CRITICAL - USB Diag? - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I need help fast! My 30 days is up with AT&T on Wed., and I have to determine if the USB port on the Fuze is fully functional or not. It charges and syncs fine, but refuses to connect to the Celio Redfly (yes, I'm posted on that forum as well). The Redfly doesn't recognize the connected device, telling me to enable Advanced Networking, which it is (which, BTW, makes Sync not work, but that's another issue!). I have talked to Celio support, and posted on the WMExperts forum, but no answers are forthcoming about this problem - I seem to be unique with it. I have tried numerous USB cables to rule out a bad cable. So my two questions are these:
1. If the Fuze syncs fine, is the port assumed to be fully functional (I know there are audio/video pins in there, so the answer likely is maybe, maybe not, and I don't have a video cable to test with)?
2. Is there a diagnostic that can be run on the USB port to verify its functionality?
I need to know before Wed. (12/11) which is my return date for an exchange of the Fuze if I think it has a problem. The Redfly is a dead brick to me until this is solved. If the Fuze turns out to be OK, then it's the Redfly or it's driver (running Fuze Beta .64) that is at fault and I need to determine whether to return it or hang on until somebody figures something out. All other Fuze owners are at least connecting - their issues are more with the Redfly functionality.
Tick tock!
Thanks in advance to anyone with tips, tests, or suggestions as to where to go from here (besides hell - been there and back).

Someone??? Anyone???
HELP!!! D-day is Thursday, and I don't really want to exchange if this is a setting issue. Celio has completely dropped the ball on support!

Usb connection issues

Hi Folks, I have just got my hands on a brand spanking new O2 XDA Exec and what a beauty it is too!!!
I am having a few irritating problems though... If I plug in the charger the handset charges just fine. When I plug in the USB cable and connect to my pc it fails and in order for me to get it working I have to perform a repair to the active sync software on the pc. This has to be done repeatedly whenever I boot up my machine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Can you help a first time XDA user?
Cheers in anticipation
Weird!
I hope you are using Windows XP with SP2 running ActiveSync v4.1.
If not you'll have to be shot at dawn.
Andy
thanks Andy for your reply...
I will head out at dawn with my service revolver...
I'm affraid I'm running W2K with active sync v4.1.0
Any sugestions other than upgrading to xp?
guess latest sp for 2k and other windows update
and maybe usb drivers for the motherboard
cheers Rudegar,
I'm running W2K service pack 4 and auto update regularly! I think I'm fully up to date...
Oh, another thought...
You're not connecting via an 'USB Hub' are you?
If you are, I'm afraid I'll have to flay the man-flesh from your puny frame.
I have had no experience of said 'hubs' but I read a lot of reference to them here & AVIODING their use.
No doubt you have COMPLETELY uninstalled ActiveSync, rebooted, reinstalled & rebooted again. Doing this may give your system the proverbial 'kick up the arse'.
Andy
Not a USB hub in sight Andy!
I have indeed un-installed rebooted and re-installed as you mention and still the problem persists...I will see what happens when I reboot next time
If the problem isn't resolved I'll install XP I've just been lazy no to do so up until now...
Cheers
Hmmm.
I have been a user of Win2K (many moons ago) and am not necessarily against its use, but in the context of this discussion, I don not actually know if things CAN actually work under 2K or not.
HOWEVER
BT support was only 'properly' introduced under XP and even that had to wait for SP2, so go figure for Win2K <- hence may be an idea to look at that monster known as microsoft.com to see what pops up in the Knowledge Database re 'Windows 2000 & Bluetooth'
Now, XP SP2 was not perfect by a hell of a long shot - in my mind it is SEVERELY lacking and as a result I spent almost 2 weeks unearthing bugs, workarounds and tracking down suitable drivers!!!!! All as the result of a) piss poor programming and b) the unnecessary restrictions place on the 'proper' WIDCOMM Bluetooth drivers put in place by its new owner Broadcom.
The pitfalls re: XP SP2 & things I have learnt / discovered I therefore recorded for all....
Andy
BTW, Out of all those I've used over the years, there is only 1 Windows based OS other than XP running SP2 that I have any faith in & that was good old trusty Win98!!!!!! Win2K just got on my tits for some reason & didn't last very long!
well both my cradle and my bluetooth dongle are connected to a hub
and i dont have any issues
again i would check for usb drivers for the motherboard
like from via, sis, ali, nvidia, intel or who ever makes the chipset
on the motherboard
cpu-z shold show which chipset the motherboards use
Cheers Guys,
Having reinstalled the active sync software for a fifth time! I seem to have solved the problem!!
At least for now... I guess that there was a problem with the USB drivers that has been fixed it seems fine for now but I'll post again if the problem comes back
Many thanks
Mark

