Could someone please explain to me why anyone produces .rar files as a means of distributing stuff?
I just don't get it. You have to pay to use RAR (there are NO freeware RAR compressors) and the only free RAR readers are completely out-of-date.
Do people who use RAR files get paid some sort of royalty for distributing stuff in this way?
I'd love to grab this package and use some of the stuff in it, but since it is distributed as a RAR and I can't be bothered to *yet again* trawl through a million websites and fend off all the attempts to install Trojans on my system just to get a compatible unrar, I'll give it a miss.
http://www.win-rar.com
There you can download a free trial-version, but you can also use it after the 30 days trial.
Tried it. Trial is 40 days, after which it stops working.
Quote from installation...
This is a trial version. Anyone may use it during a test period of 40 days. Following this test period or less, if you wish to continue to use WinRAR, you must purchase a license.
Try 7-zip (www.7-zip.org) for unpacking RAR files.
I'm using the Win-rar version from rarlabs.com for about 2 years now. Everytime it shows a message of being a trial version, but it just keeps on working.

To be polite, i'll say this is one of the funniest things i've read in all ten years i've been using the internets.
TugZip, 7-zip, IZArc....
There are free alternatives for pretty much ANY comercial software out there. And, as a rule of thumb, freeware apps are way better than commercial ones.

(Un)fortunately, I have to make sure that I don't install any illegal software on my phone, PC or Laptop, so time-limited stuff is out of the window once the trial period is over (even if it still 'works'), and anything 'cracked' is out of the question. Undoubtedly you are correct in that there are always free alternatives for virtually anything, provided you are willing to invest the time to a) find it, b) install it and c) fend off any Trojans or Virii dumped on you while you were looking for it or installing it.
The original point I was trying to make is 'Why do people insist on using RAR to compress stuff, when ZIP is on everyones OS anyway '?
OK, RAR has an advantage of a few bytes in compression size, but it's not enough in this day and age (fast internet speeds for most people, huge disk drives etc.) to warrant all the hassle.
I know this is off-topic, so if a moderator would like to move it to another thread, I don't mind, but for the record, I from now on will not be downloading or installing anything involving RAR files, and I don't care how amusing someone thinks this is.
A simple question.
Why do so many posters in XDA-Developers use RAR format (for which you have to buy/beg/borrow/install/hack/crack something to read), rather than ZIP (which you don't, at least if you're using Windows which I assume most people using a Windows Mobile device are, at least on their mobiles!).
It can't be due to compression size as there are only a few bytes in it between the two.
I started this question off accidentally in the Blackstone forum in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=493364

Well try warez and get burned..
There have been offered enough working rar alternatives.
Again 7zip is a good alternative that can decompress many sorts of archives, and it is free too.
Also rar is fully functional even after the trial period, no need for any discussions regarding cracks, serials etc..
And if you are annoyed by the nag: Buy the damn program, you use it, you pay for it.

Many free programs are under an open source license which means you can clearly see how it works, and cut out the unwanted things.
Let's say you are fed up seeing that nag screen when you run WinRAR on the 40th day. Okay. So you search "free archiver" in Google. You click the first link, the 7-Zip. It is a program which:
a) is open-source
b) unpacks rar (and many other formats but we are talking about rar, right?)
c) has a normal Windows installer.

Dude, seriously, WTF?????
I gave you a list of freeware RAR decompressors, as in "COMPLETELY FREE" decompressors and yet you keep on babbling on about having to pay for it. See, you didn't have to invest any time in finding it, nor did you have to fight off any viruses or spyware to get it. Are you even reading what people are posting here?

Alright, I get it.
My apologies to everyone who has responded to this thread.
I guess I was just having a bad day and this just put the tin-lid on it for me, and I really didn't know that this was a MicroSoft-Bashing forum (what with it being for Windows Mobile devices).
I shall remember in the future, and avoid all mention of anything suggesting the use of anything <retch> MS based.
There - does that cover it?
BTW thanks for the list Rizzo, I will check out the archivers you suggest.

