[Q] Can't move apps with Link2SD - Samsung Galaxy S II Plus

I have tried to move apps to sdcard with Link2SD and other similar apps. It fails and says that I can't move them because my device has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage.

Here is a screenshot of the message

Howdy!
as far as I have found out (and been following this problem on and off since I got my plus a few months ago) there is no proper way to move apps to your SD card. Best solution (and the one I am using) is to partition your SD Card then use Link2SD to link apps on your SD. You can set it up to do so automatically for every new app you install. As for partitioning I found this guide the best since I'd never attempted it before but it works really well.

Good luck and hope this helps a little!

Thanks a lot

Do we need to root phone for that?
If yes then what's the point of making partitions.

Well, my phone was rooted anyway but I think Link2SD needs it. As to why exactly it needs to be partitioned I can only tell you that when my card wasn't partitioned as suggested in the guide I linked then Link2SD wouldn't even offer to link the apps. I am no expert as I pointed out but this was a solution that worked for me. It may well be someone else found something better that doesn't require partitioning. To my knowledge doing things this way requires root AND the partitioned SD card.

Did you try Apps to SD? Ill be rooting very soon and see what happens. If none works then last stop would be to make partition.
Okay I did root my phone successfully. Still cant move apps. Now going to do this partition system. Hope it works !

Yeah, I tried Apps to SD as well but without success. You get exactly the message as the OP said here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42863865&postcount=2
Same goes for Link2SD however once you partitioned it at least offers you to link the apps. But like I said that only happened after I did the partitioning. Beforehand it would not even offer that.
I am not entirely sure what or why Samsung did what they did in kinda blocking the moving of apps to an external card but it it really blows considering that you only get a somewhat limited amount of storage to begin with.

Hello again brother. Same here. Before partitioning there was not any option to create link even.
I did the partitioning stuff did work. I can successfully transfer my apps into the ext2 partition i created. (Btw which partition format did you go with?)
How ever I believe folder mount is still a better option as it does not require you to create partitions and works directly such as you enter a brand new card without partition and move apps into card and then it links it. But the only drawback is you need to purchase the app :

Well ext4 didn't work for me idky though ext2 did and it worked. But creating partitions is pure junk and it would reduce the life and speed of your card (its something i believe) so I deleted the partitions and brought my card into original format.
And yes man Folder Mount is something we need ! It does exactly what both of us want. Simply move all the app data from internal memory to external memory and as soon as you move you have empty space on your internal storage and external storage is occupied. Its simple and very clear and easy to use. Just 3 clicks i believe and its done. And another good stuff is it will show you how much an app is occupying internal space and then moves it into SD card and also doesn't show important system apps to move as moving them creates problem.
There's a free version to try which would allow you to move 3 apps only and if you want more then buy the app for 2 Dollars.
Its developed by @madmack. Do check it out. The sad part for me is I dont have a credit card nor Paypal is available in my country
And i need this app badly !

[HOW TO] format sd card with paragon partiton manager

So I decided to make this small guide, on how to partitioning your sd card with paragon partition manager… There is many different ways, including a script an xda forum member created, and ubuntu as well.. But I assume paragon partition manager might be the best for all people who don’t know how to use Linux very much..
i wrote it on my blog, if is considered spam than illtry to put the images content directly in the post
http://nitropr.us/web/2009/05/08/format-sd-card-with-paragon-partition-manager/
hope it helps some one.. i know i know there is MANY ways for this.. but well sicne paragon question keep popping up and did not see a small how to with images for new users so hope it helps least 1 person
Thanks! That will be useful for many... this should be sticky along with the sapphire/magic port (after someone starts a new thread for the newer builds. 600 pages!) Or at least a wrap stick (a thread that contains many highly used threads like in the developement and hacking section under the main thread) would be useful.
i think this is the easiest way. I did this to my card and took only a few min. def the way to go.
its a good guide, but i have a question everytime i try to format this way in paragon it says cannot create partition because all primary slots are taken, it says this when i try to resize or create new. any ideas?
Ok I resized my card using paragon my fat32 is 5gb and my EXT2 is 1.5gb. I went and tried to follow these instructions http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Haykuro_Apps_to_SD and for some reason I am not seeing the system/xbin/busybox folder.

