[Q] First WM 6.1 app (NEED HELP) - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
I am new at this forum and I am just starting to learn programming for pocket PCs, especialy for Xperia. I have a few questions, hope you can give me an answer for them. There they are:
1. What librararies are essential for "hello world" app?
2. I managed to create "hello world" with C# but it only works as an alert box, how to make a normal window with left and right buttons.
3. I have SDK 6.0, do I need to get 6.1?
4. What library has a command for normal text output (I.e. cout, print, wrinteln...) and how does it look like?
5. How do I know if my app I am developing needs .NET framework 3.5?
6. I don't have much time to read all topics, but if there are answers to any of my questions in them, please tell me where I can find them.
I am not sure if I am posting in the right place, so if I am wrong, please tell me.

http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Development Tools
it has alot of info

I can only find what software I need to develop, but I already have 2008 visual studio. Maybe you know another page where I could find simple code examples of using windows, messages, links and other codes.

try MSDN Libraries, they are VERY Helpful

I know but they are still very difficult for someone like me. Maybe someone can just answer my questions in the first post? I just need to have a basic window script for C#, instead of alert message box script that I have managed to write myself.

No, you do not need SDK 6.1 for that! I am still running on the SDK6 and I am using the WM5 Emulator - it works just fine.
There are no essential libraries for a HELLO WORLD application. All you have to do, is, to create a new PROJECT for smart devices in your prefered programming language. Select as type Windows Application (or however it is called in English - I am using the German VS2008, so, I am a bit unsure).
Below you will find a sample in VB2008 - sorry, I just prefer VB but you can easily convert the code to C#.
If you hit the left button, it will fill the text "HELLO WORLD" into a textbox control, if you hit the center button, the textbox control will be empty, if you hit the right button, you will get a messagebox with "HELLO WORLD!".
I hope that helps getting you started? For advanced questions I would suggest that you check out the MSDN Forums. Mostly, what works for desktop application works for smart devices too.
You will know if the app you're creating needs .NET3.5 if you select .NET3.5 while starting your project!
Pay attention when starting a new project, you will see a combobox at the top right where you can target a specific .NET FRAMEWORK. Simply select the .NET Version you want to use. I always select 2.0 - this is the most commonly used framework.

Thanks for your answers. Unfortunatly I get an error opening the file:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Maybe you can post code here? And how should I convert it? Using VS2008?

I guess you check your installation of VISUAL STUDIO 2008! It does not appear to me that you have the full VS2008 intsalled but the EXPRESS EDITION of C#.
The error you pictured above tells you already that you do not have VB2008 installed, therefore it can't open the project.
Visual Studio 2008 (commercial version - not EXPRESS EDITIONS) has build-in Development environment for smart devices, including PDA's. There are no additional libraries needed. Posting thye code here wouldn't make much sense since you only would see something like:
Code:
MessageBox.Show("Hello World", "Hello Sample")
You can open the Form1.vb and also the Form1.Designer.vb with any text editor, so, there is no need to repost the entire code here.

I prefer eVC£«£«.It's free.

Hello,
it has been quite a while, since I last wrote. I had abandoned developing for all that time. Recently I started to develope again, this time for real, I hope, and made a little progress. Now I have a very annoying problem. I want to add background image to my app, but I get error, that it can't be found.
Location of image:
C:\Documents and Settings\Martin\Desktop\Xperia\MMCalc\Properties\image.jpg
Reference to image:
Code:
backgroundImage = new Bitmap(@"\Program Files Folder\MMCalc\Properties\image.jpg");
Image is added to properties in visual studio and output file folder is:
Program Files Folder\MMCalc
Error:
{"Could not find a part of the path '\\Program Files Folder\\MMCalc\\Properties\\image.jpg'."}
I tried different paths many times, but all i got is that error, hope you can help me, since I couldn't find anything on google...

Thoughts
Detailed info
just when i thought this app would be useful to install all of my favorite apps after a clean flash i was wrong.. or well it might do that, but the unlimited trial only allows for 1 cab to be placed in there, and what good is that when i can just store that 1 cab on my storage card... would be great if the trial would let you do more than 1 cab.. maybe something like 5-10.. and at a price of 45euro or $60usd its not worth it just to see if it may or may not work with multiple cabs..
"AirWizard 1.1 has been released with some important fixes and improvments:
Fixed Single/Multiple cabinet selection from Browse dialog
Fixed Cabinet header parsing - eg. NET CF 2 2003 has a different info ( CE4+)
Fixed Shortcut Creation/Cabinet file name, now the paths can contain spaces in their names
Visual update when cabinet file is unpacked to notify the user on the status
User cannot exit the installer when/while cabinet files are unpacked/installed by pressing "Finish" menu button
..."

how can we check if the application makes multiple cabs when the trial is only for one cab, should be at least 3 ,

iContact-like Shortuct Launcher ?

