hi everybody! finally i got this wonderful mobile phone! i'm just disappointed by the fact i can't connect to any wireless network... not even mine, which is proprly configured... i can obtain the list of all the networks, i see if they are free, if they are encrypted and so on, but when i try to connect to mine or the free ones appears "connecting..." and then it skips this connection and try with the following one... how comes it does so? i tried with different versions of OSs but it's always the same issue... i also disassembled it and everything is it its place... can anyone help me please? thanks
Welcome to forums
Yes, you have one of the best devices ever made!
Try a hard reset or reflash another ROM
Here instructions:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Universal
Good luck,
already tried, but nothing... i tried to use the tomal one, the italian one and the chinese one... but it's not working... do u have any idea why? in my opinion the hardware it's fine, as long as it can see the networks the wifi is working. but the software is not responsible because i tried 3 different roms and it's always the same... i really can't imagine where could be the cause...
Try to do A doc format
what do you mean?
EDIT: now i read about it, i already did it and i'm flashing right now!
EDIT 2: No, it's not working... always showing "connecting" but then just goes back to "available" status for the network, it just does not work...

OK one thing you should notice is Universal is only capable b class of wireless so.. and see what class of wifi modem you have and try to install following cab (which i got from Jonny) it should make it capable of wifi b and g and see if problem still presists try another wifi modem and still same then i suspect it might be hardware issue....
also, isn't the radio responsible for wifi connection? perhaps try a different radio?
mine is b/g both active... i'll try that rajivshahi!
@jonny: i both tried .18 and .15... should i try the previous ones?
EDIT: I tried installing that .cab, but it's not working... do i have to do something in particular after installing it? what do you mean by hardware issue? what could be wrong with it if i see the networks?

the cab just creates a some registry. so try to connect to other modem and see... if everything fail then it might be issue with uni's hardware... as if it was software issue flashing to another rom and another radio should fix it...
just a quick question.... does it connect to a open network or is it just the encrypted oneş.... i cant connect to any other than a WEP network...???
Try this (Configure Wireless Network, DON'T activate "This is a hidden network")

Maybe this will help:
In my case, after a hardreset, I cannot connect to a Wi-Fi Network until I do the following.
1.Turn on Wi-Fi--> when your network shows up, enter the Network key and hit "Connect". (Here is, where the device tries to connect, but does not! IS THIS YOUR CASE?)
2.Go to Wi-Fi-settings (through the Communications-Manager) --> push and hold your finger on your network to open the context menu --> select "edit".
3.At the "Configure Wireless Network" page make sure the check for "This is a hidden network" is NOT set! --> Hit "Next".
4.At the "Configure Network Authentication" choose for Authentication "WPA-PSK" and for Data Encryption: "TKIP". (Make sure the Network key is entered.) Hit "Next" and then "Finish."
Again your device will try connecting and (hopefully ) be successful!
Cheers,
mdajj

Welcome aboard
Thanks for that tip, hope can solve the issues some members reported
the point is that i can't connect to open networks... now i don't have any encrypted networks i can access... and i tried to set the networks as not hidden, bit it's not working... mdajj got exactly what happens to me "hit "Connect": here is, where the device tries to connect, but does not!" and it shows directly "unavailable status for the network, while the router is on the same desk i am sitting in front of. T_T
now i start thinking that the uni can connect only to encrypted netwoks... how could it be? i bought it because of the opposite reason...
Wifi cannot connect if signal is too low.
Unmount the device, check the wifi/antenna connection and make sure that it is not getting touched with other assembly...
i already did it, and i checked again today, the antenna is fine it does not touch anything and its shape is perfect... BUT today i noticed something missing, i have no idea why i never noticed before... the conductive tapes are missing, but even if they were in place, they'd not touch the antenna, so i guess it's not a problem... am i right?
wifi connection problems
Can I suggest a non technical approach. I also had a lot of problems with wifi a couple of years ago, it turned out to be the BATTERY I had a noname battery from Hong Kong that I think just wasn't generating enough power. The phone and everything seemed to work fine except for wifi. When I replaced the battery wifi suddenly worked perfectly. If you know anyone else with a Uni that works on wifi swap the battery and give it a try.
i also thought about that, but even when the power supply is connected to the phone wifi does not work... and then i have 2 batteries, one is not original, Yaobao brand, and the other one seems to be original, but with both does not work... [both 1620mAh]
Thinking about this, I don't know whether this is relavent, or simply an earth... but the original battery has metal case (or partially), which has a contact pressed to it when inserted in Uni. I have replacement batteries with solely plastic cases, so the contact isn't made. This doesn't affect my wifi, but it's just a thought.
yea, u r right, i did not noticed before... i have both kind of batteries, with one it makes contact, with the other it doesn't... and it's still not working! by the way thanks for the help!

