when i use my xda i click on mobile device in windows explorer and a load of file come up and i can browse all tht dir`s on the xda..
on the xda2 i click on it and nothing comes up...
so i cant axx the rings directory or anything else for that matter..
i can get into the my documents with the shortcut on the desktop but can find any other dir`s....
also i cant get the thing to dial up a isp using cellular oline... it just says no modem at above number (but i dont think its even dialing it!!!..
Please help as i want to add some ring and have a fiddle BUT CANT!!!.

Check the ActiveSynch icon. If it is greyed, it means ur XDA2 is not synchronized/connected to ur computer.
It has to be "light green color" icon.
you its light green and if i double click "my pocket pc documents" from the desktop i can connect to the " My Documents" dir on the phone..
but when i click on the phone icon in explorer nothing comes up whereas on my old xda i used to have all the dirs inc windows and a load of others..

I suffer from the same problem but mine is rather strange. I have an iMate with the latest firmware. My home PC runs Win XP.
On a clean reboot, I am able to access my iMate using Windows Explorer. However, if I pull my iMate off the cradle and put it back on later, Windows Explorer will show me a blank directory and no amount of refreshing will cure the problem! I have to REBOOT WINDOWS before it will see the files again!
I am most annoyed with Microsoft. I have been using Palm for the past 5 years and have never had a problem like this.
I've run across the same problem using any PDA device (i.e. not only XDA2/MDA2) running WM2003 and ActiveSync 3.7.1 on a WinXP machine. Suppose it's got something to do with the AS 3.7.1 and WinXP being used together as I'd never had similar issue with AS 3.x on the same PC. Moreover, all runs just fine even with ActiveSync 3.7.1 on a PC with Win98.
What helps to solve the problem for me is closing the open window previously used for browsing the PDA and then opening it again by either hitting the Explore button in the ActiveSync window or clicking the Mobile Device icon in My Computer.

Just so you guys know, I managed to fix the problem by uninstalling ActiveSync 3.7.1 and reinstalling AS 3.7.
I noticed a lot of these problems also go away if you close all open explorer windows on the XP machine and then retry. Some caching bug probably...
I'm putting this under General because I don't think it's specific to any phone. I have the Sprint Mogul and updated to the 3.16 ROM. I've only done a few other tweaks and added HTC Home. My issue is everytime I connect/disconnect to my PC via USB, ActiveSync starts and then Windows Explorer opens. I don't know why Windows Explorer opens, but don't like it. Is there some way of turning this off?

Yes, I'm experiencing the same, but It looks like there is no hope. Another folk posted it in microsoft forum and someone called "help_line" gave some couple hints but couldn't figure out the problem and left us alone.
its probably some type of autorun.......
i would imagine it is computer side, not phone side.
Hehe this is an old windows problem. What happens is that a program tries to launch another program which is located in a folder containing spaces, such as "Program Files". The path to this program should be enclosed in quotation sign to avoid this problem. You need to fins out which program AS tries to open, find it in the registry and change it. For example if your path is this:
C:\Program Files\myprogram\foo.exe
change the string to
"C:\Program Files\myprogram\foo.exe"
I had the same problem and a search found the answer. It's in the registry on your PC somewhere. There's a setting about wehat the PC does when it detects a connection through ActiveSync (and another action for disconnecting). You have to delete those keys.
The Registry Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\AutoStartOnConnect]
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\AutoStartOnDisconnect]
I deleted those keys and it stopped happening. I think something corrupts them. They re-appear later but without the problem.

I'm new to the forums, but after running into you guys every time I try and google something related to my Treo 750, I wanted to share my two cents.
I've been looking for a way to stop the "automatic activesync" thing that everyone seems to be complaining about. I have a new Treo 750 running WM6out of the box. Everything I've seen has not worked, short of totally killing activesync entirely.
Now, I can't guarantee that it works, or that it's safe and has no other side effects! Use your own judgement, I'm by no means a Treo or WM6 expert.

1) Install RegEdit on the Treo

You put it on the treo itself, and run from the treo too.
You can't use Mobile Registry Editor for this. You get "Access Denied" errors on the key. You have to run this prog directly from the Treo.
2) Edit registry entry on treo:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ActiveSync\Engines\{guid}\Settings\SyncAfterTimeWhenCradled
The original value is 5 (5 minutes? Like how often ActiveSync seems to run? hmmm!). If you change it to 0, it will revert back to 5. Instead, change it to something like 300.
Then SOFT RESET THE TREO! Changes don't take effect until you restart windows, remember the old days?
3) Edit this registry entry on your COMPUTER:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\#####\Services\Synchronization\Continuously Update
Set it to 0. This is the fix that didn't work anymore, I dunno if it has anything to do with anything but I set it and it didn't destroy anything
So, now what will happen is you'll plug in your Treo. It will sync ONCE. Then it should shut up and not sync anymore until you click the Sync button. I think the "automatic syncing" was the activesync on the TREO's doing, not the activesync in windows. It's that WM6 registry entry that controls how often it goes. I presume now, the Treo WILL sync five hours from now since I set my setting to 300, but I'm sure you can set it to 999 or something and get a sufficiently long time that it really doesn't matter.
As we speak, my Treo has been plugged into the USB charger for a good 15 minutes while I wrote this post, and it hasn't woken up or done anything!

Here's one other thing. If you go into the registry on your COMPUTER:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\#####\Services\Synchronization\Enable Sync
And set that to 0, when you plug in the Treo it will pop up an error saying that it couldn't sync the device and see the windows troubleshooter for more info. Then it signs you on as a "guest" on the Treo. I imagine you could make a REG file or something that turns this on or off.

Oh, an update, it appears when I go into the sync options in ActiveSync on the computer and enable syncing "Media", e.g. windows media player library... it syncs continuously all the time forever. The "Media" part of the sync progress seems to behave differently on its own.
I guess syncing media is different? I dunno. Try it with it turned off.

Have you tried setting up an exchange server account?
What I have done was to go into...
Programs>Active Sync>Menu>Configure Server.
At which point it will ask you for Server Info...\Type in...
"fake" then next
User Name & Password can also be "fake">next
then uncheck all the boxes.
Once you do this the "Schedule" & "Options" menus should be available.
Click on Schedule & change the settings to "Manually"
& check off "Use above settings when roaming"
This will have your treo only open active sync when starting EVDO, Soft Resetting, Connecting to your computer directly or when you start Active Sync ONLY.
Try it & let me know...

ActiveSync kept coming on after a soft restart (the 'reboot, if you will) - it was driving me crazy. (In all honesty, it should be mentioned that I do not think AS chews up much battery power, memory and/or processor clock cycles, but I just absolutely, positively hate it when programs start themselves up on my (P)PC. I like to be in control!
As mentioned, I've triend the fake server trick to no avail, and I've tried disabling the notification in the notification queue as well - no permanent result, since the entries there seem to be regenerated by some other application. I ended up with several duplicate entries (which were easily removed, but nonetheless, this doesn't seem to be the best way of going about).
Anyway, it seems I've finally found a synthesis of all kinds of help available here on XDADEV (I've been lurking in here for a while) that actually seems to kill off ActiveSync's automatic starting. I am posting this from work in the hospital, so it's a quickie, but bear with me and I'll give proper credit when I can finally attribute at (while at home).
Usual disclaimer: registry editing is bliss, but when you ***** up, it may be that you have to do a hard reset and several hours of work

Can you tell me what program to make the REG file? because I tried Notes but it make the *.PWI format?

The ultimate solution.
Ok here's what you do. The fake exchange server solution never worked for me.
First of all you need FdcSoft's Task Manager program. It is the best and a must have.
Use the Notifications editor to disable the repllog.exe for RunAfterTimeChange.
Use the registry editor to go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync] Change the KeepAlive value to 0. Tap and hold "KeepAlive" (or go to file menu) and select "Export...". (not Export All) Save this .reg file in the \\Windows\StartUp folder or save it somewhere else and copy it there.
Now you will need Ghisler's Total Commander.
Using Total Commander, browse to \\Windows\Startup folder or wherever you saved .reg file. (Windows mobile doesn't automaticaly know that .reg file should be opened with TaskMgr so you have to associate it.)
Tap and hold your .reg file and select Properties. Select "Associate" tab. Tap gray box that says "Associate..."
In "Command:" box browse to the folder where TaskMgr.exe is. (\Program Files\FdcSoft\TaskMgr\TaskMgr.exe)
In "Parameter:" box leave the "%1" there, and type "/silent" right after. ("%1/silent") This will keep a dialog box from poping up on start up.
"Ok" everything and you're done! Enjoy.
I've tried using Resco Explorer 7.05/Total Commander 2.5.1/HTC's Network Plugin
For some reason i can't seem to map network drives.
In resco when i try to connect to a drive it tells me it's not accessible
In Total Commander it just doesn't connect
In HTC's Network plugin it writes: "Map Drive Failed"
-I'm using Vista on the comp i want to share folders in.
-Sharing works fine on all comps other than in my PPC (not password protected)
-It seems as not only it doesn't map the drive but doesn't acknowledge as anything but the computers on the network exist. no folders inside those computers. Thought about changing my ppc's domain but i don't know how to do that.
any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, VISTA FILE SHARING is a bit tricky! You not only have to share that particular drive / folder; you also have to check the settings in the SHARING CENTER - in addition you might have to adjust the file permissions as well.
Everything is perfect on file settings. i have a network running 3 computers and 2 laptops all sharing folders no passwords all permissions set. only thing not able to read the folders is the PPC. It finds the comps on the network but doesn't show the folders.
Did you MOUNT the drives in RESCO? You can't just click on it in the FILE EXPLORER - tap and hold, then select MOUNT DRIVE or FOLDER (depending on what you're sharing).
What RESCO VERSION did you use?

I wish someone would help with this also. I have two computers and 1 ppc on my home network. My ppc(HTC Titan) used to be able to access both computers. Then all of a sudden it stopped working for my main computer(bedroom) with all MY files on it, but it still accesses files on my second computer(upstairs). On the main computer(bedroom) I can access the shared folders of the second computer(upstairs), but the second computer can't access the files from the main computer.I dont know whats wrong, but it seems more like a computer issue. I operate Windows XP on a Dell. The network folder used to work perfectly for me and I can't put my fiinger on what's blocking it.
This might be the wrong thread to post this issue(maybe the wrong website) but I thought I would ask since the issues are similar. If it's a ppc program for accessing the shared folders on a computer, then someone should have a How-To or a check list of how to set both up for the program to work fluently. Can somebody please post what you need to do on the computers to ensure sharability of the file systems.
The reason why this is so important to me is because I have been hooking-up my Titan since may 2008 and I am near completion. I'm totally done adding app's and the functionality of the device is superb except for this issue. Just bought a 16gb micro sdhc card and that works great. My girlfriend just ordered a seido 3500mah extended battery with the door to fit and a rubberized hard case for extended battery fit. I'm so excited about have the best phone setup of my life but I everytime I go back to this issue I get pissed off. It was all good til about 4 months ago and I don't know why it suddenly stopped working. Please HELP!!!
If the HTC Network plugin is not locating your shared files on your network, this likely suggest that it is an issue with your network settings. I suggest playing around with your security settings; however, I just recently had a problem accessing any of my shared files over any of my computers between each other and between my HTC Device. It just suddenly stopped working. I knew that I didn't change any settings myself and had tried many things to try to resolve the problem without success. I then decided to run my anti-spyware programs and Anti-Virus programs and let them run overnight. In the morning, the Anti-spyware removed several things - One was labeled as high risk and the others were low and the Anti-Virus found two high risk viruses. Everything was taken care of automatically and voila - I had no problems connecting to my shared files with my computers or my HTC Device. I ran the spyware and virus check programs again and everyting was clean.
the problem is that i can't even map the drives. i can see the comps on the network using the HTC Network Plugin but can't do anything other than that. when i try mapping a drive it tells me that i can't.. for some reason.
i removed password protection...shared the drive... nothing works.
I am assuming you are trying to connect through WIFI -
Make sure that you are actually connected to your network. My device has on several occasions connected to my neighbours wifi rather then my own - results in not being able to access shared folders
Through HTC NEtwork plugin you are exploring the computer for the shared folders right? You say you can see the computers - when you click the plus next to the specified computer in the network plugin are you getting any results at all there.
Make sure you don't have (I don't know if this is what it is called) MAC address filter or password. One of my friends has an open WIFI Network but has MAC Address filter which stops you from actually being able to use the network. You can connect but that is it. You wouldn't be able to surf the internet at all through WIFI either if this was the problem.
If it is none of these, Maybe it is a Windows VIsta problem - I don't know, I have XP
Do you have trouble connecting to other shared folders on other peoples WIFI networks also? (people who have XP)

