USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! G1 will take Nokia BL-5C battery - G1 Android Development

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
This might damage your phone or cause fire.
According to a forum in Chinese,G1 can use nokia BL-5C battery.
BL-5C is a bit narrower than the original battery, and the capacity is smaller( 1020 compare to 1150). But it is extremely cheap and easy to find, I even use it to replace the internal battery of palm t1.
It seems G1 would not charge those battery, so a Nokia desktop charger is needed。

I wouldn't trust those forums. lol. Using non-oem batteries, or batteries not specified for the phone is dangerous.

Just whipped the battery out of my works nokia with a BL-5CA battery in and it worked!
May come in handy as a spare while at work!

You did actually read the article right? The phone didn't explode he shot himself with a home-made gun.

yes, the 5C and 5CA batteries work as well as a few others, we had a thread about this in accesories, i would suggest that this only be used in an emergency like if you are stranded and the original battery is dead. i carry my 5CA in my car just in case i ever NEED to make that emergency phone call i have the ability. yes things can go wrong, but if you only use it in an emergency then you should be fine. ALSO do not try and charge the spare while it is inside the phone, i would bet my phone that once in a while the battery overcharges and can eat the phone.

why?
why would anyone want a spare battery thats possibly dangerous to use in your g1 and not only that, it also has a lower power capacity? as if the g1 battery doesnt suck enough keep a spare one with less power?!? my 2 cents

Because G1 batteries are a complete ripoff at their current prices, and these are not.

I once bought a desktop charger/dock for an old Nokia phone (8260 or something like that). The phone was fine but the spare battery that I had swelled like a balloon and smelled like melting plastic. Definitly not good. Obviously I threw out the desktop charger and spare battery. But ever since then I've been hesitant to buy anything but OEM.

You can buy G1 batteries for $6 on ebay which includes FREE shipping.
I hardly call $6 a ripoff or expensive.
Here is 2 for $11 - free shipping -

Where are you getting your prices from?

T-Mobile replaces battery's and tells you to throw the damaged one out who's to say it was really damaged I called them and I now have a spare.

lol did you read the article, the phone exploded in his 'breast' pocket as the asians call it, and it exploded, acting like a home-adme gun.. but it was really just the phone/battery combo, and as stated in the article there were other similar cases

non-oem battery
I have had the g1 since Nov, with a non-oem battery, 1600mAh and have not had any issues yet (knock on wood).

The phone did not "explode" and kill the man. He made a homemade gun which they found next to him with 9 bullets...it went of accidently and hit him in the breast pocket which created the shrapnel that killed him.
Oh and here is the headline...obviously you didn't read the update to the original article that was listed below the pic. Here is the title...
"Man 'killed by exploding phone' shot himself"
Actually here is the article since you had trouble las time around
"Doctors who rushed to the scene of the explosion at a computer salesroom in Guangzhou, north of Hong Kong in southern China, found the man, named as Huang Heping, lying on the floor with a severed artery in his neck.
They found shattered fragments of his mobile phone, which had been in a top pocket, leading to suggestions that its lithium battery had exploded.
Exploding mobile phone batteries have been implicated in previous deaths and injuries, leading to safety advice being published on how to prevent accidents.
But this incident raised doubts, as batteries only overheat when they are being charged or used for long periods, not while they are sitting unused in pockets.
Now police sources have told local newspapers that the mobile phone was an innocent victim in the case. At first, it seemed as if the man was carrying some sort of homemade explosive, traces of which were found on his body.
Further examination at the scene discovered the remnants of what appeared to be a home-made firing device, with nine bullets in a separate bag.
They say they believe the gun went off accidentally after Huang, dropped it, killing him with a single shot to the neck. The phone was also broken, leading to the initial theory which came from those first on the scene.
The original report caused widespread consternation in China, which is in the middle of a panic about "shanzhai" or fake goods. Since the tainted milk scandal which killed at least six babies last year, fake medicines and medical equipment as well as other theoretically less dangerous products have been exposed.
It was feared that the Guangzhou incident might be just the first in a rash of fake battery explosions.
Police have not said why Huang, 45, might have been carrying a home-made gun.
But Guangzhou and its neighbour Shenzhen have notoriously high crime rates for China, and warnings have been sent out that this might get worse in the wake of the economic crisis. The region has lost hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of jobs in the last few months."
Cell phones batteries can be dangerous but I've seen them explode and you might get burned....chances of dying are slim unless you are built like a wet noodle.

JAPOD battery

I bought this battery:
http://www.dinodirect.com/htc-liion-battery-1400mah-rechargeable-japod-bb99100-g5-g7-desire.html
and it arrived today, shipped from Hong Kong. It looks remarkably similar to the real N1 battery from HTC. The only differences I can see:
- says HTC instead of HTC Innovation
- Part number on the back is 35H00132-05M instead of 35H00132-00M
All of the other text and symbols are identical. So is this just a really convincing counterfeit?
I've charged it up but I haven't given it a first use yet.
Of course it's fake.

Are you trying to suggest I should be careful because the battery might explode?
I guess I'm of two minds about this - on one hand it's a pretty convincing fake, on the other hand I'd rather they be honest about who they are on the casing of the battery.
I've also heard that some fake electronics are basically produced in the same factory but on a different company's time.
I gave the battery its first full discharge/recharge today. Nothing specific to report, other than the fact that when the phone got warm playing Angry Birds while plugged into an outlet, I later removed the battery and found that the "new battery plastic" smell was particularly strong. Hrm...
Anyway it was cheap, and I also have another spare battery from Momax that actually *does* admit to not being from HTC.
Just a follow up... the Momax battery from NCIX is far superior to the Japod battery from DinoDirect. I tried to submit an honest review of the Japod battery to DinoDirect and they rejected it. I have no intentions of conducting business with this company again. Fortunately it was a cheap lesson.

Hong Kong eBay sellers for batteries

I was looking to purchase the 2 batteries plus charger for around 10 bux or so on ebay, but there are a variety of sellers, If you made this purchase who was your seller and what was the experience in terms of both shipping time and quality of the batteries? there is one seller on there that shows pictures of the batteries that says its "made in japan/finished in china", wonder if thats a better battery? Thanks!

I have two from spider foot they don't last as long as the oem. Good for backup though.
I just got my order from spiderfoot yesterday. It was 11.99 for two batts and charger plus usb cord and car charger. I ordered on the 28th of Dec so that's what, about 13 days? Not too bad for snail mail I suppose. I got one charged up before work yesterday and it lasted 6+ hours with fairly heavy use, I have a boring job at times. The other one I charged last night has 51% left and has been running my phone since around midnite, moderate use(I do sleep!). Bottom line for me is I now have three batteries and a way to charge them outside the phone so having three charged overnite isn't a hassle. What do you want for 11.99 anyway? Lastly, the charger gets them to 100% unlike the screwy samsung charging system or code...finally full batteries again! Like I said before, what do you want for 11.99?

Kinda reminds me of a $20 dollar hooker. You got the clap. You get what you pay for. Why do you think it was so cheap?
You save money by buying a cheapass battery from someone in china. You know how much they cut corners to maximize profit? Don't cry when a lithium ion battery explodes or catches fire in your pocket. Even the chinese living in america know better than to buy stuff made in china. They know it's crap. I work with them, I see it all the time.

Last time I think I found someone who imported them from China and sold them on ebay for a couple of extra dollars, so it was basically the same. I've done this for numerous phones (just neurotic if not a bad battery) and I have never had a problem. I WILL say that the generics don't always seem to last as long (maybe not on first charge but they may die quicker) than the OEM one I got, but I also got an OEM off Ebay that was DOA so go figure.
As for blowing up in your pocket....I'd be more afraid of dying quickly etc. I doubt it will blow up, link please
went ahead and purchased from spider-foot, so far no explosion lol, can't complain for 11 bux...thanks

This seems totally fake.
Googling will get you a few discussions on this battery, but the following image should confirm all suspicions.
http://img109.imageshack.us/i/20100708029.jpg/
For this one (1930mAh) it is only 750mAh....
well, i think this is fake and i don't think this is made in Japan, but in mainland china
I'm about 400% sure it is a piece of ****. Unless they are selling some amazing new high density cell technology for only ten quid. If so we need to thank them for not seeking to profit from their industry changing discovery.

its not a gold like metal battery, lol. its just a normal battery wrap in gold sticker.
mmmmm, gold stickers also increase the CPU speed. lol
that really funny.....
I never tried, but look at the cell type Li-Ion Polymer IMHO it's somehow realistic. Maybe not as their ads 2430mAh but somewhere between 1230 and that value. Then 20 bucks is worth to try, any one brave enough to try and report?
You can check the seller's recent feedback and see if anyone bought any from them.
I mean there shouldn't be any harm, its just a battery. Its not like buying an adapter charger, in case of wrong voltage which will fry ur phone.
now, I'm no expert (and there is no end of websites run by battery experts), but there is a limitation as to how many mah can fit into a certain space.
That is, the OEM battery size gives a certain output, and you can probably get a bit more in the same form factor.
But not double Simply don't believe the bull**** out there. Whether it's chinese, japanese, gold or silver.
Older teminal designs allowed manufacturers to market physically bigger batteries with a custom cover, of course that is not an option here.
I am quite happy as long as I can get a day out of the phone, charging overnight.
If you want a 11,000 mah battery, look here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Largest-Capacity-In-The-World+1-AMP-Faster-Charging/dp/B004CHMP50/
There you go, your phone will run forever with that baby hooked up to it.
I bought a 5000 mah pack for about 2/3 the price, mainly since I want to be using the gps for tracking (and being tracked) purposes while out in the country on my mountain bike. Works very well, it's not heavy, it's a bit like having another small phone with you
Its quite likely that most manufacturing overstate the specification, which is a common thing really, not just battery, broadband, harddrive, etc. They always claim it has more then what it actually has.
But on the other hand, I wouldn't go so far calling it a fake, since japs does always paint something gold or silver to suggest higher quality stuff. Because when I was a kid living in asia, I buy a lot of radio control cars from japan and their expensive parts like battery, motors, always has something gold or silver attach to it
Has anyone ever got a decent battery from eBay?
I have been looking and I see a lot of 1500 mah ... but then if you read the fine print they say 1500 mah (+/- 200 mah) which admits that it is just another 1300 mah knock off. How can a legitimate battery be + or - 200 mah...
To bad the battery's coming from Japan are crap.
You want battery's from Hongkong, those are way better.
Anyway i bought a replacement/2nd battery wich had 1600mAh.
But after 2 weeks it wasnt as good as the stock battery wich let me use my phone all day and the 1600mAh one didnt.

