this G1 is so new dev wise, its getting confusing when im studying everything all at once and only updated rooted once to the custom RC30. I saw the newer update is RC33, now when I apply that, is it required EACH TIME to wipe the device? Im asking cause it would be a pain to reinstall each app I had installed there to begin with. I know I wiped the 1st time I rooted and updated. So just wanted to check.
Also whats the new additions in these updates? Any good changelogs out there? I kinda like keeping the Tmobile US stuff on mine, but root access is awesome. =)
Thanks for any update tips out there atm.
Edit, My G1 is still on Firmware 1.1 is that a seperate update or how is everyone updating that with the custom stuff? Thanks. (And do I need that FW update before going RC33?)
Nope, you won't lose anything when you upgrade the firmware normally. Going from JF RC30 to JF RC33 should be fine
Check the stickied topic on the top of the forum to find out more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
The changelog is somewhere in there.
Thank you. =) I didnt read that one since it was talking about for UK users. Heh. Least it explained things a lil more. =DDD
What about the firmware? Seems Ill have to do the new radio too, but wondering.. is that radio one for US too or only uk? Since its in a UK thread. =/
Nah, it's not a UK topic. He just modifies the title when he adds something new. The radio should be for the US version. Just download the radio and JF RC33 and throw them on your microSD (one at a time obviously, named update.zip).
Firmware 1.1 is just like the base firmware number, you can ignore that. Firmware 1.5 (I think) is cupcake, so you get the idea.
Ok so the firmware is nothing major atm to update or would you still upset it? I havent looked into cupcake yet.
No, completely ignore the firmware number, the only numbers you want to look at are RC30, 33, etc...
Ok this is odd. I updated fine to RC33, however when I try to get back in recovery mode to apply the radio rom, it wont go into the recovery mode. It just keeps rebooting to the G1 screen when im holding the home button. Anyone seen that before or how to get back into the recovery mode?
Anyone have any ideas?

Issues going from UK JF-RC9 to JF-RC33

So im just wondering are there any issues in doing this??
Im assuming that i would have to possibly update my Radio as well but im just wondering is there any downside to doing this?? im already rooted and the G1 is (currently) on a clean install of RC9 with nothing installed
so is there anything stopping me getting an RC33 image and flashing right at this second??

Good to go. Just remember to wipe your /data since you're changing the build region (Alt+W in the recovery tool).
aww sweet !! gives me something to do whilst passing time in the office
Since its JF's RC9 anyway do i need to bother regaining root or shall i just leave it as is with the recovery.img and the update.zip on the SDCard??
You already have root (JF RC9) and your target build (JF RC33) already has root, so you don't need to do anything. Just place the update.zip in the sdcard and get it on.
Followed Quoted and Done!!
Sorry for the newbish-ness,,,, mmmmm RC33,,,,, mmmmmm no change (more themes lmao)
don't forget to change your sig. I'm DLing the RC33 myself now that I know it works. BTW, which didi you go to, 1.42 or 1.43? And do 1.42 themes work with 1.43?

Im not sure about themes as its only just finished, but all is working fine, just installing some apps to keep me going till later on and then ill give themes a bash
i grabbed the 1.42 from here;
http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/02/11/jfv143/
and i also go the buildenvironment from there too,,,, just incase a custom boot image takes my fancy
Ok using Astro i've managed to install some of my apps from the SD Card and they are all working quite nicely
Additionally the Wifi Tether App is installed,, but cant check that till i get in from the office
Awesome. I just did this ti mine, and all is working on mine as well. I installed the 1.42 Rc33 aero theme as well. Looking good.
Thats how we Brits roll!! lmao

I didn't do a wipe and was fine. I DID do a Nandroid before, though.
Wipe apparently isn't always necessary but I was stuck on the 'Android' screen because i didn't do a wipe. i say do it to be safe.
Yeah a wipe isn't always a must but its highly recommended when switching to a new build.

Help!! I run into the same problem over and over again

thanks alot bro it helped alot
jf 1.5 problems
I just flashed the phone by bringing it back to rc 29 doing the root hack method.
Then download the jf 1.5 from his blog don't use jf updater.
Flash the radio image first.
Then flash like you would if you where doing rc 33 no need to to flash rc 33 before going to 1.5.
This method works every time for me
No need to use fastboot or adb they just confuse newbs trying to root their phone
