Using GPS with NoData Running - Touch Pro, Fuze General

hello everyone.
Since I don't have a data plan with AT&T, I use the program NoData which stops the transfer of any data from AT&T MediaNet or AT&T GPRS.
If I have those running, would I not be able to use my GPS? I have Google Maps installed and I'm looking to buy a TomTom software. If I have either of those, can I still use GPS without having to turn on Data?
Also, is it possible to download the directions and maps from Google Maps Mobile so that the phone just uses the GPS and updates the directions without the need to have an active data transfer?
Thanks

Google maps has to have data at all times. Tomtom has all the maps and POI on a storage card so it doesn't need data at all.

You can't use Google Maps without having data on (either AT&T data or WiFi) because it downloads the maps on the fly.
With TomTom, GPS should work just fine without any data because the maps are stored on your storage card.
I also use the NoData program and have no problems with Garmin Mobile XT (which works like TomTom).

all right. So even with NoData running, the GPS signal and network should work fine, right? And this if I use the GPS, I won't get charged extra from AT&T, will I?

You can't even use Google Maps on a Wifi-only connection?? Well that sucks.

Yes it will work, no you won't get charged.

You can put the phone in "Airplane mode" and turn the cellular radio off completely, and it will still work.
AT&T doesn't charge you for using the GPS. They charge you for using their Telenav program and maps. Completely different.

You can use google maps just fine with wifi...it just needs some sort of data access so any internet connection will do.

Works for me, too. I turned Wifi on, turned GPS on, turned cellular radio off... worked just fine.

GPS N3wb question...

Ok, maybe you guys can help here. I have quite a bit of experience with Windows Mobile phones (had an 8525, upgraded to a custom ROM, unlocked SIM/CID, etc), so that's what level of experience you're working with.
Now, I just picked up the Fuze, very cool phone! However, I'm wondering the following about GPS:
1. Is it available in this phone (i.e. AT&T didn't disable it).
2. I want to do GPS. I don't have a data plan. I DO have wi-fi. I DON'T want to be charged money. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance! The questions were probably asked elsewhere, but I looked around a bit and everything else looked way above these questions, which hopefully are pretty simple to answer...
i have the same question...
I know the Fuze has GPS, and i followed the steps on THIS link, but it doesnt seem to work, the GPS Test, never seems to finish looking for satelites, and when i go to Google Maps, it keeps "seeking GPS satelites"
GPS is available on the Fuze and it's independent of any data plan. All you need is some program that can access the GPS.
However, getting the GPS to work seems to be flakey at best. I tested mine briefly but wasn't able to get a signal lock. Need to do some more testing.
The GPS on my Fuze works great. First you should run Quick GPS and it will use the wifi to download the current GPS satellite locations. Then you should use google maps, you have to goto google maps menu and say 'use gps' then just go stand outside somewhere where theres no much tree coverage and wait for awhile (for the first time, now that I've done it once the GPS starts working in 10 seconds or so) Then you will start to pick up the gps satellites. I'm not sure how great it will be without a data plan... it uses the data plan to download the map info. Hopefully your wifi works out side.

What about using something like Garmin or TomTom's software? Would that work without a data plan, and without the need for wi-fi?
I use Garmin without a data plan and it works great. I installed it first thing after I got my GPS and didn't do anything to get it to work. The GPS on my FUZE worked out of the box like it should.

GPS Questions for Fuze

I am curious if it is possible to use the built in GPS without a data plan.
I know that the QuickGPS (which keeps reminding me to download new data) makes use of the cell towers for downloading, but I was curious if I could, say, use Google Maps or TomTom or something.
IE, download the map software through the WiFi connection, and then just use the GPS (bypassing the cell towers).

to expand on this, google doesn't have hte maps downloaded to your phone. the other two actually store the maps on the phone (memory card) so it doesn't need to use data to download the maps. the actual gps chip does not use data as it communicates with gps satellites to triangulate your position. The only problem with these programs is that htey cost money, so if you're willing to drop some cash, then you have your solution.

Is there a way of using GPS without media net?

