The War with Google has begun - G1 Android Development

We were lucky.
Google's security measures were pathetic and still are, but now, it has come to their attention that the security measures pose more of a problem than before. Google is attempted to block ADP users from having access to the market due to their potential to download any app for free.
Now, it has come to their attention that RC33 root users have the same ability. Security is now a top priority when it comes to google. They already have cupcake ready to go, that's done.
Google's probably realized by now that their security measures are simply pathetic. We're going to have to step up our game as they step up theirs.

What's the error you're getting? I'm getting that to visit checkout.google.com to fix the problem.
EDIT: That only happens with one app... ? Umm, do you have proof that they are blocking ADP users?

you're lucky. they probably filter ip's too. i can't even list paid apps.. (not from US)

Honestly how hard could it be to encrypt an app and get a certificate update for the premium apps you purchased to decrypt them every time your phone syncs with Google?

Root is google's problem right now.
No matter what they do with the premium apps, they can be cracked by root users.
Buy the app, pull the .zip, crack it. Refund the app. Throw it back in the phone and install.
End of story.
Google needs to eliminate root. We have the advantage of course.
We already have root, and we are hacking which is much easier than defending.
Google knows this, which is apparent from their android forums.

It's easier for google to tie the app to user's gmail account. So the app will only run if it's on a "I purcheased this" list... harder to crack if they add a file signature on top of that.
P.S.:
If google want's to hire me they know where to find me.. hehehe.

Can you elaborate or provide any info on what you are talkinng about before I close this thread?
I have an adp and rc33 phone, neither are having issues with the market.

i could say what to do but hmm ;o( dont wanna argue with no one

It's not paid apps. ADPs can't see protected apps on the market.

like which apps ? yes i know "protected" but wich one is protected so i can go and test cuz i was in the market few mins ago had no issues x_x

Seems to be more of a bug in the protection option rather than some thing google's doing to ban the sales of apps to adp customers.. there's a few related posts on the google groups site..

Bettercut is a popular protected app. Can you see it? (if you have a rooted rc33 and you're in the US you should see it)

Its Google's own fault that we all have root.....they made one mistake...then we hacked it and exploited it to a extreme extent.
Rooted phones only take updates signed with test keys right...
So couldn't Google sign one of there O.T.A. updates with test keys and get rid of out root?

Well, they could but then how would they explain it to users without rooted phones who's phones were keep on rebooting and failing to install the test-key signed updates due to the method that Google can use to force the OTA updates?
And what about the users with ADP's? I'm pretty sure that Google wouldn't want to piss them off by forcing them to install a root-less regular update.

Ehhh Yea That Makes It Very Unlikely That Google Will Ever Do It ....But If They Ever Decide That Root Is A Serous Problem Then Its A Possibility

there is no such thing as a crack-proof app. Every app can be cracked if you have the right skills. As soon as paid apps get going there will be loads of places online offering app downloads, just wait and see.

do you have some sort of incredible inside information that no one else knows about?
how do you know 'cupcake' is done and ready to go? last i heard they were no where near completion.

Most of the paid apps are a joke anyways. I bet I could make a program called Dont buy this app! and sell it for a buck and still sell a **** ton of them.

Please, I think your being a bit over dramatic here, Google can't take actions too far because it would really kill the whole point of android being an open source, for developers phone.
While sure they can always up the security, but theres always going to be a way inside the program unless they wanted to lock down making and installing new apps. If they wanted that they wouldn't add an option to install thirdy party apps.

Thread is closed until further info.
This looks to be a problem with developers and a feature they are trying to implement but failing. If you have an issue please contact the developer of the app.

new Droid Sans for dev phone and other dev apks

First, the new Droid Sans for the dev phone works great! If you haven't seen it, check the market!
That program, and some of the other apks, such as the one for flash seem to get a ton of really stupid comments in the market. Also, the market now seems to be too big, with not enough sub-categories to find things easily.
IMO, there should at least be a category for advanced users and developers only. (Maybe even one which you would have to sign in to visit, with a big disclaimer saying something like "These programs will not run on most G1s. They are programs for rooted or (don't know if Google will like the rooted part), developer's phones. Many of them are apk's for developers to make it easier for them to write better apps for you, rather than stand-alone-apps. If you are a developer, or an advanced user, please sign up to download the apps."
Is there a place to suggest improvements to the market to Google?
(Maybe I just am feeling nasty after looking at all those grade school comments in the market).

