Radio Problem on RC33 - G1 Android Development

Well I flashed from JF ADP1.1h to JF RC33 to get paid apps (IT WORKS!!!) but now I have a major problem that isn't even worth paid apps to me. For whatever the reason, now whenever I make or receive a call, not matter what number it's from, I get a message that says the phone app force closed and even though I can continue to hear the conversation perfectly in the background it locks up and I can do nothing. But wait, it gets better... After I click force close then the radio shuts off and it goes into airplane mode until I go into settings and un-check the airplane mode option. Weirder though is how the statusbar signal icon just shows the no signal icon and not the airplane mode icon. What is the problem? I'm on AT&T on a real Dev Phone. Do I need to wipe? I really don't want to but if I absolutely have to I guess I can... Thanks for all your help!

I had the same issue on the same path (holiday to RC33). I just ended up wiping the phone and it recovered fine. I assume there is some setting in the user data that is incompatible with 33 that it doesn't like. I suppose you could try to find and remove the data that is causing it; I looked into attempting to wipe its specific sql table(s) but didn't know the first place to start.

the same happens to me (still). it happened more when i updated to the rc33 radio.
tried to do a wipe as most suggested. but to no avail. now it even happens when i
get a text message while using the phone. i've just decided to deal with it for now.

try this radio
i recently discoverred that a few of the radios for the Kaiser in the "ultimate radio thread" under Kaiser ROM Developement work on this phone. specifically 1.71.09.01 i use that radio on my phone and i get much better service and i also download twice as fast as before. if you want to flash the radio to your phone all you need to do is the following:
1. go find that thread and click the download mirror to get the radio in .zip format
2. extract the files to any directory
3. open the .nbh file in a hex editing program of your choice
4. do not edit the file but rather save it as "radio.img"
5. download the radio update.zip from JesusFreke in his thread
6. drag and drop the radio.img that you created into the update.zip
7. sign the update.zip and place it on your SD card
8. flash it to your phone
i would upload my update.zip but as i am using the G1 as a tether right now it takes too long and i am impatient. also i'm sure you can just flash the .nbh file after naming it to DREAIMG.nbh but i have not tried that. good luck to you all

Do you think that flashing the radio the kaiser one would start roaming outside of tmobile network for calls and data? Is tmo going to charge for roaming ?
Thanks

Any way we (I) could get you to upload the update.zip when yer not tethering lol?

yeah i'll probably go to burgerking in a bit and steal their wifi to upload this to my 4shared and to xda
here is my 4shared link to the file, you just need to rename to update.zip
http://www.4shared.com/file/90746312/7608bece/1710901.html?dirPwdVerified=1125b7c0
it seems to be too big to upload to xda

I applied the update.zip and went through the motions and let it flash and then checked the version and it's still the one from JF1.43 version 1.22.14.11 baseband.
So, I tried it again and same thing. I didn't see it say anything about the image not being valid. It looked like it applied it but appears that it didn't.

Same problem here...force close when in call and receive another call or text message. I applied the above update and still have the force close. Thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure what happened, when I looked at my setting I see the same radio, but when I flash the rc33 update and run 5 speedtests I consistently get between 40kb/s and 104kb/s when I flash my update it get between 90 and 200 consistently, I would think that means I have a better radio, I am not moving from my spot and the phone sites in the same place for all the tests. Hopfully I can figure this out and help you guys with your problems

Well for me a wipe seems to fix it. I just got over losing the texts. They were sentimental but I cleared it anyway. So my advice either use MyBackup or just get over it and wipe lol

Well, I've tried the radio change and two subsequent wipes and I still have the force closses. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

Installing the zip file worked for me, in that I don't get force closes, but no 3G on AT&T at all, unless 3G in this area is 80-160kbps...

Sorry but you won't get AT&T's 3G on your phone... the G1 or ADP1 will not work on AT&T's 3G.
I heard that the only theoretical way to fix this would be to replace a chip on the inside, but this would require you MAJORLY hardware hack your G1.

What is a good speed test to use? I have been going to my3gspeed.com and am getting 2.5mbps (320kBps) for download speed rather consistently. Here I thought my connection was slow...
Upload is 224kbps (28kBps)
I'm just wondering how accurate the test is because browsing web pages does not seem that fast...

