Hi everyone,
Well, i guess it had to happen at some stage!!! I am having major problems with my Uni and i have no more ideas on how to solve the problem so i thought that i would ask all my fellow uni lovers and see if someone might be able to help this old man!!
The Problem: I cant download any ROMS onto my Uni..
What Happens: I place my uni into bootloader mode, i then connect it to my computer and it tells me that the usb device is not recognised and active sync then dissappears. Then when i run the upgrade of course i get ROM errors, i have had error 114, 112 and 113.
The Specs:
I am running windows XP, i have reinstalled and reformatted XP 3 times now to try and fix this problem, using different XP packages, still no joy. I have active sync 4.5 and when i go into bootloader mode my uni says serial and 1.00 at the bottom.
What have i tried: i have turned antivirus off, firewalls off, reinstalled active sync, tried different usb ports, talked nice to my uni, and damn well threatened it as well!! The funny thing is, i have been downloading ROMs onto my uni for almost a year and this is the first time that it is having these problems...
From my minimal knowledge, i guess its a computer conflict with my unu but i just dont understand why after all this time its decided that it doesnt want to play!! If anyone has any ideas at all, please go ahead and jot them down and i will try, i love my uni and i want to make it good again!! Luckily it still works fine!!
Thanks everyone for all your help...
I think you have a problem with usb port of your uni...
Have you tried to attach your uni to another pc?

Hi,
- indeed as "pranik" says, try a different computer.
- does activesync always work ?
- be sure before upgrading to UNCHECK usb connection in activesync.
- don't use a usb hub
- try an "old" rom, one which you know has worked before.
- try to upgrade the bootloader to 1.01 NOT 2... (1... is for G3 = your device, 2.. is for G4)
be sure to read the wiki first about upgrading your bootloader.
greetings,
Wout
when you connect it over usb, does your uni show "USB" instead of serial?
Thanks alot for the ideas guys, its almost 3am here so i wont go and jump in with these ideas as i am afraid at this time of the day i will stuff stomething up!!!
I havent got another computer here at home to try another usb port so i will have to head off to a mates place tommorrow when the sun comes up!! Active sync has and is working, no problems there, the Uni says serial when i am connected to the usb port, now that is wierd, it should say i guess usb, right? wrong? not sure about that...i will try bootloader 1.01 as well and see if that helps at all...I have tried three different ROMS today so i will try an "older" one tommorrow and see if i get the same result, which i think i will...
Thanks again everyone, i really appreciate it, time for me to get some zzz's.

the moment you connect it, it should change from "Serial" to "USB" on your uni. This happens even before windows detects and initializes!
try plugging it into an alternate usb port on your system...
Thanks dream, i couldnt goto sleep until i had tried the usb thing and i tried all my ports and it stays as "serial" rather than change to usb...i havent a clue why its doing that, any ideas?
Funny cos it works as it should when connected to active sync...
take out SD and SIM, and charge to 100% before flashing and try again...
You could also try to use different USB cables. Damn things tend to deteriorate over time, especially when there's a lot of plugging and unplugging involved. Had been in a situation like yours several months ago, tried everything you tried and after a couple of hours I swapped cables with my E-ten P300. That did the trick.

As mentioned in shomki's post above; try & take out the SD Card from slot, go to bootloader mode & reconnect the USB cable. If connection changes to USB then that's it. Otherwise, you may have defective cable, usb port, etc., etc.
Had that similar problem since SPL upgrade from 1.0 to 1.01 & the only way to get the Uni to 'talk' to PC in bootloader mode (only) is by removing the SD Card. Strange!!!
Cheers.

I cant believe it!!
Thanks alot everyone, i took the SD card out and it WORKS now!! Amazing how something like taking out the SD card can fix this problem!!!
Now I am off to try some new ROM's!! Thanks again everyone, its great to have so many friends who jump in when ever there is a problem to lend a hand..
Great!
Just curious, what Uni variant do you have? O2, Voda, Dopod, etc? Is it a G3 (bootloader 1.x) or a G4 (bootloader 2.x)?
I had that very similar problem after applying super cid / sim unlock to my G3 voda Uni! Looks like some devices react to hacks differently from one another. This is the second time for this voda v1640, the first one is unlocking the extended ROM ... the only one that works is the patched extended ROM unlocker.
No wonder that a certain ROM build works well for one device while not for another!
G'day rh,
i have the qtek 9000 and its a G3 mate..its strange because before flashing this ROM i was using Ivans and i had no probs with that ROM..so obviously there is some sort of conflict there..
thanks again
lol seems like you didnt try everything...
glad you got your uni back...
the new roms are really good (ehem especially laurentius and beast's)
good luck!

