Managing Multiple GPRS Access Points / Connections - HTC Vox

Hi everybody. I have more than one GPRS subscription. One is for WAP-Proxy based and the other is data consumption based (say 1$ for 1mb). Now is there anyway that I can guide the application which APN to use (Similar to symbian where everytime one connects to GPRS one has to choose the APN if not autoset in settings).
Any suggestion help is appreciated.
Any reply to my long awaited query?
Actually I wanted to know that if there is some way to maintain multiple GPRS connection (Of same provider) at the same time and use any one of them at any one point of time as per user's choice?

Any reply to my thread?

Try using MoDaCo's NoData application? That way you could toggle APNs. It's system wide, not application wide.

Thanks for the advice. I will try and let you know the outcome.

I was using Leo's, except I had many problems with the SD card reading, so I now switched to Jwright...
Got anything nice w/ videocalls?

1. Written in my signature
2. Currently there aren't any decent WM6 roms with VC. not that important to me really, just a nice feature.
It's written that you use your own private rom- so whats it do that normal roms don't?
Ariel
just took the most stable rom i could find, stripped out the unstable VC, and made some tweaks to it.
such as BT DUN profile, tcpmp + you tube plugin, systray icons instead of htc homeplug, wm5torage, and a WLM version that seems to work well for me.
guess what?
found out it was simple enough to make a cab for MMS settings...
this works out quite nice for arcsoft mms 4.0.27.16
it will add an mms server called "Orange IL".
not sure if it will make it the default one, but its good anyways.
EDIT:
violla! made a GPRS cab also!
(and plz re-download the MMS cab, now i made it work together with the GPRS cab and made it select the correct MMS account by default).
then just install, and select your GPRS plan from the connections panel.
enjoy.
will it work on JASJAR to make it UNTS 3.5
i have a jasjar and like to change ROM to allow faster surfing. will this GPRS help me? Tku

this has nothing to do with the speed of your connection. this only configures the connection settings for you.
htc universal (imate jasjar) is 3G, and you couldn't ever change that. that requires hardware changes.
p.s: woohoo! i've posted 200 messages
Can this be integrated into the network wizard in different roms?

no, network wizard uses its own type of settings.
besides, i couldn't gurantee other rom developers will include my settings inside the network wizard.
just put it in your ext rom and you'll be fine.

Duttys V3 final issues

I would've posted in the V3 thread but since there was the new V4 thread and 300+ pages on there, people might not be as interested to look at the older thread.
So I flashed Duttys V4 rtm but found that there were many bugs and FELT like it was slower than the V3. But with both ROMS I am having problems with sending and receiving MMS. Or at times having a hard time receiving data. It would tell me that I am connected to the net but wouldn't transfer any. I use Opera 8.65 and it once told me it could not find my proxy settings. I've done many many hard resets and a couple radio changes. I get one or the other services. It's either I get my internet or I get my MMS. Never both at the same times. Anyone with input on this?
I'm guessing I must be the only one experiencing this problem then.

Well obviously I have been reading and searching the net plus xda and didn't come up with a resolution hence my question here. And my comment back to Hdstreetglide wasn't meant to be of an ass type response, I told him it was a helpful input but unfortunately it didn't solve my problem. So what kind of an attitude would you have liked for me to have? What would you have liked for me to say?

Are you with AT&T?
Do you have the MediaNet package?
if so, then go to :
start, settings, connections tab, connections, advanced tab, select network.
make sure to select media net on both drop down cells, then on the upper one, click on:
edit, proxy settings tab, uncheck the tab that says "this network uses a proxy server......" , click OK, you might need to reboot your phone and you are set to go.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't you need some sort of data plan to receive MMS? Because it has to connect to Media Net to send and receive. I know when ATT accidently took off my data plan I wasn't able to connect PERIOD. It would try to but then it would give me the system message saying something like "Cannot connect to the answering modem etc etc."

Well what about unlimited messaging bundles? They allow unlimited messages of any sort to any one which includes MMS. When I first got my phone a week ago and flashed it to Dutty's V2 ROM I was able to receive small postage sized picture messages but after I updated to Dutty's V3 and radio I was no longer able to.
I forgot to add that I have an unlimited messaging bundle but no data plan due to the phone always being near a WiFi signal.