T-Mobile MDA problems

T-Mobile branded MDA. Reflashed to a Windows Mobile 6 version by "mfrazzz"
1. Battery life. TERRIBLE. I think it might be the phone. Got two other batteries. One lasts about as long as the original one I had and the other last just a little longer. Have yet to try a 100% new battery yet. In about 5 hours off the chrager with maybe a phone call and a few texts, it will drop to about 70%. Any ideas?
2. My MMS does not work. I know its from when I switched it over to WinMo6 and all the "fields" are empty for the settings. Customer Care wouldn't help me so does anyone on here have the required information I need to put it?
3. My LAN does not work. Possibly another thing from doing the WinMo6 deal. When I go to the Comm Manager and click LAN, the little windows loading icon comes up and goes off with the LAN not turning on.
in regard to the MMS not working, run the cab i attached. after that i reccomend going into the MMS settings/servers and then selecting the T-Mobile MMS connection, go in there (you'll see server name and such) and go to the bottom and change "Connect Via" from T-Mobile MMS to T-Mobile Data. that works well for me. keep that cab handy for future use as well.

which version of mfrazzz's xda series are you using? i believe the wireless issue was fixed with later versions.

i charge mine everyday... that was the same with wm5, but i can get almost two days of some phone and lots of email if i have to (gets down to about 10%). i dont think ive seen any pocketpcs that can make it much past two days with normal use... but it should not drop quite that fast -> one thing to try is go down to the 2.19 radio and look around for the power saving cabs (for some network connections and memory card) that are also built in to the later roms. both together make a big difference. also put your screen brightness to the lower setting, thats what really sucks the power.
if you like the xda roms, try going to xda 5. or try any of the other popular roms, nothin's pandora, antc wiz 2.0, theloon's kitchen for a custom, boring 1622, any TNT rom, whiterat's WRCX, etc... keep trying em out
i advise you to flash to an official rom first to get rid of any corrupt registries.once you do that....flash your favorite rom and after flashing HARD RESET....i do this to be on the safe side....

you may want to do a search for "clean extended rom". when u flash back to an official rom, they generally have an extended rom...upgrading to a cooked rom usually doesn't upgrade the extended rom...has been known to sometimes cause battery drain issues.

if you want to do the ext rom, 2.19 radio, and ipl/spl 3.08 (might as well, its like a computer's bios) here is all three at once
2.19.11_3.08_WM6Splash_BlankExt.rar
update with this last after going back to tmo and flashing to any custom wm6 rom. after flashing with the wm6, don't worry about the setup, just go straight to the all in one, then do setup after.
Whew, should have know I'd get replies that look like hyroglyphics...LOL! I will have to do some reading to fully understand everything you guys are talking about haha. dummy version of all that possibly?
On the battery life. My screen brightness is in the middle. My other MDA would last over a full day. Heck, I left it off the charger one night without one message or call and it dropped 1%. Now, I can do that and within 2 hours it will drop like 8%

hey we all learned it at some point
radio is the raw code that drives the "radio" in your Wizard. it tells it how to search for a signal, what to lock on to, how to switch between voice and data, all the code that is need for the basic phone part of the PDA to work.
the extended rom is usually used by carriers (att, tmo, etc...) to install their custom software for the branded device, i.e. wizard becomes mda or 8125. after first starting the phone, a file called autorun.exe starts loading extra programs that are added on to the base operating system. it also starts loading the CAB files from the extended ROM, 10MB worth in the case of the wizard. these are things like MyFaves, the connection settings for data on the TMO or ATT networks, the setup my email link, etc...
hope that helps...
Not to take away from anyone else's work, but I flashed the T-Mobile Boring ROM, and haven't had a hitch, once I got all the internet setting right. I also am running the 2.71 GSM, and I can honestly say my mda runs better now than it did when it was new. Battery life improved, too. I am also a noob, and tried a couple others before I flashed this one...this worked best for me, since I didn't want to do all the tweaking (yet ) that more advanced users on this board know to do automatically.

THANKS! Good to know the n00bs don't get flamed too bad here
Ok my IPL/SPL right now on my G3 device is 2.26. If I want the 3.08 can I go right to it or do I need to go down to the 1.05? To go from the XM6r3 to XM6r5 what do I need to do? Should I just be able to go straight to that? It already CID unlocked and stuff for the current version I am on. Just confused on how to go from what I have now to the new one.
Thanks in advance!
Please Help
Ughh. Just went to XM6r5 and I have the same exact problems.....
Battery life still terrible. When I was done reflashing I was at 97% and after going through the settings without one phone call or text its already at 87%
The WLAN is still not working. Go to the Comm. Manager, click on WLAN, the windows loading icon comes up like its going to turn on, the windows loading icon goes off and the WLAN never turns on.
MMS messaging still says "error syncronizing"
Still on the 2.26 ROM
BUMP. Battery went down 6% in 10 minutes.... Is there a way I can just get back to WM5?
Oops, double post.

problem with rooted phone

Ok so I rooted my phone and put hard spl and jf rc33. Now almost everytime I make or receive a call, once the call has ended, the phone process force closes. its not that big a deal, except that my phone drops connection and has to establish network connection all over again once it force closes. Did I miss a step? What can I check? Is it the wifi tether program I installed? Auto rotate? Any input at all is greatly appreciated. Btw thanks to jf and everyone else on here for helping me do all this awesome stuff with my phone
it's something of a common occurance. i haven't seen a concrete solution to resolve the problem. some will suggest doing a wipe. but mine still continues to do so. more when i'm getting a text message while on the phone.
It happened to me last night; all I did was reflash JF RC33 (whatever version you have) and it went back to normal.