Anybody know of an app like iContact/PocketCM but to launch program shortcuts instead of contact dialer ?
I would like to have a thumb scrollable list of all the programs etc that I use.
If not, are there any brave souls willing to take the iContact source code and some how make it run exe shortcuts rather than contact dialling ?
I found l3v5y's Scroll Launcher, its great and very similar to my request.. but its still a little lacking.. any other suggestions ?
go into the registry and edit it:
HKLM\software\microsoft\shell\rai
and go to :mscontacts and edit the string in "1" to equal the path for the program you wanted to launch

Not sure if you read my post, thanks for the random tip though
What I am looking for is an actual program that looks/feels like iContact, but launches shortcuts instead of dialling.
im interested too in such applikation, pm me pls, if you find some
I recommend mortbuttons. It's not exactly like icontact but it's very finger friendly. Besides, the blackaqua theme matches the glossy black bar very well.

PLEASE UES THE QnA UNLESS U HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER
most people come here to see whats new or get updates for programs being developed ...it is very anoying to see new post with nothing to offer
that's what people do in here. is can't be clearer than this, that the first thread in this forum is for questions and answers... since it says : QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS HERE! or something like that...
but people ignore this, ask questions here, and since others reply instead of directing them to the correct thread, they STILL ask questions in new pointless threads. human nature.
I posted there, with no response. I dunno, it seems to me in order to get any eyeballs on a question you have to start a new thread (sorry, I know this is against 'the rules') Besides, this is technically a dev/hacking question, and I'm contributing by generating interest in such an app. Since I've posted, l3v5y has come out of the woodwork to say he's beginning a rewrite of his launcher - plus I've contacted Tene and SupBro to ask about the possibility of forking their projects into a launcher rather than dialler.
@ dan0zone & nir36 : Thanks for the helpful advice.
Way to much of this going on... Hopefully this thread is just moved before it too becomes a mess.
I agree that such a launcher has potential. It would be kind of cool if it had support for groups/folders as well.
Personally, I'd like to see something that uses shortcuts and sub folders inside of a base folder as opposed to a built in browse for the app style of assigning things. It makes setting up extremely easy if you're using your desktop. I uderstand that they both have their ins and outs though.
It would be kind of cool if it could be developed in such a way as to employ the skins from whatever version of iContact you're running or it's own...
Also, how about a contextual menu option to jump to the apps root folder in either file explorer or TC? It would make editing the preference files in those apps which still require manual editing of .ini or .xml files MUCH easier.
Schap's already has something in the works, and PointUI also has this function as well. PointUI is the entire UI, not just the app launcher, and I haven't used it lately, but the scrolling was inverted last I used.

Nice link. I tried that one but it seems to be too battery draining for all day use, also not very customisable. I'm crossing my fingers that someone can just change iContact to make it launch apps instead. I'm learning C++ and gonna buy Visual Studio just for this project if no one else can ..

Well it doesn't scroll the way Schaps new menu will.
Put it does have page flicks from left toe right and RtL and UtD etc.
MortBottuns yes.
If people would have given this some more support and skins a few years ago it would maybe even have had scrolling support.
Best of all is it's highly configurable and aoollws for you to make submenu's.
Who knows what a few donations to Mort would do.

Well, after a few days of hunting.. I've come to the conclusion that patiently sitting back and waiting for Schaps's incredible-looking TouchXperience launcher is the best option.
I've donated a bit, and encourage everyone else interested to do the same

not working yet for OMNIA
Hi,
unfortunately not working on OMNIA screen
only supporting 240,320,480,640
Working well in the UK on my hermes. No need for fake American phone numbers.
Edit:
No sound on videos. Anyone else have this issue, or is it just me?
I am sure it is a good browser. The thing that just bothers me, is, that everything is rendered at the SKYFIRE servers - now, for getting the web content including flash, jave and multimedia on my phone ... well, excellent job! However, I have some security concerns regarding online banking and other stuff I do in the web, so, I most likely won't use it because of the rendering / generating of code at the Skyfire server!
Sure, the developers will tell me "It is 100% save" but then, ... I guess you got my point?
<Just my personal opinion - I am sure lots of users will be happy with Skyfire!>
which version is it? is it different from the beta versions like 0.8xxx (i guess it is something like that)
Its still a beta, version 0.85.0.7927. Seems about the same, but there's no need to log in.

