Hi all
Do you switch your HTC Kaiser on first thing in the morning? Are you fed up looking at some naff operator logo. Well, look no further. I've made a custom Splash Image sequence called "Dawn Chorus". It's designed to make you feel that little bit better in the morning. Here goes:
1) Copy "welcomehead.96.png" in "Dawn Chorus.zip" to the \Windows folder on your device. You may need to use a programme like Total Commander PPC.
2) Copy "animated.gif" in "Dawn Chorus.zip" to the "\Windows" folder as above.
3) You MUST have your device HARD SPL'ed. If you don't have Hard SPL installed then don't go any further!
4) Copy KAISIMG.nbh (in Dawn Chorus.zip attached) to the root of your Storage Card.
5) Completely power down your phone using long press power and selecting "Yes".
6) Press and hold the camera button and press the power button. Keep the camera button pressed until you see the tri-colour bootloader screen.
7) When prompted to, press the power button again to start the flash of the new splash screen.
8) Wait for the progress bar to go all the way over. After you have COMPLETED! SUCCESS! or something like that in blue writing on grey background soft-reset the device using the stylus in the hole method.
9) Enjoy your new splash screen and feel better every morning!
10) Delete KAISIMG.nbh from the root of your Storage Card.
Gorgeous
Gorgeous, been some great sunsets over the last few days.
Thanks.
Okay, have to be doing something wrong. Phone goes into bootloader, but no prompt to press power button
What am I doing wrong ? I followed all the steps, copied kaisimg onto my SD, camera power, bootloader, nothing.
hmmm
Well it works for me but never did get the green button holding the power and camera but held it till i got the tricolor screen and waited and restarted and all works ok for me . I have a great sun rise now
Thank you

Hi
Did you place KAISIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card? Is your device security unlocked? If you can't get it to work, try SSPL. I don't know if that will work but it may be worth a try.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply.
Yes , I put it on the root of my SD card. Tried moving it with Total Commander, tried cutting and pasting it on to the SDcard. My phone is security unlocked and flashed with 3.29Hard. For some reason when I put the phone into Bootloader, KAISIMG.nhb just won't run. Is there a way to run it off the desktop?

Don't use SSPL.
SSPL is for flashing the SPL (Bootloader) on the device, nothing more.
@denco, you need a FAT32 formatted card, and sometimes some card's just don't work. Just flash it with the RUU.

Sorry i Dave was in the background... "great minds think alike"
Replace existing ROM/Radio image file in update package.

Hi denco7
Yes, take a ROM/Radio update with any update file in and CustomRUU.exe. Rename KAISIMG.nbh to the same as the existng .nbh file in the folder and replace the existing update image file. Then just flash from desktop as usual.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
Not sure if it's called "KAISIMG.nhb" on your device or was just a typo, but it's "KAISIMG.nBH, not "KAISIMG.nHB."
thanks for this ^^ normally i only reboot my kaiser if something went wrong
so your great startup screens really help me to calm down
btw. flashing via sd-card doesn't work for me.
renaming to RUU_signed.nbh and flashing using active synced worked fine

FYI: The RUU will flash the first file it finds with an NBH extension in it's directory. No need to re-name, just place the RUU and and NBH in the same directory and it will flash

That was my first thought, that my card wasn't formatted right. Just wanted to make sure running RUU with KAISIMG would be alright.
EDIT: That worked, one question though, is it supposed to be animated ? Either way it is beautiful, thanks for this and the Neon theme, which I use all the time.

Hi All,
as many of you, I have converted my Extended_ROM to a bigger Storage folder. Unfortunately I still need most of the software packages that were included into the Extended_ROM. I was looking for an AUTORUN.EXE that could allow me to place my CABs into the \Storage folder and install them after a Hard-Reset. No need to say I didn't find anything that fully complied with my expectations. The only useful thing I found was an autorun.exe that executed from the 'Storage Card'. A quick modification with an Hex Editor led me to the solution. I thought it was time now for me to pay my dues with this forum that has helped me so many times in the past. So here is the file !
Instructions are dummy proof !
Compress all your CABs (Extended ROM and/or other software packages) into a ZIP file (not RAR!) and name it 'ExtendedROM.zip'
Create an Hidden/Read Only folder called 2577 on the root of \Storage.
Copy the ZIP and the Autorun.exe files into that folder.
Hard Reset and watch at you Magician installing all the Cabs for you.
Enjoy !
Silver Bullet
I have just tried your method and it works!
Thank you very much indeed.
I consider this to be the best companion to the BigStorage. I zipped 14 cab files into a 8.6M zip file. I would save this as backup in my storage card. Next time, after a ROM upgrade, I can simply copy these back to Storage to have a clean and quick installation of the essential files.
By the way, the old trick of skipping the auto installation still works (i.e. soft reset immediately before autorun starts).
Moderator: I would very much recommend to make this a sticky, please.
hi there,
After I read almost all BIGSTORAGE postings here. I feel confident about do it. So few days ago I prepared myself to upgrade my O2mini. When I press "power-on" button + "camera" button + "soft-reset" hole with stylus... my O2mini got hard-reset
What I did wrong? You guidance is much appreciated. Thanks.[/quote]
You must have missed to press the camera button, just do it again, you should get it into bootloader mode.

