Internet Sharing. How to use it? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Hi to all.
In the new roms from WM 6. Have and application called "Internet sharing"
I want to use the USB cable (not bluetooth) to connect mi laptop to internet trought my universal 3G.
How i use it?
I activate the connection. Mark the USB and my 3G definition. Connect. It's connecto 3G. And in the laptop i cant navigate.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks.

You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!

First, connect the PDA to the net by selecting usb connection and your default 3g connection, push connect and then connect the PDA to the laptop and it will be seen as some modem or something else.
You have to disable the USB connection in activesync on your PDA, as well on your laptop. Mine worked with WM05!

Thanks.
But dont wotk for me.
The laptop detect the connection sharing. But the laptop don't navigate on internet.
The Pda navigate Ok.

am having the same problems too. ive followed above posted instructions but no dice.
in my case, the connect button is grayed out.
think i may have to configure either VPN, or ADD MODEM CONNECTION or SETUP PROXY SERVER. either way i dont have any idea how.
ROM: black shadow 4
RADIO: 1.43

Hi,
I can describe, how I am using this feature in Vista.
First I do prefer to use Bluetooth over USB. The reason: it is very often that I am in the room, were the GSM/3G signal is poor. Then I can place my Uni in the window or other place were the signal is much stronger, and connect with the Uni using Bluetooth. The transfer is more or less on the same level as on USB anyway.
Now, Internet sharing option is a new function in WM6, bit like internet sharing in desktop windows. Our PC is not using the Uni as a modem. It uses it as kind of gateway to internet, meaning it use different protocols then with modem connection.
So, after pairing my Uni with my PC in Bluetooth, I got another kind of network connection on my network connections list. It is marked as closed connection with red mark on Bluetooth icon on this list. Then I go to internet sharing in my Uni and select Bluetooth Pan option and then click “Connect”. It establishes its own connection to internet using setup, previously configured in my Uni.
Then, in my PC I go to Network connections list and just click “Bluetooth network connection” icon. This makes my PC to connect with my Uni via Bluetooth using network (TCP/IP) protocol and use it as normal internet gateway. If I click the icon once more, then I get window showing standard connection with bites transferred, buttons for options, disconnection and so on. It shows that the connection is with 1Gb/s, but this is only for connection with my Uni. The connection from Uni to Internet is , obviously much slower and depends of local conditions and 3G standard.
Hope I could help.
Edit:
If I try to do the same over USB, then there is a problem. After connecting USB cable, my PC automatically goes into AS mode and syncs with my Uni. Then If in internet sharing I select USB and click "Connect" the syncing stops, AS in Uni shuts down (this is OK), but my PC try to install a new driver for new device and it does not find it, so it can not recognize my Uni as a proper gateway to connect with over USB. If it would install a driver then on Network connections list a new connection should show up, probably named as "USB network connection".
That’s the other reason I do not use it this way.

Show second and third post. Expain how to quit USB in AS to use this feature.
I will try this trroght BT, but (for me) via Cable is better, the pda is charging all the time. Via Bluetooth the battery goes down quickly.

People need help. I flashed my cingular 8125 with crossbow reloaded rom, its great but cannot seem to understand how to use internet connection sharing to get my laptop online. under network connections i can see that my phone is connected to the internet. but my laptop refuses to browse any site. i have winxp.

Check your firewall. In this mode, you are loged to a new network with different IP than your IP from your home network, if any. Using internet sharing your computer gets IP from your PPC. In my case it is 192.168.0.xx and the gateway is 192.168.0.1. It means that if your firewall was set to accept your home network with different IP, then you have to set it to accept this new IP as well. Oherways you will not get any comunication through this chanell. Of cource, this suggestion is valid only if you have any other firewall then Windows Defender.

I am using this in Vista. There is something named as Center for Windows Mobile Cervices. This is Vista version of AS. Here I do not need to quite USB and AS. Simply set Internet sharing option in your PPC for Bluetooth PAN and then click "Connect" in PPC. After that, click "Bluetooth Network Connection" in your Network Connections List in the PC. You will get the page with list of bluetooth access points. You should see your PPC device marked as the default device. Bellow you have "Connect" button. Click it and you are done.
By the way, the second and other posts describe the attempt to connect in the old way using modem connection. WM6 does not provide the modem support for PC connection. It means that officialy you can not use WM6 device as a modem like with WM5 or Symbian devices. However, HTC has released the modem driver for WinXP and Vista for new WM6 as an after market support. You can google for this on HTC pages. I never used this, cause this new way seems to me a lot easier. Also I never heard about anybody who succeeded with does drivers.

