[Q] Easy keyboard app for text messaging? - General Questions and Answers

Dear All,
While texting..
Long pressing the keys of the virtual keyboard
and sliding them to choose a letter
while looking at the huge letter pop-up
that displays the currently touched letter above a user's finger
has proven the easiest way for me to type text messages.
(a user's finger always hides the letter that is touched)
I'm looking for a keyboard app
that has the option to disable alternative characters
when long pressing a virtual keyboard's key
so that long pressing a key like "a"
will not pop up a bar of "a"s
with weird accents on top:
"à á â ã ä å æ"
(Android 2.2 default virtual keyboard)
That will make typing with the virtual keyboard so much easier
without worrying that touching a virtual key too long
will pop up the bar with the weird: "à á â ã ä å æ"
And besides, who is using those characters in English anyway?
That bar is just plain useless for English.
So.. anyone knows any keyboard app
that has the option to disable
the alternative characters bar?
Thanks in advance for any info,
ff

You could try Go Keyboard.
You can't disable it completly, but it is possible to alter the delay of the long press (max. 1 sec).
It's very customizable, and got loads of themes. You should try it.

Go Keyboard is amazing!
Thanks!
The delay does the job nicely!
(If only they could make the delay up to 2 seconds
that would be even more amazing :^) but that's OK.. )

Review of Dextr
Review of Dextr
Dextr is indeed very easy.
The fact that the layout is in alphabetical order
helps you in typing really really fast.
The circular keys make it very natural to tap them
so that's another clever feature of Dextr
although i would prefer to have the option of making them bigger.
As i prefer writing messages in all capital letters
because it's easier for me to write them
and for people to read them..
finding how to [Cap Lock] the keys was
a matter of luck for me as i've found it accidentally.
You have to double tap fast, the key with the big capital [A].
That being said i will have to go back in using [Go Keyboard]
as Dextr has a few shortcomings that make it difficult for me
to write messages. But i'll have to stress that it's a matter
of personal taste.. Other Android users will not care and
make Dextr their default keyboard.
1-PopUp Letter height
When taping a key, a big Letter Pops Up showing what you are taping.
Because the PopUp is too close to your thumb
you thumb hides the PopUp letter rendering it useless.
In [Go Keyboard] you can adjust the PopUp height of a key to higher
so you can easily view the PopUp without it being hidden by your thumb.
In Dextr you cannot do that afaik.
2-The [Enter] key does not function.
Probably because Dextr is still in Beta.
Dextr has a column of orange keys that when long pressed
special characters popup.
I wish that Dextr will offer the option to disable
those special characters some day
as i find them completely useless and frustrating in that
when you long press the orange keys and the useless
special characters popup, you have to hit the back button
and tap the same letter again.
Dextr has the option to delay the popup of special characters
but the delay is too short. The same with [Go Keyboard] btw.

Flit Keyboard ! !
Cell phones because of their small size they have 2 grand limitations
when it comes to entering text with their virtual on screen keyboards:
1-qwerty characters on virtual buttons are way too small to view easily
so most likely in most cases you are wasting your time and your patience
looking around to find what you want to tap.
2-qwerty character virtual buttons are way too small to tap
so most likely in most cases you tap the wrong buttons.
But my quest for the
easiest Android keyboard app for text messaging..
(specially if your phone's screen is small)
..is finally over ! !
Flit Keyboard makes entering text so much easier ! !
Search for: [Flit Keyboard] in Google Play.
Just Eight ( 8 ) >> HUGE << Buttons Keyboard.
A gift from God for guys with BIG fingers!!
So easy to enter text with just 1 thumb.
Also, by easily sliding you can type:
>> All << Alphabet characters, numbers and symbols,
(though some symbols still need shift)
all in the same screen!
All you have to do is:
Tap one of the 8 buttons and slide to specific character.
When you release the button that specific character is typed.
Just tap slide and release! That's all there is to it.. so easy!
It's so easy that in fact with a little bit of practice you may enter text
without looking at your cell phone!
While you are pressing a button a BIG pop up opens up
with 9 characters to slide to, making it easier to see
more characters than an Android qwerty keyboard can display.
Important: No more unwanted weird characters typed
if you long-press a button too much..
No more accidentally typing the wrong character!
You can see the character you want to type
by long-pressing as much as you like
to make sure it's the correct character you want to type
before releasing the button and the character is typed.
Cursor controls!
By sliding the space bar (left, up, right) and one of the buttons (down)
you can easily move the cursor any where you want in a body text!
All other keyboard apps that have cursor controls they take
a chunk of the screen making you wanting to disable their cursor functionality
to save screen space.
I firmly believe that Flit Keyboard must become
THE Number One Android Keyboard
out of any other qwerty Android keyboards out there.
video review:
Search youtube for:
[Flit Keyboard]
P.S.
To make characters bigger than the default Flit Keyboard
go to Flit settings and disable: [Show hint line]