Thanks itplanet. I will give it a try again.
Oh! One last thing i forgot to mention:
please ensure that the CABs you are ZIPping are not flagged as READ-ONLY.
Autorun.exe unzips the ExtendedROM.zip file into your PDA memory.
If the content has been stored with the Read only flag set, the cabs will not be deleted just after they've been installed, thus wasting your valuable memory.
Ciao!

Well here I am stupified. I updated the ROM to a WM6 the phone works well with one exception USB and Blue tooth connections will not work. I am struggling with an sd card update ( to reinstall another rom) , but have failed so far. Any suggestions as to how to have my phone talk to th epc again. I can use the sd to get files back and forth. Obviously I am a novice.Txs
AT&T 8525 aka hermes,tyten etc,
What phone do you have?
Duuh, should have mentioned that
ATT&T 8525 aka hermes tyten etc
Are you using XP or Vista to do the upgrade?
In case you have a preproduction HERMES and you can not update the ROM (due to the fact that your bootloader is <1.04) here the very easy solution:
- format a SD card with FAT32
- extract the .NBH file from the rom image you like
- rename the .NBH to HERMIMG.NBH and copy it to your SD card
- put SD card in phone and start it in bootloader (hold OK button on left side and POWER button at same time and stick with stylus in RESET on bottom)
- confirm flashing on screen
- flashing might hang after some time but this is normal. Just wait. Complete flash takes about 30 minutes.
This also works for normal (non preproduction) devices but keep in mind that if the CID does not match the flashing might not work.
John
P.S. Same applies to other devices: BREEIMG.NBH, STARIMG.NBH, ...
(i didn't write this)
have a vista x 64 and a xp laptop

- extract the .NBH file from the rom image you like
can do, but only receive
splash.nb os.nb and sub splash file
- rename the .NBH to HERMIMG.NBH and copy it to your SD card
where is the .nbh file coming from? is this the org rom download?
what do I miss?
BTW Thanks for all the help

Just go to the Hermes forums and look for a rom that you like over there and download the package. More than likely, the zip/rar file will have the upgrading tools as well as a file called nk.nbh. This is your rom. Just do as nir36 said and you should be fine.
Good luck!

Before I did anything I used

from olipro to hardspl my herm
I then succesfully uploaded a vanilla 2d from josh. As the phone went dead( nirvana) a couple of timnes i tried to use a different rom
which i could upload, afterwards though the phone works but no bluetooth or usb connection hence no contact to activity sys and no restoring of my contacts.
Am i bricked or what is it. Can I somehowe eras all info and start from scratch?
MAin concern is I cannot get my huge contact list back in the phone
I have finaly got it to work fyi if someone needs it
I botted into the bootmaster connected to my computer and installed via "olliinstaller" a new rom told the softawre to ignore and safe hard boot.
It worked .

Ok i downgraded my phone from rc30 to rc29 and now it won't enter the recovery mode. All it does is restart everytime and when i do a factory reset it doesn't reset anything. Can anyone help me please.

I have done this before. Rooting i mean but the problem is that i have already downgraded to the rc29 but i just can't enter the recovery mode. I have factory resetted and i have tried to flash the recovery image again but not works. The phone is at rc29 and i did the telnet commands but i just cannot get the phone into recovery mode. It doesn't allow it. Is there is a way to reset it to rc30 so i can try again?
brick
There's already a brick thread with helpful tips
bricked g1s are like unicorns they don't exsist when you flash the phone
Try searching for "brick thread" using search function
brick
Also if the phone loads up it's not bricked and the recovery function is there it comes preloaded with rc29 just reflash rc29
Bootloader wont read the rc29
I put the rc29 file on my sdcard and entered bootloader by pressing camera and power button but when it enters the menu it says there is no img file present. I know that it is the right file and i have placed in the correct place. And i have not changed the file name.

make sure you unzip the file, then place the .nbh extension on the sd.
brick
Reformat your sdcard it might say it's fat32 but might be corupted. It can't find the file is cause the filesystem is corupted or the rc29 img did not transfer correctly
Thank you so much
Thanks alot. That is the step i missed. I'm such an idiot. Thank u again. Now my girlfriend won't kill me for messing up her phone.