Odd GPS issues

OK, so I've dug around the forums and have yet to really find anyone who had a similar issue and wasn't able to fix it with either FasterFix or GPSStatus so thought I'd start a new thread. If anyone knows this answer and knows it's in another thread then let me know and I'll shut this one down...
Anyways, the issue in a nutshell is that Maps refuses to work without "Wireless Networks" being checked (it throws up an error that tells me to turn on My Locations or to turn on either "Wireless Networks" or "GPS satellites" even though GPS sats is checked in the settings) and even then the accuracy is horrible (on tower-based, which is more or less to be expected since it's a triangulation, I believe), Navigation/Locations will both get a location but it appears to be "Wireless Network" based, GPSStatus shows a max of only 3/3 sats even outside on a clear day but no other app sees those even those 3 sats. I basically think my GPS chip is locked up. (Is that even possible?)
The GPS issues started one night on CoreDroid's V5.0 after working for quite some time on CD's various builds, including working on 5.0, so I flashed up to 5.1 and still no-go. Wiped everything, reflashed 5.1 and still nothing. Moved over to RCMixHD 5.9 and it still acts up. It used to be that I could uncheck "Wireless Networks" and it would just bounce off of the GPS sats but now nothing seems to see the chip. I've wiped everything, reflashed numerous times, flashed a new radio (the latest Mar leaked GB radio), gone inside, outside, around the house, around the town, etc etc etc, cleared the Maps cache, uninstalled/reinstalled Maps, reinstalled Locations several times, reset the GPS state with GPS Status, redownloaded the GPS data w/ GPS Status, changed out the gps.spade.so file in CoreDroid 5.0/1 with one from the Inspire Dev Forum (I think, may have been General) that modded files based off of FasterFix files that were supposed to fix the GPS if FasterFix doesnt (the files worked for a whole one test...then everything quit working right again) and I've reset the NTP to North America's server via FasterFix and STILL nothing. I'm getting rather frustrated at this point and any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
How about flashing back to stock Rom?
Sent from my calculator
What would the advantage be? I mean I've already flashed different ROMs and gotten the same issue so part of me doesn't care to flash another couple of times but another part of me wonders why it'd help any since it's just going to be overwritten when I flash back to RC or any other custom. Will flashing to stock somehow reset the GPS. I know flashing to stock is generally one of the first suggestions but I've always wondered how it actually helps. Guess I'm off to hunt down the stock on my computer while I wonder lol...thanks
Did you use RUU to get back to stock Rom and radio? RUU does more than just flash the Rom. It flashes the radio to stock. Only reason I'm saying this is cause someone else had Gps issues and when they went to stock unrooted, everything worked as it should.
Sent from my calculator
Do a forum search for inspire RUU. Should come up.

Awesome, thanks. I was unaware that the Inspire had an RUU. Well, most RUU's I've run across have been packaged into a program like ODIN but I think I can do the RUU manually via ADB. Hopefully they have a program out, though. Think all my stock stuff has been done via ADB and the Hack Kit so I'll dig around for an all-in-one program. Thanks!
Sadness...no such luck even on RUU stock.
Just curious, what method did you use to do this?
Is this the same one you used?

I have been having similar GPS issues on my stock Inspire. After a long HTC customer service call, I was advised to do a factory reset on the phone. Voila, the problem appears to be solved. I now get 8 or 9 satellites and lock in about 30 seconds. Also, after this reset, my battery life is much better. So, I am not sure what bug I eliminated in the factory reset, but I accomplished something. What would affect both battery and GPS? I know this is not the same as for a rooted phone, but perhaps there is some connection. By the way, just what SNR do users with solid GPS performance get on GPS Test? I never get SNR over 25 on any satellite, whether indoors or out...
HtcOmega,
I helped another person with an inspire, so maybe it might work for you too, Try the link in my sig and see if replacing the gps.conf with one of mine may help you. It has been very successful so far, it might help with your dilema as well. And if your going to ask whats different about mine then fasterfix app, the answer is alot.
Let me know.