If you are a rom Dev, and you post a rom on this forum, I will be checking the roms for warez.
As a dev, I know how hard it is to put out good quality work, and if your a rom dev you should know as well.

out of curiosity if someone got permission from the dev to redistribute the app would u allow the rom to remain? and what kind of proof would u need to be given?
one more question! is it considered warez if the app on the market is a paid app but the developer has it online on another site for free is it classified as warez if it is used in a rom?

I think in this situation, proof would be a copy of an email or something similar.
And I think if an app is available for free from the dev themselves, and also paid on the market, it should be ok but permission prefered. For example the A2SD app when a2sd was new. The app was posted on this forum as free download, and in market at £1, I know devs made their own a2sd scripts, but I think if the app was to be included in a rom, permission would be appreciated
But that's just me, not too sure really

If its a paid app in the market, or anywhere for that matter, then it is warez.
You MAY use a devs app in your rom as long as you have permission. However that permission must be verified and it WILL be looked into by me or another mod in order to make sure it is authentic.
In a case like this it would be best for the dev to contact a mod at the forum to let us know this is ok.

what about things like setcpu? like I bought it on the market and all, but the dev has a thread on xda here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
yea.
Edit: i saw that you made kingklick remove setcpu from his rom?????
Yes, because he didnt have permission from the owner and the owner actually confronted him about it...
No offense but.....
lmfao..this thread is so hypocritical. I love it! You redefine the word warez to fit your own personal standards, then force said standards on the rest of the users. You would have been a great asset to the Christians during the crusades.
So let's get this right. The things you listed are warez, but TGE, SenseUI, BlurUI, Windows Mobile roms, etc isn't? Please enlighten us on exactly how you reached this conclusion. The way you are handling this makes it seem as if you are being an advocate for only independent devs, and saying f*** the corporations and their devs. Steal from them all you want.
I understand that banning all warez would be restrictive enough to make devs go elsewhere to post, but what good does banning some do? Protect xda from the small time devs who can't afford legal teams anyway? If you really wanted to cover xda's a** you would be banning redistribution of the big boys' software.
Please don't take offense to this. This is meant to have a humorous tone (in other words I'm just BSing around). I don't mean it as a personal attack or anything like that. I have much respect for the people here who help make android better, and understand what you guys are getting at. I just found the obviously flawed nature of your actions way to funny to not point out.
Sounds fair enough =]
It would be awesome if ROM devs create their own apps and have it exclusively on Their roms. It will definantly spruce up the experience

The whole point here is to keep xda out of trouble. For the most part, Microsoft, HTC, Motorola, etc. don't care that we're tinkering with their stuff. When they do mind, xda has to stop it (like what happened with Cyanogen's C&D). You can't ban all redistribution of "intellectual property" (I hate that phrase, it's stupid to think that knowledge could be someone's property, but that is the current view of the law), or people would leave xda, but you have to ban outright swapping of paid apps, or xda gets in big trouble.
That said... I question the free here/paid on the market apps. There are some apps on the market that are paid, but are open source (in some cases GPL) and can be freely downloaded from the dev's website. In this case, certainly permission would be best, but in the case of the dev not responding, certainly this would be okay? I mean, in this case (open source), it's completely legal to redistribute. Therefore, including it in your rom should absolutely be allowable, yes?
That said, I thought I had read somewhere that betterterminal was free software? Or am I wrong....? I will go look into it.
So that means that all devs must NOT include any of the Google apps, right?
I mean every dev must come up with a way just like Cyanogen did, right?
Afterall, the C&D letter to Cyanogen set a precedence. Everyone is well aware of Google's position.
That makes it far more serious for everyone to comply.

