ATT Media net 10$/month family - Touch Pro, Fuze General

So i've seen a few threads here saying that the new deal with media net unlimited package was 10 dollars a month now. Well i called today to get it and was told that not only was it for my fuze(i did the sim swap trick to make it seem we all had regular phones) but also the other two phones in my family, all three of us now have unlimited data for 10 dollars a month. This seems too good to be true. Did anyone else have a similar experience?

So your saying the Rep said that this applied for your fuze or did it apply to your fuze because it had another sim card?

Are you saying your paying $10 a month for all 3 phones... or $10 a month PER phone ($30).
I think I might jump on this. I have a Fuze and my fiance has her old blackjack. She has unlimited messaging for $20 and I have MediaNet Bundle (Unlimited Data, 200 SMS, Unlimited AT&T Messaging) for $25.
So we spend about $45 a month.
If we could get unlimited Family Messaging for $30, then both unlimited data for $10... that would be $50.
I'd pay $5 more so my fiance can get online.

I assume this is only for Family Plans

I used to do that. I worked at radioshack though, and our rep for ATT told us that he used to be a manager at an ATT store and would add the non-pda data plan to peoples accounts, and some would come back later with giant bills because they were revised and billed per byte.
He said it didn't happen a lot, and a lot of times ATT would be full of mercy and not charge the full amount, but he did tell me it occured.
I say be careful because you would be breaking the terms and conditions and they would have every right to charge you 3 cents/KB
has anyone on this forum been caught?

from my understanding it was 10 dollars total for all three lines(as in a total of 10 a month, not 30). I specifically said to the rep, "no no i don't want the family plan i only want it on the one line" to which he replied that it was a family bundle that i qualified for since i had a family unlimited texting plan. I didn't mention my fuze so i don't know what will happen, perhaps this month will have some ridiculous charges but i'll play ignorance and try to fight them. So we shall see. My online account has not updated yet so i have no way of knowing 100% what is going on but i'm rather curious.
also it's only 1c/KB not 3 for their standard charges.

I've been using the MediaNet plan on my Samsung Blackjack, Samsung Epix, and HTC Fuze for 3+ years.
Their expensive internet plans are stupid. When I bought my Epix... the sales guy said, "Since the Epix is a newer faster phone... it won't work with the Media Net plan because the MediaNet plan doesn't send the data packets fast enough and so it won't work".
I'm a Network Engineer. What kind of crap is that?
I popped in my old sim and started checking my email.
Unlimited Data = Unlimited Data.
Every time I call CS and they get me started on that crap I give them an earful. Plus data plans are outrageous. Why would anyone want to pay for a Data plan which is the same, if not more, then the data plans they have in their homes.
SMS is nothing more then free money for them and people don't use that much data. Unlimited Data and Messaging should be MAX $20.

AT&T over-chargingn for data
I see someone else shares my irritation (exasperation) with AT&T (and the other carriers, since they all charge about the same).
I pay $30.00 a month for DSl (3mb down, 768 up). Why or why should I pay the same for speeds that are less than half that on AT&T's network just because its mobile?
Yes I can check my mail (almost) anywhere but.....thirty bucks is ludicrous, I cancelled my data plan on my Kaiser and my wifes Blackberry because it wasn't worth the service. We were paying over $60.00 a month for unlimited data on two phones. (Everyone kick me me becaause I deserve it).
Now you are telling me you are getting it on two phone on the "family plan" for $10.00 a month ?
WoW !

