Can't access system recovery utility - G1 Android Development

Here's the thing;
I updated from JF1.41 to JF1.42 (RC33) thinking it'd go as smoothly as previous updates. It did. Then I went to update to 1.5 (TheDudesCupcake0.8)
This is the problem. I cannot access the system recovery utility in order to update. When I press home and the end-call button to boot it up, it just hangs on the G1 splash screen.
I have just charged it if that matters.

just follow the original gain-root steps to reflash the recovery parition with recovery.img from jf rc33 build.

HTC boot recovery mode help

htc hero - SPRINT model
I've succesfully "one-click" rooted my phone. (i followed unlockr)
I succesfully dropped the fresh 1.1 "update.zip" file onto my SD card.
I then booted to "Fastboot mode" using the "down-volume + power" method.
I proceed to click "home" for recovery mode.
My phone hits a hiccup and gets stuck at a black screen with the text "htc" logo in the middle of the screen. It does not proceed to screen to allow me to run "update.zip" to flash the new fresh1.1
I don't have a hero, but could that just be the stock recovery screen? You might need to flash a custom recovery for your device.
Well, watching this video (Cant post)youtube.com/watch?v=hdmkTFAG3PM
at time = 4:08 is the exact part where my screen is locked at.
Its not bricked or anything. I can still boot and it runs the original OS (android 1.5)
I just followed your steps and mine sat on the black screen for a few seconds, but then works fine. You did answer a question I had about how to get to RA though, so thanks for that. Did you boot once before trying to go to recovery mode. I know the fresh site says it can take up to 5 min for the first boot.
RA - 1.5.2
Fresh - 2.0d
I waited for approx 4-5 min. Still, it hung at that htc logo screen.
I exactly followed the steps. After I had flashed the recovery image, I immediately proceeded to power down the phone. Then, I pressed downvolume+home, and entered into HBOOT mode. I pressed home for recovery. Still, no luck. I followed these steps exactly, downloaded the exact files, placed exactly on sdcard. Still hangs out that logo screen and does not proceed to the recovery screen.
Before I run the recovery, should I press HOME+POWER and completely wipe/reset my phone? Then I have to take out battery, Press DOWNVOLUME+POWER and enter into recovery mode? (In the instructional video, this is NOT DONE.)

Might I direct you towards a new post?
I did HOME+POWER after flashing the recovery Image (which should take you to the RA recovery. After you whipe and flash your ROM if you do this it will show the HTC screen that just whipes data and you have to follow the method you listed in your post.
These are the exact steps I followed:
1) Use flashRec to back up and flash the recovery image (RA-1.5.2)
2) Reboot HOME+POWER
3) Whipe > Whipe data/factory reset
4) Flash ZIP from sdcard > Select the ROM you want to flash (Fresh 2.0d)
5) Reboot system now (this can take up to 5 min)
6) To flash patch like vanilla lock screen patch boot with VOL DWN+POWER then press HOME to get back to RA.
A few of the above steps within RA require you to press HOME to confirm the action.

[Q] Booting to Recovery with 3389

I just exchanged my g tablet at office depot and before I put clockwork recovery on the new one, I decided to update it to see what changes were made to the stock g tablet shell as I have been running vegan for a while. The tablet boots and runs as it should, but I cannot get into recovery mode. I hold power and volume + on boot and it says Dectect recovery key and it looks like it is going to boot into the stock recovery but then it goes to a screen where it looks like the tablet is updating (as if it was installing a new firmware) for about 10 seconds, then reboots into the OS...any ideas as to why I cannot get in?
thanks

I don't think the stock firmware's recovery mode has anything like the Clockworkmod's menu. The stock's recovery mode basically looks for a recovery folder and an update.zip in the internal sdcard's root directory and that is. Since there isn't a recovery folder and a file named update.zip in your internal sdcard's root directory therefore the behavior you observed was correct when you tried to boot into recovery mode. You will have to install the Clockworkmod to give you a more advanced recovery tool on the gtab.
Follow this link by scsione889 to install Clockworkmod on stock rom.

What you are describing sounds very much like a successful update via the standard recovery console.
• Are you sure your update didn't work?
• Did you have the update.zip in the root of your sdcard and the command script in the recovery folder?
• What version do you see in the settings screen?
• Did you know that you may need to wipe user data to see the new UI even with the latest ROM?

thanks for the replies
The strange thing is, I have done all of these things. I just did the same steps I did with the old tablet and cannot get it to work.
I will reread all of the tutorials and follow your steps..maybe I am missing something? I just dont see what I am missing..
Here are my steps.
DL clockworkmod.
Put it in the root of my microSD card.
power on device holding PWR and VOL +.
Wait for the viewsonic splash screen to show detect recovery buttons.
Release buttons.
Then gTablet splash screen appears.
then stock android update screen appears as if it is updating something.
about 10-15 seconds later, device reboots to regular OS..
I have also tried these steps putting the clockwork files on the root of the tablet's storage with no luck...It is crazy that I cannot even get into the stock android recovery. I have never had an issue with this as I have had a Droid, Droid X and Droid Incredible and have already modded on tablet..
The only thing that has changed between my tablet and my returned one is the OS version. This one shows 3389 in the settings and I know I never updated my other one.
Did something change with OS 3389?