The free Version is fine in ROMS, obviously not the paid version
Ok, This is cut and dry. Yall need to quit trying to make this bigger then what it is.
In XDA's eye,
All paid for apps are warez.
Quickoffice is warez.
If the app in question is open source, then its open source and can be used, link that states it is open source would be great to display.
Quit trying to blow this bigger then what it is. We could stand here all day and argue over the "technacalities" of whats legal and whats not. So lets just not waste our time writing long posts to argue something that isnt even worth arguing here, IMO.
Once again, untill further notice, on XDA, in specific regards to content in relation to android, the term warez will reference Paid apps, and quickoffice.
In the future we may add to this, but not at this time.

I am the developer of Better Terminal Emulator. Better Terminal Emulator 1.3 was for Android 1.0. It's best to use Better Terminal Emulator Magic v1.5 for Cupcake and later. I recently updated Better Terminal Emulator Pro for the new Android devices coming out, and will be upgrading the free version of Better Terminal Emulator Magic to include all the soft keyboard bugfixes that went into Pro. Essentially "Magic" will have all features of "Pro" except the Enhanced Shell and Virtual DPAD.
Any ROM developers who wish to include Better Terminal Emulator Magic are free to do so.
Also, I made a Wiki to cover Better Terminal Emulator:
http://www.magicandroidapps.com/wiki
My goal is to make Better Terminal Emulator Magic the best FREE Terminal Emulator for Android, and to add some great features to Pro for people who want to be on the cutting edge with the latest improvements. I am also planning to support x86-based Android devices, and have posted Better Terminal Emulator Magic to many app sites, since I know many development devices don't have access to the official Market.
Thanks for your interest in, and support of Better Terminal Emulator.

Kudos for protecting the app devs, but...
When did XDA become a soap opera?
For f*%#s sake, people, if a dev says so, then it is so!
If you don't like it, find another forum!
Hell, I don't totally agree with the definition of "warez" they seem to be using, but this isn't MY FORUM, so I don't have ANY REASON TO COMPLAIN WHEN THEY MAKE RULES!
Dammit, just be happy they're leaving stuff alone that they're leaving alone! If you can't live without quickoffice, or stealing paid apps, then FIGURE OUT A WAY TO FIND THEM YOURSELF!
Some of you want to argue about the most ridiculous crap! At least you can still download the friggin roms!
STFU already!
Guys,
For several years I have been using IneSoft's Cash Organizer and until the purchase of my HD2, Cash Organizer has served me very well.
However, with the HD2 the marriage is now in tatters.....
The problem is with viewing transactions.
Basically, if you wish to view a particular transaction stored what you used to do was swipe your finger to scroll through the list or use a stylus on the scroll bar to the right.
Even with a large database of transactions you could easily locate a particular transaction by moving the page slowly either up or down.
However, with the HD2's capacitive screen you can't 'finger swipe' the screen.
The only way to manoeuvre through a long list is to use the thick scroll bar to the right.
It is here however lays the problem.....
With a large database of transactions the slightest of movement either up/down causes the list to jump not a few transactions at a time but several pages.
As such it is neigh on impossible to scroll to a particular transaction.
So....... I'm here tonight to ask what 'Finance Software' do you guys use or recommend?
Bearing in mind it obviously has to be 'finger-friendly'.
Thanks in advance.

