HI,
I have a WM 6.1 phone and am trying to install KDKobes HTC Footprint CAB.
I however have a Asus p320 which only has 5 MB of storage left in main memory. It however has lots left on storage card.
Is it possible to change the directory used by the installer so that it can use the storage card instead of the main memory? As I do not have enough space in main memory, the application setup does not run to completion

I had a friend who had this problem.I wonder who can help? With my O2 wizard i used to be running short of rom space ie storage memory as it had only 32mb left at factory default settings. My friend is running short of Program memory.ie ram space.
She is using eten m600+ that had 180mb storage for user and only 30mb program memory for user left at time of factory default settings.(when Bought from the shop)
original specs state 256mb rom and 64 mb ram.
after installing many programs the ppc still had about 125mb(excessive and redundant for running programs) left in storage and only 10 mb left in program memory.
Problem is certain programs like mapking, imap, agenda fusion(3000 contacts) consumes about 10 mb of program memory to run. then there is insufficient program memory to run a 2nd program at the same time.
If only we can shift like in my case 10 to 20mb from storage memory to program memory the the etenm600+ ppc would be wonderful.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO THIS?
She has also a miotech A700 with about almost the same programs installed. The miotech factory default program memory is also left with 30mb when purchased. HOWEVER with almost the same programs installed the program memory left is about 25mb.THERFORE on miotech there is no problems to run multiple programs concurrently.
Question:
1.What cause the difference in usage of the program memory?
2.What to do to ensure that the program memory is not used up during installation of programs?
3.Are we able to see the Program memory to identify which of our programs are occupying the space?
4.Can we do anything eg to shift the programs that occupy the space in program memory to storage memory or storage card( like the way we are able to shift certain programs from storage memory to storage card by shifting the programs from the Program files in Main Memory to Program files in storage card therby freeing the storage memory)
Any insight into this would be much appreciated. At this point manufacturers had yet to increase ram ie program memory from 64mb up to 128 or 256mb as had been done for storage memory ie rom in the case of eten600+ had been increased to 256mb from 128mb(Eten m600/o2 or dopod products)
With my O2 wizard i used to be running short of rom space ie storage memory as it had only 32mb at factory default settings
Ok, here is the memory explanation:
As you may or may not (I am not quite certain from your post) know on WM5 devices like the Wizard storage memory is ROM, or more precisely flash (NAND if you want to get technical).
Program memory is RAM (I think it's SRAM not sure).
Since these are two physically different types of memory there is no way what so ever to use one in place of the other. So no borrowing storage memory to run programs.
Even if it was somehow possible (which it's not) to use flash to run programs it would bring your device to a halt as its read / write speeds are much to slow.
On WM5 systems RAM (program memory) is used just like on PC exclusively for running programs. It can not be used for storage so there is no danger of it being wasted during installation.
I don't have an explanation regarding the ETEN vs MIO issue, but keep the following in mind:
1) 64MB is in reality reported as about 55MB (binary count difference), 10 - 15 of that is reserved by the system and as much as 5 more may be taken up by resident apps / services depending on the device and the provider.
2) Same program may use up different amounts of RAM under different circumstances and may have memory leaks which means the memory it uses grows over time even if you do not input more data.
Also check out this neat app. Its a really great tool if you want to see whats going on on your device.
I always install to my storage card but it seems that no matter what i do, my device memory keeps filling up! I ran critically low to 785 KB on a HTC Kaiser. i noticed that the programs put things in /Program Files on my device and on /Storage Card/Program Files
Questions!
In the memory app located in settings it says under the main tab that there is "Storage" and "Program". My "Storage" keeps getting full while my "program" has 39.31 MB free. What is the difference?
Can I simply place all the /program files folders over to my /storage card/program files folder and fix shortcuts or does the programs require to take space on my device itself?
I have NO pictures or videos saved on my device, only storage card, and save all attachments/etc to my storage card aswell. I have reflashed and ran memmaid and no use...
I have tried copying the program files folder over to my storage card. Have 40MB free now but all sorts of broken shortcuts. I have turned off "Shortcut To" in windows via a registry key but when I create shortcuts on the device the pesky "Shortcut to" is still showing. I have decided to flash to the lastest rom and let SAMACHI handle my cab installs...
Other Ideas:
Emails:
I sync my Hermes with a huge Outlook personal folder with lots of emails, tasks and notes. By default, email "bodies" are stored as binary files (*.mpb) in the \Windows\Messaging folder (may vary?). This folder can grow in size up to 10 - 15 MB depending on the number of emails. So in my case it wasn't enough to move the attachments to the Storage Card, I also had to move the emails "bodies" to the Storage Card. You can do this by moving the folder to the Storage Card AND changing the registry as explained in the WIKI (Change the location of email and attachments) to point the new folder location. BUT PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF EMAILS AND ATTACHMENTS IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS. Windows stores email headers separate from email "bodies" so if you move the "bodies" and the registry points to the wrong location, you might get empty emails and loose all data permanently if you sync. BE CAREFUL...Opera 9.5:
If you use Opera 9.5, you will loose another 10 - 12 MB in the \Application Data\Opera9 folder (may vary depending on opera version). In that case is better to run Opera from the Storage Card and tweak it so that its cache is also in the card.Themes:
Some custom made themes are in the 100 - 500 KB range and if you have many themes in the \Windows folder it can take a couple of megs of storage space. I moved all my themes to the card and keep only the one I use in the \Windows folder.
