Toshiba G710 external GPS antenna - Non-Touchscreen Windows Mobile Other

Hi to all...
I want to by this phone (actually i want to by Vodafone VDA GPS but it is the same phone as I heard), so I'm wonder, do I need external GPS antenna for this? I'm gonna use it just in towns, and on highway I won't use it in forest or similar. Here you have spec of this phone and what kind of plug-in is this (it can be seen on the pic on the web page)? If you said that i need antenna, i need to know what plug-in do i need for it. Thank you

Anyone, please...

this phone has internal GPS. I use Garmin Mobile XT to navigate. The only problem is sometime it takes too long to lock GPS satellites. Once they are locked, the function is fantastic.

Who's the first to pop it into the XDA II?
I want one!
I tihnk it will be far more useful than a BT gps.
One can always install a redirecting antenna in his car ...
though I've got a non-metal roof
re
I have the Sandisk SD Wifi card which works very well with the xda 2 although delivers rapid power drain.
I suspect this will be the same drain on power ?
Also, if you use the SD slot for the GPS, where do you store the map files ?
Just my initial thoughts.
Cheers, Shire
power for WiFi is a problem due to transmission. The way Ethernet
works, the sender "assumes" you didn't "get the message" and resend
it, unless you acknoledge it. You must also acknoledge at the same
speed that you got the data. Even if you only acknoledge in 10 bytes
every 2K you get, it is still doing lots of Transmits [note: I'm not
really familiar with WiFi details, just Ethernet in general]
the GPS is just a reciever. they claim 100mA. This should give us
approx 5 hours use on full charge, with the phone powered on and
the map running ... In fact, I'm pretty sure the BT gps would not
do better, batterywise.
On maps, you got me! I guess most cities can be loaded into
te internal memory or the \storage card. If you design a good
maping software, it will "cache" your SDcard data and ask you
to swap it only when absolutely need. Having NEVER played with
GPS software (tomtom destinator etc) I really don't know the answer.
But my Garmin has just 16Mb of memory which it claims can be used
to give detailed maps - downloading part from the PC one at a time...
so the PPC must be much better.
Also, GPS cards (ie CF) is nothing new, so someone must have the answers - so come on guys, give it to us!
re
well thats what I'm holding out for, a GPS CF card. My theory being you still have the sd slot free for memory card and plenty of detailed maps.
Plus with the back pack u get a bit more juice and the VGA out.
Can't seem to get it anywhere yet though, but accessories always seem to be slow to market, no point in mass producing stuff till there are enough machines out there I guess.
mmm I digress, sorry.
Cheers, Shire
CF GPS
CF GPS card have been available for over a year, what r u talkin about?
just gogle "cf gps" or go to eg www.ecost.com.
This isn't a real solution. I can go around town with the SD GPS in
my shirt's pocket, and if I need it, I'll use it. When you or a BT GPS
user will need their's, it will be in the parked car or at home ...
mobility! mobility! mobility!
OF course, I want my XDA iii - stable OS, GPS builtin, 512Mb flash builtin,
camera 1.3Mpixel, and WiFi built in. and a larger battery, of course....
I expect to buy it early 2005.
re
lol, I was referring to the xda 2 back pack, with built in CF slot, Battery and VGA out. It's not available in the UK atm.
I didn't think the CF GPS was that big, the only thing I am not sure of is where the CF slot is in the back pack, and whether a CF GPS will fit.
Cheers, Shire
Looking at that CF bakpak the CF slot is on the bottom, so if have the CF card GPS then the GPS aerial would be upside down.
or do you try and find a program to invert your screen when you start you map software. or get a external aerial for the CF GPS.
or is it just me and the CF slot is on the top of the CF bakpack