Ohh Yes.... and THAT is only the start of it.
Basically, I started a topic on the IneSoft forum on the 18 Nov asking for support.
This fell to total silence and then I noticed another member posted asking for the same.
As nothing further developed I 'bumped' the topic by asking again.....
Once again nothing...
Then the other poster made another request and yet again nothing.
Then all of a sudden both the posters requests and my requests disappeared.
So, we both re-posted material requests and these again were both deleted.
It was now at this point the other poster requested the Moderator stop deleting our posts and concentrate on giving a reply.
I myself posted the same... After all, there had been no flaming or offensive derogatory remarks.... Just pure frustration.
I also made a point of mentioning in the post on this occasion I had taken a 'snapshot' of the topic and had the entire topic saved.
Guess what......
..
..
..
Yes, they deleted both mine and the other posters posts AGAIN.
So..... if it were not for the fact Cash Organizer means so much to me I doubt I would continue to support IneSoft.
However, I have now written to powers outside of the Forum asking for an investigation.
I await a response.
I have no answer for you but I shall watch this thread carefully as I'm a long-term SPB Finance user.
Unfortunately, this app seems "dormant" / "dead" in terms of ongoing development - last release was January 2008. But, why change something that works well - on a HD "classic" SPB Finance is super - on the HD2, however, it's a nightmare!
With care the app is useable but hardly one to recommend for the HD2.
Guess I'll just have to wait for a new finance app in the Market Place (ho ho ho !)
Guys,
fards sent me a P.M. earlier on with a suggestion to try and use the small application VolDpad.
I am totally ecstatic to report the use of this small app has given the control I had lost.
Granted, it does not give 'finger-scrolling' or 'swiping' but what it has done is allowed me to run the application whenever I load Cash Organizer and use the Vol Up/Down as a scroll Up/Down.
I can once again scroll through transactions singular and not several pages at a time using the thick scroll bar on the right of Cash Organizer's screen.
fards,
If you are reading this....
My sincere thanks to you.
I owe you one.
I have also Donated to VolDpad's author.
This has gone through PayPal and has been accepted.
Please see here.
Thanks again..... truly appreciated.

Here's what was mentioned:-
was going through Reg and found this, don't know if it relevant but saw you guys mentioned biotouch...
HKLM\Software\HTC\Biotouch\Disable4SpecificApp\Res coExplorer
and there we find Resco, dont know if this helps you anything though, maybe you can play around and create new settings for your financial app - or I've just misunderstood everything

I had a look in the registry but couldn't make out what I had to do to either change or add an extra line.
If anyone can think of an idea I am open to try it.
Thanks.
Can you make a screenshot of that page?
With Resco registry normaly you have to create a value with the app name.exe (without exe). That means you have to add extra lines of the programs.
There are 4 values to choose. You can try everyone of them and see if the \RescoExplorer has the same icon, with the one you made. Most of time is a string value. Try it!
Resco explorer use its owen biotouch system to scroll. If Resco explorer scrolling working, maybe this one will work too.
If the cappacitive problem can be solved with this little trick, it would be awesome!
The only thing that stopps me now to buy a HD2, is the cappacitive screen. And use cash organiser since many years too.

Although I have found the location where the Biotouch section lays I would not know where to start in adding items to the registry.
Obviously I need to add a line but what and where?
If there were a value you could change from 0 to 1 that would not be a problem but what I read makes no sense.
Did you try this ?

Thanks but no....
I have many years of transactions built with Cash Organizer plus 'when' it works it works in a very professional and clear manner.
The one you kindly mention looks a bit too basic plus I wouldn't be able to import all those years of data.
Thanks again, I truly appreciate your post but it's not for me.
Hope you understand.
Why don`t you make a screeshot of that reg page? Where the Rescoexplorer is.
I don't have a HD2, but i want to understand why is so difficould for you to add an application in there

Many thanks again for coming back on this... appreciated.
Re The screenshot ~ I would need to obtain an app that would allow me to do so but would be happy once I have located such application.
Re The difficulty in not adding to the registry ~ I am a surgeon by profession.
I do not confess to having a greater understanding, whereby to add detail in the registry other than changing Enable 0's to 1's is my present limit.
It may be a simple step but I unfortunately have never found the time to learn the intricacies of registry hacking.
What I can do is copy all that is in the Biotouch folder... Would that help?
What icon does it have in the folder "Disable4SpecificApp" at the front of resco explorer?
If it is "ab", then press menu/new/string value
If it is "m", then press menu/new/multi Line string value
if it is "011110" then press menu/new/binary value
if it is "D" then press menu/new/DWORD Value
Try to modify the exist entry with rescoexplorer and tell us what does it say

It is "ab".
I pressed the New String and that brings up "Name" & String".
What do I add here?
Sorry but do not understand your comment ~ "Try to modify the exist entry with rescoexplorer and tell us what does it say".
Press and hold the rescoexplorer entry and it apears a window. The first option i s modify. What does it say by name and string?

