OOPS, my sd card is messed up - G1 Android Development

Ok, so i tried out that apps-to-sd script that is on the other thread on here, you know, the one that doesnt require a pc, just the script
well im pretty sure its my fault since others have had success, but as soon as i finished the script, my phones apps all force closed, so i rebooted the g1 and got stuck on flashing android, wiped, got everything back together the way it was before partitioning the card using the script, and now im here
by the way, im using a different sd card from what was in it when i ran the script, its a 4gb class 6, the one im using now is a 2gb class 2
the reason for this is because (here is why i think i messed up) when viewing the sd card from my computer, it shows my used mb's as being 109mb, and available 0mb. now its 109 because i can still use the browser to download files (downloaded jf1.42 from the browser, and used linda file manager to rename it to update.zip when i was trying to find a work around from having to do the wipe)
and paragon has been hanging up on me when trying to get it to start up, could be my ****ty dell, who knows
so now my only problem is, i cant use my class 6 4gb card, and i backed up 3.5gb's of stuff off of it (which definately isnt fitting on a 2gb, let alone its a class 2).
i plan on buying a larger sd card (btw, while your here, care to tell me the largest sd card the g1 can handle? 16gb ok?) but untill then, i really want to use my 4gb, let alone i dont want to toss a 4gb mini sd
any help is definately suggested, and yes, i know whatever mistake i made, is more than likely a noob mistake, hence the "OOPS" in the title, lol
gtalk [email protected] if needed, i get email updates instantly for this thread, thanks in advance

I would repartition/format the card. Then once you are done, use a linux live cd to shrink the partition and add the ext2 partition to it (thats how I have done all of mine).

ok before i go into the linux live cd, how do i repartition/format the card? i tried right clicking the drive in my computer and hitting format, but it hangs now wheras it didnt before

go to administrative tools and in there computer management. you will see disk management in there. remove the partition, create a new one (it might let you create it and leave some space, if so, do this, if not, use the full space). once you are done, use linux (gparted worked for me under kubuntu) to resize (if you used full space) and create a second partition (linux, ext2). Windows is best at creating windows partitions, and linux is best at creating linux partitions (go figure) so this is the best (if not longest) solution. you *CAN* try to save some time and do it all in linux, but I find the extra time might save you some headache.

well, now im still stuck, could be my crappy dell, but its all i got at the moment
im in computer management, clicked disk management, and its stuck on "Loading Disk Configuration Information..."
soooo what now? lol

Well, try opening the live cd, remove all partitions, create a windows partition, then try computer management again. Maybe the partition table is corrupted (linux can handle and fix this better). If so, creating a new partition using linux will fix that, then you can go back to windows, delete/remake partition and then go back to linux to create the second partition. I know its a lot of steps, but I really do see better results using windows to create fat and linux to create ext2 file systems.

do i have to run linux off of a cd? and where is the best place to download this

ok let me be a little more specific
i understand i need linux
i understand where to find linux, many different forms of linux
this android phone is the closest thing ive ever come to using linux, and i dont know the difference between them
is there a specific version i need?
will DSL do the trick?
where do i go in linux once im running it?
do i have to boot linux like i do windows, or can i just run it from the desktop like i can DSM?
but thanks for the link to google
EDIT: The reason i ask about DSL is because i already have that and can run it from my computer off the desktop, i think its through a emulator, not sure, i only tinkered around with it for a few minutes a couple months ago, but i know i still have it on here, so if you can do this through DSM, and can give me a noob-tutorial to do this, thats great, else point me towards which linux i need
nvm i found help on another forum

Don't feel bad, I messed up and did the same thing with my 8GB.
I finally got Vista (after a long hang) to recognize it via a USB SD adapter and right-clicked to Format. (Don't try and open it, it'll hang more)
It only said the volume was 6GB but at least the phone recognized it again.
I flashed back to Haykuro's 4.5 build and did the Format SD card from the settings and it recognizes a full 8GB again. Hope it works for you.

well i try to do that, and it formats it, but only formats 109mb in fat or ntfs only, wont do fat32
even after i format, even to ntfs, it wont see anymore than the 109
i recently attempted to do a apps to sd card using the script with a 2gb class 6 and that card only has just shy of 4 mbs, out of 2gbs, that can be seen/formatted, also only to ntfs and fat
how did you get it back up to 8gb?
it also doesnt help that my crappy dell is overheating every 10 minutes or so, i was so desperate to get my phone unbricked that when i was downloading the update.zip files i actually put my laptop in the freezer when i was using it and just left the door open lol
any suggestions just throw them here or catch me on gtalk [email protected], ill be on all night on my phone, but im tired of using my laptop on the freezer lol, if anyone posts up here, give me time to get back on here from my phone and reply. thanks in advance

To get back to 8GB I flashed back to Haykuro's 4.5 build using my other SD.
In the settings it will give you the option to format card from the phone
after unmounting. That restored it to full 8GB.

