[Q]Share PC's internet connection With PPC using Bluetooth (not via activesync) - General Questions and Answers

Hope the title says everything about my problem.
HTC P3452 (ELFIN) using a custom 6.1 ROM(with the default MS BT stack)
Windows XP Professional SP3 using Widcomm BT stack
UTSTARCOM router to connect to the internet.
My problem:
I want to use bluetooth as the primary medium of connection between PC and PPC .
By 'connection'; I only mean efficient file sharing and internet connection sharing (only from PC to PPC; not the other way round; 'cause I don't have a GPRS/EDGE data plan on my PPC)
MS Activesync does both of these (but not very efficiently) , and there are a lot tutorials on how to connect PC and PPC using Bluetooth and then sync them using Activesync. But as everyone knows, being the crappiest software ever Activesync often auto-disconnects, even if the PC and PPC are still connected by bluetooth .
Using the ready-made solutions provided by the Widcomm Software, it's very easy to share files, as the MS stack supports FTP.
The Widcomm software also offers a service named "My network access" and creates a Bluetooth LAN connection on PC; and those were supposed to be able to establish a LAN connection between PC and PPC over Bluetooth, but it doesn't .
(The MS BT stack of Windows Mobile doesn't enable PAN by default. I used a hack by some user of this forum (wm6btpan) . But that doesn't seem to solve the problem either, although it enables me to use my PPC as a remote control.. )
So at this point, I need your help in establishing the connection between the PC and PPC so that the PPC can use PC's internet connection. For the last 1.5 days I have searched nearly hundreds of resources but nowhere found a complete solution working for a HTC Touch. If , with your help ,I can get my setup going, then I promise to put up a full fledged tutorial on how to do this...
Hoping early response..

read this?

as I ve already written , I 've already gone through hundreds of threads in different forums, and it was definitely one of them.. the last few instructions
are..
# Tap the Bluetooth icon and tap the link saying Bluetooth Manager.
# Tap the starred Bluetooth icon.
# Tap the Join a personal network.
# Select Join a personal network option and tap Next.
# After your Connection Wizard sees your computer, select it and select Finish so that your HTC Creates a shortcut for this connection named Network with '?InsertYourComputersNameHere'. Please note that there is no need for a secure/encrypted connection.
# Double tap or hold and select Connect to the Network with '?InsertYourComputersNameHere' to make a connection with your access point.
# At this point or later, your HTC will ask you if this connection is a Work or Internet connection. I have chosen this as my Work connection.
But in HTC TOUCH there is no "bluetooth manager" or "join a personal network option" (probably they were in WM5). So this wiki doesn't help much..
anyway thanks for your response.

no one else interested ?

hey.. forum veterans.. please respond...

still no one ?
forum mod, can u please move it to the elfin forum ?

Bluesoil BT Stack Problem and PAN

Hi again and again folkes!!!
I recently instaled the (in)famous bluesoil bt stack that was found in a recent topic here at xda... first impression was good but... there is always a but... i've noticed that it ****s up my gprs connection and my modem settings... gprs network card disapears even when i return to MS BT... any soluction to solve this problem? i use the S110 to connect to msn in a regular basis and it sucks not being able to use it... and if someone bothers.. how (dont know if its possible) to stream video/sound from my pc via bluetooth and how to acess shared folders in my pc from the pocket also via bt? i already set auto ip(DHCP) in both... no way... assigned ip's in both and still nothing. If someone give it a time to post a How-to about PAN and VCN(control pc with pocket via bt) and other nice but strange to most users it would be very apreciated.
Deactivate the GPRS before installing
which installer of blusoleil stack do u use? is it the xxx.r2.arm ?
in this case the gprs problem should not appear, otherwise, you have to disconnect the GPRS so that only the white "G" appears.
installing the stack with shown the "G" only the GPRS Settings will work well after installation.
but another question, do u use the pan? and if its working for you
can u PLEASE post all the settings of your 3 lan adapters (btpda btwin and lanwin)
*gate/ip/dns/sub for each adapter and the ics on which adapter.
i'm getting the same error message every time if i try to activate the ics.
(like: 192.168.0.1*needed for ics could not be assigned, the ip adress is assigned to another pc in the network) i'm using german xp, don't know the exact words.
after reading 1000 posts and trying this all the last week and the pan won't work.
thx for every tip

Internet Sharing. How to use it?

