A question regarding g1 software or hardware? - G1 Android Development

I am putting this in writing because it makes me wonder. G1 is a great phone , but we all notice that when scrolling through the menu where the applications are,and/or when in the browser , the scrolling is kind of lagged. Or let's say maps or anything else. Its moving kind of laggy. I give the iphone just as an example. One should admit thay the iphone is moving sleek as butter...now my queation is this : is this software differences and the mac is sleeker or? I would love if the g1 moves as sleek as the iphone...or even better. Is this fixable? Is anybody thinking about that or it is just me?

It is noticeable and there has been talk of it on code.google. A lot of the Android dev's either point to memory bottle necks or blame HTC all together.

i think it has to do with the number of apps on the phone and the apps running in the background, i just u[graded to JF's 1.41 and did a wipe and my phone's running like a champ even the battery is noticeable longer. had it on all day and its over 40% charged now im on the border to download any apps

SO I played with the HTC Arrive today

Training device at the story, had my share of time with it today, checked it all out.
Pretty nice keyboard and tilt mechanism, hardware felt awesome in the hand. Software is definitely behind though, multitasking is a no go, software really isnt there for landscape yet which is a bummer with the keyboard.
Netflix worked great however.
Just posting in case anyone here had planned to switch from the epic, I can answer any questions about it too.
Sorry about the blurriness of a few of the pics, I was in a bit of a rush(the public isn't supposed to be seeing the device yet, so taking pictures isn't exactly easy )
Really would appreciate the pics...

Oh don't get me wrong, it's very fast, everything loads really quickly.
Sometimes the transitions get annoying when you're just trying to be done with something..it's pretty though.
The worst culprit is the weather in the HTC hub, switching between cities does this whole cloud moving crazy popup thing, it looks pretty cool but takes about 5 seconds and could be very annoying if you're just trying to check the weather in a hurry.
Apps load really quickly, Netflix took about a minute to load up the app and get into a movie on 3g, quality seemed pretty good.
Battery life seemed good, although I had no percentages to work with, it didn't seem to drain that bad.
One thing I noticed though: In the marketplace, larger apps like 3d games can't be downloaded over 3g, it says "Wifi or PC Connection Required"
Really looking to try a WP7 phone, so thanks for this! Did you get a chance to test out the camera, and was the screen any good?

The camera I only took one picture, it seemed pretty clear! I'll try it more tomorrow and let you know.
The screen and type were very crystal clear, it's SLCD and looks absolutely fantastic, not QUITE the Epic but very good.
Also did you have a problem with the screen being 3.6" instead of 4"

I'm swapping out my HTC Hero for the HTC Arrive on the 20th. Can't wait.
that looks sexy but um yeah.... not into that whole hinge tilt stuff and windows phone 7 is just not hooking me.
I actually really like the tilt feature. It works like a kickstand for the screen so you can use your phone as a desk clock better or watch movies with no hands. I wish there was a tilting android phone.

Reminds me of the TP2 keyboard/tilt. That was the best, most responsive keyboard on a phone I've had.
I'd gladly trade my Epic keyboard for an HTC one... you know if it had a 4" SAMOLED screen...
I love the look of this phone it's just like a perfect hardware specs tp2 and that tilt screen is the one and only thing I miss from my tp2, but WP7 can suck it!! If only HTC released this the time the epic was out and had android on it I would of got this!!! I love the speaker on it too, really sexy phone!!
Set From My 3.0.1 Bonsai Epic 4g
god thats one ugly looking phone.
Nice looking phone. The real questions is, can we get Android running on it...
Probably, the question is why bother? It's last years weakest hardware...even after a port the Shift would still kill it performance wise, and don't even try to compare it with the Epic.
Nice looking phone ughly looking wp7.
never leaving android, atlast for now.

