how to partition SD in windows xp - G1 Android Development

I have seen it in several places on this forum that it is not possible to partition an SD card, or any other removable media in windows. This is incorrect. It is possible.
TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
First...
BACK UP YOUR CARD - YOU WILL LOOSE ALL DATA
Download windows enabler from softpediahere
second...
navigate to the folder you downloaded to and start the EXE. this app doesn't install, you just run in. You will notice a new icon in your SYSTRAY (the area by the clock). click on it once and you will see the icon changes to read "on".
third...
Be a bit careful now because you have just turned on every greyed out option in windows. (this can be useful for all sorts of things but be carefull)
Go into control panel>administrative tools>computer manager.
on the left click on Disk management.
find your SD card. If there is already a partition on it right click and click on delete partition. This is usually greyed out but if you followed all the instructions it wont be.
Fourth...
right click again and click on New Partition. select primary in the wizard and leave the drive letter as is (or change if you really feel the need).
In the next screen you will be given the option of changeing the size, but... you guessed, it's greyed out. Never mind though, click there anyway and magically it is not greyed out any more. type in the size you want and format the partition.
you can now repeat step four for the next partition but when you get to the partition type all three options are grey, again if you just click on them they "come alive" because of windows enabler. There are various tools wich allow you to format to EXT2 from windows once the partition is created. I'm not gonna reccomend one becase I actually used one from panasonic and it was a bit rubbish, I dont know of a good one - go google and past here if you find a nice one.
I suggest deleting windows enabler at this stage as it is a dangerous peice of software. Keep the zip for future use!
You can also do this by editing the registry and skip the windows enabler part but I don't like the idea of giving directions for that, too easy to get it wrong and this is probably quicker, even including the download time for the enabler.

It works up to this step:
find your SD card. If there is already a partition on it right click and click on delete partition. This is usually greyed out but if you followed all the instructions it wont be.
Click to collapse
I've got message like:
The operation is not supported on removeable media
Click to collapse
What now?

This nifty little program does allow me to use the grayed out functionality, but still I cannot create 2 partitions on 1 SD card.
I have however been able to set the partition on my SD card to active with the help of this tool.

Live CD? I'm not willing to completely ditch Windows just to partition a lowly SD card.

U don't have to ditch windows... ubuntu let's u dual boot, and then u can delete ubuntu when u want to

Still not interested and that doesn't answer my question really. Can formatting through an Ubuntu Live CD be successful? I have an Ubuntu Ultimate CD handy.

Thought u would have figured it out but u didn't.. the answer to your question is yes u can format using ubuntu... paragon worked for me easy.. but its up to on what u want to use to partition the sdcard...

Paragon (trial version) worked very well for me. It was intuitive and easy to do, I'm not the best with things like this but I didn't need more direction than "use Paragon, make EXT2 partition, no bigger than 2gb on Class 6 card".

I used Ubuntu but not running it on the live CD. Install it as a program in Vista. Then u can boot into Ubuntu after a restart.

Like i said, how can I create partitions on my sdcard? I've already tried the forum search and downloaded partition manager trial, but it doesnt allow me to create new partitions. So I was wondering, are there any other programs or ways to create partitions? Thanks a lot.
I'd recommend just getting an Ubuntu LiveCD and using gparted
This thread on how to partition, this thread on the JFv1.42 version to use when moving the apps to SD.
I strictly use Paragon Partition Manger..om my Windows 7 64bit machine... works great. Quick and easy to add Ext2 partitions.

Yeah this is what I use too. It is very easy and straightforward to create, resize, and remove a partition.

Yes, it can be done, as long as your firmware includes ext2 as a module (all current JF firmwares do)
I am interested in just creating an Ext2 so that I can run G1 apps off SD. Paragon Partition Manager cost 39.95 and the trial version does not allow creation of partitions. Are there other alternatives?

Yes it does. It's fully functional for 30 days in fact.
Okay, to clarify things. The new trial for Paragon does NOT allow you to create the partition. On their website they currently have V10, it NO LONGER allows a lot of the functions before. You need to go download Paragon Partition Manager 9.0, it works great and gets the job done. I had this problem before too.
Thanks Solemn and Mark for your assistance. I did search for Paragon Partition Manger v9. I found the "express" version on CNET. Unfortunately, it did not have an option for partitioning SD card. Any ideas as to where I might find the full v9 on a trial basis?

Read through everything entirely.
Go through the dummy version, just in case.
It just might work for you.

