Frames in mobile browsers - General Questions and Answers

Good arvo to all,
what browser would be best for displaying pages with (excessivly) large amounts of frames?
my uni online course website (managed by WebCT if anyone knows it) doesnt load in IE as it has more than 30 frames per page - i hope this is fixed in IE6 and that someone makes a tidy 6.5 rom for hermes with it.
the whole system is a dog, and i hate lugging my laptop to uni, and i never keep on top of when they update the notes, so i like to be able to download them in lectures. (storage isnt an issue with sdhc, 8gb is more than plenty when you have an ipod as well).
Help would be great.
CHeers.

Qtek S100 Internal Memory Upgrade

Does anyone did a internal memory upgrade to 128mb in the Qtek S100? Where? Is it worth the price?
Thanks!!!
It's awesome ... 57Mb internal RAM is simply not enough. After the 128Mb upgrade, I did not have to select what to install in RAM anymore, and everything runs more smoothly than it did in 64Mb (I have an upgraded i-Mate Jam)

where did you upgrade your i-Mate? Just curious.. 8)
What exactly are you using all that RAM for? I've installed all I need, and I have plenty of space left.
Hi,
How can I upgrade my ram? Is it possible to use parts of other pocket pc's? I have a Qtek2020 which I could use for parts... (it's screen is broken)...
Thanks,
JeDa
Mine was upgraded by www.ppctechs.com. I have a requirement for the following programs to reside in RAM, since about 3 hours of my working day are spent connecting to the corporate Lan with a wireless SD card. One look at the list should indicate that I mostly use my PPC professionally.
TimeTTracker
Tekstmaker
Planmaker
KSE Truefax
PocketPlan
Citrix Client
VNC Client
Terminal Services client
TomTom
Adobe Acrobat
PocketLauncher
Peacemaker
Commontime mNotes
PIToday
Hudson Phonedashboard
PocketZenPhone
Tube PRO London and Paris
Pocket InformantSprite Backup
SPB PocketPlus
SPB GPRS Monitor
TimeTTracker
Looks really powerful! I might check this out!
Tekstmaker
Planmaker
Looks good, really good. But if you're at your own premises (like you said) you might as well use the real thing on a full size computer with a full size keyboard to save some time.
KSE Truefax
Why? You must have fax machines at your company?
PocketPlan
Useful if you have project plans allocating your time on an hourly basis, if not - why do you need it in your pocket?
Citrix Client
VNC Client
Terminal Services client
All three of them? You should have your company selecting a standard environment. And WTS client is in ROM so that does not really count as something requireing space on your device.
TomTom
For navigating the corridors?
Adobe Acrobat
Reader or writer? At least on the QtekS100 there is an acrobat reader included in the ROM.
PocketLauncher
With SPB PocketPlus, why do you need this?
Peacemaker
Why exactly do you need this if you're connected to the WLAN?
Commontime mNotes
I guess if you're stuck with Notes you're stuck with this.
PIToday
Something like this should really be standard, but I personally prefer tAgenda. And does PIToday work with mNotes?
Hudson Phonedashboard
You have a company phone, right? So why bother?
PocketZenPhone
Nice one. But not really useful until I can use the volume slider to pick between different profiles.
Tube PRO London and Paris
Beutiful!
Pocket Informant
Does this work with mNotes or is it just a "nice to have"?
Sprite Backup
Is this really necessary? If you syncronize with your server using mNotes it seems a bit overdoing it.
SPB PocketPlus
This should be on every PPC!
SPB GPRS Monitor
Again, why? I used it for the trial period to find out roughly how much I was spending, but now I just don't bother. If I don't need to know I don't want to know.

