Suitable Finger-Friendly Finance programs for the HD2 - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

Guys,
For several years I have been using IneSoft's Cash Organizer and until the purchase of my HD2, Cash Organizer has served me very well.
However, with the HD2 the marriage is now in tatters.....
The problem is with viewing transactions.
Basically, if you wish to view a particular transaction stored what you used to do was swipe your finger to scroll through the list or use a stylus on the scroll bar to the right.
Even with a large database of transactions you could easily locate a particular transaction by moving the page slowly either up or down.
However, with the HD2's capacitive screen you can't 'finger swipe' the screen.
The only way to manoeuvre through a long list is to use the thick scroll bar to the right.
It is here however lays the problem.....
With a large database of transactions the slightest of movement either up/down causes the list to jump not a few transactions at a time but several pages.
As such it is neigh on impossible to scroll to a particular transaction.
So....... I'm here tonight to ask what 'Finance Software' do you guys use or recommend?
Bearing in mind it obviously has to be 'finger-friendly'.
Thanks in advance.

Ohh Yes.... and THAT is only the start of it.
Basically, I started a topic on the IneSoft forum on the 18 Nov asking for support.
This fell to total silence and then I noticed another member posted asking for the same.
As nothing further developed I 'bumped' the topic by asking again.....
Once again nothing...
Then the other poster made another request and yet again nothing.
Then all of a sudden both the posters requests and my requests disappeared.
So, we both re-posted material requests and these again were both deleted.
It was now at this point the other poster requested the Moderator stop deleting our posts and concentrate on giving a reply.
I myself posted the same... After all, there had been no flaming or offensive derogatory remarks.... Just pure frustration.
I also made a point of mentioning in the post on this occasion I had taken a 'snapshot' of the topic and had the entire topic saved.
Guess what......
..
..
..
Yes, they deleted both mine and the other posters posts AGAIN.
So..... if it were not for the fact Cash Organizer means so much to me I doubt I would continue to support IneSoft.
However, I have now written to powers outside of the Forum asking for an investigation.
I await a response.

I have no answer for you but I shall watch this thread carefully as I'm a long-term SPB Finance user.
Unfortunately, this app seems "dormant" / "dead" in terms of ongoing development - last release was January 2008. But, why change something that works well - on a HD "classic" SPB Finance is super - on the HD2, however, it's a nightmare!
With care the app is useable but hardly one to recommend for the HD2.
Guess I'll just have to wait for a new finance app in the Market Place (ho ho ho !)

Guys,
fards sent me a P.M. earlier on with a suggestion to try and use the small application VolDpad.
I am totally ecstatic to report the use of this small app has given the control I had lost.
Granted, it does not give 'finger-scrolling' or 'swiping' but what it has done is allowed me to run the application whenever I load Cash Organizer and use the Vol Up/Down as a scroll Up/Down.
I can once again scroll through transactions singular and not several pages at a time using the thick scroll bar on the right of Cash Organizer's screen.
fards,
If you are reading this....
My sincere thanks to you.
I owe you one.
I have also Donated to VolDpad's author.
This has gone through PayPal and has been accepted.
Please see here.
Thanks again..... truly appreciated.

As I mentioned in the quote from me above, I wrote directly to IneSoft asking them to investigate why both wampots and my posts were being deleted from the IneSoft Forum.
This morning I received a reply back from the Director at IneSoft:-
Hello Mike,
I apologize for what happened.
I'll check the causes of the incident.
Please write to me what problem you are concerned about our products. I promptly answer you personally.
Once again I offer you my apologies for such practices.

Member br3nt came up with an interesting option to try.
Here's what was mentioned:-
was going through Reg and found this, don't know if it relevant but saw you guys mentioned biotouch...
HKLM\Software\HTC\Biotouch\Disable4SpecificApp\Res coExplorer
and there we find Resco, dont know if this helps you anything though, maybe you can play around and create new settings for your financial app - or I've just misunderstood everything

I had a look in the registry but couldn't make out what I had to do to either change or add an extra line.
If anyone can think of an idea I am open to try it.
Thanks.

Can you make a screenshot of that page?
With Resco registry normaly you have to create a value with the app name.exe (without exe). That means you have to add extra lines of the programs.
There are 4 values to choose. You can try everyone of them and see if the \RescoExplorer has the same icon, with the one you made. Most of time is a string value. Try it!
Resco explorer use its owen biotouch system to scroll. If Resco explorer scrolling working, maybe this one will work too.
If the cappacitive problem can be solved with this little trick, it would be awesome!
The only thing that stopps me now to buy a HD2, is the cappacitive screen. And use cash organiser since many years too.

Although I have found the location where the Biotouch section lays I would not know where to start in adding items to the registry.
Obviously I need to add a line but what and where?
If there were a value you could change from 0 to 1 that would not be a problem but what I read makes no sense.

Did you try this ?

Thanks but no....
I have many years of transactions built with Cash Organizer plus 'when' it works it works in a very professional and clear manner.
The one you kindly mention looks a bit too basic plus I wouldn't be able to import all those years of data.
Thanks again, I truly appreciate your post but it's not for me.
Hope you understand.

Why don`t you make a screeshot of that reg page? Where the Rescoexplorer is.
I don't have a HD2, but i want to understand why is so difficould for you to add an application in there

Many thanks again for coming back on this... appreciated.
Re The screenshot ~ I would need to obtain an app that would allow me to do so but would be happy once I have located such application.
Re The difficulty in not adding to the registry ~ I am a surgeon by profession.
I do not confess to having a greater understanding, whereby to add detail in the registry other than changing Enable 0's to 1's is my present limit.
It may be a simple step but I unfortunately have never found the time to learn the intricacies of registry hacking.
What I can do is copy all that is in the Biotouch folder... Would that help?

What icon does it have in the folder "Disable4SpecificApp" at the front of resco explorer?
If it is "ab", then press menu/new/string value
If it is "m", then press menu/new/multi Line string value
if it is "011110" then press menu/new/binary value
if it is "D" then press menu/new/DWORD Value
Try to modify the exist entry with rescoexplorer and tell us what does it say

It is "ab".
I pressed the New String and that brings up "Name" & String".
What do I add here?
Sorry but do not understand your comment ~ "Try to modify the exist entry with rescoexplorer and tell us what does it say".

Press and hold the rescoexplorer entry and it apears a window. The first option i s modify. What does it say by name and string?

If you are talking of the ab (Default) icon it simply says:-
(value not set)
Press & Hold then brings up:-
String Value
Name: (Default)
String: Blank
Whereas inside the Resco Explorer Folder there are two icons:-
ab (Default) value not set
ab ClassName TouchListCtrl

I can not undertand what you are saying.
Please extract the reg enty rescoexplorer and upload here

ATT Tilt - SMS time stamp

I'm a newbie to this....
I've read all the posts etc...
Here is what I've done.
I've installed...
HardSPL
Duuty's Tom 6.1 official release
Radio 1.6
Tilt Keyboard Fix cab
I've edited the registry to
TimeZoneField = 0
And reset my tilt, and I'm STILL getting the the SMS timestamp's wrong. When receiving messages it's off by 4 hours..
Plus, I find battery life is not as good, and it's a little sluggish..
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to solve the time stamp issue???
Thank in advance!

2 things you can do.
1) Install the Daylight savings time cab. Do a search for it.
2) You can add in this registry settings.
HKLM>Software>OEM>PhoneSetting
Add this: "TrustTimeZoneField" w/ dword value of "0" - Without the quotations obvioiusly
Soft reset
Well that certainly makes it easy for him. No Offense intended kjb...

go to start>settings>regional settings change to your timezone.
go to start>settings>clock and adjust GTM to where live.
that should more or less solve your problem.

Timestamp fix.
Set your proper timezone.
Install this cab.
Tested on my tilt.
All it does is create
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"TrustTimeZoneField"=dword:00000000
UTC time

Is it possible to put a 4 or -4 in the time zone field?
Perhaps the coder used UTC time for TimeZoneField.
http://www.time.gov/ go here and select your zone for correct number and see if that works
Not sure as to the battery life or sluggishness

gpsaro, what network are you using? The registry hack you used and I posted some time back was confirmed to work on Rogers and AT&T... I think one person on Fido still had the time stamp problem. Don't know if it was resolved for him.

First of all, THANK YOU for this .CAB It works like a charm.
To Jimmy McGee, with all due respect, this Timestamp issue has been a real bear of a problem, and although I personally researched it, and even used the registry tweak successfully, when I did a hard reset, I couldn't get it to work again. I just don't think we should be so quick to flame people who ask questions, as long as they are VALID questions and not stupid "which rom is the best" questions.
Anyhow, just my two cents.

With all do respect, we understand that you want to ask a valid question. And yes, you are right... this was a valid question unlike some that ask "How do you are reset" type of thing... HOWEVER...
when there is a thread already that has the posted answer that was dealt with back at the beginning of March, it becomes redundant.
The answer was posted there.
So why it bothers some people is the fact that its just another thread that already has an answer elsewhere and all you had to do was read and search.

Fair enough, but sometimes, older threads get passed over by people who have read them previously, and possibly think there can't possibly anything new in that thread worth reading. The post to which you refer as an example, some people (myself included) posted that they were still having problems with the fix, and it wasn't until this thread got started that someone bothered to automate the process and make a cab.
All I'm trying to say is that I think that sometimes we're too quick in flaming someone for asking a question, and it makes people who are having legitimate issues reluctant to ask for help for fear of being flamed.

Noobies may not immediately realize this is where they should ask questions, but Mods can help. Or change the rule a bit to someone has to make at least 10 posts or so before they can start add new topics?

I'm looking for a very simple profile manager (Nokia like), I need only to switch from "normal" to "meeting" or another or two custom profiles, then I need the possibility to choose for how many time, then, after this time, automatically switch back to normal.