Let me clear this up, I might be new to this forum but I am very familiar with AT&T rates and plans. Lets just say I use this information almost daily.
THIS APPLIES FOR STANDARD MOBILE DEVICES (NOT PDA/BLACKBERRY/iPHONE)
For Individual Lines (AT&T Nation)
-Data Unlimited (formerly known as 'MediaNet Unlimited')
cost $15 per phone.
-Unlimited Messaging (SMS+MMS+IM)
cost $20 per phone.
-Messaging & Data Unlimited (Data+SMS+MMS+IM)
costs $30 (save $5 from getting the two seperately)
For Family Plans (AT&T Family Share)
-Data Unlimited
cost $10 per line in the family plan (instead of $15 for individuals)
-Family Messaging Unlimited
cost $30 (one price covers every line on the plan)
THE FOLLOWING IS FOR PDA/BLACKBERRIES
For Individual Lines (AT&T Nation)
-PDA Personal or Blackberry Basic
cost $30 per phone.
-Unlimited Messaging (SMS+MMS+IM)
cost $20 per phone.
-PDA/BBRY Messaging Bundle
costs $50
For Family Plans (AT&T Family Share)
-PDA Personal / Blackberry Data
cost $30 per line
-Family Messaging Unlimited
cost $30 (one price covers every line on the plan)
During the sign-up process, the IMEI number of your device will be registered to your account. If the system detects the IMEI of a device that falls under the PDA or BLACKBERRY category, the Data Plans populate itself only to 'PDA Personal $30' or 'BBRY BIS Personal $30'. If an IMEI of a regular phone was entered, it will populate the options for 'Data Unlimited' for $15
When you purchase your PDA device like a Blackjack II, if you somehow manage to have an IMEI of a normal phone be entered instead of the Blackjack II, you will be billed the rates according to whatever type of phone that was entered. (This will not work with Blackberries because BBRY needs the BIS data and the PIN number to be registered.)
Also what might be possible is; get your devices and plans normally, like a Fuze with a $30 PDA Data plan, a month later, call customer service and tell them that youre switching to a different device that you bought yourself, and give them the new IMEI (imei should be from a non pda/bbry device), and have them change the data plan prices accordingly. Voila, you saved $15 dollars per month per phone.
Oh and if some of you were wondering, the carriers data service is just data, meaning it wont know the difference between data from a Sony Ericsson W350 to an HTC Fuze, or a Touch Pro, or a Touch Diamond, or Xperia, or Nokia N96, or iPhone knock-offs, etc. you get my point.

not to sure about this..i have a family plan and i did this trick way back in the day with my 8525 (was $20 at the time for medianet and i had to do it again when the price dropped while using my tilt) and unless theve dropped the price recently for family plan data rates then this is incorrect and its still $15 (what i pay a month with a fam plan)

oh and has anyone ELSE besiodes the OP confirmed this $10 all lines plan?

For me it says $15 a month for regular cell phones and $30 a month for pda's such as the fuze.
How many of you guys are doing the thing were you call up and add a regular phone as your phone and then select the $15 for data and then just switch your sim card into the fuze and still only pay $15 for data instead of $30? What would happen if att finds out?
Thanks.

Yes, I see that too, but if you look closer at the fine print for those top two items, it says they are only available to regular cell phone ie not the fuze.

i've been using this on my 8125 for a few years now i have the media net unlimited with 200 text messages for 20 a month.
i just did this recently for my wife when i added her on to my family plan she wanted a blackjack so i had her get a dumb phone first with the unlimited messaging and the 1500 text messages for 30 a month before the 30 days were up with the dumb phone i had her return it and ordered her a refrub'd blackjack off with the discount through my job
the medianet and the messing plan stuck and i just switched her from the unlimited net and 1500 text to unlimited net and unlimited text for 30 a month
so when and if i upgrade to a fuze any new att phone with a newer htc
just like the network guy said above DATA is DATA
i checked around I didn't see anything online about the unlimited data for 10 bucks a month anybody been able to enable this?

which is why you do the trick mentioned earlier and all over this forum so you can get it.

Confirmed in Chicago area!!
The catch is (as someone already mentioned) you have to put ALL THE PHONES from your Family Plan on the $10/mo. Unlim MediaNet Data Plan...and NONE of them can be PDA or iPhones. I'm saving $45/mo !!!

