Upgrading to SAMSUNG OMNIA - General Topics

hi, do you think is it a good move to do buy samsung omnia when now i got htc touch, please reply and say a couple of words about omnia.

you do know the stylus of the omnia is seperate from the device.

yes, i know but my question is about is it good move to upgrade to omnia, give me your opinions if you used it or have it.

Don't get me wrong. I like my omnia a lot, even on edge-only on ATT. I use tv-out alot. I've had the tilt and fuze. The qvga vs. vga doesn't bother me. I don't mind the lack of a hard keyboard. The optical sensor doesn't work as well as a d pad. I can't play as many games as I used to play on other devices. But I gave my fuze to my daughter and am using the omnia, because I like it lots and fits my needs better. If you had asked even 2 months ago, I would've said go for the omnia. But, I am saying now, if you can wait, go for a newer model shown at the MWC this week. They are all better than the omnia or fuze or in at least one major way, be it new wvga screen, fast processor, a tilt screen, etc. If you can't wait, omnia's good.

I was in the same boat a few months ago after my selling my Elfin. I am more than happy with the Omnia, I miss the stylus probably the most but the speed of the phone vs the Touch is vast. Also the multimedia experinece is far improved.

Oh yeah, I forgot that. But I always used a closed pen for a stylus, anyways... Got tired of the locking-of-the-fuze-with-the-stylus bit.

From an 8125 to a TyTN, to an iPhone, and BACK!! Question!

Hi guys!
Well, after suffering for a few years with the pains of a Windows-based phone (I haven't used WM6.1, yet. Only 6), I bought an iPhone yesterday.
And you know what?
It reallllly sucks, as compared to a Windows Mobile device.
Yes, the user interface is gorgeous and all, but oh my, I miss so many of my HTC's features, it's not even funny!
So, the iPhone is on Craigslist now!
Now, here is a question for you, if I may............
As a big fan of the 8125, and a bigger fan of the 8525...
...what would you say is the new state-of-the-art device now for me?
Is the 8925/TyTn II the way to go?
That was the "in" device about 6 months ago, last time I checked.
Perhaps I am a bit behind the times.
I always trust fellow XDA Windows Mobile device users for their input...
...so, before I start reading all the various websites out there...
I am asking you guys for some quick pointers in the right direction.
BOY this iPhone is a TOY, next to my 8525!!!!
Thanks!!!
M
I went from a tytn to a motorola q9, and I was missing so many PPC things.... so I got a Tytn II and I used it for about 3 months, its a great phone, but I really liked the thinnes of the moto, so I got the diamond and I am really happy with it so far... IMHO the qwerty keyboard on the diamond is much better than the iphone since you have to press more(you can travel between keys without lifting your finger)
Interesting.
I realllly think that a keyboard is important to me.
Put a VGA screen.. THAT is something interesting to me.
The 8925 (I don't think) has a VGA screen. Too bad.
With a slide out keyboard... is there anything more advanced than the 8925??
The Touch Pro, which is waiting for release any day now. I feel that winmo7 is just months away to maybe 1/2 a year away, and that it will prob. require new hardware, can you deal with your 8525 until then?
The Touch Pro is coming very soon (next few months)
http://wmpoweruser.com/?tag=htc-touch-pro
Surur
yeah, the touch pro will be the way to go...the 8525 can handle things till then!!!
WOW!
VERY nice!
That Touch Pro is gonna cost a pretty penny, isn't it?
Keyboard... VGA screen... The works!
Yup, I think that will be my next PPC.
The 8525 can wait until then. I'm just a bit bored.
I am eager to install 6.1, but it's been so long since I did the firmware and a full re-install, that it's going to take me a full day to start re-reading the wikis, finding the best ROM, and so forth.
It's just a shame to do this, when I know a new one is around the corner.
But it does look like the Touch Pro is the one to get!
So, I will hang on for now!
UNLESS the 8925's are really cheap!
Thanks guys!