One Noob reporting for dutey sir
Let me try as well
I have been looking for a Calendar similar to iPhone. I am not an iphone fan. But I like the calendar, I mean their agenda view. I would like to have software which shows agenda view for a year or so. I am using today agenda which is good one but that shows only 30 days max. Dont ask me to try agenda fusion and the other huge applications I have tried them too heavy and complicated. I dont use most of thei funtionalities. What I am looking for is a simple program which can show agenda view for a year or may be more
THanks

In my opinion , I would def recomend Thumbcal. Type it in on google search, it is on here somewhere. Thats by far the most iPhone like calendar I've used, pluse it's pretty, it's functional, and No bugs, that I've noticed.
Also, I would really like to thank the noobys that have actually used this thread. That has saved four unneccisary threads from getting started already, and look how fast your questions got answered. If you would have made a new thread, then you would have just got flamed. I really hope more ppl support this thread, and the mods stick it. More noobs would see it, and therefore use it. Once they see how quick the replys are, then why wouldn't they. But thanks for the support, and I hope you keep it up, and get others involved. This is my cotribution to help clean up. Also , I'm going to start something new.
For every question that gets posted, and then gets answered, I will personally PM the person who asked , to let them know that its answered. I will check the site every night, and morning, and for sure do this. I hope this helps provoke more use. Thanks guys.

Possible new XDA feature set? Configuration Profiles per phone? (Ex: my T-mob Wing)

In my sigfile below, you can see what I am currently running on my T-Mobile Wing.
The XDA site, for a long time, has been incredible in terms of specific app development, ROMs, etc. But I am now looking for "the next step": Total configuration recommendations: specific recs on which apps to use together with which ROMs on a given device, to achieve a user's most important usability functions and requirements.
I am going to layout the current issues I have been having problems with, mention my priority requirements, and I'm seeking recs on a smart configuration suite that begins with the ROM, includes recs on the overall interface and app launcher, down to specific APP recommendations to best meet my needs.
I think it would be great to eventually create, for all phone models, a series of consumer-end-user "Configuration Profiles", so right now, this is a first request: Help me optimize my T-Mobile Wing for how I want to use it.

ROM: OpenTouch 6.5 by ttran001
INTERFACE & APPLICATION LAUNCHER: iFonz 1.1.2 by ssj5trunks
BASIC PHONECALL FUNCTIONS:supbro's iDialer + iContact (via larna)
SOFT KEYBOARD: PCM Keyboard by tene w/ iPhone theme by 2manyphones /
PRIMARY BROWSER: Opera Mini (strengths: Speed, lightweight. Weakness: data input is 2-step process; no copy & paste of web content)
SECONDARY BROWSERS: Opera Mobile (but for some reason the SIP is always overriding my preference, and going back to Windows soft keyboard). Skyfire (great for Youtube; lacks setting your own startpage URL), NetFront (I think their zoom/context scroller is fantastic)
MUSIC PLAYER: A_C's s2p
VIDEO PLAYER: for YouTube videos I use Skyfire Browser; otherwise YouTubePlay by milesmowbray
PHOTO VIEWER/EDITOR/SLIDESHOW A_C's s2v and HTC Album
FILE EXPLORER: Total Commander (has drag & drop!)
==============================
I am having compatibility problems, and I can't seem to troubleshoot the conflict sources. So it's time for a new ROM install, and rebuild my suite of apps. I'm hoping I can get a few recs on ROMS, application launchers, dialers.
USABILITY REQUIREMENTS: I am a power user, but not a techie. I currently have been using iFonz, have liked it a lot. Large target areas for finger navigation is very impt to me, especially when driving. Any of the basic windows soft key areas, scrollbars, OK button, Top-bar icons are not big enough, creating for me constant flow of mistakes and "stalls" in completing just the baseline functions of "Speakerphone On/Off", Hide Keypad/Show keypad etc.
If I had my way I would never have to touch any aspect of the Windows Mobile Interface.. but alas, that is not yet a reality. But getting closer day by day, example: supbro just today released a "green button" app that ties his iDialer app to the windows default dialer. A major breakthrough in usability.
What's Impt to me and Not Impt to me: (for Recommendations' sake):
NOT IMPT: I never run games, don't care. Weather is nice, but not impt. SMS and MMS are lo priority for me, I rarely use them.
MOST IMPT:
1. Basic phone functions, that allow me to take the phone out of my pocket and not end up accidentally ending the call before even getting the phone to my ear. Similarly, not having something accidentally trigger DIALING A FRIEND's NUMBER, or last redial. Big large phone dialpad, with large phone number display, bullet-proof "speakerphone on/off", bullet-proof "SAVE TO CONTACTS" without all the windows mobile backflips of "select Save to Contacts" then do I press "NEW CONTACT" or what? Just terrible usability design. Easy to find REDIAL.
2. Contacts: Contact manager with THUMBNAIL PHOTOS list, jump to alphabet letter, LARGE target area for finger to tap-and-dial in 1-step, not going to a detail screen to select WHICH number, or do I want to send email or SMS.
3. MP3 player: big obvious target area for volume control, and timeline slider, next song, etc. Integration with hard keys for next song, pause, mute. (S2u2 already does this, but there are still some squirrely problems, which create that dreaded problem of wanting to turn it off asap but no, gotta do backflips to get to the interface.)
4. CLOSE ALL APPS: since the Wing has the crappy old processor of its predecessor (MDA), and limited RAM, there are always times when apps lock up, and you just want to close everthing
5. one-click WIFI ON/OFF -- I don't want to go through some cumbersome Communication Manager. When I get home to my network, or I am at a Starbucks and want to use Tmobile Hotspot, it should be a no-brainer: wifi is turned on, all available networks show by default, all in one step. Just as if I take my Macbook Pro to a cafe, click one icon, see all networks. To me it would be even greater if, when I was at a Tmobile Hotspot, 1 click would *turn on wifi, *launch Tmobile's hotspot utility
6. Voice Command, Handwriting SIP, and a bunch of other things.
=======================
I'm hoping someone will take me up on this big-picture request. Thank you
(reserved for photos/ videos of my current configuration)
saving this space to come back and add some photos and videos that demonstrate the problems I want to solve.
You've been a member long enough to know that "Recommend a Rom" threads usually get closed.
You've done a good job listing what exactly you're looking for but still the title is along the lines of a noobie swooping in and asking for the best rom.
Where you do differ is that you've obviously put a lot of thought into what you're looking for but alas the thread title doesnt accurately reflect the depth of your post.
Honestly this sounds like the idea that launched a project. The question is will you step up and coordinate the project?
If so I would recommend you retitle this thread and take the concept to the next step.