O2 Uk Flat Data :)

Hello all,
I just had an interesting conversation with a rep @ O2 UK.
I just got a bit keen and started calling SP's (3 T-mob and O2) about Data services that they offer.
I currently have a HTC advantage (ameo) on T-mobile web and walk which costs me £32.50 a month for a piddly amount of texts and mins and Data capped at 1GB "fair usage" they say, no skype, no streaming, no USB.
(not that I give a **** I listen to radio ABF many days a week through 3g
This isnt their premiere uncapped data service, that costs double or triple what I pay.
Well I called 3 and I got an annoying sales rep on the phone, he told me that I can't buy a sim on its own from 3!
Then I said ok Ill get a free phone from you just give me flat data and he reeled off reasons why it wouldnt work and if it did I would be tied to only visiting certain sites.....
The networked which names its self "3" as in 3rd gen communications wont give me 3rd gen communications.
Ok I thought, I call everyone else.
O2 just happened to be first on my list.
I told the sales guy my deal on T-mobile and I said I wanted to get an Uncapped data plan for as cheap as possible.
Well he told me that on the 28 September 2007 a new UNLIMITED data plan will be available for all contracts for!!!!! £7.50
Thats what we pay for 1 GB on T-mob.
If you add this to the £15 a month SIM ONLY contract they have which gives 200 UK mins and 400 text's thats £22.50 a month for calls texts and UNLIMITED DATA>
Looks like I will be paying them my hard earned money instead of T-mobile.
Sorry if this has been reported before (and I missed it)
Have a good day all
iPhone Users Get Their Butts Kissed
Well so far it sesm that O2 will be kissing the butt of iPhone customers.
According to the O2 site, their will indeed be unlimited data for the iPhone on all tariff options of the iPhone, however strangely the price of the actual handset doesn't scale down as you increase the tariff.
There is currently no mention of the unlimited data plan being available to customers on other packages with other model handsets, although having read something on the 3G forum, a user their posted a link to this topic on another site:
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=154284
Whilst it is not unlimited as with the iPhone its certainly a step in the right direction if the information is correct. A read from another site that O2 will again ammend their data tariffs in Q1/Q2 of 2008 to make them match those of T-Mobile which would be excellent, although I'm sure existing customers won't be privy to the new rates until renewal time.
O2 will have brought these new rates in just in time to save my custom if the information is correct, althogh I have sent an email to O2 this evening moaning, saying along the lines of I think that O2 are too interested in making money than providing customers with good handsets, because the HTC Kaiser eats the iPhone for breakfast, however because of all the hype about the iPhone it will obviously sell better than a Kaiser would do, even though the features suck by comparison, and that I also think that it is very customer discrimination esk by providing iPhone customers with unlimited whilst everyone else suffers.
Let's she thier reply!!

You did better than me all I got out of them was that there was an unlimited plan due out on the 1st but no details available.
You can actually do better than this with T-Mobile. They have a £7.50 a month sim only plus £7.50 a month Web N Walk addon. So £15 a month.
But it is good news because I'm on the O2 Simplicity £15 a month contract so come 1/10 I'll be calling O2 to get the data added.
Thanks for the Yarod.
Lucky Europeans!
God, Europe gets all the good cell phone stuff. They get tons of phones sold to them unlocked, they get decent prepaid options, going with a SIM-only contract isn't uncommon, CDMA is non-existent, and unlimited data w/ 400 texts for £32.50 (Roughly $64.80, according to Google).
True, while Sprint's SERO plan is offering unlimited data and texts for $30/mo (roughly £15), it's CDMA, and Sprint has the worst customer service record I've ever heard of. The closest deal is T-Mobile's $20 data plan, with either a $30 calling plan (300 minutes) or 300 minutes and MyFaves ($40), which brings you to around $70 after taxes and fees ($80 if you want 1,000 text messages).
I almost wish I could buy an O2 SIM and use it here (without crippling fees and charges, that is).
Finally someone to match T-Mobile!
Competition is a good thing indeed.

data plan and premier

hello guys,
i am planning to order the captivate through the premier website
when i check out, i didn't have to add data plan to my account, but if i add the iphone, i have to add the data plan.
does this mean at&t will not add the data plan even after i activate my phone?
anyone ordered through premier and able to use it without at&t forcing a data plan into your account?
no, eventually you'll get a text saying they've added a data plan so you can avoid large charges.
their system got smart, if they have you imei, they know what model phone you have and they can dole things out accordingly

i switched from touch pro to pure last year in november( not upgrade, got it somewhere else), and i didn't get any text nor any data plan even though they recognize my phone in the system
It was just made mandatory sometime in November or December of 2009. I believe people that had smart phones before then are still allowed to stay on the pay per use(.02 per kb). Although when they upgrade their phone they will be forced into a data plan.