Android Trolls have no reason to post. If you are not here with interest in WP7 or the Arrive, then why are you here except to voice your pointless opinion?
Anyway. I also got my hands on an Arrive for a good bit. One thing about the slider, make sure you don't judge it until you remove the clear plastic protector on the back of the screen part of the slider (the back of the screen with the keyboard out). Until that is removed the slider will feel very wobbly, stiff, or overall crappy. Same thing was the case for our Touch Pro 2's.
The overall feel of the phone is really solid and well made, like the TP2 it feels solid but with the metal back and an actual glass screen it feel even higher quality. (Plus I love the way the screen angles off into the 2 grill parts on the top and bottom.)
The OS performed just as expected with performance never showing any sort of hiccup or slowdown. 3G Speed in the area was a bit poor due to it being a highly populated area that Sprint throttles. (Not a problem where I live). It was not a problem for normal use and web browsing but it did take a hit on Netflix playback, downgrading the quality to extremely low but still viewable quality I suppose.
As mentioned earlier/elsewhere, the one thing that is bumming me is the 3G download limit on large apps. I know it is the norm for most of todays phones but with an Unlimited plan, limiting my download size to 20MB is a real bummer. I hope there may be a way around this in due time. Sucks that they expect you to pay for another service while paying for the same type of service? WTF!?
I did not test this part of the phone out though since I did not want to set it up under my live account.
Other parts of mention was the seamless use of Bing search for various things. Unlike on the TP2 where you click on bing, wait a minute, have to quit back out because you forgot to run quick GPS to keep the sat info updated and of course it never automatically updates on its own, back into Bing and waiting another minute, type in what you want to search for (or click on the appropriate button), it searches and gets you what you may want, you click on it, wait a bit to get options, then finally to what you want. If using the Voice Guidance you have to hope it doesn't crash or lock up partway into your trek.
With WP7 it seriously was click button, 3 sec later your there, type or say what you want, it searches for another 2-3 sec, bamn various things related to your search and picking one only takes another 2-3 seconds. Fast, easy, works.
Sure Voice Guidance isn't in Bing for WP7 yet, but it is coming and till then Sprint gets their own Voice Guidance GPS that actually works ok as well.
There is only 1 Problem (Seams to be lightly known) with the phone. Wifi. Similar to the Video Demo I saw of a GSM UK 7 Pro, the wifi would get stuck trying to connect to a network and eventually give up. In the video he mentioned a hard reset fixed this but being as it was not my phone I did not test this. This looks to be a simple HTC bug and I would guess it would be fixed in a side update separate from other updates soon. Still, a bummer seeing how the phone isn't out yet and it's GSM brother has the same issue.
Either way I pre-ordered my phone and plan to enjoy it. The only thing is my upgrade isn't due till June 14th and well, that is a long way away. So I may buy the phone outright and just learn everything I can for a month. It is not that I cannot afford it, I just don't feel like paying $450 for any phone.
$35 to rent the phone for a month isn't a bad deal though. Did this with the HTC EVO. 4G was Awesome, but the Android os, while powerful, just didn't feel finished/polished similar to WM6.5 Roms.
Sure WP7 does lack a few features we have all known and loved on WM6.X and Android, but for what I use the phone for most, paired with the fact that I am getting sick of the phone having weird glitches, lockups, temporary hangs, slowdowns, and overall things either not working or working weirdly, (also on Android for this), WP7 looks for fix that for me. A phone that does all of the features it offers now and does them well. I used to be a huge tweaker for these devices, but after a while, the time it takes to make the phone work 100% takes way too long these days and especially on the old 500mhz chip, it is just not worth the fuss anymore. I have an HD2 to tinker with and use for certain Apps, and a Dell Axim X50v for my other WM entertainment needs.
Thank IM for that post.....Normally I am not one to read long posts but you covered everything that I was curious out.
I have an EVO right now and even though I love it. I loved my Zune HD a lot more. heres to hoping that the arrive lives up to hype I gave it.

[Q] Vodafone stock issues/Should i buy

Hello all,
Been looking at this phone for a while, want an upgrade my desire as
it just lags bit much more then i like and battery not as good.
My question is:
What is the vodafone stock levels like? Where is the best place to buy i.e. shop , online , phones 4 u.
Ive been looking forums and seen people saying online have been having stock issues , so was just curious?
On a side note , has anyone upgrade from desire/similar and can
say its worth the upgrade? I worked out it only going to cost me around £100 to
upgrade which I'm happy to pay - but is it worth it? (After i sell the phone and cancel my current contract etc..)
Also , how much internal memory has the desire got left to use on first boot?
Not seen a deffinate answer yet? I've heard around 1gb?
Any plus/minus is worth knowing to help my decide?
Thanks
I've heard it's a great phone, with few issues.
But I've heard from some Desire users and DHD users that it's not much of an upgrade, in that you could pass it off as a "Desire-PRO." The feel will be pretty much the same, just with a better camera and touch screen buttons at the bottom. I've also heard that Sense 3 is not that much of a big step up. (the homescreen has a different animation, though)
In my opinion, from a Desire, the only thing your really upgrading to is the new lock screen, speed improvements and more storage.
(There's more RAM, but you get left with 197MB actually available for apps to actually use. On my Desire, I get 155MB left available for apps)
Of course if you a HTC fan, and that's what your looking for, then by all means it's a great phone, after all the Desire was pretty amazing.
If you fancy a change, you could look at the Atrix or GSII (or one of the optimus phones)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't actually have a Sensation, but have been intensively reading the forums for the last month or so. (I'm in the process of deciding what to upgrade as well)
If the QHD screen is not the killer feature for you, you can quite easily run Sense 3.0 on the DHD, as many people are doing already.