Maybe you can review your settings on your device - Anythign that you think might be causing the problem - Describe it here, I will check my device settings (even though different devices - should still be the same - and will let you know if there are any differences. I must go eat dinner right now, but will check back after supper and bathing my daughter and putting her to bed. in a hour and a half two hours from now...
Set your desktop to support NTLM instead of just NTLMv2.
That way I got shared folders working with the HTC Network Plugin and my Vista desktop. Unfortunately some HTC apps (like HTC Camera) only expect your device to have two drives (internal ROM and flash card) so when you mount a network drive, they can't access your flash card.
Well, i can start searching, but if you don't mind, could you tell me how to do that?

I wish it worked for me too, but when I get to the "Group Policy Object Editor" I'm getting lost. I don't see that anywhere. Is my computer missing important files? I'm using windows xp. I hope I don't have to restore the whole computer to get the file sharing working. But if I gotta do it I will.the phone see's the computer, but no file sharing. It is that important to me to share files between my phone and computer. My home setup is sweet, and my phone is an extension of it.
Any Other Ideas
So, I have gone through and done everything suggested here. Lan Authentication, created private network, reconnect, everything I can think of...nothing seems to work
Does anyone have any further ideas about what could possibly work to create a LAN over WIFI?

DONE SO FAR:
Have created an adhock private network...connected to it on my device no problem. But when i go to search for my computer in network plugin under the browse menu it thinks about it and in the end doesn't see anything...
so, at wits end...I know I am new but most of the info over is fairly beyond my level I am certinaly a lurker and no info over at PPC Geeks with solutions...either way alot of the stuff over there comes from over here so thought I would see if anyone had some suggestions.

the WMDC does not run at all on my Vista machine which is Business 32-bit,
i tried to uninstall, install again, reboot, more than 20 times, with no luck
this is making me creazy, i couldn't find someone suffered the same

sounds like a corrupt vista install I would reinstall or restore it back to default

you could try another vista computer to verify
or if you're using usb you could try using bluetooth and virsa versa
personally I never had any problems with vista wmdc
its not showing the interface
my home vista machine is working fine,
my machine, is not, its not yet about connecting my mobile,
the software it self is not showing,
i install it, without any error msg, it shows in the start menu, and in the programs of control panel,
but when i click on the icon in the start menu, nothing show at all,
i belive it should show the interface even if the mobile is not connected yet,

it shows new devices as unknown device then the driver couldn't be found
if it's a work computer they prob just removed the rights of installing new hardware
from your user account
i tried both with my user which is part of the administrators group, and also tried with the administrator account directly,
both resulted the saem
it takes around 1 minute on the "0 remaining time"
then it just hide without saying its finished or completed,
the result is an icon in the start menu,
and in the windowsmobile directory in windows folder, it shows some files, like setup, and drivers
then if i check properties of the icon in the start menu, it shows that its for first time installation,
i click on it, it install again
then the changes are on the windowsmobile folder in windows folder more EXE files are there like WMDC.exe (but if run it, nothing comes out)
if i recheck the properties of the icon on the start menu, there is no more target application, (you could call it broken link)