If you are talking of the ab (Default) icon it simply says:-
(value not set)
Press & Hold then brings up:-
String Value
Name: (Default)
String: Blank
Whereas inside the Resco Explorer Folder there are two icons:-
ab (Default) value not set
ab ClassName TouchListCtrl
I can not undertand what you are saying.
Please extract the reg enty rescoexplorer and upload here
What's up guys? I would like to introduce my first EVO ROM. I'm going with a basic name for now, since I really don't know what I want to call it. Any suggestions are welcomed. I will post information on this rom here but all future ROM's and info will be posted on my blog Choc's Blog.
I want to start off by saying thanks to the following board members:
Flipzmode: For providing us with the stock evo ruu zip file
MagnusRagnarok: Helping me understand android better and working with me on Hero/Evo Roms.
regaw_leinad: Helping me with the quickboot fix
JsChiSurf: Providing me with assistance on hero roms and info so we can hopefully deodex EVO files. (Magnus - we will get this working!) LOL
If, I forgot anyone please let me know. Now onto the fun stuff.
ROM INFO
Base: Supersonic_1.32.651.1
Update.zip: stock-evo-update-zip
Root: You have to be rooted to flash this ROM. I rooted via the Toast option...not sure how the Unrevoked root works or if you can flash roms. Anyone one who tries it let me know if it's successful
NOTE: Make sure you wipe before flashing.

I can see why you removed some of the bloatware but why in the world would you remove the above?
I know it's a matter of opinion but personally live wallpapers isn't an HTC or Sprint thing it's an ANDROID thing and a lot of us enjoy it.
Voice search & dialing, pdf viewer, ringtone trimmer, & sound recorder these are all things alot of people will use at one point or another, these are not exactly bloatware since many users will go to the market and download a similar app at some point.
I dunno maybe it's just me but it seems like all the hatred towards HTC Sense elements is getting a little bit crazy. These apps aren't even exactly considered bloatware unlike amazon or the other Sprint garbage that startup in the background everytime you boot the phone.
Either way thanks for the release.

Try to stay on topic. Please dont insult my intelligence with such snarky comments. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING I HAVE EVER SAID WAS INSIGHTFUL, nor is it implied by myself. If it bothered your eyes so badly then why would you quote? Wheatever YOU gather is your own perspective. Try to remain objective. This site is viewed by many different types of ppl, with many different perspectives. As ive told more than 1000 others, it has NOTHING to do with my mood or some insightful point i am trying to make. It is a display of our freedom of expression. IT is more asthetically pleasing to MY eyes. I am an art major. If we were not allowed to use them then i dont think the forum would provide them. I am from AMERICA. Are you really crying about fonts, sizes and formats of my posts?in a forum? on the internet?.....Any of my questions were purely rhetorical, PLEASE do not post answers, as this is the last response you will receive from me.......NOW BACK TO TOPIC....CHOCOMATIC, i think i have it Ill send you some test apks in the chan or on gtalk. I think, in your rant, you missed the quoted poster's point. Whether you realize it or not, that style of posting denotes to others that you believe your post is somehow more exceptional or important than everyone else's in the thread, and deserves some special recognition. Since basically no one else in the forum does it, it also shows a lack of respect for others, since you're putting greater emphasis on your posts.
Before you point this out yourself - I'm not saying this is your intention, nor accusing you of doing anything intentional or malicious. I'm simply pointing out the message it sends to others, and why it prompted timothydonohue's response...and possibly the 1000's of others you mentioned.