I agree. qHD is a "failed" technology. It's pretty damn good, but it's an "inbetween technology." It'll be around for 4-6 months and then we're going to have ultra-high-resolutions in the market, which will simply triumph all other displays.

Thanks for that useful stuff!
im seriously thinking now. I think i would love the bigger screen size and quality ,
im agains the samsung simple for the feel of it, i hate the galaxy s , as i class the feel of the phone as one of the most important (as doesnt matter how good a phone is, if you hate the feel in your hand then not very good)
Im confused about the quote, you mention ram at the start then say only
197mb free for apps,
do you mean there only 197mb internal memory spare for apps?
If thats true that is a big minus!

No, by 197mb RAM i mean that, that's all you have for apps to use - RAM is not storage. RAM is Random Access Memory. Basically the more RAM available, the more things the phone will be able to do WITHOUT lagging up and getting slow.
In the beginning i was referring to 1GB of space of internal storage to store all of your apps.
Cheers for that -
Heard any issue with stock? ideally i want to walk into a shop on Friday and pick one up, might ring first just in case
Hi Phil,
I got mine yesterday from Phones4U, they had no stock problems as far as I know.
It has around 600Mb+ free for app installations (plus the 8Gb SD card of course). As previously mentioned, there is about 200Mb RAM free on boot too.
Only lag I've had today has been when updating the Vodafone settings (data plan stuff) which needed a reboot, but I'm guessing it was just a glitch with one of the apps using the connection at the time, as otherwise, its been as fluid as a, erm, fluid thing.
Battery: pretty much constant web, market and facebook chat usage on 3G, plus a few 3 or so minute calls = down to 12% battery by about 2pm (unplugged 7am)
rp-x1 - Does your Phones4U Sensation have Vodafone branding or is it running Generic Europe firmware?

Thanks useful stuff coming from someone who brought it !
And yer the screen and speed are my biggest wants . 600 mb is plenty so that sorted that problem!
Im edging towards it closer and closer! Specially as my desire battery seems to be dieing , i was one first to get one before the release date so had it 15 odd months and battery life getting worse and worse.
Also thinking of upgrade from Desire to Sensation but worried about losing the optical joystick (or whatever it is called). I seem to use it a lot for close up fiddly movements of the cursor. Does new software cope without it? Do any new phones still have the hardware?

I was worried the same untill i played with my boss's desire s (without the trackpad)
HTC/android has some new little arrow buttons you can use to be more accurate which is why the trackpad has been removed on all new phones.
Takes a while to get used to it but it made me happy not getting a trackpad

Hi, it has Vodafone branding, but can only see the Vodafone logo on boot and a 360 app in the list. Otherwise it 'looks' largely untouched

The few, the proud...

I am going out on a limb here and share my deepest feelings with all of you.
I LOVE my g2x!
There, I said it. I feel a little vulnerable right now... may need a hug.
There is so much anti g2x here and it makes me sad. This is a great phone. Nay, a great big beast of s phone. It has it foibles(bet you don't hear that often) but they will be worked out. I had a troubled phone for a while... reboots, battery heat up, etc... didn't return it, but I kept fiddling with it, removed some apps, messed with settings, trolled the forums and I haven't had a reboot in a week! Runs as smooth as aloe vera lotion now.
I think that people are jumping ship too early, and for the Sensation?!? Really?? That phone is also having issues with reboots and stuff not working... PLUS it is slower, has an iffy screen and runs Sense!
So if you do trade down for that other phone... just go, and stop telling us about it.
Good luck and we'll see you when you come back...

Its a gorgeous piece of hardware, with a really solid cameras, and I'm loving having the speakers in another place than laid flat on the back.
Not being satisfied with the dev support, which is kind of more a privilege than most people here realize, made me realize that having a phone that works more often than not is worth running on Stock(with root and a few choice mods).
Having been around since 1.5 dropped, I thought about what I needed in custom roms then vs what I need now. The G1 needed severe performance boosts to operate like the current crop does on its worst days, apps2sd and keeping an ext partition for caching on was important. I got my power control widget and navigation in 1.6 (I was a big fan of SuperD roms) and I was ecstatic.
Fast forward and I get damn near most of that right out the box. do i need the miscelleaneous features of cm7, like notificationbar power controls? Nope, I can go back to living like I did with my eclair Nexus One(and then with CM6) or my G1.
So comparing the current offerings to just stock, I dont feel like im at a total loss. It's just the way this phones lifespan panned out, and really you cant win them all.
And I am definitely not impressed with the Sensation and Sense3.0. My boss broke the volume key on the store demo the day he opened the box. Dropped it once and the rocker snapped out in the worst way. weird design choices all over that phone.
I really think the dev support will happen when GB drops. Then we can find the new things we didn't know we couldn't live without.
God, remember 1.5? Seems like so long ago... I remember way back when jesusfreke was showing us the what was possible, and when cyan got his cease and desist letter from google... my G1 will always have a special place in my heart...

