Qn: Better to cook with OEM or CAB? - General Questions and Answers

i need to know from those expert chefs. is it better to cook programs via OEM or CAB? does having more OEMs causes the rom to lag? other than pagepool, how do you boost the speed of a rom? and does having a pagepool of more than 32Mb causes some stability issue?
reason im asking is because im trying to customise a custom rom. manila-wise, it works well, except... i have no idea why my photo-video album from the manila lags for a very very very long time before i can select different folders.
i hope to get some answers cos it's kinda difficult getting straight answers around here. yes i know google, forum search etc etc. which i already did. im not asking to be spoonfed. im asking to be taught how to fish so i can fish on my own. bit by bit.
and lastly, i think it isnt fair that most new custom roms are locked. it's like telling everyone, 'take it or leave it'. just as what microsoft did. which is why i badly need to customise a custom rom. but thats just my 2 cents worth.

anyone????

go to your device's section, and consult with one of the chefs there by PM or by mail... that's what i suggest.

lot of us have flashed our devices at least 10 times in the last month. can you provide us more details about this rom, I'm getting tired of wm6 roms.
Thats the same problem with me!!
i think thats problem with everyone we need to settle down but how long ???? i hoop that someone has two device and will test it and provide us with more information
It's been a while i'm using mun-rus WM6 which it's rom build version is 17xxxx and it's fine, all of other ROMs are 15xxxx build and don't have much different in performance and types of bugs.
Can someone post the MS build number from the ROM?

It's the same as V1 to now, it's just improved with some reg fixes, other splash-screen and some progs.
It's not bad, loaded with stuff, ringtones, todaythemes etc.
It's a ROM for the lazy people, like me, although I'm using now the mUn's fixed version which is good..

Im still working on the ultimate fixed version of mUn's rom. Getting a little frustrating. LOL
Yeah that's funny, "tired of WM6 ROMs"
I flashed V.5 like 2 days ago and there's very little info on changes, i haven't seen any..beside Ferrari thing
what i noticed stuff like MMS composer, Voice dial (or voice commander) biuld's are different(older) comparing to mUn's
And there REALLY Should be some sort of guide/comparison for people who honour and appreciate work of all cookers out there, but ..just want to use SOLID Rom. knowing the differences, and having them presented clearly in a spreadsheet comparison would be most helpful.
Because there are guys wanting ALL The latest, and MOST STABLE.
At present WM6 have some serious flaws but only to people who happen to use WiFi, and MMS's(which is about 80% od wizard owners ; ) ) alot. So choosing right rom "distribution" now is next to IMPOSSIBLE, less choosing "stable" one.
Maybe "wiki" ought to serve this purpose, thus far we are stuck with "well known" cooker names producing unstable roms.
As much as i would like to thank all cookers, and community of Wizard experts, i am stuck with finding out more and more suprises after flashing each new rom distro.
Now Farias' suprised me by not being able to use contacts from sim card ..
Beside comparison of components numbers(like rom built date, prog. ver.) there should be shor explanation as of why cooker have chosen to include older, or newer version of specific soft., and next column : possible problems encountered by users..
I know that if i talk so much i should do it myself : ),
but short on time, and knowledge of figuring as to what format, type of database would be needed for "central Repository", or "future/bug" tracking wiki..
I think that it could help out rom cooks(ers: )) or us. When compiling they could make choice based on this centrall rep. of futures/problems of certain prog. versions: like battery plugin.. beta 2, or beta 3, what difference,
now it takes several hours to find out diffs., possible problems, and make concious choice: with least risk as to what WE want (in terms of functionality) and whether stability is at premium to us.
I don't agree
If you cannot do simple registry changes to show sim-contacts or cannot configure MMS you don't want to update your ROM.
Because if you cannot find the solution in this forum you probably cannot find the solution when you brick your phone.
I think this forum is for people with a bit more interest than the average phone-owner.
And in the end there is always somebody prepared to help.
I don't agree either.
It's not the forum's responsibility to rate and/or categorize each rom as it comes out. The threads for each rom or additional threads where users place their experiences with these roms.
Some chefs create basic stable roms, some stable with loads of ram, some super-fast with very little ram & etc. You choose the rom that works for you. Is there a best rom...NO; what counts is what you want and works for you.
If you just want what manufacturers give you, then you're in the wrong place.
Flashing these roms are not a right....it's a priveledge!!!
Ok guys,

