Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone for 99 euro! - General Topics

Samsung has Windows Mobile Smartphones that some retailers are selling for as low as 99 euro, without contract, without simlock!
For example the
Samsung SGH-i200
http://uk.samsungmobile.com/mobile/SGH-I200
It is a Wm 6.1, UMTS, HSDPA, just 100grams.
or the Samsung SGH-i620
The time of budget Smartphones is here... thanks Samsung...

2.3 inch screen is ouch but not bad for 150 bucks.

Toshiba Portégé G900

Browsing for a phone to replace my Hermes, I found this!
It's the Toshiba Portégé G900, it has EDGE (no HSDPA but I can live with that)
a 416MHz processor, 128MB of RAM miniSD, windows mobile 6, A screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, WiFi, bluetooth, full QWERTY keyboard etc.
BUT I've never actually heard of Toshiba making phones
Should I stick with the Hermes? or go for the Toshiba?
i believe that htc also get their gsm part oem from another company
nothing wrong with that same way they get their lcd displays
thosiba made pda's for a long time though
but personaly i dont see why it would be a step up over the hermes apart from the higher res
and a step down to go to edge from umts
it has about the same processor, double the RAM, fingerprint/gimmick reader
it kinda appeals to me (even though i want a TRUE pocket size phone )
p.s. what is the difference between umts and edge? my service provider says theyre just as fast :/
it DOES have UMTS and HSPDA.
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-14182-Toshiba+in+Paris:+the+Portégé+G900.html
" my service provider says theyre just as fast"
typicaly service providers know as much about such things
as normal supermarket salespeople knows about the computers/hardware they sell
of cause it could be that their company have issues making umts work
GPRS == up to 115 kbps but more like 30 to 80 kbps irl.
EDGE == up to 236kbps but more like 100 to 160 kbps irl
UMTS == supports up to 2Mbps, but in real life deployments is limited to 384 kbps.
HSDPA == support up to 14 Mbps, but irl will prob be between 4 and 5 Mbps.
i like the screen of that toshiba but worry that old applications may have issues with such a res :S
The link posted by Heov (post # 4) states that the RAM is 64 MB.
Are we all sure that it is 128 MB. Is there an official Toshiba page which I believe would be more reliable source of information regarding memory specifications.

yeah, it's 64mb "internal memory" which means STORAGE (availalbe storage). toshiba's spec page is 128mb ram. ppl have confirmed this in other forums.
sound pretty good then! I'll need to hold it in my hands first though, so I'll know it feels right aswell!
I did search for a smaller phone than my hermes with a full qwerty keyboard Anyone have any info on the S730 I doubt it'll come out soon after the vox launch though......
Got it!
800x480 !
Ill get one tomorrow and post my comments asap ....
Not so happy
Got the G900 4 days ago but am not pleased with it at all
Did you even bother having a look at the BIG Tosh G900 Post in this forum? All of your concerns have already been discussed.
Uhh no ...