I love using the G2X and I'm glad I get to keep her. She will be my hacking/gaming phone. Both the G2X and the Sensation have there own problems like you said. I was just lucky enough to get two bug free devices. As said in my review, I think the G2X has a smoother UI and is very responsive. That being said, the. Sensation doesn't even come close until you disable all of those silly animations on Sense. Some games run better on the G2X and some run better on the Sensation. Homerun Hartford 3D for example runs smoother and looks better on the Sensation but dungeon defenders runs smoother on the G2X. Everyone just needs to start making there own decissions and stop making posts like "Bellow Sensation. Bye G2X". I picked the Sensation as my daily driver due to the larger display without being bigger that the G2X. The colors are sharper and appear to pop more on the Sensation but the blacks on the G2X a great. When both devices are sitting right next to each other its unbelievable how muck crisper and clearer the text on the Sensation is. I also use the camera a lot and the Sensation takes much better photos and HD video. Both devices are great but I would say to someone who puts gaming at the top of there smart phone list, get the G2X. If your priority is emailing, web browsing, RSS, ebooks and taking pictures then get the Sensation.

i'm still a fresh new owner of my G2x (got it yesterday). but i've already thrown on 3 custom roms and have decided to stick w/the mcr GB leak (2.3.3) since its more vanilla than CM7. CM7 is just WAY to much extras i don't care for; i wish they had a kitchen sink option like paul's MCR roms do. i love being able to pick and choose what items and tweaks.
anywho, i've been an android owner since the N1 dropped and must say that it almost seems like its more people tinkering with an OS and parts they shouldn't be or don't understand. permission changes on a system file can cause your phone to do some crazy things, i've done it a few times myself (get in a boot loop by renaming a system sound or font, etc)
the G2x's hardware specs made me drop the full off contract price on it. i'm just hoping we see the GB roms mature even more, hopefully once the official GB hits; we'll still have some devs w/one that will update their roms.
sure would love to see a Honeycomb port. this thing has the specs.

Another satisfied G2X owner right here. Got mine off some guy on Craigslist before I'd read about all the issues people were having. I think I only kept it stock for maybe 1 day before rooting it and flashing roms on it. I've been using it for over a month now and I haven't once regretted buying it.

Have you tried the Ultimate G2X rom?
It has been my daily driver for a couple of weeks now and I have had absolutely no issues with it. It's based on Froyo so all of the hardware works as it should (no wonky battery issues, HDMI works, GPS works, etc). It has a very nice dark theme to it (I never liked the light colored stock Froyo), and is very snappy and responsive.
It's a very nice rom indeed. Very fast. Very stable. And everything works.

+1 for the Ultimate Rom. I've been using it since the day it was released with zero issues. But...Faux's Rom is starting to look VERY interesting...
I've been a pretty vocal complainer about this phone. I've gotten four. But my complaints have mostly been about the lack of real support and communication. It sucks that LG and Tmo put us all in this position.
I'm getting the Sensation tomorrow. I got the upgrade price. But I'm only considering it a bridge phone until the bugs get worked out of the G2X. When I thought I only had the option of one phone, I HAD to leave for the Sensation. In my case I initially chose the G2X knowing about and comparing it to the Sensation. Sensy is indeed a great phone, but side by side, we all know the G2X is just.....well, better!
But my cell phone is my primary communication device, I don't have a wired home phone. I've had reception issues and it has been too buggy to use the basic features. Not having a choice I was forced to move to the Sensy.
But being in this position, with both phones, changes the equasion. I get the luxury of waiting for the update. I've now decided to request a fifth one after all.....just because the screen bleed IS definatively worse on this fourth one. But if they refuse, I still feel like the screen bleed is a non issue in everyday use. But it appsolutely screams at me when I turn the phone on....
I truly believe that all the other issues will be fixed with the updates(s).
I've spent the last two days putting the phone back where is was before my reset last weekend. I've had no reboots all week, but my data has been giving me fits. I've missed not playing with it this week, so couldn't resist putting it all back. Supposed to get Sensy tommorrow.....have such mixed feelings. This sucks....got two beautiful phones and so conflicted and angst-ridden. I guess I can think of worse positions to be in LOL.
Happy Fathers day to my fellow fathers. And all you mothers for putting up with us!