So you're just trying to partition your SD into 2 partitions? Why not create a win98 boot disk with fdisk on it and use fdisk to partition it? I can guide you through using fdisk if need be. You could also dl hiren's boot cd and it has partition magic on it. Both of these are freeware
While what I am attempting to accomplish maybe beyond my novice ability. What I am seeking to learn how to partition my SD card into FAT32 and EXT2. I've read through the link provided by Aprince. While it was bit overwhelming, I followed the "how-to-for-dummies" instructions without success. I must be omitting something in that instruction.
Shafty, I haven't the foggiest idea as to what you are talking about. lol. I might be willing to try that if it will in noway possibly harm my beloved G1 or PC.
I finally got it to work with the method in link provided by Aprince. My previous failed partition attempts screwed the SD Card. I reformatted. All is good. Thanks for your help.

[HOW TO] format sd card with paragon partiton manager

So I decided to make this small guide, on how to partitioning your sd card with paragon partition manager… There is many different ways, including a script an xda forum member created, and ubuntu as well.. But I assume paragon partition manager might be the best for all people who don’t know how to use Linux very much..
i wrote it on my blog, if is considered spam than illtry to put the images content directly in the post
http://nitropr.us/web/2009/05/08/format-sd-card-with-paragon-partition-manager/
hope it helps some one.. i know i know there is MANY ways for this.. but well sicne paragon question keep popping up and did not see a small how to with images for new users so hope it helps least 1 person
Thanks! That will be useful for many... this should be sticky along with the sapphire/magic port (after someone starts a new thread for the newer builds. 600 pages!) Or at least a wrap stick (a thread that contains many highly used threads like in the developement and hacking section under the main thread) would be useful.
i think this is the easiest way. I did this to my card and took only a few min. def the way to go.
its a good guide, but i have a question everytime i try to format this way in paragon it says cannot create partition because all primary slots are taken, it says this when i try to resize or create new. any ideas?
Ok I resized my card using paragon my fat32 is 5gb and my EXT2 is 1.5gb. I went and tried to follow these instructions http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Haykuro_Apps_to_SD and for some reason I am not seeing the system/xbin/busybox folder.

A few things here:
1. Unless you're planning on downloading every app ever made, you're never going to need a ext2 partition larger than 500mb, and even that is a LOT. I tried to fill my partition and managed to squeeze over 300 apps on there before I ran out of room...then I had to painfully uninstall them all cause I didnt feel like reformatting/reflashing/restoring.
2. Make sure you're using the right version of apps-to-sd. Haykuro's latest builds can be found here. The apps-to-sd versions are linked at the very top of the page.
3. The directories you're looking for are NOT on the sd card. They are only visible on the phone through adb. If you're not familiar with adb, do a quick forum search on how to set it up.

Try this. It is a program that worked great for me when Partition Magic did not. It is called Copy Commander. Burn to disc and boot. You can install from windows but it requires a key so it's limited. But it'll serve it's purpose. It works on XP and Vista.
in this case you might as well burn a ubuntu disk and partition under linux, which works 100% using the phone itself.
A point to note: most new sd cards are formated as a raw fat, i.e. without a partition table or boot sector. If this is the case, windows cannot create the partition table for you and you cannot create partitions using the build-in disk manager. Linux on the other hand is perfectly okay with this and will happily partition it for you.

Step by Step: How to partition ext2 with Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 - windows vers