I was having the same issue as HtcOmega and decided check out your link. I must say that my GPS is working as it should now. Takes at most 30 seconds for a lock without the case on. I flashed the north america zip instead of choosing the north east version. Is there any reason why you wanted people to choose their specific region?
Primarily the reason is I broke up the USA into 6 regions and made a script for 62+ individual countries because I am not using the generic ntp servers from the pool, these are ntp servers specifically for that location, and by narrowing down the location and not using a general ntp it should make lock times faster. If you read the thread for the most part quick reading you will see that the NA script is made primarily for people who travel to many places frequently and do not want to keep changing scripts, as well as people in the common wealth countries would use the NA script.
I am currently testing out 1.2 with a handful of beta testers to see if the new script can be a little more consistent, there are new commands in the new script, which is phase one at least for the HD2 since the HD2 is a prt and lacks the support for true agps.

CM7 on D2G - issues with APNs, possibly Rogers specifically?

I'm posting this on the four android-related forums that I participate in, in hopes that someone has seen this before and knows what to do.
Here's what I had:
- Droid 2 Global, unlocked, rooted, with Fission ROM, using Rogers Wireless, a GSM network in Canada
- it had been working just fine for 5 months
Here's what I did:
- Used RSDLite and the SBF loader to flash the stock 2.4.330 firmware as seen here: http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/SBF
- ended up with a bootloop, as the directions said I would. cleared data and cashe, no problem, phone booted.
- started up phone, switched to GSM mode, entered APNs, immediately had data service, tested phone functionality, all was well, used APN backup/restore and APN Manager to make backup files of my APNs
- Used stock recovery mode to upgrade to 4.5.607 (gingerbread) firmware as seen here: http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/4.5.607_Firmware
- I used the file linked to from here: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/08/22/gingerbread-build-for-the-droid2-global-leaks/
- started up phone, switched to GSM mode, entered APNs, immediately had data service, tested phone functionality, all was well, used APN backup/restore and APN Manager to make backup files of my APNs
- rooted phone using the adb method that is out there. rebooted and confirmed root access. installed a couple apps that need root. tested phone functionality, all was well. used APN backup/restore and APN Manager to make backup files of my APNs
- As described here, http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/CyanogenMod Installed Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap and ROM Manager in order to flash CWM. rebooted into CWM, factory reset, installed the latest release (10/06), and rebooted
- started up phone, switched to GSM mode, phone app crashed immediately (as is to be expected, based on known bugs), rebooted for it to take effect
Now here's the problem:
- phone can make calls and receive texts with no problem, but cannot get data. wifi also works.
- went into wireless settings, mobile networks, access point names, nothing shows up. Clicked "add APN". entered the APN info that had worked for me before at the past two junctions. hit menu button, then save. takes me back to the APN screen, but no APN shows up.
- repeated this cycle a few times following reboots, etc. Eventually the phone gets to the point where the "add APN" button will not even come up when the menu key is hit.
- during the above, was also checking the "network operators" setting. The phone does locate all of the networks that are "in the air" but no matter which one I choose it will tell me "your sim card does not allow a connection to this network"
- used root explorer to check /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db. There is a list of about 1500 APNs. There are multiple entries for Rogers including all of the ones I tried to enter that appeared not to save.
- used APN backup/restore and APN manager to attempt deleting existing APNs, restoring the ones that were known to work, etc. Nothing works. These programs do work, and when I check the telephony.db file I can see what they have done to the file, but they are unfortnately unable to make any APN "stick" at the APN screen, and apparently that is the only way that it will work.
more info:
- I've noticed that the list of rogers entries seems to get larger and larger as I go through this process multiple times. I may be wrong, but it seems that this telephony.db file might not actually get changed or updated when you flash a new kernel/firmware/mod/rom to the phone.
- I'm sure that the lack of a list of APNs and the "sim card does not allow connection" message are related. For whatever reason there seems to be a bug in CM7 where the telephony.db file has problems "talking" to the APN screen in settings. But it must not affect most people.
- yes, I have tried a new SIM card.
- yes, I have tried clearing cache, data, dalvik, and fixing permissions.
- Anyone else on Rogers Running CM7 on a D2G? If so, I'd love to talk to you. Maybe I could convince you to send me a working CWM backup. I imagine that if you're a conscientious rommer, you have a backup made folling a fresh install of CM7.
I used to do at one point. The froyo base 2011.08.13 version was the last one that worked for me. Newer ones boot looped if SIM card is inside, no matter what I do. I stopped trying after couple further releases all of which boot looped. Essentially quit using CM4D2G due to bluetooth not working with BT handsfree. Later, after the official Motorola GB release came, I have not even looked back. Since I like few BLUR features, especially dialler, the GB Motorola released suits me very well. With the doubled battery life and the MUCH BETTER GSM radio in 606/607 bulds, phone finally settled down and I can now rely on it.
I have CM7 on another of my phones - actually 2 of them - a Milestone and (recently) a HTC Vision - I love CM7.1 especially on the latter!
I assume your phone works fine with stock rom - right?
Edit: I have a XT860 which is in for repairs - once I get it back and I have a reliable daily phone I plan to experiment with the new GB based CM4D2G. Hopefully this week...

