Hi,
I'm looking for an alternative keyboard with a similar layout to that of the default windows keyboard.
To be specific:
- Standard QWERTY keyboard with keys arranged like a normal keyboard (not aligned vertically; ie must be zig-zag)
- Vertical height should similar to the default keyboard
- *Must* have numbers and punctuations visible on the default layout (ie, I shouldn't have to change to a different layout just for pressing a friggin "." like I have to do in PCM)
- Should have Ctrl, Shift/Caps keys on the default layout
- Should support gestures (like for backspace, space, caps etc)
Of course, all the above are the features of the standard keyboard. But the reason why I'm looking for an alternative keyboard is due to the lack of:
- Skins
- Word/Phrase Prediction
--
In case no such keyboard exists, I'm willing to settle for a T9 keyboard which works exactly like that of a mobile, where it's easy to switch between numbers/alpha/custom words at the press of a button. So for eg, if I want to enter "dexter", I should be able to press the keys in the sequence "def", "def" (twice), "wxyz" (twice), "tuv" , "def" (twice), "pqrs" (thrice). The word should then be automatically added to the dictionary (or prompted to). (All the T9 keyboards I've tried, like TouchPal, are inconvenient to use for typing non-dictionary words ). Oh, and once again, the vertical height of the keyboard should be as small as possible.
My OS is WM6 on a 201Mhz/48MiB PPCPE.
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
[deXter]
if you use a different layout to the default pcm keyboard then you can see the full stop aswell as the qwerty and as for having numbers and qwerty at the same time with them being a good size is a bit mental. id recomend getting pcm and getting the theme skin called 2many iclone. the is a layout called 2many., this makes the comma and period visible. and its skinnable. and fyi if you hold down on the 123 button itll pop up with the numbers for you
try the htc keyboards (such as the opal ones)

Are there any tools that can customize the Software Input list so that it's not such a mess choosing what input I want to use?
I love having all the options the Fuze gives for inputs, but I personally like using about three different types of input depending on the situation the rest are mostly in the way 99% of the time. I mostly use Block recognizer, Japanese input, and Full QWERTY, in that order. The problem is that two are in a sub menu, and if I go into landscape mode the issue is compounded by not enough room and up and down arrows.
As it stands my list of inputs are:
Touch input settings
English *w/ sub menu
Phone Keypad
Compact QWERTY
Full QWERTY
Block Recognizer
Other *a sub menu leading to:
Options
Block Recognizer *again*
Japanese Input (added by .cab)
Keyboard
Letter Recognizer
Transcriber
I'm not sure if it's a "smart" menu because I don't remember Block Recognizer being on the front page at first.
It would be great if there was a program to re-order this, or a reg edit we could make to rearrange things.
For one, why is the language option at the top of the list, do the majority of users need to change back and forth between languages that much? I don't even really know what it does, different spell check I assume?
Options and settings are great but they can be in the back, one they're set right I don't change them anymore.
And for marketing purposes I can see why the legacy inputs are shuffled to the back in favor of the latest and greatest, but for those of us old school users who started out on Handspring Visors and Palm III's we want out familiar inputs without having to hop through hoops.
And the Japanese input isn't something that can be duplicated in other ways, you can't lookup unknown Kanji with a keyboard. Meanwhile the front screen has 3 of it's 4 input methods taken up by keyboard inputs that are really just variations on the same thing, on a phone that has a real slideout keyboard to boot.
I'd really like a way to fix this so that the most diverse inputs that go beyong the physical keyboard are on top, in front. And the multiple redundancies for the real keyboard are in the submenu or on the bottom.
It takes just a few reg edits to customize the SIP list.
[HKCR\CLSID\...]
(HTC SIPs)
{198D503A-...} = Phone Keypad
{36BC8FF6-...} = Full QWERTY
{62B00599-...} = Compact QWERTY
(MS Default SIPs)
{42429667-...} = Keyboard
{42429690-...} = Letter Recognizer
{42429691-...} = Block Recognizer
{F0034DD0-...} = Transcriber
(Japanese IME SIPs)
{0CBEA010-...} = Tegaki
{1D07E4B2-...} = Kana
{BB6E8371-...} = Kensaku
{BDE4F120-...} = Romaji
Under each, you will find a key IsSIPInputMethod with string (Default) = 1. Change any of them to 0 to disable the SIP.
However there are some annoying caveats. Stock and most cooked ROMs use HTC's eT9 IME by default which gives you the fancy Diamond-themed pull-up list (to match TF3d). The eT9 IME reserves 2 spots in the list for HTC SIPs (as noted above), so if you disable all three HTC SIPs you will get 2 blank/black rows in the menu. I don't think there's a way to customize the exact order of the SIPs either, they simply appear based on which ones you previously selected. And I also don't think you can remove the Language selection sub-menu. You can change which options are available (ie: remove English, French, German, Italian, and/or Spanish), but you can't remove the submenu entirely.
There is one cooked ROM (can't recall which) that has the eT9 IME and all HTC SIPs removed completely, leaving you with the standard MS IME list (just a simple popup list, no fancy TF3d-themed list), but it also removes almost all extra HTC software leaving you with a barebones ROM.
Fortunately, PQzII makes life a little bit easier by letting you choose separate default SIPs for portrait and landscape modes (which also overrides the default SIP after a soft-reset). You will still probably need to dive through the list once in a while, but at least PQzII coupled with removing any SIPs you don't use will clean up the list and make it a little easier to find and switch between SIPs.
hi
since I have WWE ROM with European languages that I don't need, I would like to remove the keyboard layout for Czech, German exc'
do you know which registry values I have to change in order to achieve that?
I just did that a week ago. Use the "Input Methods" feature in SKTools to remove what you don't want to use. When removing the SIPs be sure to specify one of the remain SIPs as default. Also, be sure to select "remove from registary" also. This will make sure that it does not show up again.
The registary edit that is listed above does the same thing SKTools does. Also, as listed above, if you delete one of the HTC SIPs, like Compact QWERTY or Full QWERTY, you will end up with a blank spot in the selection screen. I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of that...
Hi!
I have an issue with the word selector list when using the Full QWERTY layout in XT9 mode. If I use the phone keypad or the Compact QWERTY layout words with special characters like æ, ø or å are suggested automatically.
For example hitting the "mno" key and then the "jkl" key on the Phone Keypad will suggest the word "øl" (among others), which by the way means beer in Norwegian. With the Compact QWERTY keyboard the special Norwegian characters are included included in the layout (on the buttons "opå" and "møæ"). Using thous keys works also perfectly well.
But on the Full QWERTY keyboard words with special characters are not suggested, unless I tap and hold for example the "o" key and manually slide to the letter "ø".
So to type "øl" I need to tap and hold "o", slide to "ø" and then tap the "l" button. Is there anyway I can get the Full QWERTY keyboard to behave like the two others, and suggest words with the special characters "ø" when only hitting the "o" key?

