After I updated my (unrooeted/locked) Nexus S (9023) to 4.0.3 I wanted to try the 4.0.4 upgrade. After the 4.0.3 the recovery mode lost the backlight, so I figured the it was a good time to root.
I tried this one-click script to unlock. It worked and I installed CWMR and flashed the 4.0.4 upgrade. After a reboot the phone had ICS 4.0.4 and got root.
But not all is working. I lost the ability to get into the bootloader by pressing 'vol down.' & 'power'. The phone just starts normally.
The only way I can get into the bootloader, is to "reboot to bootloader" from a command line. If I choose recovery, I get a picture of an android at its back with a red ! (2105.dk/temp/img_1161.jpg). After two minutes it automatically reboots. What has gone wrong? What does it mean? And how can I fix it?
I'm new at this, so i'm out of ideas
try Vol up + power
Ahhh... now i'm feeling a bit stupid
Okay, i'm able to get into the bootloader, but the problem with the recovery still remains. (what does the picture mean? - 2105.dk/temp/img_1161.jpg)
I've tried both CWRM and TWRP. They seems to flash with no errors, but i still can not get them started from the bootloader (fastboot mode?).
Not sure if it's what you are looking for since I can't see the picture you are talking about but I think it's the recovery "security" screen. When you are there press power first and maintain it to press vol up, you should now be into the recovery...
Also remember stock rom has a script that overwrites any custom recovery with stock recovery each time the rom loads.
Yes, pressing [power] + [vol. up] at the recovery "security/error" screen, starts up a recovery.
I also didn't knew that the stock ROM overwrites the recovery. I never seen it mentioned any where else.
Thanks for the hints.
Okay, after learning how the stock OS trying to reinstall stock recovery, I managed to rename /etc/install-recovery.sh to *.bak
Now the stock recovery stays away, and CWM recovery stays on permanent.
Also, the error screen doesn't show up any more. (never found out what it means)

Think I rooted it , tried to go into recovery, now I'm stuck. anyone here? right now? maybe can give me live assistance, over IM of some sort? pleaseeeeeeeeee
Looks like you're in the stock recovery, and the clockwork recovery mod was overwritten (it does that every time you reboot).
you can refer to this post for instructions on flashing the cw recovery again and rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865
it's basically just a fastboot command.
What do you mean you think you rooted it
Sent from my trinity nexus s
Also someone posted Odin with stock image...perfect for situations like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947950
i don't think we need to go the Odin way just yet
it sounds like he's in the stock recovery, he just need to do the fastboot, and all that stuff to get things going
The box pouring an arrow onto an android and/or the exclamation mark android is stock recovery. From there, just hit power first, hold it, then hit up arrow, you should get into stock recovery.
If that didn't work, pull the battery and let the phone boot normally. IF you're on 2.3.2 or higher, the install-recovery.sh script will replace the stock recovery in case you some how munged it up.
Reboot into fastboot with the volume key and power key, then when the box with the arrow appears do the power key hold and press the volume up, you should be in stock.
As others said, you can also just fastboot boot or fastboot flash the clockwork recovery image.
You're phone's not bricked, so no panic necessary.
edit: oh, and finally, if you actually succeeded in rooting, you could also just use ROM Mgr app to flash/boot to clockwork recovery, which is what you really should be using.
I successfully rooted my 3G XOOM today, installed ClockworkMod Recovery, but can't get into recovery mode! No matter what I do, I get stuck at a screen showing "Entering Android Recovery Mode Reading ODM fuse:1".
I waited for several minutes, and nothing happened. I tried to format th SD card, but didn't work too.
If I manually reset the Xoom, it stars normally and everything works fine.
Did you wait 3 seconds at the Motorola screen and hit volume down and then volume up? Were you able to get in it before?
Yes, i did that, but it gets stuck at that same point. And no, I never tried to enter recovery mode before.
How did you flash recovery the first time. Did you flash or push? Have you tried to push the recovery?
The first time I flashed recovery using the button inside ClockworkMod, and CWM said it went fine.
How can i push recovery? Using adb?
Got it! I don't know what caused the problem, but flashing the newest version of CWM recovery using this guide solved it!
Now I can proceed updating my Xoom to HC 3.1.
what worked for me was volume-down volume-up while holding down the power buttom ( like a shift key )
hi all i have a T-mobile G2X and im trying to root this phone so... i try to flash CWM using NVFLASH and everything goes according to plan but once i try to boot into recovery by pressing both volume up and down buttons nothing happens. Once i flash stock recovery phone boots and everything is back to normal but once i flash either version same thing happens again. I tried searching but couldn't find a solution. So if anyone can help me or point me to the right direction i will appreciate it.
You boot into CWM recovery by holding power + volume down (do not touch volume up). Hold the keys a good 10 seconds and wait for the fancy LG logo. Once you see the fancy LG logo (not plain white) you can let the keys go. You will then boot into CWM. You are just pressing the wrong keys. Don't boot that way into stock recovery as it will do a factory reset on your phone.
I seem to be having the same problem, except that my phone only shows the s/w update screen and wont revert back to the stock recovery when i try. nvflash just leaves my phone on the update screen for hours. it will boot up normal if i pull the battery and put it back in, but it only shows the s/w update screen when i try to boot into recovery. any thoughts?
To boot into Clock Work Mod Recovery, you press and hold the "volume down key" and the "power/sleep" button at the same time.
Hold the buttons all the way through the Lg boot logo. After a short moment, you will see a distinct "purplish" bluish glow to the logo. At that time, release both buttons.
You will boot into Clock Work Mod Recover and ready for flashing