No recovery menu available

I'm trying to flash the Vegan-Tab ROM on the gTablet I just got. I installed the 1.1 bootloader and CM .8. Or, I think I did. When I power up using power and volume +, I never got a menu when I tried installing these. The green box just popped up, so I assumed it was installing, then it rebooted normally. So when I try to boot into recovery mode, it does the same thing, and the menu never comes up. Did I do something wrong?
I have a similar problem ... loaded CM7 safely, was working for a while, all good. Decided (stupidly) to update recovery from CWM and now, nothing I do can get it to boot into recovery! Not manually, not through software (boot to recovery) options...
Also, the viewsonic birds screen is gone, so I assume something bad happened to the bootloader.
Still boots to 'production' cleanly, just not recovery or bootloader. Help!
FIXED - had to nvflash back to stock and start over!

[Q] Vol. down + power dosen't enter the bootloader

After I updated my (unrooeted/locked) Nexus S (9023) to 4.0.3 I wanted to try the 4.0.4 upgrade. After the 4.0.3 the recovery mode lost the backlight, so I figured the it was a good time to root.
I tried this one-click script to unlock. It worked and I installed CWMR and flashed the 4.0.4 upgrade. After a reboot the phone had ICS 4.0.4 and got root.
But not all is working. I lost the ability to get into the bootloader by pressing 'vol down.' & 'power'. The phone just starts normally.
The only way I can get into the bootloader, is to "reboot to bootloader" from a command line. If I choose recovery, I get a picture of an android at its back with a red ! (2105.dk/temp/img_1161.jpg). After two minutes it automatically reboots. What has gone wrong? What does it mean? And how can I fix it?
I'm new at this, so i'm out of ideas
try Vol up + power
Ahhh... now i'm feeling a bit stupid
Okay, i'm able to get into the bootloader, but the problem with the recovery still remains. (what does the picture mean? - 2105.dk/temp/img_1161.jpg)
I've tried both CWRM and TWRP. They seems to flash with no errors, but i still can not get them started from the bootloader (fastboot mode?).
Not sure if it's what you are looking for since I can't see the picture you are talking about but I think it's the recovery "security" screen. When you are there press power first and maintain it to press vol up, you should now be into the recovery...
Also remember stock rom has a script that overwrites any custom recovery with stock recovery each time the rom loads.
Yes, pressing [power] + [vol. up] at the recovery "security/error" screen, starts up a recovery.
I also didn't knew that the stock ROM overwrites the recovery. I never seen it mentioned any where else.
Thanks for the hints.
Okay, after learning how the stock OS trying to reinstall stock recovery, I managed to rename /etc/install-recovery.sh to *.bak
Now the stock recovery stays away, and CWM recovery stays on permanent.
Also, the error screen doesn't show up any more. (never found out what it means)

Ok, so I've been Resurrection_Remix_LP_v5.4.6-20150530-hlte.zip for quite some time n

Ok, so I've been Resurrection_Remix_LP_v5.4.6-20150530-hlte.zip for quite some time now, probably since not long after it's release, and it pretty much liked it. Except for the occasional seemingly random "auto reset" of android/app settings and preference (such as forgetting all my saved wifi ssid) after a random crash/reboot.
Starting last week, the camera became problematic, often failing to start entirely (error message, "could not connect to to camera"), or could connect to the back camera, but freezes when i try to switch to front camera. I tried wiping data with TitBak and it worked again, but the problem comes back a while later. Is this a software or hardware problem?
Anyway, I finally decided to upgrade the the latest RR and wanted to upgrade TWRP from 2.8.5 as I go along. Since the existing version fits the requirement for TWRP install...
Code:
TWRP Install (Requires TWRP 2.8.4 or higher already installed):
Download the latest TWRP image file (.img) from the download link and boot TWRP. Go to install and find and select the Images... button. Browse to the image that you downloaded and select it. Choose recovery and swipe to flash.
... I went ahead and did it, with the standard 3 wipes (couple of times) and then the recovery flash. Turns out it didn't work and the phone just keeps freezing at the first screen with Note3 logo and the red/blue/yellow test at the top left saying booting to recovery. It never did!
I then tried to reflash the recovery using odin with the .tar file, it flashed fine and auto re-booted back into the launcher (everything's gone of course). But I still needed to go back into recovery mode to either flash a higher version of TWRP, or install the newer RR.
Still, it gets stuck and wont go to recovery no matter i used the hardware button method, or recovery button in the power menu, or adb reboot recovery.
What's wrong!?!??!
c'mon guys, give me something.
Later TWRP are know to give problems .

I tried to Odin flash the old 2.8.5. .img file as well. Didn't work.