Advice for New phone (Omnia Vs xperia Vs pro)

Currently SEP900i for more than 2 years now and would like to change to Winmobile again.
Previously used O2 blueangel first with WM2003SE and then with WM5.
Currently i would like to know which phone do you suggest based on above 3. Though i would miss the keyboard on omnia but the camera and some other software features looks interesting.
Also since i dont change my mobile for at least 2 years leaving in China where we dont have mobile plans in EU so i would like to know if any of the 3 can be installed with WM7 whenever it is launched. Sorry if this is a little stupid but wont harm if i know could be done in future.
TIA.
omnia got a bigger screen but lower res
"i would like to know if any of the 3 can be installed with WM7 whenever it is launched"
nobody can say for sure
acceleration Meter would prob mean more wm7 features supported though x1 dont have that not sure about Omnia
Omnia has an accelerometer
edit: in Asia there is an Omnia that has an 800x480 screen, if your looking at Omnia's then check this out. I think its called the Omnia-T (but not sure - google is your friend). Also, Samsung are very prolific with firmware upgrades and being very aggresive at supporting the phone in this manner. Much more active than HTC have ever been and VERY quick to fix issues with new firmware. check out i900.modaco.com for more info.
The Omnia feels quite cheap, and is only so popular because a lot of people know Samsung.
The HTC's are by far the best.
The Xperia has a smaller screen, and a small keyboard.
The Pro is ofcourse very nice, but quite large around the waist. ;-)
Xperia has higher resolution and nicer screen.
I was doubting for a while too, but I've tested them all, and yesterday decided to buy the HD.
Omnia already had quite some problems, and the resolution of the Touch Pro is not suited for the future.
The Hd's 800*400-screen is unbelieveable.
That's right, go for HTC Touch HD.
Regards,
Carty..

Tested them all? I OWN a Touch Diamond (before that, TyTN and TyTN2 and BlueAngel) and EVERY HTC device I have ever had has had to be returned for physical failures at least once if not twice. Actually, thats a lie: the TD hasn't because I gave up with it after trying various diferent ROMs. This has now been refunded by the ebay seller as under UK law its "Not Fit For Purpose". (And the new euro constitution want's to get rid of our Sales of Goods Act - UK people, dont let them!!!)
The last phone I had between the tytn 2 and TD was a Tosh G900 and this was faultless - just like my I900 which is also FAULTLESS. The Omnia has some software issues to start with (Blank screen of death) but these were aggresivley fixed by Samsung, far quicker than HTC have ever done with any of there issues.
HTC devices are designed great but pi** poor manufacturing quality in my experience as can be seen from my history. I said once before that I would NEVER buy another HTC device and I didn't but then relented and purchased a TD .... only to be proved that I should never buy a HTC device.
btw, the first phone to have a 800*480 screen was the Tosh G900 .... been there, done that.... for well over a year. Well done HTC for catching up .... finaly
Before anyone shouts TomTom (at the Omnia) ... this has been proven by the guys on Modaco that this is a TomTom programing issue and not a Samsung problem. But then, this is also easily got around with GPSGate or similar.
I will point out though that if games are your choice, the Omnia is not the best choice as games often have hard coded screen resolutions and these won't work - again, maybe look for the 800x480 Omnia which is about to launch in Asia.
And finaly, Hands up all those that have 32gig in there phone......

AT&T not getting diamond, what about LG Insight?

I currently have an 8525 and am due to upgrade in a couple months. I admit I am very dissapointed that att isn't picking up the diamond. I like it. Moreover, I like how the site is full of cleaned up roms!! I never really liked my phone until I flashed my first rom and it sped up incredibly.
So, my question is this. I was looking at the LG insight and I kinda liked it. Does anyone know if there is a site for that phone that has roms?
I got over them not getting the diamond. I held hope for the Omnia. Now im just pissed. I think the Incite was a bad choice and I can only conclude they must have gotten it cheap compared to the omnia or diamond. I heard the GPS may not be working well too, I would have to confirm that.
The diamond or omnia are just so much better yet ATT goes with the incite? sigh.
I would google some reviews before you make a decesion.
I ended up with a treo pro in the end anyway. Its a compromise, keyboard but small screen.
AT&T got the raphael, bold, and the iphone. i'd say that's about as good a lineup you could ask for. just ask my fellow friends at tmobile and we'll say you're a bunch lucky ducks

