how to partition SD in windows xp

I have seen it in several places on this forum that it is not possible to partition an SD card, or any other removable media in windows. This is incorrect. It is possible.
TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK

navigate to the folder you downloaded to and start the EXE. this app doesn't install, you just run in. You will notice a new icon in your SYSTRAY (the area by the clock). click on it once and you will see the icon changes to read "on".

Be a bit careful now because you have just turned on every greyed out option in windows. (this can be useful for all sorts of things but be carefull)
Go into control panel>administrative tools>computer manager.
on the left click on Disk management.
find your SD card. If there is already a partition on it right click and click on delete partition. This is usually greyed out but if you followed all the instructions it wont be.
Fourth...
right click again and click on New Partition. select primary in the wizard and leave the drive letter as is (or change if you really feel the need).
In the next screen you will be given the option of changeing the size, but... you guessed, it's greyed out. Never mind though, click there anyway and magically it is not greyed out any more. type in the size you want and format the partition.
you can now repeat step four for the next partition but when you get to the partition type all three options are grey, again if you just click on them they "come alive" because of windows enabler. There are various tools wich allow you to format to EXT2 from windows once the partition is created. I'm not gonna reccomend one becase I actually used one from panasonic and it was a bit rubbish, I dont know of a good one - go google and past here if you find a nice one.
I suggest deleting windows enabler at this stage as it is a dangerous peice of software. Keep the zip for future use!
You can also do this by editing the registry and skip the windows enabler part but I don't like the idea of giving directions for that, too easy to get it wrong and this is probably quicker, even including the download time for the enabler.

It works up to this step:
find your SD card. If there is already a partition on it right click and click on delete partition. This is usually greyed out but if you followed all the instructions it wont be.

This nifty little program does allow me to use the grayed out functionality, but still I cannot create 2 partitions on 1 SD card.
I have however been able to set the partition on my SD card to active with the help of this tool.

try paragon partition manager 9 to create partition for the sdcard..
or download ubuntu and you can format it using ubuntu.

Live CD? I'm not willing to completely ditch Windows just to partition a lowly SD card.

U don't have to ditch windows... ubuntu let's u dual boot, and then u can delete ubuntu when u want to

Still not interested and that doesn't answer my question really. Can formatting through an Ubuntu Live CD be successful? I have an Ubuntu Ultimate CD handy.

Thought u would have figured it out but u didn't.. the answer to your question is yes u can format using ubuntu... paragon worked for me easy.. but its up to on what u want to use to partition the sdcard...

Paragon (trial version) worked very well for me. It was intuitive and easy to do, I'm not the best with things like this but I didn't need more direction than "use Paragon, make EXT2 partition, no bigger than 2gb on Class 6 card".

I used Ubuntu but not running it on the live CD. Install it as a program in Vista. Then u can boot into Ubuntu after a restart.

[HOW TO] format sd card with paragon partiton manager

So I decided to make this small guide, on how to partitioning your sd card with paragon partition manager… There is many different ways, including a script an xda forum member created, and ubuntu as well.. But I assume paragon partition manager might be the best for all people who don’t know how to use Linux very much..

i think this is the easiest way. I did this to my card and took only a few min. def the way to go.

its a good guide, but i have a question everytime i try to format this way in paragon it says cannot create partition because all primary slots are taken, it says this when i try to resize or create new. any ideas?

Ok I resized my card using paragon my fat32 is 5gb and my EXT2 is 1.5gb. I went and tried to follow these instructions http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Haykuro_Apps_to_SD and for some reason I am not seeing the system/xbin/busybox folder.

how many partitiosn it list for the sdcard? sometimes when you use the usb cable then tend to mess up.. try creatign the FAT32 formatign it and than rezise and make teh ext2

i am still using JF build haven't tried Haykuro builds... sicne my phone is smooth im kinda of lazy to be recofniguring not sure how that works mayeb some oen else can help you.

funny ting, my pc never reads my sd card unless its through the phone. Ive tried the card on multiple systems, and i get the same results. so im forced to modify the card while its in the phone.

A few things here:
1. Unless you're planning on downloading every app ever made, you're never going to need a ext2 partition larger than 500mb, and even that is a LOT. I tried to fill my partition and managed to squeeze over 300 apps on there before I ran out of room...then I had to painfully uninstall them all cause I didnt feel like reformatting/reflashing/restoring.
2. Make sure you're using the right version of apps-to-sd. Haykuro's latest builds can be found here. The apps-to-sd versions are linked at the very top of the page.
3. The directories you're looking for are NOT on the sd card. They are only visible on the phone through adb. If you're not familiar with adb, do a quick forum search on how to set it up.

when uiu partition via usb cable the partition tend to mess up.. and not moutn o n the phone..
what you can do is, insert the sdcard check min my computer under management and assign a letter to th sdcard so the pc will read it mount it

I been trying to format the ext2 in my SDcard with Paragon Partition Manager but it saids I can use a demo version but it will not allow me to do the ext2 it saids I have to buy the full version. could someone tell me where to get the software that will work? thanks

[Q] - Move to SD enabled for (almost) all apps by?