There is no doubt in my mind that the G2X is snappier and more responsive than the Sensation within the UI but in my mind there is plenty of other things that go into making a phone better. Yes, I care about speed and power but when the ONLY difference in speed I see is in the UI, it's not a big deal in my opinion. The G2X's display does have better blacks but the Sensation has better colors, sharper text, bigger display and a brighter screen. When both phones are in direct sunlight, it's not even a close race. The Sensation wins hands down.
Applications run just as fast, if not faster on the Sensation. One of the only games I play religiously is HomeRun Battle 3D and it is in fact smoother plus looks a lot better on the Sensation.
When you finally get to use the Sensation you will realize that the only thing the G2X does better is a speedy UI. Everything from the camera to the contacts app is inferior.
In the end, I wish I liked the G2X better since I paid retail price for it and even though mine barely had any bugs, the Sensation is still the all around better phone.

I can't speak to the differences in the screen because I've only used the G2X in everyday situations. I do know that I have no trouble reading my screen in sunlight.
As for the different UI and different camera, etc that you mentioned, I think you're overlooking the fantastic hardware that makes up the G2X. I'm not knocking the Sensation because it may be a better solution for some. But I am very very satisfied with the G2X. Many of the roms that are out now have ironed most of the issues and made this phone extremely reliable. I don't have any issues with mine. And I can flash any camera, homescreen app, etc I want and customize to my hearts content.
My point is its a great piece of hardware that has some buggy software from the factory. Iron out the bugs and this thing flies.

I have had my phone for about a month now, hated it at first but have slowly gotten it to the point of stable and fast.
Running CM7 builds for two weeks now (since the bugs have slowly gotten worked out). No reboots or issues, data is fast, battery life is good and everything is just "snappy".
I have given up on LG support for this phone, I won't be buying another LG phone again. Rushing this product to market and abandoning it shows that they hold the consumer in contempt. Hardware and build quality this phone is amazing, software support is terrible.
If LG was smart they would release their source for the phone and allow the true experts (rom cookers) to have their way with perfecting it, LG's software team isn't worth the paper their over sized paychecks are printed on.

Flashing all the camera apps in the world won't change the actually camera. When I said camera, I meant it as in hardware, not software. If you want to talk software than I can tell you, I think the G2X camera app is better than the Sensations. By the way. My G2X really didn't have any bugs at all except for some minor screen bleed. I thought it was a pretty reliable phone if you ask me. I know I'm keeping mine for a little bit so I have something to hack until HTC unlocks the Sensations bootloader. Lastly, I didn't really have any problems reading my G2X in sunlight either but it doesn't mean something else can't look better.

[Q] Sense 3.0 lag,unresponsive touchsreen,lousy battery life... Evo3D better choice?