I have to kind of agree. It's kind of like posting in ALL CAPS. People can use big text when they're uploading instructions or a FAQ, it makes common sense. But to use it with no meaning? That's almost closer to "PoSTiNg LiKe ThiS." I just assumed he was legally blind or something, no offense.
ok, back on topic..
OP thanks for the ROM.. its not my cup of tea since some of the apps you removed I use.. but I still appreciate the effort.
Simple solution, can we get the removes uploaded as a zip?
Let's not piss off the devs, if he chooses to post flamboyantly, why does that really bother you.
Effing people.....WOW. Good work OP on putting out some of your work and sharing it with the world.
The other two with their internet girl fight need to take that business some where else. That makes you and the community look bad when outsiders consider a place like XDA. Makes us all look like a bunch of whining 4 year old women that would rather fight then share knowledge.
fight it out through PM or shut up.
BACK on to topic. Thanks alot again. I will try this out when i get home.
i have to say reading what was removed and added put a smile on my face.. thanks for the rom, looking forward to your work!!!

Magnus chooses to use his font and display his artistic style is for his own amusement or enjoyment not for yours. If you feel that it encroaches on your right to view text in a totally vanilla format then don't view it and skip to the next post. It's not complicated.
Also don't be RUDE yourself and jack the OP's ROM thread. This is not the what you feel when Magnus uses his "crazy fonts" thread.
Thank you OP for the ROM!
dont know what the deal is but i have been trying to get this rom however 4share is keeping me in a loop.. i have waiting 90 seconds who knows how many times because the download link that appears after the wait just takes me back.. basically going into a continuous loop.. really hoping theres actually a problem and not user error cause that would be sorta embarassing since ive been doing this for a while.. can someone give me a heads up and tell me what im doing wrong, six ppl have gotten the file so far but im not sure how.. was using linux and that wasnt working so i tried with windows and im getting the same results!!!
i even registered and still nothing... wtf
not even in internet explorer is it working!!

Download Log This from Android Market
^^^This info does not update on it's own^^^
I have created a very simple but useful application called Log This. In short, it lets end-users get logcat logs (perhaps the app didn't crash - but it isn't working right.) without all the ADB fuss that surrounds logcat. It is meant to be simple for end users and powerful for developers.
It includes pastebin support that makes it easy to paste to your favorite android development forum, not mentioning any names that start with X.
Android Market Description said:
Log This is an application that can read logs given a provided tag and log level - and send them to developers. This saves them the hassle of having to use logcat on their computer with ADB.
As a developer, requesting the READ_LOGS permission is risky - it scares away a lot of users. Log This uses this permission, but is meant to be used by developers to request their end users to send in debug logs - one app to log em' all.
As an end user, you can install the app and help out your developers when they need debugging on specific phone models - provided they have logging enabled (perhaps via a logging mode).
It also can fetch kernel (panic) logs, as long as you supply the location of the log (a kernel developer can tell you if it does or not - not all kernels do)
This application is NOT optimized for tablets, but it should work on them. I don't have one to test with.
Permissions Explained:
READ_LOGS: Application has to be able to read the logs - the only data read is displayed in the email
INTERNET/CHECK_NETWORK_STATE: Advertising
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Used for building the log file. I leave the latest log as log.txt on the root of your media area (internal SD) so that you can always check it yourself.

I know there is an app called Log Collector already but I want to create some additional features.
Some new features that will be coming soon:
Three Click Logs - click on a file, accept the preview, click send. (file association)
I hope someday this app will be really useful.
Thoughts?
More otpions is always good. Thanks.
Balancing school, work, research (GibberTalk) and this app will be one great task
My friend and I were just discussing making an app like this. You beat us to the punch and you did a great job at doing that. Will it be okay to include your app in custom ROMs?
Of course! Just make sure it is linked to android market (so it will update itself). And as long as the rom isn't sold for money (I hear some roms are?). Happy cooking!
Awesome thanks a bunch!