Hi to all.
In the new roms from WM 6. Have and application called "Internet sharing"
I want to use the USB cable (not bluetooth) to connect mi laptop to internet trought my universal 3G.
How i use it?
I activate the connection. Mark the USB and my 3G definition. Connect. It's connecto 3G. And in the laptop i cant navigate.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks.
You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!
First, connect the PDA to the net by selecting usb connection and your default 3g connection, push connect and then connect the PDA to the laptop and it will be seen as some modem or something else.
You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!
Thanks.
But dont wotk for me.
The laptop detect the connection sharing. But the laptop don't navigate on internet.
The Pda navigate Ok.
am having the same problems too. ive followed above posted instructions but no dice.
in my case, the connect button is grayed out.
think i may have to configure either VPN, or ADD MODEM CONNECTION or SETUP PROXY SERVER. either way i dont have any idea how.
ROM: black shadow 4
RADIO: 1.43

Hi,
I can describe, how I am using this feature in Vista.
First I do prefer to use Bluetooth over USB. The reason: it is very often that I am in the room, were the GSM/3G signal is poor. Then I can place my Uni in the window or other place were the signal is much stronger, and connect with the Uni using Bluetooth. The transfer is more or less on the same level as on USB anyway.
Now, Internet sharing option is a new function in WM6, bit like internet sharing in desktop windows. Our PC is not using the Uni as a modem. It uses it as kind of gateway to internet, meaning it use different protocols then with modem connection.
So, after pairing my Uni with my PC in Bluetooth, I got another kind of network connection on my network connections list. It is marked as closed connection with red mark on Bluetooth icon on this list. Then I go to internet sharing in my Uni and select Bluetooth Pan option and then click “Connect”. It establishes its own connection to internet using setup, previously configured in my Uni.
Then, in my PC I go to Network connections list and just click “Bluetooth network connection” icon. This makes my PC to connect with my Uni via Bluetooth using network (TCP/IP) protocol and use it as normal internet gateway. If I click the icon once more, then I get window showing standard connection with bites transferred, buttons for options, disconnection and so on. It shows that the connection is with 1Gb/s, but this is only for connection with my Uni. The connection from Uni to Internet is , obviously much slower and depends of local conditions and 3G standard.
Hope I could help.
Edit:
If I try to do the same over USB, then there is a problem. After connecting USB cable, my PC automatically goes into AS mode and syncs with my Uni. Then If in internet sharing I select USB and click "Connect" the syncing stops, AS in Uni shuts down (this is OK), but my PC try to install a new driver for new device and it does not find it, so it can not recognize my Uni as a proper gateway to connect with over USB. If it would install a driver then on Network connections list a new connection should show up, probably named as "USB network connection".
That’s the other reason I do not use it this way.
Show second and third post. Expain how to quit USB in AS to use this feature.
I will try this trroght BT, but (for me) via Cable is better, the pda is charging all the time. Via Bluetooth the battery goes down quickly.
People need help. I flashed my cingular 8125 with crossbow reloaded rom, its great but cannot seem to understand how to use internet connection sharing to get my laptop online. under network connections i can see that my phone is connected to the internet. but my laptop refuses to browse any site. i have winxp.

Check your firewall. In this mode, you are loged to a new network with different IP than your IP from your home network, if any. Using internet sharing your computer gets IP from your PPC. In my case it is 192.168.0.xx and the gateway is 192.168.0.1. It means that if your firewall was set to accept your home network with different IP, then you have to set it to accept this new IP as well. Oherways you will not get any comunication through this chanell. Of cource, this suggestion is valid only if you have any other firewall then Windows Defender.