A couple of questions:
What ROM are you using?
What version of Windows is your main computer running?
Has ANYTHING changed between it working and it not? (Automatic updates, new software installed, installed drivers for a new USB device, etc)
Does the PDA recognise that it is charging/has external power?
Can you borrow a different cable\somebody else's computer to test it on?
Just as a test, try going into your settings, in the connection tab and go into "USB to PC". Try ticking\unticking the checkbox labeled "Enable advanced network functionality"
If the cable is broken, best thing to do is to buy a new one - its probably not worth the money to repair it (try looking on EBay - any mini-usb cable SHOULD suit the Universal)
(ps. are you sure you should be posting in here? I think you probably should have put it into the main section for Universals)
hi TehPenguin
thx for your reply
as i said before i am a total newbie and so dont know were to check wot ROM i am using.from where can i check.the fone come with WM6 installed(it does not have video calling however)
i am runnig windows xp sp2 on my pc.
when i plug in wall charger ,pda recognizes it
no mew software were installed from the time it was working(after that i installed a couple of spb programmes via bluetooth)
i tried my cable on my fiends foned and it worked,i tried my fone with my friends cable and it didnt work, that is why i am thinking it is something to do with my mini usb connector.

Okay, Windows XP is a good start - and its nice to see that you did some test to figure out where exactly the bug is
I find it unusual that your phone came with WM6 already on it - unless it was second hand... You can check your windows version by going into the settings, under the "System" tab and opening "About", at the top of this it should have "Windows Mobile(R) 6 Professional" or something like that
Here are some more things to try:
Have the phone off and disconnected, then plug in the cable (this seems to work for me if I have problems)
Go into your settings, under the connection tab and go into "USB to PC". Try unticking the checkbox labeled "Enable advanced network functionality"
I think that the second one is most likely the way to fix it. Also what version of ActiveSync are you running (At the top of ActiveSync there is a "Help" menu, select the "About Microsoft ActiveSync" - this should give you version info). If the activesync is anything less than version 4.5 - look for an update on Microsoft's website
And one last thing - no offence, but - one thing I don't like is people using "IM spk" for forums. I understand if you aren't fluent in English but please try...
Enjoy!
TehPenguin
thanks again for your help.
first I would like to say that i do not know what you mean by IM spk ?sorry if I broke any rules
the phone is not new,i bought it off e-bay
I am running activesync 4.5 on my pc which if i am not mistaken is the latest version available.
I will check about what version i have later,as I dont have phone with me currently, but what I can say is the version i have does not support video calling, and it does not have the Phone pad facility in the entering text options.
No harm done with the "IM spk" (its just one of the things I don't like - I'm sure you read my post on the Ultimate ROM)
Did you try any of my other suggestions?
Also, you may wish to upgrade your Universal to a new ROM (I believe that Ivan is uploading one as I type) or go to an official WM5 ROM from a manufacturer - it is possible that the ROM you are using is defective...
just to let you know
problem fixed.it was a hardware problem after all, took it to a local technician who fixed it up for me
all back to normal now
thanks for your help m8
connector broken
The connector on side of my universal appears to have come dislodged and can't charge

That's for a Wallaby. The Uni has a USB socket soldered straight to it's mobo. It depends if the damage has ripped any tracks from the mobo. It may be a straight solder replacement, or you may need to follow the tracks slightly to solder further along them. I'm sure a competent solderer would be able to help if you showed them it. Or upload a picture of the damage and we can all have a look

Webcam Driver For Kaiser !?!

HI all,
I'm requesting if you anyone knows a free WEBCAM software where it can turn the KAISER into a webcam that can be used in Live messenger or skype etc......... I've searched on the internet but they aren't working on WM6, so i'm asking for help
Thanks!
J
I know that you stated you were looking for a 'free' solution and sadly I do not believe one exists. However, you can check out a non-freeware program called Webcamera Plus from Ateksoft. I'm sure it would work on the Kaiser.
It does work. I set up my Kaiser (Dutty's Touch ROM version 3.0) connected via USB to my OQO 02 (XP Pro Tablet) and used Skype. I only get about 4 frames per second. I don't know if it's the software or maybe the cable I'm using is USB 1.1. Both the front and back camera's work (finally, a use for the front camera in the USA!). My front camera seems to have a weird angle to get a full face shot. Sort of up and to the right. The resolution, as expected, is better on the back camera.
I guess I'll go through the struggle of setting up a bluetooth activesynch to see how that works...
any success would like to know how well it works before I buy it.
Gosh, with the bad video driver on the Kaiser, i would bet the results would suck big time............the reason i'm asking if the kaiser can do webcaming is because i'm on a 64-bit OS system and its hard to get webcams to work with correct drivers on my 64-bit windows xp....I'm hoping that if this works, then i can use it as webcam.....
I have Webcamera plus version 2 and it works great, I get 10-15 fps over wifi. no need of cables.
I am getting 1~2fps over the USB cable, any ideas why it could be so slow?, on the phone the pciture is far smoother, but on the PC is very slow
-Mods, delete please -

PC's don't see my Fuze no more?