I have CM7 on another of my phones - actually 2 of them - a Milestone and (recently) a HTC Vision - I love CM7.1 especially on the latter!
I assume your phone works fine with stock rom - right?

Yes, everything works really well with stock rom. I was quite impressed, as it was my first GB experience. Unfortunately, as with cars, I am all about the "options", and I can't seem to let go of a feature once I have experienced it. I love CM7 and I really want to make it work for my D2G.
I posted this same thing at the rootzwiki thread, and one of the head developers said "You my friend may finally have identified where the gsm data issues are coming from. it isnt just you, it's 98% of the gsm users that arent having data". Another user got me to change a couple of permissions. I thought he was onto something but it didn't work, either. Nonetheless, I think I brought enough attention to this issue and also gave them something to work with through all my trial and error. I am optimistic.
But, for now, I think I have to take CM7. I want my data! I am really tempted to just give stock GB a shot. But Blur scares me. Most people don't seem to like it, though I admit I don't fully understand what Blur is! I see there is MIUI and apex, angel Hexen and VenusX. I might have to try them first.
hallo!
had exactly the same problem! i bought a verizon phone an using it in greece!
But i simply dowloaded some APNs manager from the market and within 2 minutes my phone was connecting to the internet!! So if this worked for me i`m sure its gonna work for u too!!

Can you be more specific as to what you did? Because it sounds exactly like something I tried already. What was the exact name of the software you used? Was your problem 100% exactly the same as mine, or just similar? I literally can't make an APN show up at the APN screen at all.

Some people have this exact problem with the D3, looks like in the D3 placing the phone in airplane mode and then on again is enough to make the APN manager able to read the MCC/MNC codes and, consequently, to store the provided apn.
I wish it was that easy, but it's not. I have tried a number of solutions similar to that but no dice. I appreciate the attempt though.

For the record I have that problem on the D2g flashed with the latest builds of cyanogen rom, (with the same SIMs perfectly working on D3 and D2g with the stock rom), and the airplane mode trick doesn't works too.
So far I haven't found a solution
To get my wife's d2g to work in japan I had to use root explorer to manually edit a file. The file is located at etc/ppp/peers/pppd-ril.options mount the file rw and manually edit the user name and password to match your apn. Toggle airplane mode on off after saving changes and it should work.

Thanks, i guessed that if a proper fix may be hard to find, a workaround was easy enough, I'll try it later with the gingerbread froyo.

sounds interesting. I will give that a try the next time I flash CM7. I moved on to Apex. It's ok, but absolutely dreadful for battery life. I can't imagine CM7 is any better considering it has about 50 more bells and 125 more whistles. But I do prefer CM7 to anything else so as soon as I actually have some tweaking time again, I'll give this a shot.
Since both CM7 and Apex are built off the same firmware, I could just flash them overtop eachother, and wipe date and cache, right? As long as it's that easy, I could see myself trying this sooner.

[Q] XT720 stock from WIND + Wifi/3G issues

Ok noob alert..just a prelude I've done alot of searching and reading, and *think I have some answers, but if some kind soul were to take a quick look and maybe verify what I've found, I'd be eternally grateful. I used to have a LG Optimus and easily rooted/upgraded to CM7 by reading this forum and didn't have to ask any questions.
Now I've gone and signed up for WIND (Canada) and picked up an XT720. It's my budget and I'm not overly concerned about whether or not I have ICS immediately. I'd rather have something stable and $$ saving.
OK so I'm noticing a serious difference in the way the XT720 handles the WIFI/mobile data situation compared to the LG: it doesn't. First off, there's no easy way to turn off mobile data. Secondly, enabling WIFI gets me a connection to my router, yes, but browsers and apps that require a connection just refuse to use the WIFI unless: 1. there is 3G data connection - in other words, it ain't using WIFI 2. I put the phone in Airplane Mode, and turn WIFI back on. Great, but now no phone calls or SMS. Not a viable workaround. Option 3 involves hard resetting the phone with a battery pull which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
From scouring around various sites, this seems to have been a common problem with 2.1 and this model of phone. And thus the workarounds I tried were also employed by others.
From what I know of all versions custom ROMs etc from 2.2 onward for other models of phones, though, this wasn't an issue, and also in 2.2 and onward you can switch off Mobile Data which will force the WIFI connection if turned on.
So is this something that I will see an improvement on if I install say CM 6.3 onward or whatever? I'll get the ability to turn off mobile data, right? And then there theoretically shouldn't be a conflict, right?
That's my biggest issue. I don't get enough 3G signal in my house to just use the mobile data connection, I absolutely have to be able to use WIFI and receive phone calls/texts at the same time, so if custom roms aren't going to help me, I'd best return the phone.
Some other things I'm curious about:
- do most of the normal functions of the phone work with CM 6.3? HD recording, camera, HDMI out etc? Anything I've missed?
- I see quite a bit of talk about people running out of RAM and using sd swapping etc is this a common problem? Even with about 20 or so apps and CM7 on my LG Optimus I was still able to maintain about 110 mb RAM free at all times by judicious use of installing apps on SD card...will I be ok?
- Probably the biggest question before I root/install...most of the guides I'm reading talk about installing various stock sbfs etc etc...I'm coming in from a WIND stock rom so I don't *THINK* I need to do this, right? I should be nandroid'ing, Open Recovery, flash custom rom....right?
Here's my specs
Xt720 Wind Canada
s/w STR_U2_05.1F.2
f/w 2.1-update1
f/w config GAS_NA_NAWIND_P012
Baseband 3GSMEPU91A_U_91.075EI
kernel 2.6.29-omap1
I realize that some of this is covered in other threads. To be honest tho some respondents/contributors aren't English first language and I just want to make sure I haven't misunderstood anything. Anyone who has done similar to what I'm trying to do, especially coming from a WIND perspective, lemme know your thoughts, please and thanks alot!