I have an Incite. My observations:
1) screen is beautiful for a device that's not VGA - much sharper than the Tilt, and the Incite Today Screen plugin looks quite nice.
2) The jogwheel on the side is a nice feature.
3) I don't like the vibrate-touch feature, but it can be turned off.
4) Pandora is awesome, but AT&T wants to stick you for $8.95/mo on the Incite, where it is free on iPhone. Unfortunately, the Pandora.exe file won't display properly on either a Tilt or a Fuze, which brings up:
5) Many programs of standard dimensions (240x320), especially games, won't display properly. For instance, Battery Status options can't all be accessed.
6) GPS will not communicate with the iGuidance GPS software I use, although GPSTest works.
7) Using the landscape keyboard is nearly impossible because it takes up so much of the screen that only one line of type is visible. The Portrait SureType-style keyboard is fine.
8) The dialer is very good looking and easy to use.
All in all, a pretty good first WinMo offering from LG, IMHO, but not cutting-edge.
You could get an Unlocked Diamond and put your at&t sim card in it...
or just get the touch pro the thickness really isnt an issue
i came from an 8525 so much better and smaller

Okay Raph users.... what's next?

Hi guys!
Well, after four FUZE's.... for me, my partner, and two employees, it seems like it's time for an upgrade.
I've a blast with NATF's 4 series ROMS, and after about a year, I'm looking for a new device.
I noticed that the Touch Pro has the same CPU as our trusty Raphs, so I am not thrilled with that.
I find my device rather sluggish. It's not terrible, but... well... you know how it is!
So... Does anyone have any experience with a newer device? Maybe the Touch Pro 2 IS a big improvement (better resolution / tilt keyboard...), but it doesn't appear that way.
Thoughts are most definitely welcome.
I need to order another device, and right now, I just can't think of anything beyond yet another Fuze.
I'd love to hear what you guys have to say! I'm itching for a new device!
Thanks!
Mike
i don't find it that sluggish...
iPhone now? or the Palm Pre?
If your TP is sluggish, are you running the rom that came with the phone?
Mine was, until I discovered the cooked 6.5 roms back in May. I've flashed mine dozens of times. The 2303x builds are LIGHTNING fast, and depending on who you get it from, 99% of them are rock stable.
Pop over to the rom section, read the "flashing guide for Newbies" and then check out some of the great roms. These guys put in a LOT of time making the WM software better, and NO CARRIER BLOATWARE.