Yes, but did you hit the "THANKS" button?
Hi,
I'm quite new to Android.
It definitely will be helpful to me when I want to help a developer.
I have a question.
Does this app run itself in the background or do I have to enable it?
You must run this app yourself. A logging service would seem kind of creepy Logcat is ~10000 long (thats as far as my eclipse one goes anyway) so you should have a good 10 minutes, unless your device just booted, then DLNA parser (at least on my atrix, perhaps its just the media scanner) will flood your logcat for like 10 minutes.
The way this app is intended to work (end users wise, not as devs)
Devs either have logging/debug mode or have logging on by default
end-user experiences odd behavior/crash (crashes on 2.2 can be sent through 'reporting' to the market)
End user asks dev why this doesn't work
Dev either A) gives user file that auto collects needed info (they just have to send), and they open it after they start the app/it doesn't work properly or B) dev gives them the needed info (not much) to fill out the forms and send it in.
PROFIT!

Forgive me for not fully understanding the logging process. I'm on Serendipity VII. Will your program 'turn on' logging, or is there something I still have to do to enable it?
Android has a user-hidden system called LogCat that is always running. You can oly see it with the logcat command built into the system (also accessible through ADB, its very VERY useful for developers for debugging/seeing what is going on). This just runs the 'logcat command' (prints out text) and filters it out. This app just captures that log command (with the filters)

Hello,
I'm planning to communicate a procedure to use this app to the users of my own app who encounter problems.
There are however some questions / remarks I already have :
"Log an application tag" field : is this the TAG constant we pass to the android.util.Log.* calls ? In this case, I personally use several different tags in the same app so this would not be enough for all cases.
internationalization : the app is in english only, is it possible to help translating ? I can do it for french...
in the screenshots at the market, there is a screen that I don't have on my device : ss-480-1-1 (the one with the nice looking arrows "keep it private" / "make it public"), is it an old screen ?
From my first tests, it looks like there is not a lot of logs extracted, but I didn't tested it extensively. I'll will test it more and give you more feedback, thanks for this possibly great alternative to Log Collector !
I am soon going to add multiple tags, but they will all have to use the same level. I've been incredibly busy with my schoolwork that just started (and it sucks too!)
The app right now is english only. I can work on making it more translatable, but I throw a mix of R.string.xx with string literals.
The 'keep it private' screen isn't there cause it was a GIMPED photo. To promote your app you should add text. That would never fit on a small screen. Still trying to make screen scaling better than just scroll panes. It'll get there though.
How long before your app is released?
Edit: Or how long would you need? I have some ideas that could be wrapped around this:
Should all the tags be inline?
Should they be spread across .txt files? (Although that would be a bit more difficult as iirc the gmail app only supports up to 5)
I'd list more but my class is about to start

I've just released one already, soon in the app forum of xda, if I manage to get some time to do it right...
As I said, I'm not in need of any blocking feature... I think using "Log this" doesn't need to be programmatically integrated in the application, and that's a good point for me. We just need to tell users to install it and what parameters to use, on a per case basis.

I haven't thought about it yet, but a txt file looks too much complicated for users... Maybe it's best to uncheck the corresponding checkbox if there are multiple tags, or to use some generic patterns like "my.package.*"...
Also I was wondering if a simple URI like logthis://tag=TAG1&tag=TAG2&level=debug&... could be easily parsed as an Intent by some BroadcastReceiver...? This would help the developer give the user the right parameters via e-mail or other...
Again, this would require more thinking before considering those as good ideas and implement them... Maybe this will give you a starting point...
Nice tool, thanks a lot
@Mgamerz : Here is my app "SwitchDataSwitch" at xda : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287025
I will soon include a chapter on how to use Log This in case of problem on the website : http://bitbucket.org/nicobo/switchdataswitch
Fyi, the next version might include a direct link to use Log This.
---------- Post added at 12:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:49 PM ----------
By the way, this is a first test, I think I will generalize the use of both Log This and Log Collector in my future apps, thanks.
I call for the root-kit developers of Kingo to come out of the woodworks and come clean. I'm tired of reading about all the various security issues people bring up with using their rootkits.