HOW TO PARTION WITH PARAGON PARTITION MANAGER
**** YOU WILL LOSE ANY INFO ON THE SDCARD - PLEASE BACK UP IMPORTANT INFO PRIOR TO STARTING THIS PROCESS ***
**** these are instructions for Windows XP ***
***** if you are using Windows Vista - You need to change the permissions to Administrative in order for this to work - RIGHT CLICK ON THE START BUTTON AND GO TO ADMIN SETTINGS - even if you are the only user of the PC
have the sdcard in the card reader or in the phone mounted to the pc !!!!
OPEN PARTITION MANAGER...
CLICK ON PARTITION MANAGER IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER..
then click on the line that represents the sdcard, and right click on it, and choose format partition.. name the volume label - fat32
then click format..
computer might hang for a minute or 2, and then a popup will come up and say click GREEN CHECK to apply changes..
click the GREEN CHECK IN THE TOOLBAR AREA..
you will then see another pop up show - apply changes, choose yes, then you will see OVERALL PROGRESS AND GEARS TURNING.. LET IT PROCESS AND TAKE ITS TIME.. DONT HIT CANCEL..
when its done the cancel button at the bottom will change to Close.. click it..
AND THE FIRST STAGE IS DONE...
NOW ITS TIME TO CREATE THE EXT2 PARTITION..
Now on the Left side of the screen click Create partition.. and a screen will now show Create New Partition Wizard... it lets you chose which drive to partition ( make sure you chose the sdcard - it will be the one with the smallest volume/size of the sdcard in gbs.. should be on the bottom )...
HIT NEXT
now a slider will appear where it says new volume....
move the slider with the mouse, and make it how big you want it.. for ext2 partiiton about 500mb to 1gb is plenty... 500mb is good size.. ( size wont be exact so get it close to the size you want..
WHEN DONE CLICK NEXT...
NOW IT GIVES YOU THE OPTION TO FORMAT THE PARTITION...
CLICK THE PARTITION TYPE DROPDOWN MENU AND CHOSE LINUX EXT2... AND GIVE IT A VOLUME LABEL OF ext2.
then click next...
PC WILL PROCESS AND HOURGLASS WILL SHOW WHERE THE MOUSE POINTER IS.. AND THEN A POP UP WILL SHOW - SAYING -
COMPLETING THE CREATE NEW PARTTITION WIZARD..
CLICK FINISH...
THEN IT TAKES YOU BACK TO THE SCREEN SHOWING THE DRIVES, AND WHAT YOU CREATED, AND THE OPTION AT THE TOP WILL SAY - APPLY ... choose apply
THEN IT WILL ASK YOU TO - APPLY PENDING CHANGES AGAIN, choose yes..
NOW YOU WILL SEE THE GEARS WORKING AGAIN.. LET IT RUN TILL IT SAYS complete..
*it will take a few minutes to process.. let it run...
you might get a pop up for the sdcard drive as a open folder on the pc just showing that its done, just go back to paragon and let it finish running...
once complete you will get a pop up saying SYSTEM RESTART IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE OPERATION.. CHOSE RESTART THE COMPUTER...
You will see a paragon manager screen, that will hang for a almost a minute, and then the bar will fill saying 100 percent complete, press any key to reboot the pc..
AS LONG AS THERE IS NO ERRORS, YOUR DONE..
FORMAT COMPLETE..
PARAGON WILL START UP ON ITS OWN, AND SHOW THE PARTITIONS AS BEING COMPLETE..

If your having issues using paragon partition manager, and trying to make a linux swap partition, try these instructions for formating thru Cyanogens newest recovery
Formatting you SDcard
You only need to do this once folks..if you already have 3 partitions including linux-swap move to step 2
You need Recovery image 1.31 to do this folks!
To format card SD card with linux-swap WARNING!!! this will reformat you entire SD card!!
You can use the recovery console and parted to format SDcards with 1.31 folks, no more going through hassles you have the tools on you G1!...here is an example of how to do this in recovery console using parted
Example for 8GB card (specific value's may be slightly different use print to verify your total SDcard size~!
Reboot and enter recovery
Enter console
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7584
mkpartfs primary ext2 7584 8127
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 8127 8159
#print (to verify we have the 3 partitions)
Example for my 4GB card
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward * then grab a calculator to figure the exact amounts... as shown below that is an example..)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 3420
mkpartfs primary ext2 3420 3932
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 3932-3964
"End?" you need to place the last value for the linux swap eg.3964 for my 4GB card
#print (to verify we have the 3 partitions)
Next we need to "quit" parted and upgrade our ext2 partition to ext3
#upgrade_fs
Swap value is set to 30 currently, you can change this by modifying the "echo" value for swappiness in the a2sd.sh script
swap partition shouldnt be no larger than 92mb
ext2/3 partition shouldnt be more than 500mb ( more than that is too much )
( directions from a post by justanothercrowd )

It took me alot of time to figure this out. if anyone gets this problem just assign your sdcard a Letter. Example: E: Drive.
When i look at these tutorials it does not mention anything like that.