Hi mates, I've been reading up on comments, reviews and opinions on the Evo 3d and Sensation for the past few weeks and am already getting headaches from it. Now I'm at the brink of buying one of these (preferably this week as my iphone makes me sick more and more).
Your opinion is very important to me as I'm about to extend my contract for 2 years!
I don't need the 3d, but I'm having the feeling that the Evo3d is the overall better device. However, the bulky design and the inferior camera make it hard not to go for the Sensation (especially since I don't give a damn about 3d).
What I need to know from you guys are the follwoing things:
1. The Sensation's been known to have a slight lag in Sense and overall slower performance compared to the evo 3d. It was said many times this could be due to software issues. Has the performance since been improved in a way that it's on par with the Evo? Are the European units any better/different than the American ones?
2. I live in Europe. Are chances high I will get a faulty unit with a bad touchscreen? It seems to be a hardware issue so I guess there will be no software fix and sending the unit in 5 times with weeks of waiting in between is a dealbreaker for me.
3. I have read many reviews saying the Sensations battery life is superior to that of the Evo 3d and I have read just as many reviews that claim the opposite.
I do the occasional surfing while in train/bus, maybe 1-2h of music listening, checking emails several times a day and use google maps+GPS from time to time. No 3d use, movie watching or hours of gaming intended. Which one will serve me better?
The Sensation is slicker and doesn't have the ugly and unhandy camera-bumps like the Evo, but I'm very allergic to lag so if the Sensation is just underpowered compared to the Evo, i'll go with the snappier of the two.
Thank you!
As far as I know, the EVO 3D is pretty much identical hardware to the Sensation. And it also runs Sense 3.0. Check here for a comparision: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3901&idPhone2=3875
With a custom Sense ROM, it is much more smooth.
Really don't see why the EVO 3D performance would be THAT much better then the Sensation...
The touchscreen isn't a problem. The only issues seem to be on the lockscreen, so it's software.
I don't see the reason either (apart from 1gb ram over 768mb) but apparently the Evo runs soomther plus i hear the sensation starts to show lag over time...
anyways, evry review says evo is snappier... i just wonder whether thi sis soething that can be fixed by updates or if it is due to bad hardware
My experience is limited to the Sensation only, but:
1. Yes. Annoyingly so. Stock performance on the Telstra model isn't very good. I've used three units and all have been identical. Once you S-OFF, install a custom ROM and a custom kernel, the problem is lessened somewhat. Sense 3.0 seems to underpin all the problems with this device.
2. Completely random. Out of the dozen or so people I know who own Telstra units, I am the only one with a 'good' Sharp panel. There's not a lot of difference in the picture quality of both screens, but there is a definite difference in the ghosting while scrolling. Mine's better, but it's still there. Looks to me like a refresh rate issue, but I'm not sure. Apparently the digitiser can 'de-sensitise' over time, I've had mine a fortnight and no issues as of yet.
3. I find the Sensation's battery life admirable. After a moderate day's use I get home with 80-60% remaining. I don't OC, I use WiFi all day at home and HSPA when I'm out, make a few calls, send maybe 80 texts, download a few apps and listen to music for an hour or so. Even after a solid hour of continuous Market browsing, I'd reportedly lost <10%.
Good luck in your choice!
Those side-effects are all results of Sense. Just install CyanogenMod or any other AOSP ROM (when they're released) for a much, much better experience.

Absolutely.
I've never been a fan of CyanogenMod, but I will say that I am very much looking forward to it becoming available for the Sensation. The Alpha AOSP ROM looks promising also!
Thank you very much juzz86 and the others. Your post was very helpful. The thing is, I WANT Sense 3.0. If it was for the hardware alone, I'd go with the SGSII, although it's butt-ugly and feels like a child's toy in your hand. The Sensation's hardware is not so sensational when you compare it to other flagship phones. It's Sense that is making me want a HTC phone, but if the darn device can't handle it, despite dual core fanfare, I don't want it.
I'm so disappointed in this device It should have been everything the SGSII is, but with better design and Sense on top.
Anyways, the Evo seems to deal just fine with Sense 3.0 (at least that's what I read). I think I will give it a shot then, but not before I actually had the device in my hands. I'm a Pperson that is rather careless with it's phone. My iphone survived just fine because of a rubber case that saved it many times. But The Evo has ONE big glass plate in front of the two cam lenses... one unfortunate drop and goodbye picture taking.
I will have to think about that and see how the device actually feels...

Sounds like a plan. Don't drop the coin on it unless you're happy (only stupid people do that... ).
A recommendation: If you love Sense, and daily performance is more important to you than what looks good on paper, the Incredible S is an extremely good choice. It's 'just' a single-core, and it runs an older Sense, but it absolutely runs rings around the Sensation. The only real difference between the Sense version is the lockscreen, which is the only 'plus' I've come across in Sense 3.0
Thx for the advice, but I think it's rather stupid to buy a single core mobile in the age of dualcore processors and quadcore soon to be unleashed onto the world. I don't care if my Lambo is slower compared to a F1 Ferrari, but that don't mean I 'd go with a Fiat too
One more question regarding the lag/slowness of the phone: Is it sluggish out of the box or does it's performance degrade over time? How bad is it?
I often hear people complain about ceratin bugs, but only few seem to feel bothered by the performance...

For me it was slow out of the box. But I just flashed InsertCoin and it's very smooth compared to stock. CM7 will be even smoother

I don't know whether I should be happy or afraid because of that :O
Will CM7 still have Sense 3.0 or is it something completly different? I'm new to andorid, sry have no clue about it... Just saw that InsertCoin still has it.
I just read that the European Version of the Evo 3d isn't h4ackable as of now Different bootloader version or sumthin...
Yeah great, now I'm reconsidering the Sensation with a custom ROM. Geez this is getting old now...