I've picked up the XT720 myself from Wind a few days ago at the clearance price ($150 outright, no plan). They even told me there are no guarantees with the phone with its stock ROM and seemed glad to hear that I was gonna use it with a custom ROM. I knew what I was getting into and the only reason I still bought the phone is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300246
We are extremely lucky to get Gingearbread on our phones, so don't even think of ICS at this moment. As you noticed already the stock 2.1 is useless and I flashed mine the 1st day.

The ROM I linked above (the only 2.3, actually CM 7.1 available for XT720) works as you'd expect with wifi and 3g, that is it uses wifi when connected to both. Any decent ROM will do that.

HD recording - not yet (you don't lose much anyway, the camcorder quality would be crappy, check reviews with the stock OS)
camera - yes (pretty good quality)
HDMI - not yet (I'm guessing it will be fixed very soon, the devs are working on exactly this)
everything else - yes

This one is tricky, the phone only has about 225mb usable RAM, there's not much multi-tasking you can do with that amount but it's workable. There are some performance tweaks you can do (overclocking, CM settings, V6 SuperCharger, etc.) to make it decent. Moving apps on sd card is a good idea in order to save storage space on the phone (another limited resource at only 174mb) but has nothing to do with RAM.

I've been wondering the same thing, what's up with all the SBFs people are talking about left and right? The answer is don't worry about them, you don't need any SBF. They are just that, stock ROMs, all 2.1. You would only need one (the Wind version) if you wanted to take the phone back for servicing and wanted to return to the original non-rooted state. Apparently even if you take a full nandroid backup with your stock ROM now and restore it later, the phone will still be rooted and this is where a stock SBF would help. I'm not gonna bother, even if I do take it back (highly doubt it, with the custom ROM it's a very good phone for $150 outright), I'm just gonna restore my stock nandroid backup.
So what you need is:
1. root the phone (personally I used SuperOneClick, google for the latest version)
2. install OpenRecovery: http://modmymobile.com/forums/563-m.../531599-open-recovery-v1-46-11-21-2010-a.html
I can send you the file you need if you pm your email address. I HATE it when I have to register on some forum just to get 1 stupid file. And you absolutely CANNOT get that stupid file anywhere else on the face of the Earth/internet.
3. install this mod for OpenRecovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242259
4. go to the ROM's thread, dl the latest build linked in the 1st post, copy the zip file to your sdcard\openrecovery\updates, reboot into recovery mode, apply update, format data&cache, reboot. Done. Enjoy!