to make things easy for me since im now just using my phone, can you give me a direct link to the rom? ill download it and rename it using filemanager and flash it
btw, will this wipe out my apps going to this haykura build? because after semi-bricking my phone so many times im tired of re-installing apps lol

am i looking for build4.5-sdcard-signed or build4.5-signed
am i even looking at the right stuff? lol

Just do 4.5_signed, just make sure and Alt+W wipe before install. You'll have to go back to JF.ADP to retry the SDscript anyways. The 4.5_sdcard_signed is for when you already have Apps on SD.
I'm sure there's an easier way, but I have not found any way to format SD from phone aside from this.

if i decided to give up on apps to sd, but wanted to fix my sd card, is this 4.5 stable enough for daily use? ive read some of his blog, and i see he has 5.0, i guess this is all confusing to me since all ive known about so far is JF's stuff, i tried flashing 4.5 and i got the flashing android, im going to try to reflash and see if that fixes it

ok so i cant seem to get any of the builds to work, i tried 4.5, 4.9, 5.0, and 5.1, and each version of each one, and the furthest i get is a flashing android, except for on the 5.0 i get a cool noise, and a HTC Icon in the center of my screen, i guess this is the equivalent of the flashing android for 5.0, could be wrong
do i have to do a full wipe before using these? because i had jf 1.42 rc33 and flashed 4.5, and then 4.9, and then 5.0, then....wait...damn...while typing this and letting 5.0 sit for about 6 minutes it went to the login screen for the g1 (registration), guess im redownloading all my apps now... any reason not to keep 5.0? since its the only one i could get to work so far?

[HOWTO] Repartitioning Your SD Card with GParted Using Ubuntu

XDA user supremeteam256 has written an excellent tutorial on How to Partition SD Card with Ubuntu for Dummies. After reading the tutorial, I asked whether it was possible to repartition an SD card using GParted in Ubuntu without losing any existing data on my ext2 or fat32 partitions (I was not, however, as concerned with my fat32 because it is easily backed up). My goal was to add a linux-swap partition after my existing ext2 partition. Specifically, I wanted to steal 64MB from my ext2 partition and reallocate it to a newly created linux-swap. So, I decided to be the guinea pig and risk losing my data for a greater cause. Well, I didn't end up losing data on either of my partition on either of my phones. I have successfully done this three times--on two G1s and a myTouch.
WARNING: While this worked for me it may not work for you. I am NOT responsible for any and all loss of data that might occur from this process. Proceed at your own risk and ALWAYS back up your SD card before trying this.
Prerequisites
I HIGHLY recommend you first read the tutorial mentioned at the beginning of this post so that you are familiar with installing Ubuntu and using GParted. This tutorial assumes that you have a working version of Ubuntu (I am using version 9.04) on your machine.
Ubuntu
SD Card
Card Reader
Step 1
Open up GParted by clicking System > Administration > Partition Editor. From the drop down menu on the top right-hand side of the GParted screen, selected your SD card. Make sure you select your SD card and NOT your hard drive. You are on your own if you make a mistake here. For this example, I am using a 2GB SD card. Yours may differ so proceed accordingly.

Step 2
Once your SD card is selected, right click on each partition and select "Unmount" from the list.
Figure 2: Unmounting Each Partition
Step 3
Once you have unmounted each partition, right click on the ext2/3/4 partition on select "Resize/Move" from the list.
Figure 3: Resizing the ext2 Partition
Step 4
In the dialog box that opens, subtract the number of MB from using the down arrow button on the "New Size (MiB)" box. I would like a 64MB linux-swap partition. My SD card is 500MB (Figure 4) so I will click the down button until the "Free Space Following (MiB)" box reads 64 (Figure 5). An important step is to make sure that the box that reads "Round to cylinders" is UNchecked. This is so there is not partition in between the ext2/3//4 partition and the linux-swap since they must be in order (fat32, ext2/3/4, linux-swap). Once you have resized your partition tot he desired amount, click "Resize/Move."
Figure 4: Resize Dialog Box at 500MB
Figure 5: Resize Dialog Box Resized
Step 5
Next, create the linux-swap partition by right-clicking on the unallocated space that you have just taken from your ext2/3/4 partition and select "New" from the list.
Figure 6: Creating a New Partition
Step 6
The dialog box that opens will be similar to the resize dialog box you used in Step 4. In the "New Size (MiB)" box, enter the number of MB you would like your linux-swap partition to be. Then, select "linux-swap" from the "File System" drop-down menu. Make sure that "Primary Partition" is selected from the "Create as" menu. Again, make sure the "Round to cylinders" box is UNchecked. Once done, click "Add."
Figure 7: Selecting the Size of your New Partition
Step 7
Back in the main GParted screen, click "Apply" from the toolbar to apply the changes.
Figure 8: Applying the Changes
Step 8
When asked if you wish to continue, confirm your changes by clicking "Apply."
Figure 9: Confirm Your Changes
Figure 10: Watch Your Progress
Step 9
You should end up with something similar to what you see in Figure 10.