Hey thanks for replying, kyphur. Honestly, I actually didn't know that... but hold on -- there are 2 reasons why is this. So I will explain, because my intention is not to break rules & protocols -- i have too much respect for this community:
(a) I'm actually not a regular here to see those patterns. I started with an MDA, learned how to use XDA-dev site to try to find answers, went through my initiation of asking dumb questions, getting slapped to "use search, damnit", found my way to understanding the cultuyre and rules.. but even after a year I was too scared to ever try a mod on my MDA. And it wasn't til I got my Wing that I finally jumped in to do the whole shebang -- from hardSPL, to ROM installation, etc. With great help from various members here, like papamopps. And once I get something working, I am not frequenting the site, other than for subscribed threads to Apps that are still in development that I am using -- like for example iContact and iDialer. Because I really rely upon my phone for work, and once it's doing what I need it to do, I generally am not cruising looking for "the next great thing".
I want to add, though, that inasmuch as it may sound as though I am merely a taker and not a giver, the way that I give is by donating to the app developers and ROM chefs whose products I have used. And if you ask A_C and ssj5trunks, for example, my donations are large -- as my best way to compensate back. Also, I volunteer to host websites, and for example A_C hosts part of his new site www.A2-s2.com with me -- and I am happy to be of service that way.
(b) The second reason I didn't explicitly know that was a rule here is because I tend to mostly be in the WING/Herald "silo" -- and there, the user Pureskillz is known for doing thorough Reviews of Roms -- which are amazing -- and I have asked before in threads in that section for recs on which ROM might be fastest for me to use to run iFonz, and I have gotten really helpful replies.
This is all quite different from a newbie parachuting in to say "hey guys, what should I use on my Wing, i want to have an iphone type of phone". So thank you for letting me know - i honestly did not know this was verboten

Gotcha. Okay, I will go rename it: How would this sound?

I don't know if that's any better... but
Honestly this sounds like the idea that launched a project. The question is will you step up and coordinate the project?

Actually, this is exactly part of what I want to do, but on a "clean page" so as to give newbies an easier pathway IN to understanding what is even AVAILABLE to them. But my interest is in mainstream users, not so much in the tricked-out overclocked custom registry code-writing userbase. Because to me, the whole site in its entirety is geared for those users.
So yes, I am wanting to create a website that places a mainstream-friendly "front end" to this amazing knowledge-base. All links would be attributed and linked to the actual XDA threads. But I want to provide capsule summaries that help users understand where they are being sent, and how they should approach a "Release" thread... What they can expect, the protocols for asking for help, etc.
So yes, I have given a lot of thought to what I think, as a Usability and Information Designer, is a huge gap between mainstream phione users who are finding out about XDA for first time -- largely thru YouTube videos which kinda blow their minds -- because its functionality is so beyond what is marketed to them as possible via carriers like (in USA) T-Mobile, AT&T, etc -- and the ability to comprehend this site -- which is gargantuan in nature, and a maze of complexity for a newbie.
Let me give a very tangible example: I would bet you that probably less than 1% of the users of Windows Mobile in the USA, who are using for example, the T-Mobile Wing, have any idea at all that they can get for free GPS location tracking on their phones, right now, today, just by using Google Maps. It's not ever presented to users. So you have this huge population of people who have a truly awesome function available for their phones right now -- that they have no idea is the case.
I was just discussing this in San Francisco the other day with the Product Development Manager at Google for the Google Maps product line.
So: re stepping up to the plate: one of the parts I have in mind is to help facilitate the assembly of -- the creation of -- these "Configuration Profiles" which would seek to create common function-sets that certain types of users would likely say "YES, THAT ONE, that's matches the kinds of things I am looking for.
So, with that in mind, I wanted to try it out here, and see if this would be something users here would support as being worthwhile, or more of just a pain in the ass. And, the timing is such that I really have had more and more problems having my Wing function effectively, and I know from my own experiences that the selection of a ROM is really quite critical to building the suite of apps & functionality I desire.
If so I would recommend you retitle this thread and take the concept to the next step.