I am using this in Vista. There is something named as Center for Windows Mobile Cervices. This is Vista version of AS. Here I do not need to quite USB and AS. Simply set Internet sharing option in your PPC for Bluetooth PAN and then click "Connect" in PPC. After that, click "Bluetooth Network Connection" in your Network Connections List in the PC. You will get the page with list of bluetooth access points. You should see your PPC device marked as the default device. Bellow you have "Connect" button. Click it and you are done.
By the way, the second and other posts describe the attempt to connect in the old way using modem connection. WM6 does not provide the modem support for PC connection. It means that officialy you can not use WM6 device as a modem like with WM5 or Symbian devices. However, HTC has released the modem driver for WinXP and Vista for new WM6 as an after market support. You can google for this on HTC pages. I never used this, cause this new way seems to me a lot easier. Also I never heard about anybody who succeeded with does drivers.
I use Windows Xp and the firewall is OFF
With the new WM6 rom of Ivan works for me

Hi, just checking, my O2 WM5 rom don't come with the "Internet Sharing" program.
May I know how to get it?
My current rom version is 1.30.107

Couldn't get to Internet using Bluetooth PAN

I have treo 750v, WM6.
I have done the procedure below:
1. Pairing my device with the laptop via Bluetooth.
2. On my Treo, clicked start > internet connection sharing > chosing bluetooth pan > click connect.
3. Device told me to activate Bluetooth on my PC. then I activated my Bluetooth PAN on my laptop. (I'm having BlueSoleil bluetooth manager installed on my laptop).
4. Treo said "Connected". My BlueSoleil manager said connected with an animation showing a link between my device and laptop icons. It even showed some message of its assigned IP address, etc.
But, i can not connect to internet on my laptop. I did ping to google, it said "Request time out".
Very weird, because when I choose USB Cable to do internet connection sharing, the connection is working seamlessly, i can connect to internet, good ping to google or any other sites, but not with BT PAN.
Please advice what to check, what to do, etc.. thanks
no replies yet, i hope someone will read and provide some suggestion for my problem. thanks
How about using the Windows' bluetooth manager?
My bluetooth places -> entire bluetooth neighborhood -> right click on your device name -> connect Network Access Point
I use this method every time and it always works.

I tried it just now as you suggested. it then says network connected. but then i cant connect to the internet from my laptop. so i back to using the USB cable, and it works flawlessly.
i wonder where's the missing key???
Two things:
1. With the Windows bluetooth, once the devices are paired and a connection is established (Internet Sharing on the Treo), goto the little bluetooth icon in the systray and right-click on it. Click on the "Quick Connect" menu and select "Network Access". Once you have clicked on "Network Access" you should see your phone listed (my 750 shows as the name I entered for "Owner Information"). Select your phone and that should do it. These steps are similar to the ones I use for my Macbook as well.
2. Regarding BlueSoleil Manager: when I lasted used it I remember having to set up the serial ports manually so they could be used for communication between the desktop and the phone. I haven't used the BlueSoleil since I had a Treo 650, but I still have the software. I'll load it up and see if I can't help you with your problem.
Regards,
idyllic
So I got to work and loaded up BlueSoleil on a system running MS Server 2003 SP2. The bluetooth dongle I'm using is a TRENDnet TBW-101UB V2 with BlueSoleil version 1.4.9.2 build 041108, stack version 04.03.15.20041105.
I paired my stock AT&T Treo 750 to the machine. Started "Internet Sharing" on the Treo making sure to select bluetooth pan and the AT&T network Once this was done I right-clicked on my phone icon in the BlueSoleil Manager and select "Connect." The I choose the "Bluetooth Personal Area Networking Service" and open a web browser to test... so far its worked every time.
Some notes:
1. The internet sharing on the treo isn't instant, give 20 seconds or so to fully connect.
2. The BlueSoleil manager connects even slower... give it 30 seconds.
3. Try repairing the phone.
4. If using the BlueSoleil software, disable the windows bluetooth as the MAY be a conflict there. Basically use one or the other.
I'm not sure if any of this is going to help, but I hope it puts you on the right track.