Dear All,
While texting..
Long pressing the keys of the virtual keyboard
and sliding them to choose a letter
while looking at the huge letter pop-up
that displays the currently touched letter above a user's finger
has proven the easiest way for me to type text messages.
(a user's finger always hides the letter that is touched)
I'm looking for a keyboard app
that has the option to disable alternative characters
when long pressing a virtual keyboard's key
so that long pressing a key like "a"
will not pop up a bar of "a"s
with weird accents on top:
"à á â ã ä å æ"
(Android 2.2 default virtual keyboard)
That will make typing with the virtual keyboard so much easier
without worrying that touching a virtual key too long
will pop up the bar with the weird: "à á â ã ä å æ"
And besides, who is using those characters in English anyway?
That bar is just plain useless for English.
So.. anyone knows any keyboard app
that has the option to disable
the alternative characters bar?
Thanks in advance for any info,
ff
You could try Go Keyboard.
You can't disable it completly, but it is possible to alter the delay of the long press (max. 1 sec).
It's very customizable, and got loads of themes. You should try it.
Go Keyboard is amazing!
Thanks!
The delay does the job nicely!
(If only they could make the delay up to 2 seconds
that would be even more amazing :^) but that's OK.. )

Review of Dextr
Review of Dextr
Dextr is indeed very easy.
The fact that the layout is in alphabetical order
helps you in typing really really fast.
The circular keys make it very natural to tap them
so that's another clever feature of Dextr
although i would prefer to have the option of making them bigger.
As i prefer writing messages in all capital letters
because it's easier for me to write them
and for people to read them..
finding how to [Cap Lock] the keys was
a matter of luck for me as i've found it accidentally.
You have to double tap fast, the key with the big capital [A].
That being said i will have to go back in using [Go Keyboard]
as Dextr has a few shortcomings that make it difficult for me
to write messages. But i'll have to stress that it's a matter
of personal taste.. Other Android users will not care and
make Dextr their default keyboard.
1-PopUp Letter height
When taping a key, a big Letter Pops Up showing what you are taping.
Because the PopUp is too close to your thumb
you thumb hides the PopUp letter rendering it useless.
In [Go Keyboard] you can adjust the PopUp height of a key to higher
so you can easily view the PopUp without it being hidden by your thumb.
In Dextr you cannot do that afaik.
2-The [Enter] key does not function.
Probably because Dextr is still in Beta.
Dextr has a column of orange keys that when long pressed
special characters popup.
I wish that Dextr will offer the option to disable
those special characters some day
as i find them completely useless and frustrating in that
when you long press the orange keys and the useless
special characters popup, you have to hit the back button
and tap the same letter again.
Dextr has the option to delay the popup of special characters
but the delay is too short. The same with [Go Keyboard] btw.