If you have any questions regarding this process, feel free to post them here. I don't know how much help I'll be as this is not my expertise but I'll do my best to answer what I can. I have learned, however, that there is always someone on the board who seems to have an answer for most questions. So ask away.

yo, thanks alot bro. i was trying to figure out how to resize my linux swap. i already have a 32 mb linux swap. so, would it be better to delete the linux-swap and do the steps you did or do you just recommend me resizing my linux-swap. currently i have an 8gb class 6 transcend sd card. i currently have about 6.62gb fat32, about 1000mb (if i remember correctly) for my ext3, and 32mb for my linux-swap. thanks
I would--and this is more opinion that previous knowledge or expertise, delete the linux-swap--resize the ext3 and re-create the linux-swap. However, I don't think it would really make a difference which way you go. They are both essentially the same thing. Remember, there is a chance of data loss, particularly if your ext3 partition is full (the free space would have to come from somewhere). I have, however, successfully done this twice, both on a G1 and a myTouch. Hope it works and report back results if you try it.
EDIT: Did it a third time to another G1.
ubuntu and gparted
Ok, dl'ed the iso, burnt it, loaded into live cd, got my 4gb sdcard in the reader, started gparted and tried to follow along with superteam256's partition instructions for dummies (found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535914. The fat 32 partition gets "created" fine, but when I try to add a second, it gives me an error saying only one can be "primary" and that I have to create an extended partition even if that means removing the primary. So I tried to create just an extended, using the whole card, and then logicals afterwards, which didn't work. I tried to create the ext2/3 (not primary) and add the fat32 after, still gives me the same error.
*EDIT: When the first primary partition is created, it does not give me anything but "New" when I right click so I can't even tell it this one will be "extended".
On a side note, I have tried adb, but for some reason after the frist 2 commands it stops working and I have to reboot, unplug my phone, and then it works...for another 2 commands. I really want to run hero on my rooted mt3g US 32B. So far the only ROM I have been able to load is some weird hacked version of the original OS (it's cool, but I wanna try HERO!!)
Anyone got some commandline (linux preferrably) directions on creating the sdcard partitions and filesystems?
Thanks!
I partioned my 8GB SD with gparted, and apps2SD is working now. But everything is moving to main FAT32 partion. How can I access or use other 3 partitions (ext3, linux-swap, fat32 at end). Any help

Access it how? Through the phone? PC? Only the fat32 shows up in Windows and in non-root file explorers on the device. The files on the ext partition are usually located in /system/sd depending on the ROM. This can only be accessed via linux using a root explorer on the device, terminal emulator or ADB.

use the command: fdisk

type fdisk --help(or fdisk -help or something)

Excellent tutorial. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. My SD card is already partioned using ROM Manager / Clockwork Recovery. I currently have 15 GB FAT32 and 1 GB ext2 (I guess).
Running Ubuntu 10.10, I've connected the phone via USB and I can access the FAT 32 partition via Nautilus/Explorer.
Using GParted, I can only see 15 GB of unallocated space (as /dev/sdb). The FAT 32 is not recognized as such and the 2nd partition doesn't even show.
Using the Ubuntu Disk Utility, /dev/sdb is reported as 15 GB on HTC Android Phone but unpartioned.
Any idea of how to proceed without wiping everything and with working on the whole 16 GB?

I have a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB microSD HC-I card that I use in my Transformer Infinity tablet as a storage device. I had it setup as (1) 32 Gig FAT32 partition.
Well I messed around with the partition on it the other day and it no longer would work. I decided to just wipe the stick and create a new 32 GB FAT32 Partition.
The thing is, now all (partition) tools I have used says it is only a 30 MB stick and in a "RAW" format !!???
I have tried:

You do have Linux installed, on your TF700.
Put the card into the TF700 and check in a root shell the output of:

OK, at least the operating systems agree that your card has lost 99.9% of its capacity.
Some users with similar problems used the "official" formatting tool to recover, you could try that first:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
If that doesn't work, we can try something with hdparm.

Been there done that I have tried about 10 different formating/partitioning applications.
Odd thing with that one is that it says my card is "LOCKED" which it is not !
I am not even using the micro card addaptor that has the lock tab on the side. (I dont have a media reader
only USB readers that I always use with zero problems. Also I have tried another micro card with this usb adapter
and it works just fine) I use a MicroSD card-to-USB adapter that has no locking feature.