Still no multi-tab pages?
No Good for WVGA.
no mulitab but you can download stuff now
Works well on MDA Compact 4, nice to have full video etc when on wifi. Might be able to finally uninstall Opera mini (though it has been a good browser!!).
Works awesome on my HTC Wizard
Two nights ago I got bored with my htc wizard, had only wm5. I googled htc tweaks and found xda... my personal heaven now. two days later I have a phone I'm actually interested in.. with Wm6, SKYFIRE ( totally cool ) and a bunch of other apps I never knew existed. I didnt find a thread to say thanks to xda developers... but thanks... really.
btw, can anyone tell me what direction to step in if I want to learn about programming and writing software like the cool stuff I found on xda please?
Daniel
Skyfire's sound problem
There are no sound on athena x7501.
Just used it again, and the sound is now working. I didn't change anything, so it must have been a server issue.

The easiest way to get started is VS2008 but it is also commercial!
The good: It has a very nice user interface, excellent editor for writing code (with VISUAL Editor, so, not only script based) and finally as well a WINDOWS MOBILE EMULATOR integrated, so, you won't mess up your real device in case you make a mistake!
Besides that, VS2008 features different programming languages: Basic, C#, C++, Java - if you really want to program professionally, the only way to go would be C++. Other than that, I would recommend get started with Visual Basic - the language is easier to learn.
My recommendation:
Download one of the VS2008 EXPRESS Editions - it is freeware! Make some simple Windows desktop programming to get familiar with the interface and the programming language you have chosen. Join as well the MSDN Forums, hang out at www.codeproject.com - a great place snd source for programming techniques and code samples - and if you're finally still interested in programming, get the commercial version of VS2008 and start programming as well for PDA and Smartphone - it is really fun, trust me!
Sure, some people might come up now with the good old "It is .NET!" arguement, well, sure it is .NET! .NET is part of Windows since Windows XP SP1 and now also fully integrated in WM6.1, so, no big deal! For older platforms, the .NET distributables are available for free download.
However,
Try out cool stuff like this, go through the code to understand what it does, program your own little helpers and once you master it, you will have an easier intro to non-.NET C++ programming (which then will provide you with the full power of programming. The reason why I recommend VS2008 at first, it is very easy for non-Programmers to do stuff in there. You will in addition find millions of places / forums with how-to's.
If you make a quick jump to C++ directly (non-VS) then you most likely will get frustrated very soon since documentation and everything else is mostly written for people who know C++ inside out - VS takes you into the programming world slightly and there is much more help and lots of beginner guides available - this is why I recommend it to beginners, not to promote .NET.

ttrss-reader, Android client for Tiny Tiny RSS (php)

Hi folks,
i am proud to announce the Release of v0.5.11 of ttrss-reader, the android-client for Tiny Tiny RSS:
TTRSS-Reader for Android
Tiny Tiny RSS
TT-RSS is a php/javascript-based reader with a google-reader-like interface, running on your own server with mysql/postgresql and php. It supports multiple user-accounts, feed-categories, labels, sharing of articles and automatic updates every x minutes.
ttrss-reader for Android
Ttrss-reader for Android was started at code.google.com by J.Devauchelle but as i couldn't reach him for several weeks i forked the project: (see note above for URL)
I implemented some usability features and then started implementing local caching since before EVERY single piece of data was requested from the server, slowing down the browsing a lot.
Now i think the program is in a quite usable state, although the local-caching doesn't work so well. The server-side provides API-methods to retrieve data as JSON-Objects but they are focused on transferring a low amount of data in every request (eg. only one article with content is sent at a time, not all new articles which would be much easier).
So if anyone want to keep his feeds away from google and do stuff on his own, in my opinion this is the way to do it. And please excuse my english. ^^
I would appreciate any ideas what could be improved or bugreports and i'd feel honoured if some of you would like to try this app or even join developement.
Some Screenshots:
Greetings,
nils
Hi,
Just to say that I like this app but my ttrss instance seems too big for this app. Android ask me to kill the app everytimes it makes a refresh of the data.
for information : my ttrss run on a PC and is hosted at home. It has +12000 articles
Keep up
Definitely trying this soon
My carrier should have the new Android phone I want in this week. I will definitely try this and get back to you!
Getting error message? I installed this, and put in my tt-rss location, username, and password. It gives me this error message:
"error":"API_DISABLED"
@celticchrys: That means you have to login to the webinterface and enable the API in your user-preferences. Dont know why but the API-access is a per-user-setting in Tiny Tiny RSS so every user has to enable it for himself.
Greetings,
nils
@lordnils: Thanks, I'll give that a try.
***EDIT***
It force closed on me a couple of times, did fetch my articles once, and now says it cannot. I also got a very long error, many screens long, that begins with :
Oupd...
I was unable to conenct to your Tiny Tiny TSS instance, please check your connection and/or connection settings.
Error details:
A JSONObject text must begin with '{' at character 1 of <html>
The above is then followed by basically the entire code for my login page.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hm, something seems to be wrong with the URL for API-Access. You should make sure you entered the URL in the settings exactly like the URL you use to access the webinterface of Tiny Tiny RSS.
If the problem still exists it would be helpful if you provided me with the output of ADB (or aLogcat from the market if you dont want to mess with the USB-connection and the Android-SDK). It would be the easiest way to resolve the problem if you opened an issue on <url for the google-code page of our project where you can start an issue> so other people involved could try to fix the problem, too.
Greetings,
nils
ps: sry for not posting urls, i dont think it is a good practice to encourage people to spam somewhere so they can post links. so i just dont do it and wait for the protection to dissappear. :/
sent pm
lordnils, I've sent you a PM with the requested log.
Thanks!
I just released the TTRSS-Reader on the market:

Hey lordnils,
I'm having the same problem as celticchrys. I am using the exact url that I login to via a browser, API is enabled, but still get the documented error within the program.
Any ideas what I might look at?
First of all, which versions are you using (Tiny Tiny RSS and TTRSS-Reader)?
Then: Can you acquire the output of logcat (aLogcat from the market or "adb logcat" if you got the SDK installed)?
If you are using old versions (older then Tiny Tiny RSS v.1.4.3.1 and TTRSS-Reader v0.7.3) please update first and try again. There are some issues with older Versions of the API which could cause this problem.
Greetings,
nils
I've just checked, and I'm running TTRSS 1.4.2 on my server, and I have the latest Market version on my phone.
Perhaps this is the problem! I'll look into updating my TTRSS server install, and get back to you.
Thank you! This is great! I didn't want to move all my feeds to google so this is perfect!

Leapdroid - a brand new and most performing Android virtual machine

Hi All,
We have just released a new Android virtual machine, called Leapdroid, it is a Windows program that allows you to run Android Apps in Windows. Our focus has been on graphics performance. It outperforms all other players on market, such as BlueStacks, Genymotions, Andyroid, etc... it supports a lot of games, and it it is totally free, you can download it from our website:
http://www.leapdroid.com
From development point of views, we have implemented most features that Google's emulator has, such as compatible adb. Our virtual machine is the only vm that can start adb before vm starts, same as a real device, so you can get the first line of adb logcat. We have also optimized other aspects of the system.
Check it out!

Here is a video with Leapdroid playing a few games, including a shooting game. This video demonstrates the advanced key mapping feature.
Booting Speed is really amazing
I tried using several android emulators such as B****, G*****. Tried this new one. Having not gone through intensive usage now, I am already shocked by its launching speed. Amazing! Really beats others. It is a fresh boot, not like B****'s not shutting down and faking instant boot.
I forgot to mention that our vm supports multiple instances. After installations, two android virtual machines will be created.
Has been looking around for a VM to play Minecraft. This is the only capable so far.
Thanks, Leapdroid!
How I can switch input language?
"Control + Spacebar" not working for me.
What is the Windows input method software you are using?

That looks awesome!!
One question: (You would rock some worlds with that)
Could you somehow release a version compiled for arm-thumb2 so windows-rt-JB users could finally open android apps on their first gen surface RT <3
Probably impossible, but I never give up the hope
Hi Blade,
Thanks for the nice suggestions. A thinner run-time version that can run on ARM systems is definitely our direction, but it will take quite sometime to implement. For the moment, we are focusing on developing a new generation of android virtual machine on X86 architecture. As you may have noted, current android virtual machines are still not that compatible if compared with a real android device, many apps still don't run well inside emulators. Leapdroid will lead in these aspects.
Good performance

Assuming you have your APK ready:
I've found the following information on their website h t t p : / / leapdroid . com / helpcenter . html. It seems that they reply on standard adb to install programs.
I typically use apkmirror to download APKs. What kind of channel do you use?
BTW: I do not understand XDA does not let me to post web links. Maybe for safety reason....
http://www.leapdroid.com/helpcenter.html has more info
Before we enable drag/drop (which should come soon), you will have to use adb to install apk.
Adb works for me. Great work!
When can we see a Mac version?
We are working on Mac and actually Linux version too, but currently focusing on Windows.
How do I unroot or install Xposed?
You can do adb remount, then you can change system partition
I'd love to try this, but I feel very suspicious.
There's no "about" page on the Leapdroid website, so we don't know who we are giving our Google Account credentials to when we login.
Three of the comments on this thread were written by new members who signed up just after this thread was started... that's a red flag for me.
If you look at my profile, you will see I am not new, you can also google my name, will find out.
Our website will have more info soon, we are a VC funded company, located in Fremont, California. I did Android vm a few years back, also released here, please check my old posts.
We have another thread, which is here, with more comments:

It works really Well. Is there any thought of updating it to newer Android versions? Definitely the best Emulator I have used so far.
