looking for information on the bootloaders - General Questions and Answers

I have searched and searched and searched. Maybe I am just retarded, but would anyone be able to point me to a good starting point on were to learn how to mess with and develop an hspl. I ask for this knowing fully that I stand a GREAT chance of bricking my device. but the programmer in me really wants to learn how these phones really work. I have a cdma touch pro, but any generic information on were to get started would be highly appreciated.

Hard SPL's are the easy (easier) part per say. The SoftSPL's are the bastards. Checkout the SPL Questions page on the wiki for what the differences are.
Pof explains what you have to patch to get a HardSPL working here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
What you have to patch on the SoftSPL, I'm not 100%, but CID / signing checks are a must. Have a read of the SSPL / Jump SPL posts for more details.
To do the work, you'll need A Disassembler (IDAPro), a HexEditor to patch it and Knowledge of ARM ASM (I only have the first 2, and a few 100 page PDF on the latter )
As you can see in my Sig I have made a 3.34 version of the Kaiser Hard SPL, but I owe all my working to cmonex. I just copied and pasted her patches over the stock SPL
Thanks
Dave

Thank you verry much! I actually have the ida pro, just have to figure out how to work some of the source. its funny I thought C was challenging at times until I started looking through arm assembler, its like the difference between learning Spanish, and mandarin.

Thank you for the link
somwone know if is needed to make an hard spl on HP 614c ???
So, when will there be one build for the touch pro2?
There is alot of crap in this os that i would like to get fixed. perhaps win 6.5 will be better, but still not as good as what a few geeks can make.
side note, pretty sad a few geeks can build a better rom than the biggest company in the world.

Here is one for the Rhodium,.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131
The " geeks " here only have to keep a few " hardcore enthusiasts " happy, and if they don't like the rom that you cooked, tough s##t use someone else's rom. image all the compromises you need to make to keep a million casual users happy.
Well once i learn enough about how to do it. ill probably just make my own rom. unless I find one that is really good.
First i need to learn the proccess and see if its even possible yet with a pro2.
tho the new os is comming out in 2 weeks for sprint.

i think this question is already answered on previous post above.
but in a short sentence, most people do hardSPL before flashing Rom.
for what? of course to avoid device brick.
related to your experience, that's only a lucky shot but not in a safely manner.

Hard SPL questions
After i do a hard SPL, and install a wm 6.5 rom build 23060
say i dont like the ROM, can i always flash back to original 6.1?
or will the hard SPL I made on my xperia prevent that?
you can always go back to the origninal rom, you just simply have to find the rom. itl be available on here or ppcgeeks somewhere.
there is also a tool to UN Hard spl. you mainly use it if you need to send yoru phoen back to your carrier for replacement.
effect of Hard-SPL
Does installing Hard-SPL erase everything on the phone?
I'm trying to get myself to the point of not being terrified to try this.
I know the forums aren't for psychotherapy, but after spending $300 on a device, I do NOT want to render it unusable....help?!?!
Hi,
since the wiki page doesn't work, can someone explain what "hardspl" is?
Please.
Thank you.
Why should I do it?
What benefits can I get from "hard spl" ing my Tilt 2 (ATT) Rhodium 300?
I've run crud scraper and free'd up some space, ok. It doesn't run faster..?
I'd like to know what's the purpose of "hard spl".
Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I'm just that. IGNORANT of why, not stupid.
LOL
ps.........I hate the freeking ATT background images.

Can I use 6.1 ROMs on my Kaiser?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I can use the 6.1 ROMs on my Kaiser or am I limited to 6.0 ROMs?
I tried to download the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade from HTC but when I enter my Serial No. it says its unsuitable for my phone.
I bought it on ebay and its full of rubbish and seems heavily tampered and has lots of querky things going on - so I thought I would just flash it with one of your ROMs. I don't want to 'brick' it if 6.1 is incompatible. I have spent days reading the (astoundingly detailed) FAQ's but, maybe 'cos I'm dumb and don't understand the difference between ROM and OS, I'm worried I will trash the phone if HTC say its incompatible.
I'm rambling now because what I don't really know is whether A ROM includes OS or sits on top of OS.
Regards,
JN
You can, of course, use 6.1 roms on your kaiser. I suggest you just go to the kaiser section, read a bit, and find yourself a nice ROM.. the kaiser section is flooded with ROMs.. and good ones
Thanks for replying. I found several posts today from people who have trouble with screen touch alignment and wondered if there was a hardware incompatibility with some Kaiser's and WM 6.1. Also, I found the answer to my question about ROMs and OS in Q1 of the Kaiser ROM Flashing FAQ which I had already read but obviously not taken in.
I shall give one a try then.
Many thanks,
I'd suggest giving a few.. until you get it right
LOL
Ok then. What are the chances of totalling the phone? Mind You, I've got to the point where if I junk it I won't care too much. So I shall just have some fun.
Thanks for the reassurance and advice.
You should be able to hard reset if everything fails...which should save you in the worst case situation... I beleive though from reading up on it if you unlock your phone with HARDSPL it is supposed to stop you from being able to brick your phone
First of all, try try a few roms without spling more than once, find the hardspl guide for kaiser in the kaiser forum and hardspl it so you can flash as many roms as you like.
afterwards, just start flashing roms. bricking a device isn't that common if you do things properly. make sure all roms you flash are meant for kaiser..
Thanks again for the help and advice, which I have followed - I've applied HARDSPL as recommended. I've only had a chance to apply one ROM so far (AtheneOS WWE) which looks fantastic IMHO but I have what seems like a radio problem as I have no sound. So I shall have a go now at different radios I suppose? That's what most of the replies to posts seem to suggest for lack of sound after flashing. Its easier than I thought this lark - I can see this may be habit forming though
Great stuff you guys .