I haven't plugged my fuze into any PC's for a couple of months - last time I did it was with a Windows 7 machine and it worked fine....
Well - now I'm trying to get the thing to sync with an XP machine. When I plug it into the usb, I see the fuze is charging - but activesync never comes up and nothing on the pc indicates that is saw me do this.
I've tried with 3 different XP machines here today - and none of them realize I've plugged anything in when I connect my fuze?
Soo...must be something with my fuze? Anyone have any ideas?
Only thing I saw was in settings/connections/usb to pc
there is an option for "enable advanced network functionality" - which I have disabled.
FYI I'm running WM 6.5 on it....
All previous reports of this issue ended with bad USB port on Fuze but you may want to search and read a couple of the threads first.
Interesting.
I can't seem to find any of these treads - can you point me to any?
Seems rather odd that if the port was bad that the phone would still charge though....
Let me ask you this, you say that you changed your PC to USB settings to Enable Advanced network functionality, I thought this setting was in Active Sync. USB to PC setting should be to "enable faster data transmission". Have you played with both settings?
Here is one recent thread and I know I saw another that mentioned the device would charge but not sync.
Here are many more threads regarding AS issues.

I'm using WM 6.5 - and there I see:
settings/connections/USBtoPC
..that brings up a window which has settings on the behavior of the device when you connect it to a pc via USB. The options are to a) ActiveSync or b) DiskDrive
If you select a) ActiveSync you can "enable advanced network functionality"
There is also an option at the bottom that will cause it to ask which connection type to use when you connect.
I've tried all possible combinations - my pc does nothing when I connect, but I *do* see the fuze charging...freakn strange!
Have you tried to connect through an emulator like MyMobiler?
Its most likely a driver issue on your phone.
Hate to say it but.....
If all else fails, Hard Reset, flash back to stock ROM (if you've flashed a cooked ROM) and this should restore the corrupt driver.

MyMobiler uses activesync to connect so that won't really be of any help at this point...
I was considering doing a hard-reset - but MAN I have about 140 apps installed and configured so I really hate doing that. What would be nice is if I could just find the driver and try that.
So that I suppose is my next question - anyone got the driver? hahaha
I use Pocket Controller which can use an IP address instead, I assumed MyMoblier was similar.
Copy the enclosed .dll to your windows directory using something like total commander because it is a cooked in system file. It still may not allow it though.
You should also look into Sashimi restoral program, as it is not uncommon to have to hard reset occassionally.
Good luck!
Is a firewall blocking it?
Each time I want to sync my Fuze, I have to disable my firewall. For some reason, even when I open the correct ports, my Fuze will not sync to Windows Mobile Device Center on my Vista Ultimate (32-bit) laptop.
Once it connects, I can turn the firewall back on and everything works fine. New and changed items will continue to sync until the Fuze is disconnected from laptop.
You may have already checked this and/or things may be different with XP and AS, but since I didn't specifically see it in the post, I thought I would throw it out there.
Bad cable???
I decided to try a different mini-usb cable and it worked.
Here is what is strange though - the bad cable:
1. Still charges the phone when connected to a PC
2. Works fine with my external 500gig USB hard drive (which also is powered via the cable)
3. ...but no computers see the phone with this cable - or see it as a storage device.
Because of #1 and #2 above - I assumed the cable must be good. I had another cable so I figured I'd give it a shot - and sure enough with this cable it works with all the computers.
I guess there must be one bad pin or something with the cable - or something??? Guess it must use different ones than the external hard-drive apparently.
Oh well - at least it works and rather it be a $2 cable than my $200 phone...hahaha
Thanks everyone for the suggestions....
For what it's worth if anyone stumbles across this post in the future, I had a similar issue happen where it would bring up the usb menu on my fuze when you plug it in, but the computer wouldn't see it.
I had recently swapped the display/touchscreen, and it was one of the strips of metal ground/shielding tape inside the thing being mispositioned that did it.
Put it back together with everything in the right place and boom! works.
If you've taken the phone apart, those pieces of shielding tape are very important to get back exactly like they were, I've also seen lcd issues from it.

Using HTC Diamond as a modem. (COM Port)

After giving up with a Motorola Razr V3a, I bought an HTC Diamond; I want to have, on a call, the caller id information go to my laptop, where I have another program to listen for it, and pull up a client record in ACT! 2009. Should be simple, except it doesn't seem there's any way of getting a cellphone to behave.
So, with the HTC Diamond, how can I get it to actually look like a usb modem for Windows XP SP3? I've been scouring the 'net for the majority of a day just looking for this; is it really that hard? What am I missing? Again, I don't want to get on the internet (internet sharing), I simply want a nice COM port that will accept AT commands.
(using ##DIAG let XP have HTC USB Modem, but attempting to query the port, or use hyperterm to talk fails)
Any help very much appreciated!
Edit: OR, is there any software that communicates over the USB cable that can be notified when a call is coming in, perhaps by Microsoft's Radio Link Layer SDK?