A few things here:
1. Unless you're planning on downloading every app ever made, you're never going to need a ext2 partition larger than 500mb, and even that is a LOT. I tried to fill my partition and managed to squeeze over 300 apps on there before I ran out of room...then I had to painfully uninstall them all cause I didnt feel like reformatting/reflashing/restoring.
2. Make sure you're using the right version of apps-to-sd. Haykuro's latest builds can be found here. The apps-to-sd versions are linked at the very top of the page.
3. The directories you're looking for are NOT on the sd card. They are only visible on the phone through adb. If you're not familiar with adb, do a quick forum search on how to set it up.

[Q] - Move to SD enabled for (almost) all apps by?

Noticed today I'm able to move almost all of my apps to SD and not just the supported ones without having done anything but installing a rooted stock ROM and some standard goodies (SU, BusyBox, ROM Manager and Titanium Backup). Wondering if it was enabled by any of the above? the rooted ROM? or the stock ROM?
any takers?
Titanium backup, in "batch", has option to move all apps to either sd or internal memory.

It's not true A2SD. Just a bunch of buggy symlinks in /data and incomprehensible files in /sdcard/.android-secure that Google is trying to pass off as A2SD.

I know. Just because a bunch of people find hitting "partition SD card" in ClockworkMod Recovery too difficult doesn't mean those of us who want the full potential of our phones unlocked should suffer, but we're stuck until someone finds us the mountpoint for sd-ext.

you all need to check out link2sd (free app) it will let you install apps to ext partition. I myself use it and have a 8gb ext3 partition with over 550+ apps/games installed. It also lets you decide if you want to move dalvikcache and library files to ext to save more internal space. I used mini tool partition app on my pc to create a larger ext partition then cwm would allow.

WIP Memory Address Listing
You need to know where to put and access the data, explicitly, in order to be able to use that location.
Android does this by using mount-points, which translates to the memory address where it should be looking for the information.
The thread I linked to is one I started so that we can discover them all, and what mount points correspond to what memory address.
Please make sure to read post number 8 in the thread by dhkr234 which spells out a good caution about using memory addresses directly and why you should be using mount points instead.
If anyone makes any headway in learning anything we don't know so far, please post it in that thread so we can get a comprehensive listing of mount points and what memory addresses they correspond to.
I've been extremely busy on other projects, but if someone is going to come by and make A2SD available for us, having a road-map for them to follow already sitting here will make their life a lot easier. ( ...and maybe encourage someone to do it because the info is sitting there. )
...and yes, it is specific to our device. Every device addresses the internal memory differently and that makes the mount-points unique to each and every device.
gotcha, so...piecing this all together, does that mean that a true A2SD shouldn't rely on symlink at all and Link2SD (what d12unk13astard recommended) is essentially just another hack?

The real A2SD is not "just another hack," it's one of the ORIGINAL post-root hacks pioneers like JesusFreke came up with. It allows you to put your apps on an EXT partition of your SD card, and you can resize that partition if your computer runs a Linux distribution.

dhkr234 said it good there.
I linked so someone who wants more of an explanation can follow and read up.
In short, you can very easily write to the wrong memory address.
This means:
Installing some silly game over parts of both your boot partition and recovery partition would give you a cool slide-paperweight.
Mount points prevent this from happening by ensuring the data is written to the proper memory addresses.

[Q] link2sd vs built in

Ok in FB's kernel thread I asked is link2sd could be creating reboots when linking a app during a automatic update. FB asked why I was using link2sd.
So after some discussion Im confused. And not wanting to clutter his thread anymore Im creating this one.
My understanding is link2sd uses your current ext partition and puts apps in the sxt partition then symbolic links the app to the original location. That way you gain that much space on your internal.
FB says the built in apps2sd of android does that already. But I was told all it does is move the app from the internal to external (sdcard). This is possible even without a ext partition, I know because several people with the Optimus V do not use link2sd or anything like it. They just use the built in app mover.
When I had my Optimus V I used this data2ext but I do not think it would work for our phone since its written for CM7. WIth that my interal memory showed up as however much my ext partition was minus the apps. What it did is trick the OS into thinking the ext partition was really the internal storage.
My question is am I right in how link2sd works or am I misunderstanding?
Is there a version of the data2ext that works on the SGS4G roms we have and I just cant find it?
Here's some reading for you:

How it works:
Link2SD mounts the second partition of your SD card as /data/sdext2 and makes OS mounts it at boot time.
When you select an application and press "Create Link" button you can select which files of the application will be linked and moved to SD card. Apk, dex and lib files can be moved and you can select all three or any two of three or even only one of them.
Depending on what you select, Link2SD moves apk file, dalvik-cache (.dex) file and lib files (.so) to SD card's second partition and creates symbolic links in original directories.

apps2sd does NOT require repartitioning your sdcard and it's an Android 2.2+ feature.
links2sd requires your sdcard to have at least 2 partitions + formatting your sdcard, and is a 3rd party application.
Ok I understand that. Don't we need a ext partition anyway? IM trying to wrap my head around this but I'm still confused how the built in moves the app to the ext partition.
I'll read more of that thread tomorrow stupid ISP OS doing maintenance and my net is crapping out.

I think what eollie is looking for is what we had on Froyo. Remember dsexton's ext4 guide? We could create a second (ext4) partition on our EXTERNAL Sdcard and use Link2sd to move apps there..
On Froyo I had a second 1.5 GB ext4 partition on my EXTERNAL sdcard and used Link2sd app to move my apps to that partition. It worked Great and I miss having it on Gingerbread. I could not get dsexton's guide to work on Gingerbread at all. It caused me all kinds of problems. Even soft bricks..
Sorry if I'm wrong eollie.
On my old Milestone xt720 I used link2sd primarily before 2.2 was available for the phone. It involved setting up an ext4 partition as well as a linuxswap partition.
At this point ... seeing as we have gingerbread which already moves most apps to sd card ... the only advantage I can really see is that when you use links2sd you can move absolutely any app to sdcard (keyboards, alarm clock, ect) that would not normally be moved.
Now one thing to be cautious about when using links2sd is some apps will not work properly when on the sd card. This is especially true with apps that have widgets. For example - if you move your digital clock to sd card the clock widget will not display.
I don't know if this will be helpful but I just thought I would offer my input.

You are correct.
The link I posted is what I used on my Optimus V. It tricked the phone into thinking that partition was the internal memory.
Like jiggleynuts (that name kills me) said you have to be careful with what apps you put on the sdcard. I was using that but when I update apps it would move them to the sdcard if they could be. And my apps that have widgets I use were breaking cause of it.
Again if we can use something like the data2ext I linked to then I would scrap link2sd faster than you could blink. I hate having to use a app when there is a alternative like the data2ext stuff.
Am I wrong in thinking the ext support we have is the same as what the op in the thread I linked is talking about?

eollie -
did you ever get the data2ext mod working for the t959v?
i remember you from the optimus v forums last year.
correct me if i'm wrong but we used the data2ext mod with bumblebee and harmonia? i'm considering trying that data2ext v7 mod on this device. i'm actually really surprised that mod isn't being used with this device like it was with the O-V. Both have limited internal memory. maybe i've not learned enough about this device and it isn't capable of utilizing the mod. i'm kinda curious why darktremors app2sd mod isn't used either. its an easy option in the kitchen. either way i'm curious what you've found out or experienced with these mods. i do know link2sd works with this device, so i'm assuming data2ext and darktremor app2sd would too.
I replied to your pm. But Ill answer here too, I never found a conclusive answer. So I just move apps using the built in android app2sd function. If there happens to be a app that needs images loaded at boot like launcher themes or the such I just move it to internal memory.
ok cool. i may try it. i dunno.
thanks for your response.

[Q] Clean Rom 5.0 and internal vs external SD card question

Hello all,
I have a VZW Galaxy S3 and am using Scott's CleanRom 5.0
I noticed yesterday that my internal card is 2gb from being full. My external SD is a 32gb and only has a few pictures and some music on it. So I have been wandering around the phone settings trying to figure out how to move my apps to the sd card and free up some space. Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.

The only app that works is link2sd, on the market. But one draw back is you need to reconfig your external sdcard to do this. Reformat and create 2 partions on your sd card, first partition should be fat32, this where you keep your stuff (music/video/pics) and the second partition is for your apps. link2sd will move your app to the second partition on your sdcard and create a reference so your OS would know where to find it.
Note: If you already have stuff on your sdcard, you can keep them by resize the first partion then create the second partion. This way you still have your data intact.