Did you order from Premier without data plan? I am in the same boat and would like to know about this as well. I am eligible for an upgrade in Sep and would like to get a Captivate (or any other Smartphone) to replace my Fuze (no data plan currently). Thanks.
As I said in the post before you, the data plan is added for you automatically. I went round and round with at&t when they added it to one of my lines(in december). I was even able to get the data plan turned off, just to be enabled again only an hour later. Moral of the story is if you want the phone you have to have data (with at&t atleast). Even if you have a phone that currently does not have data and you upgrade. The primary account holder will receive an email addressing this once a smart phone is detected.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I think they can override it if they want to. I lost my SIM during an overseas travel and got a new one for the same old number last month from AT&T.
After I put that in my Fuze and activated it, I got a text saying an "appropriate" data plan has been added for this smartphone.
I didn't contact them, just waited to see what happens in the bill, it still came just for the voice. No data plan. So it might be possible if one can convince them. $15 plan is not a biggie but I work from home so even that would be a waste.
Does anyone know if you have the $30 data and text plan, will that be changed if I order through the premeir website? I tried to upgrade at a corporate store and was told since my phone of record was a Samsung Eternity, I did not have a smartphone plan and would therefore have to upgrade to the new data plans. I refused the upgrade. When I first got the Eternity, I had a $35 data plan. A couple of months before the change to the data plans, I changed the data plan to the $30 a month smartphone plan, saving $5 a month. Does anyone know how this would go? Thanks.

Your Eternity is not a smartphone. And smartphone data plan does not include any texting. $30/m is for data only. Texting is extra.
So, whatever your current plan is, it won't carry over to a smartphone. And since you don't have any unlimited smartphone data plan, you will only get the 2GB data plan if you buy a smartphone now.

Yes it is highly likely. I called AT&T a while back when I got my Nexus and told them I got a "new generic phone" and that I wanted Media Net. They asked me for the IMEI and said "Thats a Nexus One, thats not a generic phone!" and forced me to get the $30/mo plan. Basically they have the IMEI ranges for nearly every device out there and if its a smartphone they will charge you for the smartphone data package.
I would say yes, because it is a ATT branded phone. I had G1 and used their $10 data package without a problem. I did have a pantech matrix when I got the data package though, just didn't tell them about the G1.

You guys are all asking the same exact question. No one, but AT&T knows.
I have had a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 on my AT&T account with the $30 unlimited data/txt package from Nov 2008 - January 2010. I wasn't switched over at all. But this was an unbranded unlocked smartphone.
Then I had a AT&T branded Motorola Q9h smartphone on the same $30 plan from January until I got my Captivate on the 18th. I wasn't switched over at all while using the Q9h even though, the online account manager recognized by phone.
It's going to be hit or miss. Just use your phone and if you aren't caught, well congrats. If you are, just pay or switch carriers.
I put my old tilt on my wife's line and she used it for about 5 months without a data plan. AT&T says in their ToS they have the right to add a data plan to your line if they find you are using a smartphone without one, but they never added it to her account.
Most likely because she had 0 data usage. When I upgraded through At&T to the captivate I was forced to add it.
AT&T only recently started adding the data plans automatically for smartphones. The system can now detect and add the service to your plan without your approval or interaction. The data service CAN be removed and blocked from ever being added to your plan again by a manager, but if you have a new phone that you bought at the subsidy price (read: with contract) then you will probably have to either pony up for the non-contract price or keep the data plan.
If you already had a data plan your service will remain unchanged if you upgrade your phone wether a data plan is required or not.
In 07-08 my wife and I both had Blackberry Pearl 8110's, hers was just the standard was AT&T locked and had been given to her by her mother, mine was purchased unlocked and unbranded. I dropped mine and the screen broke, but I kept it around. In April her phone started to act up ... so I took her phone apart and put the screen on my old unlocked BB inserted her SIM and she was back in business like nothing ever happened. 2 days later she recieved a text that an "appropriate" data plan had been added. She never wanted a dataAT&T only recently started adding the data plans automatically for smartphones. The system can now detect and add the service to your plan without your approval or interaction. I have a Premier account with unlimited talk, text and data on my and my son's lines and unlimited talk and text on my wife and daughters lines.
When I contacted AT&T they informed me that unless the service has a block put on it by a manager that the data plan will indeed re-add itself.