Tekstmaker

It's mainly for reference purposes during meetings. The sheets I work with sometimes lose formulas in the translation to Pocket Excel
KSE Truefax
Why? You must have fax machines at your company?
Yes, but some faxes I receive are confidential
PocketPlan
Useful if you have project plans allocating your time on an hourly basis, if not - why do you need it in your pocket?
I have project managers in my staff, and need to able to see impact of changes in resource allocation, time frame changes, delivery delays during meetings in which we discuss these
Citrix Client
VNC Client
Terminal Services client
All three of them? You should have your company selecting a standard environment. And WTS client is in ROM so that does not really count as something requireing space on your device.
My company has a standard environment. Our customers usually do not.
TomTom
For navigating the corridors?
For getting to my office Actually I travel a lot by car, both for work and private.
Adobe Acrobat
Reader or writer? At least on the QtekS100 there is an acrobat reader included in the ROM.
Reader, and it's better than the westtek one, period.
PocketLauncher
With SPB PocketPlus, why do you need this?
I like tabbed menus better full screen than on the today screen. I do use pocketPlus, but only one single line for the key programs. The rest are organized in Pocket Launcher
Peacemaker
Why exactly do you need this if you're connected to the WLAN?
Peacemaker helps me exchange appoinments with people who have PalmOS (quite a few among my customers do)
Commontime mNotes
I guess if you're stuck with Notes you're stuck with this.
Yep
PIToday
Something like this should really be standard, but I personally prefer tAgenda. And does PIToday work with mNotes?
That's the fun of it. Regardles of what you use, all appointments go into the pocketpc underlying database. All PIMs are nothing but frontends in front of that same database. PIToday provides the list on the today screen, pocket informant gives me a more complete and detailed view when actually planning, and mNotes synchronizes that same underlying database with Lotus Notes.
Hudson Phonedashboard
You have a company phone, right? So why bother?
No, the PDA is private but I use it for work. The phone part contains my private number. I also have a company phone, but that is a phone only.
PocketZenPhone
Nice one. But not really useful until I can use the volume slider to pick between different profiles.
useful enough for me though
Tube PRO London and Paris

Pocket Informant
Does this work with mNotes or is it just a "nice to have"?
As with PIToday above. PIToday is only a today plugin, Pocket Informant is the real PIM, and yes, Pocket Informant Rocks!! (and mNotes synchronizes my data from Lotus Notes to the PPC Database, so yes, for use with Pocket Informant.
Sprite Backup
Is this really necessary? If you syncronize with your server using mNotes it seems a bit overdoing it.
Yes, it is neccessary. A PPC usulaly not only contains data that can be synchronized with the desktop, but also license files, configuration files, favourite settings etc. Besides, PPCs do crash, and having a self extracting backup handy on a memory card gets you up and runnign in 30 seconds, back to the state your machine was in before the crash.
SPB PocketPlus
This should be on every PPC!
Indeed.

I need to know, since it's my private subscription. Aside from this, quite a few companies allow you to use a company phone, but with a quota above which one has to prove the calls are buisiness related, so yes, tracking calls may actually be of importance for more people than you would imagine.
Of course, the reply above was mine. Forgot to log in ...

Ok, I wont quote the long text
Although I would have chosen to carry a small laptop for some of the tasks I agree that if you don't you probably need most of the software you listed.
To Wiz:
With all those application running, How is the battery life on 128MB ?
thank you
As far as I can tell, battery life is roughly the same with 128Mb installed, maybe slightly better even since I do not have to start programs from SD anymore.
how much memory now is free after a hard reset?

UpToDate App: Speeding up the turtle of all turtles

Hey everyone,
Does anyone use an application called "UpToDate?" It's basically a huge medical textbook for physicians to look up stuff when they get stuck.
I noticed that it takes a little while to load (although I admit it's faster than the online version)... I was always wondering if there was a way to make the initial load even faster on WM5/6 devices. I found myself using apps like Skyscape less often after falling prey to this mighty application...
I've tried UpToDate using multiple Pocket PCs and ROMs. The best time I have so far on a WM5/6 device is 6 seconds, using an iPAQ hx4700 with one of Sanjay's/PDAViet's/Kozhura's WM6.1 ROMs.
My xv6800 (HTC Titan) takes 8 seconds and I get 9 seconds with a WM6 xv6700 (HTC Apache) at 520 MHz.
Maybe I'm being too obsessive about this. The way the WM version of UpToDate works is weird... It uses Sentry 2020 to extract some gigantic .RAW files into "virtual" SD cards. If there's any way I can permanently force this extraction process ahead of time, I'm sure that this app will load much faster. I'm wondering if a lot of physicans/med students are also thinking along the same lines as I am.
If anyone has tried any extreme, chaotic measures with this application and WM5/6, I'm all ears. If not, then I'll just leave it running in the background. Or perhaps I can put it on a RAM drive? That might be difficult because the installation process dumps files into the Windows directory, too.
I'm guessing that UpToDate was probably designed for WM2003 but was never optimized to match the ROM-based system of WM5/6. Oh well, if you feel like talking about this app, please fire away. Thanks again to Rudegar and demstav for shedding some light on this earlier on. And of course, a big thanks to all of you at XDA Devs because you all simply rock