Try Swiftkey 3. I been using it for over a year now.
Its clean, easy and efficient.
- Option to activate/ deactivate foreign characters.
- Option to change Long press time from 100-1600ms
- Option to increase or decrease key height. Love this option. I have fat thumbs.
I have the paid version but you can try the free one and see how it works for you.

Touch Input word suggestions

Hi!
I have an issue with the word selector list when using the Full QWERTY layout in XT9 mode. If I use the phone keypad or the Compact QWERTY layout words with special characters like æ, ø or å are suggested automatically.
For example hitting the "mno" key and then the "jkl" key on the Phone Keypad will suggest the word "øl" (among others), which by the way means beer in Norwegian. With the Compact QWERTY keyboard the special Norwegian characters are included included in the layout (on the buttons "opå" and "møæ"). Using thous keys works also perfectly well.
But on the Full QWERTY keyboard words with special characters are not suggested, unless I tap and hold for example the "o" key and manually slide to the letter "ø".
So to type "øl" I need to tap and hold "o", slide to "ø" and then tap the "l" button. Is there anyway I can get the Full QWERTY keyboard to behave like the two others, and suggest words with the special characters "ø" when only hitting the "o" key?
Regards,
PK

Actually a good T9 for android especially the evo!!

It's not perfect but it would be if it could keep up completely.
HTC_IME Mod keyboard is very cool and is easily the best t9 keyboard out there.
Also the only keyboard I can decently use one handed and I have been able to use it nicely without looking for the most part.
Current version is 27 and you can get it here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
(sorry can't post links yet... )
I've tried:
Handcent T9 Free
numberpad aka (evenbetter)numberpad $3.99
and a couple other miscellaneous ones paid and free
also tried Swype beta
Some issues I have with it:
There is no next button to choose the next word in order
I haven't figured out how to change the word order yet ie when typing of I get me by default and I personally prefer of.
it could be faster... I force my self to wait for the short vibrate feedback before i press the next letter. Still very quick though, and if you use one hand it is faster because you don't try to hit two buttons at once.
Some settings I have set mine for:
Swipe left deletes last word
Swipe right switches keyboard between t9 and qwerty (you could use compact keyboard as well but I'm not into that sissy stuff)
swipe down hides keyboard
swipe up moves the cursor back a word
Volume up/down moves cursor forward/backward
Many other options as well!

