Hey guys!
First post here. I'm coming off of the jailbreak-use-update-released-hack-released-reinstall-everything cycle of owning an unlocked iPhone and coming into the fold with a T-Mobile Rhodium. I'd like to add the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM to it, and I was quite happy when on the front page there was a link declaring that "Hard SPL for HTC Rhodium is here!". It sounded good, but after reading the instructions, I was a bit confused; I'm pretty sure that the majority of the confusion is largely vocabulary-based. I remember going nuts when I first started jailbreaking and unlocking my iPhone. As such, I'll hope you'll forgive me for asking all these basic questions. If there is a first time guide for this, then I'm sorry that I missed it (I did look!), and feel free to simply post a link to it.
First and foremost, is there a means of going back to the stock firmware should that become necessary? The T-Mobile people have mentioned the recovery partition on the device, so does altering the hardSPL impair my ability to use the recovery partition here?
2.) What exactly is the hardSPL anyway? how does it differ from regular firmware, or is it a subset thereof?
3.) Is there a way to save my current SMS mailbox?
4.) Does the HardSPL come with an updated version of TouchFLO3D, the same version, or will I be giving touchflo up to get the new winmo? (stock firmware comes with 2.1)
Thanks so much for your time to answer!
Joey

i am getting an 8125 next week from somebody who was a cingular customer. he got the factory unlock code from a cingular rep (but he cant unlock it cuz he doesnt have a different carriers sim card). is there any difference if i use that to unlock it or if i use the lokiwiz program i keep reading about??
also, as you can probly tell im new to pda's. to load the window mobile 6 would i have to unlock the CID (which im not even sure what it is)? what are the benefits for using wm6 and is it fully functional on the 8125 (ive read a few posts from ppl that say they have problems). i also saw a thread for making an i-phone skin...is it possible to have both wm6 and this iphone skin? also, can anyone explian what this aku2 rom is?
sorry to make this post, but there are so many threads about the stuff i am inquiring about and hundreds of pages and its just too long to go thru. if anybody can help me out that would be appreciated...thanks a bunch!!!
Other than to say you need to read some of the sticky's in the WM6 forum, as well as the Wiki's - here's a few hints:
If you have a G3 - get it CID unlocked. If it's a G4, you can leave it locked and still flash WM6 just fine - if you use shelltool.
WM6 is mostly cool factor, with a few new features. How many people can say they're running WM6? Bleeding edge, baby, but it ain't without some pain.
iPhone skin - yes, and good luck. I tried it, and it was a slow pig - it looked alot like the iPhone, but not worth the bling. Try driving your car with a painted tarp on it. yeah, right. Can barely open the doors.
As for aku2, no idea. Hit search and check it out.
You got lots of reading ahead of you. I spent 10 hours reading before my first attempt at flashing - and I'm a fast reader.
yea im doing a lotta reading....where is the link to the wm6? i cant seem to find it!
check my sig for all unlocking problems...once you do that worry about WM6..Just check out a section and read up on the roms

Don't learn by flashing. Learn by reading. $400 is a lot of jack to waste trying to learn by experience.

