Fuze Water Damage - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I have a problem two days ago I was at work in the pouring rain and the belt clip where my Fuze was in got soaked and the screen on the Fuze doesn't turn on anymore and the tabs inside by the battery turned red. The phone still starts up and makes sounds and everything but the screen does not light up or the keyboard. A friend of mine was saying all I would have to buy to fix it is a new screen. Do you think I need just that or a new motherboard?

if you hear it boot up, and have you tried having someone call you ... if you can recieve calls then a screen is the way to go

Well it would certainly seem so, but.....
I don't know how much it would cost to replace that screen, but it might be more economical to go with an insurance replacement if possible? I know personally I wouldn't attempt to replace the screen, because you can certainly expect some other issues if the phone got that wet!

I am not posting any answers in this post or trying to jack the thread, but, Kewlj1313, the manner in which you suggested to use the insurance on the phone, it seems most of the people buy insurance for their Fuze. Is it true? It has got me a little worried because when I was ordering my Fuze, the sales rep actually asked me if I wanted it insured and I declined. Is it a regular thing to insure these phones?

For future reference, if your phone gets that wet again turn it off immediately. When you get home shake off as much water as possible then put it in a bowl of uncooked rice overnight or longer.
If you know there's still water in there, I'd still put it in a bowl of rice. If you're more ballsy than me you might try to soak it (off of course without a battery inside) in the highest concentration of rubbing alcohol you can find. Then let it dry out that way.
Rubbing alcohol should dilute the already contained water, somewhat clean any mineral deposits from the rain, and dry much more quickly than plain water.

I would put insurance on it but I brought the phone online and I am using it for Tmobile so I wouldn't be able to use at&t`s insurance on it, and when It got wet I did turn it off and let it dry and blew it out with an air hose. The replacement screen is about 80 dollars

You can purchase insurance through ATT for your first 30 days of having the phone! I personally definatelly think the 5 dollars a month is worth it, just knowing that I could throw my phone onto the ground, stomp on it, run it over, lose it, anything, and it would only cost me 125 to get a new one if needed
but that's just me!

I would say if you are comfortable enough with taking it apart and can get the screen then for sure give it a try! I would of course take the phone apart before ordering the screen, that way you'll know whether or not you'll be able to actually do it before you spend the money!

Really? I thought you had to have a contract with AT&T to get insurance from them, and yea I have no problem taking the screen off it's pretty easy

insurance does not cover water damage!
- There is a special sticker that reacts to water/liquids
- If returning, when the service tech see the sticker has reacted to water content, they then void the insurance.
- I've heard that microwaving the device will nullify the sticker's reactivity to water. However now you have a busted phone and a microwave.

If you have the at&t insurance for an extra $5/month it does. Even if the phone is lost or stolen, they will replace the phone for a $125 deductible. I remember I dropped mine in a pitcher of beer and had to get a new one.
If you don't have it, you might be able to talk to AT&T and try to prematurely re-extend your contract under special circumstance such as adding text or using a different minute plan.

Ive fixed a few "wet" phones (even my own old tytn 1 that fell into a river) by turning it of as soon as possible, take everything apart(stylus, battery,sd-card etc) shake as until all visible water is gone and put it all into a bowl of rice as the other dude earlier said. that has fixed 2 phones, the other 4(inluding my tytn 1) i had to disassamble totally(unscrew,take apart housing,disconnecting flatcables and so on) and then put all parts into a kitchentowel and then onto a plate and into my kitchenown on about 60 degrees celsius for few hours - assemble and voila =) truth be told, it dosnt always work but i just might.
if you think your screen is broken, and you tried the own-trick without hickups then order a new screen for ebay and just replace it yourself - not as difficult as one might think.