You could add more system memory by using a rom that has Ramdisk in it. In case you are not familiar, Ramdisk is a feature that basically uses Program memory as storage memory. It is similar to wm2003 and earlier, with the difference that you cannot manually allocate it. It has to be a hex edit in the rom itself. Now, regarding your question... program memory refers to the ram that is allocated for program use (as its name specifies). Basically, the more programs you have running, the lower this number gets. This is the memory resource of your device. Storage memory acts as your "hard drive", where you will place all your stuff (installation programs, pics, etc) provided that you do not send it to your storage card.
A lot of programs will install to device memory whether you instruct them to go in memory or not. Now, it should be perfectly possible to put the programs in the card as long as you rework the shortcuts...
I don't know which GPS program you are using (if any). But if you are, make sure that it is not downloading data into your device directly (things like maps, POIs, etc).
Try the first part of my post though. That might help you some.
Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend doing so though, you want all the ram you can get.... less ram equals less speed. If you have other space (such as your storage card) then use that.
I reccomend one of garmins rom, they usually come loaded with extra space (dk4 comes with like 110mb)
Certain programs have to be installed to the main memory, but if you install to the storage card.... you should only lose a couple kb to shortcuts and such...... something isn't adding up.
PS: The difference between storage and program:
Storage= Hard drive memory
Program= RAM memory
PSS: There is a program called clear temp you may want to try, it gets rid of alot of you temp files for you.
After flashing my device and reinstalling everything to the storage card, I have came to the conclusion that some programs install to the device anyway even if you select Install to Storage Card. I went from 110MB free down to 78mb, all in the program files folder! Time to be moving these and fixing shortcuts!
Hi.
I've been using Windows Mobile for about 10 months now, and have been very happy with it and blah blah blah...
One thing that I really don't understand, is the memory "settings" page.
It shows storage and program memory, as well as a seperate tab for my storage card. Could someone please explain to me what the storage memory and program memory are? I know they're both my internal memory (as in, not my SD card), but don't get why there's 2! I would have thought it makes more sense to just have a value for the "fixed" memory, and a value for removable memory.
Thanks in advance guys & gals.
John.
Storage memory is like the HDD on your PC, it's the where you store the data.
Program memory is the RAM, where the programs are loaded to run.
Thanks syqe - that makes sense. Typical Microsoft to call something we're all 100% familiar with by a different name!
It also makes me happy because it means I've got shedloads of space left on my internal drive
Thanks again.
Storage Memory is the memory on your device which is available for installation of new applications/data.
Program memory is somewhat like the RAM on your PC. when you run an application from your Storage Memory, it loads to your Program Memory to run, just like on PC, when you run an application and it loads to your RAM.
Storage Card memory is the memory on your storage card.
Now the question is how to get things off of your storage memory and onto your high capicity microSD card?
Also, how do you manage your Ram aside from the simple task managers on windows mobile phones? Is there a more advanced task manager that will show you what the hogs are and let you determine if they are worth it?

The best for that is SKTools... there is also dotfred task manager (this 1 is free) but I'd rather pay 30 bucks for SKTools.
i'm using samsung omnia 16GB with WM6.2. my phone main memory is 94.2mb for STORAGE & 96.26mb for PROGRAM.Both are almost fully used up.i have a lot of programs installed & i can't install anymore programs due to insufficient space.I've been looking for an application that can allow me to install programs on my 16GB storage instead of phone main memory.I'm hoping someone here can help me out.I've been searching & all i could find was ram cleaners.
SKTools will allow you move installed program data to My Storage.
I only have 1 app on device memory all the rest have been installed to My Storage.
good day.
Hi all here. I have a Samsung Omnia i8000 Icon running on Windows Mobile 6.1. This phone as defualt comes with 8GB memory plus I have added another 8GB MicroSD card to it boosting it to 16GB which is ample of RAM for what I need it for.
Recently I have been having probs with it and it keeps coming up with an error saying " Storage memory is critically low. If the storage memory is not increased, other progranms may not be able to start, use File Explorer to delete files that are no longer needed or move some files to the storage card:.
Now I also know when I ever download a software/file etc etc from the net, it goes into a download folder (by default) but I cannot seem to locate this folder, thought I am sure it does exist.
My other question here is when even I install a program and ask it where to install to, eg My Storage or Memory Card, dont know why but it seems to me the program is not installing there by default and keeps installing itself into main memory, can I switch or charge a program that is already installed in the main memory to the My Storage or the Storage Card.
Thanks