1. it is fact that it IS A Privilege, and to that I AM gratefull that i have right to be using it.
2. i think there is no point in wasting of time researching over and over The SAME THINGS.., that i've seen for last year.
You(forum) can either give to users something more clear, or make them seek info over and over again, causing for stupid questions to arise, when someone may not have time to read through 64 pages of...\
and that's just one thread...
3.would it hurt to spend less than 5 hours doing research, and not finding what you originally intended, of ... oh well, "time is money, so don't waste it honey"
4. ok, so it is "simple" registry edit to fix sim card not being read by wm6 contacts app. It's just that it is basic funcionality, and when it comes to "names" it shouldn't happen, I believe that most of us would be glad to beta test them for our gurus' and reprizent' Xda-DEV cookers to the world RIGHT! Yo,
5. MMS .. well, when all config is right, and i have narrowed it down to radio rom version in "synchronisation error" deal, it's hard not to be average user, or even neglecting one, when You YOURSELF are unableto fix radio rom..
less even M$oft ain't touching many problems..
is WAITING, and Wa$ting of time a solution for you? ... digging through pile of wm6 roms to find one with LEAST Errors../ after which to be left out without basic functionality expected from phone..

Dude.....we're not supposed to have these roms.....!
This is why we have to go somewhere else to download them.
A comparison chart for something that we are not supposed to have....need I say more.
A comparison chart would be nice though but these roms don't work the same on every device.
Example: several roms were said to have incorrect values on the touch keyboard...I have never experienced this where others have.
Constructive feedback: IMO I beleive that's what everyone who installs a rom and discuss their experience is contributing to make the installed rom better. Some have mishaps and need help but a majority try to make the rom better. Not everyone can create cab files and discover what reg edit is best...those who can supply while those who can't, test.
If you start a comparison chart, I'll join in. PM me with what you got.
As far as making a clean rom....I'll help with that too.
Orwells WM6 is a clean version....that's where alot of these roms originate from.
You and I, we have our own opinions and are able to discuss them, thats what makes a forum.

Now that I've been on Faria's "the real thing" and mUn's, I don't think I could go back to any of the previous WM6 roms. MBE was decent after a lot of tweaking, but these two new ones are far above more complete and stable than anything I had previously.
I'll wait for the Faria vanilla and the nottoosmart stripped and fixed mUn ROM. I think both of these will be the standard for some time...
You know what i would say the same, as close to the top. What is so different from all the WM6 rom really!!! We are getting 20 million new ones everyday!!!
I am running faria's WM6 rom, and that is the only i have flashed, cus i dont trust any other!!! Looking at what people are saying i would say it was the best cus it does not have so many problems!!!
At it is so much fun to find solutions to problems, if we did not have that we would be so bored!!! Think of your self as beta testers for Mircosoft!!! Cus they dont do any work but the Roms are getting so much better!
I tested/flashed all ROMs uploaded on my Folder (IW25NT), so at least I know what I'm talking about.

So have I..........
And I'll keep on doing that, if I don't like I'll just restore the old setup.
What is annoying here lately, is that if someone posts a ROM, you'll either get all kinds of remarks how bad this ROM is (if it is not from 1 of our XDA Xprts), or remarks like before posted.
That one of the reason's why I stopped posting if I updated my Folder.
I'll continue to upload, just look ones in a while.
this rom is very fast, stable, low battery consumption!

best wm6 ROM

has anyone out there tried multiple ROMs for WM6? I'm looking to move to something different, i've been having a lot of trouble w/ the faria one that i'm running. Just glitches here and there, looking for something more reliable.
Anybody know what is the closest to the real mccoy release of wm6 that cingular offers?

Cingular doesn't offer WM6 for the Wizard. Your best bet is to just try a few out and see what you like best. Asking which one is the best is very subjective and has been asked about 100 times already with about 1000 different answers.
Good luck!
ok...let me try to rephrase, would u happen to know of any WM6 roms for the wizard that are as close to the wm6 for the 8525 as possible. Without a ton of addons or anything. I want to have something that runs as smooth as possible. Something that is as close to the "stock" 8525 if you will...
you should try wrcx1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322404)
As usual...READ READ READ! And deliberate what fits your needs...

If you think "a ton of addons or anything" makes a rom slow, you are mistaken. I think you will find most of the custom roms here faster than stock Wizard (8125) roms and they have lots more functionality. Having addons does not take away from your phone's storage space or memory. Only if you turn on the addons will it take away from your phone memory (but just like it would if you installed it yourself). Remember that the ROM has a dedicated area of around 60MB of space. If you put a 40MB rom in that space, you don't gain the 20MB, its just lost on the Wizard. So personally, I pack my roms to fill that space and give the most options built in for people to use.
But there can be a price with having a packed rom. Some have seen slower boot times and slower access to the \Windows folder when you try to use a file manager. But I've never seen it impact overall phone performance itself.
Just had to point that out, as it seems to be a common misconception that people have.

thanks for trying to be a jackass about the whole thing, you're attempt to help is dualy noted...
but to set everything straight, i have searched. Faria is by far the best working ROM that i've used thus far, and i've spent hours searching for ROMs and i'm already on my 5th one. So just because i have a newbie title on this forum doesn't that i dont know how to use forums, because i've been using them for the better part of the last decade. So please dont past judgement like that, it just shows your ignorance not mine.
One a more sunny note, ammarr thank you for that link, i haven't come across that one yet, and this will be my 7th try on a wm6 rom. Who knows maybe my phone is defective, but it runs the cingular wm5 rom just fine. hope i dont have to go back to that....
ammarr thanks for that link, i've added a few things to it like registry editor and such, but i really like the layout of this one. On top of that, its working well...phone not freezing, not dropping signal etc. Thank again.
well here's my 2 cents, if you liked whiterats rom, try bhoydegets "octavio 4" its an improvement and comes in different pagepools, try it for your self, here's the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=323485
hey,
how would you say its an improvement? I'd like the touch scrolling and today plugin but dont want to mess up my wcrx1 which is working great. Page pools is not an issue since you can change them over activesync. I'm already running wrcx1 with 8mb pp.

I'm glad I can be a jackass and of some assistance.
You stated you're on your 5th flash.....there's over 70 Roms out there and new ones coming every week. You've done nothing! Faria's Rom was released about 3.5 months ago or longer. There has been alot of changes since then....but if you did some real research....you'd know this.
If you feel Faria's Rom is the best....stick with it, modify it & make it your own.
P.S: This is a developer's forum...not a user's forum.
It's not my job to police this forum; people are happy to assist with specific questions or issues as they arise.

1. I agree with dwny. This is a developers forum. This is not a forum for developers to help nubes flash new ROMS. I'm pretty tired of the "If I flash this ROM, will I lose my programs?" questions. I must see that at least a few times in every new ROM announcement thread. Most of the dumb questions come from people who don't contribute anything but "Works great. But can you add [insert freeware software request here] in the next one?"
2. If you're going to be a wise-ass, please spell all of your words correctly and use the correct context. It may not help you be more correct, but it will at least save you the humiliation of not knowing and understanding your native language. The correct phrase is "Duly Noted." And as a sidenote, dualy isn't even an actual word.

Head to head comparisons/review of major cooked ROMs - anyone done one?

Hello all,
Having recently upgraded my Hermes to a Kaiser (well actually a AT & T Tilt) and re-flashing it with Schaps 4.30 Rom i have since noticed a sharp decline in performance (compared with my Hermes).
This lead me to look around for something 'better' coming across Duttys cooked ROM and has prompted me to initiate this thread.
Has anyone done a 'review' of the major cooked ROM's out there or even better, put them head to head?