Blow some hot air around the board (if you have a hot-air-station). This is the last thing you can try.

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.

*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.
I have a couple of wifi networks shown in the list but i can't seem to locate my home network. Is there some sort of problem with the OS? i updated my nexus s to 2.3.4 already...
Would CM7 solve this problem? i believe my router is on channel 13, can it be issue as well? can it be solved by installing CM7...
Please reply soon because i will stop fiddling with my device if i have to return it which i really don't want to...since the other choice is Galaxy S and i don't want that because of its hard button...
is your ssid hidden? Try entering the ssid and password for your network manually.
i tried that as well but it says "network not in range" when i'm standing 6 meter away from router....i don't know i'm feeling so bad...is there any rom around which fixes this problem? any fix? please help me out beofre i go and throw the phone on the vendor's face :/
Hi,
I'm on 11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-ville, official (HBoot 2.15), Radio 1.35a.32.45.27
I have a strange problem with my WiFi. I can't really tell what details are important, so I'm gonna give you guys the full story.
After rebooting, everything works fine and the phone instantly connects to my WPA2 PSK secured WiFi at home. When I'm at university during the day, I'm connected to another WPA2 WiFi (maybe some of you have heard about "eduroam", TTLS/PAP authentification), which also works fine. However, when I get home in the evening, my phone won't connect to my personal WiFi at home any more. I see the SSID, but when I try to connect, it says "Connecting..." for a milisecond, then just jumps back to showing me it's a WPA2 secured WiFi without having done anything. I get no error message or anything, it just doesn't connect and doesn't even seem to really try to connect.
When I reboot the phone it instantly works again without a problem.
Any ideas? Are there error logs for failed WiFi connection attempts anywhere for further analysing the problem? Any hint is appreciated!

Hi,
I had exactly the same problems with m8. I have a Virgin Superhub 2 at home which broadcasts on 2.4 and 5 Ghz. After disabling one of these frequencies, the behaviour briefly changed. Then went back to not working. With eduroam all worked nicely.
I read somewhere that I should activate the "Scan always available" setting. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to try that because I was so fed up with
- the significantly lower sound on CM (is that something you experience with radio 1.35a?)
- mobile signal drops
that I wen back to Maximus 10 where I have no problems at all.
I had radio 1.15 and 2.15 HBOOT when I had those problems. Now I'm on also 1.35 with Maximus 10 and problem free but would like to return to CM if the low sound problem and the WiFi problem could be sorted out.
Here's an interesting little detail I noticed: When I stand right next to my router (full WiFi signal strength) and click on my WiFi and choose connect, the signal strength drops down to one bar immediately. Also, the eduroam network changes from "not in range" to "disabled".
Playing around with the WiFi options didn't help.
edit:
What exactly do you mean by lower sound? That the phone's maximum sound volume is lower than normal? That's something I experienced on my old htc desire, but not with my htc one s. Also mobile signal seems to be stable, no signal drops. The only thing I found curious is that with activated mobile internet, it often changes between 3G, H and H+, but judging from google search results that seems to be normal or not connected to the custom rom.
went through the CM bugtracker, apparently it's a known issue without a solution
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/CYAN-3923 if you want to know more
One last question, maybe someone here can answer it: As far as I understand the issue, it's a problem with an old WiFi driver and the corresponding kernel modules.
Wouldn't this issue then be present in all ROMs which don't use the stock kernel? Or did I misunderstand something?

Same problem here with Miuri. Tries to connect and then gives up.
The problem has been resolved by the CM11 devs. I'm running nightly 20140819 and it's working fine now for me. :good:
Hey guys,
Having an issue with WiFi since the Marshmallow update. We have an open WiFi network at work that you need to sign in to the firewall to access internet. Previously it worked fine, but after the Marshmallow update, my phone constantly drops the WiFi network. It always happens when I lock the phone or otherwise let the screen turn off for more than about a minute, but it also happens even when I'm using my phone, if I'm on for more than about 5 minutes on average it drops the network. When I go to reconnect, it lists under the SSID "Internet not available" but I just tap the network and tap connect and it connects anyway, doesn't even make me sign into the firewall again. I'd really appreciate some help with this, if I can't get this fixed I'll be doing away with Android for good. I don't use my phone for much other than Facebook and games, so I'm not at all opposed to using a custom ROM if that would help. Just haven't installed one since CM7 on my HTC Evo Shift, so I duno which would be best for my situation. Thanks in advance for any input!
Bump. Hopefully someone has a solution...
One more bump before I give up...

try talking to your system administrator at work. The upgrade may cause a comparability issue that maybe fixed by a simple tweak at work.