MWg Roadmap Shows Windows Mobile 7 Device in Q4 2008
Posted by Zach Epstein on May 10, 2008 6:16 pm 1 comment Filed in Windows Mobile, Handsets
Wow, not sure we expected this one. According to a video shot during the roadmap portion of an MWg presentation, Q4 of this year will bring with it the first crop of Windows Mobile 7 devices. This of course makes absolutely no sense given the time line between 6.1 and 7, but we suppose crazier things have happened. The presenter neglects to delve into the specs in depth, but his visual aid speaks for itself. Here’s a breakdown of the roadmap for those of you who are too lazy to click through and watch the video:
Q3 2008
MWg Rici - 12.5 mm thick, Windows Mobile 6.1, 3 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.2 Mbps HSUPA connectivity
Q4 2008
MWg Flame II - Windows Mobile 7, 3.5″ touchscreen display, advanced multimedia features, 3.2 megapixel camera and integrated GPS
MWg Iris - Touchscreen device with slider form factor and QWERTY keyboard, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.2 HSUPA connectivity and integrated GPS
MWg Graphite II - No specs available
MWG Walk PC - Connected UMPC / tablet with Vista OS and integrated 3G radio
Q1 2009
MWg Atom IV - Windows Mobile 7, 7.2 HSDPA and 5.2 HSUPA connectivity, 3.2 megapixel camera and integrated GPS
MWg Vix - Windows Mobile 7, 12.5 mm thick, "new" QWERTY slider "for better messaging experience", 3.2 megapixel camera and integrated GPS
Whether or not MWg is able to push Windows Mobile 7 out during this calendar year, it looks like the Expansys-owned manufacturer has some pretty hot devices in store for us.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/05/10/mwg-roadmap-shows-windows-mobile-7-device-in-q4-2008/
7 MWG smartphones leaked, 3 of them with Windows Mobile 7. MWG Flame II with WM7 to be released in 2008
MWG is not the best know Windows Mobile smartphone maker around the world. But having Expansys - one of the biggest mobile phone distributors - as a parent, helps.
During last few months MWG caused a lot of buzz with their Zinc and Atom smartphones. And it has much more exciting things up it’s sleeve towards the end of this year.
MWG presented their whole 2008 smartphone roadmap to select audience recently, and it did not take long for the presentation to leak onto the net. And there were quite a few interesting tidbits in it.
According to the roadmap, MWG plans to launch 6 new Windows Mobile smartphones, 1 UMPC/MID. 3 of them will get Windows Mobile 7 OS, and one of WM7 devices is scheduled for the end of this year!
The picture above is pretty self explanatory. Still, I’ll recap the timing and specs of the planned devices.
Q3 2008 has only one handset scheduled, and that’s a slim 12.5 mm MWG Rici WM 6.1 smartphone with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.2 Mbps HSUPA connectivity, 3 megapixel camera and GPS.
Q4 2008 gets much more interesting with 4 pretty impressive devices scheduled. And the first of them - MWG Flame II is supposed to to run on Windows mobile 7! Other MWG Flame 2 specs include big 3.5″ or higher (touchscreen, I’m sure) display, advanced multimedia features, 3.2 megapixel camera and GPS.
MWG Iris is a slim touchscreen slider with QWERTY keyboard, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.2 HSUPA connectivity and GPS. There’s another non- touchscreen phone model called Graphite II, but no specs for it are defined yet.
And MWG also plans to have an ultraportable PC, called MWG Walk PC for the end of 2008, with Vista OS and built-in 3G. My guess is, it will be one of MID/UMPC devices along the lines of HTC Shift UMPC.
In the begriming of 2009 we’ll se 2 more Windows Mobile 7 equipped smartphones from MWG. Slim, multimedia centric MWG Atom IV, with 7.2 HSDPA and 5.2 HSUPA connectivity, 3.2 mpx camera and GPS. And 12.5 mm slim, messaging oriented QWERTY slider MWG Vix with some kind of novel keyboard, 3.2 mpx camera and GPS.

Zzzzzzzzzzz!!!!
Thanks for the update. I'm still waiting on 6.1!
And you really think Microsoft will get a new OS out in time? *Laughs hysterically*
Would be nice if mobile providers actually provided OS upgrades instead of being greedy gits who only port the new OSs to new devices.
Don't hold your breath. I could bet you my house that we won't see it this year. Microsoft's estimated dates are always way too optimistic. And so are phone manufacturer's announcements.
Have in mind that vendors usually don't want to release any information on dates or features, for fear that will help the competition. So whenever they release something, it's carefully crafted by marketing and intended to have an effect (to keep people talking, to drive their stock up, whatever). That also applies to information "leaks", most of which are actually planned.
Bottom lines: as Dr. House would say, manufacturers always lie. Don't listen to them. Don't speculate. Just wait, and see
Usually that is true and I would say the same, however iPhone is putting the pressure on the Mobile community a little.
The advantage that Apple has over MS is that the Software Manufacturer is also the Hardware Manufacturer. Just think, how many different mobile devices does Apple have to program for? 1? Whereas Windows has to work on 100s of different Hardware platforms.
The same thing with Blackberry, they have 5 models and that's it, pretty easy. I bet you that if MS would manufacture let's say 1 or 2 models, our ROM size would be half and the speed of the OS would double just by eliminating crap that most of us don't need.
I might be wrong, but that's my $0.02.

I have a hunch this is more likley to happen then not. Like the poster above said, there is pressure on MS now. I am aware of some people who already have some builds, which could possibly mean the release could be coming sooner than we thought....

Galaxy Note 8 coming for Rs 16,200?

The bigger Note is to be unveiled during Mobile World congress 2013.
Believe it or not, Samsung's 8 inch screen bearing Galaxy Note 8 is all set to be launched for a mere Rs 16,200.
Well, the Digitimes has reported that the Android tablet will be launched around $249 to $299 price bracket which in Indian rupees turns out to be Rs 13,403-Rs 16,200. Of course, there will be a host of taxes and duties that may push the price of Galaxy Note 8 to about Rs 25,000 or even more, putting it directly in competition with the Apple iPad Mini which is currently selling in India for Rs 22,000.
Earlier, Samsung's mobile division head, JK Shin confirmed that the company will launch the 8 inch display bearing Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at the Mobile World Congress 2013. Read full article here:
