cab luvin' dvd player - General Topics

sooo, because i'm a cheap basta*d i'm going to buy a dvd player with gps for my car on ebay and i've noticed a lot of them, or even all of them?, run on windows ce. So here's my question, will any cab run on windows ce? i mean, winmo 5, 6, 6.1 and everything before that ran on windows ce right? so how easy would it be?
Picture this, a 8-16gb sd card, jam it into the card reader and start up S2P (slide to play) for one bad ass cover flowin' music center! obviously other thing would be useful to, and since these bad boys are only like $300 buckaroos it isn't a bad idea, especially for us gadget pr0n guys right?
what about flashing a rom from a SD card (only heard rumors/speculation about that, probably not possible)? or just loading up manila 2d/3d via throttle launcher and getting the think looking pimp? no phone antenna, no problem, just sync it through the bluetooth and make calls (new app required i'm guessing, or at least adapt/beautify some existing cab/exe). get internet sharing to work on it somehow and you're seriously looking at a pretty cool carputer. well, with all i'd want to use one for anyways. Who wants to do more than what a good rom on one of our phones can do while in a car anyways?
I'm not sure if it will run out of the box like that, with nothing more than some cabs on and sd card, or if you have to do something else (file explorer and whatnot), but i figured xda would be the best place to start for the right answers. I've never gone wrong before with you guys, so speak up! let's see what we come up with!
or at least give me a link to a better place if you know of one and i'll get off my soapbox...
anyways, i've got access to a few vogues, a wing/herald, and a touch pro to do testing with, along with the dvd player/win CE unit--in about a week or two that is--so i'm more than happy to put it on the table.
Man i hope you guys are reading this and as pumped as i am.
anyways, pm me with anything, or i'll just keep looking to see if anyone else posts here

does anyone know if this would even work?

This could work.
First of all, you need to look up how to disable OEM's shell (factory "software" of the player) and enable Windows CE interface.
Next you either install Handheld PC apps, or install libraries which allow you to run applications from PocketPC.
Myself I tried it with a cheap GPS. Yeah, WinCE + apps are a major step up from maps only, but it is not anywhere close to even a non-phone PPC. Because of, for example, lack of WiFi. The big advantage is, that I can install any WinCE compatible map instead of outdated OEM maps.
Hope I am right, and this helps

Where did you find information about your GPS? I just got one, model# TID-7626GPS that I'm going to try to mod, but i can't find information about how to get the WinCE.
if you could pass on any links to places i could look it would help a ton. For how do disable the factory OEM and those libraries?

First you need to find out real manufacturer of your device. I googled model name you said but there's nothing
Or, connect that device via ActiveSync (yes, the same) and see if there's a file \Windows\autorun.inf
If it exists, backup it. Then change it so it will load \Windows\explorer.exe
That should unlock WinCE UI.
However, the file may not exist. In this case you have to look for instructions over the web.

Blueplayer could = better A2DP sound

If anyone here has tried to use an i.tech stereo headset (like the R35 or S35) or other A2DP headset and has been dissapointed with the sound quality (commonly referred to as a "ringing" distortion or hissing over the sound) using the A2DP for tornado hack, its because the MS Bluetooth Stack isn't 100% compatible with all (most) headsets. Its particularly noticeable on i.tech, but the reduced quality is true on many others as well.
In case you didn't know, Blueplayer is a standalone app that streams music to A2DP headphones even if the phone doesn't support A2DP in its own stack! That means any phone with bluetooth (some even claim older 1.1 devices as well) can bypass the usual MS stack in our devices and stream stereo sound directly to a compatible headset!
The software was written for Nokia S60 devices initially, but there have been Pocket PC and java versions (only compatible with specific phones) released since then as well.
I'm very annoyed by the sound quality of my itech R35 paired with my imate SP5. I'm 100% sure that software such as blueplayer would solve this problem. However, the PPC and java versions don't seem to work on my device.
Can anyone help me figure out how to make this work? I tried extracting the files from the PPC cab file, but its complaining about missing libraries. The install may add some things to the registry that I'm missing.
Better yet, does anyone have anything like this for WM Smartphone?
what are you missing? I got blueplayer running with my S35 and the quality is excellent and range good(for me)...
Unfortunately I am using a Wizard...
I wish I could get it working!
I can't figure out what it is, but I'm having trouble.
Normally I can make any app work (even if its for PPC) by pulling the files off of a PPC installation, and run the .exe on my smartphone and it just works.
But I keep get errors about libraries not existing or being in the wrong place. I need to figure out exactly what happens when the app is installed- what files go where, any registry changes, etc... There's gotta be a way to make it work on smartphone!
From memory,
There are a few files and registry settings that I can remember but barely, but if you want I can try to install it again. I removed it because I don't use MP3s anymore..
Yeah, if you don't mind helping me out, that'd be amazing (also for the smartphone community as a whole).
Why don't u use mp3's anymore?
I can just look up the settings for you, you got to do the work ;-)...
I find them too large for my 1Gb MiniSD, using AAC+ now... nice quality and file size.
Just PM me what you want to know...
Well, I don't know what kind of entries this will place in the registry. To be honest, I'm not sure how to check myself either. Is there a way to tell EXACTLY what a .cab does?
Found it!
Interesting program for those in my situation:
http://thinkabdul.com/2006/12/20/ms...nformation-from-windows-mobile-cab-xml-files/
lets you see exactly what steps a cab installation goes through. Any reg. items, what the actual filenames are, what directories they are placed in, etc...
Amazing little tool.
However, I still haven't gotten blueplayer to work on my sp5... I wonder why?
thanks for the link, I needed something like that as well, going to compare the differences in the Widcomm bluetooth hacks...
BTW, how do you get blueplayer to work on a smartphone anyway without the touch screen?
Oh, simulating a touchscreen is easy... most apps let you navigate using the joystick, but it gets annoying and sometimes a touch is needed to click (for example an ok button).
There's a great little app call SPhelper that places a mouse pointer on your screen that can be navigated using the directional joystick, and "clicked" like a screen tap.
Its pretty cool.
Anyway, the problem is that I can't get Blueplayer to operate, even with all the .dll files in the right places. It says its missing something.

Here's all I know:
I poked around in the .cab installation and found that there are 4 .dll's that go in the \windows dir (msibtstk.dll, msibtapi.dll, CHS.dll and TW.dll), and two .exe program files that go in program files\msi\blueplayer (STLoader.exe, and MPOBCE.exe). AFAIK, there don't seem to be any registry entries that it inserts.
Now, I've done this with PPC apps before, normally all I have to do is run the .exe after all files are in place, and it will work (obviously with some minor annoyances due to missing the touch screen).
However, every time I hit MPOBCE.exe, all I get is:
"Alert
Can't find MPOBCE or one of its components. Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available."
There's gotta be something I'm overlooking... Anyone?
No man, there are some(I found some) entries, but I thought you were set and removed them already..
will reinstall and get back to you again...
BTW do you do a full backup of your phone? I use SPB backup and it is good..
oh, cool, I couldn't find any... let me know!
entries but not sure if working...
Here are the two registry inputs(rename to *.txt) I found on my system.. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work this time as I am using Widcomm bluetooth stack... wonder why.... Last time I used this was with MS Stack on...

No, that makes sense. The Nokia one is designed to operated by tunnelling through the s60 stack, and the WinCE version was most likely designed assuming the MS one.
No go... I entered all this stuff exactly like you said, and I get the same errors.
Interesting to note is the drivers reg keys already existed!
It appears that the other exe (stloader.exe) did run and I think entered those keys. The actual program tho, seems to not run (and therefore never entered the proper keys, I'm guessing).
Sorry man.. to get your hopes up..
Right now, I got Axim Widcomm Stack running on my Wizard, but still get the memory issue after a long time powering off bluetooth.
oh well, back to waiting and testing new stacks..
Hey, I've got another idea if you wouldn't mind helping me some more...
Could you try to manually install it the way I've been doing on your pocket PC device?
The reason I ask is because it will determine if there's some sort of PPC-specific code (which I don't think I've ever encountered or even heard of before).
I attached the files and directory structure that I extracted from the cab. If you could, please try uninstalling BluePlayer and tell me if you can get this to run by manually copying the files here.
If it doesn't work for you either, than its because my method is flawed and I'm missing something here... and I shouldn't give up yet!
ok, I will give it a go, but most probably I can only go as far as getting the program to run... Feel comfortable with the widcomm stack, don't feel like disabling it..
just give me a few hours.. my stupid SD USB card reader not working properly... got to look for my cable.. damn!!
good news is, the program starts with the exceptions
1)at first start after putting the files in place, the program starts a few times with the L2Cap error...
2)After a few failed restarts, followed by a softreset, the registry settings in drivers(L2Cap..) are in place and the program runs without error.
3)Now it's up to you to test it with MS stack bluetooth on, as I cannot confirmed this for you.. good luck buddy...

WM6.1 Cloning software? Also WM6.1 Webcam software?

- I finally got my PPC set up perfectly how I wanted it and was wondering if theres any kind of application out there that I can download that will make a clone of the whole thing, including the storage card. I was hoping to beable to make something so that if I had to hardreset and I could just run the clone image and it would auto instal and configure everything exactly as it is now.
- Secondly I was trying to find some kind of software that I can run on a desktop PC and my HTC Touch and see on the desktop, what im seeing through the camera on it. Kinda like video conferencing. I've tried Live messenger on it. also Skye just straight up freezes with wm6.1
Any ideas? Suggestions?
SPB Clone didnt seem to work real well. It suggested the clone size would be 15mb when it should be closer to 200mb.
Great Idea
Wish I could help but I'm hoping someone else will answer these 2 questions.... How i'd love to be able to just load 1 image back onto my phone when it F*#$%S up.
Someone posted a link to software that converts your phone to a webcam but it costs and I'm a poor student who can barely pay the rent (had my phone before I became a student in case anyone is wondering)...... A freeware version of webcam software would be great.....anyone?...Bueller? Anyone?
Whats the one that costs money? I'm curious.

How about SPB Backup, isn't that much better. It has an option to backup the storage card too, but it is unticked to save memory consumption.

Child friendly ROM

I was wondering if anyone already tried to create a ROM wich is child friendly.
I have an old Wizard that I might give to my son of 5 to play with.
I also provided a SIM card into the device so that My wife or I can call him when he is at his grandparrents. But most roms provide so many applications and to easy access to the configuration, that it is too easy for my son to screw it up.
So I was looking for a ROM that has an easy menu with BIG buttons.
Most required items requested.
Windows Live Messenger
Games (like bubbe breaker, etc...)
Dailer with only programmed pictures (so he can not call to the bahamas : )
Configuration of the device should be possible after inserting a password.
Anyone any idea?
Bror
Bump great idea!!!
I really like this idea... really like it!
I suppose that with MANILA it is possible to set the contacts programs and and everthyng... I just don't know how to password protect the settings.
How smart is your 5 yearold?
Also, I know that the wizard was built to last, but how do you know he won't drop it?
I think that you should start collecting programs and games. I think that limiting the access to the settings can be done with initflashfiles.dat OEM_LANG.provxml.
You could access the settings via activesync or pocket controler on the computer, and you could also create shotrcuts to all the settings programs on a separate storage card.
If you know of any programs that limit settings for ppc let me know. I really like this idea!!

He is smart enough to watch closely my actions and to copy them directly. Even experimenting and learning from the results. This last thing bothers me, coz I do not want to spend every night to put everything in order.
But I can assure you that he does take care for it. From time when driving I already asked him to pick up the phone and he knows to take care.
I do not think this ROM should need much fancy things...
Call firewall is nice to block unwanted incoming/outgoing phonecalls. So having this in the autostart would be fine.
A replacement for the startmenu but with a password which then gives access to the config settings... (could not yet find anything like this)
On the today maybe 2 manila buttons which is contacts and applications (just a matter of configuration)
Windows Live (so he can send voiceclips in stead of typing)
Lot's of games (sandbox, bubblebreaker)
Browser with youtube support (yes, he knows to handle youtube)
Camera ( He likes to take ugly pictures of his younger brother)
all the rest like mobile office and calculater, ... can be left away...
Of coarse a good configuration of the buttons will be important too
Do you have any idea which should be included ?
Cheers,
SirSkull

Windows Live Messenger for a 5yo? Oh my...
Why not get him a mobile that was actually designed for kids of his age? I heard there is one on the market - makes calls to programmed numbers only, has a few games, plays music etc.
He fancys dad's phone and is keen on the games on it. So since I have a 2nd Wizard here where the screen is slightly scratched, I do not mind giving this to him. He knows how to use the messenger voiceclips, so when he is at home he can use messenger to chat with me. This would reduce the MobilePhone calling costs. And no, skype is no option since I am not aloowed to install this on my company pc + skype is blocked by the firewalls at my work.
Buy him a Nintendo DS. It'll be more expensive, but it'll also be a lot less work at your end, because I guarantee something awful like deleting system files will happen more often than you care to realize.
I foresee many flashings and re-flashings to this phone...
That said, I'd put a manila-flavored ROM on it, and unless you have an unlimited data plan, I'd load Modaco's NoData, lock out all data transmissions except the phone, and remove the shortcut to make NoData harder to find (along with any other settings-related functions. You can also hide the whole Settings directory in QuickMenu, and then turn it back on when you need to adjust something for him.
Parental Controls
I am thinking about givign my 13 y/o one of these as a cellphone... I have an 8925 and so does my older stepsone... MY 13 y/o needs a little more constant supervision.... I am not too concerned aobut bigger buttons and such.. but about child frendly as in parents can have some sort of parental password before the kids do certian things (like Vista does)... Say before he calls someone outside of his contacts list or adds someone to it.... makes a call after a certian time... or even limit the number of min he can use or something.. Any suggestions on any of that?
there is a way to get rid of the file explorer as well as the settings menu. without the file explorer you have no access to the windows folder... but you should also realize that you can not delete files that are in rom... however you still have access to the settings apps in the windows folder.
This is what I would do:
1: delete the shortcuts to file explorer and other program shortcuts and move them into a folder to a blank storage card.
2: set the last programs shortcut in the start menu to "total commander on this storage card. since the program can not be activated without the storage card inserted, you have no access to settings.
3. gather all of the "parental control programs" and post the cabs here on thos thread so that they can be cooked in to the rom, without the shortcuts... shortcuts can be made into a cab... or manual copy/paste shortcuts or even autorun CPY1/CPY2 to storage card upon hard reset (hardware buttons)
I think that the most important part for the parents to realize, is that the child should not be limited too much. this is an opportunity for these youths to get a first hands on experience of technology, as well as understanding of computers.
Up untill now these devices were too expesive to hand off to children, now that they have gotten old and cheap, they are perfect tools to help with a child developing their inteligence (problem solving, writing, counting, organization... etc)
there are enough repressed children without life exerience out there. no sex no drugs and no rock and roll unless it is 20 years old and have been tested and proven by Dysney Corp (who put phalic symbols in every movie)
dont be a fashist parent and keep in mind that kids need to learn from experience. I will not cook a rom that limits that.

Call Firewall v1.4 can block selected incoming and outgoing calls. It only needs a macro application in order to minimize (and maybe save) the application after it started up.

My son is free to experiment with my second device (my wife will become angry when she would read this. She thinks I making a geek of him. I call it technological self deployment )
As a mom of twin 8 year olds...
I cannot cook, however, having 8 year old twins, I know exactly what you are asking for. My kids are techies and love to play around with my wizard, so I think it is safe to say that I understand where you are coming from.
NTS made a WM6 rom quite some time back, which is crazy stable and fast. It is a dinosaur by today's rom standards, however, my kids mess with my phone and it has yet to freak out, crap out, or anything. I would be happy to upload it for you. It is pretty minimal to begin with, and if you add HTC Home, delete a few shortcuts, add one or two programs like tcpmp and call firewall, and some games, I think it would fit your needs. This rom is NOT fancy, does not have manilla, sliders, or any real bells or whistles--it is close to 2 years old, but again, it is crazy stable and seemingly twin proof. The rom is called Jaguar 3.1 if you want to search the threads for it to read up...the links are all dead though. I still have it on my wizard, and while I have tried updated roms, I keep going back to this one because it plays well with children.
Always happy to test this Jag 3.1 Rom. Maybe we can adopt this version into WM6.1
Crazy stable, childproof= yay Jag!!

This link is for Jag 3.1 rom. The rom download links are dead, but if you want to read about it...
As far as childproof roms go, I absolutely swear by Jag!
I can upload it if you want to give it a test drive.
Looks promising... Can you make the rom available too? I'll see what my son thinks about it then.

This is a link to the Jaguar 3.1 rom-- created by nottoosmart.
As I said, it is an older WM6 rom, without any real bells or whistles, but it is amazingly stable and kid-friendly. You can install HTC Home (the version for WM5 works best), call firewall, tcpmp for movies and cartoons (using an sd card for storage) and some games and it would be pretty much ready to go.
I do not know if Manilla will work on this rom as I have not tested it myself, but HTC Home can be customized, thanks to the program by emunutz.
It does support Google Maps, Skype, Skyfire browser and those types of "grown up" apps-- so just because it plays well with kids, doesn't mean it isn't capable of kicking ass.
Enjoy.

CF card not working

I'm very sad and I'm hoping someone can help me with ANY idea that might work. I just bought a LifeView FlyPresenter CF card for my pda because I heard awesome things about it. Unfortunately any and all attempts to install the card so far have been unsuccessful with any driver version I could find. Plugging the card in hangs the pda until I remove it and soft-resetting with the card in hangs the boot process...when I remove it the thing boots normally and then gives me an error box saying it can't recognize the card (which I pulled out) and is looking for me to tell it what driver to use. I tried typing the driver name in the box but that did nothing, probably because I can't get the error box and have the card plugged in simultaneously. The Card is supposedly written for PPC 2002 and 2003 and I figured that it'd be compatible with WM6 but maybe I was mistaken....the software seemed to install normally and the app shows up on the programs list though.
So....I'm hoping somebody can help me either A) get the thing working or B) tell me how to trick the device into acting like a ppc 2003 or something crazy like that so that I can use the card in some limited way. It has a lot of awesome software and full motion video out that I want to take advantage of. Thank you for your kind support.

Aww ****..... Is there anyway to emulate the OS on a wm6 device? I don't care how complicated or weird it is....any means of running the hardware would be better than having to sell this thing after I just bought it.

Sorry, i don't thinks its possible.
Hey have you seen on their website that they have SDK software? I just saw it now. Apparently it allows you to write drivers for whatever platform you want by simply using their dll files and writing the drivers for them. Problem is the link is 404 and I can't find the sdk anywhere else. I know they have the same software for the flycam too. Maybe if we each are able to find our respective versions of the SDK we can both use our hardware again.
Any ideas where I could find the SDK? My methods of searching for things are limited to google but you might know where else such things are likely to be found...

New life to old GPS.

Hmm, ok, I'm here to learn some new things about Mobile Operating systems and software, so I figured a good way to start learning is to ask questions. Anyways, I have an old GPS, a Mio C310x to be exact, anyone who has used it before know's its dead and no longer useful. So, I want to give it another "life" as a possible PDA, or mobile computer workstations. I wanted to know how I can install a new, clean version of WINCE, hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about. It currently has a copy of WINCE 4.2 installed on it. I managed to boot it into factory management menu and found UPGRADE WINCE. Upon entering that screen, I found UPGRADE WINCE FROM USB and UPGRADE WINCE FROM SD. Well, not knowing what to do, I went with USB, apparently Win7 doesn't like it and wont understand it, perhaps I'm missing something? Is there a special software I need? Any help will be much appreciated.