tbh i think that if you had a moderator (obviously not just the one ) who
monitored the market and removed stupid comments and who could even issue 24 hour bans or something it would improve things tenfold.
and about the rooted section, google wouldn't like it but what can they do? no matter what they release people will find a way to get root access again google might as well just release cupcake with root access already enabled.
If Google released cupcake with root access, there would be an awful lot of happy G1 users!
I see you have RC30, do you have auto rotate with your pictures? Now that I've got the new Droid Sans, everything except pictures seems to auto rotate. (although I've only tried one photo so far, I need to check others).

Project: OpenAndroid aka Open Android Alliance

All i want in this thread is only if you are interested in developing/themeing/ect. for our Open Android Alliance Project. Post requiring info needed.
Open-Android-Alliance Create a fully open source Android OS
The new site is officially up: Home of Open Android Alliance register now everyone
As you all are probably aware Cyanogen has been sent a Cease and Desist order.
The purpose here comes from an idea of Sr. member Doooshty where we should
use this opportunity to get everyone come together and create alternatives to Google'
apps we are calling on anyone with experience who is up to the challenge to set this
straight and out "Android" Google.
People we are rebuilding android as we see fit if you want to Frankenstein it to hell open another
thread... OPEN SOURCE ALL THE WAY if i can not get the source one way or another it is not being used
This however is not about Getting back at google or who was in the wrong in the C&D
This is solely a project about distributing a *Flavor* of android that is fully customizeable
and does not rely on google or other copyrights...
As of now the goal is a Rom (No google at all) that we can make calls from and text
I would like all apps to be developed in house so it is easy to get in contact with the developer if we
want to make any changes or get intouch with the origional developer to make sure they approve.
All apps to be open source not just free and require writtin permission from origional developer giving permission to edit (mainly visually)
THIS IS ALL EXPERIMENTAL AT THIS TIME
We are going to need several things from devs such as:
1. New app store
slideme.org
anddevstore (cant find exact link)
various other new open source projects in process of being developed
Obsidiandesire is looking into the android store
2. New email system
Dev needed
3. New Navigation
Dev needed
4. New IM client
Dev needed
5. YouTube
Dev needed
Talk of porting a .flv player but unclear about content copyright
6. Setup Wizard
(App developers is it possible to create a simple app that is basicly
a drop down with all major carriers APN settings that will
automaticly set at first boot?)
irrenhaus discovered it is a only database change. Any app developers
want to look into this with him?
7. Sync Alternative
Dev needed
8. Browser
(steel, default, opera)
Dev needed
I would like to get permission before using them if possible.
9. Making apps talk to each other.
Dev needed
10. Space for development files.
Anyone?
we Should open one of them google project pages jk
11. We need a centeral "stock" theme perhaps we can get some prototypes drawn up. this is so the visual
designers have something they can go against so every app has a sort of "flow" to it and color schemes are
not changing drastically through every app. (this can be changed later)
90% of useful apps come from this website in some way so i believe along with Doooshty and Cyanogen
that this can be accomplished...
CALLING ALL DEVS!!!! If you are interested in taking android away from the chains
of the man post here or send me a private message.
Can anyone create a Rom with no google what so ever to start with so we can see where
we need to go from there?
This is coming along nicely (other then the occasional "This is dumb blah blah blah") I want to thank everyone for taking an interest in this.
Now while other ways may work like loop holes and loading close source apps on the user end at this point it will require one of 2 things either 1. Each developer does it thier own way (which is perfectly fine). or 2 automatically import the closed source apps in via script (which im sure could be painless in itself) while this is easy the visual customization would be alot less user friendly AFAIK such as theming. Say you got that nice new manup theme everything just flows together but u open up a stock browser/email/whatever it really throws off the experiance I may be completely wrong but this is what I think.
Dont get me wrong i love google but id rather not have them stopping development right as we got something new rolling.
Stop Talk. Do Work.
Just to save you some time, Google Maps is already freely available from the Android Market:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.google.android.apps.maps
I don't know about the other apps though...
Alright
Alright that's good but if there is no market it wont be easily updated i would think without other software.

Well, as far as I understand (and this is TommyPickles' theory) Google was pissed off because Cyanogen included a pre-release version of the new Android Market from Donut.
If that's the case, there would be nothing to prevent him from including the current Cupcake Market (or so I would hope).
F*** it who need those crappy Apps anyways. Just replace them with some that actually work better!

Meebo IM is free and is much better then the google im app. It has Gtalk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Facebook Chat, MySpace chat and more
http://slideme.org/ looks like the best replacement for Market.
My concern is with the sync code. You can build the providers from AOSP, but you can't actually sync without doing the registration process, which requires the closed-source SetupWizard and Checkin applications.

We should try to not rely on the Hero roms for anything because the entire thing is considered closed source. The only difference is HTC hasn't complained yet. I'm guessing it will hit the fan with HTC the second a hero rom is ported to a non HTC device.
I vote for replacing the browser with steel
and email app with k9-mail.
We need also to patch the installer to be able to install apps to system.

[Q] Why there is no uninstall feature in Android?

I have about two weeks experience with Android OS and as a software developer I will be interested to know the technical details behind the Android OS.
I have already noticed this is possible to upgrade applications ported with the handset's ROM i.e. the Market app. This raised the question to me why can't I uninstall applications from the ROM without rooting or risking my handset's warranty to achieve this?
Is my expectation as a user of computers for 20 years unreasonable to think in 2010 with all software development and technological advances the uninstall feature should have been in Android OS from day one?
This is not exactly like Google is the first company in the world developed an OS to just the lack of experience with what users would want. From what I have seen so far in world of Android is that, the first thing users would want to know how to root their handset to remove packages that they have no use for.
My guess is that Google doesn't want users removing Systems apps. I'm assuming that they think that these applications are core and thus don't want you removing them. Remove the market, no more apps... or way to get it back etc.
Applications installed by you can be uninstalled, I'm just thinking it is the same as in windows, you can't uninstall the task manager etc (Bad example but meh =P)
Very simple - to prevent lay users from removing critical components.
Can you imagine the service costs involved in reparing devices that that have been damaged by people trying to remove bloatware?
They still give you the option to restore.
OK DISREGUARD THIS AS I MISSED THE PART ABOUT NEEDING TO ROOT!
They can be removed but its not recommended to do so without know EXACTLY what your removing and weather is vital to your phones operating system.
BUT in order to do so your phone needs root access, and root explorer installed. There are several forums on just about all android support sites that explain how to root, install the manager, and which apps/files NOT to remove.

Ye u can remove almost every stock app but this may affect the stability of your phone, modifying your phone always comes with the option restoring it back to default. If something goes wrong with moding (something really hard and extraordinary rare ) u can restore it. Browsing through Xda might solve many questions, we all didn't wanted stock rom (not because it was bad, because we can have s omething better. This community has VERY VERY good developers.
Androids own!!!
One thing I still don't get is...
How can Google upgrade Market app without the su privilage but the rest of the world has to root their phones to remove bloatware such as 'amazon mp3'?
@ftgg99: How much bloatware in Windows cost Microsoft or PC manufacturers? None in fact they get paid to include them with your hardware. However, I see an issue with mobile devices. You have already paid for the ROM storage, the bigger ROM size is the more expensive your handset would be, then the manufacturer uses your already paid ROM to make even more money by installing bloatware. I would be a fool to think manufacturers would pass on a percentage of the bloatware earnings by reducing the cost of their products to the consumers in this model.
The way I see it, the burden has been put on the communities such as xda. Users wouldn't ask the manufacturers how to root their handsets and this is left to the dedicated individuals to overcome the mess compnies normally leave us with. I'm not going to say the mess is a cost saving measure by companies.
The thing is that there are a lot more people buy and use phones than computers. After someone buys a smart phone with intention to use for calls, text, web and to use some apps, they realize the possibilities of the smart phone, they start digging in to the files, therefore Google blocked the root folder from modifying, otherwise Google would have to repair warrantied phones that didn't have to end up there just because people didn't know or care what they did. But if you got passed ROOTING, you must know what you are doing and from this point you can modify files and apps, but now ROOTING becomes too easy.
Basically just because too many juveniles got their hands on the equipment.

The answer, from my point of view, is quite simple: they just upgrade the application on /data/app ON TOP of the /system/app default Market version. So, you can always go back to your "default" version just by "uninstalling updates".
Summary: they do not upgrade the Market form ROM, just install the new version on top.

Have you tried to work with iPhone(don't know about iPhone 4)? They build fortress around their system and even the apps you install cannot be uninstalled until you gailbrake it and use 3rd party installer to uninstall. And not talking about the "MONOPLY" they run with AT&T.

Motorola Solutions TC55

Hello,
I have a TC55 from Motorola Solutions (i.e. the enterprise division that does not belong to Google). It is a rugged phone with a big battery (4400 mAh), but certainly not the sleekest design. Not sure if there is much interest in this kind of device, and I am certainly no developer - but in case anyone is investigating the TC55, here are two things I found so far:
It does not come with any Google apps: no Maps, no Gmail, no Play store and so on.
It is easily rooted with Framaroot using the Gandalf exploit.
(I cannot post this info into the Framaroot thread due to my low post count).
Anyway, maybe this helps someone. I will be happy to try to answer any questions about the TC55, but keep in mind I am no pro and I am not keen in messing around in its internals much more than I have done already.

I heard my company is planning to go with these soon for entry level supervisors such as myself. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. All the specs and brochures from Motorola keep calling it a mobile computer in a smartphone "form factor" but never actually call it a phone. I didn't see anything in any of the specs to lead me to believe for sure that it was a phone or if it was just an Android computer in a smartphone form factor.
Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, that, you're certain this is a phone, correct?
Thanks.

Sort of a let-down really. Yes, it "can" be a phone. Or without a sim card it can be a really powerful Android based mobile computer. That's what it is going to be for most of us. Only a few supervisors with area management approval are going to get units with the phone features working. Still cool. Just not as cool as I'd thought it was going to be.

Maybe the crippling could be worked around or undone by people with good Android knowledge - but I suppose it might not be the best idea to go against company policy.

I don't think they're doing anything all that special to cripple it. They just won't all have sim cards or a cell plan. Pretty much as simple as that.
I won't be doing anything to circumvent that though or rooting it or anything like that. It's not like it's a gift and it belongs to me or anything. After almost 22 years, I've kind of grown to like my job and getting a paycheck every two weeks.I'd kind of like to keep it for another 15 or 20 years. Who knows, maybe my manager will decide that I need cell service with mine.
I work for a large automaker in the U.S. We have over 2.8 million square feet under roof. Personally, I can be anywhere on in the plant, on the roof, in pits & sub-basements underneath or anywhere on or near the 50 acre plant site at any given time. A lot of what I need to do on a daily basis is through our intranet portal. They're putting in something like 500 new wi-fi repeaters/extenders all around the plant as well. They're purchasing these for over 300 first line supervisors at my site alone. I'm pretty sure they're doing this corporate-wide so I hate to think what they're spending on these things as a corporation. I'm sure it would bankrupt many small nations! In addition to giving us portal access away from the desk, these are meant to replace our aging industrial radio system. As expensive as these are, they're still much cheaper than $1.5 to $2k per person for a radio that has no other built-in functionality and these do seem pretty ruggedized.
Still a shame about the phone functionality though.

Hi,
I got stucked with trying to get google calendars from my google account to TC55.
I found one solution to setup google account as a corporate one, but it's not available anymore due to change in google policy.
I can setup google mail via email account, but that doesn't bring me my calendars to the device.
I tried to install gapps but without success.
Is there any other way?
Thanks.

No idea, I haven't tried. As far as I understand gapps are usually installed via flashing a zip from recovery, and the stock recovery of the TC55 does not have that option, it only allows reflashing a whole image, if I understand it correctly. Either way, I have come to appreciate the open source alternatives and do not want to get Google on my phone, so I will not try, sorry.
However, going by this thread over at the Motorola support forum, it seems it won't take long until there is official gapps support:
https://developer.motorolasolutions.com/thread/4989
Motorola has now released a TC55-firmware with Google apps. Here are the release notes:
https://atgsupportcentral.motorolasolutions.com/content/emb/docs/ReleaseNotes/Release%20Notes%20-%20%20TC55_RevAPlus_GMS_01%2074G_v10.htm
According to the support email they sent me, to get the actual release you need to perform the following arcane ritual:
Resolution Type is : Software Download

restrictedSW :
T55N0JGMVRUEN17400.zip 321 MB TC55 OS Recovery Update package
T55N0JGMVAUEN17400.apf 321 MB TC55 OS update package file for deployment using MSP
If you require access to OS files for TC55 1.74 GMS then call the local Support Desk and provide following information:
a. Site ID
b. Serial #(s)
c. Phone #

Don't ask me what the local support desk number is, or the site ID, or why they have to make this so complicated.
Hi Elanguescence,
I think I screwed up my tc55 by enabling the multiuser function without first creating the white list. Now all the users (with admin rights) does not have access to all the programs, including Applock Administrator and Multiuser administrator.
To cut things short, do you know of a way to reset the device? I don't mind setting it to factory default and start over. I've googled it and some said to launch Rapid Deployment and scan a barcode from there... but my Rapid Deployment just says "Service Not Ready, Please Wait" and get stuck there.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.
Any TC55 users here? Should be getting my unit w/ GMS soon... How do you guys like it?
Is the bootloader locked?
Sent from my Moto X
Hey!
I want to Buy one TC55 for me. Normally i hate Android and the Google stuff on the Phone but some Motorola Salesman told me there is a version with out.
Now i use an Sybian Device. That mean i am "offline" the hole time and when i need Internet the Phone connect the the Internet.
So how about that phone can i work "offline" to?
I will also use an VPN Tunnel to block on my backend all Connnection i dont want. Does all Data trough this VPN Tunnel ?
How about the Barcode Scanning does it work good?
I know for 2D i need to use the Cam but how works it when i am in some other Application?
Nobody?
Ok. I just bought a TC55 from a Friend and I was wondering if someone would post the update to get GSM and the Factory Reset packages. I went to the page and it requires all the information posted above before. Mine is rooted, but i am trying to install GAPS but the recovery is the basic and cannot. I manually installed Google Play and the Google Play Services but Google Play services keep crashing and the Play Store will not connect, any ideas ?
the are 2 versions one with google s... service and the other without.
So i belive you have the first?
(Can i ask you some question about that phone?)

apk wont get installed..several (its not access)

its a pretty fresh install, ota 015,twrp/magisk --SN fine.
i could install the typical things like openvpn, titanium, etc
but apk make problems, the usual tools wincomm/total,google drive...have access.
still the files get dl'ed, and i hit install,it goes up to about 90%.. then "app not installed"(11differend apk, from all kind of sources, and quite clean)
-the system is quite fresh, all 11 programs/tools would be a firsttimer on the phone
-i even cleared via twrp the delvic/art ,just in case.
i mean,i managed to hardbrick the phone in less then 6 hours after getting it(youtube link wrong boot img,and it could only get worse), unbricked it in 30 minutes via chinatool(needed that darn driver).
of course the 2nd day of install wont get smooth...
maybe someone has a idea,or maybe i have to get chinatool again...
I use Fx file explorer with root plugin them just install apk with root installer usually gets part that problem.
But would also check make sure you don't already have newer version of apk installed.
Other reason for this problem not having necessary dependencies installed like Google framework etc.
If root installer doesn't get desired results you will med to provide more detailed info. ( ie what apk, etc) and someone might be able to provide assistance.
apps2sd clean broken apps then reinstall might help

that worked for some things, for others i found a workaround,i like that tool, but this ads are annoying, luckypatcher couldnt remove them.
about the apk's, some are clearly not to speak of here, others are just systemmanagement, like a most simple app to change and block speaker,i cant stand, and never accept the speakerfunction,if i phone then at my ear,or via bluetooth, and to avoid any probs ,duo missclicking and loadspeak in a area where you should not,i block them by force. finding such a app on playstore....good luck
howerver all files are clean, that much i know, even kaspersky yells if a dirty apk gets downloaded, all other..i can only base on reviews etc, (they can be fake, but not 100+)

I think you should just clean install the ROM again, seems like a bit of issue u got here.
true,
which method would be the most simple and best to avoid the issue
-reset to factory-sys (unsure if it fixes a broken sys, instead of just deleting all userbased stuff)
-twrp clearing and the whole rom again (this method might work,if wiping everything is included)
-taking chinatool and start with h2o then back to the realdeal ota15 (thats what i did before,so iam not sure)
its not that i dont know the methods, its more like..i want your opinion what would be the best solution to avoid it.