largest keyboard app

Which of these keyboards have the biggest keys when using the phone in portrait mode; the android keyboard, the ime mod keyboard or better keyboard? I am looking for one that makes it less likely for those of us with fat fingers to fat finger what we are typing.
Um, i'd have to say Smart Keyboard Pro with the HTC Skin has the biggests keys. And it's not as big of a file as the HTC IME mod so there isn't that much lag when using it
come keyboards i have used
There is a keyboard called thick buttons which resizes the keys as you type making the keys that are most likely the next letter in the word larger and the rest smaller, you can also set the resize rate (small, medium, large)
SwiftKey is a pretty cool keyboard that scans your chat history to try to predict what word you will type next. They keys are pretty much the same size as the htc keyboard though. feature updates to the app will be able to scan sms, twitter, email and then create different recommendations based on the app you are typing in i.e. sms, email, or twitter.
Right now my fav keyboard app is touchpal. Don't be afraid that a lot of the text about the app is in chinese in particular parts of the tutorial they board can be set to english and all your txt recommendations will be in english. This keyboard has three layouts (my fav is the compact keyboard which gives you two letters per key but with txt prediction enabled typing is not a problem. they keys in this layout are pretty big to making it hard to miss the one you want) What is really cool about this keyboard is the ability to swipe either side ways to change keyboard layouts or down to access the secondary key (e.g. swiping down on say e will give you a 3) or in full quwerty keyboard swiping up gives you the capital letter of the letter.
Another keyboard you might want to put on your radar is blindtype. It is not out yet but it looks really awesome. It functions similar to swype but instead of swiping your finger across the keys you type normally. Look it up and you can see videos of it being demoed. It is not aval right now though but it looks like the keyboard to have for us with big fingers lol
blindtype DOES look amazing!
cant wait for it.
umm, it does not show up in my market. wth
you might want to check out ultra keyboard it allows you to re-size the keyboard making it bigger or smaller and it also has incorporated swype style typing and it also allows you to use better keyboard themes it's a paid app but in my opinion well worth it
been using big buttons keyboard for months. since i only type one handed in portrait this works perfect. it's laid out different but within a minute of typing im a pro.

[Q] Best Landscape Keyboard

I remember seeing a few months/weeks back about an updated version of SwiftKey that was designed specifically for use in landscape mode for the galaxy tab. In all the current keyboards that I have tried, the keys are extremely short which makes it difficult to type with all my fingers (yes, I am trying to learn).
My question is if anyone knows of a really good keyboard that I can download that has taller keys to make it easier to type in landscape.
Thanks,
caveman999
I use Thumb Keyboard. In the preferences you can adjust the height of the keys (you can have different settings for portrait if you so wish). Personally I find the default setting to be the best compromise between key height and screen view: much higher and the keyboard covers too much of the screen for my taste
Thumb Keyboard and Notion Ink's keyboard have been the least painful for me to use.
Thumb keyboard is really great in that you barely have to move your hands to get access to the entire alphabet, unlike most keyboards which just scale up and require you to move your hands quite a bit to type a full sentence.
The Notion Ink keyboard is also great in that it feels like a full keyboard on the 7'' screen. Ctrl, Fn, Arrow keys, and it looks great to boot (Thumb keyboard is a bit of an eye sore)
Smart Keyboard is height adjustable independantly of each mode (portrait/landscape).
It'd be quite nice if you could stop the input box taking up the entire top half of the screen in any keyboard though as it makes them a lot less useful to use with IM apps.

Thanks, I have started using both of the keyboards and so far I really like thumb Keyboard, but you are right, it is kind of ugly.

When you turn off "long press for numbers and symbols" you get little popup keyboards above the letters from which you can choose accented letters: the æ and å are accessible by long pressing the a, the ø by long pressing the o.
A scandinavian keyboard with those letters right on the main keyboard (not as popup key entries) will be released soon.

[REQ] Android Keyboard with improvements

I really like the jelly bean keyboard. I just miss one feature: after writing a word, for example a name, it is not possible to make the first letter uppercase by pressing the shift button. So you have to erase the word or try to get the cursor to the exact position. Both takes plenty of time especially in non english languages.
Is there any keyboard app which has this feature?

Generally speaking I think that you have to press the shift button before you press the first letter of the name, not afterwords (I'm pretty sure you already know that, but since I don't have jb I don't know how it works there). Apart from that in my humble opinion Smartkeyboard pro is the best keyboard replacement app. It's not free (link to trial version) but it gets the names uppercase and has tons of languages. If you don't want to pay you can try swype you can either type as usual or swype over the letters and you can make a letter uppercase by simply swyping over the shift button - and it offers several languages.
I would recommend SwiftKey. You don't need to do much besides just type letters... You don't even have to hit space. It'll auto add spaces, capitals, punctuation, as well as the BEST (not opinion, this is fact) predictions on any android keyboard.