I use Windows Xp and the firewall is OFF

With the new WM6 rom of Ivan works for me

Can't open internet while plugged in to pc

Even though I've told ActiveSync to "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the destktop", it doesn't work, my smartphone SP5m connected via USB on my pc keeps telling me "Check your connection/network settings" whenever I need internet access and won't open any web pages or internet applications, why?
Under Connections settings, I usually have 2 options, either "Auto-detect settings" or "Select network" which has "The Internet" selected. But none of them works
And what's the difference between those network presets (The Internet, Work, etc)?
Thanks to all!
highmighty
go to setting\connections\usb to pc and deset advanced network funcionality
No matter if "advanced network functionnality" is enabled or not, it's the same, internet won't work when my SP5m is plugged in via usb. It's surely working fine though using WIFI... any other thoughts anyone?
Thanks
Just tested, same problem here and the weird part, it works if connected with a Bluetooth connection
i have that problem too.. connected to the laptop there is no internet connection with cabel but over bluetooth..
funny thing: if i connect to the desktop computer it does work with cabel
same security software (avira antivirus and pc tools firewall)
if anyone find a solution for that i'd be very glad. the problem itself doesnt matter as connection over bluetooth is more important to me but i just cant stand how illogical it is..

Couldn't get to Internet using Bluetooth PAN

I have treo 750v, WM6.
I have done the procedure below:
1. Pairing my device with the laptop via Bluetooth.
2. On my Treo, clicked start > internet connection sharing > chosing bluetooth pan > click connect.
3. Device told me to activate Bluetooth on my PC. then I activated my Bluetooth PAN on my laptop. (I'm having BlueSoleil bluetooth manager installed on my laptop).
4. Treo said "Connected". My BlueSoleil manager said connected with an animation showing a link between my device and laptop icons. It even showed some message of its assigned IP address, etc.
But, i can not connect to internet on my laptop. I did ping to google, it said "Request time out".
Very weird, because when I choose USB Cable to do internet connection sharing, the connection is working seamlessly, i can connect to internet, good ping to google or any other sites, but not with BT PAN.
Please advice what to check, what to do, etc.. thanks
no replies yet, i hope someone will read and provide some suggestion for my problem. thanks
How about using the Windows' bluetooth manager?
My bluetooth places -> entire bluetooth neighborhood -> right click on your device name -> connect Network Access Point
I use this method every time and it always works.

I tried it just now as you suggested. it then says network connected. but then i cant connect to the internet from my laptop. so i back to using the USB cable, and it works flawlessly.
i wonder where's the missing key???
Two things:
1. With the Windows bluetooth, once the devices are paired and a connection is established (Internet Sharing on the Treo), goto the little bluetooth icon in the systray and right-click on it. Click on the "Quick Connect" menu and select "Network Access". Once you have clicked on "Network Access" you should see your phone listed (my 750 shows as the name I entered for "Owner Information"). Select your phone and that should do it. These steps are similar to the ones I use for my Macbook as well.
2. Regarding BlueSoleil Manager: when I lasted used it I remember having to set up the serial ports manually so they could be used for communication between the desktop and the phone. I haven't used the BlueSoleil since I had a Treo 650, but I still have the software. I'll load it up and see if I can't help you with your problem.
Regards,
idyllic
So I got to work and loaded up BlueSoleil on a system running MS Server 2003 SP2. The bluetooth dongle I'm using is a TRENDnet TBW-101UB V2 with BlueSoleil version 1.4.9.2 build 041108, stack version 04.03.15.20041105.
I paired my stock AT&T Treo 750 to the machine. Started "Internet Sharing" on the Treo making sure to select bluetooth pan and the AT&T network Once this was done I right-clicked on my phone icon in the BlueSoleil Manager and select "Connect." The I choose the "Bluetooth Personal Area Networking Service" and open a web browser to test... so far its worked every time.
Some notes:
1. The internet sharing on the treo isn't instant, give 20 seconds or so to fully connect.
2. The BlueSoleil manager connects even slower... give it 30 seconds.
3. Try repairing the phone.
4. If using the BlueSoleil software, disable the windows bluetooth as the MAY be a conflict there. Basically use one or the other.
I'm not sure if any of this is going to help, but I hope it puts you on the right track.

idyllic

using HTC touch cruise as a Wifi adapter for pc via usb

hi, first post here.
i have an HTC Touch Cruise with the default factory rom and it has an internal wifi antenna... I'm trying to setup a wireless network with my neighbour but my PC doesn't have a wifi adapter (and i don't have the money for one right now), so i was wondering if it is possible to make the pda some sort of adapter for the pc to use via usb/bluetooth?
One of the first thing we'll do if it's possible is to crack the wep key cause he can't rembemer the password and a hard reset to the router doesn't erase it
can also anyone suggest some tools to do that job?
I was thinking of running these tools on the pc since the pda will only serve as some kind of NIC...
hope someone can help...
Edit: Forgot to mention that i also have a bluetooh adapter on the pc if that comes of any use
P.S: Great Forum btw
There's an internet sharing option in Windows Mobile 6. Connect to the wifi network using the cruise and configure the internet sharing options. Then connect the cruise to the PC via USB and the PC should be able to access the net via the cruise's wifi connection.