idyllic

Sharing Desktop's Internet Connection using WMWiFiRouter

Hello Everyone,
When we connect WM phones over Active Sync, we are able to run internet on WM Phone through desktop's connection.
So, I have this old XDA Stealth with me, and I thought of using it as a Wireless Router for sharing Desktop's Internet Connection with Laptops and other WiFi Devices.
Upon using WMWiFiRouter, I'm getting error saying there is no connection defined. That's right because I don't have any data plan and no modem has been defined.
So how can I share my desktop's internet connection with other devices using WM Phone as a Wireless Router (wherein the only way for WM Phone to access internet is through USB Cable and Active Sync).
I would appreciate any help.
Thnx
Sonny
In other words I wanna share Desktop Pass Through Connection over WiFi.
Please help, ain't there any way of doing this?
In other words, you want to share your internet connection that came from WM Wifi, to desktop computer,.
or
You want to sharre your internet connection that came fro your desktop wifi, to your WM device?
Do you want to achieve something like:
Internet->Computer->wired link->WM device->Wi-Fi->other devices
which if it's not possible in WMWifiRouter seems an oversight, and one which the development team may want to know!
Thats right! Its this way.
Cable Model >> Desktop >> Active Sync >> WM Device >> WM Device's WiFi >> Other Devices.
Ain't this possible, if I try forwarding Active Sync's IP?
Here is what I tried,
I configured WM Phone's WiFi's IP add to 192.168.0.1.
Next I got the connection detected on my laptop and pinged the IP and got the reply, but was unable to access internet. Guess ICS was not enabled.
Now how can I forward the IP for Activesync to be used as a gateway to access internet on the laptop through the WMPhone.
i have the same problem as the thread starter here....want to use my old pda2k as a wifi router for my e71...pass through works on pda2k but wmwifirouter doesnt work!
worked follow exact instruction on this page!
http://support.wmwifirouter.com/documentation/41/USB_to_Wifi
Hey Thnx!
I got it working!. But the range and speed sucks!
Is there any way of increasing the range of WM5 device's WiFi interface?
I'm planning to plug a wire to the WiFi antenna and connect it to an aluminium sheet which would be like a parabola covering one side of the phone, hope this would work well.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Can't get Bluetooth PAN WM to WM to work

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to get on the internet with my Axim x51v.
And I'm using my Touch Cruise as BT PAN access point (using the Internet sharing option).
I've installer the widcomm bluetooth stack on my x51v, because the Microsoft stack cannot connect to a PAN.
Settings up the PAN connection works perfectly, the x51v even got his IP from the Cruise his DHCP.
But... when I'm trying to browse to a website, it goes wrong
Internet Explorer on the x51v gives the message: "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again."
I also installed a network sniffer on the Cruise to check which data is send.
This sniffer views the DHCP request, no problem there.
But when I request a website, there are some ARP requests and responses.
AND... there are to packet who look like DNS requests to me, but there source address is the x51v's MAC address and th destination is the Cruise, and there's never a response.
So... I tried to connect to a website by IP instead of hostname, to check if this is a DNS problem, but without any luck
But there is a difference, the sniffer now only shows the ARP requests and responses and Internet Explorer gives a different message: "The page cannot be displayed or donwloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Sorry for the long story... I hope someone can help me with this problem
Or point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance
did you try working with something other than the x51v?
btw, if you want to save yourself the headache, purchase WMWifiRouter..
I also tested this with my PC and Cruise and it worked perfectly. I was able to access the internet through the Cruise.
Forgot to mention that I did try WMWifiRouter, but got the same problem.
edit:
Maybe its usefull to know that the x51v is running WM6.1 (from Football) and the Cruise is running the official WM6.1 ROM from HTC.
Maybe someone knows another way to access the internet on the x51v through the Cruise.
I did also try the Wifi to 3G option from WMWifiRouter. At first the connection was to unstable to browse, but this problem seems to be solved by holding the Cruise further away from the x51v . But with a distance of almost 3 meters the connection still isn't stable enough, it reconnect about every minute.
And I think a distance of 3 meters between the two devices is to much.
Would it be possible to share the Cruise his internet connection over USB?
My idea is to do this using this CF USB card for the x51v.
if the polaris can read your device as a regular syncing device (like a pc or so) there's no reason why WMWifirouter won't pass your Polaris' 3G or Wifi connection to USB connection on your x51v.
I found another solution!
I (re)enabled DUN on the Cruise (throught the registry) and let the x51v dail in on the Cruise.
At first it wouldn't work, but after some messing with some settings it finally worked!
Thanks for your replies Nir36.
ahh. congrats. and a good idea it is.
if you don't mind, write the exact steps of what you did so i can put it in the GUIDES thread in the Q&A section.
Ok, here's what I did.
First to Enable DUN, which was removed since the introduction of internet sharing. (On the Cruise)
Import this keys into your registry