The best pocketable laptop replacement

I am looking to upgrade my phone with something just a bit better, but I want to make sure I am upgrading, not losing out on features. So first I need a phone that has all of the same features but more.
I use my phone in lieu of a laptop on trips, as I am often in a situation where carrying a laptop is impractical, and I need something that can be shoved into a pocket at a moments notice.
Here are the features I have currently and I want in my new phone:
1. A Great Phone
This is by far the most important thing. A phone that has loud and clear voice quality, great reception, and picks up voice well. My phone currently I can use in the middle of a loud nightclub underground and still be able to have a conversation and great reception. This rules out the iPhone already.
2. Outlook 2007 Integration (or Outlook 2007 killer software integration)
This includes push email, desktop synced email, contacts with all fields, tasks, calendar and notes. I need them all.
3. Internet friendly
I use the internet constantly on my phone, browsing all day. I use Opera Mobile software, and it works great, even with tabs! Wether it is GPRS, EDGE or 3G, I can connectification.
4. Multimedia friendly
Windows media player converts and copies all the videos and music I want automatically and provides many great options for shuffling the music on the player automagically. I also use TCPMP for divx and youtube videos and the like with no problems.
5. Bluetooth A2DP
I swear by my stereo headset. I have no used a wired one in so long. Listening to music, wathcing videos and having phone conversations is so much easier with A2DP. This rules out the iPhone again.
6. Large capacity/storage cards
Currently 8GB microsd cards are avaliable for my phone, with a theoretical limit of 32GB.
7. Instant messengers
I use MSN, QQ, Skype and others on my phone. It is nice to be connected.
8. Wifi
for those times when 3g just aint enough.
9. Hardware keyboard
I message a LOT, so I need a device that caters to this. No onscreen keyboard can match the usability of a hardware keyboard (in my and most people's opinion)
10. Pocketable
This has to fit in my pocket easily. PReferably a suit inside pocket. My current phone is about 14mm thick and about 3.5 inches diagonal... smaller than many less functional phones.
11. Chinese/Asian language input
Perhaps this is just for me, but it an essential for me to be able to communicate in Chinese.
12. All the little things
All the little things that make the user experience better
- threaded sms
- autocomplete names, emails, numbers
- predictive phrases (not only words, the phone predicts sentence patterns as well)
- calling card support (adding prefixes, dialing predetermined numbers automatically)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things I want in my NEW phone that my current phone lacks:
1. Speed
My phone slows to a crawl when I am doing too many things at the same time.
2. Bigger screen (3 inch+)
Watching videos on a 2.8 inch screen is fine, albeit too small. My eyes get tired after a while. Extra screen real estate would be better for surfiung the web as well.
3. GPS
Google maps is functional, but can only now give me a location based on my nearest cell. true GPS location finding would be a huge advantage, as I am often searching for locations.
So after all that, does anyone have any sugesstions on the perfect phone?
why not try a x7510 ?

Anotehr vote for the Universal. IMHO it's better than the Advantage - and MUCH cheaper!
The Universal definitely does look like a great choice, the only thing would be it's lack of GPS and perhaps it is a tad bulky to have in a jeans pocket. Otherwise, I agree, the Universal seems like a top contender. What is the successor to the Universal?
Is is possible to upgrade the Universal with WinMo 6.1 and TouchFLO?
Also, I was leaning towards the HTC Raphael (Diamond Touch Pro), but the small screen still is a bit annoying... just a half inch more and I'd be happy.

Video of a page loading on Opera?