Precisely. tbh, I understand we'd all like to believe there are miracle solutions to this, but equally we should understand that this miracle is not going to come from an ebay seller
However few dollars a cheap battery costs you, it ain't much use if it's going to fail after a few hours. And the hassle linked with keeping replacement batteries charged is not worth it either. I had a spare OEM battery for my previous phone, and I got fed up of keeping it ready.
3 solutions:
1) strategies to minimise power consumption (loads of suggestions in this sub-forum)
2) keep it topped up during the day if you're at home/office
3) get an external power pack as I mentioned above, 5000mah variants are (were) GBP23 on Amazon.

On extended batteries...

Hi all, just stopping in for a bit with some information pertaining to extended batteries.
Most, if not all extended batteries made for the Infuse were made when the phone was first introduced over 2.5 years ago. That being said, understand that Li-Ion batteries do have a shelf life not unlike that of alkaline batteries in the sense that their useful life gets shorter over time. Li-ion batteries come from the factory with a full charge in preparation for the perceived storage time, and will usually be sold before the end of their useful life cycle. Most times this is around 3 years.
See where this is going?
If the extended batteries were made when our phone was introduced, and our phone is now around 2.5 years old, AND Li-Ion batteries only have around a 3 year shelf life, what's to say were not being sold junk when we buy an extended battery from an online auction site?
I've had good experiences and bad ones with buying extended batteries online, and most vendors are willing to work with you in the event of a failed battery, but you will notice that less and less of these extended batteries will be offered for sale, and the ones that are will be nearly brand new with a hefty price tag to boot.

My thinking exactly, didn't know if it was legitimate though, and I was only guessing at approximate shelf life so thanks Pox for confirmation! I ordered a new battery just yesterday!
Only 1800 mAh though. I'm only trying to see if it's the infamous power button issue or not that's causing shut downs and I need to rule out a faulty battery (currently running some cheap 1450 mAh $5 battery from cellphoneshop.net, first and last time I get that one) as an issue.
I generally found that every extended beyond 2100 mAh requires a new back, making the phone thicker and therefore incompatible with most cases.
Well, as to prove a point and make me look foolish, the extended battery in my gfs Infuse decided it was time to let out the magic smoke just last night.
It erupted with enough force to crack the screen from the inside (outer screen is undamaged) and got hot enough to melt the sim card to the socket!
I will be taking pictures as I would like to try to get the seller of the battery to either replace or repair the phone. If not I'll be seeking another Infuse...

I don't think it's beyond repair, but to be honest I don't think it's worth the effort.
It does boot with nothing on the screen but a screen to fit this phone is actually more than I can get the phone for.
I was able to boot the phone and extract the over 8gig of pics and various other stuff, now the phone is sitting in waiting for Samsung or the seller of the defective battery to get back to me about a possible replacement.

Double the capacity too, and it works like a dream. Used it with no issues on Nexus devices, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note, Nokia Lumias. Charging efficient seems pretty good too, with no excessive heating.
All QiPack did was to make theirs look like a *spit* iPhone *spit*. I wouldn't be shocked to see Apple sue them for copyright infringement

hmm
what would be better, in my opinion, is if someone could develop a kinetic charging system that worked with the wireless charging receivers on devices.....as in, movement creates a charge that is stored in capacitors and transmitted to the charging receiver once a certain voltage/current level is reached....therefore keeping the phone at 100% for as long as the person/phone is moving.

Yup, this one is something that probably falls under as abusing kickstarter. The video is neat and all, but it's not a difficult project. Or this great idea. You can buy a Qi Charger off aliexpress and solder a 3.7v battery it it, then stuff it back inside the case and you have the same thing. You can buy the PCB itself and an old battery and make your own housing.
I'm sure if you look hard enough, it's already available too.

Apparently, kickstarter is lacking during these few years, this isn't the first project, i've seen many project abusing the system, there is no way to complaint unless you register, which I don't have the intention to.