Well first off I wouldn't mention lucky patcher again. It is a warez app and banned on XDA as are all mentions of the app. Also something to think about. App developers have been adding code that looks for lucky patcher and will not install if it is installed on the device. Some even cause the device to have random issues if it is installed. Heck I know one rom that removes it every time the user reboots their device.
As for the reviews. Dont put anything in the numbers. I can by 1000 downloads and 5 star reviews for about 50 bucks.
thanks for the reply
well the tool itself cant be made as "warez" since some of its functions are quite handy, like removing adds.
(whats completly legal, atleast in the EU)
about devs who enter code to sneakout other apps..no worries,
since you are in the op6 board,i assume you have one, go under apps, then tap the left border, and pull towards right, there is a secret stash, add all the fancy stuff you wanne hide there, and even google ,pokemon, fortnite run if the stuff is hidden there (of course magisk has to be set right too)
about the reviews true, but if some of those are quite names, that are known in android, linux or Minecraft business,i kinda trust them, and if that review isnt 1 day old,its fine, especially with comments like"7 weeks now,and it still works well,no flaws no hickups.." (example) makes me believe that this apps are worth the 0 bucks paid for.
iam not going to mention warez, but lucky is none of those, especially since several german speaking sides have mentioned it and praised it aswell (the big ones, with printed paper stuff),so i assume, eu rights, should fit in here aswell, (not that iam part of the EU,but swiss)

I don't care what other sites do or say. Lucky is banned here as a Warez app. Bottom line.
It is the ai gle most hated app on this site. People have been flamed just for having the icon on their screen.
So I'll tell you what most others will as well. You will find no help here as long as you have it installed. Until you remove it you are on your own.

Moderator note:
Lucky patcher is considered warez on xda and the discussion about it is prohibited. Yes, it does have legitimate uses, but as long as it also has illegitimate uses that cheat developers, it will remain classified as warez here.
Thanks!
speak about hornets nest,
well thanks for the clearification, there was clearly no ill intent or drama in mind.
but thats the confusion part, one of the most readed pc print magazins in the eu has on their webside guides about how to root, what rooted apps you should have, and has the mentioned one also, how could a normal person think of it as the whorst app arround.
are there more names not to mention? kinda like a list of "dont talk about,it just makes drama"
thanks again for clearing that up

There is a few. The easiest way is to search before asking. You know filling the rules you agreed to when you joined. Also any app that can bypass paying for an app/service is automatically banned (depending on the app)
As for the mag. Use your head and common sense. You never listen to what a reporter says about something like this. Or really anything for that matter. They just repeat what they hear. They have no real understanding of what is going on or the risks involved. I bet that magazine didn't mention that lucky patcher has a history of privacy violations and wares being installed in the background right?
hmm i think that wrighter knew exactly what he was going for, especially the anti-googlead part, well many europeans hate adds, and are able todo any and everything to get rid of them ,and in many nations are adblocker-blocker forbidden by law, means companies cant do a thing if you block adds and such a tool is fun from that side, noone mentions that is has other functions, until here mentioned, well the problem with such is, if people know tool X can block adds, they use it 100% for that, and dont touch other parts, until someone mention more functions, then it gets interesting..well until you learn the disappointment that the said functions are just for games.
why the hack would i play games on a phone? i have a tr1950 with fancy parts, for my gaminghabbits, that smartphone is a tool, not a nds or such.. i get the nonlegal part, but the sense of it is beyond me, whoever needs that shall buy a pc, *imo*

Ad blocking has nothing to do with it. XDA has many of them all over the site. Look you will never be able to justify its use here. So we will end this here. If you need help again dont mention the app other wise you might get far worse flamed next time.