You can't use it with the cingular sim card beause you don't need it!
You have to borrow a sim card other than your carrier's sim card to apply the code. Once applied, the sim portion of your cell is unlocked for life if you have the right code.
Lockwiz will CID unlock your phone as well. Once successfull with this portion, you can install any ROM or Custom ROM....designed for your TYPE of device.
You are currently running an AKU2 ROM.
Based on your line of questioning, you have a WHOLE lot of reading to do. You sound like you're on your way to be stuck in bootloader mode.
Do your reading 1st, collect all your tools and all you need can be found by you doing the research in the threads. All the answers to your questions are in the WIKI....it's your friend.
This was a freebee....if you're not willing to go thru the hundreds of threads, as you stated to get the answer....use the search tool or stay with your factory ROM.
Remember: This is a Developer's Forum, not a USER's Forum
This thread you created was a waste!
no pain ... no gain....
imho it starts to look like a 3th rang helpdesk here
Hello Guys,
I am, what you call a "Noob".
I am about to get the 8125 from Cingular and would like to upgrade to wm6 ... there is no easy thread describing this issue. I do not know what most of the terms mean that you guys use
Soooo:
Is it supportet by Cingular? Is it legal? Is it Better !?
How do I upgrade ?
swell if u read around im sure its not hard.... the only part that requires thinking is determining if you have a G3 or a G4 8125...
heres a great thread that descibes your situation.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613
I have read that post and many others and I understand the part about g3 and g4 (versions..) but I am more concerned about background info about wm6 on my 8125 from cingular ...
Reading will give you all the background information you need.
After determining whether you have a G3 or G4 device, you will know whether you can unlock your phone - G3s can be unlocked, G4s cannot (unless you pay). Either way, you can still put WM6 on your device.
Steps for determining which device you have, and then how to CID unlock (if you have a G3) and flash new ROMS can all be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310831. CID unlocking you device WILL void your warranty, and Cingular, or any other carrier, does not support adding ROMS that were not released by them. Is it legal?....well...that is an issue all on its own. There is a thread somewhere here with different thoughts on the issue. I can, however, say from my perspective, WM6 is waaaay better than the WM5 stock carrier ROM. Less crashes, more memory, better programs, more features, more stable, and overall, just a better ROM.
The one thing about WM6 that you do have to remember is that there has not been and is not going to be an official release from any carrier for the wizard. All ROMS here have been "cooked" by various chefs. Some were ported from other devices that have gotten official releases, but a member named InGeNeTiCs managed to get a build specifically made for the wizard, which has been the base for many ROMS. Any ROM with OS 5.2.318 Build 15342.4.0.01 has this base OS. What this means, is that all drivers and everything else was made for the wizard, not for other devices then ported onto the wizard.
When you are ready to flash your ROM, read around and decide what one is for you. The NBD series is really good if you want the touch interface. Personally, I have tried XM6 and TNT and both are very stable classic crossbow ROMS.
As stated in the post above, you must read...read...then read... All the information that has been compiled on this forum cannot be put into one post, so read around.
Good luck!
yoz
Not much else you can say bro besides test them all and see what you like. it takes about 10 mins max to flash each. If you have a dual/quad core system, then put the ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID.exe on realitime priority and it takes about 3 mins Total. You will start flashing regularly i'm sure. Gettr' DONE!
So I just got my tilt today. This is my first smartphone and I just had a couple questions before I start flashing roms and such.
If I flash the HTC factory ROM, is this a completely different operating system than wm6?
Do wm programs work on the HTC ROM?
I know I sound stupid but I have to start somewhere.

ey, man, wellcome...
The right place to start is "reading"... there are a lot of ussefull info in the Wiki ... take time to read and to understand what you are reading... when you'll be familiarized with terms and concepts, then you'll have many questions to do, and someone take time to help you, but for now you need read
Cheers.
Start Here
A good place to start is the Kaiser Wiki. Located right here on XDA.
As far as flashing different roms go, every rom currently available for the Kaiser (Tilt) are Windows Mobile 6 roms.
The only issues I have run into with installing programs is when the install CAB file is locked down to a particular device. This was common with the original installer of TomTom GPS floating around the site.
Since you are new to the game, as I was just 18 months ago, the biggest piece of advice I can give is this: Search the forum before asking questions. This is not to avoid flaming, although that may happen from time to time, but due to the high volume of posting on the site, it may take longer to get a response if you create a new topic as opposed to adding your question to an existing one.

Awww, you beat me to it...
Thanks
Thanks for the response, I have been reading a lot lately but sometimes it is really hard to move on because people used advanced terms which are hard to find the meaning to without reading for hours through forums.
Just flashed on the HTC ROM, works perfectly.
I have really been looking to get the TouchFLO working on my Tilt, is this a setting or a button? Or do I need to install something?