I got $20 data plan on my new lines

I called Customer Loyalty and got a nice lady and was friendly to her. I didn't threaten to cancel or anything, here is a paraphrasing of the conversation:
Me: "I have a friend who recommended T-Mobile to me, and he has a Vibrant with a $20 data and when I asked about it in the store they said they could only activate me under the $30 plan, but I could talk to a customer service to change my plan."
Rep: I don't see that option being available on your account.
Me: <silence>
Rep: Well let me see what I can find....(10 seconds later)...I can definitely make that change on your account for you.
Me: Thank you so much, that really helps out. Have a great day.
Obviously there was some paraphrasing but it was pretty much as simple as "I know someone who has this, can I have it?" I now have 2 MT4G's with $20 data plans on a contract that is a week old.
But what did you pay for the phone?
I went entirely through retention and they offered (I did not ask) the phone for $99 in addition to the $20 plan.

I got the phones for 79.99 each both with a $50 rebate in-store after I showed them the Wirefly/Bank of America deal.
So 29.99 after rebate a piece.
I too have the $20 android data plan on my MT4g. I've had it for a few months with my other android devices.

Nice (but with $20 plan)? Also, upgrade or new plan?
I am surprised you got the deal at a store - as they were wining about how they were not allowed to do deals there - especially with respect to the plans. I went through retention because of this.
Maybe it's the 2gig plan and not the unlimited plan?
I've had the $20 data plans for a while now (unlimited data) for all 3 of my data using lines. They are AWESOME. But I got to pay $125 (after instant rebate) for my mytouch4g which is fine because they've hooked me up sooooooooooooooo much in the past few years that I am not about to complain about what better pricing they offer me. They are truly awesome and the best part is.... most of the time, like 99% of the time, they offer me these deals and I don't have to ask them for a damned thing. Now THAT is rare.
I've been with them also since 2002 so that helps a bit lol.
It was on new contract activations and I got the unlimited plan for $20

Hopefully this will be able to tether Hope that its truely "unlimited"
I tried this also but I was told it was not available for me. I was told it was for long term customers.
i had the umlimited android plan for $25. i called the Rentention just now and they upgraded me to the new 4g unlimited data plan for the same $25. saving me $5 according to the rep.
For those thats wondering it is noticably faster.

Odd, because I just called them as well and they told me there is no need to change my package because either way I have unlimited data and that includes 4G network where I live. As part of their unlimited data package it includes, edge, 2g, 3g, and 4g so my $20 unlimited data package is just fine...esp. considering my phone is a 4G phone. Hmmmmm =/
It's basically just a rename as I take it then. They both said the package operates the exact same way.

I have the same plan, but when I go to my account at their website and check on services for that line, it pops up a message that I need to convert to the 4G plan (for $30 of course).
I will not do it, as I agreed to going from a $15 unlimited data plan to the unlimited "android" plan for $20 only 2 weeks ago to get the upgrade MT4G.
I may have to get the retention dept to "fix" this (they can do a lot of things the regular support cannot do - like activate a new line on my @home service - which is otherwise no longer supported)

Yeah it's actually been like that for me for months now. For some reason the loyalty dept.s data package doesn't show online for me as well. And every time I tried to go in to change services (well to add visual voicemail) it popped up.
They expressed to me our packages are no different then those with the name of 4G. I would hope so lol.
I might call them and see if they can fix that too online though for future use.
*edit* I just called he said it has something to do with the fact that the data package given to us thru loyalty (the pricing being the difference) doesn't appropriate with the system for some odd reason but they put in a request to have it fixed, ALSO He assured me "200%" that our package is "exact same" as this so called 4G package but simply for better lack of understanding "renamed to 4G package" because before they had 5 or 6 different types, now its simply 2.

Most people can't make use of unlimited data. If you look at your data usage you might want to take the 200 mb (there is no 2 gb plan as suggest by JCorpornicus). On my 3 lines we were using at the max about 80,000 kb on one of the phones (the 200 mb plan is for each phone) so we took the $10 200 mb plan on each phone. Saved a lot of money!
I wonder if they charge you overage on the 200mb plan once you go over, or if they cap it like the 5gb plan. If its the latter, I would totally switch to save money, as I'm always around wifi anyway.
It also doesn't make sense that they charge $20 for 5gb and $10 for just 200mb o__O something seems off about that.

I just called in hopes of getting this deal and the rep told me the $20 data plan does not include text messages and to add text messages it would be $5 for 300 or $14 for unlimited.
The current plan I am on right now is 400 text messages and unlimited data for $25
I called and tried to sound calm and nice just asking for help but they only offered that or unlimited text/data for $30
I have been with them for 8 years now. Am I missing something here?

Hey suicide - so I have been thinking about going this route with my phone. It would save me about 100$ a month, but I haven't because I have had varying answers when looking for whether or not web is unlimited or whether it will work. Do you have any insight here to clarify on the unlimited web?
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100085&page=2
Still sounds nifty
always gotta read the fine print
7. STRAIGHT TALK UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR: (1) access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or (2) any applications that tether your device to a laptop or personal computer other than for the use of Wireless Sync. I
for unlimited talk and text it's a good deal but their definition of "unlimited data" is useless
T-Mobile pre paid $50 unlimited plan
11. * Data Plans and Other Features. You will be charged for data usage on a pay per use basis unless you are required to maintain a data plan (“Data Plan”) as part of your Service, or as otherwise provided by your Rate Plan or prepaid data pass. Permissible and Prohibited Uses: Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your Device and not on any other equipment. AT&T Go Phone $50 unlimited plan

$5 for 10 MB
$15 for 100 MB
$25 for 500 MB
basically $75 bucks a month
Do you use this?
I am gonna do a little more research and see which would be better, ST or T-Mobile. I guess ST is atnt for pre-paid? If t mobiles allows data (web surfing) I definitely would be interested in that a little more. That thread I linked mentioned having to drop 200$ on a new Nokia. That hurts there.

no Im stuck in a AT&T contract, I pay about 90 bucks a month for unlimited talk/text and 250mb of data..... majority of my data I use is wifi thats why i went with the smaller data package
seems like out of the three if you want the data T-Mobile would be the way...
as far as dropping 200 bucks on a nokia I have no clue Im pretty sure you can find someone selling a sim card if that's the case

Questions for T-Mobile users.

Alright, so currently I have an S3 with T-Mobile and I'm paying around $100 for just my line that includes 500mins, unlimited data and text.
I rarely break the 150min mark each month so I would definitely like to change my plan to something that offers less minutes. Makes no sense on paying for something I don't use, right.
What would be my best option right now? Go on a prepaid plan and buy the Nexus 5 from the playstore? Is there a hassle from switching to a normal plan to a prepaid plan with T-Mobile?
I would be more than happy paying less to get 200mins, unlimited text, and data. 2.5 or 5gb before throttling is fine with me.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The T-Mobile $30 plan.. 100 minutes, unlimited texts, 5GB of 4G LTE.
Just add like $50 every month and you'll have around , what.. 275-300 minutes you can use.
But if you're still on contract with T-Mobile, the ETF is $200.
And yes, you can buy the phone from the Play Store.
Wow that's crazy expensive. My T-Mobile plan is $120/month for 3 lines, unlimited everything. Data IS throttled after 500mb though. Not an issue for me since I'm always on wifi. I can bump it to unlimited for an extra $20

Not sure how you're paying so much for the classic 500min plan, maybe you got extra services along with it? Should only be $85/w tax. And if you said you don't use as much minutes then go with the prepaid $30/mo like that person said. Or you can go with straight talk for $45/mo unlimited talk text and web (might throttle 2.5gb). I'm not sure if they are still selling GSM sim cards because they kept being pulled off the shelves.