Noticed today I'm able to move almost all of my apps to SD and not just the supported ones without having done anything but installing a rooted stock ROM and some standard goodies (SU, BusyBox, ROM Manager and Titanium Backup). Wondering if it was enabled by any of the above? the rooted ROM? or the stock ROM?

any takers?

Titanium backup, in "batch", has option to move all apps to either sd or internal memory.

It's not true A2SD. Just a bunch of buggy symlinks in /data and incomprehensible files in /sdcard/.android-secure that Google is trying to pass off as A2SD.

thanks. i rooted my phone right after the first stock boot so i couldn't tell if it came that way. It's just odd coming from 2.2 that everything all of a sudden is now movable, despite being not true a2sd.

I know. Just because a bunch of people find hitting "partition SD card" in ClockworkMod Recovery too difficult doesn't mean those of us who want the full potential of our phones unlocked should suffer, but we're stuck until someone finds us the mountpoint for sd-ext.

you all need to check out link2sd (free app) it will let you install apps to ext partition. I myself use it and have a 8gb ext3 partition with over 550+ apps/games installed. It also lets you decide if you want to move dalvikcache and library files to ext to save more internal space. I used mini tool partition app on my pc to create a larger ext partition then cwm would allow.

WIP Memory Address Listing
You need to know where to put and access the data, explicitly, in order to be able to use that location.
Android does this by using mount-points, which translates to the memory address where it should be looking for the information.
The thread I linked to is one I started so that we can discover them all, and what mount points correspond to what memory address.
Please make sure to read post number 8 in the thread by dhkr234 which spells out a good caution about using memory addresses directly and why you should be using mount points instead.
If anyone makes any headway in learning anything we don't know so far, please post it in that thread so we can get a comprehensive listing of mount points and what memory addresses they correspond to.
I've been extremely busy on other projects, but if someone is going to come by and make A2SD available for us, having a road-map for them to follow already sitting here will make their life a lot easier. ( ...and maybe encourage someone to do it because the info is sitting there. )
...and yes, it is specific to our device. Every device addresses the internal memory differently and that makes the mount-points unique to each and every device.

gotcha, so...piecing this all together, does that mean that a true A2SD shouldn't rely on symlink at all and Link2SD (what d12unk13astard recommended) is essentially just another hack?

The real A2SD is not "just another hack," it's one of the ORIGINAL post-root hacks pioneers like JesusFreke came up with. It allows you to put your apps on an EXT partition of your SD card, and you can resize that partition if your computer runs a Linux distribution.

In short, you can very easily write to the wrong memory address.
This means:
Installing some silly game over parts of both your boot partition and recovery partition would give you a cool slide-paperweight.
Mount points prevent this from happening by ensuring the data is written to the proper memory addresses.

[Q] SD-EXT on SGS4G with CM9?

I'm currently running bhundven's herring CM9 with no kernel modifications and CWM 6. I find that the internal storage for this phone is very low and only holds a small amount of applications, especially since many apps seem to not want to install at all (about 3/4 of the time I try to install things, I get either "Package invalid" or "Insufficient space available", which is extremely annoying and might be a separate problem).
Is there any way that I can get sd-ext to work on this phone with this setup? I'd rather not switch kernels (I'd love to get TWRP recovery but the flashable doesn't work for me and I don't want to switch kernels).

I prefer Mounts2SD, which lets you completely configure things. I was running PACman with cache and dalvik offloaded which worked quite well. And free is a good price.

That seems like it just switches the internal and external storage, not making an ext partition on the SD card. But can things like this really be done through an app? I thought these things had to be done through init.d or build.prop scripts.

The app creates an init file. Or so it appears. Like I said I don't use it. It seems that raze does and I'd defer to him here. Either his app or the one I linked should work fine.

Thanks (given) to both of you. And any ideas on what else might be causing the invalid packages when downloading from the play store? It happens even though I have much more free app space than I would need (eg. I had 119 MB of free space and a 30 MB app download failed).
EDIT: Just tried using Mounts2SD, but it couldn't find the sd-ext partition. Do I need to create that manually, and how?

Another way is to create ext4 partition (about 1G is usually enough) on you SD card with free MiniTool Partition Wizard and then use Link2SD to link apps/dalvik to this partition. I've been using it like this for a long time and it works fine. There are plenty of guides on the Web how to do that.