TOMTOM 5 LOCK UP USING BT GPS

Don't know if anyone else here has tried this workaround at all?
Using the remove programs in settings or activesync, remove Tomtom Bluetooth GPS Support (or whatever it's called).
Instead of setting up TT5 to use "Other Bluetooth GPS", set it up to use "Other Cable NMEA GPS".
Set the GPS Baud rate to 9600 or 19200 (both work fine for me).
Then set the COM port to "Bluetooth Serial Port COM6:" (or whatever your outgoing port number is for your BT GPS device.
The only downside is that you have to turn BT on manually before you start TT5 but it doesn't disconnect BT when it exits.
Used this setting on 3 different roads which lately caused me no end of lock-ups and not once has it happened. I think the problem is with Tomtoms bluetooth support drivers, constant problems with them since TT3.
I've only used this for 3 days and 400 miles but everything seems to be fine up to now, including traffic...........we'll see.
TT5
Did your TT5 load onto the XDA with no problems?
I have an XDA IIi and it loaded on no problems at all.
I have an XDA IIi and it loaded on no problems at all.
Great suggestion. I was getting really fed-up with TT5 and about to give up on it. Just back from France/Switzerland where it kept freezing, useless.
Simply uninstalled the TT GPS Support as suggested and used the existing BT Partnership with the TT Receiver and hey presto ... TT running smoothly again, shame I'm back in the UK on roads I know!
Does not work for me. But well worth a try.
This is doing my head in now £200 worth of TomTom software and dongle and unusable with the phone on!
arh help please
I have a problem with my XDA11 whilst trying to upgrade my navigator 3 software to navigator 5......
After I load the main program upgrade and then try to install the map disc one my pc ( desk top XP Profesional os ) it come up with tempory folder full, does'nt say if it it the pc or the xda11.
I have gone into all the temp folders on the pc and emptied them and it had not resolved the problem and I cant find any in the search function on the XDA
Any ideas??
Its a genuine copy of the Tom Tom software as well and there are no contact details on there sites including e-mail links
Regards Lee
there are known issues with Bluetooth device support using TomTom5, i was advised to use the 'Other Cable NMEA GPS' option when connecting a non TomTom bluetooth GPS unit.
also, i connected at the baud rate recommended by the manufacturer which i think was 9600, this worked fine without removing any parts of the software but meant manual switch off of Bluetooth in my MDA after use.
in addition to this, the Bluetooth connection issues with non TomTom GPS units should be resolved in the 5.10 upgrade, just installed it and re-paired an MDA3 to the Globalsat GPS receiver...it now auto switches off Bluetooth after use and the connection can be made using 'Other Bluetooth Receiver'.
another bonus of the 5.10 update is the keyboard shows on the display without having to use the hardware keyboard on the MDA...lovely.
for more info:
How to manually configure TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 for Bluetooth GPS receivers.
answer to last question about free memory during install problem can be found here:
When I install the TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 Upgrade the following error occurs: - Not enough free space occurs on temporary folder. Cannot run Setup

Thanks for the link dont know how I missed that....
Only problem now is when I tap Start etc there is no Run command to enter the %......% command line
I tried the search in explorer option with no results any ideas?
Sorry I'm not the brightest lamp on the planet
you are tapping Start on your PC right?
maybe the 'Run' command has been disabled or does not appear in your Start menu because it's been disabled.
are you the Administrator of your PC? are you running XP?
you may have to go into 'Control Panel', 'Taskbar and Start Menu', Start Menu tab and choose 'Classic Start menu'
trying to cover as many bases here so you can make some headway without too much back an forth as i'm signing off now....if you can get to the 'Run' command on your PC then you'll be able to solve the problem and proceed with the fix from the TomTom site.
good luck.
I have had so much trouble with satnav on pda's, especially with bluetooth that although I have xda 1 with wired gps and spv M1000 with bluetooth gps I have just boght a Mitac Mio 269 dedicated gps system. It has a 2.5 gb hard drive, 500 megs for mp3, the whole of europe, which is millions of miles, preinstalled on the system. Comes with remote and different mounts and has sd card expansion. Obviously it isnt any good for phone calls or word processing etc but it gives me peace of mind when travelling as I have zero sense of direction and very little patience. I still leave my other gps in the car though, as a backup.

Many thanks I told you I wasn't to bright you hit the nail on the head with the ( PC comment ) I was looking for the run command on the XDA11...
deleted the exe and evrything is loading up as we speak....
thanks again for your patientence....
Crusin-thru' I can see why you have gone your route its a lot less trouble I just use mine now as a back up phone because I spend a lot of time away from home and just simply use a Nokia 6680 on 3G.....
Also since I stopped using the XDA11 as a phone the pda doesn't keep resetting itself every ten minutes like it did!!
cash_13,
it happens to the best of us...had to think about it myself, instructions on the TomTom site could have been more specific saving many people a lot of time...but you dont always realise this until you have to follow the instructions yourself....glad you got it sorted now.

lg incite internal gps

i have been trying to use tomtom with lg ct810 incite. however no luck getting it to connect to internal gps. or any other program for that fact. does at&t lock gps to navigator somehome. any help would be appreciated
any help??
Without having the device (which almost noone here has), it's very difficult to help without a proper rom dump. With a rom dump help can be given.
If you're interested in dumping the rom and posting, here's info on how to do so:

Navigation Software for the Incite.
I have not tried TOM-TOM but i have GarminXT5.0.20w woking while reading the internal GPS on it's own and I have Nav-N-Go's iGO8 working using Franson's GpsGate as a gateway between the internal GPS and the software.
and google maps tool "Locate Me" works fine on it's own with the internal GPS. NEVER change anything under "Start-Settings-System-External GPS"; that is unless you are trying to connect to any GPS other than the internal. I got the Garmin working on second install and it took 2 months for me to get a good version of iGO8 that wasn't laggy on my incite. It can't be too difficult since this is the first phone I ever owned that has an actual operating system.
Look here
Check out this thread in tha ATT wireless forum, and then find a copy of gps gate.