Well you're on the new simple/value plans that T-mobile has. 3 lines should cost you $90 ($50 first line $30 second $10 add a line) for unlimited talk text and unlimited web throttled at 500mb. You might be over paying as well unless you have the 2.5gb data plan or the jump plan services.

Unfortunately I am over paying by $30. I didn't get the simple value plan. I switched from AT&T right before they ended the classic unlimited contracts. What really sucks is the T-Mobile service went to **** in my area a few days after my "2 week trial period" (that was really maybe a week after getting the phones shipped and activated) and they refuse to help me out in any way. It's a story for another time, but I'm absolutely furious at T-Mobile.
I got the Ptel Paygo plan (on T-Mobile network), I don't really need data (on wifi almost everywhere, with T-Mobile 4G hotspot at $17.50/mo for 1.75gb). 5 cents per minute. Bought a $100 card with coupon for $78, so 2000 minutes for a year. Haven't got my sim yet, will run speed test once I get it.

Yeah, I think I'm being charged $8 or $10 for insurance on the phone.
How exactly do pre paid plans work? I assume the bill won't arrive to my house anymore? Do I have to to to the T-Mobile store before the month ends to pay for the following month before it gets disconnected?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Also if I were to sign up for the pre paid plan. Could I bring the phone to a T-Mobile store and could they activate the new sim at the store or do I have to do it myself online?
Thank you for the responses everyone, i really appreciate it.

That's unfortunate, sorry to hear. So you're on a 2-year contract then I suppose? Did you get basic phones or smart phones when you signed up? If anything you can always try to call customer service (Dial 611) and ask to be switched to the new simple choice plan but they might charge you a $200 migration fee per line. In that situation, you can probably argue that your service has not been working well ever since you got it and hopefully they'll work something out.

The only service that does that still bills to your house is T-Mobile Family Mobile (only in walmart) $39.88/mo unlimited talk text unlimited web 2.5 throttle (3G, some say 4G). That service is no contract and you can set auto pay with your debit/credit card or pay at any walmart location.
Other T-mobile pre-paid services is the "monthly 4G" which you will need to purchase a pre-paid card at any convenience store and refill your service at the end of each month. Or you can pay the balance of the bill online through T-Mobile prepaid website. If you don't pay your remaining balance by the end of the month it will get shut off and I believe T-Mobile will hold for 7-14 days before they release the number.
I can't give you a suggestion on which service you should use because I use both Verizon and T-Mobile services (note 2 and nexus 5) on a dealer line. Believe it or not, T-Mobile pulls off 21mb vs verizon 12mb in my home. If anything i'd start with the $30 pre-paid plan and test out the service to see whether or not it works in your area. If you feel that you get a lot of drop calls, you can try the actual T-Mobile service (Simple choice plan) because it's running on a primary network. Don't want to get too technical on why contracts vs pre-paid services are good or bad.
Replying to your second question:
You can purchase a Sim starter kit on the actual T-mobile site and you can activate it yourself, very easy. Follow the steps and select the plan that you desire.

I will attempt to do this over the weekend. I am on a 2 year contract. When we signed up, I got a Galaxy S3, an LG F3, and an LG F6.
Since we started, none of the phones will reliably get phone calls or text messages. More often than not when people try to call us (even the T-Mobile reps calling me back) the phone will ring on their end, but I never get a ring or even missed call notification. A voice-mail will randomly pop up later in the day. Text messages will stop for hours on end then all of a sudden 10 or so will come to my phone at once. MMS won't reliably send or download. It's been a FRUSTRATING experience to say the least.