There's an OpenRecovery apk floating around here to install ther OR bootstrap, no need to register at ModMyMobile.
:Edit:
Woodrube has it attached to this thread. Install the apk from the sdcard, reboot, then run the apk & install OR. (Now you can switch out the OR files with Mioze's modded OR)
here you go
I knew that thread would come in handy one of these days. Plus Buddy and Acro there are other handy APKs in there too.
Mioze actually have all the necessary Open Recovery files linked in his CM6.3 topic
that's the most updated version
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to James and everyone who has responded so far - even going so far as to direct link me to files I'll need? You guys are the best!!.
I really appreciate the encouragement. I think tonight's the night.
I'll try and log my procedures and steps and make note of anything I run into for future noobs like me I might be able to help..that's how community works, right?
Wish me luck!
Good luck
One more tip: If you find that Market keeps crashing after you flash fjfalcon's ROM, flash this updated Google Apps package - gapps-gb-20111216 (dl link here).
It worked for me. Put the zip file on the sdcard right next to the ROM file and flash it just like the ROM file.
PS: Who's James?
Ah BuddyBud sorry, there is another Canadian Wind guy named Biker Bob (real name James) who was posting about his experiences in another thread, and I mixed the two of you up..
About to try this...couple questions
Has anyone watched/used Reverend's tutorial video? Results?
I don't need to unlock the phone first, right? Please tell me no, I just got it! lol
The Revs videos are a good reference & if you are talking about a sim unlock that's not necessary.
Yes Revs videos are good to show.a visual of what you should do. Don't worry about it. I know it is scary the first time but once you do it, it will become second nature. Don't forget to wipe cache, dalvik and factory reset. If you bootloop, that is probably why.
No you don't need to be unlocked. That just deals with carriers and not ROMs.
Im on the edge of the decision precipice..am not too nervous about doing this, as in fact I'm pretty technically proficient..it just seemed that this process was a bit more convoluted than the one I picked up on easily for the LG.
Decisions decisions...6.3 or go all the way to 7.1
I think I need stability...and I'm not sure I want to get into a whole bunch of swapping locations etc. I noticed The Reverend mentioned he didn't bother with swaps. Mind you, I don't even think he made an ext partition either, which boggles my mind, I was almost sure you had to make at least one for any custom ROM. I might be showing just how little I know here! lol
Is it just that 7.1 is more of an ongoing thing, or by now are most of the +/- s of both pretty much on par? I know, I should be reading all 78 pages of the damn thread, right??
Oh boy, I just read through the Bravo thread...and the LED notification sounds SOOO tempting. No LED notification bugged the hell outta me on the LG. Hmmmm...
Ok...have settled on the ROM in this thread (Bravo):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332410
I just want to make sure of one thing...the VERY helpful steps that you all have outlined ie BuddyBuds...they stay the same up to step 4 (ROM + update) no matter what ROM I choose, pretty much.
Brians instructions are just a slight bit confusing in that Im not sure if I have to apply just the most recent update for LED ie v1.6...or if I have to install ALL the updates from the start on up (I think there are 4 of them). To me it would seem logical that each new version would be cumulative ie include the stuff from previous versions...but I just want to make sure!
One more thing..I didnt notice any mention of gapps in the download in that thread (nor did I see a gapps apk in the files I unzipped, but might have missed it..)...if not, Ill need to apply that too, right..any special version to useÉ
Ok so...
I went with Brian's BRAVO. I followed some of the steps provided in this thread, coupled with Reverand's video. I used his OpenRecovery install method (ie original from the Dexter build, copy new over top that) because I've never installed OpenRecovery before and it just seemed confusing on other threads.
To root, I used UltimateAndroot, in order to have the ability to unroot the machine (you'll see why...)
The first thing I checked, of course, was the pull down power/status bar to see about turning off various connections (ie Wifi, Bluetooth, Refresh, Mobile Data, etc). Unlike other 2.2 Froyo's I've used, specifically..LG..there is no pull down/status bar. Damn. Went thru every Setting imaginable, but won't work. This isn't looking great.
Next thing I tested was my 3G/Wifi issue. To my dismay...the issue remains. Browser and apps are still trying to use 3G first and foremost, as far as I can see. How do I know? Because if I leave Data Network Settting to "Allowed", browser/apps work, and *seem to be using the WiFi, but the second the 3G signal fades or is dropped, I get connection issues, and WiFi is still on. If I turn Data Network Setting to "Not Allowed", it might/might not use the WiFi for a bit and then pretty consistently stop. When I mean "stop", I mean the phone is still showing connected to WiFi yet there are data connection errors on all browsers/apps that need data etc. Sometimes, if the 3G signal returns, I get the pop-up asking me to Allow the data, and if I say yes it works for a bit (but then, because of the 3G signal issue, it cuts out again).
The fix - again - turn on Airplane mode, which disconnects all connections, turn on WiFi, then go back into Call Settings and search for the Home Network again. This is crazy, I can't do this every time, and eventually it craps out again and I have to do it all over.
The other really frustrating thing is I powered it down to do a full recharge overnight...when I booted back up it didn't find my Home Network at all and I had to rescan for it. Testing that out, sure enough, rebooting the phone I have to reselect the Network. Argh.
Any thoughts? The whole necessity of being able to turn 3G data off is so I can avoid this very problem. Basically, I walk in my front door, turn off data over the mobile network, and let my WiFi do it all while I'm home. I wish I could do this as effectively as with my LG on 2.2 (and later, CM7)