False positive or not, this should be worrisome to everybody, since it was on the most recent binary posted. If you do the same thing for their older binaries, you will find loads more issues. In addition I have still not seen anyone bother to do a thorough analysis of their windows execs or house-calls.
---
To Kingo Developers:
Given the highly dubious background to Kingo and the little information you provide to developers regarding your rooting app, I think it's time for you to stand up and come clean. Remember that even linking to your website was banned from XDA until recently. Nobody is asking you to give up the vulnerability you use to gain root or your other rooting secret.
But most of us would really like to know:
Why is your windows executable so damn large? (~24MB!)
(What exactly is in it that require it to be so, when most others level out ~5MB.)
What exact files are installed on the windows machine used?
What exact files are installed on the phone being rooted?
Why don't you just provide a flashable kernel or binary like everyone else does?
Who are you and why should anyone trust you?
(Especially when you seem to be afraid to come forward.)
What exact information is being sent to your servers?
Does rooting require an internet connection? (If so why?)
What is your business model, how do you make a living?
(Someone must be paying your website hosting costs etc.)
Until there is some more transparency in this, I will not recommend anyone to use your rooting method, even if I think it look very good.
A) This forum isn't an appropriate place to call someone out. To call for an audit or ask a question sure, but not to call them out to come clean
B) It contains exploits, of course it is going to trigger AV software, all exploits should. The packer used also likely causes AV detections. Su binary alone is enough to cause it on some devices
B) I've performed a fairly extensive investigation of Kingo. It is suspicious, it has the ability to fetch binaries remotely, and execute them locally. They were collecting serial/imei from devices, but they claim to have stopped this practice after I confronted them.

1- 24mb is relatively small now a days, simple games on mobile devices are much larger.
2- dunno
3- Varies per device and firmware
4- They are targeting the less technical user, this approach makes sense in that case (not that I like this approach)
5- Who are you and why should anyone trust you? or me for that matter?
6- Detailed information about the device, previously included IEMI, promised to stop havent verified
7- Remote fetching of drivers, and exploits.
8- Good question

I recommend against rooting of devices period, especially for those concerned about security. If one feels they must have root, using an exploit from a well known and trusted source is best. No one should be using these exploit packs.

A) This forum isn't an appropriate place to call someone out. To call for an audit or ask a question sure, but not to call them out to come clean

Actually, why not? I guess it's just a matter of semantics and when the same people are making obvious false claims and avoid all the relevant questions, I really do think its time to use different words, but with the same meaning.

I guess that is the whole point. Many people are rooted for that exact reason, they no longer trust their service providers, their manufacturers, all for very good reasons. A cooked ROM by a recognized developer just seem way more safe than anything provided by Samsung, HTC, Verizon etc etc.

Because it isn't the intended purpose of this forum, organizing an audit would serve the purpose far better.

Historically, "cooked" roms are far less secure than the firmware from the ODMs. Even ones that seem to focus on security have a history of using "public" private keys, or superuser control APKs with known vulnerabilities. They also do not get the security bulletins that AMSS members or OHA partners get, which leaves them months behind on critical patches.
@jcase: I think we're pretty much on the same page, but our vague and subjective definition of "secure" is probably what's bothering us. When I talk about security, I'm more concerned with being spied upon by external entities. This would indeed happen with the help and leakage of information due to nontransparent proprietary Apps and binaries. As for your sense of security, it's more about being hacked. Yes, then perhaps unrooted STOCK ROMs are more secure. But since the end user never have access to these security bulletins, which "security researchers" do have, they/we will never know about any vulnerabilities until it's too late. Determined hackers will always have an advantage as long as stock SW remains secret and unified across devices.
As for this thread. Ok, I agree, let's call for an "audit" instead...
Seriously, 3 no name anti-virus programs detect a virus and you think thats valid? Anti virus programs are so inefficient at finding anything, they should not even be used in most cases to argue with anything.
As for rooting, nobody should use a rooting method posted by somebody, at least no tools offered by by somebody online. There are official methods for that.
People who are new to android at best should not root their phones.
Also, what has been said about cooked roms is true. Sadly, its either live with an outdated rom or use a risky custom rom.
That is why you dont use an old smartphone to do business.

Too bad it is absolutely valid, for a number of reasons.