actually, its not strange at all.
the uni supports flashing via SD card also, not just USB.
inserting the SD while in bootloader probably makes it think you want to flash via SD, so it makes problems connecting the USB.

hi shlomki,
it is still strange for me since i flashed 6 rom builds already WITHOUT TAKING OUT THE SIM OR SD CARD before the problem occurred. that was before when i had bootloader 1.0.
the only common thing between kanass69 & my setup is both are G3 & both of us did flashed Ivan's ROM. i don't suspect Ivan's ROM at all as the problem but instead i blame my SPL upgrade or Super CID'ing the device since i did screwed up somewhere in the process.
i'm sure other than me or kanass69, some are still flashing ROM's without taking out the SD what more the SIM card without any problems at all.
Anyone who wants to start a poll?
cheers!

i hope you are not using a USB extension hub. plus make sure that you are using original usb cable while upgrading
well this should be a tip for everybody who'll try to change rom. unless you upgrade via sd card, always remove the sd card before upgrading. saves you a lot of trouble.
luckily i have been successful with all my upgrades/downgrades with jasjar, tytn and touch using vista.
Hi farehmani & lukeap69,
With all due respect you are both missing the point.
First of all the problem WAS already solved.
Secondly, as posted above flashing ROM with the both SD & SIM card can be done successfully as I've been doing, before the STRANGE problem appeared.
Finally, we are just trying to figure out how this could be possible when I'm very sure that not all who are upgrading ROM's are removing their SIM and/or SD Card!
Anyway, I guess everyone had made their point and let this be an information source for future reference.
Cheers!

Hello, after installed Locations from Programs in my DHD my sdcard died, not instant but after a while maybe 12 hours. I have 1.72.405 update.. It was new years night so i dont remember to much
But then it just started to say: "No sd card mounted" or something.
Then i tried to put it in another phone the card is dead there to.
Then in a computer using an adapter, no success there either.
So is my card 100% dead or is it any chance of getting my data back, i was stupid and didn't have backup, to late now but you learn of ur misstakes.
Sry for wall of text, this is Short version
sdcard died a few hours after installing locations
no device founds it
help....
Loads of problems with this at the moment, everyones SD cards seem to be slowly dying since the recent update. The SD card isn't recognised in any other phone/computer as you say so the likelyhood of getting anything off it is slim.
Someone here has apparently spoken to HTC about it who have confirmed there is an issue with the new update which affects the unmounting of the SD card. The only thing they recomend is sending it back to HTC who will flash the phone back to the previous version.
I spoke to HTC myself the other day and managed to get them to send me another SD card - might be worth doing that. A factory reset doesn't work by the way, complete waste of time.
HTC phone number for UK is 0845 8900079 or 01279 206906 (same line, just not premium rate).
Take a look at these threads for people with same problem...

So if i buy a new card and havent send my phone to htc for them to flash the phone to the update before 1.72.405 the new card will brake?
I did go to the place i bougt the phone and they did say that the warranty didnt cover attachments so if i want a new card i need to send the phone and the card to repair, and the company that handels repair for most big electronic stores in sweden is the worst in the world.
How fast is htc at downflashing the phone?
I live in sweden if it has anything to do with how fast they are..

I've just replaced the SD card myself and havent had any further problems, everything has been fine since. No one else seems to have had any further problems either after replacing the card. I wouldn't bother sending the phone to be repaired, as I'm pretty sure it's just the SD card corrupted by the recent update somehow, not the actual phone.
In short, just get a new SD card, off HTC if possible. The number for customer services can be found here... htc.com/uk/CA_Hotline.aspx

My card has just gone down as well for no apparent reason - the phone was working fine and then the card stopped being recognised - I hadn't done anything with it.
I'm running 1.72.405.3.
Is there any way to recover the data from the card?
I fitted a 32Gb card over Christmas and that died within hours of being fitted which I thought was down to a faulty card although now I'm wondering if it is down to the HTC update.
So I guess the key questions are:
1. Are HTC going to be releasing a fix for this?
2. I have a new 32Gb card on the way - what are the chances of preventing that from being killed?

No.
I did take some photos off via pc connection last night connecting to it as a disk drive, but that is it.
I also have some apps installed onto it, but wasn't using any of them when it failed - I just turned the phone on to check email and it was giving an SD error or Insert SD card message - can't remember which and am trying to dig through logs to find out.

I see a temporary solution for some people stuck in new firmware versions without root.. *Cough* Old versions can be rooted..*Cough*
Hi there.
I installed the update the same day I got the phone. The Samsung MicroSD provided died 10 days ago; with stock rom - non rooted etc.
Can I talk to someone to get a replacement?