Does anyone have a video of a Fuze loading a relatively complicated page such as CNET.com, Ign.com, or Engadget.com on ATT's 3G or Hsdpa network? I just want to compare the loading times compared to my own fuze thanks..
is yours slow on the net? cause mine is painfully slow. my old tmo wing is faster, easy.
I could make a video of my Fuze loading Engadget but I use MyMobile software for screencaps/videos and it limits FPS so you can't get a true recording of its speed. Engadget loads fairly quick on ATT 3G HSxPA, using Opera 2808 on a cooked ROM.
I guess you're looking for a recording by a separate camera?
As long as its not fast fowarded or skipped its not important how it was recorded
Opera simply SUCKS! Such an awful internet experience.. Especially when you scroll, you can hit accidentaly links and you just don't know about it .. another annoying thing is the focus losing when draggin while the page is still loading.
Bleah.. opera is just an over-hyped piece of crap. (i really wanted to say nice words about opera.. but I really can't)
Try Opera Mini on large sites, way better..
If you want, I can record you a video but I'm using Orange 3G and I'm from Romania.
I was playing around with the ol' tilt and decided to check out the internet speed and the difference was dramatic. It took my tilt less than half the time to load a page than my fuze. I used activesync to connect to the internet on both the phones.
The version of Opera on my Tilt just seemed faster in every way (loading pages, opening up the favorites, scrolling through them) I think that the VGA version of Opera is just poorly written. Unless maybe, the Fuze has bigger problems than just GPS lag....
Slightly off topic but one really frustratingly big thing that annoys me about Opera Mobile 9.5 is that it does not remember page scroll positions in its history and *especially* when opening new pages. For example, when you open a link that is down the bottom of the page, the new page will open scrolled down relative to the bottom - what use is that? Same things occurs when going through the page history - it doesn't remember where you were on a previous page and uses the last scroll position. I just can't understand how that can be classed as a usable feature? Apart from that major frustrating annoyance, I don't mind it as a mobile browser, as I really like the fullscreen mode.
Off topic I know but it is a big consideration when choosing Opera Mobile.
Opera-mini IS much faster than 9.5. Skyfire loads much faster (but is very rough looking) than 9.5 also, on my Fuze anyway.
Glad to see this post. I was wondering if it was my phone.

Picked up a sprint Snap/HTC Cedar last night at Best Buy first thoughts.

I don't think the BB Mobile rep was supposed to let me get it yet as I thought it and the pre were due out on the same day? Of course, she was sweet and cute, but not very knowledgeable anyhow so it all worked out for me.
My HTC S511 came with Qualcomm 7625 528MHz processor. 192 MB of RAM with 80 MB for os as well as 256 MB of Flash memory of which the os takes up 160 MB. Software wise it ships with ROM version 1.14.651.1 dated 4/15/09 and radio version 1.25.05F. PRL version 60652 and PRI version 1.29_003.
Seems like a newer slimmer & lighter version of the Motorola q9c (which I also have on another line) except made by HTC with a 2mp camera. Not even close to the touch or mogul I also have so I will not even bother to compare it to either, but rather to it's closest match that I have experience with. I have pics of all these phones together, but no clue how to get them on here.
Keypad buttons seem a little wobbly but easy to use even for my big paws. Still playing with it trying to see if I like it or not. It feels better in my hand then the q9c and better suited to right handed use. Camera is alright, but no flash. Everything is pretty easy to find, especially if you are q9c friendly. Has MS Office instead of Documents to Go, but I can't seem to open word on it's own without a file already there to open. MicroSD card is protected under battery cover, which is kinda nice if it included a card that is. Includes 3 games Bubble Breaker, Solitaire and Wheel of Fortune. Also here is a quick list of included gadgets/software read from the bottom up on my phone:
YouTube
Voice Recorder
Video Recorder
Streaming Media
Sprint TV (Speaker is very loud though tinny)
Sprint Nav
Speed Dial
Software Store
RSS Hub
Remote Desktop
QuickGPS
NFL Mobile Live
NASCAR
Music
MP3 Trimmer (very nice for custom ringtones)
Messenger (Live) redundant?
Live Search
Instant Messaging (AIM, Live, Yahoo)
Inner Circle
HTC Mobile Guide
Google (not compatible with gmail mobile which makes me think no java support)
File Explorer
Comm Manager (Airplane Mode, Phone, Bluetooth, MS Direct Push, Data Connection) no wifi
Clock & Alarm
Camera (pretty nice and can send via email right from app)
Bluetooth Explorer
Audio Booster
Album
Adobe Reader LE
Internet Sharing
Accessories
Getting Started
Pictures & Videos
Voice Notes
Games
Call History
Windows Live
Voice Command
ActiveSync
Office Mobile
Windows Media
Tasks
Internet Explorer
Settings
Contacts
Calendar
Messaging
Overall, I must say it is much more polished than my q9c and not bad for $149 with new line contract. Too soon to say anything about battery life yet, however it is still running on the initial factory charge and only dropped from 3/4 to 1/2 in 20 hours of being on and mildly used. Data is typical HTC fast and should make it a good pants pocket phone for me instead of jeopardizing my now aging and harder to replace mogul/titan. This is good for me especially since my q9c seems to have forgotten how to shut off it's display of late.
Yes this Phone is very cool
I've got the old T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) and was wondering if the screen readability in sunlight has been improved?
I've always been upset that I can't seem to read the screen at all when I'm outside and the sun is shining. I've noticed that friends with blackberrys and iPhones don't seem to have the same problem.