Damaged phone and need replacement ASAP

Hi,
So I had a family member throw my clothes into the washer without me knowing. And guess what? My Fuze was inside the pocket of my jeans. Now my phone is dead and I'm freaking out because I depend a lot on it for telling me my schedules, emails, calls, etc.
What's the best option for me to get the phone replaced? I got it around last spring (May)...
that would be classed as accidental damage and is most prob not included in your warrenty, i suggest you ring up htc, tell them what happened and ask what the best course of action is, it will most prob be cheaper to buy a tp off ebay than get it repaired as you can buy them for like $100
Well I saw another thread further down where people suggested putting it in a container of rice. I took it out after a couple hours and turned it. The LED flash blinked a couple of times and the phone was vibrating. Turned it off and put the phone back in with the rice.
Is there a way for me to open up the phone so I can manually dry the components myself?
I checked my warranty options and unfortunately HTC won't replace phones for water damage.

1. Drive to US Cellular store.
2. Hand phone to service tech or sales person.
3. Receive new phone under no questions asked replacement plan.
4.
If this isn't an option. I'm not sure about the diagrams. I tried looking them up in the service tech's stuff and he doesn't even have them yet. It's still too new, since none of them are out of warranty yet. It sounds painful, though. Sorry you have had to go through that already.

Uh, yeah no phone replacement unless you have the family premium plus plan for an extra $40 a month.
Still not sure how it cracked, no visible damage and the outer screen is intact with no scratches at all.

3 days after a friend got her mesmerize she droped it on the side walk. Her screen is reallly messed up now still runs and it still responsive to touch just has about 30 cracks in it looks like a broken mirror.
Couldn't you just call and sign up for the insurance and then file a claim? All they do is call you to make sure the phone works. There's no way for them to know it's already broke.

Yeah they give you 90 days or something..
Yea mine screen crack also. In process on removing the glass from the lcd screen. Was going to put it back together after I get the glass off and see if it will still work. I know it was still working before just couldn't read anything because of all the cracks in the cover glass.
What do you do to break the glass?
Mine broke when I threw it onto my desk. Dumb move by myself but I didn't even put any force behind it really and i've always done it with my other phones. Think it broke because I wasn't paying enough attention and it laided on a glass glass plate. Sound like a explosion when it hit. The back flew off and bat fell out. My bat is now bowed oddly enough. For if you sit it in the phone the bow make it so it will not sit flush. It is not swelling but actually bowed. Because the other side is now equally bowing in as the other side is bowing out.

I'm assuming you don't have the free replacement plan?
Naw don't have the plan(I have no service with it got it just to use as a test bed) just gonna order a replacement screen. Saw one for $100 including shipping. I didn't pay anything for it so paying $100 to fix screen no real big deal.
I wanted to play around with one before I actually gotten service with one. I like it ok. Main thing I wanted to do is try and replace the rear facing cam with a nicer one. If I can get a rear cam in it like the EVO has then I gonna get my lady one and prob get one for myself(the BOGO deal ya know.) Really my only complaint with the phone is its 5mp cam. I have a friend with the EVO and it has a 8mp cam and the pictures just seem so much nicer. That is only thing my wife complained about also. As she wants a phone with a really good cam for she can use it for her photographing hobby.

Warranty replacement question (ATT's website has no responses)

Long story short, I fell into a creek with my phone. According to the stuff I've read on ATT's site, the warranty does not cover water damage. If I took it to a replacement center, would they refuse to replace the phone because of this? I've heard that they sometimes just ask for the phone with no questions and hand you a new one.
Assuming they refused the phone though, would they have the means to sue me for intentionally bricking my phone to get a replacement?
I don't see how it could be grounds to sue. But, it probably means you would have to buy your next one.
Just apply the theory to anything else. If you fell in a creek with your car, would they give you a new car? Insurance would, but not directly from the dealer, hence you are paying for it with the insurance premium.
It will probably have the red void sticker showing that it is water damaged. And I doubt they will cover it.
Every phone AT&T sold has a water damage detection mark in side the phone. The first thing AT&T warranty dept. check is the mark. If it turns into pink or anything else other than white, your warranty is denied. Even if you get a replacement by luck, there are secondary check and you will be automatically billed full retail price (of a new phone) for your refurbished replacement phone.
Water damage is easy to find out. Bricked phone is not.

there is one on the battery as well. Probably also a hidden water detection sticker someone inside the casing (in addition to the one that is in the battery compartment and on the batt)

You haven't stated which warranty you are referring to. If you mean the 1 year factory warranty, then no it won't be covered. If you have the additional $5 coverage then it will be covered after a $125 deductible.