I think you are better off moving data instead of the apps. You can get your music, images, and videos and free up a lot of space (Samsung camera can default to save on external card, 4.2 Canberra doesn't have that setting as far as i can tell). Advantage of this is that even if you brick / break / wipe your phone you can still retrieve your images and music. Pop the card in a new phone and everything is still there. More than that, have titanium backup on the external card and easily transfer non-system apps to the new phone.

Let me make sure I understand correctly. The app will guide you through the partitioning process or is this something I have to do independent from the app?
Thanks in advance.

First I guess I need to explain that I still use iTunes in conjunction with Tune Sync for my music so back up isn't an issue for music. My photos are uploaded to SmugMug so they too are backed up. It just seems that my data and apps are hogging the internal SD.
I have TB Pro installed but admittedly don't know much about it yet as I have converted from the Dark Side (IOS). So, how do I get it to do what I need? Perhaps there is a tutorial somewhere on YouTube I could look up.
EDIT: I found the setting in Camera storage but no option to change it. I just says "SD Card" I assume that is internal SD?

You have to do it manually. It's pretty simple, may take around 20min. Just download the "gparted" iso image, then use imgburn to burn this image on your cd, reboot with cd as default boot device instead of your harddisk, once you booted into gpart operating system, there will be a gui you could use to partion your sdcard, first resize your existing partion, then create a new one from the unallocate partion as ext4. Remember both partion have to be PRIMARY and set the ext4 to boot (once you create the ext4, just right click, select flag then select boot).

How to use link2sd.
click on the app you want to move then select "link to sd" button. Don't click on move app to sd, this is for the old GB rom only.

Thank you for all of this. I won't be able to do this until I return where I can burn the image. Looks fairly simple and I will give it a go when I return to work.
You could always plug your phone into your computer and drop and drag the files you want over to your external card.

I had wondered if I could do that without affecting anything. I'll give it a try.
Thanks

You only can move video/music/pictures/backup files etc.. to your ext sdcard, but you cannot move your apps to external card. Your apps will stopped working. Link2sd allowed you to install all your downdoad apps to your SDcard (most of them, some apps required to stay internal, like widgets etc...)

I should have been more clear. What I suggested was just for backing up files in case the internal memory were to get wiped, example being if a new ROM was flashed with Odin, back to stock, etc. Thanks.

I did more research prior to moving them manually and found that what you just posted would have that affect. So, I still haven't done anything. My computer is old and not capable of burning a disc so I need to use a work computer but will have to do it after hours.
On a semi- related matter, since flashing CR 5.0 my settings for "Nearby Devices" is grayed out. I have been using this in conjunction with viewing photos on my TV. Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I re-flashed without success in gaining access.

I believe you need to install Allshare in order for this option to work.
Is there a way to download and install the Allshare app separately? I didn't choose it when doing the CR5.0 install. I looked on the playstore, but don't see it. I was going to re-install the ROM, but would rather just load the app if i could.
Only way I know is to flash ROM again. I don't use it. You don't have to wipe data just cache and dalvik.

Thanks for that information. I wonder if Allshare is available somewhere? Google is my friend...
This appears to be the Allshare app. It does everything the stock app did. I'll try it and report back.

EDIT: Nope, when opened it states: Allshare Framework not installed application will exit
Well, it was worth asking the question. I will be reflashing the ROM tonight. I just noticed a issue with what I believe would be the KindaCrap mods I installed. I removed the clock from the notification bar, and changed the battery to just a percentage, and the percentage was really slow while charging like it wasn't taking a charge. After rebooting I was near 60%, when it was showing me 20% before the reboot. I think a fresh install will be good.

How to make TWRP and Link2SD working "together"?

Hi everyone,
I posted a thread about a TWRP issue where I was complaining that it didn't work anymore (doesn't want to make backups) after partitioning my SD Card. Now I fixed that, but this incident raised an annoying question: is there any way to use TWRP and still using Link2SD without conflict or you must choice?
Explain for those who didn't already understand :
Basically, Link2SD needs a second partition to move application (data, code, apk and even dex), in order to free up internal storage and more efficiently than only "moving" app on SD Card.
Problem: TWRP on his part can't write on SD card if there is more than one partition. And this for a dark reason (story of single block, blah-blah-bruh)
I already searched around XDA to fix that but I didn't found anything (as usual...)
Well, could you help me?
Thank you in advance