Called HTC last day about my sd card, gave them all the details they wanted and they told me that they will send me further info about if and when the new sd card can be sent. Hopefully they will understand and send me a new one.. No message so far though...
i had that problem with my kingston 16gb class 10, when i flashed a custom sense rom (but it was older base 1.32.xxx.xx) the sdcard died on me after rebooted. tried everything i could do to bring it back. so i left it for about week an decided to try it again...and it worked!! so maybe leave it awhile and try it again.
With the zoom beingg fairly new but ota update two weeks ago I am wondering why should I root my zoom tablet. Does rooting do anything for me at this point being so early in the game?
I don't have anything I want to remove from the zoom. SD card working is just one reason. Isn't there anything else that rooting can do for me. I bought the qifi version because I use it to control my computers in my home. Phone SMS on it when mine is plugged in. I control my automated home with it through wifi connection to my computer but really what benifits does root haave right now??
Rooting now gives you access to a working SD card and CWM as well as some themeing.

Sounds like either bad hardware or bad firmware... if it hasn't been modified in any way, I'm not sure what you expect us to suggest. This isn't a tech support forum.
The only thing I can think of to try is get into the flashing mode and re-flash the stock OS. Alternatively, if it has an old enough bootloader, install HSPL and flash a custom ROM. Neither of those will help if it's a hardware problem, though.
Yeah I know I'm not expecting tech support just seeing if there was something I could flash it with I'm an android user so I don't know the ways around wp7 could you supply some links possibly?

Pull the simcard out, wipe the connectors and put it back in.
Had that happen once before with my surround (that my wife now uses to play games and facebook since i got my titan). Simcard was my issue.
Not really that common of an issue.
If the doesn't do it, it's one of 3 things.
messed up flash on built in sd card. if that's the case you need to reset the phone.
1st try a zune restore - you can try to start the phone while holding the power and camera button until you see an image of the phone requesting to be connected to computer once you connect zune should launch and try to restore the device. This should bring you back to the last backup (if you ever made one) that zune took.
if that doesn't work, straight hard reset...
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-perform-a-hard-reset-on-your-htc-surround-guide/
And finally in emergency- take the phone apart and replace the built in sd card
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BiZzfdWDR4
When your done with above you would have to hard reset it. You will need a fast card and do a little research but it's a nice upgrade if you drop a 32gb card in.
Hello,
My Desire S is USB BRICKED but not entirely - it still charges when I plug it into the computer.
I have the ICS RUU .exe file from HTC and I can transfer it into the phone via a SD card reader.
My question is, can I install ICS with this file from within the device without using the computer cause obviously I can't do that.
Thank you.
I answered you already on iAndroid
Basically you need to try taking out the Rom.zip from the RUU, rename it to PG88IMG.zip, copy to SD-CARD and start the phone into bootloader.
This will start flashing the ROM automatically.
Make sure you remove the zip from the SD-CARD when all is done.
Good luck!
BTW, how do you know it is a USB brick? Maybe it is only a drivers issue? Did you try installing latest version of HTC Sync?
Thank you for your reply.
Yes I have tried installing all the drivers and the many solutions that ppl offer online.
I myself came to the solution of extracting the RUU files from the .exe file but I don't know how to do that.
How do you extract an .exe file?
Thank you.
Or try from a different PC, using a different USB cable
Doesn't work from windows 8

Just run the RUU.exe, when the screen pops up with the picture of the device go to the start menu (Windows 7) and type in search *temp* and press enter. When the folder opens search it for ROM.zip and there you go.

Still usb bricked though
This means - it's not "USB bricked", you have physically malfunctioning USB port. Look at it, you might visually detect the malformed/covered contact.

Looks fine and clean. Arrow-straight golden bars.
I have nice OtterBox Commuter case that closes the USB port with a rubber seal, I doubt anything happened to it.
I have a similar problem with mine - the phone will charge but it isn't detected by any of my computers which have known working drivers installed (i.e. they detect the missuses HTC fine).
No point in sending it back to HTC for repair as I don't think there is any way of getting it back to stock without using fastboot.
I've been considering buying and fitting one of these:

Replacement USB port and flex cable - if there is something physically wrong with the USB port then I'd imagine this would fix it. Worth a go as it is pretty cheap - not sure how easy it is to fit though...I'll let you know if/when I get round to ordering it!

I haven't done this myself, but have had my phone apart a couple of times - to replace the touch-screen and the LCD. Taking it apart is fairly simple - I have posted about it here several times before - and replacing this part should be a doddle. Yet again, here is the tear-down video from YouTube.