I used CWM or TWRP to create the sd-ext partition. You need to create that first somehow... if MiniTool Partition Wizard will do it without wiping the sdcard, that's better than recovery though.
My method was boot to recovery, mount sdcard, copy everything to computer HD, unmount sdcard, partition sdcard with 2 GB sd-ext (because I wanted lots of space, but I'd probably cut it down to 1 GB next time), mount sdcard, copy everything back from computer HD, unmount sdcard, reboot to system. Then launch Mounts2SD, pick what format you want the sd-ext in (FAT or ext2 are the fastest, but you can take ext3 or ext4 if you're not going to just disable the safety features) and what stuff you want moved over.
Edit: Just found this link, which I haven't used but which explains how to do the sd-ext with MiniTool... apparently MiniTool DOES still wipe the partitions though, so you may as well just use CWM/TWRP and make your life easier.

MiniTool will wipe the sd card to create the new partition as well. I wish there was a way to do it without wiping the card but there is not. So back that stuff up first.

I used GParted to partition my SD card. NO WIPING. Move, resize, add partitions.

Yes, but our herring kernel does not support EXT4 partition, I tried it myself
and it didn't work. I had to create EXT3 which is supported by almost all kernels.

Eh, my results varied. Worked fine for me with ext4. And worked fine for my wife as well.

The OP says he's running CM9. That's what I'm running but I use Proton kernel as CM9 kernel has a video bug, and ext4 partition works just fine for me. Strange if Bryan really removed ext4 support, it's just a line in the config file.

Successfully made the partitions last night but my phone won't mount the SD card anymore. Was trying ext3, I'll try ext2 and ext4.
EDIT: Fixed the problem, changed my partition to ext2 and set both partitions to "Primary" (not sure which one did the trick).

Make sure that you make the first partition Primary/FAT32. This will be your normal SD card. Just take about 1GB of space from it at the end. Then make second partition Primary/ext4 with size to the end of the card. You can try ext2/3 but I don't think it is really necessary.

MiniTool will NOT wipe your partition if you do it right.
dsexton had a guide posted on how to do it.

Is it worth making a swap partition? If I remember correctly it significantly degrades the life of the SD card (and microSD's are delicate as it is), and I don't know if it would significantly increase performance.

I also created 128MB swap partition, not supported too and not mounted.
I tried to used swapper2 app from the market, but it says not supported by
kernel. Now I lost that space till I feel motivated to format or repartition the SD
card again.
I am using hefe kernel btw on AOKP milestone 6-5.

No swap.

[Q] Can't move apps with Link2SD

I have tried to move apps to sdcard with Link2SD and other similar apps. It fails and says that I can't move them because my device has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage.

as far as I have found out (and been following this problem on and off since I got my plus a few months ago) there is no proper way to move apps to your SD card. Best solution (and the one I am using) is to partition your SD Card then use Link2SD to link apps on your SD. You can set it up to do so automatically for every new app you install. As for partitioning I found this guide the best since I'd never attempted it before but it works really well.

Well, my phone was rooted anyway but I think Link2SD needs it. As to why exactly it needs to be partitioned I can only tell you that when my card wasn't partitioned as suggested in the guide I linked then Link2SD wouldn't even offer to link the apps. I am no expert as I pointed out but this was a solution that worked for me. It may well be someone else found something better that doesn't require partitioning. To my knowledge doing things this way requires root AND the partitioned SD card.

Did you try Apps to SD? Ill be rooting very soon and see what happens. If none works then last stop would be to make partition.
Okay I did root my phone successfully. Still cant move apps. Now going to do this partition system. Hope it works !

Hello again brother. Same here. Before partitioning there was not any option to create link even.
I did the partitioning stuff did work. I can successfully transfer my apps into the ext2 partition i created. (Btw which partition format did you go with?)
How ever I believe folder mount is still a better option as it does not require you to create partitions and works directly such as you enter a brand new card without partition and move apps into card and then it links it. But the only drawback is you need to purchase the app :

I used ext4 for my partition. And I hadn't heard of Folder Mount until you mentioned it. Will have to check it out. Can you actually move stuff if you use that?

Well ext4 didn't work for me idky though ext2 did and it worked. But creating partitions is pure junk and it would reduce the life and speed of your card (its something i believe) so I deleted the partitions and brought my card into original format.
And yes man Folder Mount is something we need ! It does exactly what both of us want. Simply move all the app data from internal memory to external memory and as soon as you move you have empty space on your internal storage and external storage is occupied. Its simple and very clear and easy to use. Just 3 clicks i believe and its done. And another good stuff is it will show you how much an app is occupying internal space and then moves it into SD card and also doesn't show important system apps to move as moving them creates problem.
There's a free version to try which would allow you to move 3 apps only and if you want more then buy the app for 2 Dollars.
Its developed by @madmack. Do check it out. The sad part for me is I dont have a credit card nor Paypal is available in my country
And i need this app badly !