You're absolutely sure it's named dreaimg.nbh, NOT dreaMimg.nbh and it's in the root directory of the SD card not a subdirectory and you downloaded the ENTIRE file (download didn't crap out prematurely?
The step i missed
No wat happened is that i didn't unzip the rc29 file and i put the whole folder on the sdcard and then i tried to run it in bootloader. That where i was messing. Thank u guys very much for your help i really appreciate it.

Kittipong, when you flash to NAND you actually don't have any system, only a kernel that allows to boot from it. You have to install Android after this step.

*updated 2/2/2011*
First, props to silentstryder for putting up the process. I'm just giving it it's own thread for the newbies, users with the new hboots (2.02 and 2.10) and for people who just plain don't like command prompt. Also, HUGE thanks to Stoney 666 for giving me the software to convert images to .rgb565 and to CYBERxNUKE for creating it.
*Note*
all filenames in this process are case sensitive. Don't capitalize it if it's not capitalized and don't lower case it if it's not lowercase. Also, do not add extensions unless you're instructed to. Doing any of these can mess up the process.
**UPDATE 10/1/11**
Updated a working PC36IMG.zip (in the attachments in the bottom). The last one was corrupt and the Unrevoked website goes down sometimes.
**UPDATE 10/24/11**
Added up a pro tip for people who want to make their own Splash screens and not just make their own Splash PC36IMG.zip.
Okay, rewriting this process from scratch because, well it's easier that way.
PART 1 (if you downloaded a splash screen image from the Themes and Apps Section of the Evo forums in XDA, the proceed directly to PART 2).
1. Download the EVOSplash Zip from the attachments.
2. Open the howto.txt file inside for instructions on how to use it. With this program, you can convert a file into the required .rgb565 file.
3. Rename the converted .rgb565 file splash1.img
PART 2 (if you have your file all ready to go)
*note* if you have not done so, rename the splash picture to splash1.img
1. Go to this website: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
2. Download the original PC36IMG.zip file (it's close to the bottom)
3. Use a .zip editor (winzip, 7zip, etc) to open it.
*ehem* DO NOT EXTRACT, JUST OPEN
4. Replace the splash1.img in the zip with the one you have/just made. Save it.
5. Plug your phone in, connect to PC via disk drive.
6. Put the PC36IMG onto the root of your SD card (for newbies, that's the very first page of the SD card).
7. Reboot phone into bootloader (turn off, volume down + power)
8. The phone should recognize the zip and ask if you want to update. Select yes (I believe it's volume up for yes).
The zip will install and you're new splash screen should be there next time the phone reboots.
I hope this helps a lot and thanks to everyone who's read it and been patient. It took me a month to thread jumping before I found a process that worked with hboot 2.02 and 2.10 (I have 2.10). This is also the easiest way for people who are uncomfortable with adb and the command prompt.
Give me a thanks if it helped, I do this for free so I don't accept donations
**PRO TIP**
If you want it to fit the whole screen (or to make your own from scratch), use a photo or paint like program (Photoshop, etc). Make a new file that is 480 pixels wide and 800 pixels for height. Then re-size the picture you want to use in it (another tip: use a picture that is bigger than 480x800. If it's smaller, it'll get fuzzy and become lower quality) to fit the borders of the new file. Alternatively, you can make your own. Save as JPEG when you're done, then follow the instructions above.
Followed the process, it's not working for me. I don't get a prompt to update in hboot. PC36IMG.zip is on the root of my SD card. =/
EDIT: When I boot back into CM6 and look at the root of my SD card the .zip is gone...
EDIT2: Diagnosed and fixed, had to make the PC36IMG.zip rwx-rwx-rwx. Flashed just fine!
what about users with hboot 0.93.0000?

Okay here we go. This process is to install custom splash screens without having to use the command prompt or fastboot. Users who have hboot 2.02 and 2.10 CANNOT use the command prompt anyway so this is the workaround for those people.
1. Download the PC36IMG.zip from the attachments.
2. Find the splash screen you want and rename it splash1.img (don't worry about any warnings about it not being usable, Android is smarter than Windows).
3. Open the .zip and delete the splash1.img that's already there and replace it with the one you downloaded.
4. Plug your phone in, select "disk drive".
5. Move the .zip file into the first page (or root page) of your sd card.
6. Remount sd card (not necessarily important, but recommended).
7. Power Down
8. Load into Hboot (volume down + power)
9. Hboot will recognize the .zip as an update and will ask if you want to install it, hit volume up to install.
10. Reboot and enjoy your new splash screen.
If this gets a sticky, so be it, if not, I am going to PM the OP of the sticky'd thread with all the splash screens and ask him if he'd put this guide in there.
I hope this helps some people, it sure helped me.