This command does not work on the P999. Recovery is not on the standard partition and this command will only reboot the phone. To reboot into recovery (if you have CWM installed on the physical recovery partition and not installed by ROM Manager) you need either Weapon Rom installed, which has this built in or there is an app on the Android Market written specifically for LG 2X/G2X devices that knows where the recovery is installed and can reboot into it. On some G2X (P999) models it says not compatible because of the way LG wrote the build.prop but instead of saying "Ok" which closes the program you simply use the back key to get to the main program screen and it works like a charm.
This app is also preinstalled as a system app on my roms.

Thank You everyone for ur help. Ive figure everything out and im now running MIUI ROM.
I'm having issues getting recovery to work on a Verizon version xoom. I first flashed CWM version 4.0.0.4. The first time I tried to boot into it, it was stuck on the android with the red triangle for a long time before finally getting into it (coincidentally when I was hitting the volume key, don't know if that's related). Anyway, since then I haven't been able to get into it. It will be suck on the red triangle screen for a minute or two before rebooting into the stock rom (I'm running stock ICS). Since then, I've tried flashing the new TWRP 2.2.2 or whatever version it is and it has no effect. It's still doing the same thing. Any clue what's wrong?
So what I'm reading is suggesting that the android guy I'm seeing is the stock recovery. I'm not sure how that's happening. I'm installing the recovery using fastboot on my PC and being in the bootloader on my xoom. The prompts on both appear to confirm success.
I haven't tried this yet as I'm at work, but I think I've got the issue sorted. The following is what appears to be happening from what I've read.
1. I've still got the custom recovery stalled. When the Android guy pops up, one needs to press volume up to enter the options. Otherwise, it reboots.
2. The recovery flashes are taking because I'm booting back into the rom after a flash. The system's built in recovery protection is re-flashing the original recovery at that point.
3. To make my CWM/TWRP/whatever flash stick, I'll need to power down and then boot directly into the recovery.
I'll post again tonight to say if this works. Hopefully this thread can help out others who have the same issue.
If you don't get that to work fastboot img from link..

fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img
I scoured the forums, but have not been able to find out what I can do to solve my problem. So here it is.
I rooted my phone (to play around with some settings, what have you) and flashed TWRP recovery onto it. I got an error msg when booting up, so I decided to push an original recovery back onto the phone, because it wouldn't go to TWRP. I followed a guide (which I can't find now) to push back a stock version of recovery and it failed. My phone would boot normally just fine, but when I tried to go to recovery it would loop.
The OTA update came today, and dumbass me pressed continue (not thinking) and now I am stuck in a boot loop, and cannot get out of it.
Cannot get into recovery.
Cannot get into download mode.
Got any ideas?
Thanks
Same Problem
I have pretty much the same problem. Please help!
well without recovery/download mode working or the phone being in fastboot mode there really isn't much that can be done, you can always try to claim on warranty
boot loop
So, let me get this straight. If it failed when you tried to install the stock recovery, then you still have the TWRP recovery right?
I ran into a boot loop problem earlier when I tried upgrading TWRP. I just couldn't access my recovery so here is what I tried:
Code:
Turn your phone off.
Press volume down and power button until the LG logo comes on screen
Let go of both buttons
Hold the volume down and power buttons again until you see the "hard reset screen"
Press power once and then power again to confirm. The screen says it will reset your device but it will not as long as you have a custom recovery installed.
Your custom recovery should appear on screen.
Try the steps above and see if you can get into a recovery. Once you do maybe try resetting. Hope that helps.