Another Happy (rom) Flasher!
lol. go ahead and enjoy flashing.

Orange tytn 2 users - de-bricking.

Hi there, I recently (lastnight) bricked my brothers Orange locked kaiser trying to unlock it. lol.... it was stuck on the bootloader menu without hard spl installed I seriously thought I'd killed it.. After 7/8 hours google scouring I found the original 6.1 kaiser rom from orange which has cured my problem of it being bricked.. but not the unlock!!
My advice.. Obtain a cheap unlock code rather than trying the hacking method cause it gets you no-where unless you're an uber hacker and modder and have 7/8 hours to kill after bricking your phone!
(just for reference issues, i had wm6 running on it at stock)
Hmmm.... just because you don't have the skills... no offense but you don't seem to have them, it does not mean that others don't. And scaring noobies away from trying the process in order to attain the skills is just wrong. I did it and I am not an uber-guru at this. I JUST READ ALL THE FAQs. You obviously did not or couldn't follow the script. So please, do obtain your cheap unlock code instead of doing something that gives you some experience and is free.
Advising a bunch of hackers (that's what we all are here) not to use the hacking method and to pay for it instead is a lost cause. If we wanted to pay for it, we* wouldn't have invested time and effort developing the free ones.
Sorry to say this but, most of the people who have problems with these methods fail to read / understand the instructions.
Thread closed, as it is not related to ROM development, and is just going to cause arguements more than anything else.
P.S. A bricked phone is un-recoverable, anything else is just a minor set back.

*by "we", I mean the real hackers, Olipro, pof, cmonex, des, jockyw2001, etc. - I personally wasn't involved

Can't unlock the SPL??

Hello All,
I do a lot of reading and follow along pretty good so far. I have done the unlock (I think I did) I was able to use other carrier's chip while travel over sea. So I figure that I have unlocked my Treo 750. I was also do the up grade to WM6.1 without any problems.. But now I keep reading the SPL and the IPL posts. So I took a look at my Treo 750, and it show IPL 0.20 and the SPL 0.24.0000. I try everything that was offered in the forum to unlock and reset and all the tricks and tips. Nothing works. The best I got was using the Cheeunlock and it only goes to 7% on my Treo and reset really quick. I seem to remember upgrade once to the WM6.5 using one of the forum members suggestion, but for the life of me I can't do it any more. I went back to the WM6.1 in matter of facts using the suggested method by a forum member. That is where I am at now. The question that I have is that, if I was able to upgrade to WM6.1 and using other carrier's chip. Am I unlock? Or am I just thinking that I am? , also why can I change the SPL and the IPL value? Thanks in advance for all the help, and sorry for such a long post.
O.K. so many views but no reply, but it is all in the name of testing. I guess after I have post this question and recevied no reply, I did some more reading and going throught he instructions over and over again and again, can never pass the #11 step to see the blue screen for upgrade. But I finally did it. The thing I did was to follow the upgrade and unbranded post here till the #11 step and the only change that I made was to included the *.nbh file (which ever one you want to put in.) in the tempche folder in your computer, and it took the upgrade and unlock the phone, change the hard spl and all that good stuff just like the instruction said. I guess you can called that #11a in the instructions. After I did all that I can do the upgrade to the WM6.5 without any problems, and revert back to the WM6.1 without a hitch. So if you guys are having problems doing the unbranded or upgrade try to put the *.nbh file in the tempche, instead of in your sd card. Good luck I am waiting now for the new 23XXXX build WM 6.5 to come out so I can play with the phone some more.

n00b post, sorry

Hey guys!
First post here. I'm coming off of the jailbreak-use-update-released-hack-released-reinstall-everything cycle of owning an unlocked iPhone and coming into the fold with a T-Mobile Rhodium. I'd like to add the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM to it, and I was quite happy when on the front page there was a link declaring that "Hard SPL for HTC Rhodium is here!". It sounded good, but after reading the instructions, I was a bit confused; I'm pretty sure that the majority of the confusion is largely vocabulary-based. I remember going nuts when I first started jailbreaking and unlocking my iPhone. As such, I'll hope you'll forgive me for asking all these basic questions. If there is a first time guide for this, then I'm sorry that I missed it (I did look!), and feel free to simply post a link to it.
First and foremost, is there a means of going back to the stock firmware should that become necessary? The T-Mobile people have mentioned the recovery partition on the device, so does altering the hardSPL impair my ability to use the recovery partition here?
2.) What exactly is the hardSPL anyway? how does it differ from regular firmware, or is it a subset thereof?
3.) Is there a way to save my current SMS mailbox?
4.) Does the HardSPL come with an updated version of TouchFLO3D, the same version, or will I be giving touchflo up to get the new winmo? (stock firmware comes with 2.1)
Thanks so much for your time to answer!
Joey
