Registry Changes Won't Stick - General Questions and Answers

Hello all,
I'm trying to change the default voice command app that is invoked via bluetooth to be MS VoiceCommand 1.6 on my XV6800 per suggestions on threads like this one and on the wiki site and I'm running into a weird problem. When I try to change the path value like this:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path = "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe"
The change does not stick! I've tried several things such as creating a new Path2 string value (which works) and then delete the existing one and rename Path2 to Path, but that just defaults to the original "\Windows\SDDialer.exe" value.
I sync with an exchange server so I am suspicious that some kind of security policy is preventing editing. I've tried by using both Resco Registry editor on the device as well as the CeRegistryEditor (after modifying RAPI security policy setting, 1001, to 1 per this thread - which ironically I could change) but that still did not allow me to change this Path value...
Thanks for any help!

if the registry setting is built into the rom, the rom will restore it after a restart

Yeah, I could deal with that even... The issue I'm seeing is that the change never gets made at all...

Ringtones Problem

I'm using Andot's WM6 Perfect ROM, and everything seems really great.
For some reason I can't change the location of my ringtones
In my registry I have entered this string:
HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\Directory =
\storage card\Windows
Because my device seems to keep its ringtones in the Windows directory instead of the \windows\rings\
But I can't seem to select any ringtones,,,,
Is there something wrong with my edit? Is there something special about the ringtones (naming or bitrate)?
Just a follow-up:
There has also been similar discussion on the Tornado forum, with more responses...
Essentially, it's ignoring the registry setting in hkcu/control panel/soundcategories and will only recognise foreign sound files in the directory \windows\application data\sounds
And only in phone memory, not storage.
Can anyone imagine any setting that might cause it to override or ignore the soundcategories registry entry?

USB to PC settings shortcut location?

I have been attempting to re-cook a ROM (famewolf's latest) and for some reason I keep getting the 'USB to PC' icon in Settings\System as opposed to Settings\Connections. I thought it was a HTCCPL issue (with provxml and/or registry settings but I am not sure now. What is the actual application that starts when you click this icon so I can attempt to locate which file is causing it to appear where it is?
Thanks
Andy
OK, fixed it. For some reason it looks like there is a typo in one of the .RGU files. This is in the there:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\PC Connection]
"Group"=dword:2
However the space between the PC and Connection needs removing:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\PCConnection]
"Group"=dword:2
Now if I could work out how to get Button 4 to launch Voice Command I would be sorted....
Currently my .RGU file that installs the registry entries for Voice Command contains this:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C4]
@="\"\\Windows\\AppButtons\\Voice Command.lnk\""
"Name"="Button 4"
"Icon"="\\windows\\voicecmd.exe, 0"
"ResetCmd"="\"\\Windows\\AppButtons\\Voice Command.lnk\""
"Flags"=dword:00000000
In re-cookings of other ROMs this has worked fine. With famewolfs latest the entries in the registry are not there. I have tried creating a 'provxml' which is half working, what I can't get it to do is include the quotation marks when the settings are added to the registry. Does anyone know how? Doing this via a .RGU file you need the extra '\', but this doesn't seem to work with a provxml file.
Any takers?
Andy

Disabling the new sms-writing-mode

Hi there
The new way to write sms is absolutely awful!
Is there any possibility to get the "old" way back? I don't like this kind of "messenger"-style!
EnzephaloN
You can disable threaded sms via Schaps' excellent 'Advanced Configuration Tool'.

Ah, thanx a lot!
Just done it buddy, REALLLLLY easy to do.
Easiest way..
PHM Registry Editor
Scroll down and download " Pocket PC 2002,2003 (ARM/PXA )
Copy the downloaded file ( .cab ) across to your device.
Once there install it then open it up and navigate too HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\OEM\
Create a new DWORD value with value name as SMSInboxThreadingDisabled and set it value data to 1.
Soft reset and its done
I did it 5 mins ago and it makes texting alot better !, seems to run smoother too. Only takes a minute to do too.

HKLM= H Key Local machine
It is just an abbreviation that is used by some registry programs and such.
There are programs that can apply some of the commonly used tweaks. You can search the forum for advanced config.

I used that whenever I made registry entries. It's a pretty good program thats extremely lightweight and gives you access to everything in the registry so you can edit it from your pc. Just connect with activesync. Just make sure you either make a backup or you know exactly what you're changing before you change it
also as a side note, some registry changes don't stick after a soft reset. If thats the case (happens when editing the registry for something thats open) power off your device by holding down the power button and reboot.
Access Fuze Registry
I am being denied access to my Fuze Registry using Mobile Registry Editor. When I try to delete a registry, it says that access is denied. I did not have this problem with my Tilt. Am I missing something?
Access denied issue
Your fuze and tilte both usually lock the registry in an attempt to prevent harmful changes when deleting or modifying certain values. But the solution is to use an internal registry editor or some other registry editor. such as the one that comes with pocket controller, if you have the cash haha, internal editing can be done with resco explorer's registry add in, again if you have the cash, but these tools are invaluable when editing your device to your preferences.

Quickgps won't update

PIE is working and connects through whatever means however it's not the same for quickgps. Even when there's no connection running it won't even try to start a GPRS connection. Forget activesync and wifi it's the same story. Assistance please
Make sure the quick gps service is running-it's launched by bootlauncher, and most task managers don't register it. XTask will show if it's working.
Nope, service is not running. What now?
You need this registry key.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\Services\QuickGPS]
"Index"=dword:00000000
"Info"=dword:00000000
"Module"="\\windows\\GPSAux.dll"
"Order"=dword:000000ff
"Prefix"="GUX"
Pour favour, could you place all that into a REG file for me? I'm trying to input the values but the only ones I'm sure I got are "Module" and "Prefix".
Just cut-and-paste the full code I posted (inc. the Windows Registry editor bit) into a text file. You can do it on a pc or your ppc. Then change the file extension to .reg, and import the key with a registry editor like dotfred's task manager or phm regedit.
Imported the key and soft resetted. Confirmed that the service is NOT running as per the registry entry. However, I found a "QuickGPS app service(GUX0" running with most of the settings you gave me there in the registry.
2 differences:
- it's described as "dll for icon in TodayScreen" (yes, it's bull, i know)
- and entry called "Keep=dword:00000001"
help... still nothing
Well a hard reset worked and am gonna backup all QuickGPS related registry keys, but I really doubt that it's that simple. If this problem comes again I'll likely have to do this again.
Watch this space.