IM Communicator

Hello guys. I am fairly new to this world and to this forum, so please take it easy on me.
I use a HTC P4351 Unlocked. I use it on T-Mobile network.
My First Question: The ROM version I have right now is - 4.24.422.1 WWE
Do I need to update it?? Is there a simple way of doing it??
My Second Question: Before I bought this unlocked device, I had\used T-Mobile Wing. This phone had this one app, made by "OZ Messaging". It was a client for AIM/ICQ/Y. Is there a way of getting a ROM with this app so that I can extract it from there, somehow? Or an app of this sort?? Another little problem with it is: I tried several applications like this. I need to have a connection to the internet. I don't have internet option on my phone. What I do have, is unlimited any kind of messaging. My guess is: it used my SMS gateway, since I don't have mobile net.
So to make this simple:
1. I'm wondering if I need to update my ROM?
2. Can I find a ROM, with it, or THAT separate application for my messaging needs? I would need this app to vibrate when my phone is set to vibrate mode? .
3. **VERY IMPORTANT** I don't have "Mobile Internet" on the device. I never never ever did, but that OZ Messaging client was still able to log on any three of those 3 networks. Whenever I needed to log on, in the log in process, it would to turn on my GPRS connection. I set that connection up myself. I found a way. So right now, whenever I send a Picture Message, it turns it on and sends it. I tested it out. Instead of entering a phone number, I enter my e-mail address, and it works both ways, it sends and if I reply to that message I received from my phone, it receives it back on the device. It used that "connection" for AIM/ICQ/Y before on the Wing also.
*** Basically the app needs to have a SMS gateway! ***
Is there an app that can use that kind of a connection/or is there a way for me to find this one?
Guys, please be as simple as possible. I'm not a "guru" in this field.
Thank You People. I hope I’m posting my question in the right spot, and I hope to get some help on this. Thank You once again.
use the search engine here in the forum "oz communicator" the cab is here in the forums just search for it hope this helps

Hey. Even if I find this *.cab file. I don't just need to find this *.cab file, but also need to figure out how to make this app to turn on the GPRS. That is what it did on my old T-Mobile MDA and on T-Mobile Wing. It used that connection to log in, and to send/receive IMs. (Via my SMS gateway)
So even if I do find this *.cab somewhere again, it won't work. AGAIN - is because I already found it once, and it didn't work, because of GPRS. Thank You
ok well i dont know what to tell you about gprs, thats something you have to find on your own along with the cab file, no one here is going to just hand you answers this forum is mostly for developers and those who want to learn how to cook roms and such, so there you have it and btw you posted in the wrong forum this is about rom dev not wing/herald cabs

[Think Tank] Wifi Proxy

Hello,
There are some open issues in android that states the lack of proxy support for Wifi connections.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9126
I know, and the majority of Android users might also know, that there is a way to "hack" the android browser to use proxy. It's done via sqlite.
But I think, as many other users, that this is no solution. The "hack" is only for the bowser, so exclude market, gapps, etc.
Now, someone from google said that:
Comment 8 by [email protected], Jul 07, 2010
There was a bug in how the browser used the http proxy - it was fixed for the Froyo release.
Other applications may still fail though - only the browser even attempts to use the http proxy. In the future we plan to move the proxy-awareness into http stacks, but it's unclear when that work can be done.

So, as you can see there are no plans whatsoever for implementing proxy support.
What I would like to start here, is some sort of list of kernel/modules/coding requirements, to start a possible development.
To anybody out there that has some know-how on this subject, please speak!
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Anthon.

Agreed
Just adding my support to this. It's a much needed feature!
Hi,
Can you teach me how to use the sqlite with android for browsing via proxy... I just want to browse atleast in my university!! Help me out!!
Hello again,
I was thinking the most quick way would be to have a local proxy client (where we would configure our proxy server settings) and redirect/forward all traffic with iptables rules to that local port.
Sort of a transparent proxy.
We have some netfilter modules included in the custom kernels that comes in most custom roms.
No, what proxy client could we use? Is there a busybox proxy client we could use?
Thanks.
Anthon.