Get an iPhone. Duh!
On a serious note, it depends on whether you want to stay on the Windows Mobile platform or not, and whether you still want a physical keyboard or not. If you don't mind giving all touch-screen a try, then consider getting the Touch Pro HD (HTC Blackstone). I've heard great things about it, and it looks absolutely lovely. Otherwise, the only real upgrade path that I can think of is getting the Touch Pro 2 or similar.
It's really hard to upgrade when you're pretty much at the upper limit for smartphones. The Raphael is one of HTC's fastest devices, so keep that in mind.
My friend went from a Sprint Touch Pro (CDMA) to an Iphone 3G S 32GB... and he is a computer science grad student and a tech nerd... and he is blown away by the iphone. Yes Iphone OS is not like WM in functionality, but what the OS lacks, the apps make up for it. The Iphone is very stable, doesn't overheat (his doesn't), and is incredibly snappy. Plus its got a great screen, a built in ipod, etc. Just no insurance! =X And Apple control...
Hi guys!
First of all, allow me to clarify... I would 100% like to stay with a Windows Mobile phone, and second of all, I DEFINITELY need a slide out QWERTY keyboard.
And FYI.. I should have clarified... I am not a newbie! I have been hacking these phones and updating my ROMS for years now.
As I thought I mentioned, I have been flashing NATF's ROMS.
I started out with the CASIO BOSS in 1986, and as of late, I've had around six HTC phones, from the SX-66 to the 8125 to the 8525 to the FUZE, and so forth.
I don't know much about the iPhone 3GS, but I wrote a lengthy review of the 3G, and it just didn't suit my needs.
And like it or not, the FUZE is sluggish on my levels, even with the best ROMS. I don't think it's TERRIBLE, not at all, but let's face it... It's more like the feeling I get working off my modest Tablet PC on battery, than off my 4 monitored desktop's Quad Core Q9450 64Bit CPU, with 8 GB of RAM and 4TB on the hard drive.
There is just that little bit of 2008/2009 sluggishness that is making me a little eager and power hungry for a mind-blowing 2009/2010 device.
So, yeah, all this to say, I am not looking for an iPhone(!)
I am looking for a kick-ass Windows Mobile device that is the "next generation". The 8525 was an excellent jump from the 8125, which was an excellent jump from the SX66.
I am just looking for an equivalent jump, even if it's not made by HTC.
The FUZE/Touch Pro was THE must-have phone for all Hermes users.
I just needed a little guidance for the next one.
I am still looking for your suggestions! Thanks!
The TP2 has the best keyboard I've ever used on a phone. I've had the 8525, Tilt and Touch Pro (and a few others along the way). In fact, if I spend a few more days with it I may be faster with it than a desktop...it's really that good. As for performance, the AT&T version is excepted to come with 6.5 and 6.5 does run a lot better than 6.1 does in terms of speed but it's also a lot smoother overall and easier to use. It's probably 45 days off though if the rumors are right. The screen (a huge WVGA) feels a lot more sensitive. As far as speed, it is the same chipset and I've used both a Touch HD and a TP2 and it does feel faster but I think it's partially due to a mroe sensitive screen and people confuse that with the response time because the taps are easier to register. using TF3D you get your occasional hiccup. For my 2 cents I think when 6.5 comes out TF3D may not be as necessary but it's a personal preference. I hope TF3D 2.5 runs lighter since as a program it is pretty heavy in v2.1. All of this plays into 'speed'. In short though, the TP2 does feel like a pretty big upgrade over the TP(1). Again,t he screen size lets you see so much more that it simply puts it into another class. You can easily one hand emails with the onscreen keyboard and that works great for short responses but for large emails just open the keyboard and you feel like you have a minicomputer.
I've just purchased a TP2 to replace my TP1.
Same familiar WinMo, same massive repoistory of software, bigger screen, better keyboard. And it's not a piece of fruit
Thanks guys!
Very interesting praise for the TP2.
I had no idea the AT&T version was just around the corner. Good news.
bugsy, that is quite the glowing review. I was quite surprised to hear it had the same processor as the TP. I was hoping for a little boost!
Thanks again!
I just ordered one on ebay!
I know it's a little late, but have you considered symbian?
Nokia's got some really cool smart phones. The N97's bad ass!
Acer m900 until the USA compatible Omnia Pro shows up. Everything on the Acer is snappier than the Touch Pro, and probably what the older Wizard was like. Glad to be off the candy toy-phone the HTC made the Touch Pro into. Couldn't even do handwriting, nor using the VGA proper on a screen of that tiny size and the Qualcomm lag...
Both (m900, OmniaPro) still half as fast as the iPhone 3GS, but waiting for the 3GS to gain either cheap unlocked, or Palm Pre to go GSM. Nokia is still in some ditch thinking crap cpus can get them far.
Let us know how it turns out.

As the Raphael ages, What will be your next phone?

Still in love with my Touchpro, but as with all tech, I can watch it slow down with newer builds of 6.5. Its aging and I'm thinking of upgrading soon, but I want a phone I know the community is going to support the way we do with the TP.
The HTC Leo looks so sexy....but I'm having a lot of dreams about Android as well.
For me, I cant live without hardware keyboard and GPS, so TP2 is my next choice. If only Leo has hardware keyboard..hmmmm
I'll probably wait for the 3rd incarnation of the tP (TP3). I want that snapdragon processor!!!