I have to start with a warning - I don't know if this will work at all. I can only give you some ideas what you could try.
First get a decent bootable Linux distribution that has all the required tools, I recommend this one: http://www.sysresccd.org/
(it also has gparted and lots of other good tools - this bootable CD or USB stick should be in every household ). Write to a USB stick or burn a CD and boot it. If you want, start the graphical desktop (read the instructions after booting) - then you can easily paste the output of the following commands into the browser (mark with the mouse, then middle-click into the edit window on the "new post" page to paste).
Then open a terminal and find out which device name Linux gives to your card (/dev/sdX, where X is some letter). If you don't know, you can do one of the following:
- run "dmesg" after plugging in the USB adapter and read the last few lines where it detects the drive and partition(s).
- run "fdisk -l" (that's a lowercase "L") to list all partitions on all disks. One of the "disks" should be your card.
- run gparted.
Next, run "hdparm -I /dev/sdX" (that's an uppercase "I", and X must of course be replaced with what you found out in the previous step). If you get a lot of info, that's good so far. If not, post the error message you are getting - it might be that hdparm doesn't work via USB or at least not via your adapter.
If that worked, the next thing to try is check for a host protected area. I don't know if SD cards can have a HPA at all - I know normal hard drives and SSDs do, so let's just try. Run "hdparm -N /dev/sdX" and post the output.
There is another command line switch "--dco-restore" that might help in your case - or not. I honestly don't know, and it may even permanently brick your card.
Read the output of "man hdparm" to find out about all these options. Note that it says for some of them "EXTREMELY DANGEROUS" - do not take this lightly, hdparm is an incredibly powerful tool. Make sure you always enter the *correct* device name, do not inadvertently apply any of the "dangerous" options to your hard drive. Mistyping one of the "dangerous" commands (e.g. saying /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb) can lead to total data loss on your PC. I can guide you, but you do all this on your own risk.

Yes of course I know this is all my own risk The card is useless in the present state, so if it bricks it completly then the garbage can is only 5 feet away from me.

since I used Linux ... so my Linux Knoweledge is so-so at best, so thank you for listing the commands. It might be a few hours till I have the results but I shall return !
Once again thank you .. I posted in many forums around the web, and you are the only one that has tried to help :highfive:

Personally, I would just replace the card, even if I could fixed it, I won't trust it anymore. For little over 20$, give you a piece of mind!

I agree with you 100 percent ... but there are some photos on there I would like to keep and few songs it would be hard to find again . plus I just like the feeling of fixing something that's broke even if it's going to break again.

I now did some tests with hdparm - both on my Linux machine with a USB3 (Kingston) card reader and on the TF700 with its microSD slot. In both cases, hdparm reported "invalid argument" - apparently hdparm cannot work with MMC/SD cards at all. Actually not that surprising, because it was designed to support SATA/PATA/SAS devices, and MMC is a different subsystem - but it was worth a try and at least now I know it doesn't work.
I also researched the issue on the internet - there are multiple reports from users having the same "30.6 MB" problem, but no solutions. Now I am officially out of ideas how to save your card.
At least I learned a *lot* about SD cards (and most of that also applies to our internal eMMC). This page is a gem -> https://wiki.linaro.org/WorkingGroups/KernelArchived/Projects/FlashCardSurvey
I actually have to opposite problem, when I use a micro sd reader on my laptop the sd shows up as 600 and something gigabytes, so I have to use the micro to sd converter and use the card slot on the laptop to format it. It's weird how things work sometimes.

MY SD card suddenly not work yesterday. Use 1 Card reader shows 0 kb. another card reader shows 30MB.
Tried iCare, CardRecovery, Recuva, Wondershare, EaseUS Partition, Gparted,TestDisk, ZARecovery, Easy Data Recover, Chkdsk /X /F.
None of it works.
P.S. TESTDISK shows "No End Partition"
I keep the SD in card reader for 3 hrs and suddenly windows prompt "Auto Play" for that drive.
I got my data back.
My conclusion is your data still on the SD card. just the partition table crashed or the SD card has been locked out some how.

For Windows, use the live bootable image you can burn to CD. This is the only partiton editor I know of that won't mess up your card 100% of the time.

Yes. AFAIK no fix is known other than trying to get a replacement under warranty.
i have this prob can anyone help me
I contacted Sandisk regarding this matter and they said I had only 2 things to do.
1. For data recovery, I had to send the microSD to this company that recovers loss data from damaged storage devices.
2. If you dont mind the lost data, send the disk directly to Sandisk service center to get a replacement. Do this if you cannot get it replaced by the store from which you purchased the microSD.
I just sent mine to Taiwan to have it replaced, and I am in Indonesia, and I had my friend buy the microSD for me from Amazon.

Any fix for this?

SOLVED: Jellybean now on my GT-P5113 tablet, all internal sdcard storage is gone.

Hey Guys,
Wow, the filesystem of AKOP is a LOT different than stock, rooted touchwiz Samsung ICS filesystem!
My current ROM came from these instructions and these two packages:
Install CM10.1 based Android 4.2.1 update on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 GT-P5113
cm-10-20121130-EXPERIMENTAL-p5110-CODEWORKX.zip
gapps-jb-20121130-signed.zip
Look folks, I know this is a lot to read. I am sorry but I have 5 questions that I really need answered. Please speed read or just tell me what you know. Please!
Why is my 16Gb of internal storage down to 507Mb free?
What can be removed from internal storage to make more room?
"Settings, Applications, Developer, and check USB Debugger box" is NOT in Jellybean, how to enable it?
I am using cm-10-20121130-EXPERIMENTAL-p5110-CODEWORKX.zip. Is there a newer, better JB ROM for me that is stable and will not "break anything"?
Does this mod contain a screenshot app or must I install one?
Remember I was telling you that I could not get Milestone JB to install on my tablet. Well, I found some different instructions here: Install CM10.1 based Android 4.2.1 update
And this worked perfectly!
One issue that I am having is with Titanium Backup. I keep getting this message:
"System settings may cause problems. Go to Settings, Applications, Developer, and check USB Debugger"
There IS NO SUCH option in Jellybean. The Settings/Apps options only lists the applications; downloaded, running, and all. It shows all of this being in Internal Storage, 11Gb used, 516MB free. I cannot restore all of my apps, I have no more room to install anything. This is the same device with same internal 16Gb sdcard and 32Gb ExtSdCard. There are NO developer options in the Cyanogen ROM that I installed. Is this a real problem or is there a hidden option or workaround for it?