i've been snoping around that part, but it asks me for a conection name in which is on <none> cause i don't have a connection configured... if i go to the connections part, i don't know what kind of connection to create as it asks me to create a VPN or an ISP connection...
how can i configure internet sharing propperly?
would i be able to crack the wep key on the pc that way? (cracking it on the pc via the pda)
1. The program you'ew looking for is WmWifiRouter 1.20, it enables you to use your phone as a WiFi -> USB adapter...
2. Ask your neigbour to use Cain on his pc... it can reveal what's written in the password boxes (if it's XP or older), reveal it in the WiFi connection settings on the pc... Whith this you won't need any WEP cracking... also he should be able to change the WEP key without the original... if he doesn't know the access code to the router that's THE problem, check the manual for default values, and try those first before attempting anything else...
3. For configuring a 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE connection you'll need a data plan from you mobile carrier... after that you can configure the connection on your PDA.
VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking (read Wiki for more info)
ISP stand for Internet Service Provider (this'll be the one you'll need)

From what i've read on this forums, WmWifiRouter is for routing my 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE to other phones via wifi, but correct me if i'm wrong lol.
what i want to do is basiclly have wifi on the pc using the pda's built in antenna...
Thanks for the tips on the router, we'll try that
i know what those acronyms mean i just don't know how to configure them for the internet sharing program...
The ICS only shares your mobile internet with one computer be it on USB or BT, it can't act as a wifi adapter... The WMWifiRouter uses the ICS, but with different settings, that can't be utilized manualy... you can create an Ad-Hoc network with some registry tuning, but that's about it.. no DHCP, no NAT, no WEP, nothing that makes it easy, and secure...
Also I mentioned a version number for WmWifiRouter... the leatest (1.20) supports the Wifi -> USB mode, so with this your PDA can act as a WiFi adapter.
Also these PDAs weren't ment to be used this way, so expect high-level battery drainage, you'll need atleast 2 USB ports to charge it while using WMWiFiRouter.
But you can download the trial from the site, and see for your self... you won't loose anything with trying...

Ok, i got the 1.20 trial on the pda and got it working in Wifi -> usb mode, but now how do i search wireless networks on the pc? i noticed it is detected as wired connection, not a wireless one...
You don't need to quote the previous reply...
The PC sees a wired connection... so? You thought that, you can use the windows Wireless Zero Config for searching? I guess you just found out that you can't...
The wireless connection is managed by your PDA, connect to a wireless network with you PDA after you set up the WiFi -> USB...
gnick is correct, I am actually using my phone at home as a Wifi Adapter with WMWifiRouter 1.25 and it works very well. And YES, you have to connect your Wifi on phone first, then connect phone to computer via USB and (in my case) Windows 7 does the rest... I believe Vista also. Not sure about XP, don't have an XP machine, well I do, but it's off sitting in the closet (in timeout for not behaving good.. hehe)

Internet Sharing, WMWifiRouter. They can't work?, Windows Vista the culprit?

Hello. I am having a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 WM6.1 Device. Recently, I've tried internet sharing via USB and it doesn't seem to work. My idea is to be able to have internet connection on my phone via USB that connects to my main computer that has ADSL connection.
After pressing 'Connect' is successfully connects but any internet usage I've made is via my EDGE connection, not ADSL.
According to Windows Vista Internet Sharing Center, my phone's network access is 'Local only' as apposed to my normal LAN connection which is 'Local and Internet'.
I've searched for a solution and I came to this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 but it still does not work.
Apart from the problem of Internet Sharing, my WMWifiRouter can't seem to work also.
As far as I know, WMWifiRouter will need to have Internet Sharing to work first, so it's normal that it is not working. However, I found a rather interesting message whenever I connect the 'USB to WiFi' mode. A pop up box with the tile 'Pocket PC Networking' will say ' cannot obtain a server assigned ip address. try again later or enter an ip address in network settings'.
Can anyone share with me the proper IP address for WMWifiRouter on my PC and on my WM device?
Anyway, just to describe the problem I'm facing when I'm using WMWifiRouter.
1. I connect 'USB to WiFi', everything seems to work fine, the status is ready.
2. I can see my own network name on my laptop.
3. I click on it, and the message shows connected.
4. Tried to access the internet but it won't work.
So, the main problem now is...
1. There's something wrong with Vista causing any device that wants Internet Sharing to only connect to 'Local'
2. There's something wrong with my IP configuration.
Thank you all very, very much in advance for helping me out.
unless chainfire beats you to it and posts the answer here.. you can PM him
Alright, thank you very much for your suggestion!

Internet via USB from PC ?

This may be obvious to some of you (I hope so) but not to me: when I have my Vox connected via USB to my PC, can it use LAN Internet access ?
It's called Active Sync...
It does, but it's not a very good connection, some programs use it, some don't. You have to check it out!
yeah, we can connect all device (i have hermes, kaiser and vox) all connected to internet through Activesync..i use 4.5 now..
Thanks guys
Does that mean that when my phone is connected to my PC via ActiveSync it will always use the LAN connection and not the dial-up connection of my telecom provider? For all programs?
yes. as long as your computer still connected to internet/wifi
Not all programs do this, so take care! Best is to check with radio disabled first.