Only way that I know of is to set up a transpararent proxy on a computer.
Hi
Sorry for my absence.
I've been investigating a little bit and found a great piece of software called Tor - http://www.torproject.org/docs/android.html.en.
It's a privacy and security tool for browsing the Internet. It's also a local transparent proxy!
I have tried this tool at work (we have a proxy to get out to the Internet) and I managed to get Google Email syncs and Google Talk even without configuring anything even close to a proxy!!!
So, great news! I'll do some more research, hope you all can help.
Best regards,
Anthon.
Hi again,
Yesterday I went to the tor irc channel and talked we some nice folks there
Their recommendation was to look for a solution with iptables (what I said in the beginning).
I searched a bit more and found this: http://proxychains.sourceforge.net/.
It seems to be possible to chain the entire "system" and not just an application.
Will try to build this using Android NDK. Don't know if it will work...
Any recommendations?
Best regards,
Anthon.
Thanks a lot buddy...Keep us posted about the updates...I am also trying this orbot... will post the updates!!
And sorry for asking more questions... phone needs to be rooted for using orbot??

See the "Platform specific notes": http://www.torproject.org/docs/android.html.en
Thanks...Will give it a try..and post tomorrow!!

Internet Calling (SIP) while on mobile network

So most (all?) Android phones all you to enter in SIP credentials from settings>call>Internet call settings. I have a few SIP accounts that I have entered, but it only seems to initialize when I am on wifi. Given that I regularly have 4G service I would like to be able to receive incoming calls on these accounts. Is there any way to disable to wifi requirement? I find it strange that this is still enabled given that I am running a non stock ROM!

BesT THING TO DO IS DELETE YOUR setting and download csimple or the link underneath here and with this software you can use your 4g or 3g service for internet calling.beside i had the same problem it wouldn't let me make call through hsdpa or 3.5g. so after downloading everytrhing is working perfectly.

In all stock and custom ROMs that I have tried Internet Calling is available on WIFI only.
You would therefore need a third party app such as cSipsimple, Sipdroid, Bria or Acrobits.
You also need to check if you provider allows SIP calls. I am on Vodafone UK and they allow it only to customers with 900 minutes(or more) monthly plan, others are blocked.
Shery4life: giffgaff is a virtual provider, which network do they use?

I was considering using CSimple, however it is my understanding that it must be used with a 3rd party hosted pbx (or your own pbx of course). Can it be used standalone on the phone?

Well, if the following instructions are followed you can enable it regardless of whether your carrier allows it. However, I dont feel comfortable making the changes suggested in the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354838
All the apps in my post are standalone and do not require any hosted PBX. You will need username, password and SIP server info from your SIP provider.
The link you have provided will enable the internal SIP client of Android to work over 3G/H, which is what you have asked in the openning post.
It will not enable SIP if your mobile provider blocks it

So I decided to try out Csipsimple and it seems to do the trick. However, I would prefer to use the native app if possible do to more efficient battery use (allegedly). If anyone can create a flashable zip from my original link that would be great.
The ROM that I am using has been prepared by someone who does not post it on XDA.
It's called SENSITY and it's based on the European stock ROM 1.xx.401.x.
This Chef has actually created a flashable ZIP file for this purpose. Link:
http://www.multiupload.com/OEQMIVKJYW.
He has tested it only on his own ROM, but THINKS it will work on any rom based on the above.
If you want to test it, make a NAND backup first and give it a try.

Thanks bud! Just so I am clear, is that zip supposed to enable SIP calling while on the carriers network (using my current ROM) or is it a whole new ROM with that function enabled?
It is JUST to enable Internet (SIP) Calls from your native application.
The guy just used the instructions in the link that you had provided and produced a ZIP file that would lift the WiFi only restriction.IT IS NOT A NEW ROM. You would retain your cuurent ROM. Once you have flashed it, let us know if it worked.

Thanks, I will test it out shortly and get back to you.
I flashed the ZIP file from my post above and it worked. It removed the Wifi only from the native SIP Client (Settings>Call>Use Internet Calling).
However, I did not find this application to be user friendly.
1. There is no indication whether the account has successfully registered with the SIP provider.
2. When using multiple providers, you would need to go back to settings each time you want to change the account to be used.
Third party applications do show state of account registration and let you choose the account to be used from the dialler screen.
For now, I will stick with Acrobits and CsipSimple.

Thank you for reporting back on this, I still have not had the opportunity to flash it myself. However, I did want to point out that the native Android app does support the functions you just mentioned. You can check the status of each SIP connection by going to settings>call>Internet call settings. Once there, select "use internet calling" and change it to "ask for each call". Also be sure that you have "receive incoming calls" checked if you want to do more than just place calls. In either case thanks for the link, I will try both methods and see if one has a significant advantage.