My friend has the LG incite and run windows mobile. He has no media net, but is able to use gps just by using gpsgate and then the tom tom program. i was wondering if there is a way for us on the FUZE to do the same?
SEARCH SEARCH SEARCHH!! <<--- IDK why people don't use the search when we have it!!
all you have to do is turn off the AGPS in your settings. (Go to Start > Settings > System > AGPS Settings) and make sure Enable AGPS is NOT checked. You now have GPS without using your MediaNet!
Definitely did not work for me... Are there any other settings that I need? I turned off AGPS and went to my google maps and tom tom and can't get it to work.
.....google maps REQUIRES the internet to work, whether it's WiFi or MediaNet some sort fo internet is needed.
...as per TomTom it should work. I used to do it all the time until i actually got the data plan for myself.
See i don't want to get the data plan because its just for something I will use once in a blue moon. I just wanna have GPS in case I need it some time
okay...so TomTom or any other navigation software will work as long as you have the maps on your storage card...
I gotta wait till I get my phone back, but can anyone tell me if this works? (People without media Net of course) From my understanding it'll keep saying that its looking for a connection and can't get one.
not sure what "media net" is assuming it's some sort of isp
but gps don't require gprs or even a phone part to work
mind you most these gps's dont work indoors you have to be outside
or in a car and have a working tomtom set correctly up or gamin or any
other gps software suite
Media Net is ATT data plan they call it media net. Everytime I try connecting GPS it seems like its trying to use a data plan and since I shut it off by calling up ATT it seems like my phone is only trying to go through ATT and saying no connection
tomtom and gamin gps software should not use a data connection at all
if of cause the install include the cards of where one is located
the same software is run on pda's with gps but no phone
like many of the mio pda's
if your using some PirateBay copy of Tomtom or Garmin then you need to check the tags. Raphael is not a smartphone it's a PPC.
Advanced config take off aGPS.
MoDaCo nodata.cab
otherwise get garmin i've had very few problems once i figured out how to copy my maps from my c550 to my phone.
whats the point of having a phone as powerful as the touch pro if you aren't gonna pay for a data plan? thats like a car with no gas

albeit i do have a data plan, i debated it for a while when i realized i was spending 80-90 hours a week in the hospital which has wifi and so does the fuze....given the limited time out of wifi spots, i almost went without it.... but then chose to go with it for those times when i'm not in wifi spots...
Try Amaze Gps....turn by turn gps...and it doesnt use data....and best of all its free!!
amAze needs the user to have a data plan in order for it to operate. similar to google maps

Touch XV6900 GPS without cell service

Will a HTC Touch Verizon XV6900 be able to run TomTom/Garmin/IGo/ETC.. GPS without any cell service.
This says I need an active data connection for aGPS to work. Does that mean I cannot use any GPS software on this phone without buying a plan?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=VerizonAGPSFix
I understand I will need to flash a new ROM to unlock the GPS which I was going to do anyway to get WM6.5.
But I am buying a used phone or that will not be connected to any network but I hope to play with it and use the wifi portion to surf internet when I am on some trips.
If anyone has any other ideas on something I could use I would appreciate it.
Yes, AGPS requires a data connection to "fill in" GPS data using cell tower triangulation when you lose GPS connection. You don't have to use it though, it can be turned off to get back to just plain GPS.
I am currently using a Raphael without a data plan with TomTom and its working great.
ok thanks. So agps is just an extra benefit. It will still work as a standalone gps without a data plan
Yep, that's what I'm doing right now.

[Q] Is data plan required to use GPS on samsung captivate

Guys,
I jus bought Samsung Captivate. I am new to this.
Is data plan required to use Google maps/Google navigation/GPS on samsung captivate?
If yes, then what is meant by integrated GPS. On wirefly site it says pre-loaded google maps. Should not it behave like normal GPS then?
My GPS does not work unless 3G data or wi-fi (in short internet is on) enabled. I get the lock pretty fast if 3G data or wi-fi enabled. If I turn them off I keep getting message data connection lost.
I block my 3G data using APNDroid or JuiceDefender.
TIA.
ahh technically/theoretically? If you can get a maps program that has an offline cache of files, then no data wouldn't be required. I recall spotting some google map cachers and I think there was an extra android app or two you could use that utilize some sort of downloaded maps. MapDroyd looks like a familair name but I can't speak for any of them since I just stream with google and never tried anything offline anyhow.

The program "Google Maps" is preloaded, but Google Maps requires a data connection. The GPS chip itself is integrated and you can get your Latitude and Longitude without needing a data connection.
So, yes you have Integrated GPS and Google Maps, but you need a data connection to use Google Maps in real time navigation or just pulling up a map.
As mentioned above, if you want to do mapping without a data connection then you need a way to store maps on your phone - All of North America usually takes up few gigs of space depending on the application.
Att will automatically recognize your phone as a smart phone and will add a data plan. I don't think there is a way around it.

I do not know what 'preloaded' Google Maps is, but yes, Google Maps/Navigator does require data. If you want a GPS software that uses only the GPS chip (and no data), there are software that does that. Personally, I prefer CoPilot Live.
Thanks all for your replies and answers! It helped.