This is compatible with all hboots. It's just that people with the two newest ones can't use any other method (to my knowledge) except this one so I thought it was guide worthy. Most of the threads that have splash screens have alternate instructions.

people still need this, I wish I could get it sticky'd
problem installing splash screen
I am having the same problem as above, I have read alot on this fourm and still cannot get a different splash screen up. Im looking to install the stock flash for the evo. I'm getting an error no image found please help.
Thanks...
I found
a flashable zip of the stock splash screen, and it worked, but I would still like to know how to do this. I wanted to put on the red evo skelton giving the finger.

When you add the image to the Evo, make sure it's in it's native resolution (my instructions only cover splash screens from this forum, which is 800x480).
For further info, read Stoney 666's post, that's how you do it if your image doesn't start in the right file type.
Thanks.
Got it to work, not sure how, i think i used a different PC36IMG file, or I took zip off the ending.

Even if you take off the .zip it's still a zip so one way or the other it works I just uploaded the PC36IMG file I found on the Unrevoked website.
Glad you got it to work!
Ok, I'm not doing something right. I downloaded the PC36IMG.zip, opened it, replaced the file with the splash screen I wanted, and re-zipped the file. Put it on the root of my sd card, and started it in bootloader. First, it didn't prompt me to update, although when it checked the sd card for updates, I did note that it said "parsing PC36IMG.zip", but then returned to the menu. I tried flashing it from recovery as well and it didn't work.
From all the stuff I've read this seems to be the method that makes the most sense and is easiest. I've tried flashing it via ABD and a whole bunch of other stuff to no avail; my computer must not like my phone.
What am I doing wrong, I followed your steps...
EDIT: I rooted phone with unrevoked...don't know if that is why. I know that has been a roadblock with some of the other methods of changing the splash screen.
Any possible way to get this turned into a flashable zip file? Im not good with adb!

For 1 you don't have to unzip and re-zip. Just replace the image that's already in the zip. I think a couple of people have had this problem before. I'd try again without re-zipping the package.
Also, if you didn't get the splash screen from this section of the forums (i.e. you're using your own or from a different phone in xda), go to post #4 (on the first page) and read stoney 666's post about converting the file to .rgb565 and then renaming it (not convert, rename) it to splash1.img (yes, with the file extension).
Basically, from where you are, here's what I'd do:
attempt to just replace the splash1.img file in the zip without unzipping and try again. Or, try downloading the original, untainted one here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
and follow the steps over again.
if that doesn't work:
follow stoney 666's instructions and convert the image to .rgb565 format and then rename it to splash1.img.
That should do it.
I will also post that link in the OP and tell people to get the original instead of using mine as people have been having trouble with it.

I revised the instructions on the original post, it should work for you. It's not flashable in recovery, but it's flashable in bootloader which is just as good (don't need clockwork or ra recovery to do it).
I tried it again adding the file to the zip instead of unzipping, rezipping, and no dice. I'll download the PC36IMG file from unrevoke's website and see if that works.
EDIT: I just downloaded the one from unrevoked's website, and I noticed the image file it has in there by default is "splash1.img". The name of the file I am inserting is "evosplash1.rgb565". That is the correct file name, right?
Also, I just tried it with the file from unrevoked's website, still no luck. It just says "parsing PC36IMG" but doesn't do anything and returns to the bootloader options...
Ok, so I finally got it figured out, thanks to moseso. Apparently, it was because the name of the file was wrong. As I understood it, the file was to be named evosplash1.rgb565 . But I had to rename it to splash1.img . I guess it was a misunderstanding on my part, idk. But I got it now. Here is the link to the thread if anyone wants or needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11113102#post11113102

It says in the OP to rename the file and always has.
Glad you got it figured out.

First, props to silentstryder for putting up the process. I'm just giving it it's own thread for the newbies, users with the new hboots (2.02 and 2.10) and for people who just plain don't like command prompt. Also, HUGE thanks to Stoney 666 for providing the software to convert images to .rgb565.
*Note*
all filenames in this process are case sensitive. Don't capitalize it if it's not capitalized and don't lower case it if it's not lowercase. Also, do not add extensions unless you're instructed to. Doing any of these can mess up the process.
Give me a thanks if it helped, I do this for free so I don't accept donations

maybe a really stupid question, as i can be known for those but i can be a worry wart. im using miui 1.8.5 on tiamat-evo 4.0.6 w/ sbc, and im just curious, is reflashing the stock pc36img.zip (after my file replacement, ofc) going to change ANYTHING else on my phone? been having a hell of a time keeping it running lately and i WANT to do this, but now im leery of EVERYTHING...