Be aware that it will be your full-time job as new ROMs come out almost every 2-3 days.
well lets put it this way. im sure many of you have tried several different roms on your devices.
can anyone shed some light our input into the major rom players?
answer this question and you will get it
Do you like apple or orange ?
They are both fruit but you cannot head to head compare them.
Beside that newer rom is likely but not necessarily to be better. Try around with different Rom and radio to get your favorite one. Well, It takes about 15 mins to flash so you can pretty much try all the Rom in here in few days. In the end, if you are not happy , do some extensive research so you can brew your own.
Dutty Rom is popular and pretty suitable to start up.

i like both !! so that still doesnt answer my question.
unfortunately, i currently have a pretty hectic schedule so i cant really afford to flash and re-flash my unit all the time. in addition it would take quite a while as i have quite a few additional programs on there.
i am under the impression that Dutty and Schap and the two major players here?
things i need to consider:
- speed of operating system
- ease of use
- stability
- usefull applications

Sleuth would also be considered a major player here...
In regards to what you want in a ROM, all signs are pointing to Dutty's except for the useful applications. Just add em yourself though...
His is the fastest ROM I have ever used for any device, including the Hermes...
However, opinions are like assholes....

No, I dont look for reviews of roms. I flash them and if I dont like them I flash a different one. I have literally tried every single rom (that is in English unlike ATW who even tries foriegn languages) to try and find the one that works best for me. I suggest you do the same and quit asking for someone to do the work for you. The reason I say this is that I can't tell you how many times this same question has been asked. You are definitely not the first nor will you be the last. It seems as though it comes up at least once a week. So, read the first post of the rom, if you dont like what you read or see then move on to the next. Either that or do as most of us do and flash it.

We don't need to scour the internet looking for reviews. We just read the threads in the forum and test ourselves. All the information you will ever need is found in these forums.

Yup... with this guy... it's very easy to use PIM backup and your storage card to backup your vitals before flashing. Sure it's tedious, but that's how this all works. People will review different ROMS on different criteria and it's up to you to find what makes you happy.

Smart man , you want to pay the least to get the most .
1st fold
You want to do as little as possible, so we have to do more to cover your work ? > Fail
2nd fold
There is no "we" and "as users" , should be " I " " as a lazy leecher"
And there is also no point in promoting ROMs discussion. We can talk all day without coming up with any thing good but potential conflict.
> fail, again
I dont know about your schedule but my is also packed too ( ask a pre-med, senior Bio student) . And most of peeps here also get a thing call "life" . If I can do it , you can too. Flashing a Rom is not rocket science that would take a life time to do.
How about this, consider flashing your piece of device a relaxing activity for your break . I would be less pain and more joy. If you dont find flashing , trying and using Rom fun , why bother asking here.
p/s for the amount of time finish 2 posts , you could have already flashed a cool Rom lol.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I'm afraid the only way to work out the best ROM for you is to test them all. If a ROM is unstable, you'll be able to tell pretty quickly from scanning the thread and what is one man's "useful applications" is another man's "bloatware".
The best analogy I've seen is with cars - to some people the perfect car is a sports car, to others it's a people-carrier, everyone's needs and uses are different. Also, as most of the ROMs are built on the same two or three OS builds, you're comparing the cars with virtually identical engines, so differences will be minor*.
My suggestion is make a list of what you use on your phone, then decide if you want a fast ROM (in which case flash a lite ROM and add the bits you want via cabs) or an easy ROM (in which case flash a ROM that's got the most of the things on your list).
You will never get everyone to agree on the "best" ROM simply because there isn't one that is head and shoulders above the others*, just optimised by and for different chefs.
*No offence intended to the great chefs on this forum! I know how much work you must put into your ROMs and I'm not trying to belittle that, just get the point across.
Also, it doesn't hurt to take the little bit of time that is required to make an SDConfig.txt file for the User Customization that most of the ROMs utilize now. That in and of itself is a huge timesaver. Take advantage of that, and someone else also posted PIM Backup, which can also help aid in moving from one ROM to another.
Use one ROM for a week, see how you like it then move on if you want to. That's more or less what I've done. And I've found what I've liked.
JUst another case of someone wanting to be fed.
Was it Karhu who would do benchmarks of all the ROM's in the Hermes forum? Talk about intensive... but again, strictly numbers, meant as an informative comparison of different things.
I think I got your thoughts...
I wanna a ROM table for comparisons... I can say its very difficult to make
1) ROMs change every day... its a rough job to keep it update
2) ROMs are like taste. You like a XYZ ROM because its faster but a friend may like a BCD ROM because it runs that app faster.
3) There ia a lot of apps within those ROMs that make they different. Comparing works if all ROMs carried the same stuff.
4) There are no tops ROM... there are populars ROM
I'm looking to flash my kaiser too but I allways got confused too with different cooked ROMs.
I suggest you to read all of your interest, ask them for any detailed spec. Install the HardSPL for Godsake and try it.