I used PM 10, it is very easy. However when the program wants to reboot it says there is an error, but I check that the ext2 partition is good by typing busybox df -h in terminal.
I've partitioned several cards now and they all work.
I found that doing a wipe then installing Lucid's rom.
I reinstall my applications from mybackup pro and downloading others from the market.
I test everything is working fine, then and only then I use the scripts that Lucid posted.
To recap ensure that busybox recognises the ext2 partition then wipe, install Lucids rom

thank you for the info..
was looking for the commands to verify that the ext2 partition is done correctly, and of course it verifies that busybox is working also..
I'm having a large issue with my new Micro SD card.
When using PM and my MicroSD in an SD adapter it allows me to format and create partitions successfully JUST FINE with my Sandisk 2gb which is probably a class 2 or just not a class at all...it doesn't say on the card at all.
BUT I just bought a Transcend 8gb Class 6 HC card and when using the SD adapter the computer recognizes it just fine to open and view files...BUT Paragon says its "Invalid" and won't allow me to format, partition, or anything.
I have no idea what needs to be done differently. It works just fine in the phone and moving files but Paragon won't recognize it or allow it to be modified.
I need some help please!!!
First of I'm new to all this so I'm a nood and I need some help massively I have trying to make this ext2 partition on ubumtu for months and always get an error message and a lost and found folder in the ext2 partition. Found these directions and finally make the partition w/ no error messages. Fat32 1st then ext2 2nd type busybox command so I think its done right. So I try to mkdir /system/sd/app for marcus directions on apps to sd to use his apps to sd2 app and I get error /system/sd/app read only. Why is that so? I look in pargan partitioner were I made the parition and there both still there. I would be greatfull if anyone can help out a nood like me [email protected]. I have been trying to get this ext2 partiton for months and today thought I did it correct cause no error messages and boy was I wrong!! Please anyone help !!

im have the same problems as her, i dunno why
I am running vista 64 and paragon profesional. I can get it to format and can get the ext2, but I can not do anything with the card. I try and reformat the fat32 and give it a letter for a drive but it wont take or if i format it and then create the ext2 it gives the ext the drive letter(both cannot have a drive) What gives and in the meantime I have to use the 1gig because although paragon recognizes the sd card my pc does not!
so i've done everything in the tutorial. and even the coding for checking busybox.
it doesnt show the ext2.
and i tried running the lucid commands
and it says ext2 is not mounted.
i get all the way to the ext2 part the very last thing
like mount/dismount and i get a error
saying to close a program or restart pc
cant close program because i dont know what it is so i click retry same error
i restarted pc 2 times
still same thign tried reformatting all over again what am i doing wrong? thanks guys!

Formatting SD to FAT32 (need help) =[

I been trying to format my sdhc 4gig, the problem is i'll right click format and it gives me a window stating that i have to enter a disk in the F: drive. . .
Basically I took it step by step.
a. plug in the usb from my comp to my phone
b. mount the phone through the notifications tab
c. navigate to "My Computer" and find the removable disk drive right click and format then i will get the message "there is no disk in the (F drive please insert a disk and try again)
I honestly don't know whats going wrong here
can it be the recent update of android 1.5 to 1.6 the "BIG" transition from cupcake to -_- failnut lol. . . .
So what have done wrong?
Is there a solution to this mess?
and yes I did use the search button. . . .
Google 'Flash Format' (by cnetx). Download the demo, install on your pda, and format that way. Trust me, it'll work. If you like it, buy it.

Well that didn't work. Downloaded what was necessary, connected my phone to the pc. Now it's just stating that the phone has to be connected with the pc even though it is. . .
how about formatting it using a card reader? not from your plugged phone.

Well im trying to find possible ways to do it w/o having to spend money lol.
On the other hand i do have a laptop, it has a card reader but the thing is. . . is that it crashed over a year ago and won't accept the original OS system so i have to use a cracked version. Leading to a problem where i can't use the built in card reader. Which doesn't sound so fun.
If there is any other alternate ways of avoiding a card read and being able to do it with my phone would be awesome, but i can try and find a card reader in the mean time.
Thank you guys for helping. If you have more possible ways please feel free to post more.
try this freeware...
nueStorageManager:
http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/page/nueStorageManager.aspx
nueStorageManager is a control panel applet that lets you control and fine tune storage on your device. It enables you to format, defragment and scan storage on your device, as well as mount and unmount devices.
Warning: Formatting partitions will cause you to lose all device on that partition. Windows CE will prevent you from modifying operating system partitions (IMGFS, XIP) from this tool, but you can still manipulate the FAT32 storage partition with the tool.
lol nothing again.
It's ok i guess lol.
i didn't see that you edited i shall try this one out. thanx for the help again.
lol i just give up. . . until i get a reader.

You need to establish an active sync connection, but if you can't get it working try this: go to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\CNetX\Flash Format folder on your pc. Copy the 'F4.PPCARM.CAB' cab to your ppc and install it the normal way.