Hi, I have a problem with Igo 8 on my LG Incite. It works fine for me when the phone is plugged in. When the phone is not plugged in, Igo8 doesn't respond to any touches. The screen goes black every time I run Igo8.
Could you share your experience with Igo8. I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.
I have the same problem with Igo8 on my LG incite?
haha20055, did you find the solution yet?
13blackwolf13, Can you give any hint?
Thanks
I own an Incite, subsidized from AT&T. The internal GPS works fine with Google Maps, as well as a geocaching program called WMMiniGPS.
I would like to use the GPS with Streets and Trips loaded on my laptop, but GPSgate on the PPC will not find my GPS port. I have version 2.5 of GPSgate, but it cannot detect anything.
I've read that other users have gotten GPSgate to work on the Incite. Am I missing something? Anyone know what COM port the GPS is on?
Nevermind. I forget to set the GPS to a virtual port through the control panel. It works fine now.
LG Incite GPS problem solved!
I got it working as well but only thanks to GPSGate. It took me some time to find a working serial for it but now it works like a charm. Google Maps works without it for some reason bypassing the GPS receiver lock. iGO8 was a little buggy first but the 14th version I installed worked ok finally It took me about a week to get everything set up.
In the end, I got them all working so if anyone is still having problems they can contact me and I will give them the solution good to go.
On the other hand, does anyone know if I can find a better ROM version? The original one is ok but a little sluggish right out of the box. Thanks
hi every1
i got gpsgate to work. does gpsgate use data on the start up because sometimes when i start gpsgate i see the data icon on the signal bar trying to connect. it connect a few a seconds with a G or a E on the signal bar than disappears. does that mean that gpsgate use data on the start up. i use stop data from lg incite forum and i know that i can not connect to medianet but when i start up gpsgate it looks like its connecting or connects because i get the G or the E on the signal bar. so any help will be appreciated

LG Incite CT 810 with IGO8
Hi Dismass,
Can you show me how to set Port, Baud to make LG work with IGO8
Thanks so much
If you are using GPSGate you can do it from the settings of GPSGate. Mine automatically created virtual COM2 and iGO found it instantly. If yours didn't do that automatically go to settings and create a new virtual port, it's fairly user-friendly so you shouldn't have problems doing that. After that it is just a matter of starting iGO and pointing it to the port you created, baud rate doesn't seem to make any difference on mine btw. Let me know if you are still having problems after that.

GPSGate does not use a data connection, it just grabs the data coming from the gps receiver and sends it to a virtual port that it creates for other software to use simultaneously. The icons you see indicate the availability and signal strength of certain networks (EDGE, GPRS, etc.) although they've been kinda unreliable on mine so I stopped looking at those pretty soon after I got my phone.

at& fuse gps problem (not the lag/strength related kind)

ok so i bought an att fuse and like everyone here mentioned about hang ups, weak signal, etc i thought i would just use my old external bluetooth gps unit.
so breifly here is the problem, it works fine when i use a single application like google maps. but when i try to put the information in the external gps app (start>settings>external gps) i have my problem.
under the hardware section, it states:
Specify the hardware port to which your GPS device is connected.
i do so click ok and nothing.. so i go back in to see whats wrong and the gps hardware port resets its self to "none". its as if the settings never save or reset them selves. i know on my old phone (tytn) this would be somthing i considered unusual (so i am kinda familar with the mobile) os.
i am not sure if there is somthing wrong with my handheld or if at&t has some kind of block?
anyway i tried to use the forum search and really didnt turn up any information so any help would be great i really like this phone.
thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
I've never had those settings stick on any of my WinMo phones.
You don't need to use that to use a BT GPS puck anyway, you set the COM port in the Bluetooth settings.
It won't let you make a selection from that drop-down because the GPS hardware does not function by exposing a COM port as with standard hardware, it exposes a GPS0: port, that is picked up by the GPS ID, and exposed to the system as COM4:..
Now because the GPSID has been replaced by HTC's version of it, it's designed to work only with their internal GPS. If you want support for an external GPS in the GPS ID, you need to cook the stock Windows Mobile driver back into the ROM..
That being said, you don't need the GPSID unless you plan to have multiple programs connecting to the GPS at once, so you should be able to squeek by..
thanks guys i knew i would get a respoce here. unfortunatly i was hoping for a easy solution to use external gps with multiple apps i see unfortunatly its not possible without alot of work.
at any rate i am still very hapy with the device i was debating on upgrading from the tytn amd so glad i did =)

TMC on Desire HD?

Hello Everybody,
maybe you Gals and Guys can help me out.
I'd like to make use of TMC within my Sygic Mobile Maps.
The Idea is to use the internal FM Chip or a "FM9BT-C", made by GNS GmbH with "usually TMC-able" navigation software. (Nice side affect: FM9BT-C also brings a 5V, 1A USB Charger).
I've got a FM9BT-C laying around.
As I make use of Sygic mobile maps for Android, I know from the .ini files, that TMC is just deactivated after stock installation of Sygic.
Within the folder: "\sdcard\Drive\Android\" you can find the .ini files too.
But for now, I'm a little stuck.
The internal FM Chip seems not to be accessible.
And I can't even connect FM9BT-C to DHD.
Pairing works fine, but the my phone shows: "Paired but not connected".
I also can't connect both devices.
The TMC Device needs to be set up with a COM Port.
But atm I don't even get so far.
So guys, whats your advice?
Any Devs around, that can help out?
Is Android not TMC capable at all?
I've got Android 2.3.1 up and running on my DHD.
Kind regards,
McK