Gapps is for CM builds. Bravo is a 2.2 build.
Side note: If you are going to partition it is up to you. I and a few other don't but it is really a personal preference. When I did, I used MiniTool Partition Wizard and it worked like a charm.
A few things though:
1: Your partitions must be set up this way---> Fat then EXT2/3 then Swap (if you choose-I don't and never did-requires you to fastboot a custom kernel and since this is your first experience, I would not suggest it)
2: Sizes. Many noobs will set their EXT2/3 partition to 1gb. That is way too big and you are just wasting space. I find that somewhere between 350-400mb is more than enough.
3: Do not convert your Ext partition to EXT4 unless the ROM you choose supports it. If/when the time comes, use MZ's open recovery utility to do it and not GPArted or MiniTool. The creat a Hugefile that has to be deleted and is a PITA.
4: If you do decide to partition, you will have to boot up fully, then go into your root explorer and in the SD-ext, you will need to create a folder called App (not apps-no S) so it will look like this sdcard/sdext/app. Then reboot and your apps will auto-install there.
Sorry for the long post and good luck.

Once you click on WIFI it should take over as your primary source of data. Not sure why unless I think I might have figured it out. Go into settings>wireless>tick your WIFI and once your router pops up leave it alone and hit your menu button. Set your WIFI sleep policy to NEVER and I bet that takes care of it. Pretty sure that is toggling off your WIFI when 3g is present.
Other solution is Widgetsoid and Elixir both have a widget to toggle off data (so does Beautiful widgets too for that matter). You can use those but I really think the above solution should work for you.

Ah, figured..however when I go into LED Notification, it says "revision 1.6" (or some wording to that effect) at the bottom. Maybe that's just an error, but I just used that to gauge whether or not I had installed the latest revisions etc.
LED Notification works for text messages. I haven't seen it work for calls yet, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. I call the phone, the screen lights up that there's a call, and then ultimately closes when noone answers it. It was at this point that I'd assume the LED notification would come on. Screen is out, so LED, right?

Ok I guess I goofed then, because I tried to update with Gapps after I installed Bravo. One thing I noticed is that I wasn't prompted to sign up/into my Google accounts or set up the phone when I rebooted following the Bravo ROM + Gapps install..that had always happened on my LG when I did CM installs...your explanation makes sense!
But...isn't CM6 basically 2.2 and Bravo basically 2.2? Or maybe I misread that.
At any rate, the real reason I updated Gapps is because I wanted the "new" Market look. I don't like the old one very much, really like the My Apps function. Is there way I can just patch this in to Bravo?

Why do people partition? I did it on my LG, but never used it. Partitioning has nothing to do with installing user apps to the SD card, right? I can do that anyways, true?
Speaking of which..in CM there is the ability to set the default install location. I searched to find something similar in Bravo, to no avail. Is there a way to do this?
Wait...I think you just gave me the answer to both these questions...duh me..

DOHHHHH!!!! I knew I had forgotten something about past settings that made my LG work so well.. I have modified the Wi-Fi sleep policy and hopefully it will work better now! One constant in all the issues I was having, now that you've mentioned this, is that the screen was sleeping/timing out while things were going on. I'd bring it back up, and be all "like, wtf" when my browser wouldn't work or apps that were downloading hung, etc. Mind you, it probably should have reconnected by itself, but whatever, if it doesn't, there's no harm in using Never Sleep for WiFi. I'm not that much of a stickler for battery usage. I go to bed, I charge the phone, I wake up, repeat. I don't need 4 days battery life and if I ever am in a situation where I do, I'm camping or somewhere remote ie no WiFi hence this doesn't apply as I'd just toggle WiFi off completely anyways.
You're right, I could use a Widget to manage my connections and I managed to grab Beautiful when it was 10 cents..but those reside on the screen and I would love to get that pull-down bar back, just so handy to drag down no matter what app/screen you're in...I know, I'm picky
You know what? I got a Notification Toggle app on my PC at home that I'll upload here tonight. I just remembered it while I was at lunch. It is from an older ROM so not sure it will work but worth a try. Usual directions. Push it to /system/apps reboot. It should be just what you are looking for if it works. Might not though so you'll just have to see.
CM6 is 2.2 and so is Bravo only Bravo was made from the official Korean update that was handed down and Mioze has created the CM6 from source. So yes they are both 2.2 but very different.
Edit: I have the latest Market.apk too. It is floating around here somewhere but I can't find in for some reason. I'll upload them tonight.

try them both first, then see which one you want to use as your daily driver.
i personally like the 6.3 better because it runs the fastest even on stock speed 720 Mhz
you can use Open Recovery to do a full backup, and switch back and forth between 7.1 and 6.3 until you decide which one you like best
7.1 has more themes to choose from and is more up to date, but... less free resources vs. 6.3 which is indirectly related to why it feels less quick than 6.3
7.1 feels similar to the speed you get on the stock ROM from Wind, 6.3 feels like a brand new device