Now this worked like a charm. No problems at all and I really like Jellybean. I also installed the corresponding gapps zip and all is well. Deleted the cache and the dalvik cache and went clean. Of course I did a CWM backup first and did all of this in CWM ROM Manager. I am really happy with all this and I think there are updates that are better as this is from November and is labeled as EXPERIMENTAL.
There is now another one, the gapps is a file called: gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip I did update with CWM but did not get the gapps so I had to restore. This Cyanogen ROM is nice but the filesystem is different. sdcard is in root AND under /mnt. /mnt now contains 7 folders. extSdCard is also under root and under /mnt.

Both sdcard (internal) lead to the same location. Both sdcard folders appear to be the same, not sure how to tell with ES File Explorer Properties. Both of them are called "Folders" and appear identical. No mention of symlink or anything else. Do I have duplicate of the same storage device?
One serious problem I have is that all my internal storage is all but gone. I can only restore about 30% of my apps without data before I run out of room. I DO have a 16GB external SDcard where I keep my pictures, personal files, and many installed apps have the option to move to SDcard by ZDbox or Android Assistant. Now I have a serious storage problem. I cannot install all my apps "because there is no room on card".
Internal Storage shows a big bar graph, about 30% is used up by the color bands listed below, over 60% is dark gray and what I assume to be available. All categories are colored bands on the bar graph.
Settings/Storage does list my two cards, what size, and what is free and used.
Internal Storage Total Space = 11.87Gb. Available = 525Mb
Available = 525Mb
Apps = 625M (app data & media content)
Pictures, Videos = 692Mb
Audio (music, ringtones, podcasts, etc.) = 853Mb
Downloads = 226Mb
Cached data 18.76Mb
SD Card Total Space = 14.53Gb
Available = 3.02Gb
Here is a picture of my Storage Settings View:
This AKOP stuff is GREAT, but where did all my internal storage go? I have sdcard duplicated, The bar graphs tell me nothing about where are all the additional gigs of space, and I cannot restore most of my apps because there is no more room.
I really love this and want to keep it but I need some room back on my card! When I wanted to restore from CWM, Touch or even regular, no backups could be found because they were on the internal card where CWM put them, yet all I could access was the extSdCard. I could choose to mount the internal sdcard, from CWM boot menu, but it would NOT mount, thus the backups were not available. Is this an issue that I can fix or should I copy ALL backups to the extSdCard?
Just checked Properties in ES File Explorer on the /sdcard (Internal) Shows as "Folder". Size 3.86Gb. How can I check this internal card and get my space back? Let me check in ESFE my extSdCard "Folder" size while I am at it. 11.6Gb.
Please, give me some insight!
Can you guy give me some ideas or help please? Thanks!
Well, I got my answer, sort of. This build of jellybean just plain sucks. I recently got up the balls to install jellybean on my Droid Razr Maxx. This is something I was really cautious of doing. It is one thing to mess up the tablet, I can live without it for a week if I mess it up, but the phone is my business, phone, everything and I cannot be without it. Too risky to try, especially after this snafu of a ROM with this tablet. Too many bugs. Audio jack and loss of audio and voice typing over the jack. Constant nag screens when headphone jack plugged into AUX jack on car. And the worse thing ever, all of my SD storage is just, ...gone. Out of 16Gb space, this should take not even ¼ of the space, yet I have maybe 528Mb free space. When all calculations are done, they do not add up at all. The space just "disappeared". I cannot install any apps larger than 500Mb and only one if that. No room for a picture or anything. Totally unacceptable, this ROM is ah, "not so good".
So I went "ROM shopping" for the phone and found 3 different sources for the 4.2.1 jellybean ROM and downloaded all of them with instructions. One uses CWM to wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, factory reset, put zips for gapps and system on SD card, use CWM to install and do all processes. TOTAL FAILURE! I bricked the phone!
Other ROM was CM 10 with CWM, did not try it. And last but the best and what saved the day was an all in one script for Windows, Mac, or Linux. Came with 4 options.
1 Flash Official Jellybean Firmware (Wipe Data)
2 Flash Official Jellybean Firmware (No Data Wipe)
3 Razr Blade: Motorola Droid Razr 4.1 Root Exploit by djrbliss
4 Install Safestrap & App by Hashcode
Use AP FastBoot Mode, USB to phone, run script in Linux, option 1 to get new system. Option 3 got my root back. After that, installed CWM and Titanium Backup to get everything back plus my Google accounts. Now this version of jellybean rocks and kicks total stinking behind off the planet. NO bugs, NO problems, Nothing wrong with it at all, everything works, and the storage is normal and just fine.
So, I am off to go ROM shopping for the tablet again to get it right this time. I wish this script would work on the tablet. This is what I used, now I really have to find something like this for the tablet.
[SCRIPT] DROID RAZR Utility XT912 Jellybean -- Windows + Mac + Linux (All In One!)
Cheers mates. All is not lost, we will get this right!
BIG Help
Update: 4/1/2013
Uhm, for Developer Options, go to Settings, then About Tablet. Tap the Build Number 7 times. Now you have Developer Options added and can turn on USB Debugging.
This dude got the missing storage problem, SOLVED, spot on! Follow his directions, step by step, and you get all of your storage back. Yeah, you will start over, but Google put ALL my stuff back in less than 30 minutes. This really, really rocks. Follow link below. I will re post his instructions just for convenience, but take no credit for this fantastic and very helpful post by Rated RR. Quoted text is posted in blue.
Get your Storage Back!
Reclaiming Lost Gigabytes
If you feel you've lost internal sdcard space to the unknown, and you don't mind starting over, then follow the next steps:
1, Go to recovery
2. Mount /sdcard
3. Format /sdcard
4. Wipe data/factory settings
5. Reboot system
6. Check-up your Settings > Storage if everything went fine (see Note 2, below)
7. Restore your Google account, and set back until all your apps are reinstalled by Google Play.
Notes 1:
Running the factory defaults option through CM GUI settings WILL NOT reclaim your lost SDCard space.
No CM ROM/kernel will be lost of course, only your customizations (with apps).
It seems GApps will be intacted as well.
Notes 2:
If everything is fine you should have free around 12GB for a 16GB version, assuming you have partitioned to 4/12.
Okay, that was him. This is me. I hope this helps, *somebody* had to try and help and finally, it is here.
Edit: Here is a screenshot of my storage now. As you can see, it really is working.
funny, this has been driving me crazy.
i did a search and this came up. worked like a dream.
funny how that search thing works huh

[Q] No Speed Improvements with CROMI 5

i have been using my tablet for studying and lately, it has been very laggy to the point of being unbearable!
i have no technical experience about the subject matter but decided to go ahead and try to unlock, root and install a ROM. the goal of which was to improve the tablet's responsiveness and usability. i was very positive upon learning about the DATA2SD mod.
i followed the instructions found on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425383 (CROMi-X 5.3a)
the tablet boots and runs, but when i ran tests (AndroBench), the Random Write Speeds were mere 0.2mb/s.. yet the SD mod seems to be in effect! as such, i could even access sdcard0 and sdcardi in file explorerers.
i mounted the sd card, class 10 Sandisk, onto my phone and ran a test using A1 SD Bench.. the results showed 8.1- 11.1 mb/s write speeds..
what did i do wrong? i have been very stressed by this entire process.. i was doing things i have never done before, and worst, i knew very little about what i was doing.
someone pls help me!
Edit.. heres a pic showing info about my storage..
i partition the 32GB card into: Fat32 5GB and EXT4 25GB

You must have done something wrong as you should have noticed a difference.
Did you go straight to data2sd? Which kernel and options did you choose? Clean wipe or dirty flash on top of stock? Did you choose all the apps or do a lighter install?

i was previously on cromi 3.2.. rebooted.. then flashed the data2sd.. but that didnt work so i did more reading and finally, i found your signature on the forum. clicked on the tf700 option and tada! i found cromi 5.3! and it had built in data2sd! i was ecstatic! great thanks by the way!
i booted in recovery and performed a factory reset, then,
since i was using twrp 2.4, i flashed the suggested bootloader with the latest twrp (WW series), then rebooted, then went into recovery.
installed cromi 5.3 with the following selections
_that os (first option) , data2sd enabled
240 dp
cromi xlite + stock launcher
default options for stock apps
default options for misc apps
music fx
added polaris, titanium back-up, emulator, LMT (i was very found of the pie controls)
rebooted, then went into recovery to install the 5.3a patch..
the tablet boots, runs, i even have the sea wallpaper now.. but the random write speed is still the same as before.. still 0.2mb/s
super thanks sdbags for replying!

the tablet has very poor write speeds (or so i read).. its original speed would 0.2mb/s.. i read that by using Androbench i would be able to verify if data2sd speed enhancement is in effect.
i posted the sd card write speed to clarify that i am indeed using a class 10 sd card..
or am i using them wrong? i dont really have enough know-how about this, i have just been reading and rereading guides.. i just started.. i dont know why things go wrong, or how to troubleshoot them..
EDIT:
so i transferred the sd card unto my phone, ran Androbench and choose the micro option, results for random write was 1mb/s..
if it matters, my phone is a SGS4 Snapdragon variant

The sandisk is it an ultra uhs-1 class 10? Did you do a clean install? You don't need to use the mount zip for installing the ROM - that is only for TWRP operations. The rom installer should figure it out for you.

hmm.. it says SDHC.. could it be that i have the wrong type of sd card? if so, then thats great news! maybe if i change my sd card, ill have better results? at this point, i would really rather prefer a physical problem than technical ones..
i always did a factory reset if thats what clean install means..
i'm beginning to conclude that the sd card is the main problem here..I really do hope changing to another SD card will solve it.. super thanks sir for your time and knowledge!!!
sorry for the wait.. i had to weait for 5mins, got distracted while waiting for the time limit to expire
SDHC should be OK (must be 32GB or lower?)
I just ran AndroBench on my internal SD Card with fsync disabled - I'll run it on my Sandisk UHS-1 Class 10 64GB SDXC in a minute
Internal SD Card /data
External SD Card /data (ROM2SD/DATA2SD)
As you can see they are approx the same as the external data setup gives the same benefits as internal + fsync without the dangers of disabling fsync.

would a reinstall possibly fix this?
how I plan to reinstall..
reboot to recovery, advance wipe everything (same options, will not do anything about fsync)
then reinstall cromi 5.3, go back to home
then flash 5.3a patch, then reboot
would that be okay? i am scared to brick my device.. or how should i go about it? i have copied my files to my computer and do not have many apps, i use my tablet solely really for studying.. so a total wipeout really wont bother me..

BTW I tried the benchmarks without fsync disabled and got very similar to yours so it looks like the card controller is rubbish on the transformer as well. But the rom should feel zippy even so.
If you want to wipe your data2sd partition you'll need to run the mount zip first.
Why don't you just try a nice clean install on internal first - let's get that up and running.

factory reset, then wipe internal.. then flash mount zip, delete internal (just to make sure)
then flash cromi-x 5.3, home, flash 5.3a patch then reboot (this time i disabled fsync)
the tablet booted, runs
i did perform any backups but i still have androbench and google drive(i used it to transfer the screenshots)? isnt it suppose to be gone? even my pie shorcuts are still here..
i ran the test again, here are the results (even the screenshot shortcut settings remained the same, shouldnt it have been affected by the reset as well?
anyway, the numbers showed big imporvements on write speeds!
i dont know if this helps, but heres my storage:
sdcadi, data and datai are all empty

[Q] Thinking about porting CM to the Pantech Element. Many questions.

Hi folks, I'm new here and new to Android/CM development. I have some goals that I will outline below and a whole bunch of questions about CM development. Hope you can help answer some or all of them!
I have a Pantech Element (P4100). It's not a bad budget tablet for it's day (2012/ICS) but I think it could be a lot better with the right ROM.
GOALS-
Gain more space for applications and their data on my Pantech Element. This device has about 1GB available for apps and data that can't be placed on the internal "media" partition or the external SD card.
Move up to a newer, more modern version of Android. More responsiveness, move functionality (Google Now would be nice.)
Remove bloatware AT&T apps.

WHAT I HAVE:
Pantech Element with official ICS update applied, rooted, with TWRP installed
Ubuntu 12.04 VirtualBox environment with Android dev tools, cyanogenmod Jellybean for Pantech Burst downloaded from github
TWRP backup of system, data, cache , boot.
Linux experience - both as a user and programmer
I have found the following resources:
Pantech Burst kernel and device tree in github (The Burst phone is a close cousin of the Element)
Pantech Pororo (=Element codename) kernel and device tree - nonworking? abandoned? in github
Insecure boot.img from somewhere on the web.
build.prop and partition map from my device
QUESTIONS-
How best to accomplish all of the above goals? I am assuming that a port of CM10 to the Pantech Element is my best option, as it would give me Jellybean and the possibility of using sd-ext for app storage (true?) but I'm open to looking at other options.
I'm not sure if it is necessary to build my own kernel as part of a CM10 installation. Seems less risky to use the stock kernel. Any reason why I would not want to use the stock kernel? Any issues with using the built-for-ICS stock kernel with JB?
I really, really need to avoid bricking this tablet. Anything I can do to brick-proof my development efforts beyond the TWRP backup I have done already?
Thank you for your help!.