Go to the wiki (its at the top of every page, its called "XDA-Wiki" and go to the kaiser section and read up. Also, go to my Tilt thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341024
I would also like to take this time to say "I told you so" to all the people who didn't think the majority of people with newbie questions would be Tilt users, and chastised me for making a "Tilt-only" thread.
defense
well in defense of myself.... a tilt was only $300 with new service where if I bought the "TyTn II" which is the same thing without a camera on the front, which I dont need, I would have to pay upwards of $800.
also thanks a lot for the threads very helpful
Now with the HTC rom there of course is no telenav, now do I have to pay for the GPS service through AT&T and Pay $9.99 for the telenav, or could I just purchase tom tom6 and be done with it and not pay at&t $9.99 a month for the gps service? thanks in advance for the response

If you purchase TomTom, then you are done. No monthly fees associated with it.
As far as your TouchFLO question, you need to flash your Tilt to a rom that supports it. As you will learn from browsing this site, cooked roms are still very new for the Kaiser/Tilt, so there will only be a few available.
For a basic TouchFLO rom with high stability, I recommend AustinSync's BIGstorage rom. TeleNav will be missing from it, but you will be able to access all of AT&T's internal networks such as MEdia Net without issue.
just for terminology purposes, kaiser/tilt is a pocketpc, not a smartphone.
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I can use the 6.1 ROMs on my Kaiser or am I limited to 6.0 ROMs?
I tried to download the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade from HTC but when I enter my Serial No. it says its unsuitable for my phone.
I bought it on ebay and its full of rubbish and seems heavily tampered and has lots of querky things going on - so I thought I would just flash it with one of your ROMs. I don't want to 'brick' it if 6.1 is incompatible. I have spent days reading the (astoundingly detailed) FAQ's but, maybe 'cos I'm dumb and don't understand the difference between ROM and OS, I'm worried I will trash the phone if HTC say its incompatible.
I'm rambling now because what I don't really know is whether A ROM includes OS or sits on top of OS.
Regards,
JN
You can, of course, use 6.1 roms on your kaiser. I suggest you just go to the kaiser section, read a bit, and find yourself a nice ROM.. the kaiser section is flooded with ROMs.. and good ones
Thanks for replying. I found several posts today from people who have trouble with screen touch alignment and wondered if there was a hardware incompatibility with some Kaiser's and WM 6.1. Also, I found the answer to my question about ROMs and OS in Q1 of the Kaiser ROM Flashing FAQ which I had already read but obviously not taken in.
I shall give one a try then.
Many thanks,
I'd suggest giving a few.. until you get it right
LOL
Ok then. What are the chances of totalling the phone? Mind You, I've got to the point where if I junk it I won't care too much. So I shall just have some fun.
Thanks for the reassurance and advice.
You should be able to hard reset if everything fails...which should save you in the worst case situation... I beleive though from reading up on it if you unlock your phone with HARDSPL it is supposed to stop you from being able to brick your phone
First of all, try try a few roms without spling more than once, find the hardspl guide for kaiser in the kaiser forum and hardspl it so you can flash as many roms as you like.
afterwards, just start flashing roms. bricking a device isn't that common if you do things properly. make sure all roms you flash are meant for kaiser..
Thanks again for the help and advice, which I have followed - I've applied HARDSPL as recommended. I've only had a chance to apply one ROM so far (AtheneOS WWE) which looks fantastic IMHO but I have what seems like a radio problem as I have no sound. So I shall have a go now at different radios I suppose? That's what most of the replies to posts seem to suggest for lack of sound after flashing. Its easier than I thought this lark - I can see this may be habit forming though
Great stuff you guys .
JN
Another Happy (rom) Flasher!
lol. go ahead and enjoy flashing.
First if anything i ask has already been posted, im sorry, im actualy doing this from my phone
I have an htc fuze and interested in applying one of the 6.5 roms that i have found on this site, some of which are specific for the fuze, yea for me. My problem is i am very computer savey but the instructions for these roms hav a diff laungage like "cooking" and "kitchen." Is there simple instructions or can someone create some instructions that break it down to a 2nd grade level? i would say 4th or 5th grade level but most of them these days r smarter then me.
next question, i'm not affraid to play around, this is why i want to do it but if i don't like 6.5 or if something go's wrong, how easy or hard is it to go back to the original rom?
thanks