I am fine with your deleting the thread if it really isn't appropriate for the site. I was looking very carefully for where to post this, and this seemed like the best place. What are your thoughts?
thank you.

The concept sounds great. I agree with you in that many people want functionality but who dont have the technical knowledge, (or want it initially) but who wish to maximise their devices usefulness. They also may not want to risk damaging something they have just paid £500 for. How many times have i had my friends come upto me and say, how did you do that? can i have it? can you do it for me? haha....
Whilst some may say this is not in the spirit of xda as one should not venture into the depths of winmo without technical knowledge, i believe it adheres to its basic principles and that xda should continue in its evolvement (sorry my spelling is crap today); the more the members the greater the knowledge.
Whilst i only have a Polaris and Prophet, i would be interested in this dev project as it could encompass all devices. It would benefit xda in that noobies who dont or cant get to grasp with the technicalities have somewhere (one place) to "glorify" their device. I think once the new members have blinged their device, their interest and curiousity expands... "mm i wonder what else i can do". THis leads to further reading and learning and such new blood and knowledge can only be of benefit.
Count me in.
@quick site
Sounds like you want to either get into cooking your own rom, or should grab an ultralite rom and install everything you want.
You may want to try task facade for a task manager. everything pops up with a large screenshot and to close apps you just have to long hold them.
You can set task facade to a hardbutton (or if your hardbuttons are all full you can use hbutton which allows you to map several programs to one key)
An introductory video example: to orient a new user

Thanks for replying. ... Here's the video I recently added to YouTube just to show in a non-technical way WHAT one could do on their T-Mobile Wing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSc0Qz8tf_c
As I told the Google Maps Mobile product manager, I don't think a tiny fraction of people know about the GPS functioning just via Google Maps usage. This video would not appeal to the vast majority of XDA Members, however, because it is meant to be a soft-introduction to "outsiders", vs an information-packed walk-through or installation guide.

My area of professional expertise is usability design, consumer content design, information design. I spent over a year getting the feel of XDA site before I jumped in to try to mod my Wing. I learned the culture, realized there were LOTS of preliminary things which I had no idea about, and had to first assemble a macro knowledge set up: what is Hardl SPL, what is an RUU, what is a radio rom, does a ROM have Windows Mobile OS in it? If so, Is it a legal license? what does "brick my phone" mean? ... I went to the Herald wiki, I saw guides for noobs to read, I read them, but then circular questions like: "Be sure to read XXXXX's great guide to flashing"... So I read this guide, many of them, and they'll say "be sure to make sure whether you have version x or version y; if X, never Hard SPL, if Y, it's okay; then a thread "Hard SPL working on WING!", then more guides how to Hard SPL your phone. Then you're supposed to pick a ROM.
If you ask for advice, you're told "start reading; everyone has different needs". SO you read up, use search, end up on a thread you think applies to ROMS for your phone, only to be 12 pages into the thread before you grasp the concept that this thread and this ROM is only for an HTC Himalaya. ANd it's completely irrelevant to my quest.
But senior people here would say "It's obvious, you were in the wrong area; look at the wiki, it has a list of phones, only search for ROMS for that phone"... but some ROMS are for many phones. Anyone, this is nothing new to those experienced with XDA. And I understand the frustration of senior members who keep posting stickies to help Newbies prep properly and not just dive in to ask "how do I get iphone on by HTC Touch?" etc.
But as can be seen very clearly from THIS SEMINAL THREAD, "Let People Ask Whatever They Like", that there is a culture "war" developing on XDA between those who feel adamantly: this site is for tinkerers, and if you've come just to get "kewl" stuff for your phone, you're in the wrong place. While other senior members are adamantly in the other corner of "why not help people? So what if they ask stupid questions? Just move on, ignore them, you don't need to chastise everyone."
Whilst i only have a Polaris and Prophet, i would be interested in this dev project as it could encompass all devices. It would benefit xda in that noobies who dont or cant get to grasp with the technicalities have somewhere (one place) to "glorify" their device. This is nice to hear. The biggest problem with any knowledge base is in formation design. Despite the wiki, despite the sticky threads, despite the SIG LINES with links to Help Guides, despite the warnings, it is my professional opinion that this spectacular knowledge-base called XDA-Developers, is like a big tinker-toy project with new arms constantly being added, and nodes that even everyday users don't even know about, because they are specialized areas for particular phones etc. And now there is a whole new initiative ( A GREAT ONE!) to develop for the Android platform.
To me, creating some landing pages that help orient newcomers without overloading them with a huge maze of a dense site -- helps everyone:
* for sure helps the newbie
* helps the senior members (who will see yet another 100 threads open per day with same old new questions) from having to constantly look at "101" type questions.
* helps the software authors in getting donations for their works by more easily shuttling newcomers to the specific kinds of apps they have been looking for.
I think we are seeing a crossroads right now, with the launch of the Apple Apps store, the Android Apps store, Blackberry's store, and Windows' expected entry (what's it called, Skyapps ?)... Critical mass has now been reached in the marketplace for owners of toucscreen devices to now embrace specialized apps and functions that fit specific needs, and manufacturers and carriers are finally figuring this out. XDA sits is a very unusual place amongst all this, given the open-source spirited "knowledge-share & donate" philosophy of the site. I think there will be longtime veteran members here who will not be happy with influxes of even MORE news trying to get the latest & greatest. I just believe the dam has broken, and it might be good to filter newcomers and orient them (my interest), vs having them flood in and irritate the **** out of the people who built this community...
Sorry for the lenghts of these posts. I'm just wanting to be clear.