I don't understand this. Touch Pro has the same processor and RAM as TP2, TD2, HD etc. In other words, it's the same phone, only resolution is different. Why do you think that for example TP2 is quicker? All specs are the same.
I'll be using a phone that doesn't exist now, but it will totally kick ass and iphone users will be really jealous.
Hate the hardware keyboard, extra bulk for me so....
AT&T Pure (TD2) enroute today!
One of the phones with the snapdragon or Tegra(?) chips.
I'm caught between the AT&T Pure (aka Topaz), cuz it is just so fine in the hand and has a beautiful screen and 5mp camera; the TP2 because of the keyboard; or wait for the HD2, cuz it's a capacitive screen, has a screaming processor, and 3.5mm earphone. It looks awesome!
I only find my Touch Pro faster with the latest WM6.5 builds. I initially wanted to purchase Diamond 2, so I went to the ATT store and checked it out.
IT does have a larger screen but the width of the screen is exactly the same as Fuze, so it doesn't improved the software keyboard since the area it takes up is exactly the same width wise.
And overall the Pure feels very much plasticy, and too light for my likings.
And the WM6.5 on Diamond 2 isn't even close to what the cooks have done for the Touch Pro, so I walked away empty handed.
Maybe I'll go back to the store when TP2 arrives, but I still think TP is a solid phone, I even like to use it more than my iphone 3g. (well my gf doesn't want to use the fuze, so that's the only choice I got =/
I will wait for the HD2
My next one is going to be HD2! Look at the video. It's really cool.
http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/htc-hd2-caught-on-video
I have another tab open right now, with an Acer F1 sitting in the basket for £338 - over £200 cheaper than the HD2's pre-order price from the same UK online retailer!
The only thing stopping me from pressing the 'checkout now' button is the lack of TouchFlo 3D and my uncertainty over whether anyone will develop it in the way I know the good folks here will look after the HD2. I'm so torn!!!!
Don't...know...what....to....do!
im just gona bide my time and w8 because just when i bought my tilt they came out with the fuze about 2 months L8r.... but i do have the fuze now so i will just w8 til my contract is up and see what is out then.... i love my fuze and i think its the best phone that they offer @ at&t prior to the release of the new tilt 2 and pure
I feel the same. Acer F1 looks great on specs, but the HD2 has both WM 6.5 and Touch flo.
Im going with the HD2, since theres always upgrades on XDA and WM 7.0 will show its furry little face in the Spring lol
whatever the next TP3 is - gotta have snapdragon/tegra, HD kb.
have been thinking about omnia2 qwerty...

+1 on this one. Why purchase an expensive device just for the larger screen with same specs. My only concern is that ATT may not offer it due to the direct competition to the iPhone (in regards of the HD2 at least). Though double dipping money with iPhone and WinMobile based device could just kill the last thought...
I'll wait for the 1 GHz device without any doubt.
So what are the options for someone on AT&T?
I want a new phone because my TP is falling apart. The keyboard doesn't respond well, some of the keys barely work, etc etc.
The TP2 simply isn't even an upgrade. It is amazing they are even calling it an "upgrade."
I've seen soooo many reviews(Engadget,Gizmodo) bashing WM 6.5. I haven't used Android or the iPhone, but these reviews must mean WM sucks compared to Android/et al.
So I'm thinking of getting an Android phone, or would love to try a WebOS phone, etc.
Are there any phones from Europe or other carriers that I might want to look for? Something that is an actual upgrade from the TP? Thanks guys!
@schwalbach
Touch HD aka Blackstone from down under perhaps (Telstra enabled for frequency match). But, again, same specs larger screen. Get a replacement or at least check how much it is and hold on a few more months until ATT or another US carrier announces snapdragon based phones. I could likely happen that they'll wait for MS to pair it with a WinMo 7 release (just a guess).
I messed around with a Touch Pro 2 the other day and I really liked it, but as has been pointed out, with the same chipset I'm not sure it's really worth the outlay, especially for someone who buys their handsets sim free. And they took away the handy 'torch' from the back. Cads.
Has anyone been to Qualcomm's website and seen the next Snapdragon with 1.5 Ghz cpu? Eeeek!
The trouble with waiting for the Touch Pro 3 is it's bound to be only 3mm thick, but the size of a coffee table ; )
If I can get over my current love of the Acer S200/F1 I may try and play with an Omnia Pro and see what that's like....
I just got my Fuze for my Bday a couple months back knowing that the Tilt 2 was coming. I still really like my Fuze, but I really like the Tilt 2, but I'd never get it because of the now mandatory data plans, which I'm thankful for getting my Fuze early enough. If I had my choice I'd jump ship on the next 2 generations after the Tilt 2 on AT&T, but those data plans are too expensive for me so I'll probably have to jump off my first WinMo device and go to Nokia for unlocked phones, unless HTC or someone starts selling unlocked WinMo/Android phones.Which I really hope someone starts doing, I'd really like to stick to WinMo.