Modding Cooked ROMs (?)

Ok, so if this is posted elsewhere then someone kindly point me in that direction BUT the question is: If I have a cooked ROM from myself or another chef is there an easy way to break the ROM down and add in what CABs/OEMs I want for a more customized ROM? I know many may think that stealing a chef's work but truth be told there are a LOT of really great ROMs that I've tried but sometimes there are certain odds and ends that I don't ever use that take up unnecessary space and bog down my Kaiser. Nothing nearly as bad as the original AT&T bloatware(!!!!) but still! lol xD
So yeah, I've toyed w/ BuildOS but I've only made seriously outdated ROMs () and have about decided to give up my attempts at serious cooking since there are 50,000 new bases out eek and I just can't seem to keep updated but on that note, if someone knows a good place to find some WM6.5 cooking info then that'd be appreciated too! =D
But the original question still stands, any way to break down the OS and edit the guts?
Thanks in advance!
By the way...
I have searched around for this but I haven't found a seemingly definite answer (at least not a clear and easy one lol)
Just didn't want anyone stumbling across this and being all like "Search!!"
Anyways, thanks again in advance!
sure you can break down a chef's ROM and add your own stuff in by extracting the ROM and then putting in your own packages or setting CABs to run during the customization process but don't take a Chef's work add some stuff and then release your own ROM.
what a nice dream !
the only thing you can do is break down the ship rom as it's unlocked, or else wait for the chefs to release their kitchen like I did. you can find my kitchen with build 20765 for kaiser at pdaviet.net, under the box pdaviet rom for Kaiser
good luck !
Lol
Yeah, I didn't plan on releasing it as my own =P
Basically I have the Phoenix 2 and think about the new PDAVIET ROM but P2 has some quirks that I'd like to tweak.
So, I've dumped my ROM straight from my phone so guess I need to head on over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337066 and go from there, ey?
And any ideas why the Kitchen Wiki hasn't been updated to include Titanium info? I love how outdated the Wiki has become lol All 2006-early 2008 stuff =P Crazy how much has changed since WM6
Haha, Thanks!

Lol How funny. I posted my last message before noticing you added this. Lol I mentioned your ROM and then come back to check this thread and BOOM! you're posted ABOVE me lol I love it lol
Anyways, speaking of love, I think I love you lol basically I've been looking for updated kitchens and if this base is the one I've been looking for then I'll be ecstatic!
Off to look @ it I go! xD
Thanks fellas!
You should be able to break it and play with it in kaiser kitchen as long as rgu files are intact! In some cases, you might not be able to do it in kaiser kitchen, for those ROM's I used ROMDonald's (mod to kaiser) to break down and add stuff! But some of them like PDACorner, cant break them down no matter what!
Also there is a htc ROM tool, that tool lets you delete and add stuff without even breaking it down! I havent tried it myself, but I have heard it works.

Well, if you're talking about PDAViet P2, isn't that 6.5?
Because Phoenix II is 6.1...
Clarification
Yeah, P2 is 6.1 and the new PDAVIET is 6.5
I'm currently using P2 and really love it but I've bogged it down w/ extra stuff and my TouchFlo is constantly locking up and bugging me. It drives me crazy that I have to soft reset like I do and that it deletes a lot of my texts when I do so. I can only imagine that when Tmail is open and my SMS is onscreen and my phone locks up that when I soft reset that it erases all the texts since the last soft reset. It's seriously irritating. Not the ROM's fault but would like to pull chunks out to give me more room and speed.
I've played w/ a 6.5 ROM before and had mixed feelings about it. If I was truly worried about speed then I'd flash a simple stock-based ROM w/ the original HTC Home but it's ugly I seriously prefer M2D or Titanium.
Anyways, I dont expect the chefs to make personalized ROMs for me and seeing as I epic fail at cooking ROMs from scratch then I'm just trying to dig around for ways to incorporate personalization to the actual ROM instead of manually installing all of the additional stuff.
MedKid: I can't read (Vietnamese?) the instructions under your Kitchen posting on your site and Yahoo obviously isn't smart enough to auto-translate it since it popped an error when I asked it to translate. So. Care to translate for me, please?
Well alright folks, I appreciate it. I'm going to go see if I can tinker w/ MedKid's Kitchen for a few to see if I can get this thing running. I'll keep you guys updated. Maybe if I can make something out of this then starting from scratch wont be so hard from now on.

Maybe you should bring your problems over to PDC for the crew to analyze? And your thoughts for P3. Because your issues with P2 are NOT normal.
PDC
Just left from over at PDC but may stop back by and give lay this on the PDC crew.
Like I said, I've loaded my phone down so it's very likely the TF issues are solely caused by lack of operating memory to the point of a lock-up. It IS Windows-based, after all lol
Does anyone remember the "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error? Yeah, think my lock-up is the WinCE version lol
It's wonderful, it really is.
Anyways, it'll either be today or tomorrow when I lay this on PDC.
Thanks for the help ::thumbs up::
It all depends on how the ROM was build as to wether you can dump it and re-build it with your own tweaks. Chefs can protect their ROMs to prevent dumping, in which case you will find it hard work.
It's probably easier just to add CABs to the cooked ROM.
Ta
Dave
you just need to find out how to create os.nb.payload from any htc ship rom for kai ser or any of my roms, put this os.nb.payload in to ROM folder in my kitchen and that's it, you have a full kitchen 20765 for kaiser. Every tools you need is there in my kitchen, but you'll have to install net cf 2.0 and microsoft C++ 2008 into your pc (both of them are found in that thread of pdaviet)
after you have a full kitchen, just double click on build rom.bat and wait 5 minutes, voila your rom ruu_signed.nbh is created in FLASH, now plug in your cable and flash it to your device.
google "bepe new kitchen tool" to take a look at his flash tutorial on how to create a rom, how to use this new kind of kitchen
that's all you need, I can not explain more, you have to try and look for the answer , google is your good friend in this case.
Now that aughta work!
Thanks Med. I've currently got Anyrl's latest kitchen, your kitchen, BuildOS and one other, I think. And I've yet to make a half-decent ROM since WM6 some time back in early 08 lol I'm disappointed in myself.
Anyways, I appreciate all the help from you guys. This might be a handy thread to keep open but if a Mod feels like it then feel free to close it.
Thanks again!

M2D ROM compatibility

hey folks, i've been hunting around and trying ROMs for quite a while now. and for about 2 months i've been trying to get my hands on a particular ROM. what i'm looking for is a WM 6.5 ROM (NOT 6.5.x; i want the start menu in the top left corner, not the bottom left) that is absolutely BARE NAKED, nothing but the operating system and absolute system necessities, and not much else, if anything. i have cabs for all programs that i use. one other stipulation is that i have WAlien's M2D and weather localisation cabs and i need a ROM that i can install this on. i've been trying to learn how to cook on my own, but i can't seem to find a learning friendly kitchen. and the instructions might as well be written in Chinese for all the sense i can make of them. too much technical terms used that i don't understand. i'd love to build my own, but it's just not an option right now. anyway, just wanted to know if anyone would happen to know where i can find a ROM that meets these criteria, or if some wonderfully kind chef out there might cook me one up? either one would make me friggin EXTACIC! i don't like the WM 6.5.x roms, not sure why, i just don't seem to mesh well with them. anyway, if anyone could help me out, i would really appreciate it. also, if anyone could tell me what particular builds will take to WAlien's M2D cabs, that would really help in my search. i know the 23xxx builds are all the 6.5.x that i don't want, but i really don't know about any others. i believe i had a 21550 build that was running M2D with Home Weather (my big concern), but the ROM was over 100 MB, fluffed up with all sorts of programs that i would never even use. by the way, i'm using an HTC Tilt/Kaiser/Tytn II, whatever you want to call it. love the phone, but can't seem to find just the right ROM, or a decent kitchen to teach myself on. no idea what SYS or OEM files are, where to put them, what they do, or anything. i just know that they are used to cook ROMs. anyway, if some kind soul could take the time out of their day to enlighten me, i'd love to get a better grasp on this stuff. i'd actually like to take some classes on the subject, but i'd rather get my feet wet first, so i'm not going into it blind. thanks for your time, even if you can't help me, i appreciate you taking the time to see if you might be able to help.

You may want to consider using spaces when you post, like having paragraphs
If you feel adventurous enough, head over to ppckitchen.org and get your kitchen and cook it yourself with all the bells and whistles (or lack thereof) that you wish.
Alternatively, go to the Kaiser section and look for something there.
FYI, the different UI has nothing to do with 6.5.X, but rather with the COM branch. You are looking for any rom of the COM2 branch (usually anything above 218XX (but always remaining in the 21XXX branches) will have the start menu on top).
I hope this helps you some.
yeah, i tend to ramble a bit. anyway, i tried ppckitchen. thouroughly unimpressed. i produced 3 roms, 2 of which worked, however, they weren't what i was looking for. didn't have much expericence at the time, and now that i know what i'm looking for, PPCK's BuildOS runs all the way through the rom building process then gives me an error. i sit there for X amount of time picking and choosing all my stuff, then sit for 10-15 more minutes, and now after that, it just gives me an error every time. it's been a while since i even thought about messing with it again. i can't even remember exactly what the error message was. thanks for the input though.
so i need to look for builds with 21xxx then. sweet. that will help narrow down my search at least. just basically looking for something with no bells, no whistles, that will run the M2D cabs from WAlien. i had a rom a couple weeks ago that met all the criteria except for the bells and whistles, but i've been flashing so many roms looking for the right one, that they pretty much all say "KAISIMG" now and it's about impossible to remember which is which. plus, they pretty much look the same once loaded, so i don't really know until i get the results when i try to install M2D. anyway, thanks for the help with the build numbers. i'll try searching those.
i actually just figured out the other day that the 23xxx builds are the ones with the start menu in the bottom left.

23xxx, 28xxx, 25xxx, 24xxx, 22xxx... they all have the new UI. The latest one available for the COM2 branch is the 21892.
What kind of error messages are you getting out of PPCK? They just released a new update the other day, which deals with some error messages (among other things).
Lastly, what I do with the roms is to first create a folder with the rom number and who made it and then drop it in there. You may want to consider doing that
wasn't aware of the 22xxx ones, but i knew 23xxx and up were the ones that i'm not looking for. hey, i found a rom that will serve my purpose for the time being. came across the Shifu v4.2 Rom last night. it's a 21854 build. works with WAlien's M2D with Home Weather cabs also, which was my biggest concern. thanks for your help. i think i'm gonna be content with this one until i learn how to cook my own. it's got a bit of "fluff" stuff that i don't need, but it is still rather small compared to some of the other roms of similar builds that i was checking out last night. thanks for all of your help, bud! i really appreciate it.
oh, and about PPCKitchen: i'm not sure, but i'll try to run it when i get home. it's been quite a while since i tried using it, but i do remember that the day it started screwing up on me was the same day that i downloaded updates for it. maybe the updates messed it up. i'll go home and check for more updates and see if it'll run or not. i'll keep you posted. all i remember was that when the error came up, it made a loud sound that scared the crap out of me. forgot that i still had the volume turned up loud from watching movies the night before! hahaha! my wife even jumped, and she was in the kitchen, the REAL kitchen, not the rom kitchen. anyway, i'll check on that and get back to you if it's still giving me problems.