CM7 will not have Sense at all. Most of the current crop of ROMs available still have Sense - even those that offer a 'sense-less' option still have the underlying frameworks included.
For me it was untolerable out of the box. I'm very susceptible to lag though.
I stick by my recommendation of a good single-core over a dual-core at this point. If it's fluid and quick in everyday operation, do you really need anything else? It's all just hype at this point, and the real-life benefits of dual cores aren't here yet.
I've ditched my Sensation for a Sharp SH-12C and it stomps all over it with just a single core and it does (pretty cool) 3D to boot. Pretty hard to come by, but so far a very polished package, and I'm getting much more enjoyment from it than from the Sensation.
I'm a big fan of stock android. I love cm can't wait for it to become available. That would definitely speed up things. Not sure I care about sense.
On another note I completely abuse my phone as far a use goes. WiFi on all day now Bluetooth too. I get 5.5hrs on a full charge. But again I completely abuse my phone. I listen to music all damn day I have a car charger so I'm happy and love my phone.

I was sick of waiting and got the sensation yesterday. Haven't had too much time to spend with it but so far things are looking good, and it's fast, I see no lag. Only thing that's bothering me is te free memory, which is somewhere around 100mb usually. that's kinda lame. Why on earth did HTC not include simply 1gig?
No I wonder which rom to install. I figure crystal pyramid isn't too bad?

Task Manager is showing the wrong amount of RAM, go to Settings-Applications-Running Services and check there. I agree it should have been 1 GB though
For a ROM I recommend InsertCoin 2.3.4 because it's very fast However, maybe you will like another one better, so try them out and use the one you like best.

Glad to hear you got a good one mate, nice job. I was also a bit skeptical of the reported RAM under the task switcher, seemed very low. As stated above, it appears to be a bit off. Uninstalling Sense actually freed up about 80MB for me, so hopefully something like AOSP will free up even more and make it really sing.
Crystal Pyramid is very nice. You won't be disappointed with any of the custom Sense ROMs at all, they're all nice and slick.
Enjoy!
I also have problems with the fact that the phone is so slow, and i was expecting much much more from it,i couldn't wait to finally get my hand on a Sensation .I have the stock rom with no modifications, but my Desire HD was also stock and it worked perfect, with no lag.I was playing Angry Birds Rio yesterday and the phone had lots of lags(like a video with low frame rate),and there wasn't any running program in the background .The Desire HD never had this problem, even if there were programs running in the background, the phone worked flawlessly.I am starting to regret that i sold the desire hd and bought the Sensation.

iPhone 4S for a day :O

So it turns out I forgot my phone at home today (something that almost never happens) and I snagged my dad's iPhone 4S to stay connected.
This is coming from an Android fanatic (I love my Android dearly), I will cover everything I noticed throughout my day of use.
This phone is a battery hog! The setup was power intensive for sure (GPS, wifi, and 3G data on, screen brightness 100% auto), but I barely made it through the day. Started off with 69% at 7:30am. Went all the way down to 10% by 5pm, with not too much usage (a little light web browsing and a few phone calls). You can physically see the percentage go down with every minute you keep the screen on. And the phone gets pretty warm with the slightest of use.
Call quality is exceptional. Voices sound very clear and deep, even in noisy environments.
I miss my physical keyboard I really don't know how some users can switch away from the physical keyboard. The problem is, it takes up so much space that you find yourself browsing around on such a small portion of the screen sometimes. It also doesn't get out of the way on demand, which is annoying. And editing anything is a real pain, especially because there's no trackpad to precision movements. Essentially you have to hold and use the magnifying glass to get around and edit text. Auto correct is very annoying when trying to type custom words.
iOS lags! It's just not as noticeable and in much fewer places vs android, but it will lag if you try to scroll fast through facebook posts. I actually prefer the scroll in android more than iOS. It has less weight and scrolls for longer with less flicks.
Screen is terrifically bright. No problem seeing it, even outside. Albeit a little smaller than I'm used to, it's a superb screen.
Voice mail is complicated and Siri kept activating every time I listened to voice mail. I don't know why. On top of that, voice mails play through speakerphone by default. Which means everyone can listen in on my private messages
I don't like the fact that there are no navigation buttons except for the physical home button. I like to have a dedicated button for going back and home.
iOS doesn't thread applications the same way Android does. If you click on something from one app (such as a link) a new app opens. But there's no way to go back to the old app without multitasking your way back. You can't simply press back like in Android.
I miss the fact that there aren't any widgets.
The iPhone sorely needs a notification light. I found myself waking the phone all the time just to see if anything was going on.
Design is great. Phone feels more solid than any phone I've ever owned. You pick it up and you instantly know you're holding a high end device. But I was so scared of dropping it all the time. Glass is not forgiving when dropped (no wonder nearly everyone has a case on their iPhones)
I will update this review as I see fit.
It's my honest opinion of my experience.
Feel free to chime in (NOT troll). We should be past that stage by now, seriously...
Just a quick note. If you jailbreak the iPhone, you can install Widgets, but even then they're no match for Android ones. Apple just targetted a different audience I guess

Yeah I have a jail broken iPOD and you really have to watch what tweaks you install or it can really bog the system down. And even after it was jailbroken I still have the "oh I miss my Android" feeling everytime the iPOD is in my hands. It was slow before and after the jailbreak, playing swamp people was laggy and made it a stove top with the burner on high. The battery lasts for me but I don't do much but facetime with my daughter. I love electronics no matter who makes it as long as its a worthy device and I think all iDEVICES are dumb phones with a pretty touch interface and a halfway decent camera. But this is all my opinion. I will never go back to an iPHONE either, I had the 3G and man it wasn't what I wanted in a smartphone at all

Just a note the iPhone is for users who don't need the phone for entertainment (mostly anyway) its meant for people that like their phone to be simple and to just "work". Android was meant for users like us who like to tinker and get the best from our phones. Overall, the iPhone and android phones can't be/shouldn't be compared because their meant for to different types of users.

I love iOS I'm hoping for a 3.8" iPhone 5. Personally when it comes down to me, I just love phones. Gimme a Blackberry and I'll be happy. Everything can been hacked to work how you see fit. You can even underclock the iPhone! Just need to understand there file system. I've never used a non-jailbroken iOS device. iOS is **** with out a Jailbreak(But again I have this subconsciousness thing about not hacking hack-able things) So it might be OK Stock. I don't hype into "Stolen features". We all know where that leads, in the end it's giving the user what they need. At least company's are trying.
Gimme a bigger iPhone I wan't Final Fantasy built Nativity for my device! I miss these.

The problem is battery, that's all. They couldn't cram any bigger capacity in there anymore.
It is too small capacity, basically akin to our "original" HTC battery crap, you wouldn't last with our "original" through the day either, yet you won't call Doubleshot a "battery hog", right? (and I'm not defending iFail here, just pointing out facts... I always stay away from any proprietary junk such as _all_ Apple products)

Voicecall quality mainly differs by networks and the phone's actual speaker's size, in that order. Anything else plays insignificant role.
To truly compare you must be on the same network, and since you've said it was "exceptional" I assume your Doubleshot's quality was much worse - which would indicate different networks to me.
On the other hand the first iFail had spekaer about twice the size of the one in my Kaiser, therefore on the same network iFail sounded way better than Kaiser... Don't know what are the speaker sizes now in our Doubleshot and latest iCrap, but it is possible it may have larger speaker too (bigger membrane = better)
/edit try this: call iPhone to iPhone on diffrent networks (or any exactly same phone models on 2 different networks). Most likely you WILL hear voice quality difference we did this test long time ago using Rogers and Bell, and difference was very noticable. Just make sure to use really different networks, not just different providers on the same network such as Chatr & Rogers in Canada; I don't know exactly about US, but I know you guys have only 3 or 4 really different networks (and 100 different providers using them lol)
Personally I used to use Rogers and Wind (now almost only Wind) and with my MT4GS same voicecalls (i.e. from my home) over Wind sound cheap and thin, while wwhen on Rogers they sound fuller and louder (or so it sounds).

That is the same "category" as lack of physical keyboard. Adding buttons would make it look less "exceptional", same goes for keyboard... "ain't gonna happen", ever, iFail must *look well* first - usability is it's distant second priority...

Not "different audience" at all! Wrong assumption, sorry
THAT is the most serious shortcoming of iOS in general. The notifications ... "subsystem" (or whatever it is called) has always been a problem of any iOS device. Unless Apple will redesign it (read: write new OS from scratch) it won't change, ever. iOS is perfect for iPod, not for devices where constant background infos/notifications should have been shown on screen... (google it!)
Same goes for multitasking, they didn't really solve it but did a major workaround rather, kinda like calling hyperthreading a dual core (again - google it)

(and yes, I think iPhone looks UGLY when it is wrapped in any protective covers, especially all those popular ugly gel-alike plastic "condoms", and so are any other phones too)
Oh and 1 more case in point: coworker bought iphone because it was "so thin and slick". Guess what: his iphone with that ugly rubbery-gel "wrapper" he covered it with immediately, is thicker than my MT4GS (and ugly!) yet he keep saying his iFail is thinner... lol lol lol
...just my few canadian pennies
I will concur, iOS and Android are for totally different people. They're two different takes on accomplishing the same tasks
Another note, stock alarm app was way too simple in iOS. Almost no settings at all
@OP: very interesting, thanks for the honest feedback! From an experienced Android user