Flit Keyboard ! !
Cell phones because of their small size they have 2 grand limitations
when it comes to entering text with their virtual on screen keyboards:
1-qwerty characters on virtual buttons are way too small to view easily
so most likely in most cases you are wasting your time and your patience
looking around to find what you want to tap.
2-qwerty character virtual buttons are way too small to tap
so most likely in most cases you tap the wrong buttons.
But my quest for the
easiest Android keyboard app for text messaging..
(specially if your phone's screen is small)
..is finally over ! !
Flit Keyboard makes entering text so much easier ! !
Search for: [Flit Keyboard] in Google Play.
Just Eight ( 8 ) >> HUGE << Buttons Keyboard.
A gift from God for guys with BIG fingers!!
So easy to enter text with just 1 thumb.
Also, by easily sliding you can type:
>> All << Alphabet characters, numbers and symbols,
(though some symbols still need shift)
all in the same screen!
All you have to do is:
Tap one of the 8 buttons and slide to specific character.
When you release the button that specific character is typed.
Just tap slide and release! That's all there is to it.. so easy!
It's so easy that in fact with a little bit of practice you may enter text
without looking at your cell phone!
While you are pressing a button a BIG pop up opens up
with 9 characters to slide to, making it easier to see
more characters than an Android qwerty keyboard can display.
Important: No more unwanted weird characters typed
if you long-press a button too much..
No more accidentally typing the wrong character!
You can see the character you want to type
by long-pressing as much as you like
to make sure it's the correct character you want to type
before releasing the button and the character is typed.
Cursor controls!
By sliding the space bar (left, up, right) and one of the buttons (down)
you can easily move the cursor any where you want in a body text!
All other keyboard apps that have cursor controls they take
a chunk of the screen making you wanting to disable their cursor functionality
to save screen space.
I firmly believe that Flit Keyboard must become
THE Number One Android Keyboard
out of any other qwerty Android keyboards out there.

Search youtube for:
[Flit Keyboard]
P.S.
To make characters bigger than the default Flit Keyboard
go to Flit settings and disable: [Show hint line]

Try Swiftkey 3. I been using it for over a year now.
Its clean, easy and efficient.
- Option to activate/ deactivate foreign characters.
- Option to change Long press time from 100-1600ms
- Option to increase or decrease key height. Love this option. I have fat thumbs.
I have the paid version but you can try the free one and see how it works for you.
---------------------------------------------------
- MyTouch 4G using PARANOIDANDROID jellybean
This (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964814) is almost the perfect keyboard (for me)... but it's missing the long press/alternate keys (like the number row, comma, dash, etc). Does anyone know of another version of this keyboard that has long press buttons?
Swiftkey
you can download swift keyboard from playstore
I was looking for a replacement keyboard for the xperia keyboard (port doesn't work anymore on my android 6 rom on my oneplus phone) to get an AZERTY layout with number row on top ( works also with Qwerty ).
After searching 2 days i did find an new app in the playstore which is still in beta , but working very well. :good:
Mostly you have to select the PC-layout to get number row , and if not the number row is only working for QWERTY layout.
Nextapp keyboard on Playstore
ENJOY ! :victory:
--------------------
The NextApp Keyboard is a derivative of the AOSP keyboard found in Android 4.4 KitKat, with added arrow keys and other special keys, and a slightly tweaked QWERTY layout that is closer to that of a PC Keyboard.
This is a BETA RELEASE of this app. If you experience issues with it, please report them to [email protected]. It's extremely difficult to have a conversation using the Play Store review system.
This version comes with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish dictionaries.
I would greatly appreciate feedback on the keyboard layouts, including the arrangement of special keys on the alphabet keyboard, symbols keyboard, and function keyboards.
Function Keyboard
This keyboard includes a function key ("Fn") toward its lower left corner which can be used to access many additional keys typically found on a PC or Mac keyboard, including:
• Cursor Arrow Keys
• Page Up / Page Down
• Insert, Delete, Home, and End.
• Function F1-F12.
• Ctrl and Alt
• Tab
• Escape
The fundamental QWERTY keyboard layout has been very slightly tweaked to more closely replicate that of a PC keyboard. Specifically, the size of the left shift key has been reduced such that the third row (ZXCVBNM) is no longer overly shifted to the right. The shift key is now a standard sized key. This modification only applies to phones (the AOSP keyboard already uses this layout for tablets).
Permissions
This keyboard is based on the AOSP keyboard from Android KitKat 4.4. It uses identical permissions to that keyboard. The "read contacts" permission is used to autocomplete names from your contacts. This keyboard DOES NOT send any data to anyone.
Optional Features
This app will have also have a paid version when it exits beta. BY DEFAULT, ALL PAID FEATURES ARE TURNED OFF IN THE BETA. Paid features cannot be used unless you check the "Test Features from Paid Version" in the settings. If you enable paid features, they will only work until the end of the beta.
Thank you for helping beta test this keyboard!