Yeah, soon we will find that the entire phone contains water detection markers
It must be the #1 cause for ppl to claim warranty replacements. For a few times I have to use warranty service, the first question they ask is what color is the sticker inside the phone.
BTW, if you use you phone in humid places a lot, like bath room while showing, good luck with your warranty

Hmmm. So far nothing is pink/red, I'll have to open my phone. Haven't attempted to peroxide/bleach them. The phone, for the most part, works. The leftover residue is causing some issues, though.

You shouldn't be using the phone yet if there is still water inside. Every moment it's on increases the risk of a short or other damage. Stick the phone in a bowl of rice for a day or two. Make sure you keep the back plate off, and take the battery, SIM and SD cards out, and place them in a separate smaller bowl of rice. The rice absorbs the remaining moisture from the phone.
I've saved countless friend's phones this way.

AT&T is a $125 deductible for smartphones. I've already claimed mine once.

For the past 24 hours I took the whole thing apart (screws and all) and let them dry. Not with rice, but they're dried up nonetheless. It's not so much the water that concerns me as it is the leftover particles in any residue that's left behind.

I'm in some serious trouble!!! My screen stopped working!!

Hey guys,
I was at work playing a mkv file in my car then I cool myself off by dripping water on me and I accidentally drip a little bit on the screen I suddenly notice my screen lowering the volume by itself and I quickly dried it off. Afterwards, I notice the screen brightest on the left side (facing up) started flickering I immediately knew there was going to be serious issues. I turned off the phone, checked the casing for any drippings and found no water drips inside the casing. I turned on the phone to find a quick pixelated screen for a quick season then booted to the HTC theme..
The phone booted to the home screen that's when the screen started to flicker similar to a computer's VGA, DVI or HDMI cable is loose in the back every pixel color on the screen starts flashing in colors. The screen turned pink then stopped working..
Here's the good news: I'm covered with tmobiles premium insurance and HTC's insurance...
Here's the bad news: I s-off, rooted and flashed a rom 12hrs ago..
Technically speaking, I'm screwed because I can't get the screen to function to revert back the changes and Idk what to do.. If you've any thoughts or ideas to help me fix this issue please I'll gladly appreciate.
There is 2 real options.
One is repair the screen all though somehow I don't think the water has caused the problem, modern mobile devices can usually withstand a small amount of water including light rain and maybe a light splash of liquid. They are all tested for this kind of thing. It sounds like something physical as I'm fairly sure it wont be the ROM to blame, so by this you should be able to claim on the insurance as its a physical defect and would of happened regardless of flashing etc. I can't be sure how successful you'll be with this though, its probably best to go to the HTC insurance for this as tmobile with blow it off as quick as possible.
The other option is not advised and is classed as insurance fraud which is highly illegal there for won't be putting it down in writing due to not wanting to upset the admins, mods and rules of the forum. But I'm sure you all know what the procedure is.

After fully inspecting the case and the phone itself.. I just realized the little drip of water could've made its way inside the phone small gap after noticing something white stuck in there..
I gotta have the idea that if the screen doesn't work then they can't see what's inside it right? lol.. I'm going to discharge the phone and let it dry then pray it works so I can revert the changes then make a claim.

Check your insurance policy, accidental damage might be covered. Surely they can't make all claims void if the device software has been modified. In my eyes HTC actively encourages it.

HTC won't blow me off despite it being rooted and having a different rom? I know tmobile would blow me off if they found out I rooted the damn thing.. Maybe idk honestly.. I could smash it to pieces and say I dropped in a 3 story building still be covered (I asked this question before purchasing the insurance haha)..

The best option is probably let the device dry off. Reboot it in a few hours, assess the damage if any, if its fixable or fine go for that, if its beyond fixing then take it as far as you see fit mate
Try drying your phone out on a windowsill or somewhere else warm, with the back case off and the battery out for a few hours, then give the phone a try again.
If that doesnt work then I suggest following RoganTheTwat's advice! You should be ok with the root situation...

I'm definitely going to do that and if not then claim it with tmobile or HTC! I hope I get more opinions and knowledge like yours.
If nothing helps,DO NOT drive over it, and DO NOT claim accidental damage. If you do, you would commit fraud and would take minuscule amount of money from their HUGE profits, which they get by ripping off customers. So DO NOT do anything like that mate.

very important to keep battery out and phone off since there is a sign of possible water damage.
the drying part you can keep it in a zip lock bag of rice it will help absorbing moisture and water.
or "Carefully with this one" wrap it up with cotton cloth and apply Warm air by a hair dryer( Do NOT set it on HOT ) apply it randomly don't constraint on one area and make sure you keep distant.

get a bowl of uncooked rice, put the phone inside the bowl and make sure you cover it so that air won't be able to get in. leave it for a day.. also make sure that the phone is off.. you can take the battery out to be safe.. always works.. saved a lot of my friends phone, including one who dropped her cp on a toilet bowl.

This was accidental damage I didn't purposely pour drips of water onto my phone because I wanted to know what will happen. There's no fraud under tmobile's policy if I claim it to be accidental or anything else.. I'm paying $7mo for premium insurance.

I put it in a rice zip-lock bag next to my computer then I'll wrap it with cotton cloth and apply warm air. I'll post results in about 7hrs.

to OP. i dropped my HD2 into the bowl while it was flushing for a good 3 seconds. Didn't work for 5 days. But its still working till now (for more than a year.) i just opened up all the casings and let it dry

Finally, someone with some sense...Moisture will get into that thing like its no ones business if you let it.
If the rice doesnt work, try something stronger. You can get stuff at the grocery store that is meant for drying out moist rooms. I use it to keep the bathroom dry.

Follow Up from LG Repair

Just wanted to follow up regarding my cracked screen from the drop from my pocket to the linoleum laundry room floor. Phone was sent in to LG for diagnosis and they showed great service by quickly responding back (4 days from sending the phone from Idaho to Texas). Unfortunately I don't think they did too much analysis as their diagnosis was a canned response that said "the malfunction was caused by physical damage or water/liquid damage which is not covered under warranty."
It wasn't a malfunction. I dropped it from pocket level and the screen splintered. From all of the advertising and 3rd party drop test videos I've seen, when properly built the phone withstands WAY more than one 3 foot drop. But whatever. I acknowledge it was my butterfingers that made the drop.
At any rate, my dilemma is do I pay the $146/$153 for the repair/repair and refurbish charge or do I DIY with the digitizer I ordered from a 3rd party? I know going forward that unfortunately this will be the last LG I own. With so many other options from Moto, Samsung, Sony, Huawei, etc companies need to own their advertising if they want my cheddar.
Anyone have any experience with aftermarket parts? I don't want to have a mutt phone that has functionality issues.

It wasn't a malfunction. I dropped it from pocket level and the screen splintered. From all of the advertising and 3rd party drop test videos I've seen, when properly built the phone withstands WAY more than one 3 foot drop. But whatever. I acknowledge it was my butterfingers that made the drop.
At any rate, my dilemma is do I pay the $146/$153 for the repair/repair and refurbish charge or do I DIY with the digitizer I ordered from a 3rd party? I know going forward that unfortunately this will be the last LG I own. Just wanted to say that, Samsung, and Motorola are the same way. Prior to buying this phone, my nexus6 was lying, in an Otterbox, with a tempered glass screen protector, on my truck console. I called my wife on my way home, screen was fine, set it down, drove about four miles, picked it up when I got home and the screen was split with one crack, from the top left to the bottom right corner... Nothing touched it the whole way home, and with the Otterbox, the screen doesn't touch the padded console lid anyway. Needless to say, t-mobile's insurance company, Assurant, is worthless... 12 dollars a month for insurance, and 175 to have it fixed. Called Motorola, they'll fix it for the exact same price...? So needless to say, bought my v10 so I have a phone till I fix the nex myself, dropped all the insurance, on all my plans, (4 lines $48 less a month) and covered them for $20 a month on square trade, with a he'll of a lot cheaper deductible. Sorry for the long winded response, but until a manufacturer can guarantee screens won't break (new moto?) all companies will treat you like this...

That's insane. See as business owner, I completely get and understand company policies. But I also understand that inevitably there are exceptions to the policies. Like when you drive home with your phone in an otter box in your console only to find the screen cracked. Or when you have a "military grade drop test" phone that falls 3 feet and splinters the screen like in my case. Clearly my device wasn't built with the same standards or tolerances as those shown in all the drop test videos, so as an exception, step up and fix the device. When we make 250 sandwiches and one person calls in and data the bread was a little dry, I'm refunding him and buying his next meal no questions asked. I don't care if nobody else complained about the bread, you take care of the exception.
I get that mobile devices aren't sandwiches, but the principle holds true. But I guess if every company is doing the same thing, nobody needs to step up.

I think the problem is that there's no way to prove that he dropped that phone only from a couple of feet or that he had a heavy duty case on it.
If companies were replacing screens under warranty every time someone broke their, they'd be out of business.
I had bought a warranty for 70 bucks through Sony for my z3 phone and had it replaced when the screen cracked. Wish LG offered a similar warranty for this phone.

I agree entirely with your premise, despite the fact that I believe that most people are honest and don't try and unnecessarily hose companies. However, in my case, what's the point in them "examining" the device to determine if it's a defect or was caused by me if they really don't even look? My V10 was less than a week old and didn't have even the slightest nick or flaw anywhere on the phone or around the edges. I feel like if they truly inspected it they could actually be able to determine if it was caused by the actual drop, excessive dropping, OR a build quality/construction problem. Given that mine looks brand new apart from the splintered screen maybe they conclude that it's a build issue. Maybe someone else sends in theirs and there are scratches, dings, and nicks around the outside and they conclude that the phone was probably dropped multiple times. Am I making sense?
Yeah, in the past just did a monthly warranty extension with Verizon. When my wife and I upgraded I looked at what was offered and reviews for Assurance. I got her Apple Care+ for her iPhone, and went Square Trade for my V10.
And that's why LG has fine print while they make their durability claims.
This is why I use tempered glass screen protectors, I'd rather break the screen protector than damage the glass on the phone a $10-20 expense vs $150-$300 depending on the route you take to fix the phone glass. I've replaced the damaged glass smartphones in most cases the glass is attached with UV loca to the screen and if you can manage to separate the glass from the screen without damaging it you can pay only about $25 for new glass off of ebay, but I assure you it is not an EASY thing to do for a novice. Keep in mind if you pay the $8-9 a month for the phone insurance you are basically wasting $192-$216 over two years if you don't use it. [/rant ]
Your best bet is to replace the part yourself. You can buy what you need off of Ebay. If you've never replaced the screen with the digitizer before You NEED to watch videos on youtube and read anything on ifixit for the tools you might need to buy to disassemble the phone. You are lucky right now prices start at $83 and go up, but make sure you buy the correct model for YOUR phone screen with digitizer can be different between phone model from different carriers.. And if you are uncomfortable doing this yourself buy the part and try to find a local shop(usually a third party cell phone shop) that will do the work for you. Here's an ebay link

I purchased the digitizer but in the end I had LG do the repair because they would warranty it. I didn't want to risk dorking up a $650 device. I probably should have tried as it would be nice to have that skill. Maybe I'll drop the phone next week and then I'll get to do it ha ha. Definitely going to throw a screen protector on...especially given that I'm convinced mine was poorly assembled in the first place causing it to shatter after one small drop.