Thanks. Yes, that's what I have done to date. I started with a PapaMopps ROM, then moved to an OpenTouch ROM, and now am trying to consider WHICH ultralite woud work best for my configuration. It's these snags like dialers that confound me. AND which topbar is overriding another -- for exmaple, when iFonz is in use, it overrides the top bar with access to windows start logo, etc.

Thank you for the rec. i will search for Task Facade.
I also just found WkTask from a thread here at XDA -- and tried it out. Now THAT's what I'm looking for... but again, it's the conflcit with apps or interfaces that overlay that top bar so that it is not a constant.
You can set task facade to a hardbutton (or if your hardbuttons are all full you can use hbutton which allows you to map several programs to one key)

Ahh, I never new until now about Hbutton. That's exactly what I need! I will search for it too. I am guessing it is context sensitive -- and offers a different default action depending on which app is the one in use?
thanks very much.

Assume you are going to set up your own site for this project or is this something you are going to do on xda? im interested in assisting in this in which ever direction you want this to go, so let me know and i will find some time and buy some more coffee....
I'm not sure quite what you want to achieve, but I think what you want is a less technical (i.e. suitable for normal people) way to access the information here.
This sub forum was brought about because it was decided that new users probably wouldn't have a huge technical knowledge, so it woul be better to let them ask about "what's x" somewhere where people want to help rather than hack. So in a sense, this sub forum goes part way to achieving that.

***WELCOME***
Welcome everyone who has a question, but just can't seem to find an answer. My hope is that this thread will reduced the extremely large number of new threads being created for every little issue each user is having. The rules are very simple. Please follow them, as it's just not that hard.
1) Absolutely NO FLAMING. I am completely inflexible on this rule. If i catch you do it, you will get an xda vacation (will be banned, in case you don't get it). Also, just to be clear, "use the search function" is not an acceptable answer in this thread.
2) Before you post you MUST read THIS. Trust me, I will know if you didn't.
3) Anyone can post any issue they're having with their Raphael in this thread, but you MUST include a detailed description of your issue. If after a couple days your issue has not been addressed, please feel free to bump it.
4) Remember you are asking for help, and the as the saying goes "it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar. So be nice to those who are helping you.
5) Please quote the person you are replying to, it will make it MUCH easier for people to sort through the many messages that will end up in here.
This is an experiment based on a suggestion by another users, so we will see how it goes. If all goes well then i hope that this thread will be a great help to many new members. If not then we will make adjustments. I want to thank all those who will be contributing to this forum for their time in advance, as i certainly know i won't be answering these questions all by myself.
Note: If you feel your thread has been moved here in error, please PM me politely and ask me to move the related posts back into their own thread. Sometimes the wrong threads get moved here by accident. Please also provide a clear explanation of why you think this topic deserves it's own thread. Angry tirades and rants will be of no use, and will more likely than not simply get you a warning or a ban.
bad blocks on TOUCH PRO
hi all. My touch pro crashed several times today after I changed another ROM. I think that would be the problem of the ROM, so I changed it back to the original ROM, but it didn't help cause it still get crash. So I tried MTTY with "info 8" command and I got a unfortunately result, there are 13 bad blocks on my device. I also tried to fix it with "task 2a" command but nothing happened. Does anyone have any ideas about this case? May be my touch pro is the first one which has bad blocks...pls help! THANKS!
According to the author of this topic, his TP has 8 bad blocks and according to cmonex her's also has 8 bad blocks and you are lucky you didn't kill you SPL with task 2a as it is intended for the Hermes.
Maybe the crashes are due to applications you have installed or a bad flash. Try running a rom without extra apps for a few days and see how it goes.
Edit: Out of curiosity I have also checked mine and I also have 8 bad blocks
Code:
BLOCK 486 (0x1E6) is bad block
BLOCK 821 (0x335) is bad block
BLOCK 1233 (0x4D1) is bad block
BLOCK 1989 (0x7C5) is bad block
BLOCK 2352 (0x930) is bad block
BLOCK 2854 (0xB26) is bad block
BLOCK 3095 (0xC17) is bad block
BLOCK 3170 (0xC62) is bad block
thanks for your reply man, but I wanna tell you that I've already tried out the original official rom without any other extra apps, but it still crash a lot.
I have thirteen bad blocks BTW, not eight.
On Screen Keyboard Problem
Ok, here's another one I can't figure out. For some reason, the large on screen keyboard will only allow the input of numbers and symbols. Pressing the "ABC" key on the side does nothing. It used to work and now it doesn't. Any ideas of what is wrong? The compact QWERTY on screen keyboard works fine....... I have, of course, already tried all of the settings under "keyboard" in the settings menu.
weather update via activesync
Hi,
Is it possible to update the weather automatically when synchronising via activesync?