I sure hope you do
I really have nothing to offer except encouragement. I'm a pretty advanced user, but no dev. I also have a rooted, unlocked, TWRP equipped Element, just dying for cyanogen. (which, btw, I wasn't sure from the topic that's what you meant, when I see "CM" I think Clockwork Mod, maybe why your topic isn't getting hits, I dunno)
I've tinkered with mine quite a bit, using secret code revealer to turn on tethering, and then...the framework thing, I forget the name...XTerra? Xzibit? Xience? whatever, to change a few things. ROM toolbox to change some others, like the start-up animation and sound. (mine plays "Bad Moon Rising" instead of stupid AT&T jingle on boot-up, it's awesome) Lucky patcher and a modified, uh...this and that. Etc, etc.
Also, I have a HEAVILY modified rooted, rommed Samsung Continuum running Gingerbread (that phone never got any update past Froyo) my point is, I'm not afraid to mess with stuff. I have zero advice for your porting, but I'll try it if you figure it out :good:
Element
I also have no experience to help you but we do need a new ROM for the Element P4100. One thing that might be considered if and when you work on a ROM. The Element mounts 2nd partition on micro sdcard, while most devices mount the first partition. So apps like link2sd can't work properly as they mount the 2nd partition, would help in moving apps to micro sdcard for internal space.
Hoping something comes for the Element
I completely agree and I hope you can make a go of it. A friend of mine a while ago was trying to help me port CM to this tablet. But he's a math Major now in grad school, so.... let's just say he has other priorities. Oh, also, I moved continents. I gave my element to my sister and my mom has one too, so I'd love to see an update to the OS through the community. The worst is when it says it doesn't have sufficient storage to install a couple of simple apps. There's really no reason for it considering you can store that kind of stuff on the sd card. I think Pantech set it up to install apps to the rom, which if I recall correctly is only 1 GB or so. but it has at least 12 GB of free built in storage out of the box and with a nice big SD card, plenty of additional storage. It really irks me that pantech didn't do a better job implementing the os. Anyway, I'm here for moral support Wish I could help test as well, but as mentioned, both elements I had access to are no longer anywhere near me
[EDIT]
Oh, I almost forgot. My friend who was helping me also had me set up a linux harddrive just for the development process. We never got very far, but if you wanted to look at the file structures, it might be helpful if you're new to developing. I remember we got a working recovery going a couple of times.... well... not fully functional, but it loaded... This was before twrp was a huge thing. anyway, if you want, I can try to repo the build files somewhere so you can look at what he had done in case it can help you figure things out a bit.

I can give you a work around for insufficient storage, I also had that. Just install link2sd and at least an 8 gig micro sdcard. Partition the micro sdcard in 2 partitions , 1st about 1 gig and 2nd the rest of the card. Both in fat32. Link2sd will write its script when you open it and then ask to reboot, from there you just link all installed apps to micro sdcard and set settings to link all future apps there. Element does have to be rooted and you won't be able to use the micro sdcard for personal stuff, not with es file explorer but some of the others will write to it. You wont have any problem with space then.
Usually the tablet writes to 1st partition and link2sd will use 2nd but for some dumb reason Pantech's software uses the 2nd instead. I called their tech and ask about it and all they said was we know.....duh.

I did this method, and had a couple question, if it's not too much of a derailment. You say the Pantech software uses the 2nd partition, but when I do it... yes, it does, but so does link2sd. I assume the method you describe you plan to use the first partition for linking apps, right? How do I make that happen?
What I have is: I just lose a gig of my card that I can't "see" with any file explorer and have a second big partition that is Fat32 so I CAN link apps, but I can't move data using link2sd. (I get a "your partition is Fat, so you can't put data there" error) AND it's the partition that shows up in settings/storage and root browser, etc. The ONLY partition, really. Ideally I'd make a 1gb partition of ext2 (so I can link apps AND private data from Chrome, etc.) as recommended by the app, but that doesn't work for some reason. I'd settle with having two true partitions that I can use, but I can't get there either.
I think part of this problem is this whole "interior/exterior SD" business. Apps in general and Android itself seems to be at a loss to smoothly integrate the two. Even Link2sd shows apps as "On SD" when it means media storage. I can't see my media storage in Clean Master, etc.

I haven't been able to use the first partition for anything. What I did was let both use the 2nd partition. I did make a folder to store any files that I wanted on the micro sdcard as the rest will be loaded with apps from lin2sd and makes it hard to find other files. Also another problem that I found is that ES File Explorer can't write/ move any files or pictures to the 2nd partition after link2sd writes its script. So I use File Manager which will move/ delete files and pictures on micro sdcard 2nd partition. So no problem with space and still able to use micro sdcard for my files. I did lose the 1gig 1st partition and can't use that.

I know nothing about modding apart from I would like to do mine as well
Its rooted, but that's as far as I got
I have 4 of these unlocked in Australia that could really benefit from it so will be following with interest

Yeah, okay, that's basically what I did. I ended up just making a 100mb first partition, since it doesn't do anything, and using the rest of a 4gb sd card I had lying around for the second. I have an 8gb SD, but it's in my old phone and full of apps, and I'm too cheap to buy yet another card.
I haven't had any problem putting images or anything else on that second partition(along with app files) for whatever reason. Maybe because I'm using Root Browser or maybe because I use QuickPic app for my photos, I dunno. Some weird behavior with some apps, and I wouldn't need this at all, probably, if I could pull the trigger on just deleting Chrome and all it's junk. Between it and Facebook app, there goes my one gig of app storage. (I hate Chrome on Android, at least on this device it's completely useless. I use Puffin and stock browser, but need some Chrome features and my saved data, etc)
Latest Firmware
I just found out there is a recent update for the Pantech Element (P4100). It was a Security Maintenance Release.
FW: JWUS11162015
OS: Android 4.0.4
Here's the amount of storage available with a fresh factory reset. I have not tried to root it, yet. Nor have I tried to install a Recovery

Not successful rooting it with the existing instructions out on the internet, which is expected since it is now Android 4.0.4
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery cwm-5.0.2.7-pororo.img
fastboot flash boot element-boot-insecure.img
fastboot reboot
Successful Root with TowelRoot for the firmware I cited above!