Sending a text message with the enter key
Hello everyone!
I was wondering if there was anyway to send a text message without touching the screen to press the send button. I would like to be able to press "Enter" and have it send the message. I do not need it to be a carriage return in this case.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Manilla Editor
Hey guys,
I'm fairly new to the forums, but have really gotten into flashing and editing everything about my raphael
One issue I have been having is editing the graphics on the device. I have read alot about manilla editor, and so downloaded it, but the only one I could find was for the Diamond ... I tried installing it, but it failed. Does anyone know where the TP version is?
oh n in advance...Sorry if this is a noob question.
Skype out of Front Speaker instead of Rear Speaker?

I know about using headphones/ bluetooth, but without either of them?

AFAIK, a similar thread exists in the Skype user forum and states that it is not possible as WM will not offer an API function to access the front speaker.

This has been an issue since WM 6.1 was released. I'm not sure they'll ever really fix it.
Noob Fuze key mapping question
Just picked one up today.
Is there a way to map the Home key to windows start? Seems alien to me not to have that on a hardkey.
Using AEBPlus you can remap all buttons INSTEAD home and back(that's actually ok/close).
You can assign long press green key to open start menu for example.
Unfortunately,home/back can be remaped as well, but they have its own functions untouched,so there are conflicts with opening something/going home...
Now I tried that to use with long press home button,OS goes to home and the StartMenu appears. This is nowadays the maximum we could achieve.
How about re-mapping of the PTT key?
Does it show up as a button for AEBPlus to re-map or will that require a registry change as with the Tilt?

Requires a reg edit, I was able to do it on my pre-release but apparently something's changed since then. All my reg edit does on current Fuzes is stops the PTT button from popping up the notification.
Ultra slow Backup of Fuze with Sprite Backup - 15MB out of 110 MB after 50 minutes
Hi all,
I had successfully used Sprite Backup with Tilt and the backup took 10 minutes tops,
now with Fuze it took 50 minutes to backup 15MB out of 110MB it needs to backup,
and I tried it several times right after doing a soft rest as well to make sure nothing is in its way.
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? I'm about to try SPB Backup (if the trial works without limitation) and see if it work with it,
but I'm puzzled why it's taking this long with the bundled Sprite Backup.
Also the device does not freeze up, it's continuing to backup very little by little.
The backup speed is so slow that the Sprite report is indicating "0 KB/second" speed in the report.
There are no other errors in the report other than failing to backup PTT\VoiceBuffer.dat which I believe is not related to this issue.
Update; I was able to backup with SPB Backup; it only took 5 minutes and it said it backed up 50MB so looks like the problem is with Sprite.

^^^This info does not update on it's own^^^
I have created a very simple but useful application called Log This. In short, it lets end-users get logcat logs (perhaps the app didn't crash - but it isn't working right.) without all the ADB fuss that surrounds logcat. It is meant to be simple for end users and powerful for developers.
It includes pastebin support that makes it easy to paste to your favorite android development forum, not mentioning any names that start with X.
Android Market Description said:
Log This is an application that can read logs given a provided tag and log level - and send them to developers. This saves them the hassle of having to use logcat on their computer with ADB.
As a developer, requesting the READ_LOGS permission is risky - it scares away a lot of users. Log This uses this permission, but is meant to be used by developers to request their end users to send in debug logs - one app to log em' all.
As an end user, you can install the app and help out your developers when they need debugging on specific phone models - provided they have logging enabled (perhaps via a logging mode).
It also can fetch kernel (panic) logs, as long as you supply the location of the log (a kernel developer can tell you if it does or not - not all kernels do)
This application is NOT optimized for tablets, but it should work on them. I don't have one to test with.
Permissions Explained:
READ_LOGS: Application has to be able to read the logs - the only data read is displayed in the email
INTERNET/CHECK_NETWORK_STATE: Advertising
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Used for building the log file. I leave the latest log as log.txt on the root of your media area (internal SD) so that you can always check it yourself.

I know there is an app called Log Collector already but I want to create some additional features.
Some new features that will be coming soon:
Three Click Logs - click on a file, accept the preview, click send. (file association)
I hope someday this app will be really useful.
Thoughts?
More otpions is always good. Thanks.
Balancing school, work, research (GibberTalk) and this app will be one great task
My friend and I were just discussing making an app like this. You beat us to the punch and you did a great job at doing that. Will it be okay to include your app in custom ROMs?
Of course! Just make sure it is linked to android market (so it will update itself). And as long as the rom isn't sold for money (I hear some roms are?). Happy cooking!
Awesome thanks a bunch!
Thanks! This should help a novice like myself.

Yes, but did you hit the "THANKS" button?
Hi,
I'm quite new to Android.
It definitely will be helpful to me when I want to help a developer.
I have a question.
Does this app run itself in the background or do I have to enable it?
You must run this app yourself. A logging service would seem kind of creepy Logcat is ~10000 long (thats as far as my eclipse one goes anyway) so you should have a good 10 minutes, unless your device just booted, then DLNA parser (at least on my atrix, perhaps its just the media scanner) will flood your logcat for like 10 minutes.
The way this app is intended to work (end users wise, not as devs)
Devs either have logging/debug mode or have logging on by default
end-user experiences odd behavior/crash (crashes on 2.2 can be sent through 'reporting' to the market)
End user asks dev why this doesn't work
Dev either A) gives user file that auto collects needed info (they just have to send), and they open it after they start the app/it doesn't work properly or B) dev gives them the needed info (not much) to fill out the forms and send it in.
PROFIT!

yes i did already hit the button
Forgive me for not fully understanding the logging process. I'm on Serendipity VII. Will your program 'turn on' logging, or is there something I still have to do to enable it?
Android has a user-hidden system called LogCat that is always running. You can oly see it with the logcat command built into the system (also accessible through ADB, its very VERY useful for developers for debugging/seeing what is going on). This just runs the 'logcat command' (prints out text) and filters it out. This app just captures that log command (with the filters)

I see. I thought I'd read that you had to enable it in recovery or something - thank you for the education!
Hello,
I'm planning to communicate a procedure to use this app to the users of my own app who encounter problems.
There are however some questions / remarks I already have :
"Log an application tag" field : is this the TAG constant we pass to the android.util.Log.* calls ? In this case, I personally use several different tags in the same app so this would not be enough for all cases.
internationalization : the app is in english only, is it possible to help translating ? I can do it for french...
in the screenshots at the market, there is a screen that I don't have on my device : ss-480-1-1 (the one with the nice looking arrows "keep it private" / "make it public"), is it an old screen ?
From my first tests, it looks like there is not a lot of logs extracted, but I didn't tested it extensively. I'll will test it more and give you more feedback, thanks for this possibly great alternative to Log Collector !
I am soon going to add multiple tags, but they will all have to use the same level. I've been incredibly busy with my schoolwork that just started (and it sucks too!)
The app right now is english only. I can work on making it more translatable, but I throw a mix of R.string.xx with string literals.
The 'keep it private' screen isn't there cause it was a GIMPED photo. To promote your app you should add text. That would never fit on a small screen. Still trying to make screen scaling better than just scroll panes. It'll get there though.
How long before your app is released?
Edit: Or how long would you need? I have some ideas that could be wrapped around this:
Should all the tags be inline?
Should they be spread across .txt files? (Although that would be a bit more difficult as iirc the gmail app only supports up to 5)
I'd list more but my class is about to start

Don't worry, just do your schoolwork, I am not in need, just thinking about the next features I could implement in my app(s)

Ok, no pb. If you need a translator in the future you know where to find me

Anyway, I was just curious. Using images to give important indications to user is probably not a very accessible thing...

I've just released one already, soon in the app forum of xda, if I manage to get some time to do it right...
As I said, I'm not in need of any blocking feature... I think using "Log this" doesn't need to be programmatically integrated in the application, and that's a good point for me. We just need to tell users to install it and what parameters to use, on a per case basis.

I haven't thought about it yet, but a txt file looks too much complicated for users... Maybe it's best to uncheck the corresponding checkbox if there are multiple tags, or to use some generic patterns like "my.package.*"...
Also I was wondering if a simple URI like logthis://tag=TAG1&tag=TAG2&level=debug&... could be easily parsed as an Intent by some BroadcastReceiver...? This would help the developer give the user the right parameters via e-mail or other...
Again, this would require more thinking before considering those as good ideas and implement them... Maybe this will give you a starting point...
Nice tool, thanks a lot
@Mgamerz : Here is my app "SwitchDataSwitch" at xda : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287025
I will soon include a chapter on how to use Log This in case of problem on the website : http://bitbucket.org/nicobo/switchdataswitch
Fyi, the next version might include a direct link to use Log This.
---------- Post added at 12:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:49 PM ----------
By the way, this is a first test, I think I will generalize the use of both Log This and Log Collector in my future apps, thanks.
